#website to make money

I am never inclined to make fun of tumblr's cheesy attempts to make money and generally support them even if you consider them cringe. Websites need money to operate and tumblr needs to find a way to make money consistently or it will cease to exist. I do not want tumblr to cease to exist, and the most common alternative method of making money is to collect and sell all of our personal data, which I do not want either. Websites that can support themselves via people willing to spend $25 bucks to commit to a bit is a sign of a brighter and more sustainable version of the internet.

do you think the obsession with ‘style consistency’ in online art communities is mostly caused by this idea that your art style needs to be easily marketable & recognizable as a brand (especially when you’re working as a freelancer). i see the /least/ amount of progress in my art whenever i try to aim for style consistency. i don’t know exactly where i’m going with this but i think there’s some sort of connection between trying to monetize/market your art & limiting your growth as an artist. and i think it’s very sad.

being on marauders tumblr has made me realize that a lot of people would actually share anne rice's (terrible) opinion about fanfiction if they didn't write fanfic themselves.

Hey I’ve noticed that you seems to have a lot of popular posts! I was wondering, if you don’t mind sharing, how much money do you make on average on Tumblr? Also how do you recommend a new blog begin building their audience? I’ve been trying to do some research myself but nothing really comes up on Google. Thank you for the help!
lmao

the fact that the internet is simultaneously becoming so censored in some aspects (nudity, sex, even swearing!!!) but bigots are consistently given free rein is just so... i don't even know what to say anymore

the average person doesn't expect you to be a perfect ethical consumer, that's not possible for the vast majority of us. but what youre saying is it's better to do nothing at all and choose the worst possible options (sweat shops, overseas shipping waste, idea/product theft, all wrapped up in SHEIN) than to put even the tiniest effort in where you can.
[they are referring to this post]
What I said was "some people are doing literally everything they can to survive and have no extra bandwidth to spend extra time and money on their purchases, and it is cruel and therefore un-punk to gatekeep punkness and add additional shame to these people's lives based on that fact."
I think it's still a good thing to try to ethically consume; I literally never said it wasn't. I had never even heard of SHEIN before. Rather, I am much more concerned about what I saw as arbitrary gatekeeping based on ability and income.
And frankly how dare you claim that I am supporting sweatshops and abuse by saying that this additional work you are demanding (in this case, presumably, vetting every clothing company you buy from) is not always possible for people. It is not a light accusation to accuse me of supporting abuse.
"How dare you say we piss on the poor", Etc. 🙄 this isn't Twitter. You are determined to enforce moral purity, but you are failing to see the nuance.
Because when I say "no extra bandwidth," I mean no extra bandwidth. This is not the "car shows it's on E but actually secretly it has a lot of gas left" situation that abled people constantly assume disabled people mean when they say they are at their limit.
This is "at a certain point, people will hit a wall in terms of money and time and energy, and any energy spent after that comes directly out of their life force."
So the argument "okay but just spend a little more time money and energy actually" is not a valid one.
And the argument "if you are not able to do this specific task, then it means you're not doing anything else to make the world a better place" doesn't exactly impress me either. You said yourself that it is impossible to be a perfectly ethical consumer for most people.
How do you know what else people are doing to resist oppression? How many hours per week until your standards are met? What if someone works 3 jobs? Does that mean it's harder to be a good person if you're poor?? Why do you get to decide what specific avenue of bettering the world is the most morally repugnant or acceptable? What kind of proof of goodness and effort would make you satisfied enough to lay off on the shame?? Who are you helping??
Clothing is a fundamental human need, and some of us have to buy cheap fucking clothes quickly. Billionaires are buying their seventh yacht this month. The people who own fast fashion companies are abusing their workers and putting local affordable clothing stores out of business - and this applies for basically every company with price points that low because governments are failing to regulate corporations to enforce basic human rights.
I have $300 to spend on a new wardrobe as my old clothes have fallen apart or become too small. Do you have a way for me to get a new winter coat, 3 flannels, 10 shirts, 3 dress shirts, new sandals, 10 pairs of pants, 5 bras, 12 pairs of socks, and 10 pairs of underwear within that budget and also definitely 100% ethically sourced, with free returns in case it doesn't fit? Or will I simply have to use the cheap stores?
I have about an hour to spend on this per week. Should I continue to wear small and tattered clothing until I have the time, money, and energy to meet your standards? Did you know there are more empty homes in this country than homeless people? If I decide to splurge on only 100% ethically-produced products, and I can't make rent, and I become homeless, are YOU going to be there for me?? Or are you busy litigating the endless tiny shames of poverty in your own community?
So I ask you again, are you sure this is where you want to direct your punk energy? Because energy and time, as it turns out, are limited resources. And I would never expect you to secretly have more than you claim to have.
#original#punk#hopepunk#cripplepunk#i swear to god#reading comprehension website#how dare you say we piss on the poor#jfc 'what you're saying is we should do nothing' - what I'm saying is YOU are doing nothing by enforcing this boundary#you have to give people more credit than this. i believe you want a better world too. and it would be cool if you used your energy to#instead ask 'how do i fight for the people in my community to be clothed and have the time and income to shop ethically?'#or 'how do i support activism that pushes for regulation that could control these companies?'#monitoring how poor people spend money is a supremely Republican thing to do. as is demanding clear moral purity from every scenario.#you want a better world too. you want to demand your peers do better. - fine. good.#but you need to be asking if you have remembered and included everyone's needs when making statements like this.#capitalism is all for forgetting about poor and disabled people and refusing to believe their limits.#shame is a necessary weapon in fighting greed but it IS a weapon. be so careful where you point that shit. enough shame can kill a person#and a lot of us are already defending from it from all sides.#shaming a person who is already at their limit for not doing more is an act of cruelty. think very carefully about what that means please.#i literally don't even know what SHEIN is lol i just know classism when i see it#but I've had friends whose clothes were visibly falling apart with no income and so much so shame so deep in their hearts they were dying#and if they had seen that post it would have made them even sicker and gotten them no closer to the dignity of being properly clothed#shame is a weapon and /you need to be careful!!!!/

