So I was reading Karen from HR(go read it!) by Unpretty(go follow her!!) last night and I think it crystalized for me part of why I LOVE her characterization of Bruce Wayne so much(I mean: just basically that she treats ALL the characters as WHOLE PEOPLE rather than split-personalities ala the wornout Kill Bill analysis of Superman[which you weren't SUPPOSED to agree with! Bill's the VILLAIN GUYS!! But that's a different essay u_u] is Enough but she does so much more...), namely:
"Batman" isn't a way Bruce deals with his trauma, it's a way he AVOIDS dealing with his trauma.
Yes this is an analysis post about a fanfic |:| Obvsl, ***Spoilers*** |:| |:|
Ok so here we go: This is Bruce reacting to the grief of Corinne's co-workers at her death
He wanted to put distance between them. It wasn't fair to any of them to be irritated. It wasn't their fault. Nails on a chalkboard, their noisy grief repulsive. The self-centered way the living mourned their memory of the dead. Accepted death as a force of nature, an act of god. No fury in them, no action. No problems to be fixed. A hole in their lives to fill with tears until they couldn't feel the emptiness anymore.
Don't worry, he knows how fucked up it is to think this way and there are lines immediately following which show that(he is so well characterized in this and all related works PLEASE Trust me, Dear Readers) but I want to focus on THIS and what it says about how BRUCE relates to grief and mourning.
He thinks mourning is a way to put death behind you; a way to center your OWN feelings of grief and loss in the midst of something terrible which has happened to SOMEONE ELSE. Right off the bat(heh) this is telling us he has NEVER let himself mourn for his parents because he's talking about it in 3rd Person; as something separate from himself(and please don't sleep on how he also talks about The Living in the same way, implicitly classifying himself outside that category as well) Bruce is a Raw-Fucking-Nerve 24/7, and has been since his parents' were killed right in front of him, and refuses to heal or even face his emotions about that event because doing either might mean moving on and he thinks that would be selfish.
Actually, let's look at another line from before this which I think clarifies his emotional reality wonderfully:
He looked out at all the employees, all huddled together in different groups, whispering and checking their phones and waiting for the police to tell them they could leave. Some of them crying. Everyone giving him a wide berth. There was blood on his shirt. Bruce Wayne didn't have any reason to be handling this well. Shouldn't have been handling this well. Safer for the sake of secrets not to handle it well. With that decided, he found the nearest trash can and started heaving into it. Better. He hadn't done that in years. He grabbed a flute of champagne from the abandoned buffet table and downed it like a shot, then another. It helped get the taste of acid off his tongue. He let his hands shake. It felt like a normal thing to happen, his hands shaking.
Allowing himself the physical expressions of grief and trauma soothes him; feels normal. Because it's not something he's let himself do in years(probably lying to himself here; probably since the murders). He can only psychologically allow himself to physically grieve as an act to keep up appearances; he can only grieve by disassociating. Which of course also means he's never PRIVATELY allowed himself this grief. Jesus-Fuck
Let's jump forward, to an exchange with Dick Grayson(first robin/nightwing), to drive this point home. It's a longer dialogue I don't want to include all of so the context: Corinne died before earlier in the week and Nightwing found her, but she revived and left the scene before he returned from catching the culprit, and Dick just told this to Bruce:
"You could have talked to me about it," Bruce added, looking at the ballroom and not at him. "When that happened. How you were. Feeling." Nightwing huffed a sound that wasn't a laugh. "Right," he said. "Sure." Bruce grit his teeth. Nightwing clapped him on the shoulder. "Let's do that," he said. "You can come over later, tell me how you're feeling about all this." Bruce said nothing. "Yeah," Nightwing said, patting his shoulder as he disengaged and stepped away. "That's what I figured."
