Telepathy for Virgins (I Can Totally Read Your Mind, Bro)
Seokjin/Hoseok (BTS) 37k | E | Complete
Tags: Cherry Magic AU, Telepathy, 30-Year-Old Virgins, Friends to Lovers, Rom Com, AU
Summary: Urban legend says 30-year-old virgins get the ability to read minds. On the night of his 30th birthday party, Seokjin is stunned to discover the legend is true, but not more stunned than by what his best friend Hoseok is thinking about him. A Cherry Magic AU.

"Ugh, will you please stop asking me about my dating life, Namjoon? You sound like my parents."
Seokjin takes another sip of his rosé—a gulp, actually, if he's being honest—and rolls his eyes heavenward. He can't believe he's being interrogated during what is supposed to be a celebration of him, Kim Seokjin, successful lawyer (read: law firm peon) and dazzling Seoul beauty, on his 30th birthday.
Yet, he must weather these blows—and from his own two best friends, no less.
He sighs dramatically, gesturing outward with his wine glass. "They can't wait to get a baby out of me."
Hoseok giggles beside him. The couch is tiny, a two-seater in name only that Hoseok managed to squeeze into his pocket-sized one-bedroom apartment. It's the most he can afford in a less fashionable area of Seoul on the income he takes in from his dance troupe.
The red flush to his cheeks reveals he's already tipsy even though he can't have had more than a few sips, and there's the tiniest bit of birthday cake on his cheek. His graceful dancer arms are now uncoordinated and floppy as he makes a kissy face and offers air pinches. "Your babies would be so cuuute."
Seokjin swiftly wipes away the cake on Hoseok's face.
"Excuse me, but please, Seok-ah, that was rhetorical. Never refer to me in the same sentence as babies again. Another wrinkle literally just appeared on my face." Seokjin pats his upper lip in concern, and honestly, he really might have sprouted one there.
The playlist on Hoseok's phone switches to a mournful vibe. Fitting.
"I'm sorry, hyung," Namjoon says soberly across from them. He shifts forward on one of Hoseok's dining table chairs and leans his forearms on his thighs. Seokjin is treated to one of his infuriating smart-lawyer-who-understands-your-troubles looks. It's even more preposterous with the cone-shaped birthday hat he's wearing, the elastic barely stretching around his large head. "Not wanting a relationship is a valid life choice. I didn't mean to pressure you otherwise just to appease my own curiosity. That was insensitive."
Seokjin throws his hands up in the air, nearly sloshing some of the wine out of his glass and onto Hoseok. He's probably rapidly catching up to him in the drunk department. At first he'd been happy Namjoon was able to make the trip to Seoul for his birthday, but he's starting to change his mind. "Oh god, why did I invite either of you over here."
"You didn't?" Hoseok hiccups. "This is my place."
"Whatever. I don't see how that contradicts my argument," Seokjin says. He crosses one leg over the other. "I shall find a man when I am ready," he declares. "However, at this time I am busy with work. And more importantly, no man is good enough for me." He nods definitively as he leans back against the couch and closer to Hoseok, so their arms are pressed together.
"It's true. That's basically my entire problem, isn't it?" Hoseok asks.
Seokjin is a little surprised that Hoseok is taking Seokjin's explanation at face value, and more than that, he's reassuring himself in apparent seriousness (is Hoseok on some kind of "love yourself" campaign??), but mostly it's weird because Hoseok has no right to complain about nabbing men when there's a new piece of ass in his bed every other week.
However, upon closer reflection, Hoseok hasn't really dated anyone seriously in well...ever.
There are flings and hookups, raunchy dancing at the clubs and flirting at bars, but everyone who has graced Hoseok's sheets has disappeared almost as soon as they slid in.
Seokjin can't do that. The casual thing. He wishes he could. He wants to, if only to ease the crushing loneliness and yeah, maybe take the edge off sometimes.
And technically, it's not that he can't do that. Men are constantly throwing themselves at Seokjin. Not just men, either. Everyone.
Because Seokjin is gorgeous. He knows that, objectively.
Still, he doesn't quite get it when he looks in the mirror. Sure, his features are proportional but so what? Proportional features don't make him a great human being.
