hmmmm you're right, that is a big question! since you asked "who" i'm going to assume you mean other artists?

for painting i'm particularly inspired by Anthony Cudahy, Alex Beck, Sterling Hundley, Ashley Wood (all contemporary,) Euan Uglow, Joaquin Sorolla, Sargent, Arkady Plastov, Ivan Shishkin, Konstantin Yuon, Ferenc Pinter, and a number of names in the Brandywine school like Mead Schaeffer and NC Wyeth.

i reformatted my brain a little in 2021 by reading Fujimoto's Chainsaw Man. Other mangaka are Hirohiko Araki, Kosuke Fujishima, Otomo, Inoue, Urasawa, Miura. the 2S artist Brandon Hoax is a HUGE inspiration to me. same for Chase Conley, Peter Chung, Freddy Carrasco, Xia Gordon, Ron Wimberly, Chris Kindred, Mel Tow, Hiro Isono, mozame_mo, Yoshitake Yamane, @maxbanshees @potogawaryuiki @coshkunz @cparrisartand @fourcorneredgod @newjackcole @choodraws @doctop @hirosemaryhello @nocturnalwalkr @fanficciera @oak-n @purenonsens @juangeedraws @plaest2k @blackblobyellowcone @turndecassette2 many more friends and strangers whose work i'm delighted to spend time traveling thru (and whose names i'll add in once i publish this enormous reply lol. rn i'm afraid of tumblr eating it!!)

most importantly, my partner Anka @kingfisher-cove charmed and captivated me from day one. the personality and dynamism of their work, specificity of place, time, body, personal effects, there's always been so much life in their art. i have little to no interest in stories/characters without limits, where mobility is never a concern, especially featuring the wealthy. stories where people don't sweat or pee or have "bad" teeth or talk too loud. Anka's always portrayed peeling paint and rusted metal as a fact of life. you get a sense of dimension/volume in their art— the way material hangs off a body, and that body's form, how gravity and weight conform feet to the ground— and the same goes for the personalities and ideas populating it. the viewer too has a home here beyond "representation." it's not just window-dressing, nor ponderous hyperrealism. there's cartoon whimsy and cartoon stakes. i wish i could describe the extent it's meaningful to me. i feel lucky to see it! plus i really making them yell and art is a good way of accomplishing it.

so because this is veering into WHAT inspires me...

other than like, transness and communism and everything that entails, i'm inspired heavily by pornography and leather culture, and (mostly vintage) magazines like Honcho and Juggs, 70s italian erotica/nunsploitation. relatedly, the lush scenes of Pierre et Gilles and Tarsem and Christian Riese Lassen. i'm also deeply inspired by hyperlink/multimedia art, such as that by Olia Lialina of @oneterabyteofkilobyteage or projects like Ted's Cave. places and delights of my childhood like Myst/Riven, Fin Fin, rural river water, rocky beaches, soft glowing glades, sharks in coral outcrops. autonomy and dissociation, too.

with a lot of the artists i mentioned, there is a handiness, a presence in their work, a dedication to indulgence and/or experimentation, in subject, setting, medium, whatever. an interest not feigned. i also love maximalist colour and texture... in drawings, in textiles, anything! worldwide and through history. i'm inspired by golden age illustration and Iranian turquoise and carpets. miniatures. iconography. lotuses. magnolia.

you can fake sincerity of course. when it comes to making art that seems like a waste of precious effort. when i get a sense that the artist really loves People beyond serving up a telephone game of vibe-mood-aesthetic... that is cool to me. if the art isn't well-lived, then it's well-cared for. a lot of the nostalgia fodder is based on a memory of a memory that was sold for mass market consumers, so i'm a bit distrusting of it. which isn't to say that i don't love a tone poem (i do-- Legend is one of my favourite films) nor that it requires "realism" to accomplish either. i love being sold on the ridiculous. i respond well to like, an artist (in whatever respect) showing me something absurd with 100% unbridled earnestness and fearlessness about being silly. my top 3 favourite series are JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Metal Gear Solid, and Ace Attorney. these are objectively as exaggerated in their drama as they are serious about their intent, and populated by straight freaks. one of my favourite directors is Michael Mann (Miami Vice, Manhunter, Heat, Thief, Collateral) who is known for his obsessive, even illustrative details but also, Audioslave plays during an emotional night drive. they don't let Audioslave play during an emotional night drive anymore. all these things are related lmao. let me go on a further tangent

there's an internal logic, right? and when it's flipped? that's the best. i don't mean a "twist," either. it's something else-- the author/artist revealing that, emotionally, things were always more complex than you were lead to believe, and it recontextualises the entire piece. if surprise is the best part of comedy then i think the same goes for melancholy. i love when the rug is pulled out from under me through something as simple as the reimagined N'doul episodes of the JJBA OVA. (YES! YES! I'LL TALK ABOUT IT FOREVER! I'M CRAZY! BUT I'M RIGHT!) is it a twist? nothing's actually changed about where the story is headed. you know where it's headed. but the meaning of that story has-- by creating an emotional trapdoor like that, it establishes a particular sense of suspense.

i'm mentioning these because i rewatched them recently-- films like Solaris and Sunshine and... you know what? Terminator are bigger to me than their subject matter because the emotional space they create is unnerving, where hope is fragile if it's present at all. something hard to accomplish... the bittersweet potency of ironic regret.

In the picturesque prefecture of Hyogo, two grandmothers, Mrs. L/N and Mrs. Kita were close friends on neighboring farms. They had shared countless memories together, and now, they were excitedly awaiting the arrival of their first grandchildren.

On a blissful summer afternoon, the sun beamed down from the azure sky, casting a warm and golden glow over the world below. The gentle breeze carried the scent of freshly cut grass, and the distant chirping of birds provided a delightful background symphony.

