Scaramona (as in the Harbinger, Scaramouche, and Mona) will always be the blueprint for the bickering, the clash of beliefs and worldviews, but more and more I come to love and appreciate Wandermona.
As the Wanderer, he’s now had to confront his previously held notions, to challenge his sense of self and his place in the world. He is discovering who he can be in this second chance he’s been given.
Mona’s story is still just beginning. Like Scaramouche, she has a very defined sense of self—genius astrologist, set on surpassing her master. I believe that also like Scaramouche, she will be forced to confront her worldviews when they are thrown back in her face (“The stars, the sky… it’s all a gigantic hoax. A lie.”) and have to redefine herself with this new knowledge.
Where Scaramona was about bickering and clashing ideals, I see Wandermona has an opportunity for discovery, reflection, overcoming. Traveling Teyvat together is one of my favorite headcanons (it’s almost a motif for me at this point) for them, and it suits Wandermona even more than Scaramona.
Mona and the Wanderer, trekking across the seven nations, sleeping under the stars, stopping by every bookstore and library to read, arguing about academics and the nature of fate and self-determination.

"You lied to me"
day 6 of @febuwhump
whumpee and caretaker
514 words
warnings: collapsed building, hospital setting
a/n: this one is a little fast paced, i finished it in about 20 minutes and didn't edit it, but i wrote it!
~
Caretaker stares at Whumpee’s fallen form on the ground in front of her. She falls to her knees and pulls his head into her lap. “Whumpee?”
Blood stains his clothes and is caked in his hair. What skin isn’t covered in old bruises is bleeding. But still, his chest rises and falls with each shallow breath.
He makes a sound of pained protest and opens his eyes.
“Oh thank god.” Caretaker exhales.
Whumpee mumbles something Caretaker doesn’t quite catch and she shakes her head. “It can wait. Let’s get you to the hospital.”
Whumpee shakes his head and his chest heaves with the effort it takes, but he manages to ask, “Whumper?”
Caretaker’s face falls and she bites her cheek. “I don’t know. There wasn’t enough time to get you and her out. But…you’ll be alright if she didn’t make it, right?”
He should be. She was terrible to him. Why is Caretaker asking? Because she needs to know he’ll be alright? Of course he’ll be alright, he always is.
He nods and mumbles something else that she doesn’t try to make out. Gently, she lifts him in her arms and carries him to her car. She loads him in the back seat and closes the door before jumping in the driver’s seat and starting the car.
It’s a blur once they get to the hospital. Checking in, being brought back to a room, doctors, nurses, call button, alarms and IV tubing. She’s so tired.
Whumpee’s hooked up to an IV drip and heart monitor. He’ll be alright if she just closes her eyes for a minute.
She stirs when the TV turns on, but her eyes stay closed. Maybe if she ignores it, it’ll turn off. Then she hears it. “Police report on the building that collapsed last night says that there was a body found among the wreckage. The identity hasn’t been released yet, but it’s suspected to be the owner of the house, Whumper. More on this as the day goes on.”
Whumpee turns the TV off and Caretaker can hear him moving on the hospital bed. She slowly opens her eyes and sees him.
“You lied to me.” He says plainly. “She’s dead.”
It’s a completely unreasonable conclusion. She told him she didn’t know if Whumper made it out or not. She told him she didn’t know. But he’s right, and she doesn’t have enough energy to hide it from him.
“I didn’t know how to tell you.” she whispers. “We had to get to the hospital, and you didn’t need to think about her.”
His face contorts to something like rage and he turns away from her. “You don’t think I had a right to know? She…was horrible to me. And you tried to keep her death from me? I just-”
“I was going to tell you.”
“I was talking.” he snaps. “I deserved to know when I asked. And you knew it. There’s no way you didn’t know. No way some little part of you screamed at you to tell me.”
Caretaker nods, a silent admittance of guilt.

