Continued from here:

The entire time that Elwin had been sitting at the current Dominant of Phoenix's bedside, his thoughts had alternated between two subjects: first was of course concern teetering onto fear for the young woman, while the second was the memories of his father's life as the previous Dominant of Phoenix and the heavy toll it had taken upon the older man.

Of course, it went without saying that these two subjects were intrinsically linked. And just as he had been powerless to ease that burden carried by his sire, he was just as powerless now to ease that same burden carried by Anabella. But unlike with his father, Elwin was more prepared now -- prepared and aware, so that he might instead help in supporting the young woman as she lifted that weight, rather than mourn his inability to take that weight from her shoulders entirely.

So deeply entrenched was he in his ruminations, that the man failed to notice the Archduchess's eyes open. It was when her weakened voice filled the silence that Elwin's gaze lifted, and the flood of relief that washed over him was instantaneous. For as exhausted as he was in all ways -- physically, mentally, emotionally, every moment spent waiting had been worth it. Worth the anxieties, worth the fatigue, worth the self-appointed deprivation towards his own needs, just to hear that gentle little laugh of hers and know that she was alive.

Though he said nothing, too weary to trust himself to speak, he did curl his fingers between hers as she brought his hand to her lips. He interlocked them together and returned her expressions of gratitude and affection with nonverbal expressions of his own -- namely squeezes to her hand.

The exhaustion writ upon his features, the dark bags beneath his eyes, the slump of his posture, the presence of his armor still on his person... These were all things that hinted an answer to her inquiry. But there was an even greater answer for her, to be found in his expression: a warm smile curling the corners of his lips upwards, and the lightest trace of gloss which covered those ocean-green eyes, both indicative of the emotions harbored within at the sight of her awake.

One of my biggest nitpicks in fiction concerns the feeding of babies. Mothers dying during/shortly after childbirth or the baby being separated form the mother shortly after birth is pretty common in fiction. It is/was also common enough in real life, which is why I think a lot of writers/readers don't think too hard about this. however. Historically, the only reason the vast majority of babies survived being separated from their mother was because there was at least one other woman around to breastfeed them. Before modern formula, yes, people did use other substitutes, but they were rarely, if ever, nutritionally sufficient.

Newborns can't eat adult food. They can't really survive on animal milk. If your story takes place in a world before/without formula, a baby separated from its mother is going to either be nursed by someone else, or starve.

It doesn't have to be a huge plot point, but idk at least don't explicitly describe the situation as excluding the possibility of a wetnurse. "The father or the great grandmother or the neighbor man or the older sibling took and raised the baby completely alone in a cave for a year." Nope. That baby is dead I'm sorry. "The baby was kidnapped shortly after birth by a wizard and hidden away in a secret tower" um quick question was the wizard lactating? "The mother refused to see or touch her child after birth so the baby was left to the care of the ailing grandfather" the grandfather who made the necessary arrangements with women in the neighborhood, right? right? OR THAT GREAT OFFENDER "A newborn baby was left on the doorstep and they brought it in and took care of it no issues" What Are You Going to Feed That Baby. Hello?

Like. It's not impossible, but arrangements are going to have to be made. There are some logistics.

We don't have formula here. what is the baby going to eat?

#i feel like tge fact im apprehensive about posting this is kinda proving my point #the way everyone talks about both weight gain and weight loss is just horrendous #like idek if i could fit all i wanna say in here especially while im at work but #i so badly wish people could be normal about weight gain and talking about it #its like if youre not in some constant state of wanting to lose weight people want to kill you #god forbid you want to put on weight to feel more comfortable in your body outside of muscles and a butt #fatphobia is a given thats a whole other few paragraphs #im grateful i have mutuals and friends who are normal but ill have or hear these convos and go #ok i feel sick. why do i feel this way why do you feel that way.#anyways i think fatphobia is one of the worst things to ever happen