Mrs. L/N and Mrs. Kita settled on the swings, the sturdy ropes creaking on the wood softly as they rocked back and forth. The swings seemed to dance in the sunlight, casting playful shadows on the ground below. Their laughter echoed through the air as they pushed off the ground, swinging higher and higher with each stroke of their legs.

As fate would have it, Kita and Y/N were born just days apart, and their grandmothers couldn't have been happier. From their hospital beds, Mrs. Kita and Mrs. L/N exchanged joyful phone calls, sharing the exciting news of the arrival of their grandchildren.

As the years passed, the two grandmothers lived up to their prediction. Kita and Y/N grew up side by side, their grandmothers often arranging playdates for them.

“They're like two peas in a pod, aren't they?"

Mrs. L/N nodded, a knowing smile on her face. "Indeed, they are, Margaret. I believe they share a special bond that will last a lifetime."

The grandmothers exchanged a glance, and Mrs. Kita decided to broach the subject delicately. "You know, I can't help but wonder if maybe, just maybe, they'll grow up to be more than just friends."

Mrs. L/N's eyes widened with surprise, and a soft chuckle escaped her lips. "Oh, Yumie, are you thinking what I'm thinking?"

They both shared a laugh, realizing they were on the same page. With a twinkle in her eye, Mrs. Kita said, "Perhaps we should encourage their friendship, and who knows, one day, they might discover something more."

From the earliest years, they were inseparable, their laughter echoing through the streets as they explored the world together. During warm summer nights, they chased fireflies, their hearts brimming with dreams of thrilling adventures.

"So, have you heard from Kita lately?" Atsumu asked, casually.

Y/N's face lit up with a soft smile. "Yeah, we texted yesterday. He was telling me about his plans for the weekend."

Atsumu hesitated for a moment before speaking cautiously, "You know, there's something I heard from someone... I don't know if I should say it."

Curiosity tinged with worry sparked in Y/N's eyes. "What is it, Tsumu? You can tell me."

Taking a deep breath, Atsumu gently revealed, "I heard from Aran that Kita's going to announce got engaged last weekend."

Y/N's heart sank, her smile fading away. "Engagement? But he didn't mention anything to me..." Her voice trailed off, disappointment and hurt evident in her eyes.

Atsumu placed a comforting hand on Y/N's shoulder. "I'm sorry, Y/N. I didn't mean to upset you."

"No, it's okay," Y/N replied, trying to regain her composure. "I just... I always thought we were so close that we shared everything with each other."

Atsumu nodded empathetically. "I know, and maybe he just hasn't found the right moment to tell you yet."

But the seed of doubt had already been planted in Y/N's mind. She couldn't help but wonder why Kita hadn't shared this significant event in his life with her. Did he not trust her enough to confide in her? Or had he intentionally kept her in the dark?

Y/N sat on her favorite cozy spot on the couch, nervously tapping her phone on her thigh. Her heart raced with anticipation as she waited for that one text she had been hoping for all day.

The sun was slowly setting, casting a warm glow through the window and painting the room in hues of orange and gold. Y/N glanced at her phone every few seconds, checking for any new notifications. Finally, the familiar chime of a text message broke the silence.

Her heart skipped a beat as she unlocked her phone and read the message from Kita

Kita >"Hey Y/N, let's meet up for coffee."

As Kita and Y/N sat in the old coffee shop by the tranquil lake, the warm aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the comforting scent of aged wood filled the atmosphere.

“You know, Y/N," he said, breaking the comfortable silence, "I remember the first time we came here together. We were just kids, barely able to drink coffee."

Y/N chuckled, her eyes sparkling with nostalgia. "Yeah, I remember that day too. I ended up spilling so much coffee on the table but you helped me clean it up."

"It's what friends do, right?" Kita replied, smiling warmly at her.

"Right," Y/N said, her gaze turning thoughtful. "Kita, you've always been there for me, through thick and thin. I don't know what I would do without you."

Kita's heart swelled with affection, and he reached out to gently squeeze her hand. "And you've always been there for me, too, Y/N. You're like the missing piece in my life puzzle."

Y/N blushed, her cheeks turning a light shade of pink. "That's so cheesy, Kita."

"I mean it," he said, looking into her eyes. "You've been my rock, my confidante, my partner in crime. I feel like I can be myself completely when I'm with you."

"You can, Kita," Y/N assured him, her voice soft and reassuring. "You've always been yourself with me, and that's one of the things I love most about our friendship."

Kita's heart skipped a beat at her words, but he quickly brushed the thought aside, not wanting to ruin the moment by revealing his hidden feelings.

They continued talking, reminiscing about their countless adventures, sharing dreams and aspirations, and laughing at inside jokes that only they understood. The depth of their bond was evident in every word they exchanged, in the way they leaned on each other for support and found comfort in one another's presence.

"Life is going to change a lot soon," Y/N said, her voice tinged with a hint of sadness. "You're getting engaged." Kita’s eyes widened not realizing she had found out so soon.

"I wanted to explain," Kita began, his eyes filled with sincerity. "I know it must have hurt to find out about my engagement like that, and I'm truly sorry I didn't tell you sooner."

Y/N's defenses were still up, but she listened, her heart yearning for answers. "Why didn't you tell me, Kita? We've always been so honest with each other."

Kita sighed, running a hand through his hair. "I’m not sure, there were a lot of things on my mind with preparations and wedding planning, you understand right?"

Y/N felt a mix of emotions wash over her – hurt, understanding, and regret. "I wish you had trusted me enough and remembered to share this with me."

"I do. Things won't be the same, but I know we'll always have this, right here."

Y/N turned to him. "Right here," she echoed, her voice cracking with emotion.

A tear escaped Y/N's eye as she listened intently, realizing the weight of Kita's slurred confession. "Oh, Kita," she whispered, her own emotions starting to surface. "I never knew… I never realized…"

"It's alrigh'," Kita interrupted, offering a bittersweet smile. "I've moved on, and I'm genuinely happy for you if you find someone else. I jus' wanted you to know how much you mean to me."