There is so much here, and it all hurts so good. 1)Bruce is thinking of himself as Bruce; again Unpretty treats the "secret-identity" superheroes as what they are, facades; Bruce does not think of himself as Batman, Batman is a persona-tool(one might say a worksona :3) Bruce uses 2) but Dick isn't Dick even when he's in his civvies he's Nightwing, because Bruce needs to distance and disassociate himself from the emotions he won't let himself process and that's what he uses the personas to do 3)this is made explicit by both his passive refusal of Dick's sympathy and offer of comfort, and the bitter sarcasm of Dick's offer of it, which communicates this is an offer that has always been there, and always been denied. Dick cares for Bruce and wants to help him heal but knows Bruce won't let him care for him and won't heal, and this refusal has visibly damaged their relationship.
Oh and 4) "You could have talked to me about it": Bruce's desire to help others is tied directly to his refusal to let others help him, and his refusal to mourn his parents/let himself grieve/heal. Because his desire to help IS a trauma-response, because you Can't Actually Just Suppress This Shit Away. This situation is So Fucked Up for Dick: Dick wants to be comforted by Bruce as much as he wants to comfort him, but he knows letting Bruce comfort him would Only Reinforce His Pain; Would Only PUSH HIM FURTHER AWAY. Again I say to you: Jesus-Fuck.
Ok so: this next bit isn't directly related to this, it's more of like a second-order thing, but a few chapters later Bruce is helping Corinne make empanadas and he talks about his dad and I think this is also Quite Revealing:
..."My father liked to cook," Bruce said eventually as he peeled paper away from garlic to pull away cloves. "He was very passionate about food. About joy."...
I'm going to skip around a bit here cuz it's in the context of a much longer/larger scene
..."We had a chef, but he liked to make meals himself when he could. Food as a symbol, food as a way to love himself, to love life. Finding joy in the work it takes for even a fleeting moment of happiness, gone in the time it takes to clear a plate."... .... "I don't have that," Bruce said. "His sense of taste. I don't think I've ever enjoyed anything as much as he enjoyed good soup."
BRUUUUUUUUCE!!!! No wonder everyone wants to fuck this man. We can fix him, guys; WE CAN FIX HIM NO SHUTUP EVERYBODY BEFORE WERE ALL DOING IT WRONG BUT WE GET IT WE CA- ok I'll stop now.
First I want to be mean for a little bit and call bullshit here cuz unpretty's Bruce is One of the most Eloquent Motherfuckers Around. Fuck You You don't enjoy things "Food as a symbol, food as a way to love himself, to love life" Goddaminit just admit you love your dad you son of a bitch!!! And while you're at it, admit you like to talk so that words sound good leaving noisehole!!! Admit that you love Competence; Admit it!! ADMIT IT!!!(*entirely metaphorically shaking this take of Bruce Wayne by his lapels tho not really cuz he's conservatively the size of a hardwood armoire*)
But seriously: I again point you at disassociation. Batman seems like a really active response to grief, and the way unpretty writes it it physically IS... in the same way that a person who responds to grief by turning to alcohol or sex or thrill-seeking instead of going to the funeral is very actively partaking in those activities. Psychologically though it's actually a passive, avoidant response; a refusal to feel, to face, to deal with that pain. It's not Bruce's fault that he doesn't realize that he enjoys being poetic and eloquent or that he enjoys being GOOD at things(or that he enjoys LOOKING good and FEELING LIKE HE LOOKS GOOD and BEING ADMIRED FOR HIS BEAUTY, for that matter, or that helping someone cook connects him with his Dad) because BRUCE DOES NOT LET HIMSELF EXPERIENCE HIS EMOTIONS DIRECTLY. All of his emotions are exactly like that Horror and Trauma and Grief at the top right after Corinne had been shot: Moderated through performance as a 3rd Person experience of himself. He has no idea what he's feeling, and he hasn't had any idea what he's feeling since the night his parents were killed and he won't LET himself have any idea what he's feeling because to do so would be to MOVE ON and (he thinks)FORGET and ACCEPT THAT THEY REALLY ARE DEAD and he thinks that would be SELFISH!! BRUUUCE! BRUUUUUUCE!!!