Nevertheless, somehow proportional features are enough to make people agree with everything he says, no matter how ridiculous, and inspire people to knock each other out of the way in their haste to flirt with him, and motivate people to buy him unwanted gifts in an effort to woo him.
The real problem is that Seokjin dislikes everyone.
Not just individuals, but people in general. There's a term for that. Misanthrope. People are bad in the general sense, and they're often bad specifically. His cynicism is part of what makes him such a good lawyer.
It's also what has made him suck so tremendously at romance. It only takes two or three minutes of conversation for someone to become utterly distasteful to him, and once that happens, well, a heavy make-out session instantly loses its appeal.
The only two people Seokjin has ever been able to tolerate —and not coincidentally, the only people attending his sad little 30th birthday party—are his best friends Hoseok and Namjoon.
They'd gotten to know each other in university when they all studied law, and even though Hoseok could not endure even one more law class or he would die, hyung and fled into performance studies instead, the three of them remained close.
Seokjin can't possibly date Namjoon, because for one thing, after grad school Namjoon immediately moved back to his remote hometown in order to "offer my legal services at reduced rates to people who couldn't otherwise afford legal help," and for another thing—ew.
As for Hoseok, sure, he's pretty, with his glinting brown eyes and his angular face and his lovely pink flush; and sure, he's charming, with his vibrant enthusiasm that masks a secret shyness, and sure, he's the kindest, most generous person Seokjin has ever met or whatever, but the thing is, Hoseok is one of his only two friends, and his only remaining friend in Seoul, and possibly the only acceptable human being on the planet, so no. Dating him is not an option. Seokjin would never endanger their relationship like that, even if he did have feelings for him.
Which he doesn't.
So, yeah, that explains why Seokjin, at 30 years old, is still a virgin.
"Is this boring?" Seokjin asks suddenly. They've been sitting around Hoseok's place for three hours, which has suited Seokjin's avoidant personality just fine, but it probably doesn't qualify as a party. "Are you bored?"
"How could I be bored when I'm near you?" Hoseok asks, their shoulders rubbing together in a way that Seokjin forces himself to ignore.
Seokjin has to laugh. Hoseok is cute. When he's drunk, he does have a tendency to get sentimental. His tone doesn't sound the slightest bit teasing, just 100% sincerity. Seokjin makes kissy faces and sends them towards Hoseok with the flat of his hands as his appropriate reward. "Aw, Seok-ah, you're so sweet."
Hoseok screws up his face in confusion. "Why? Why am I sweet?"
Namjoon laughs. "You just are, hyung."
Hoseok rolls his eyes. "Ugh, not you, too. But yeah! We could go out for sure if you'd rather do that, hyung. It's your party. A seminal moment! Turning 30!"
"That's right! It's a big day! We should get wild!" Seokjin jumps to his feet and pumps his fist in the air. He definitely does not want to "get wild." Still. His friends are going to have a terrible time if he forces them to stay here mulling over the myriad failures of Seokjin's life. And he'll at least escape the questioning. He reaches down and grabs Hoseok's free hand, giving him a slight tug. "I'm 30 now! I'm sexy!"
"Aish, come on, you were always sexy," Hoseok interjects as he lets Seokjin pull him to his feet.
And...it's weird for Hoseok to call him sexy, especially...in that tone. Hoseok is always ready with a reassuring remark, but not like that. Namjoon is watching them with an assessing frown, like he's mentally embarking on one of those irritating investigations into Seokjin's mental health, and Seokjin has to say something to deflect how uncomfortable he suddenly is. Now.
"What is this, Hoseok-ah! Are you my self-appointed self-esteem champion tonight or something? My hype man? Is this because it's my birthday or is it because you're wasted? If you're wasted, I should probably send you to bed instead of dragging you out."
Hoseok looks at him in confusion, eyes wide, as he strokes his hand. Their faces are mere centimeters apart. "What is he talking about? Is he drunk?"
Seokjin is about to tease him even more when his brain slows down and two things catch up to him:
1. He heard Hoseok speak as clear as a bell. 2. Hoseok's mouth didn't open at all.