Febuwhump Day 6: "You Lied to Me."
Fandom: The Bad Batch
Summary: Echo promises Hunter that he'll be okay facing Tantiss
"I'll be fine." That's what Echo had told Hunter when he asked how Echo was going to handle the mission.
"Are you sure?" Hunter knew this would be hard. An experimental facility with clones who had all faced something similar to Echo's own trauma. Everything seemed to be very uncomfortable for him. Every time they learned more about the facility, he seemed to find a way to leave the room.
"I'm sure." The truth was, Echo wasn't sure. He knew they needed the numbers and after Crosshair had taken part of his rescue, he felt like he owed him at least that. The thought of seeing someone he knew frightened him. But he had to go. Omega would be waiting.
So they gathered some of Rex and Echo's crew. They had planned their attack and the mission down to every minute. Tech would have been proud of the plan. There was no room for error.
On the ship Hunter checked in with Echo again. He walked around the shop and waited to arrive. Playing a waiting game was something the batch used to be good at. Now a waiting game was almost agonizing.
Upon their arrival, the batch, as well as Phee, Rex and a few others, split up. Each group went their separate ways. Hunter went with Echo and Rex while Wrecker went with Phee and some others.
As the batch maneuvered around the facility, Echo got more and more nervous. Even if there were few similarities between Tantiss and Skako Minor, the eerie feeling of the halls haunted him.
"We go in one three" Hunter spoke. "One" Echo started to regret coming. But he owed it to his family. "Two." He tried to prepare himself for what could be on the other side of the door.
    "Three."
Rex opened the door. Inside Crosshair laid on a metal table. He was strapped down. Hunter ran over to him and Rex started to undo the straps. Echo froze. He took a deep breath and then walked over as well.
Crosshair was awake. He sat up slowly as the last strap was undone. "It's okay" Rex tried to comfort him.
Slowly they prepared their brother for moving. Rex took him and helped him walk. "I'll get him to the ship. Can you two take care of it until I get back?" If anything was going to happen to Crosshair, Rex was not going to let that rest in their shoulders.
"Got it Rex." Hunter led Echo out of the room. They continued to go down the hall. "Wrecker, any word on the prisoner logs?"
"Yep. We found them. There's quite a few regs here." Wrecker sounded uneasy.
    "Got it."
"We are gonna need help to get them out Hunter. Rex had called back up. They aren't far but we'll need to kill some time."
"Start taking some of the regs to the Marauder.
    "Okay."
Hunter turned to look at Echo. "We start taking down 'medical' rooms."
Echo nodded. The two went to find the rooms. It didn't take long to find one. When they entered the room, the arc trooper froze in the door. He didn't think he could move.
Hunter pulled him inside. He didn't say anything as he looked around the room. Echo walked towards the table in the middle of the room. He looked around and tried to find something to do. But when he saw the needles he flew back. Tripping on his own metal feet, he fell to the ground.
The man's breathing quickened. Hunter abandoned him spot in the room and kneeled down beside him. "Echo" he said. His tone was a lot kinder than he expected.
Staying in the room seemed impossible. Echo stood, panicked. He went for the door. Hunter tried to stop him but he was in the hall before he could do anything.
The Sargent watched him fall. He heard the gun shot that he prayed hadn't killed him. "Echo" he whispered. The man moved slightly. Without another thought, Hunter went into the hall and pulled his brother back into the room.
"You lied to me." Hunter couldn't think. "You lied to me." Echo just listened to him. He couldn't say anything. He was right, he had lied.
As Echo faded in and out of consciousness he listened to Hunter mutter to himself. "You lied. You did you would be fine. You lied to me."
Echo knew he lied to him. He knew that. He shouldn't have gone. Maybe he should have taken Crosshair back or maybe he should have just let Hunter sit with him when he started to panic.
"I'm not going to let you lie to me. You're going to be fine. You'll be fine."
"You lied." The world went dark as Hunter spoke.
Time passed. Hunter took Echo to the ship and faced Tantiss. Soon the reinforcements arrived. With minimal casualties, the clones escaped hell.
The lights near where Echo laid was dim. Hunter spent most of his time around him and around Omega and Crosshair. The feeling of responsibility weighed heavily on him. He laid his arms on the bed. Then he placed his head in his arms. "you lied to me."

Rain's LU Febuwhump: Day 6
"You lied to me.": Twilight & Wild
Art
“You- your.”
“Wild please.”
Twilight wished the situation had happened better than this. He’d planned to tell Wild that he and the wolf who’d guided him on his journey had been one and the same in a safe environment.
When the younger one had been having a good day. Maybe when they were talking about their journeys. Maybe he’d tell everyone all at once. Instead, he’d gotten a badly timed portal, a hoard of monsters armed to the teeth, and a shit ton of blood. Oh, and a very distressed Wild after a memory returned to him mid-fight.
“You lied to me.” He whispered. Wild pushed Twilights hands away, moving them up to his face and tugging on his ears, his hair.
“Do you know why I like Wolfie? Because-“ His words were cut off with a sob.
“I can’t talk to people. I don’t know how! Whenever I travel to towns, people judge me and I understand! I understand I’m different! But I hate having to put up with the stares and whispers and people telling their children to stay away from me!”
Wild looked at Twilight. “I have been called countless names, I have been called feral and abnormal. And I told Wolfie everything because animals are easy to understand. They don’t lie or judge me for who I am.”
“Wild-“
“And you sat there, while I pored my heart out to you-“
“I care about you Wild!”
Twilights sudden interruption made the younger stop suddenly. Twilight held out his hands as an offering, but when Wild didn’t take them he continued.
“I know that you may not see it, but we all do. You are my brother. And I can assure you there is nothing wrong with you.”
Twilight sighed. “I listened to what you had to say, and I try my hardest to help you because I love you. Ok? And yeah, I know that you might feel betrayed or like I was lying to you but I never wanted to hurt you.”
Wild sniffled. “Promise?”
Twilight opened his arms and this time Wild accepted the invitation. “I promise, cub.”
Wild laughed shakily. “I may have over reacted a bit.”
“No.” Twilight whispered. “I understand why you feel that way. But everything’s going to be okay now.”

