sometimes one particle of my body asks “what if james mcavoy reprises his role as charles” and then I remember disney would never hire someone who said “it is a little bit of a mini-tragedy that him [charles] and magneto don't, you know, have sex and become married and become best friends." nor would I want the co captain of cherik to work under those circumstances (gun to head when he’s about to wax poetically in an interview about how important the magneto & prof x relationship is)

Raquel Welch, who has died aged 82, had only three lines as Loana in the 1966 film fantasy One Million Years BC but attained sex-symbol status from the role, in which she was dressed in a fur-lined bikini. The image made its imprint in popular culture and the publicity poster sold millions. The feminist critic Camille Paglia described the American actor’s depiction as “a lioness – fierce, passionate and dangerously physical”.
The tale of cavepeople coexisting with dinosaurs was Welch’s breakthrough film – and the beginning of a largely unsuccessful battle she waged to be taken seriously as an actor. When she arrived on set, she told the director, Don Chaffey, she had been thinking about her scene. She recalled his response as: “Thinking? What do you mean you’ve been thinking? Just run from this rock to that rock – that’s all we need from you.”
Ursula Andress, who had emerged from the sea in another famous bikini for the 1962 James Bond film Dr No, had turned down the role of Loana. It went to Welch, on contract to 20th Century Fox, when the American studio agreed to hire her out to the British company Hammer Films.
Welch had to contend with critics who believed her looks to count for more than any acting ability she possessed. It was true that the film was pure kitsch and noteworthy only for Ray Harryhausen’s remarkable special effects with stop-motion animation creatures – and for making Welch a star.
Nevertheless, Welch later showed her aptitude for comedy when she played Constance, the French queen’s married seamstress in love with Michael York’s D’Artagnan, in the 1973 swashbuckler The Three Musketeers, directed by Richard Lester. The performance won her a Golden Globe best actress award and she reprised the part in The Four Musketeers: Milady’s Revenge (1974).
She increasingly took roles on television and worked up an act as a nightclub singer that she took across the US. She showed her performing mettle when she made her Broadway stage debut, taking over from Lauren Bacall in the musical Woman of the Year at the Palace theatre (1981-83). In an updating of the Katharine Hepburn-Spencer Tracy 1942 movie of the same title, she gave a show-stopping performance as the TV news personality Tess Harding.
“When she makes her first appearance in a low-cut gold lamé gown, her attributes can be seen all the way to the mezzanine,” wrote the New York Times critic Mel Gussow, unable to ignore what Welch brought to the stage visually. “It would be inaccurate to say that Miss Welch is a better actress than Miss Bacall, but certainly at this stage of her career she is a more animated musical personality.”
Around that time, Welch said: “I have exploited being a sex symbol and I have been exploited as one. I wasn’t unhappy with the sex goddess label. I was unhappy with the way some people tried to diminish, demean and trivialise anything I did professionally. But I didn’t feel that from the public.”
She was born Jo-Raquel Tejada in Chicago, Illinois, the first of three children, to Josephine (nee Hall) and Armando Tejada. Her father, an aeronautical engineer, was Bolivian. When Raquel was two, the family moved to San Diego, California, and, five years later, she joined the city’s junior theatre, attached to the city’s Old Globe, as well as starting ballet classes.
She said her father was volatile and terrifying, and she never saw any tenderness between her parents. One escape from this unsettled childhood came through putting on plays in the garage for friends and neighbours, using bedspreads for curtains.
On leaving La Jolla high school, San Diego, in 1958, she won a scholarship to study theatre arts at San Diego state college, but dropped out after a year to marry James Welch and became a weather presenter on KFMB, a San Diego television station.
After giving birth to two children, Damon and Tahnee, she left her husband, intending to follow her acting ambitions in New York. In the event, she worked as a model and cocktail waiter in Dallas, Texas, before moving to Los Angeles.
She was screen-tested by the producer Cubby Broccoli, who had seen her in a Life magazine photo-spread, for a part in the 1965 Bond film Thunderball, and signed up by 20th Century Fox. But a technicality involving start dates and contract options ruled out the Bond film and she was cast in Fantastic Voyage (1966), a big-budget sci-fi submarine saga, clad in a wetsuit.
After One Million Years BC, Welch – again in a bikini – played Lilian Lust, one of the Seven Deadly Sins, alongside Peter Cook and Dudley Moore in Bedazzled (1967), a comedy irreverently resetting the Faust legend in 1960s swinging London.
Burt Reynolds and Jim Brown were the stars when she brandished a shotgun in the 1969 western 100 Rifles – another action role. But Welch made clear to the director, Tom Gries, that she would not be following his instruction to run naked through the desert with the weapon. She also disregarded attempts to get her to shower under a water tower minus her shirt.
She returned to comedy for the satire The Magic Christian (1969) to play Priestess of the Whip alongside Peter Sellers’s millionaire who adopts the homeless Ringo Starr. She took top billing in Myra Breckinridge (1970), as a transgender movie critic, in a misjudged adaptation of Gore Vidal’s landmark novel.
Welch had the chance to shine in The Wild Party (1975), a period drama about the demise of silent pictures from the producer-director partnership of Ismail Merchant and James Ivory, in which she was cast as Queenie, the lover of a fading screen comedian. But she fell out with Ivory over a number of issues, for example refusing to do a bedroom scene nude. “From nearly the first day, we were at loggerheads,” he recalled, “and no professional relationship, no working relationship, was ever established.”
Switching to television brought Welch cameos in everything from the sitcoms Mork & Mindy (in 1979, as a villain from outer space) and Evening Shade (1993) to Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman (in 1995) and CSI: Miami (in 2012). She also comically played a temperamental version of herself attacking Cosmo Kramer (Michael Richards) and Elaine Benes (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) in a 1997 episode of Seinfeld.
She had a regular role in the comedy-drama series Date My Dad (2017) as Rosa, former mother-in-law of Ricky (Barry Watson), trying with his three children to find him love again following the death of his wife.
In 1997, there was another stint on Broadway, in the musical Victor/Victoria. She replaced Julie Andrews, who was undergoing throat surgery, for the final seven weeks of its run at the Marquis theatre. Variety described Welch as “at best a pleasantly passable singer”, suiting “the costumes better than she does the vocal and acting requirements”.
She returned to the cinema with a cameo role in the romcom Legally Blonde (2001), starring Reese Witherspoon. Her last film was How to Be a Latin Lover (2017).
Welch was married and divorced four times. She is survived by Damon and Tahnee, and by her brother, Jimmy.

Recap: The Heart of a Hero (chapters 1-143)
As promised, here’s a recap of most of The Heart of a Hero. Including 144-147 pretty much doubled the length since I was going play-by-play, so I’ll just leave those for y’all to reread if you need it. This’ll be a long one, so let’s just dive in
Class 1-B spent its first year trying and eventually succeeding at proving their merit compared to their sister class, 1-A. Kendo led them as class rep with some unofficial, volatile leadership coming from her childhood friend Monoma. Throughout the first semester, they would face a disguised All Might in combat, battle villains during their weeklong internships after a less-than-stellar Sports Festival Performance, take on their teachers in Final Exams that would push students such as Ibara and Monoma to the breaking point, and finally, survive a hellish camping trip and watch All Might fight his last battle. Soon after, they would move into dorms together, and it was around this time that Monoma and Kendo would begin a romantic relationship.