Atsumu hugged his friend tightly, understanding the pain she was going through. "I know it's hard, Y/N, but sometimes we can't control how others feel or what they remember. All you can do now is find a way to heal and move forward."

The days turned into weeks, and Y/N did her best to keep her composure while the wedding preparations were in full swing. She attended bridal showers, smiled through fitting sessions, and participated in the joyous festivities. daemon roundup: wolves

i've been wanting to do a write-up on wolf daemon forms for a while now as i think they're a popular form and the phylogenetic distinction between the grey wolf and all of its subtypes is fascinating. species outside of the grey wolf are often considered nonviable due to their overlap with the grey wolf but also the difficulty researching their ecology. so here is going to be my deep dive on the wolf daemon persona overall, as well as what canis lupus subspecies (as well as peripheral species of the african wolf, eastern wolf, and red wolf) can be considered viable forms.

the wolf personality overall subspecies aside, all wolf daemon individuals are going to share some essential traits.

— loyal and cooperative. canis lupus forms, both the wild wolf and domestic dog, are notorious for their sense of community and hierarchy. wolves depend on the group for survival; social dynamics among the pack are incredibly complex, reinforcing tight-knit bonds and a democratic hierarchy among the family unit. wolves play, console each other, and develop unique pack culture through intergenerational communication. while sociability and extroversion varies between subspecies, all people with wolf daemons are going to naturally form or desire close friendships, and they are committed and generous to the ones they love.

— communicative and tactful. similar to above, wolf individuals are very honest and expressive. wolves have very advanced communication that include vocalizations, body language, and scent marking. this enables them to diffuse conflict and reinforce hierarchy, maintaining stability in the pack. while inter-pack aggression isn't rare, territories are defined through olfactory signaling and vocalizations. those with wolf daemons therefore prioritize clearly expressing themselves and their boundaries. they are socially intuitive and value group harmony; it is important for them to know where they stand and that tension is diffused as quickly as possible.

— dutiful and hardworking. wolf individuals are driven and reliable, committed to pulling their weight and motivated in their work ethic. wolf species are clever and cooperative hunters, chasing down much larger prey until their target is exhausted, then latching on and dragging their prey down with incredible resiliency. those with wolf daemons don't shy away from hard work, though they are also perceptive enough to observe obstacles from all angles and determine how to work smarter not harder. once they have initiated something, they often become absorbed in it and are driven to see it through.

— self-assured and resourceful. those with wolf daemons tend to be confident — or at least assured that they will be able to overcome what troubles them. wolves are typically apex predators of their biomes. they are assertive in maintaining hierarchy and defending territories; while tactful, as mentioned above, the wolf individual takes pride in themselves and aren't often self-doubting, particularly when they have group support. they adapt when change or hardship comes to them and are the type of person who is good at putting their head down and making do.

for these reasons, wolf personalities are often categorized as xxFJs. they are strong Fe users and i believe an argument could be made for either Si or Ni. they are also likely relatable to enneagram 6s and 2s as well as potentially 7s and 8s. however personality assignment is fairly subjective, so if you feel this fits you, don't shy away considering these forms.

The tone used here along with the visuals paint a really nice picture. Also, Yuno just sounds so pouty when annoyed.

I really like how she goes from,

"Wait do I have time off tomorrow to well that doesn't matter for now we're together and we'll stay together until morning."

It really shows off that understated feeling of infatuation throughout the song.

I like this line because it's not only addressing the audience but the people she knew before Milgram. Illustrating that she doesn't want someone to view her as bad for the things she chose to do. Yet also highlighting how she doesn't want an answer from the audience or this other person at all. She just wants her actions and feelings recognized but she doesn't want a good or bad label attached to them and I think that's neat.

"I messed up. I found out."

This line is done really well in the mv and the light airy laughter as it's sung is reminiscent to the scenes where we see Yuno blowing up the balloons.

I really just love the tone used when all of these lines are sung. This cover really shows off how full of love Yuno is for those she likes even if she gets cold sometimes. I really love the contrast between it and Umbilical.

I really love this line. It's so blase but speaks volumes about Yuno's mindset. Putting her dislike of labels on full display. As she questions again why is it so important for others to tell her how they feel about her actions, the choices she made.

Instead this time she's not telling the audience not to answer like she did in Umbilical she's reprimanding people for deciding things about her life and circumstances without even knowing her opinion on it. Following up on her statements about the audience creating a sob story for her within her voice drama. It's a really good line.

I like this line because it highlights how Yuno doesn't like people chasing an idea of her. How people create this idealized version of her in their heads and project it on her expecting her to take responsibility for the misconceptions they formed. But- Yuno has no intention of taking responsibility for what other people assumed about her or giving into their assumptions.

She only smiles when she wants to smile and frowns when she wants to frown. It doesn't matter how people perceive that or want her to respond to their kindness. To me this was her blatantly saying keep chasing this idea of me and I'll keep moving further away. Just like in a game of marco polo. The audience is shouting out all these ideas of who they believe her to be who they want her to be and she's moving further and further away regardless of which way it goes.

"Let’s just do it, please smile?"

I like this one because it can be taken as Yuno talking to herself. It also follows up on her first line in her second interrogation when she asks to hurry up and have the song extracted or whatever. In a way i interpreted this as Yuno going like she does in the portal timeline interaction with Amane,

Let's just shut up and be happy because things are going welll aren't they I still have more freedom than the others and I'm not being mentally degraded they're being nice trying to be empathetic. So I should be able to smile about this but it still feels bad just like before. I should just smile and get this over with just pretend to be grateful but I'm not- I'm annoyed and over this.

Vampire

"Going back and forth between the best and the worst the fruit of anxiety becoming sweet."