Maybe I'm just difficult
Maybe I'm impossible
Maybe I'm just one step over the edge
You're one foot out the door
Maybe I'm emotional
Too much to handle
Or
Maybe I'm unlovable

Dismissed
Nico doesn’t need to see the red stamp on the chart hanging next to the bed to know he’s got that monster’s venom in him. He can feel it running through his veins right now.
There’s claw marks in his ribs and across one shoulder, a bite wound on his neck, and a thick bandage on his thigh from where a piece of rebar was driven all the way through his leg. He’s looking at PT for months just to get back on the job, if that’s even possible.
But none of that hurts as much as watching his partner bleed to death feet away from him, unable to reach him because he was literally pinned down.
Maybe he shouldn’t be going back into the field at all, if he can’t even keep the guys with him safe.
“Mr. Pontevecchio. You’ll need to sign these.” A handful of papers are slid onto the tray in front of him. “You know the drill for on the job injury.”
He does. It wouldn’t be the first time he’s taken a hard hit. That’s what he’s here for. The tank of any team he’s on, barreling in first, taking the hits and doling them out, giving as good as he gets.
This time, he didn’t even come close to doing that.
He fumbles through the signature lines marked with little yellow sticky tabs, his handwriting shaky but good enough to count. Everything has to be done yesterday around here.
“Since it happened during an active, sanctioned hunt, you are eligible for severance pay.”
“What?”
The painkillers are making everything a little hazy, but when he reshuffles the papers, he can see the one that is very clearly a notice of termination. That he just signed off on.
“The hell is this?”
“Standard operating procedure for infection when the vamp doesn’t get staked.” It’s their unit chief, now. Sneaky bastard appeared as quietly as a vamp. Either that, or the mix in that IV is a lot stronger than Nico’s leg is telling him.
He’d thought the guys who got bitten quit. Either because they got spooked, wanted out of the game after that, or because they felt too sick to keep doing such a demanding job.
He didn’t know they were all mandatorily fired.
“If someone gets the guy, you’re free to come back. But as of right now, you’re a liability. If we put you in the field, you could lead your team right into an ambush. Put you on a desk, no way to know you’re not feeding the information that comes past you on to whatever coven wants you in their back pocket.”
“This is bullshit and you know it.” Vamps can’t create a mental link with a still living human unless that human has drunk some of their blood.
“It’s protocol. I know you think that’s all protocol ever is. You’re already a loose cannon at the best of times. That’s not making this decision any harder.”
It’s probably not the best idea to snarl at the guy like a feral animal, but Nico is fresh out of good ideas.
“No one wants that guy more than me, Sawyer. You know it.”
“That’s exactly why you’re not on the hunt, Pontevecchio.” The unit chief snaps, snatching the papers off Nico’s tray table like he’s afraid Nico’s going to lunge for them and tear them up.
Damn, he wishes he’d have thought of that a little sooner.
“You’ve got no desk to clear out, but you’ll need to return the gear in your car to the ward office as soon as you’re on your feet. Keeping any of that is gonna get you an immediate charge of theft of our property. Got it?”
Nico nods.
He doesn’t really need their gear. All any hunter worth their salt needs is a sharp piece of wood and a good head on their shoulders.
And a motivation.
He’s got that in spades.
He’s going to have to find that vampire and kill him.
It’s the only way to get his life back.

Febuwhump Day 6 - You Lied To Me
From The Queen of Lies:
Hatchett’s foot swung backward but didn’t go to his face; rather, it rammed back into his stomach, and that was somehow worse, because the thief couldn’t catch his breath and he was coughing and it already hurt and how the fuck had things gone so wrong so fast and she’d been lying to him and Hatchett was there and—
“What was my wife doing in your cell with you?”
The thief wheezed, trying to understand the words. Wife. Cell. You. Same question, then. Same answer.
Why didn’t you ever actually ask her for her name, you idiot?
She’d lied, she’d lied, she’d lied, she’d…
“Nothing!”
Breanna Hatchett. Breanna Fucking Hatchett.
Why didn’t you—
Her voice was in his head, too, along with the voices of so many others—Hatchett, his brother, his friends, the ghostly ringing of his parents…
“You lie. What do you want with her?”
He was so, so fucked.