Up next came their License Exam, which saw them take on the multinational hero school Gaikoku Academy and their haughty leader, Victoria Hope, only to then join together in the second phase alongside four students from Isamu High School. Against the mock-villainesses Ryukyu and Nejire, the three schools prevailed together and received their provisional hero licenses. Not long after, they finally proved their mettle in a training battle against 1-A, besting them. Things were looking up for the class. That’s when Head Games enters the scene.
Head Games was a criminal group focused on designing, creating, and selling black market support items and weapons. They had first run afoul of the pro heroes and some of 1-B during the post-Sports Festival internships. While their hired muscle, the electrically powered Overdrive, was defeated and imprisoned, their mysterious leader, Kashiko Dokasuru escaped.
In December, 1-B would again run into this group, this time as their main targets. Looking to make a name for themselves as an independent villain group, Head Games lured them into a killing game with Kendo as the bait. The rest of the class went out to Head Games’ base and fought against their pre-chosen opponents. Ibara and Tetsutetsu defeated the weapon designer Yusen Setsuzoku and his tank, the Goliath Maxim. Kaibara and Tsuburaba took down their costume maker Airi Yokubo. Reiko, Kinoko, Shishida, and Kamakiri defeated their researcher Densen Byoki. Pony had a close call with the assassin Rocket, AKA Atsuen Sokudo, as did Shoda when he and Awase fought the item designer Suberidai Musei.
Yui had a reunion with her older brother Mugon Kodai, now going by the villain name Hush, one of the top officers of Head Games. His goal was to leave this life with Yui, convinced that the people he’s helped outfit with weapons will be too strong for anyone to handle. Yui refuses to leave her friends or her dream behind. Mugon tries to force Yui to submit and leave the country with him, but he is defeated. The truth of his involvement with Head Games stemming from trying to protect Yui from Head Games’ reprisal is left unsaid. An even closer call came from the battle between the battle-hungry assassin Chimera and Honenuki, Kuroiro, Bondo, and Manga, where Honenuki was forced to take a dosage of Trigger than ended the fight in his favor, but nearly made him lose himself to it. Setsuna and Rin’s battle nearly ended in death as they contended with the pair borrowed from the League of Villains, Dabi and Toga. Rin’s determination to live on and save his partner pushed his Quirk to new heights, unlocking the Full Dragon transformation, but the stress nearly killed him when Dabi’s desperate last stand struck his chest. Thanks to Kuroiro, though, he pulled through.
Monoma’s battle to save Kendo ended in failure as the Quirkless brawler Seijo Senbo nearly beat him to death, but Kendo cut a deal to save him, giving herself up to Kashiko’s Quirk, Absorption. Unfortunately, Kashiko had no intention of truly keeping her word and used Kendo’s Quirk to attack Monoma. Only the timely arrival of Tetsutetsu and Ibara saved him. Kendo was freed by the two, but in the confusion of a flashbang, they were absorbed by Kashiko in her place. In her rage, Kendo freed herself, letting her finally bring Kashiko down while Monoma, given a boost of confidence by Kendo’s freedom, defeated Seijo. Class 1-B had won the day, though it wasn’t without their fair share of physical and mental injuries.
The interim stories Draconic, Atlas, and Wild West Hero take place between this night and the beginning of their second school year. Draconic follows the psychological struggles felt by Setsuna and Rin after their near-fatal battle. With Ryukyu’s help, the pair accept what happened and what they need to do to heal. Atlas shows Kamakiri’s sparring bout with his new twin katanas against the hero Yoroi Musha. Though he doesn’t earn a place as an intern, Yoroi Musha assures him that his skills are great and that such a position may not be far off. Wild West Hero sees Pony visiting home and reunite with her now-retired aunt, the hero Cow Lady, as well as Pony’s visiting girlfriend, Melissa Shield.
With the new school year comes a new student in Hitoshi Shinso. Now sporting 21 students, Class 2-B is set to make waves at the inter-school meet, the Academy Clash, alongside their sister class. It’s here that we see Gaikoku Academy and Isamu High School team with Ketsubutsu High School and Shiketsu Academy in a joint team to take on 2-B, as there is an odd number of classes at the event. A lot rides on 2-B’s shoulders, as not only is this Shinso’s first real outing as a Hero Course student, but several students are being scouted for internships. Yoroi Musha is giving Kamakiri another chance to show him his swordsmanship, Ryukyu wants to see where Rin and Setsuna are after working through their pain in Draconic, and Miruko has taken an interest in Kendo.
During the battle, multiple groups split off and took on their share of opponents, with some growing a good deal in the heat of the fight. Setsuna, having decided that Rin is too nervous about her being in danger, is able to show off her strength by defeating Shishikura alone. Kaibara holds his own against Makabe, realizing that projectiles may be another way he can augment his fighting skills with support items. With help from Reiko and Awase, Shinso is able to assist in the defeat of three opponents. Honenuki leads Kuroiro, Bondo, and Manga against Inasa Yoarashi, wondering if he’s even close to his level after seeing him long ago in the Recommended Students’ assessment, and ultimately falls against him. This isn’t without bringing Inasa to the brink, though, and the four boys are succeeded by Rin, who is able to finally perform his Full Dragon transformation for the second-ever time and finish off Inasa. Against Shindo, who had been antagonizing him all afternoon for his unassuming appearance, Shoda is able to turn the tides and take him down. Finally, despite a brief panic attack where she imagines still being the captive of Head Games, Kendo is able to pull herself together in her rematch against Victoria Hope. With support items sent from I-Island’s Melissa Shield — a Full Gauntlet built for her hand’s size — Kendo is able to put down her rival just as the buzzer beeps. In the end, 2-B is victorious.
Those who had been scouted receive their internships, but Kendo doesn’t take hers yet, citing that she still has much to work out regarding her trauma. Miruko says the offer is available for the future, and Kendo has one last talk with Victoria Hope. Victoria talks about how her jump in strength hadn’t been just from training, but from an emerging idea among Quirk studies that extreme danger could force about changes in a Quirk. This “Sudden Evolution” as she calls it could bring about amazing growth and branching abilities in Quirks, and Kendo connects this possible phenomenon to a few similar instances in this past, from Shoda’s first use of Surge Impact and Rin’s unlocking of his Full Dragon form on the night of the Head Games battle, to all the way back to their battle against All Might when Monoma unconsciously used two Quirks at the same time. Victoria goes on to say that her own grew while fighting a strange enemy who seemed to have a transformative Quirk that turned his skin to bronze, but also could release sound attacks. Victoria warns Kendo of big things yet to happen and the event ends.
