one of two pairs of hooded mergansers that are in the pond today
i'm not sure if they're staying for a while; there's also a pair of mallards which call our pond home in the winter and spring the last few years
i avoid going near it until later spring to give them space
and this year there's also a pair of canada geese who are living around the pond enjoying the bright green grasses, i was hoping tearing out the old fence that was near the pond would encourage them

“The Big Buzz”,
To photograph this ball of cactus bees in Texas, Ms. Aigner had to get close with a macro lens. There is one female in the scrum, at the centre, with a male clinging on; the two then flew away to mate.
Undisturbed natural soil is important to the mating of bees, since 70 per cent of species nest underground. Habitat loss, pesticides and climate change threaten the insects’ future.