UUUGH! Ok, that was actually a tangent and not what I ACTUALLY wanted to talk about here(tho also: EXACTLY what I wanted to talk about here):
"I don't have that," Bruce said. "His sense of taste. I don't think I've ever enjoyed anything as much as he enjoyed good soup."
This sentence is so huge, but you really need a bit more context to understand why. One: even aside from his trauma Bruce has a very detached and clinical way of thinking
The knife moved quickly and looked much fancier than when she did it. "You're really good at that," she said. "You should get your knives sharpened," he said. "Yeah," she agreed, pouring eggy water into her bowl to mix with a spoon. "Do you cook a lot?" "No." There was silence before he clarified. "I dislike the inefficiency." "Oh." "It's necessary to function," he said. "I prefer to spend my time on other things." ... "It isn't a matter of health or moral fortitude," he said carefully. "No more than you not drinking coffee. It isn't particularly admirable to not do things you don't enjoy. I don't enjoy food as much as other people do. That's all."
Two: Karen from HR is part of a wider body of work called Sorrowful and Immaculate Hearts(Read It!!!), and in it there is a fic about Bruce's parents, set when Bruce is a child, called Wayne Manor(You know the drill u_u), and in Wayne Manor it's very clear that Bruce is autistic, which the above way of thinking about things is an expression of. His parents are wonderful about this, and there's allot of evidence that Bruce's mother is also autistic and makes such a point about being wonderful about it due to her own abuse for being autistic as a child, and as a child Bruce seems to feel nothing but confidence and happiness in his autistic qualities. But the trauma of the death of his parents has somehow changed that.
I would argue that Bruce ties these autistic qualities, which he associates with his parents because they affirmed and celebrated and shared them, with the way he has responded to their murders, with Batman, which he is deeply conflicted about; something he consciously deems a MORE ethical, active, and "problem-solving" approach to death than mourning, while subconsciously recognizing is deeply fucked up and unhealthy for him and everyone in his life. He's come to attach his clinicality, his "dislike [for] inefficiency", to Batman, and thus as something which sets apart and isolates him; something "lacking" in himself which denies him the joy his father was able to feel. Again: obvsl that's bullshit for the reasons I listed above --his interest in doing things well is THE SAME THING his father felt, is something which his own decision to bring up his father shows connects him to his father IN THAT VERY SCENE and it is his disassociation from his trauma which prevents him from acknowledging and experiencing the joy he finds in doing things well-- but thoughts don't have to be rational for us to believe and hurt ourselves with them. Humans are irrational; human psychology is irrational.
Unpretty understands this so fucking well. She writes Bruce Wayne(and all these characters really) so fucking well. Unpretty's Bruce Wayne is a Deeply Irrational, Hyperrational, Hypercompetent Man. She has turned the power-fantasy of multiple generations of USian men into the Saddest and Wettest of Meow-Meows. This stuff is So Tasty numnumnum I eats it up I EATS IT!! Bruce is such a fucked up dude; his loves and self hatred all wound up and tied together and hiding themselves from him within a trauma Too Huge for him to ever face; "making himself useful" and "solving problems" to everyone and everywhere as an act of ultimate self-annihilation; Heroism as Self Healing as Self Destruction; The Noblest and most Beautiful of Lies; Delicious this Gourmet Fucking Meal she is serving us.
I don't read the comics and I can't call myself a huge fan of the movies, but I SO wish I could see a theatrical take on this character that understood as well as Unpretty does that Batman is a story Bruce Wayne tells himself and that it Isn't Fucking Helping.

Had to make posters for the Barbie Cinematic Universe!
Some context and explanations:
1st: In Barbie as Rapunzel. Otto says "Give him to me" and makes the "aughh" moaning sound.