Really highlights Yuno's disdain for swinging between extremes of any kind. Displayed by her complaints regarding how the news sensationalizes things in her first voice drama.

"Even if I act tough, I can't go against my feelings."

Highlights that despite Yuno's cold and cool exterior that she's still a person who acts impulsively at times and can wind up subject to her own desires. Even if she recognizes there's no point in it.

"If we can connect and check maybe I can die."

Really enjoy how Sticky Bug highlights the pleasure of infatuation and Vampire highlights the disatisfaction of finding out the person you were infatuated with can't fulfill your needs. Like maybe if we just meet I can finally die or maybe if we just discuss it I can finally let this go. The depression one feels when you want to go further but the other person either can't or doesn't want to.

"It's fine. It's sad. It's painful. Until I eat all of you- It's okay. It's fun. It feels amazing. It's so addicting that I'll drown, screaming."

Shows off Yuno's habit of getting quiet and reserved when things aren't going well. Because she can't or won't be bothered to fix other's misconceptions about her even if the assertions being made are hurting her more. She'll just do the bare minimum and hope they can read the room. Sadly, most people can't and eventually that turns out badly.

There's something so deeply animalistic about a girl being nice to those around them not because they're having a good time but because they just want the interaction to end and people not taking that hint. Like I can feel that sort of animosity in everything Yuno does. That sort of I'm definitely not enjoying myself but you're going to keep talking anyway because that's how you all are you really don't care if I'm enjoying this or not. If I say what you think is true or not. None of it matters to any of you, you all just want to hear yourselves talk.

And all her songs capture that feeling in subtle and interesting ways.

My favorite mv moment/frame for both her trial mvs are-

I like that all the background characters in Yuno's first mv have faces showing off her habbit of people watching brought up in her first trial interrogation if I'm remembering correctly and her more personable nature.

I really like this because

Fu fu is a phrase used to indicate laughter.

It literally looks like she's saying F U to the audience.

Three it displays that she was blowing up this balloon herself or actively making the situation bigger than what it was. Until it burst.

I like how Mu's pupils get larger during this segment when she sees Rei. Like a cat seeing something they like very reminscent of this frame in Otome Dissection-

The panicked, shocked, downright anxiety ridden expression on Mu's face at this moment always gets to me it has such an impact.

It's Not My Fault

Or as I like to call it look at her trying to be cool with it. Look at her trying to convince herself what she did was actually okay and valid for two straight minutes to the point that she managed to convince everyone it was not.

She really believes it's not her fault guys this is the face of someone who fully fucking believes that.

She's super happy not in hysterics at all. Defintely not reckoning with the very tangible consequences of her actions in the middle of nowhere with barely any people around. Then immediately going this can't be happening and going actually wait what if I am the bad one here directly after this display just to go wait a second you said I'm right so I'm not right- I'm not the bad one here right? You said so all of you said so.

By that i mean anxiety presents in many ways and she and Futa both have it. If she was really confident in her choices she would not have had to hype herself up that much and self-depricate calling herself a drama queen and pitiful on the track. Like girl you don't need Milgram you need communications counseling and self-esteem therapy.

We cannot help you. God did in fact not give you everything you have the moral backbone of an eclair and the social understanding of someone who's befriended manipulators and users that never tell you you're wrong because they don't get anything out of you being right. Girl day one was bad and it's not getting any better. Someone free this girl she's in a state of perpetual torment that she's convinced herself is pleassure. Get better friends and parents.

Nobody that loves you would actually support you acting in a way so self-destructive and the fact that so many people saw you imploding and did nothing is legitimately sad. Then the one person who actually reprimanded you for your behavior you killed because you couldn't take that from them. Everything is wrong here. I'd say pack it up but spaceship shuttle hangers couldn't hold all this. Hell her song barely could.

Favorite voice drama line or moment-

Crying Bee

I like the fact that she canonically spends the first several minutes of her voice drama in tears at the idea of someone several years younger than her and much shorter bullying her. It really shows that she's a bit of an overreactor. Because honestly I think Mu could fold Es too. Like they're frail and short. If it wasn't for the barrier these prisoners would be playing catch with their body.

I also like how she responds to the idea of manual labor. It showcases just how prissy and sheltered she is. It's also really cute how quickly she stops being concerned after she sees Es talking to a rabbit. Like she just thought internally oh they're like that well I guess I don't have to worry too much.

Queen B

I really liked that she highlighted we do in fact have the choice to vote everyone innocent and we just aren't taking it. It speaks volumes because it's Yamanaka throwing the Milgram experiement in our face basically going you're doing exactly what the people in it before did whatever it took to continue the experiement with very little prompting. All he had to say is something bad will happen if we did that and the audience went oh no he's the writer a figure of authority we can't vote everyone innocent guys. Then he really went and wrote that it's such a funny thing to do.

I think Mu's social life before Milgram was rather bad. I don't think it's emotiionally healthy to be around people who only want something out of you or are afraid to disagree with you. Because it doesn't emotionally prepare people for rejection and can cause them to have very visceral reactions to it. She also has a hard time telling her friends iff their behavior is wrong because of it being too indulging even.

It's really not a healthy way to be but it does stop one from sticking out too much and can lead to them being well liked. I think during elementary school Mu may have been bullied a lot for not looking traditionally Japanese and those features became mor ecoveted as she grew up. It's common for overtly foreign looking kids to be treated differently and harrassed in Japan.

So, it was my belief that her reaction to bullying and her being a bully in general was in response to the harassment she faced prior and a way to make sure it didn't happen again. Her social interactions seem to have been incredibly warped.

My favorite voice drama/voiceline moments are when she points out that what's going on here is technically a crime but she won't judge us, when she says emotions and logic are two different things, and when she tells Es to get up in her second voice drama and calls them out for using we as well.

