Lesson in Murder

Movies watched in 2023
Lesson in Murder (2022, Japan)
Director: Kazuya Shiraishi
Writer: Ryo Takada
Mini-review:
I actually liked this movie more than I expected. It's a pretty solid thriller, and it ends up being more surprising than it might seem at the beginning. The final twist works pretty well, because the movie slowly sets up all the pieces without the viewer realizing it. I must admit I didn't really get the final scene, and that a few other moments made me go "wtf was that". Otherwise, most of the story makes sense, which is not always a guarantee when it comes to twisty thrillers.
That being said, the acting is probably the movie's strongest point. Sadawo Abe plays against type, but, at the same time, this role makes use of his particular set of skills in a way that no other project has before. His performance is chilling, creepy and absolutely convincing. Koshi Mizukami (credited here as Kenshi Okada) makes for a great counterpart, and he never gets overshadowed, even though his role is not as showy. Anyway, this is a well-acted and well-directed thriller that kept me pretty entertained.

Mei's Thoughts on Miyazaki Division
Tumblr media
Himari Asami
"A prison gal, huh? Well, looking at her record, its a wonder she doesn't call the big house her 'home away from home'. I guess joining the D.R.B. was her ticket out of staying another night in a cell? Well, let's just hope she can stay out this time, but I'm not holding my breathe that she does."
Rinko Yamate
"I think I recognize her. She's a violinist or something, right? I think Kaori did a short concert with her. I'll admit, she can play well, but seeing as I don't the nothing about playing instruments, perhaps my opinion isn't valid."
Kyoko Maruyama
"A shrine maiden? You mean like a priestess? My mother was one of those for Zhurong, the Fire Goddess of my people. Everyday, she had rituals that started at the crack of dawn. I admired her perseverance; I don't know if I could do all that she did. As such, this girl has my respect. ...She could do with some toughening up, though."
Beautiful Nightmare
"So... seeing as the Prime Minister basically let these three off the hook in exchange for competing in the D.R.B., does that mean they're technically on our side? ...Probably not. Meh, it doesn't really matter. As good as they look, I'm sure we'll have no issues against them."

Kyokos thoughts on Toshima Division
Kaori Narizuka
“She seems sad…like really really sad! I wonder if she’s doing alright?” Kyoko leans back in her chair “I saw this lady outside the shrine once…she seemed to like the Sakura trees! She also didn’t kick the god damn fox that I was trying to chase down so that makes her okay in my book!”
Mei Yu
“This lady scares me…I don’t wanna talk about her” Kyoko looks away and pouts
Lillian Rees
“ARE YOU A ROBOT-! Okay fine I’ll shut up about it!” Kyoko sighs “I swear she sounds rather robotic whenever she speaks…she’s always so analytical!”
“Other than that…she’s fine I guess”
Inner Circle
“They all seem fine…Yu-san scares me though so I don’t wanna have to fight her!” Kyoko glances at Rinko “If we do fight she’s most likely gonna go toe to toe with the Electric Rose…I pray Rinko doesn’t get burnt”

How the dorm leaders find out my Yuu-sona (Miyazaki Yukiko) is a girl
This post is inspired by another Tumblr post that I saw and thoroughly enjoyed.
Tumblr media
Riddle: Finds out when Heartslabyul offers to help clean Ramshackle dorm together with Yu and Grim (after chapter 1). He accidentally spills a bucket of water on her, and he notices her sports bra underneath her uniform. He then finds out he is the last of the Heartslabyul boys to find out Yukiko is a girl, much to his embarrassment.
~
Leona: Knew the moment she stepped in front of the Dark Mirror (due to her scent), but kept it a secret out of respect. That is until Yukiko's gender was accidentally revealed to the whole school (and the whole of Twisted Wonderland...) after the Magift/SpellDrive tournament.
~
Azul: Found out together with the whole school after the Magift/SpellDrive tournament. He did not think too much about it until he realised he could use her to increase Monstro Lounge's popular(Idia introduced him to maid cafes).
~
Kalim: Finds out after the Magift/SpellDrive tournament, but soon forgets about it. Was reminded by Jamil again at the end of chapter 4 when Yukiko wore a full swimsuit to the oasis party.
~
Vil: Suspects something when Yukiko was looking for a club to join and stumbles into his club(before chapter 2). She gave tips on how one of the club members can enhance their performance as a female character. His suspicions were confirmed during the Magift/SpellDrive tournament.
~
Idia: Finds out after the Magift/SpellDrive tournament. He does not really think too much about it, but does find it amusing since there are many anime and manga with plots that involve a female student attending a boys-only school while in disguise.
~
Malleus: Finds out on the night he first meets her (during chapter 2). Yukiko using 'Watashi' instead of 'Ore' or 'Boku' to refer to herself and Malleus quickly realize she is a girl, which she did not deny. Yukiko also deeply resembled a girl that kept appearing in his dreams.