After the Academy Clash, 2-B enjoyed a semester without any major happenings, but with certain problems bubbling under the surface. Despite taking a mutual interest in Tatami Nakagame after the Academy Clash, Yui is unable to hold back her true feelings. Her hidden, lasting love for Kendo is revealed to the other girls, with Yui deciding that it isn’t the right time to say something. Having bonded with Nakagame, she tries to start a relationship with her, but after the first date, Yui realizes that letting go isn’t as easy as she’d like. Setsuna and Rin begin their internship with Ryukyu in an explosive way, fighting with her and Nejire, who at this point has changed her hero name to Wavelength, against the notorious Volcano Thieves. They win in the end, but are left with more questions than answers. Somehow, two of their members had been modified with mechanic enhancements and impossible-looking cybernetic implants. The third member’s special baton is able to lead the search back to Head Games, showing that their old items are still on the black market. Finally, and most importantly, is the sunrise tattoo with the kanji for “new” on each of their bodies.
During this time, Melissa Shield’s schooling at I-Island ends and she winds up in Japan on an extended vacation, bringing with her a pair of modified Full Gauntlets to replace the one Victoria Hope had broken. Kendo takes them and agrees to Awase’s name suggestion of the B.F.G.s while she is ecstatic about the upgrade. Pony is overjoyed, as is U.A.’s tech maniac Hatsume. Melissa and Hatsume end up bonding, working together on items such as a metal ball for Kaibara to spin-pitch at enemies and a not-yet-seen pair of special shoes for Shoda. Hatsume also shows she has reverse-engineered certain Head Games items like their Concussion Discs, happy to give inventions like these a new life as the tools of heroes. Melissa is glad to hear this and wishes to have the same ideals as she works her own internship as a Junior Developer at Kaiburu Labs. We’re also told that item manufacturers like Kaiburu Labs had been seeing many items and blueprints stolen mysteriously.
Shortly after this, two more chance meetings set the stage for a new menace to emerge. Kendo and Miruko, in stopping as robbery, have a chance meeting with a former hero called Deep Crimson, now a civilian who had been one of the robbery’s hostages. Kendo doesn’t recognize her at first, but Miruko does and is not happy to see her. Deep Crimson had been in jail for quite a while and needed clearance by a therapist to be released, having done something despicable long ago. Kendo tells herself that people can always change, but something sinister is indeed brewing with Deep Crimson at the center.
After this, while chaperoning Pony’s and Melissa’s day on the town in Zerutoro, Vlad encounters what seems to be a low-tier villain enjoying using his Quirk to make others suffer. He catches the villain and finds the same tattoo on his person that the Volcano Thieves had, and learns that on July 2nd, something terrible would happen in Zerutoro. The villain then disappears from out of Vlad’s grasp, likely teleported by some unseen villain’s Quirk. During all of this, Vlad reminisces about his past, including the time he was comforted by an upperclassman after a terrible showing at his first Sports Festival. The third-year student had told him that none of it mattered in the end and that the festival was terrible anyway, giving an unfair advantaged to physical fighters and those with flashy, destructive Quirks while leaving those with more niche abilities behind. Vlad doesn’t catch her name, but knew her by her hero name of Deep Crimson.
After everyone in 2-B passes their final exams for the semester, they and 2-A are asked for volunteers to assist on July 2nd. 10 from each class agree to go and are briefed on this mysterious organization. On the day of the attack, Kendo and Monoma fight against the bronze-skinned enemy Victoria had warned them about, “Sound Shocker” Bell, and find his skin to be merged with bronze plating while the sound attacks were his true Quirk. They go outside after defeating Bell to find Zerutoro in chaos and their classmates not doing nearly as well. Ibara had been frozen solid by another villain, Frostbiter, who also badly mangles Tetsutetsu’ hand with his icy teeth. Only through the intervention of Shoji, Bakugo, and Kirishima do they escape. Pony, Honenuki, Todoroki, and Midoriya take on the most destructive villain, Tusk, who seems to truly possess two Quirks — a transformation Quirk that changes him into a mammoth, and a rusting Quirk that corrodes anything in his vicinity. Armed with Trigger, he ruins much of Zerutoro and nearly crushes Pony, who is narrowly saved by Honenuki. Iida stops to help, joined soon by Kuroiro and Ojiro, only they are being chased. A large, musclebound villain with red skin and steam pipes built into his flesh begging to be attacked more is on their tails, and Kuroiro and Honenuki run for it. The situation is the same all over with such menaces as the bat woman with shocking kicks, a brutish cyborg with an explosive third eye, and a woman with razor straw under her command. This last villain reveals to Miruko that this group is called the New Power Generation, and their aim to dismantle Hero Society.
Operation: Nightfall, as the villains call it, comes to an end soon after. A lava-powered villain far stronger than Volcano encroaches on a safe space for civilians, leaving Rin and Ryukyu as the only ones capable of fighting him. The burning-hot Hellhound nearly takes Rin out, but Ryukyu dives in the way just in time to take the hit, leaving her on the verge of death. The villains leave after this with the same disappearing trick, leaving behind Bell as the only prisoner for the heroes, but not without taking one more thing. Monoma had stumbled upon Deep Crimson in an alleyway alongside a well-dressed blond man who seemed to be giving orders over an earpiece. Just as he puts two and two together, Monoma is attacked. In the aftermath, all heroes and students are accounted for except Monoma. The only trace that his companion could find is his blood and his tie.
At the hospital, Kendo is in a daze, unable to process the loss of the one closest to her and with only a stopwatch her had let her borrow to hang onto. Pony is shell-shocked after her near-death experience. Yui is wracked with guilt, feeling as though her wish from long ago to be rid of Monoma inadvertently caused his disappearance. Setsuna is furious at Rin, who is ashamed at his reckless behavior. Reiko’s intervention brings Setsuna to her senses about how Rin is feeling just after Vlad gives the boy a pep-talk. They are both told after making up that Ryukyu is awake, though likely not for long. Ryukyu assures Rin that it wasn’t his fault and that she’s proud of him. Motivated to not forget the lesson he’s learned, Rin cuts off his braid, vowing on it to never put those he cares for in jeopardy again.
All Might and Tsukauchi deliberate on their next move and the identity of their enemy’s ringleader. All they know so far is that he’s likely the one modding people’s bodies. Whoever took Monoma was likely blending into the crowd, they’ve concluded, and there’s nothing Bell can tell them. Tsukauchi’s instinct tell him that Bell’s memories of their organization have been blocked through another’s Quirk as his own lie-detecting Quirk has been ineffective. Though Tsukauchi is hesitant to bring in students for any upcoming mission involving this group, All Might argues in their defense, saying that with one of their own taken, they’d be all the more motivated to do something. Tsukauchi is convinced to start of the Team Up Mission initiative, putting All Might’s words to the test.

Animation Night 107: Mamoru Hosoda's digital worlds
Hi friends. Apologies for running late once again. It is once more Animation Night. Still grieving, but this ritual is important.
Tonight, I’ve decided it’s time to go back to our friend Mamoru Hosoda, last seen on Animation Nights 15, 47 and 61...
Tumblr media
The occasion is of course the release of Hosoda’s latest movie Belle (竜とそばかすの姫, Ryū to Sobakasu no Hime - lit. The Dragon and the Freckled Princess). This film reprises a theme that was very prominent in Hosoda’s early films such as Summer Wars and in fact the franchise film Digimon Adventure: young people going into an immersive digital world. It’s finally escaped the film festivals and, of course, landed in the hands of fansubbers.