20. what do you think their social life was like before milgram?

I already answered this one~ So, I'll link it here and I'll add it here as well.

I think Amane was a rather unsocialized child. She seems to have been more used to communicating with adults than peers her own age. It's also stated that she was not allowed to amusement parks where she would have the opportunity to interact with children her own age. In Purge March we see her off on her own with a cat at an underpass used for dumping stuff.

Chances are she didn't have many friends her own age and that cat was the closest thing she had to one. We don't see much of her school life even though she's implied to be going to it. Just her walking to and back home from school. Considering she went to school bruised up like that and home with no issue it doesn't seem like most people were paying attention to her.

She also seems used to being ignored and sitting in silence reading on her own and perfectly fine with keeping it that way if in a particularly bad mood. She also only actively reaches out to other prisoners when she has a pretense to. Most of her timeline interactions with others being prompted by her need for help with studying.

Or even in the minigrams interacting with Mahiru and Yuno when she had bad bedhead. Beyond that she only discusses certain topics in depth. Such as her father who she talks about with great enthusiasm on multiple occassions. She seems to be a father's girl and used to keeping to herself. So, I imagine she only really opens up or shows her more childish side around people she trusts and have shown that it's okay to act that way around.

She's a very emotionally guarded person so she probably doesn't really let herself relax until she has reason to believe it's safe to. At least that's the impression she's given me. Once she does though she can be rather social and opinionated. She's definitely not one to back down just because someone older than her tells her she's wrong.

Like with Futa bringing up she hadn't ate her meat that one time or the birthday interaction she had with Yuno. She can be a very helpful and hopeful person for others to communicate with in Milgram because she reminds the other prisoners that they don't need to back down or bend to the circumstances they're in and I think a lot of the prisoners in Milgram appreciate that about her.

Yuno:Sorry for barging in when you’re getting into your worldview thing. But Mahiru-san’s finally managed to get to sleep. Humour me with some small talk while I take a break. By the way, Amane. Have you ever wished you were never born? I’ve thankfully lived a pretty fun life so far, so haven’t really. But you seem to be struggling with something. So, I kinda wondered if you thought like that.

Amane:……I don’t think that. Being born into this world is the first miracle any person experiences, and is something to celebrate. Even if after birth I was put through trial after trial, the value of that will never disappear.

Yuno:Hmm. Ok. ……happy birthday, then. It’s good that you were brought into the world, I guess.

Amane constantly reminds the people she knows that they are not their circumstances. That they are in fact still themselves regardless of what anyone says about them or the choices they make and that if they still believe in and have faith in those choices, they should stick to them. So even though I don't think she communicates often when she does, I'm pretty sure it helps a lot of the people she communicates with.

So, before in within Milgram i think her social life was limited but very fulfilling regardless.

Hello! I'm curious if you could expand on how you run a 3-2-1 combat system in your 1:1 game? I've been on-and-off playing 1:1 with my partner and combat is always clunky, crunchy, and strange, no matter what we try and rip off or scale. Thank you so much. Love everything you are sharing about Heretic!!!

Yeah lemme talk about Heretic’s combat system, because we’ve really tested it out now and it’s been super fun for both 1:1 combat and for group fights.

So "3-2-1 combat" refers to the length of a fight: combat is always resolved in 3 rounds. After the 3rd round, we narrate the outcome, which could launch us into a chase sequence if the other guy tries to get away, or maybe one side surrenders, or one side is too injured or depleted to continue, etc, etc. Three rounds, you’re done. Fight’s over. So every action you take needs to be super tactical, and one good (or bad) roll can change the outcome of the entire combat.

Because it’s a 1:1 game, Emily controls her character, plus her ‘party’ (up to 3 NPC allies at a time). I control everyone else. And it was so important to me to keep rolling fast-paced. So every character’s entire turn is determined with 1 roll. That one roll decides if you successfully attack, how much damage your attack does, if you get to use magic this round, how successful your magic is if you pull it off, if you gain any levels of dodge, & if you get to pull off any combat maneuvers, like binding your opponent’s weapon, taking damage for an ally, changing your combat stance, etc, etc.

You also get:

- A Yield. Once per combat, you may, on being successfully attacked, declare that the enemy misses instead, because you fell back. If you yield, you cannot attack this round, as you must spend the time making up your lost ground and rejoining the fight. You can still maneuver and dodge, however.

- Armor. You can have up to 5 dots in armor. One dot is light leather, and allows you to, once per combat, ignore 1 level of bashing or piercing damage. Five dots is full plate, and allows you to, twice per combat, ignore 2 levels of damage from pretty much any source: but comes with a bunch of drawbacks to things like movement and stealth.

- if that character has at least 2 dots in any Lore, a combat stance. Most combat stances provide lore-specific combat bonuses or abilities that can only be used once per fight. If the character has 2 dots in multiple Lores, it may behoove them to use a rolled maneuver success to change stances during the fight, in order to use multiple stance advantages.

Since we’re using 3-2-1 combat, there’s a ‘smoke’em if you’ve got’em’ attitude towards your yields, armor charges, dodge levels (if you’re in mano e mano with an opponent or if you’ve successfully picked up some dodge during your rolls), and Lore abilities. There’s no ‘saving the potion for when you really need it.’ Use them all, every single fight! You’ll get them all back at the start of the next fight.

There are also special rules for going mano e mano with an opponent (fixating on them to gain an advantage against them, but your tunnel vision makes you more vulnerable to other things on the battlefield) or for taking cover (where you can only use ranged attacks, but all attacks against you fire at -1 level of success).

There is no in-combat healing. Healing is precious and limited, and only happens after combat is over.

So how does rolling work?