Live action Yu Yu Hakusho liveblog: ep 1
This is so much fun. Nostalgia time. 13 year old me is LIVING
Warning for like whole ep 1 spoilers and all
Yusuke and Botan look great which I already knew going in from the gifset that informed me this show exists lol, but it's delightful, bc the characters in this show aren't necessarily the easiest to translate to live action
Botan is adorable. Her hair is adorable. And I'm delighted to see that Yusuke's hair is the Correct amount of Poufy
Plot twist: Kuwabara hot. He looks great actually. Translated nonliterally compared to Yusuke but v well. The actor is selling me on it too, fun casting
Kuwabara was always hard for me to watch in the original bc he set off my vicarious embarrassment soo hard. Glad they're less committed to making him the constant source of painful comedic relief here lol
KOENMA PACIFIER REVEAL I LOVE IT
Laughed out loud for real tbh
Idk if I'm a little disappointed he's not a baby but like live action would make that ridic hard to do in a lot of ways so I don't blame them at all. He's in his adult form which makes sense. Still damn glad they kept the pacifier it is RUINING his dignity and I love it
I also don't blame them for cutting the flying oar effects. A lil sad but the initial transition to Reikai looked great so they're forgiven
Yusuke. "No thanks." I knew it was coming and the delivery still made me laugh out loud. Just dropped it in there. Yusuke I love you please see a therapist
Fight scenes are v creative and p epic
Seriously they do a really good job of making Yusuke's fighting style as a human believable, fun to watch, and effective. He rly does come off as just kind of a natural fighting genius (with practice ofc)
Sakyo in ep 1? Weird but I'm not opposed. The wavy hair is kinda freaking me out though ngl. Smoothness was just such his THING in the show it's distracting
Really liked Yusuke's mom's introduction (not that it was flattering to her as a character) but I wish they'd done more with her in the rest of the ep. Her power hug at the end is great tho
Show's slowing down a bit but it's fine I'm still having fun, the nostalgia power will get me through basically whatever
NO PUU!!!! This is tragic but I Do understand this as an adaptation choice. Reluctantly. Tragic tho.
Bug under guy's face effect EPICALLY creepy
That said I keep watching the motion of him and the other demons in this ep and thinking about Hayao Miyazaki said about the disgusting cruelty of using effects technology to make the scary scary inhuman monsters just fucking. look and move like disabled ppl
Seriously I keep seeing flashes of the appearance and movements of people I know with developmental disabilities (particularly this one guy I know with cerebral palsy but also I've worked in care work for disabled adults and just kind of a lot of people in general) and. I hate this. Especially as a person who DOES have a (nonvisible) developmental disability myself. This is such a rising trend in horror/sff/fantasy tv/movies/video games and I hate everything about it. Hayao Miyazaki was right this kind of attitude and shit really is "an insult to life itself"
Anyway fight scene cool
I love Keiko btw. Her crying and blaming herself! Her face when Yusuke comes back! Also Yusuke "I'm not gonna die just bc you talked shit" pffft jackass (affectionate)
DEMON CREW CAMEO AT THE END
Kurama looks pretty good. Goki actually looks wayyyy better than he did in the anime imho, which I did not see coming.
Effects on Kurama and Hiei's fighting looks surprisingly great. They pulled off the rose whip way better than I thought they would, and did some great wirework with Hiei's speed and fighting style
That said....Hiei...oof. That hair was always gonna be a Challenge but I think their ambition here did uh. not play off rip. Hopefully it'll look better later on