You’ve probably been asked this question before, but does the government tax you for your commissions? If so, how?
i do pay taxes on my income yes, the 'how' is bit of a long and boring answer though so im going to put it under the cut (fyi im in australia so my info is only applicable to australians)
-first off, in australia you have a tax-free threshold of about $18,500, govt doesnt really seem to care if you report your earnings under that or not, idk though you should check whether or not you legally Have To. better to stay on the tax mans good side.
-i have an accountant who does the maths and lodges my taxes for me, all i have to do is payg the ATO an amount of money 4 times a year based on my reported earnings
-i report my earnings once a year around july-ish, but if you have a tax agent i believe the ATO tends to give you more leeway on When exactly you do your annual taxes
-i am a registered sole trader, this means that while i run a business, i don't have employees other than myself, so i dont pay the taxes business owners with employees would.
-businesses that make over 70k aud/year have to pay GST, which is a 10% tax on all sales within australia. this does not affect my customers abroad and it does mean my australian customers get a special invoice :)
-if you hold onto your receipts, you can get certain things as a tax write off, ex. new work computer, new drawing tablet, office chair, as long as it is justifiably related to your business and you dont abuse it, on the off chance you get audited youll be safe as houses
-see if any charities you donate to can be tax write-offs too. thats just general advice but plenty of charities are tax deductible so go crazy.

Alright, everyone's talking about the recent bans happening on Tumblr and I want to spell it out plain and clear for anyone lost or confused. Basically, what's happening is community guidelines are being enforced unfairly, and at times, nonsensically.
Here's what started it: a trans woman attempted to post some transition photos— one at the start of her transition and one of her now. The photos kept getting removed for "violating community guidelines." Most of us have seen this post. She kept trying to reply with the photos and every time they got removed. What community guidelines were violated was not made very clear. It seems that in the second photo, she was wearing cat ears and a fashionable choker collar. The photos may have been flagged as "fetish gear." But is that the line? Cat ears? No one can wear Hot Topic chokers anymore? How is this fetish gear if she was fully clothed? What happened?
I believe what happened was the post kept getting reported by TERFs. Tumblr infamously does not have many staff members and relies on bots and AI to scan posts for unwholesome content. With that, I am not confident that a human was involved in the original removal of these photos.
Frustrated, not just this trans woman, but multiple trans people have made posts expressing ways they hoped the CEO or Tumblr staff would cartoonishly die. For example, "I hope a piano falls on your head as you're walking out your front door." They have been banned because of this. There isn't a whole lot of weight to this decision, because clearly these users had no intention of bringing real harm to any staff members. What about the real harm and harassment that not only these trans women have experienced these past few days, but the entire trans community deals with on this app? This decision already felt like a slap to the face.
Then, the CEO threatened to get the police involved. Again, this threat holds little legal ground. These are clearly not real death threats. In order for the police to seriously consider a death threat, it has to be explicit. For example, if you make a post saying "I am going to shoot up the school tomorrow," then the police will investigate it. This is a realistic threat. If they find a gun and have reason to believe that you were actually going to shoot the school, you'll get arrested.
The CEO knows this, of course. That's not why he's made these threats. The banning of these blogs means that real staff got involved. They agree that these blogs have violated guidelines repeatedly and agreed that they should be removed. Keep in mind, the threats must have been reported multiple times as well, so there may have been more hands involved in this decision than it appears.
We have to remember that this website is full of trans people and allies. These decisions have rightfully outraged this community. The threats to involve the police were made to encourage the rest of Tumblr to stop talking about it. The problem is, we've been talking about this all along.
Society views trans people as a fetish. Over and over again we've expressed how frustrating it is that our bodies only exist in porn. Can you fathom how frustrating it is to hear that porn is allowed on this website but not cat ears? Trans people could breathe air, and we'd immediately be sexualized. It's a real world problem that is much bigger than this site.
To the Tumblr CEO and staff, you can't keep unfairly banning trans people. If you tried to ban every trans person on this site, you wouldn't have anyone willing to use it anymore. These decisions are going to cost you greatly. Please be clear about the community guidelines and enforcing them realistically moving forward.
And to my cisgender followers, please don't stop talking about this. You may have the privilege to forget about these issues, but we don't. Please keep posting about it. Please support the inevitable blogs that will be banned in the coming days because they dared to talk about it.