Since I’ve already told the story of Hosoda’s career, I won’t write a huge writeup tonight. But I will point to a fascinating recent article by kVin which draws out some parallels between Hosoda’s One Piece film, Baron Omatsuri and the Secret Island, not entirely subtly reflecting his terrible experience at Studio Ghibli... and the recent film Pompo the Cinephile directed by Takayaki Hirao. We’ll get to Pompo at some point soon, trust me!
In previous Animation Nights, or kVin’s articles, you can read about the clockwork two year cycle that Hosoda uses to produce his films, and their characteristic elements: a strong focus on family relationships, kagenashi (unshaded) designs, splendid and charming character animation drawing on the many talented animators with whom Hosoda has cultivated relationships. With good reason, he’s one of the most popular ‘auteur’ directors in anime at the moment.
Tumblr media
That all had to start somewhere, though, and for Hosoda that was his franchise films at Toei, the first being a series of short films relating to Digimon Adventure (which would be recut as one movie in the US, often called Digimon: The Movie). I never saw this as a kid - for some reason the kids at my school imagined a kind of rivalry between Pokémon and Digimon, and rather than enjoy both I ended up receiving this sense of Digimon as an inferior knockoff best skipped! - but they’re well-remembered, as this detailed writeup by kVin 20 years on in 2019 attests.
Digimon began life as a line of Tamagotchi-style ‘digital pets’ made by WiZ/Bandai in 1997, making it just narrowly younger than Pokémon. The premise is that there is a virtual realm in which you can go and form relationships with little virtual creatures, and beyond that, things are rather vague, and there wasn’t a lot of story to it.
This changed at the end of the 90s, with a move to make a PS1 game and a TV anime to plant the desire for their products in the soft vulnerable minds of children. To this end, they hired the venerable Toei, still one of the largest anime studios who handle many of the really ‘big’ franchises such as One Piece. So this is where Hosoda came in, working on a short film that was to become the pilot for the anime.
Tumblr media
In kVin’s account, Hosoda played quite a large role in shaping the story:
Chances are that your mental image of an anime project meant to promote a property with aspirations of becoming a merchandising behemoth is restrictive, with countless guidelines set before the creators come into play. And while that’s true in many situations, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re meticulously planned or that producers know what they want in the first place. As mentioned by Hosoda himself, Digimon Adventure: The Movie (not to be confused with the embarrassing western mishmash) was in the works before the TV show was pitched, even though it’s now seen as nothing but its prologue. There was no real narrative to use as a springboard either, nor was there an established cast of characters; though the looks of certain characters like protagonist Taichi were determined by cross-media obligations with series that preceded the anime like Digimon Adventure V-Tamer 01, it was Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru‘s designs that served as the starting point for the cast
Some of Hosoda’s early vetoed ideas sound wild:
Execs would vaguely nudge the staff in certain directors and sometimes veto their wildest ideas – we’ll never have Hosoda wacky Digimon comedy set in the 60s and led by Taichi’s dad – yet never offer constructive guidance.
Despite these less than auspicious circumstances, the freedom granted to Hosoda gave him the opportunity to make something much better than one might presume for this kind of project, with appearances of animation legends like Mitsuo Iso(!) perhaps prefiguring his later Dennou Coil; it is also the start of what we could call the ‘bubble’ around Hosoda:
Regular Hosoda allies like Takaaki Yamashita (supervisor for the first of many Hosoda films) and Hideki Hamasu (ace animator of sorts, a role he’d also reprise in multiple occasions) are joined by people like Mitsuo Iso who need no introduction, but it’s the hyperrealism in Hisashi Mori‘s animation that anchors the battle to reality in such hair-raising way.
This touches on a question we might have - it takes hundreds of people working diligently for a long time to make a film, and yet, we often fall into the habits of auteurism where every major artistic quality is seen as ultimately flowing from the director. Perhaps the reason this works at all is because of these clusters of relationships: ‘Mamoru Hosoda’ is a shorthand for not just the man himself, but also the group of his friends/colleagues/comrades/whatever you wanna say, who we can expect to come back on many of his films with their own particular touch. Altogether we can refer to the ‘will’ that shapes a film as something of the egregore created by this group. (Talking about studios is another such handle on identifying these clusters of people.)
Hosoda would go on to direct two more short films for Digimon, the main one being Our War Game! (2000); these would be awkwardly sutured into a movie along with one of the post-Hosoda movies in the dubbed release. We're here for Hosoda though so rest assured I’m getting the short films.
Tumblr media
A full ten years after Digimon, Hosoda had left franchise films behind and gone to work instead with Madhouse, creating the delightful The Girl who Leapt Through Time which we watched way back on AN 15. This is where we come to Summer Wars (2009), which reprises this idea of a virtual reality battle between kids, developing the ideas of Our War Game. Here, a virtual social network heavily integrated into infrastructure causes chaos when hacker kids accidentally activate an evil AI.
The film is set in Ueda, a town near where Hosoda grew up with historical significance as a fortress used by the Sanada clan during the sengoku period. By now we’ve reached the mature version of Hosoda’s style: the clean kagenashi look, emphasis on energetic character animation, and family relationships are all right there; main character Kenji is staying with his friend Natsuki’s dying grandmother and she gets caught up in the chaos. It sounds delightful honestly and I’m really looking forward to watching it; regrettably I don’t have a detailed writeup of this one beyond the usual material on Hosoda.
Tumblr media
Then at last we have Belle - once again coming to a digital world, this time just slightly more than ten years on! Hosoda’s latest film follows a seventeen-year-old girl Suzu who lost her ability to sing after the death of her mother, but rediscovers her passion for performance as an avatar in a colourful virtual world. Here, she gets drawn into the intrigue surrounded by a mysterious figure called the ‘Dragon’ after he disrupts one of her concerts. This time, the digital world spills out into the real in a different way: a vigilante named Justin starts threatening both Suzu and the ‘Dragon’ with doxxing, essentially.
The film is notable for being one of Hosoda’s first films to make heavy use of CG; the scenes inside the virtual world use 3DCG to attempt to hit that sense of overwhelming spectacle, while more usual usual cel animation is used outside. It also breaks a little from strict kagenashi with some use of digital compositing and filters, although the designs still carry that familiar simplicity and direct, childlike appeal. This change proved a little controversial for fans of Hosoda, and I’m going to be interested to see how well it holds up...
And sadly that’s about all I have time to write! Animation Night will go live shortly at https://twitch.tv/canmom - hope you can join me there! And afterwards I think I may stay up to try and get drawing again, but we’ll see.

Beetle Juice au?
Invisible
On a rainy day, Norman and his family mourn the passing of his mother
As the funeral proceeds, Norman, reflects on the death of his mother and his own inability to be noticed by his dad, Perry
Dipper: *Once Norman finishes his song* Holy crap. A ballad already? And such a bold departure from the original source material!
The Whole ‘Being Dead’ Thing
Dipper, a millennia-old demon named continues to mock the idea of living life to the fullest, as it will all be worthless once death comes
And, using his ghost, he breaks the fourth wall, explaining that, as a demon, he is invisible to all living beings unless he gets a living person to say his name three times, and reveals that he has come up with a plan to accomplish this.