A Sign of Affection Episode 1 Review - Love Under The Silent Snow
This is actually a really good premise for a romance show! I really like it! It’s unique in that it’s a shoujo set in a college environment when the genre usually prefers high school love stories. The fact that it’s a love story between a hearing-impaired girl and her upperclassman who is a globetrotting backpacker is also interesting! I really liked what I saw in this first episode!
Tumblr media
I know that there’s going to be a lot of comparisons to A Silent Voice, but A Sign Of Affection actually differs a lot despite sharing similar premises. Unlike A Silent Voice, being deaf isn’t all of Yuki Itose’s shtick as she has so much personality despite being reserved. While she cannot hear, she still loves cute things like clothes and objects; heck, the story starts with Yuki happy that she got a very cute dress for a good price. She’s not bullied for being deaf, nor is she treated as lesser for her disability. She’s an ordinary college student who just happens to be deaf. She communicates well with her friends and her schoolmates. She has a good relationship with her mom. She’s never seen as pitiful, which is a good thing as stories about disabilities shouldn’t be seen as pity-parties all the time; those with disadvantages can still live happy lives. While it defines her, it’s not who she is all the time. She’s not a poor girl who needs to be constantly saved by an able-bodied knight in shining armor; in fact, he only helped her once and she becomes infatuated that she’s the one going out of her way to get his deets. Yeah, get your man, Yuki! I do like that while her life is peaceful, she still has some ups and downs that aren’t dramatic like how her friend Rin had to explain to Kyouya, the cafe owner about Yuki’s disability, which Yuki catches on about, but doesn’t say anything. She knows that her disadvantages will always have these little minor aspects, and listening to her thoughts really makes me want to give her a hug.
I know that some people might question why Yuki has hearing aids, but cannot hear very well. Hearing aids don’t give deaf people complete hearing, just partial. Maybe Yuki is wearing them just so she can show people that she’s deaf and that it wouldn’t cause misunderstandings. Who knows? Like how people like carrying around devices that give them convenience and comfort, Yuki most likely does the same. Maybe she wears them because she’s comfortable doing so and it’s more of a habit than than anything. I hope this does get explained a bit in future chapters so that viewers won’t have to ask questions constantly.
Itsuomi Nagi is quite interesting as the male lead. He’s a globetrotting backpacker, meaning that he doesn’t like to stay at one place all the time. While he’s a college student, he likes going to foreign countries. Because of that, he’s familiar with different languages. His voice actor, Yu Miyazaki is actually proficient in English and it shows! The way he asked the guy on the train if he needed any help was actually good English, albeit a tad accent on the “need” part. Still, an English speaker like me approves of it! I do wonder if his wanderlust will be a source of conflict or if it’ll be a source of bonding between our leads. Personality-wise, Itsuomi doesn’t seem like a scumbag. However, he is a bit too touchy when it comes to Yuki and that does bother me a bit. Maybe because I don’t really like skinship and I value my personal space. I feel like this guy’s only flaw is that he’s too touchy and doesn’t respect Yuki’s personal boundaries. Other than that, I just hope he’s a nice guy. Please don’t make him turn out to be a red flag. Please…
Rin is actually a really good friend. She doesn’t pity Yuki and treats her like an equal. However, there is still a slight border between her and Yuki at times. She has a huge crush on Kyouya Nagi, the cafe owner and Itsuomi’s cousin. I want to see more of her; maybe her and Kyouya are the side couple that helps Yuki and Itsuomi get together?
However, that Oushi guy though… He gives off weird vibes. He saw Yuki running along all happily and he was like “What’s wrong with her?” I just hope he’s not that one jerk who treats Yuki as lesser due to her disability. He’s gonna be on my shit list if that happens. I can’t wait to see other characters too.
I really love the implementation of snow used in this episode. Yes, the ‘snow means love’ trope is a cliche, but damn it, it works. Heck, the kanji in Yuki’s name literally means snow. She’s her own ‘snow means love’ trope. I do love the symbolism of snow in a way. Snow falls down and it is a silent weather condition, much like how Yuki’s world is a silent one. Snow is also white and blank, meaning that Yuki’s white world can finally be full of color now that she met Itsuomi. Maybe I’m looking into this a bit too much.
The voice actors are so good. Sumire Morohoshi is finally a lead in a shoujo anime. She has a soft voice that works well for the reserved shoujo leads; she suits Yuki so well. Yu Miyazaki is actually a voice actor I’m not too familiar with, but I do like his voice. It sounds perfect for someone like him. Like, he doesn’t sound too young or too old. I also love that he can speak English too. I hope he can speak more later on! Other voice actors in this show are Kaede Hondo, who plays Rin—good choice for a rising star; Ryota Ohsaka voices Kyouya—he always has a nice voice that suits ikemen characters; Takeo Otsuka voices Oushi—I need to see more to evaluate more; Tasuku Hatanaka voices the hair salon guy—wait, what? I never knew Hatanaka could produce a voice like that. I usually associate him with his rather gravelly, gruff voice. That’s so cool. Anyways, I do wonder who else will be in the voice cast of this anime. I’m satisfied with the results.
Overall, I think this has the potential to be a great romance. I can’t wait to see what it has in store. If I really enjoy it once it finishes airing, I’ll definitely buy the manga! What are your thoughts on the first episode?