2nd and 3rd: In Barbie and the Three Musketeers, Corinne's alias is "Lady Barbecue" and Prince Louis is sexist since he doesn't believe girls can be musketeers.
List of what films and characters are included in order:
Otto from Barbie as Rapunzel
Bibble from the Barbie Fairytopia films
Corinne and Prince Louis from Barbie and the Three Musketeers
Princess Brietta from Barbie and the Magic of Pegasus
Princess Rosella from Barbie as the Island Princess

It need not be a ceremony: but became one nonetheless, since one cannot walk into a chapel formerly of Talos, without spilling dreamlike, the blood of age-old tradition. Those priests claiming to be of the Eight, wear uncertainly their Thalmor-sanctioned robes; and swear oaths with bitten tongues. Were the leaders of the Thalmor to march into the Chapel at Bruma, the place would quake as Bruma had, twenty years before: and secret doors would shut downstairs, even as the priests shut their mouths. The Chapel formerly of Talos, was but a taste perhaps of Skyrim, –
‘I didn’t realise,’ said Marcurio at last, – who so rarely frequented chapels, that he blinked in the stained-glass reflexions, – ‘that you were the religious sort.’
‘I’m not,’ said I sighing: and pulled him downstairs.
Twenty years ago, the passion of Bruma and Thalmor bootsteps had so clashed, that the city had lost a beloved landmark: the statue of the Champion of Cyrodiil. The Thalmor knowing her to have been a Blade, did not care for the other details, which would only have exacerbated the matter: and promptly dashed her upon the cobbles. And when they’d gone, Bruma, silently, had pieced the past back together; and set her upon a private pedestal, in the chapel, to look upon the sorry vista of a town reduced to whispers and darkness.
I was so known at the chapel, as a frequenter of the statue, that I was waved through though accompanied by a stranger; and coming upon the statue, put my hand upon her foot. So many had done so before me, – and I’d done so often, – that the foot was half eroded; and glistened as her armour doubtless had, an age ago.
‘Corinne Traven,’ Marcurio read, from her plaque: ‘that’s the Champion, right?’
‘She was a Blade,’ I began: and fell silent.
My mother had been a Blade: perhaps that is why I so revered the Champion. My mother had gone in the Champion’s footsteps, at Cloud Ruler, in Bruma: and here I was, furtively reaching in the gloom for those disappearing feet. Knights in gold and silver armour: the statue had been painted, once: a chink of dulled colour, at the tip of her sword. What a Cyrodiil hers must have been! –
I revered her, for the very same reason that my contemporaries revered Talos: because taken away at the shattering of the past, they’d come in where memory began to fail, and stood for those things lost. It was, of course, easier to stand reverent at this statue, than at the forbidden idea of hardly anything at all, up in the chapel: I was not the only one who, while not deifying her, wondered sometimes in beholding her, what it had been like, when her blade had shone in blinding sunlight. I’d barely been alive, but others had been there, twenty years ago, –
And my mother, after all, had been a Blade, –
‘A silly thing, really,’ said I at last: ‘everyone who’s doing something difficult or dangerous or whatever comes down here to touch her foot… for good luck, you know. Just… just tradition.’
‘She must have been a remarkable woman,’ said Marcurio smiling: and quite without mockery though he knew not how deep it went, put out his hand likewise.

[TRANS] Last Fantasy Album and Song Introductions
Tumblr media
ALBUM INTRODUCTION
IU, who filled the whole world with ‘Good Day’ last year, is finally coming back with a new album for her fans. IU's new album [Last Fantasy] is a full-length album that she has released 2 years after her 1st album [Growing Up] and this album was produced by Cho Young-chul, who created the ‘IU Syndrome’ last year. Producer Cho Young-chul focused on approaching and expressing IU's musicality in more diverse ways through this album.
