Happy Beltaine 2023 Today, 1st May, is the Pagan festival of Beltaine or Beltane, traditionally celebrated in Northern Europe, esp Scotland and Ireland, to encourage the cultivation of bountiful harvests. To celebrate I have made book Fires of Beltaine available as a free download on Kindle, until midnight PST. "A world in nuclear turmoil. A young man flees London for the forgotten Scottish island of Invermore. But when he encounters the barbaric fishlike natives, he realises he has replaced one hell with another. The media are scaremongering again, screaming “nuclear annihilation” – the Russian-Ukranian war, threatening to plunge the world into Armageddon. Michael Mann, a young Londoner, flees the media circus, for the quieter climbs of Aberdeen on Scotland's northeast coast. While visiting the local pub, Mann meets grizzled seaman Frank McTavish, who tells him about Beltaine, a spectacular Gaelic festival, to be held by the islanders of Invermore two days hence. Instantly Mann's head is filled with visions of scantily clad beauties throwing themselves around roaring bonfires, to the rhythm of hypnotic drumbeats. The next day he is ferried to the island of Invermore by independent ferry-master Ron Buchanan. On arriving at the quiet harbour, Mann's initial enthusiasm is somewhat doused when he sees the town's dereliction. However, when he meets the crude fishlike natives the crumbling town becomes the least of his worries. He realises the Invermorian's do not see him as a tourist, but as a sacrificial lamb, who they must offer to their pagan gods for the granting of prosperity. I can hear its pain in the timbers of my home, In the howls of distant hounds, And the yowls of scrapping cats. The night is dying. I can hear its thoughts decay to sleep, And sleep proceed to dreams. The night is dead! Called me, The Antique Collector... Although my collection was without rival, it lacked sparkle. It didn't quite have that “Wow Factor”, didn't quite have that stand-out piece that you look for. But the heavens must've been smiling on me. Everything fell into place. One Sunday morning, whilst listening to the wireless, it came on the news that Celebrity gangster Terry “The Gun” Gunnarsson hadn't long to live. The reports mentioned that he'd been rushed to Charing Cross hospital. Adding the cancer would kill him within a week. Well, I couldn't miss an opportunity like that - the one and only Terry Gunnarsson. Like a few East-End villains he boxed as a youth. In 1952, he even got his hands on the famous Lonsdale belt - the one given to British boxing champions. However, spent three years at Her Majesty's pleasure, in Belmarsh, for that theft. His roguish ways and best selling books, had him cherished up and down the country. I couldn't miss adding that rough diamond to my collection. Before he died I went down Charing Cross. Paid him a visit. It's not like he wasn't going to die anyway, just gave him a little helping hand, that's all. Iron fear filled my mouth, as I gazed at the lady in my chair, sat with her back to me, with hazy, golden locks, and a dress cascading like moonlight. I wondered if she heard me gasp, when courage leapt from my chest, or knew I'd covered my eyes, only to free them, again, to worship her. I wonder if she ever knew I was there at all, watching her, watching the darkness. I died to speak, ask who she was, but tongues twist to silence, when courage departs. ~ Power of Love ~ With sunshine smiles we agreed that it had been the power of love, and love only that had guided us into one another's arms. The twisting hand of fate, perhaps, but no, it was love, we were certain. For what other force brings lonely souls together. Dystopian Dreams As a sapling I gazed upon evergreen things Now I'm deep rooted in this dystopian dream The landscape anaemic and homo sapien built The grass beneath me... deadening slabs of concrete The trees in my midst... towers of manmade fibers. The cattle and sheep... grumbled cars and beeping buses. Through tearful eyes I watch the people blur on by Crowns lowered, frantically chased by their demons. These souls rarely lift their eyes, rarely notice me Me, the one single truth of this urban jungle The children, they notice though, their minds demon free Green, uncorrupted, just as nature intended. In their joy, children would climb and swing on my limbs Enjoying me, savouring me, worshiping me Til some men with rock hearts thrust this fence around me But I have grown and its wrought iron strangles me Tearing into my flesh like cheese wire to cheddar.