Spirited Away (2001) by Miyazaki Hayao - Blog 23
Spirited Away (2001) by Miyazaki Hayao is a Japanese animated film produced by Studio Ghibli. The story begins with a little girl named Chihiro, who is traveling with her parents to a new home. They encounter a tunnel and explore through it. The parents turn into pigs as a consequence for eating Yubaba’s guests food. With the help of a mysterious boy, Haku, Chihiro becomes contracted with Yubaba in order to survive the spiritual world by working. She uses this opportunity to find a way to return her parents back to normal and return to their world. Towards the end of the movie, Haku is gravely injured from stealing from Yubaba’s twin sister, Zeniba, and Chihiro ventures by train with No Face, Bo, and Yu-bird to return Zeniba’s stolen good. Then, Haku goes to retrieve Chihiro and Bo after waking up from his short coma. At the end, Chihiro was able to break the contract, bid her farewells, and return home with her parents.
It was my first time watching Spirited Away. I remember vaguely that I might have watched it half way through when I was younger, but I believe it was because I did not understand the film as much compared to being older. So far, I really like the film’s storyline and the art. The music was nice along the way too. When Chihiro was going down the stairs to the boiler room, the moment she broke through the step, it gave me a big jumpscare. The encounters with the susuwatari were very cute. The way that they realized Chihiro could carry the heavy rocks for them was adorable. Despite their job being in possible risk, they quickly enjoyed Chihiro’s presents and defend her against Kamaji. After Chihiro started working, she has a few encounters with No-Face. My thoughts on No-face is he is like a lonely kid. He is always alone until he met Chihiro who showed him a small amount of kindness. Although it was a bit shocking to me to have seen the outcome of him after getting rejected by Chihiro, but watching him become back to normal and follow her just as he used to made me feel like things are getting back to normal again.
There was one scene I thought was interesting. While Chihiro, No-face, Bo, and Yu-bird are on board the bus. There is one shot where you can see Chihiro facing the side against her reflection in the window. In her reflection, her eyes and skin looked empty. It looked like we were seeing her soul in the reflection, while she is manuevering her somewhat soulless body.  I am pretty content with the ending of Spirited Away. I would like to rewatch the Dub version sometimes eventually. It is not my first time watching a film produced by Studio Ghibli. My childhood favorite film produced by them is Ponyo. I’ve watched it in both dubbed and subbed. I am hoping to watch more of their films in both translations.

Can I ask what you use to animate??
Yus of course! I'm always very excited to help other people get into animation.
Right now I use Tahoma2d, it is free and a more user-friendly version of OpenToonz which is the famed, also free, software used for a lot of Miyazaki films. I used OpenToonz before Tahoma and def found Tahoma more intuitive. (Side note, you do need a decent computer to run it and not lag. I get by on an old, no-upgrades microsoft surface pro with a little finagling, though.)
It took a while for me to figure it out, and I probably am only familiar with 1/3rd of its capability tbh, which is enough to make what I want to make, tho I'm constantly learning more. I used tutorials on youtube to learn, there's a lot of good ones! You can use the opentoonz tutorials for tahoma too, basically the same interface
I never pay for art programs and thankfully there are plenty of people who believe they should be accessible that there are a lot of free resources.
I have also dabbled with GreasePencil in Blender, but yikes the learning curve is so steep, there are so many little technical details in the software that hold me up for hours. I want to learn it more someday, when I have the time, because it can do sooooo much!
I'll also add, that when I was first starting out and just wanted to be able to produce animations without much fuss, I used Pencil2d. Very simple! It helps to use that if one gets frustrated with learning a more complex program like Tahoma. Take a break, animate something easy that makes you happy, then try figuring it out again.
I do my thumbnailing, sketches etc in Medibang Paint, and if I need some video editing stuff, (like piecing together segments of a scene because i learned the hard way you're not meant to animate full 5-minute long scenes in one file lmao) I use Davinci Resolve, but I barely know how to use that one lol. That one is massive with effects and capabilities also. That one lags my laptop a lot more than tahoma..
You didn't ask for all this, but I tend to info dump because there are so many things i wish i knew when i first started animation. The downside of self-taught -- not knowing what questions to ask!, That said, idk if my information is even that great, being that I have no experience with the professional industry. Oh well, I hope this is helpful!