The meaning behind the title of the new album, [Last Fantasy], is that the album depicts all the thoughts, imaginations, and fantasies of IU as she looks upon the beginning of her 20s, in this moment at the end of her teenage years and the album contains various sides of IU that music fans want from her through her songs. This 2nd full-length album, which contains a total of 13 songs, attracts much attention with the participation of the best musicians and composers in Korea. Musicians who need no further explanation, including Kim Kwang-jin, Yoon Sang, Jung Jae-hyung, Lee Juck, Kim Hyung-seok, Jung Suk-won, Kim Hyun-chul, Yoon Jong-shin, Lee Min-soo, Corinne Bailey Rae, G. Gorilla, and Ra.D, all participated in IU's full-length album.
As this is IU’s first full-length album in a long time, she put in all her efforts and sincerity from many different angles, to make the album more perfect. In addition to putting her own self-composed song on the album, IU participated in writing the lyrics for a number of songs, showing a more mature side to her musical sensibility and carefully considered what the right tone would be for each song, as she did her best to improve the completion of the album.
First of all, the first track, ‘Secret’, is the work of composer Jung Suk-won, showing intense charm as a song that opens the door to IU’s second full-length album. Featuring an arrangement that emphasizes a clear story development and contrast, the song begins with IU's clear tone and a lyrical melody, then develops gradually with vocals that become more powerful and the grand sound of rock opera. Standing at the center of the song, IU showed powerful vocals that led all the music with her. The second track, ‘Sleeping Prince’, is the work of Yoon Sang, a composer who brought out IU's deep emotions with ‘Only I Didn't Know’. This song, which was brought to life again with an innocent charm that only IU can show, allows the listener to experience clear and bright emotions as if one were watching a fairytale. Just like how composer Yoon Sang felt that it was fortunate that IU sang this song when she was a teenager, IU's cute vocals and the warm arrangement meet to produce this high-quality song.
The third track, ‘Holding a Star in My Heart’ is a song by Kim Kwang-jin that conveys a deep sound that cannot be described with words. IU's vocals that sound like she is calmly reciting the song, together with the slow-flowing melodies, give a comforting feeling and Kim Kwang-jin's voice at the end of the song is touching to hear. The song, infused deeply with composer Kim Kwang-jin’s unique emotions, appeals to different generations. The fourth track, ‘YOU&I’, the title track of this second full-length album, is a collaboration between composer Lee Min-soo and lyricist Kim Eana, who created ‘Good Day’, and conveys IU's diverse emotions and upgraded musicality. ‘YOU&I’ is a song that once again showcases the charm of IU's vocals, with a mysterious and strange concept of a teenage girl who travels through time into the future. With a composition that crosses minor and major chords, a musical arrangement that stands out with its colorful and fantasy-like feeling of real sound using instruments rarely found in pop songs such as harp and horn, the song also allows you to experience IU's diverse vocal expression ability.
The fifth track, ‘Wallpaper Pattern’ is the work of composer Yoon Jong-shin, which shows IU's subtle emotions. It is a song that combines lyrical melodies with IU's warm tone and IU's interpretation of the song stands out as she perfectly interprets poetic lyrics that express ordinary emotions experienced in our daily lives. In particular, composer Jung Suk-won participated in the arrangement, giving it a more detailed sound. IU's song of encouragement for all the uncles in the world! The sixth track is ‘Uncle’ with composer Lee Juck. This song was completed with a discussion between IU and Lee Juck and IU's ‘aegyo’ (cute) tone captures the hearts of uncles along with the bouncy melody of the song. Lee Juck's rap made by IU's forced(?) request and IU's shout-out to her uncles are highlights to pay attention to in the song.
‘Wisdom Tooth’ is the work of composer G.Gorilla, who is loved by fans for his unique emotions, and is a song about the heart of a girl who suffered the heartache of her first love. As it is her first love, IU participated in writing the lyrics, to express more strongly the heartache from the perspective of a teenager in a pure and fun way and IU actually wrote the lyrics of the song after talking to her mother, expressing her honest feelings. ‘Everything's Alright’, the eighth track with a fast tempo and exciting feeling, is the work of composer Kim Hyun-chul. The song, which depicts the cold atmosphere of fighting with a lover, brings out that atmosphere by combining the warm sound of the actual performance and the harmony of IU and composer Kim Hyun-chul, who also featured in the song, and has a charm to it that leaves a lasting impression.