He introduces Lili and Raz Aquato-Zanotto, a normal married couple who want to start a family
Ready, Set, Not Yet
But, like most couples, they’re not emotionally ready and procrastinate on that plan by coming up with a bunch of hobbies
As they reason to themselves why they’re not ready to start a family just yet, they fall through unstable floorboards and die
Dipper: … See? I wasn’t kidding! It’s a show about death!
Immediately after, The Handbook for the Recently Deceased falls into Dipper’s hands… Only for him to burn it, as all is a part of his plan
The Whole ‘Being Dead’ Thing Part 2
When Lili and Raz awaken from their fall and realize that they are dead, Dipper reveals himself to the couple and offers to help them adjust to the Afterlife
He reveals to the couple that a new family, the Babcocks, have bought their house and that in order to remain alone, they will have to scare them away, so Lili and Raz accept his help
While moving in, Perry reveals to Norman that he wants to start a gated community, using the house as a flagship model home, and is holding a dinner party with some business friends.
Dead Mom
Norman resents this, trying to get it through Perry’s head that it’s been a week since his mother’s funeral and he doesn’t seem to care expresses her desire for her mother to return, mentioning the fact that nobody seems to care that she is gone.
Praying for her to send a sign that she is still there, Norman vows to make Perry acknowledge the fact that tragedy struck their family
Meanwhile the attic, Dipper is trying to teach the Aquato-Zanottos how to be scary.
Fright of Their Lives
Despite his best attempts, they prove to be not scary at all…
Seriously, they suck
Dipper: Why God/Satan did you send these bed-wetters?! Even like a tax attorney would have been better! Somebody with gravitas, somebody to fear who-
Raz: Excuse me, Dipper! We can kind of hear you!
Dipper: Yeah? Well, that was a soliloquy so you're the one who's being rude.
Dipper becomes frustrated with the couple and abandons them, so they vow to scare the Babcock family away themselves ("Ready Set" (reprise)).
No Reason
Meanwhile, Victoria, a woman who Perry hired to be Norman’s life coach (and his secret lover), tells Norman how everything happens for a reason
But this is not what Norman needs right now and storms off after their session
While looking around the house, Norman meets the couple as they are roaming the house trying to scare the family.
Norman wants to leave the house just as much as Lili and Raz want his family out, so he tries to convince his dad that the house is haunted, only to find out that he and Victoria are engaged
Angry at the news, Norman heads to the roof where Dipper laments that he will never be seen
Invisible Reprise
While on the roof, Dipper hears Norman reciting what appears to be lines from a s*icide note.
Norman: “I’m alone. Forsaken. Invisible.
Dipper: That makes two of us.
Norman: Who the hell are you?
Dipper: … Can you… See me?
Norman: Yeah?…
Dipper: You can see me! I’m gonna have a new best FRIEEEEEEND!
Say My Name
He becomes ecstatic when he realizes Norman can see him and tries to convince him not to kill himself, with the intention of getting him to free him from his curse
However, Norman just teases Dipper, acting as if he might say his name, but then doesn’t just so he can see Dipper be all moody and pout
And honestly, he doesn’t seem like the ‘scaring’ type
Lili and Raz come to check on Norman, only to be possessed by Dipper into saying positive things about him to further convince Norman
Upon learning about possession and that any ghost can do it, regardless of skill, Norman decides not to work with Dipper and instead work with the couple to ruin Perry’s party
Dipper: Woah, woah, woah woah woah! Hold up, hold up, guy, I'm your pal! They're sweet, but I'm a demon straight from Hell! I know, I went a little hard on my sell! But we're BF-F-F-F's forever- *Norman pushes him off the roof*
Lili/Raz: Norman!
Norman: What? He was already dead.
Day-O (The Banana Boat Song)
At the dinner party, things go smooth at first…
Until Lili and Raz possess Perry, Victoria, and their guests
Barbara and Adam possess Charles, Delia and their guests
However, instead of being scared, the investors see the ghosts as a selling point; making them more interested in Charles' project
Feeling desperate, Norman resorts to summoning Dipper
Now visible to the living and able to affect the world around him, he forces Lili and Ra to the attic before throwing Perry, Victoria, and the investors out of the house, much to Norman’s joy.
Act 2
Girl Scout
A Boy Scout named Neil explains to the audience how he has a heart condition where anything shocking could stop his heart
But, despite all of that, he is nevertheless excited to be a Boy Scout.
He rings the doorbell of the Babcock's house and is greeted by Norman, who invites him inside
However, Dipper appears and frightens the poor boy into leaving
That Beautiful Sound
He even summons more versions of himself to help Norman scare every visitor that comes to the house
As the two hang out together more, they start to grow more close (Relax, Dipper’s like Princess Bubblegum, biologically millions of year old, but physically 18, and Norman’s 18)
Dipper also tells Norman that since he lives and works among the dead now, he should also follow their rules, and gives him a copy of the Handbook for the Recently Deceased.
But because he is not dead, Norman cannot open it. Despite this, he realizes it could help him reunite with her mother, and runs to the attic for Lili and Raz’s help
Feeling alone and betrayed again, Dipper talks with his clones about how he wants to leave the house to finally connect with people now that he can be seen
To achieve this, he decides to trick Norman into marrying him, which will allow him to roam free in the living world
In the attic, Lili and Raz help Norman open the Handbook, when they realize they should have gone straight to the Netherworld instead of remaining in their house.
Lili opens the door to the Netherworld, but Lili shuts it and the Handbook, afraid of leaving the house.
This angers Norman as he hoped to use the book to summon his dead mother and leaves disappointed
Raz 2.0
Raz realizes that all of their fear has held him and Lili back, so they decide to become bolder, better, more impulsive people
Victoria, Perry re-enter the house to save Norman with Courtney, Perry’s sister who, thanks to her guru, found a box that can supposedly trap souls.
Dipper reluctantly tricks Norman by telling him that reading a passage from the book will resurrect his mother,
But instead, he unknowingly begins to exorcise Raz and is forced to agree to marry Dipper to stop it
Dipper quickly stops the exorcism and opens a door to the Netherworld to send Lili and Raz away for good, but Norman jumps through the door, with Courtney following after her little brother
Enraged that his plan has failed and he won’t get to be with Norman, Dipper decides to kill everyone instead
What We Know Now
Norman and Courtney enter the Netherworld and are greeted by Coraline and Wybie, who along with other Netherworld residents, urge them to return to the living world
Coraline: Kid, if we knew then what we know now…
Wybie: We wouldn’t have had our little “accident”.
They then meet Mabel, director of Netherworld Customs and Processing, who soon finds out they are still alive
Home
Norman runs from Mabel and frantically searches for his mother in the Netherworld, but is unable to find her
Courtney finds Norman in distress and comforts her, explaining how she misses their mother too, but was trying to stay strong for him
With that, the siblings return to the house, where Dipper is preparing to kill everyone
Creepy Dead Guy
Norman plans to trick him by agreeing to marry him as Courtney, Perry, Victoria, Lili; and Raz, and the Maitlands get the demon ready
Everyone: Here comes the groom, here comes the groom! Witness it in this very room! Crazy how some cultures think this thing ain’t alright.