In Heretic, you are trying to roll pairs on d10s. If you get a pair, you succeed at what you’re trying to do. If you roll a pair of 9s, you are significantly more successful than if you roll a pair of 2s. The ‘height’ of the pair determines your degree of success. In combat, that looks like:

Rolling a pair of 1-3s: inflict 1 lvl of damage

Rolling a pair of 4-6s: inflict 2 lvls of damage

Rolling a pair of 7-9s: inflict 3 lvls of damage

Rolling a pair of 10s: inflict 4 lvls of damage

What if you roll more than one pair?

That’s when it gets fun! Your highest pair goes to your attack, and any additional pairs give you extra actions. In combat, these are your “versatile actions.”

On a pair of 1-3s: Gain a level of dodge.

On a pair of 4-7: You get to execute a Maneuver. Those are things like changing stance, forcing your opponent out of cover, gaining a lvl of damage on your next attack, sweeping, lunging, binding, etc. There are 10 maneuvers in total. Beat is an especially useful one as it forces your opponent to immediately use his Yield in response to your attack.

On an 8-10: Cast magic, if you have at least 1 dot in any lore. Magic can be rolled as a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd degree success, depending on if you rolled a pair of 8s, 9s, or 10s.

What if you roll three of a kind?

You can split the roll into 2 pairs at one height lower than the rolled success (so, you can turn three 6s into two pairs of 5s) or you can raise the level of your success by 1 (so you can turn three 9s into a pair of 10s).

Okay, so what does this look like?

So, Bastian (Emily’s PC) and his squire Volo (an NPC who is under Emily’s control during combat) are going to fight A Cultist Wizard and the Wizard’s Wolf Familiar (both controlled by me). Initiative order is determined by each character’s Speed + their Alertness. In this combat, the order will be:

1 - The Wolf

2 - Volo

3 - Bastian

4 - The Cultist

Round 1

The Wolf’s turn:

I roll the wolf’s attack stat, which is its Fitness + Brawl. That gives me 7 dice, on which I roll a pair of 6s and a pair of 2s. The wolf attacks Bastian: with a pair of 6s, it deals 2 levels of damage. Bastian, a lord, has 4 dots in armor: twice per combat, he can ignore 1 lvl of damage from most sources, so he declares that he only takes 1 level of damage and his armor soaks the rest.

The wolf also finds advantageous ground, gaining a level of dodge.

Volo’s turn:

Volo’s Fitness + Swords is 6, so he has 6 die to roll for his attack. He rolls a pair of 4s. Emily declares that he is attacking the wolf, to draw its attention away from Bastian! Wolves (obviously) have no armor, but the wolf did get a level of dodge just now, so it can ignore 1 of the two levels of damage Volo has just dealt out, by dancing nimbly out of the way.

Bastian’s turn:

Bastian also has an attack stat of 7. He rolls 2 pairs of 5s! That means he gets access to a Maneuver. Emily decides that she wants to force the Cultist to waste his yield on a fairly lackluster attack, so she declares that Bastian is using Beat. The damage dealt with the pair of 5s is now irrelevant, as the Cultist stumbles back from his blade: but the Yield is now no longer in play.

The Cultist’s turn:

The Cultist was forced to Yield this turn, so he can’t attack, but he still gets to roll his Fitness + Knives (8 dice) to see how well he capitalizes on the situation on the battlefield. He gets a pair of 7s and a pair of 4s. I decide that, since he uses short weapons, I’ll use the pair of 7s to execute a Corps-a-Corps Maneuver against Bastian, and the Cultist bodies Bastian to the ground. Bastian will need to spend a success of 7 or greater to throw the Cultist off of him, and neither of them can attack with any weapon longer than a knife until that happens. Now, Bastian has a knife, secreted about his person: but he only has an attack stat of 6 in knives, so it’s to his advantage to get this asshole off of him. Meanwhile, my Cultist will take 1 lvl of damage every round until the Corps-a-Corps is broken: but I use my pair of 4s to instantly grant myself a lvl of dodge (you can always downgrade a rolled success to a lesser degree of success if you don’t actually want to cast or use a maneuver), saying that he expertly ducks Bastian’s first blow as he tackles him to the ground.

Recap: Bastian has used 1 armor charge and lost 1 lvl of health. The wolf has lost 1 lvl of health. The Cultist has lost his Yield.

Round 2.

The Wolf’s turn:

Its attention successfully drawn by Volo, it lunges for the squire. Two pairs of 2s, boo. That’s only 1 lvl of damage for the attack, & Volo has 3 dots in armor, so he just ignores it. The other pair of 2s gives the wolf a level of dodge.

Volo’s turn:

His master is in danger! After shrugging off the wolf’s attack, Volo turns his attention to the Cultist. He gets a pair of 8s and a pair of 5s, and Emily declares the Maneuver to be Protect, which means he will take 1 lvl of damage on Bastian’s behalf this combat. The pair of 8s means he deals 3 lvls of damage to the Cultist - who uses one of his 2 armor charges to turn that into 2 lvls of damage. Still, the Cultist is bloodied.

Bastian’s turn:

Bastian is forced to use his Fitness+Knives this round, instead of his better Fitness+Swords skill, so he only has 6 dice to roll. Still, he gets the pair of 7s he needs to throw the Cultist off of him, plus an additional pair of 1s. However, on reflection, Emily decides she’s fine with Bastian using his pair of 7s to attack with his knives: this would have been a much more serious disadvantage if Bastian hadn’t had that knife hidden in his boot. So she ignores the Corps-a-Corps and inflicts 3 lvls of damage instead, which the Cultist’s 2nd of 2 armor charges turns into 2 lvls of damage instead. The Cultist will take another level of damage just from being in Corps-A-Corps at the end of the round, which should knock him out of the fight. Bastian also gets a level of dodge from the pair of 1s.