The ninth track, ‘Last Fantasy’, is the work of composer Kim Hyung-suk, and sounds even larger in scale than you would imagine a movie soundtrack to sound like. This song, which contains the grandeur of the 50-member orchestra, is a grand song that lasts more than six minutes and overwhelms its listeners. It is an impressive song that expresses IU's present state at the end of her teenage years with lyrics that ask someone to hold her hand so that she doesn’t fall into her dream when she opens the door to reality. The tenth track, ‘Teacher’ is by composer Ra.D, which IU also participated in writing the lyrics for. It is a song customized for IU from the start and a lot of time was invested in writing the lyrics to include all kinds of thoughts and concerns that 19-year-old IU had. The calm acoustic sound and emotional vocals of IU and Ra.D are combined to complete the charming song.
The eleventh track, ‘The Abandoned’, is a self-composed song written by IU. ‘The Abandoned’, which gives the feeling of a deep darkness, is a song that IU has worked on for a long time, and goes contrary to the bright side of herself that she has shown so far. This self-composed song by IU brings out her deep inner emotions that we never imagined her to have, instilling another kind of expectation from her fans with regard to her potential. The twelfth track, ‘4AM’, is a song by British singer-songwriter Corinne Bailey Rae, with lyrics written by IU and the song was completed with a collaborative effort between the two. The lyrics draw attention with their depiction of the unstable emotions at 4 a.m. and IU's deep vocals that she has not shown before allows the song leave an impression on the listener. IU sang this song by Corinne Bailey Rae, a musician she has said she loves the most since her debut, and that makes the song mean a lot to IU.
The finale of the full-length album, ‘L'amant’, is a song that allows the listener to experience the musical emotions of composer Jung Jaehyung as they are, through his work. IU’s mournful and thick vocals that flow through the sorrowful jazz melody add to the flair of the song. This song, which was fully completed with IU’s song interpretation ability, is a song that allows us to imagine the future of IU who shows that she can pull off a variety of genres. IU's second full-length album can be said to be a record that will remind the digital music generation of the ‘value of the album’ just by the team of participating musicians and the high quality of the songs. Let us all listen to the ‘charm of music’ that IU, who is highly anticipated by fans for her musical ability that combines musicality and popular appeal, will present through this album.

🐴🪄🛸 for the sso asks? :)
Horse is answered here!
🪄 [MAGIC WAND] -> Does your Original Character know about the magic powers existing across Jorvik? Do they know of the Sisterhood and the Keepers, of the Herds in Wild Woods, or Pandoria? If not, how do they explain some of the things happening around them (e.g. whatever Devil's Gap got going after the latest Main Quest)?
Alou's philosophy is "if I do not aknowledge it it does not exist. And even if it does it will not pay attention to me as long as I don't draw its attention and mind my own business." They do not know anything about magic, they have some knowledge on the uses of crystals but only because they use them in jewelry and it's a good thing to know when selling.
All the others know about the Sisterhood and the Keepers, and are part of the Keepers/druids! Zoe knows about the Herds from Kieron, but has promised him not to share. Corinne knows about the Herds on Wild Warden knowledge, again sworn to silence, it's a "trade secret" of sorts. They are all aware of Pandoria, and Elaina is training to specialize in exploring it.
Corinne's father introduced them into his coven at an early age, and they have been a witch for almost all her life. Crucially, the Keepers do not know about this, as she doubts they'd react well to it. Her coven does know about her druid status though, and they're cool with it.