The wedding brings Dipper to life, but before Norman can stab him, Dipper recites some of the most heartwarming vows, showing Norman that he actually cares for him
This only makes it harder for Norman to stab him and kill him again, which will make him "Recently Deceased".
Suddenly, Mabel appears and reveals herself as Dipper’s sister, and tries to take Norman back with her for “Aliving” her brother
Then Dipper explaines to Mabel that he’s enjoyed his five minutes of living and being married, moving Mabel to happy tears and she decides not to split them up
Jump in the Line (Dead Mom Reprise)
Later, with help from his new husband, (‘Boyfriend’ around Parry) Norman accepts that although his mother is gone, there is still so much left to enjoy in life

Best Friend For Hire Reprise, 382
 “Slow down!” exclaimed Iris.  “Turn left just up ahead.”
 I nodded and complied.  She knew where her boss lived better than any of us, having never visited this suburb befored.  I probably would have missed the break in the endless fence had she not warned me, especially when I was trying to guess the cost of having a large amount of land next to a park in a pricey suburb.  To my surprise, the gate opened for us immediately.
 “He doesn’t care much for security, does he?” I teased, looking around to see if there was some sort of guard who would have opened the gate for us.
 “Mila watches everything, so there’s no need.  There are sensors and cameras all over the yard that let her know if anything is disturbed.” explained Iris matter-of-factly.
 I nodded, but my eyes were locked on our destination in the distance, barely visible through all of the rain.  I had considerably underestimated the size of this place.  I very much doubted that I could even afford to maintain the yard for very many years and could only guess that the property tax had to be immense.
 As my sons grew excited about the bushes, I looked over and stared for several seconds.  Every single bush along the long driveway had been carefully sculpted into characters that I recognized from video games my kids enjoyed.  I could only imagine the amount of time and number of people involved in such artwork, leading me to believe James spent even more on his yard annually than I originally had guessed.  Even the fountain—an immense, two-story affair that was very elaborately sculpted—was immaculate, showing no signs of wear or neglect.  James certainly knew how to make an impression.
 When we stepped inside, passing past two sets of double doors that opened for us, James was descending down one of the staircases which curved up to a balcony on the second floor.  “James!  Thank you for having us.  This is quite a place you’ve got here.  Sorry if we brought the storm.” I told him, gesturing to the weather outside.
 “There’s plenty to see.” he politely agreed.  “Thank you for accepting the invitation.  I thought you might be interested in seeing a little more about my company than most, since you seemed curious during the game.  Mick was supposed to stop by a while ago but apparently didn’t get the time.”
 “This place is awesome!” exclaimed Matt.
 “Sorry, James.” muttered Mick.
 “No need to apologize.  We’ll just review with your family today what I wanted to tell you before.” replied James, smiling at us.
 I suddenly found myself floating as a soft breeze blew at me from inside the mansion.  Looking to my sides, I saw that my family, save for my daughter, were also floating.
 Before I could do more than exclaim in surprise, James spoke up, telling us, “Magic is real, and your family can use it.”
 I stared at them, my mind trying to figure out how he was doing this.  Was this some elaborate prank using a new technology?  “Wh-What…” was all I managed to say before we were gently lowered to the ground.
 “You wanted to know what I was feeding my employees.  I train them physically, mentally, and in magical arts.  We didn’t use spells at the baseball game, but we have numerous advantages that are completely unfair.” explained James.  “For example, I can physically lift your family’s van, though using spells is easier to ensure I don’t compromise the frame.”
 I swore, feeling like I had been had, before my better judgement kicked in.  My family was currently at this boy’s mercy.
 James’ smile broadened as he said, “If you don’t mind coming out back, I’ll ask the wonderful gardener to demonstrate something people tend to grasp more easily.”  Not hearing any argument from us, he motioned for us to follow him and started telling us  “Mirabella and Mike can’t create the electrical discharges like the rest of you.  She has a different heritage, and Mike took after his mother.”
 “How could you possibly know that?” asked Mike in surprise.
 “My secretary ran a background check on Iris prior to her being hired, and she’s so thorough that I feel like she knows everything.  You wouldn’t believe how long she takes to brief me on things.” explained James as he glanced back at my son.  “My concern with Mick is that he and Iris tended to play games with their ability, which caught enough notice for my secretary to file it in the report.  There are some out there who prey on those with abilities such as yours, so being a little more cautious tends to be wise.”
 That sounded far too believable.  I probably should have chewed those two out more often, but I had never believed anyone would have noticed their antics.  “You claim you can lift cars, and you can obviously lift us.  What else can you do, James?” I asked, wanting a firmer handle on whom I was dealing with.
 “So many things, Dad.  James is like a wizard combined with an overly strong fighter from some fantasy novel.” insisted Iris from behind me.
 I glanced back at her, surprised at how serious she looked.
 “I’ve also learned to make a great cup of tea.  My wife can be picky.” insisted James.
 “What’s that smell..?” questioned Mike longingly.
 Now that he mentioned it, I didn’t recognize the smell either, though I was certain it was food.  My mouth was already watering.
 “We’re almost to the kitchen, and Marco’s making you quite the treat.  I’m sure he won’t mind us passing through.  Just be prepared for a few samples.” encouraged James.
 The kitchen was as large as was fitting a house this size, and even there the fanciful engravings didn’t yield.  Every cabinet was beautifully carved, as were the very large table and chairs.
 Marco, the chef, was extraordinarily eager for us to sample “a few things” before we moved onward, despite assuring us that dinner would be ready soon.  Only when James pointed out there was more for us to see before dinner did Marco give way, giving us permission to pass through his kitchen into the garden beyond.
 The rain didn’t reach us as we followed James outside, hitting some invisible barrier and sliding away.
 “I don’t suppose you worry about getting struck by lightning.” I commented as I watched the sky.
 “Worried, no, but I didn’t find that to be pleasant either.” he told me sincerely.
 I stared at him, my eyes searching for any sign that he had ever been struck, but I found nothing, save for how confident he seemed.
 “If your magic were stronger, you’d actually be able to guide a lightning bolt around you.  Iris has practiced enough that she could knock an assailant down with just the shock.” he commented, making me glance back at my daughter.
 “You can?” questioned Mick excitedly.
 She nodded, grinned, and said, “Yep, though I could take you in a fight without one.”
 “All trained up now, are you?” questioned Mark, my eldest son.
 Iris laughed, shaking her head.  “You wouldn’t believe the standards here.”
 “I take it that James is the strongest, being the boss.” suggested Mike.
 James shook his head and said, “Not even close.”  Then he pointed to a fortress in the distance and asked “Do you see the keep over there?”
 I nodded along with a couple of my sons.
 “The strongest best friend created that with a stray thought.” claimed James.
 “What!?  No way!” exclaimed Mike.
 Nodding, James said, “She showed up in my office to tell me that she ‘oopsed’ a second after.  She’s been training recently to avoid that type of mistake.  I imagine she’ll be capable of creating a large city in a day on a whim within a few years.  I’d probably spend at least a week on a small town, and that’s if I collected the resources ahead of time.”
 I found the idea mind-boggling.  James seemed humble as he claimed that he could create a small town in a week.