The Cultist’s turn:

The Cultist also knows he’s fucked up, but he’s not going down without a fight. He rolls two pairs of 8s. That’s bad, because the Cultist knows magic. The pair of 8s grants him 3 lvls of damage against Bastian, and Bastian can’t Yield since he’s currently being pinned by the Corps-a-Corps. However, Bastian does have a level of dodge this round, and Volo’s Protect: so that turns into 1 lvl of damage, which Emily decides to use her second armor charge to ignore as well. The Cultist’s savage attack goes off of Bastian’s defenses, leaving him none the worse for wear. The bigger problem is that this is a Lamp Cultist, and the Lamp combat cast is Frenzy. The Cultist gets a 1st level casting success on Bastian to force him to Frenzy and use his next attack on the closest target: and with Volo standing over him, Volo is his nearest target.

Then Bastian’s elbow catches him in the face (that Corps-a-Corps tick damage is brutal), and the Cultist is knocked out cold.

Recap: Bastian has lost 1 lvl of health, has used both of his armor charges, and is Frenzied. The Wolf has lost 1 lvl of health. The Cultist is out of the fight. Volo has used 1 charge of his armor.

Round 3: the Final Round.

The Wolf’s turn:

The Wolf leaps for Bastian, who it’s just seen fell its master! It rolls a pair of 10s, a pair of 5s, and a pair of 1s. I figure the Wolf is enraged, so I declare the maneuver to be Lunge: this adds 1 lvl of damage to its attack this round, but it can’t use any dodges or its Yield this round. That would be a whopping five lvls of damage to Bastian if it landed, and would knock him straight out of the fight, but Emily immediately declares that she is going to use her Yield. I think about it for a second: can a Frenzied character Yield? I decide to let her roll Bastian’s Charisma+Occult to see if he can overcome the Cultist’s magic in a moment of mortal peril, and tell her that she will need to roll at least as high a success as the Cutlist rolled in casting the magic in the first place (so she needs a pair of 8s or better). Charisma+Occult is...not Bastian’s best stat. He fails. The Wolf’s attack lands. Bastian is knocked down cold as the wolf finds a weak point in his armor and tears open his leg.

Volo’s turn:

Volo rolls a pair of 9s and nothing else, but since the Wolf Lunged this round, it can’t do anything to mitigate the damage. Volo deals 3 levels of damage to the wolf.

Combat is over! Assessment: The Cultist and Bastian are both out of the fight, and while Bastian is hurt worse, of the two actual remaining combatants, Volo is totally unharmed and the Wolf is grievously wounded. I declare that the Wolf slinks into the corner, snarling and shivering in terror, crouched pathetically over its bleeding master, surrendering the ground to triumphant Volo.

With combat being over, everyone regains 1 lvl of health. Volo passes a successful Intelligence+Medicine check, and administers first aid to Bastian, which gives him another level of health back and restores him to consciousness. Bastian, as student of Frost Lore, can now attempt to heal himself: which he does successfully, gaining a third level of health back and taking him to -3. He is badly hurt, but on his feet: he’ll need to rest for a few days to heal any further. Now they can decide what they’re going to do about the defeated Cultist and the cowed and injured Wolf.

I think the eternal child sx7 energy doesn't fit here, actually. 7's don't dwell on their emotions, they chase distractions away from them. They're militant optimists, spinning new dreams to avoid pain. They're the Eleventh Doctor. Peter Pan. Not... Roxanne, wanting the deepest, most emotion-filled (all of them but ESPECIALLY yearning, which is the low side of 4) romantic love. 7s say "no thanks, I'm having another adventure) to that.

And to answer your question, yes, Marianne is like that. She contains the sweet idealism of the 4 as well as its extreme tendency toward romanticism - every step of her relationship with Willoughby is her being entranced with the romance of their relationship, not the sense, which is he's an irresponsible man who has made some whopping mistakes, and breaks her heart. Marianne learns the painful 4 lesson - an image is essentially a construct, a distraction from real connection. Roxanne learns this, too - the man she has projected as the ideal romantic lover is a sham, and the man who truly loved her was there all along. It is a cowing moment for a 4 - that people deserve better than to be treated as vessels for your pain and ramped-up emotions, and to not BELIEVE in those emotions as ultimate truth, as alive as they make you feel.

I also find it amusing Cyrano reminds you of Bright Star - an intensely 4 movie if there ever was one.

I get your ambivalence about this. The image types are hard and 4 is one of the most wildly mistyped enneatypes out there. But it has its lessons, patterns, strengths and stories, same as all the rest.

Also re: withdrawn and assertive, I find the triads are a help to more closely understand a type, but unhelpful when trying to type in the first place. Average 4s do indeed withdraw to maintain their identity as different, but not always and without the correct story beats its very hard to see. I'm not familiar enough with Cyrano to signal when or if this happens with Roxanne.

Good argument, thanks. I'll change her Enneagram . She does remind me of Marianne now I think about it. I can be too quick sometimes to assume a character isn't a 4, because there are so many 9s or 2s or 6s out there who get called 4s -- and that means I may not consider it as deeply as I should. That's on me, and something I need to fix.

I never know whether to be envious of a fictional 4's capacity for romanticized idealism and melodrama or to just sigh and shake my head. I have had so many friends with 4ish traits (not to mention seen so many movies and read so many books with 4ish heroines in them growing up) that I feel emotionally muted by comparison. It's hard for me to wrap my head around them since I see their intense emotional reaction from a 6w7 perspective of "what's the big deal?" I can't dwell in things as long as they can without moving on quickly, and when I do get stuck in an emotional headspace, it's painful to me. There is a wall between me and my feelings and a tendency to rationalize them away and get back to living. I wish the world would stop when I lose the people I love, but it doesn't. And that pains me.

The two of them really pushed through and worked hard to get this program out, but honestly did a really good job keeping their heads on their shoulders to skate as clean as they could.

Ok now that I've finished Yakuza 5 I gotta say I think it's probably my favourite game out of the series so far, obviously excluding 0. That finale chapter was just so well paced.

