a bit different from my usual posts but I'm just so happy with how this project for one of my art classes turned out, so I'm posting it here! we had to pick a children's book from a list and design a new cover for it, and I ended up going with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (partly as an excuse to render gold because that's one of my favorite things to do)

OUGH I LOVE GETTING TO TALK ABOUT SILHOUETTES

(NOTE all rules have their time + place to be broken these are mostly general ones)

for starters: HERE is an old tutorial i made for some classmates back in my character design class, really only the first part is silhouette based but i do have it

now for the new stuff: my 5 biggest personal rules for silhouette design! in order, they are:

Group Design Exaggeration Shape Language Proportion Toolkit Awareness

here's some ideas for further exploration!

for exercises to understand these concepts on your own:

-break down designs you like into their major shapes, and note how the shapes add to the personality -annotate a design you like, including every little detail. how many tufts are at the end of a piece of hair? how many joints are in the fingers? do the lips connect to the mouth? -draw the same character with triangular, square, and circular shapes-- literally just the shapes, don't get fancy with the linework. pay attention to how this changes the silhouette -"break apart" a pre designed character and resize different pieces to watch the proportions change. bonus: this will make some really funny images -compare three designs from the same piece of media and look for rules 2-4 in them. what's been exaggerated? what shape languages do they all use? how do their proportions vary? what are the rules of their art style?

media to study for more understanding of shapes and silhouettes/media that explores and pushes these rules successfully: -steven universe -clone high -total drama -veggietales (yes, really.) -ninjago (toolkit only; for obvious reasons, character silhouettes are not that distinct)

You do your art traditionally, right? How do you scan it so neatly?

Before I used th scanner method, which can be found here, but now I use the app IbisPaint X to just extract the line art from phone pictures! It’s super easy and quick!

1) So here’s a regular picture before editing. This method works best for smaller drawings (you can use a printer to scan larger works ^^) for clarity’s sake!

2) Once you’ve selected an image, choose a size (I usually just choose originl), press to “Extract Line Drawing, and adjust “White” to lighten the image!

Eraser mistakes and crop and you’ll be done! Be sure not to lighten too much or you’ll lose some shading.

3) If the line art is too light, you can just duplicate the line art to darken it!

I also use an eraser at a large size and very light opacity to lighten up certain areas that are still too dark.

4) It even works for pictures that don’t have the best quality

Hope this helps! I’ve used this method on nearly all of my art since a few months ago and it works every time! IbisPaint X is also just a really cool app with a bunch of features and it’s FREE! Good luck drawing!