 “You’d take at least a month, man-sla-... er… boss?” announced Emma, turning the statement into a question at the end.  “You get too distracted.  I could handle a village in an hour!”  She was soaked, but grinning.
 Before my eyes, the water soaking her clothes drifted away to join the rain outside.
 “Emma, I’m sure you remember Iris’ father, Grayson.  This is her mother, Mirabella.  From oldest to youngest, her brothers are Mark, Mick, Mike, and Matt.  Everyone, this is my gardener, Emma.”
 “Shouldn’t I be your favorite gardener?” she asked teasingly.
 “Sure.” he conceded.
 “Hear that?  I’m his favorite!” she exclaimed proudly.
 “Do you create villages with a stray thought?” questioned Mike.
 “Nah.  I do this.” she replied, watching us all.  After a couple seconds, wooden buildings rose out of the ground between the garden and the keep.
 “Mine would have functional electricity, plumbing, and the other luxuries people expect these days.” argued James with a smile.
 She stuck her tongue out at him.  Then she said, “My plumbing would work if I created a water tower.  Plants can be very good at guiding water.  As for electricity, I’ve been talking with Jarod about ways to generate a current with plants.  We have plans and stuff!”
 “You mean he had a crazy idea and chatted your ear off.” suggested James.
 “I thought the idea was cool and agreed to try eventually!” she insisted.
 “The idea was actually Maxine’s.  She has some experience with bioengineering from when she considered creating a cyborg army.” corrected Mila, who had discretely joined us without me noticing.
 “You can create cyborgs!?’ questioned Matt excitedly.
 “There has been some tech created here which could be used toward that end, but we’re not experimenting on people.” explained James.
 “I didn’t know you were in the tech industry.” commented my wife.
 James smiled at her and diplomatically told her “My company dabbles in many things to help prepare our best friends for a very large variety of jobs.”
 Grinning, Emma said, “He means to say ‘Yes.  Yes, we are.’  Mua ha ha ha ha!”  She drummed her fingers together while obviously attempting to look like some comic book villain.
James sighed and said, “Emma, mind getting rid of your starter village and showing the Storms how you help the kitchen?”
 “Fiiiine,” she begrudgingly told him, “but I might use some buildings to compliment the topiary when I change things up again.”
 “Sounds fun.” he agreed.
 From there, she started demonstrating how she could make the plants grow, revert to seeds, or provide as much food as she wanted.  She could also force plants to grow beyond their normal proportions and control them as easily as she controlled her own limbs, which led her into demonstrating how she had produced the bats her team had used for our baseball game.  Before she seemed remotely ready to quit demonstrating her abilities, Mila announced that food was ready.
 Instead of eating at the long table in the kitchen, we were taken to a large dining hall with an even more elaborate table.  There were already carts of food waiting nearby, and Mila urged us to help ourselves, since no one here would hesitate when they arrived.
 As we ate, we were entertained with more demonstrations of magic from those who had joined us.  James’ wife, Alma, created elaborate displays of fire and ice.  Ai and Mai created a sort of play with tiny figures made of water acting out their parts just above the table.  Jemal fetched more food for the particularly hungry using nothing but his magic, causing whatever was requested to float through the air.  James himself demonstrated illusions, making us see whatever he wanted while assuring us the magic the others had used was real.  Whether because I had felt myself being lifted earlier or because he had no reason to lie, I believed him.  Iris’ boss was the most interesting, and perhaps the most dangerous, man I had ever met.

Ally: Mischief, the Delving Daredevil.
If I’m going to be honest, I don’t even really need this stuff. After my first couple of dungeon-jumps I realized I was doing it for the thrill. Plus it’s good cardio: nothing quite gets the blood pumping like running from a cult you’ve just pissed off.... speaking off, you might want to start doing some stretches, I give it about fifteen minutes before they realize I swapped out their idol and they don’t look like the types to take a joke.
Setup: Part pal, part rival, Mischief sails into the party’s life with nothing but good vibes, a belaying line, and a smile. One of the few brave enough to explore dungeons solo, this intrepid thief considers themself an “Action Archeologist”, dropping into hostile sites to secure dangerous artifacts before they can be misused by those with sinister aims. So what if they happen to line their bags with valuables on the way out, and so what if the folks that hire them have hidden motives? An adventurer’s gotta eat after all, and if their patrons happen to be sketchey, why they’ll be happy to steal those artifacts for someone else.
Independent to a fault, Mischief is fine if the party decides they want to team up, but absolutely refuses to be slowed down or learn anyone else’s playbook. If Mischief thinks they know where the prize is and the party wants to explore? Mischief is going slip away and head directly for it, leaving the heroes to either catch up with them, or be left to deal with the chaos they leave in their wake.
Adventure Hooks:
The group first “encounters” Mischief  half way through a dungeon, when a wandering monster or enemy patrol alerted by the daredevil ends up diverting into the party’s path. When the party reaches the main treasure room at the end, they find the best spoils taken, with a note reading “ Thanks for getting that thing off my trail, sorry I couldn’t stay to chitchat. I’ll return the favor some day   ~M● ” The initial has extra ink splotched around it, which may be unintentional, but the party gets the definite impression that the signature is supposed to be read as a winky face.
Mischief may also catch up with the party while they’re resting up at a tavern, having been hired to retrieve an item that’s ended up in their possession after a successful delve. Working as the agent for someone more than a little sinister, Mischief offers to buy the item in question, and if rebuffed gives an honest warning about a reprisal that may follow.
The Daredevil is an amazing resource should the party be planning either a heist or wilderness expedition, as they’re quick to share just how they’d tackle such a challenge.... which is obviously the best way of going about it.  The party will be need to sure that the job at hand is too complicated for one person to pull off, as Mischief may grow bored with just consulting and decide to do it themselves if the party spends too long with logistics/scheming.
Looking to get rid of a curse that’s been following them since their last job and suspecting that the party will likely be able to figure out a solution, Mischief slips the curse object into their gear and watches from a safe distance as they deal with the fallout, only revealing themself if things take a turn for the worse. Mischief would totally shunt bad luck onto a friend’s plate, but they’re not going to let anyone die on their behalf. They’re a reckless jerk, but not an asshole.