Feya is sort-of-part of a hidden magical group. (homebrew lore). I will give no further info on that right now, I keep telling myself to make a post about it. Maybe I will sometime within uhhh 2 days and like 20 years. I mean... it's all there in faer name, really ;)
🛸 [U.F.O] -> What is your Original Character's opinion on Pandoria and the 'travel' through time and space taking place across some places in Jorvik? What about other legends and myths of Jorvik that they got to meet in person (e.g. Jon Jarl)?
Elaina loves Pandoria! She is very interested in it, which is why she accepted the explorer/researcher apprenticeship. The others all think she is insane for doing it but support her nonetheless.
They're really not that bothered by the time and space stuff, tbh. They mostly just use it to their advantage - Everlee most of all.
Since none of them are part of the main storyline, they haven't really interacted with any legends and myths as far as I can recall.
Alou lives in oblivious bliss.

Following Your Gut | Para
Featuring: Nichelle Rodriguez; mentions of @surgerodriguez & Pilar Rodriguez and the rest of The Rodriguez, as well as The Young family Time Frame: Afternoon, Oct. 26 2023 Notes: Nichelle's afternoon before the Boo Bash.
Normally when Nichelle wasn't busy for work, she would pick up Pilar from school, or accompany Surge in picking her up. Her workload had been on the lighter side lately which suited her well enough as she'd been feeling constantly tired as of late. With the Boo Bash happening, she was trying to get everything essential done so that she could enjoy the evening with her family.
After finishing the edits on an engagement photoshoot from the previous day and making headway on edits from a wedding she worked the previous weekend, Nichelle intended to take a small nap before getting into costume and meeting up with her husband, daughter and the other Rodriguez family members. Her efforts to nap had gone out the window though. She'd spent nearly an hour in bed, fully awake and feeling nauseous.
Finally giving up on the nap, Nichelle got up from hers and Surge's bed and went to the bathroom. She wasn't entirely convinced that she'd throw up but the feeling was only growing her suspicion that crossed her mind a couple days ago when she realized she'd been late on her menstrual cycle. She'd purchased a pregnancy test while buying some groceries for a stew she was making. But she hadn't rushed home to take it, thinking at the time that she'd wait and see. But now, waiting was feeling more and more nonsensical.
She'd never taken a pregnancy test before and while she knew it wasn't rocket science, it didn't stop her from reading the instructions first. After doing so, she felt a little silly for it. "Pee on the end of the stick. Wait to see what the screen says. Simple enough," Nichelle said to herself, followed by a nervous sigh. She'd done the first part of the instructions shortly after that, but during the waiting part, she leaned against the bathroom counter with her back to the test and stared up at the ceiling.
Nichelle already guessed what the results were but her mind was on her family. Her parents had just been up for a visit and just as she predicted, they were enamored by Pilar and probably went back home with a laundry list of Christmas presents they were going to buy her. There was no doubt in her mind that her parents would love and spoil this child just as much. Her sister still wasn't speaking to her, which honestly surprised Nichelle. It had been 4 months since she and Surge had gotten married. She and Corinne had never gone this long without speaking. But having a family of her own now and the high probability that it was growing soon just further told Nichelle that she couldn't keep dwelling on her sister's grudge. Surge's siblings were sure to be happy and supportive once they found out, and his mom had all the love in her heart when it came to her grandchildren.
But her main focus had been on Surge and Pilar. Pilar was likely to be over the moon about a little sibling, although she could surprise her and Surge and end up liking the way tings are with her being an only child and being the only on having all of their love and attention. And with Surge, it was because of Pilar that Nichelle knew without a shadow of a doubt that he was a fantastic father. But neither of them planned on having a baby right now, and she remembered him telling her about Pilar's birth, which had also been when he'd lost his best friend.
Drawing in a slow, unsteady breath, Nichelle turned around and looked down at the pregnancy's test's digital screen which plainly read: Pregnant. Closing her fingers around the test, she read the single word over about half a dozen times before letting the breath go that she'd unintentionally been holding. Nichelle didn't want to keep this from Surge; she wasn't in the habit of keeping secrets with him. At the same time, they were going out as a family tonight to do something out of their ordinary routine and it would be in a crowded, public space; she was going to need her focus on regulating that as much as possible.