bro you are on the FANDOM WEBSITE why are you NOT supporting your fandom creators????? do you WANT us to stop??? do you want there to be no more art & fic?? because that’s what happens when you don’t reblog our stuff. this isn’t a threat, this is a reality. if there is no one here wanting to see our stuff we won’t post it. I’m not trying to guilt trip here, none of us are, we’re literally just saying that if there is no motivation to spend 10+ hours making fanart or 5 years writing a multichapter fic for free then we won’t fucking do it
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
^this shit? ridiculous. I LOVE EVERYONE WHO REBLOGGED & INTERACTED WITH MY ART! I LOVE EVERYONE WHO ASKED QUESTIONS & COMMENTED!! but so many of these people just liked it & left. this has been getting worse over the years, too. the reblogs to likes ratio has been getting crazier. I create because I love it, but if I have no reason to post, I won’t. fandoms dry up because of this. creators quit because of this.
we just need to stop acting like this is instagram, or that anyone cares what your blog looks like. people don’t see your likes, they see your reblogs. you want that favourite content creator to post more art? you want that writer to post the next chapter of your fav fic?? reblog it. share it. show them you care, because otherwise they won’t. this is a hobby we do for free. you consume our stuff for free. you aren’t entitled to it, so please just reblog, it isn’t hard.

Anyone else think short form social media based on algorithms designed to promote topics that create more engagement instead of more joy, the idea of fast fashion but conveyed through social media, and the fact you can monetize suffering and outrage better than ever has largely resulted in the death spiral of media literacy and the mass emergence of bad faith readings?
#I may be venting a lil but god it blows my mind#fyp is a blessing and a curse because i don't think ppl were ever meant to be subjected to this many ppl at once#god i took a bird site hiatus for weeks and now BARELY check it and it already feels like a hit#oughhhhh#even fandom spaces have hugely incorporated marketing and networking into them bc of cmms and sponsorship and building portfolio#which would be fine tbh if it weren't for the way socmed is designed#now it's like you can't support too many ppl or else you're shadow banned or you have to make yourself palatable and marketable#and websites with threads in which people will only read the first post before qrting because ratios are seen as five minutes of fame#features that permit beating an algorithm are locked behind a paywall that promises you money if you go viral#and what goes viral is usually incendiary content meant for those ratios or trends. whether for or against OP#even in hobbyist spaces the climate has changed so much due to the monetization and marketing and just. ugh#not to mention side accounts dedicated to gossip in this new priv account culture like...idk#if you have to make another account so you can make fun of a friend on main with selected priv friends it just doesn't sit well with me#and not every priv account does this but enough do and it makes me tired#unsolicited hate comments are still as bad as they used to be on ff dot net except now people openly are proud of it more#why do most socmed feel like passive aggressive sticky notes on high school lockers#there is so much more I could say about everything that has left me weary about the internet but I don't know the time or place#and I don't want anyone to think this is about them because it's a general statement. though if you are doing the more inflammatory things.#maybe rethink that. it's not good for anyone else and it's not good for you either#I keep coming back online to check on ppl and see art and I *know* it's draining for my health every time#but I feel a lot better now that i use socmed less overall. and that I try to focus on what makes me happy#it just sucks seeing so many people i care about endure absolutely wild struggles bc people online do not care.#I like rambling in my tags because this is the only place I ramble except my personal journal and to my wife

can’t stop thinking about that one girl who faked being a nonbinary lesbian pakistani hiv positive human trafficking survivor just to write fanfic.... hamilton fanfic no less
like why not just write the fic. why do you have to pretend to be something you’re not
i’ll admit, writing hiv hamilton fic as a white girl in uni is kind of cringe, but pretending to be a nonbinary lesbian pakistani human trafficking survivor and also writing that fic is significantly more cringe.