Back At The Start (Beelzebub x GN!Reader) Fluff

Part One Word Count : 1.4k

The second hand on the clock ticked away as the two of you sat in silence, your eyes still darting between the images that you held in your shaky hands and back up to the face of the man in front of you. He wasn’t wearing the same smile that he wore in the pictures, but neither were you. It was confusing, it seemed unreal, everything that you were seeing… It couldn’t have possibly happened, right? There was no way, no possible way that it could be real… But you were looking at it, you were looking at these pictures, seeing yourself in them, and you could tell that Beel was hoping that you’d feel something, that these pictures would spark some kind of memories in your mind… But they didn’t. You were just as confused now as you had been when he had called out your name that first time. How did he know you? “That’s… That’s you… Don’t you remember?” He grabbed one of the pictures from between your fingers, an image of he and you lying in bed, your hands reached out to try to grab the camera from him, an attempt to keep him from taking the picture, but his arms were so long that you couldn’t reach. Your smile was wide, you both had been laughing as he snapped the picture, it was a moment that he remembers all the time, a memory that never fails to bring a smile to his face. “I love you, Y/N… I never stopped loving you…” You took a shaky breath, carefully placing the pictures back into the box as you stood up from the couch, shaking your head. “I’m sorry… It’s… I don’t remember… This is a lot right now… I need to go…”

Sitting in your own room, in your own home, a home that was so familiar, but so foreign at the same time. It was yours, but you didn’t feel like you belonged there… not the way you felt whenever you visited Beel. It was a feeling that you never understood, not until you saw the pictures, they had to be the reason. You had been here before… but you couldn’t remember. Why couldn’t you remember?

You fell back onto your pillows, running your hands over your face as you tried, you tried to remember. You wanted to feel that happiness, you wanted to feel the way you felt in those pictures, you wanted to look the way you did then. A smile spread across your face in each of them, your arms wrapped around Beel as you looked up at him with eyes filled with nothing but love. You could see that you loved him, and he loved you just as much. What had happened? You couldn’t remember anything from before you arrived in the Devildom. There were things that you had been drawn to, places that you had felt some kind of strange connection to. You hadn’t felt that connection with Beel though, and that didn’t make sense. Nothing made sense… You groaned loudly, pulling your blankets up over your head as you tried to fall asleep, squeezing your eyes shut, trying to force sleep to overcome you. Scenes filled your mind, like a movie playing on an old time projector. The edges were faded, and it looked hazy, there was no sound, but you could just make out what was going on. Beel’s arms wrapped around you as he swayed you side to side, his chin resting on top of your head before you turned to smile up at him. Before the scene could continue it changed, showing you what looked like Beel in the gym, the gym that you worked at, where you spent most of your time with him. You were standing right above him, leaning in to kiss him every time he did a bench press. You both looked so… happy. These were the things he wanted you to remember, these were the things you needed to remember. You sat up in your bed, a small smile forming on your lips as more memories came rushing through your mind, not of just you and Beel though. Memories of all the others in the house, the demons that you had forgotten about, but you knew all of them. You loved all of them, but none more than Beel. You were in love with him, and as the memories ingrained themselves in your brain, your entire body started to feel warm, your heart speeding up as you pushed yourself out of your bed. You remembered…

He hadn’t moved from the couch. He didn’t know if he wanted to cry or scream, or maybe both. Had he not been through enough, had he not suffered enough? The pictures had done nothing to help, they had confused you, chased you away… there was nothing else he could do. He had done everything he could, he would never get you to remember. He dropped his face into his hands as the tears began to fall, his breaths shaky as he tried to mentally tell himself to let you go. There was no use in holding onto you any longer, it would only cause him more pain, and it would push you further away. If he couldn’t have you the way he once did, he could at least still be your friend, and that would suffice. The pictures were neatly stacked and placed back into the box where they would stay forever, a box full of memories that only he had, memories that were too painful to look back on. They would stay in the box underneath his bed, the lid would grow dusty as years passed, and maybe by some chance, maybe you’d fall back in love with him. You’d learn to love him again and a new box would be made, filled with memories that would never have to end. He’d never have to lose you again. Just as he was getting up, the box tucked carefully under his arm, the front door was pushed open. You stood there, your eyes wide and a smile spread across your lips, a smile that looked so familiar to him, the way you used to look at him… It couldn’t be what he wished it was though. He wouldn’t let himself believe it, he wouldn’t let himself think that way, it would only hurt him. Your chest was rising and falling quickly as you tried to catch your breath, but the smile never faded. “I… I remember…” You said it breathlessly, and for a second he thought he was dreaming. Maybe he had fallen asleep on the couch and Belphie had found him there… Maybe his brother was trying to cheer him up by giving him this kind of dream. Would it be fair though if that were the case? He’d have to wake up at some point, and when he did, he’d be right back where he left off… without you. “Beel…” You walked closer to him, reaching up to cup his face in your hands the way you always did. Could dreams feel this real? Was Belphie able to do that? He wasn’t sure… But it seemed so real. He hadn’t remembered actually falling asleep on the couch, maybe… maybe this was really happening. “You remember? What do you… What do you remember?” He was scared, he was scared to touch you, scared to hold you. He was scared that you’d run away again. He needed to know what you remembered, he needed to know that he had you back completely before he let himself get happy. “Everything… I remember you… I remember us… And I know that I love you. I know I do… I could see it, and I can feel it… I love you Beelzebub.” You smiled shyly up at him, just as you did the first time you had ever said it to him. His eyes glossed over with fresh tears, tears of relief, tears of joy that you were here, that you were back… The box was dropped onto the couch as his arms wrapped around you, holding you close against him as he peppered kisses across the top of your head. You were his again, and he’d never let you go. You would stay with him forever, the way you had promised, and you would be his forever, just as he had promised.