Thinking for a moment, Nichelle placed the positive test in her make-up drawer, knowing the likelihood of Surge coming across it there was slim-to-none. She would tell him the news. Soon.

Secret (Armitage Summer Splash. Day 8)
Tumblr media
As part of @lathalea and I’s Armitage Summer Splash, I present to you, day 8.
Masterlist of fics for Summer Splash
Prompts: "Show me your face." / A secret is found out trope.
Fandom: The Stranger
Pairings: Adam Price x Fem!Reader
Warnings: Angst, language, miscarriage, ghosting, depression
Summary: You have ghosted Adam suddenly after being in a relationship with him for the last ten months. You seemed to be doing well, considering you were the first person he was seeing after Corrine's death. But why have you ghosted him? What secret is about to be told?
Comments/Notes: If anyone would like to be added to or removed from my tag list, please say. I have put a warning above for miscarriage mention and some description. However, it's not something I've experienced myself, but have tried my best to depict it tastefully and accurately.
Adam couldn't understand what had happened. The two of you were happy, or you seemed to be. It was not far off your ten-month anniversary. The age gap at first had been something you both suspected may have caused issues, but it never became a concern the longer your relationship went on. The ten year gap was nothing to you both.
And now you were ignoring Adam's calls. When he had gone to your flat, you didn't answer the door. It had been two weeks now since he had last seen you, and the pain of your absence and silence was pressing on his chest, gathering momentum day by day.
One evening he sat down at the laptop, a glass of whiskey next to his arm. An email had appeared in his personal inbox, the sender of the email only marked as John Smith. Your name was the subject of the email.
Adam opened the email and began to read; it was simple and to the point. Nothing, not even the sense-dulling whiskey, prepared him for what was to come. His eyes studied the email three times, re-reading the text. When suddenly bile reached his throat and he raced to the bathroom, vomiting into the toilet bowl.
How could you have kept this from him? How dare you not tell him!
***
You were still off work, and every morning you woke to feel the emptiness inside you. The emptiness felt as if it were growing, spreading outwards and consuming you.
Your phone chimed from the bedside table. You sighed, rolling over to grab the nuisance.
Don't you dare ignore me. I KNOW!
He knew? How the hell had Adam found out?
Then there was banging at your front door.
You took a deep inhale and shuffled through the hallway and down to the front door. The banging continued and you heard Adam's deep voice from outside. "You'd better open this door. I'm not going anywhere! Show me your face!"
Adam's face was contorted in anger. You could see he was livid. He pushed forwards, shoving the door open.
"How fucking dare you! I know you weren't planning on telling me. That was my child as well!"
You stepped back, feeling dizziness hit you.
Adam continued shouting at you as you walked down the hallway, trying to ignore his voice. But it was too much. "Oh, just shut the fuck up!" you screamed, turning back to face him.
Adam was taken off guard for a second; his eyes widened in disbelief at your outburst.
"You have your children, Adam. The boys will always be more important and special to you," you growled. "Corinne was your first love and all that."
"You can't fucking say that!" Adam bellowed. "I love you! Haven't I shown that to you enough. We spoke about Corinne so many times when we first started going out. You're no less important to me."
You broke down into tears in front of him. "This was my first baby, Adam. I'm thirty five and never thought I'd ever have children...and, you have the boys. You've already got children, and I'll always have this hole inside me. I never even knew I was pregnant until the bleeding."
Adam rushed at you and took you into his arms. "Shhh," he cooed. "I can't tell you it'll be okay, because it won't. But I'm here for you. I will always be here for you. Just...don't shut me out of this. I need to mourn with you."
You wept on Adam, holding him tight. "I want to wake up and this will all be a dream."