How about the Leverage Crew arriving in Central City in time for the that time Barry got accused of murdering DeVoe. Basically, Leverage Crew (Classic or Redeption is your choice) meddling in that plan. Because screw DeVoe. Can be in the same universe as The Central City job, or a brand new AU; your choice.
this one Long The courthouse was packed when a sleek black van pulled up to a loading zone. Nathan Ford turned from the passenger seat. “You all know the play?” “Mm, yup,” Parker said, clipping a badge to her blazer pocket. “The Boston skip.” “It’s not the Boston Skip,” Hardison snapped, fussing with his tie.. “You’re just grumpy because you have to play the lawyer again.” Eliot smirked. “Hey, you said only if it comes to a cross examine, I did my job, if you all do your jobs right and it doesn’t come to that,” Hardison’s voice pitched upwards. “If?” Sophie put on the emergency break. “If? Hardison, I’m hurt.” “Soph,” Nate sighed. “Let it go.” “For now. We’re having words later,” Sophie insisted. “Can we just get this over with?” Eliot asked, maneuvering to take the driver’s seat. “ you know I don’t like us splitting up like this.” “It’ll only be for a bit,” Parker said, squeezing his hand. “ We’ll be fine.” They left the van in twos, first Parker and hardison, briefcase and extraneous computer in hand, and a minute or two later Sophie and Nate followed-- and Nate with a plain folder tucked under his arm. Eliot drove in the direction of the police station, ready for the next phase of the plan. They hadn’t exactly called ahead, but that wasn’t going to be much of a problem. Cisco Ramon was the first to spot them. He goggled a bit. “What are you doing here?” he asked as Hardison approached the bench where Team Flash had congregated. Hardison smiled, knowing the prosecutor was watching. “I came to offer my services,” he said, sending a quick text with a thought. “ Where is Ms Horton?” “Here,” the short woman said, her eyes cutting between the two as Cisco checked his phone. “ Who are you? Cisco, who is--” Cisco looked up from the message--you didn’t see us coming?-- and relaxed slightly for the first time in weeks. “I’m part of Mr. Allen’s legal team,” Hardison smiled wide. “He’s ok, Cecile,” Cisco vouched. “ He and his, uh, coworkers have helped us in the past. With Z--wait, that was before you. Um.” “My firm helped get Henry Allen some money, after that unfortunate mess. And we’re here to see justice through again.” He hesitated. “ Or pick up where it leaves off,” he said under his breath. Cecile took in a sharp breath. “When did we hire you?” “Uh--” “Cecile, it’s really ok,” Caitlin joined the cluster. “They know about STAR. And apparently about the recent… developments.” “You think we don’t keep tabs on your crazy city? Now, Ms. Horton, as your co-lawyer, we need to discuss strategy. I’ve got some character witnesses I’d like to introduce, some crucial evidence that needs to be submitted, is there an office we might use?” He steered her away, nodding to Parker, deep in conversation with the prosecutor.
“You let that jerk stick around?” Iris jumped when she heard the voice in her ear. Turning she sighed with recognition. “ Lilli--Sophie?” “In the flesh.” She smiled. “I can’t stay long, but Eliot wanted me to ask.” Iris sighed. “If it’s Eliot asking, I guess you mean Harry. He’s been a lot better since Eliot kicked his ass, that’s for sure. And he has been helpful.” “I’m sure,” Sophie sounded anything but sure. “Listen, we’ve got this pretty well handled, but you and your friends may wish to be ready in case of reprisals. Have you upgraded security lately?” “Cisco’s worked on it,” Iris confirmed. “Good. Hardison would love to take a look, later. We’re probably going to be in the area, we’ve had word something’s fishy at that prison of yours.” When Iris opened her mouth Sophie shook her head. “Iron Heights. Point is, we’ll be around should you need anything.” “Thank you for the offer,” Iris said. She shook her head. “ These people are smart, Sophie. Dangerous.” “Not compared to my team,” Sophie smiled. “Save your worry. Look, see? Hardison’s in place, and Parker’s in the wings. I’ve got to go take care of my part. If you see your husband, let him know, will you?” “I-- sure,” Iris said, and she watched as Sophie stood and walked into a crowd. An entirely different person made her way past a bailiff and into the Juror’s box, leaning over to the man beside her and nodding in the direction of the door Barry Allen had just been escorted through. As Iris stood to take his hand across the gap between his seat and the benches, Sophie gave a little nod to the two of them. “It is strange,” the man said. “But I don’t think we’re meant to discuss the case until we’re in the back.” “Of course not,” Sophie said. “I was just thinking about it, is all. If it were a scene in a mystery novel, I’d call it too obvious.” “You do have a point,” the man agreed. “I’m actually a novelist myself.” “You don’t say,” Sophie smiled. “Classic red herring, am I right? And what a story. Two men in the same family accused of nearly identical murders…” She tapped her com, giving a quick signal. Nate was up. “Ah, a quick word?” Nate stepped away from the wall, flagging down Mrs. DeVoe and her companion. “No,” she snapped, putting on what Nate could see was a reasonably convincing mask of Grieving Widow. Convincing to a mark, maybe. But the Mako was right--you can’t con a conman. “Vultures, all of you.” “Oh, I’m not a reporter.” Nate said easily. He nodded to the tall man at Marlize’s Elbow. “Mr. DeVoe, I’m sure you’ll want to hear what I have to say.” He was pleased to see shock cross the face of Dominic Lanse. The man grabbed him by the arm, yanking him into an empty room. Mrs. DeVoe followed, locking it behind her. “Just so you are aware, there is video footage of you dragging me in here,” Nate said in his most helpful voice. “In case you decide to kill me here, probably not your smartest move.” he glanced around. “Private, though. Good.” He gave his signature infuriating grin. “Make this quick,” Clifford said in Dominic’s voice. “Court begins soon.” “Right, well, that’s going to be your problem.” Nate shrugged. “ Let’s skip the pleasantries. I know everything, about your plan at least. Your computer banks! Normal people couldn’t even find them, so you’ve got that going for you, though the security is lacking once you get past that, so B+. I am not Normal People. I have the best hacker in the multiverse, though, so,” he clicked his tongue in mock dismay, “like I said, my team and I --I’m sure you’re trying to think of who we are right now--know everything.” Marlize glanced at her silent watch, frowning. “Oh, no, no, I’m not a meta.” Nate shook his head. “But the thing is, I don’t have to be to destroy you.” “What--” “Again. I know everything, Thinker. Your basement prison, your hidden files, what you want with that satellite… you really shouldn’t have written everything down… twice even.” He fished a small book out of his pocket, and let them see the plain cover. Clifford’s eyes darkened. “That’s mine.” “Yeah, well, I also have the
multiverse’s greatest thief.” “Our home is under police protection and surveillance. There are officers--” “There right now, I’m aware.” Eliot Spencer, clutching a cup of coffee in one hand, flashed a badge at the pair of officers standing by a door. “Any trouble?” “Nope. She just left for the courthouse. Some work, huh? Just standing here.” “Hmm.“ Eliot agreed. “Though I guess if something did happen, the Flash would swoop in.” “Nine times out of ten,” the first officer agreed. “Or one of his buddies. “ “Maybe 8 times,” the second officer shrugged. “ You new?” “Just transferred from Keystone.” Eliot said. “Not so much nonsense there.” “I hear that. Good to have the backup though.” Eliot nodded. “ You do a walk through?” “Uh, no…. Like I said, no trouble, officer-- “Ted Crichton,” Eliot interrupted. “You haven’t walked through? What if someone’s in there, waiting to assault Mrs. DeVoe when she gets back?” “Well, uh, we don’t have a warrant--” “For crying out loud--” Eliot pulled a paper from his pocket. “See? Now let's go. You stay out here. Who has the back-- does no one have the back door? “ The officers hurried inside. “Don’t forget to check the closets,” Eliot called. -- “ Like I said. Best thief. Best hacker. Now, honestly--and you can run the numbers-- your best bet would be to cut your losses right here, right now. You’re already lying on the stand, so say you were coerced into implicating Mr. Allen--if you need someone to blame I do have a list of patsys that really need the jail time. You do that, put your little plan,” he waggled the book “ back in the box or write it up as the next dystopian best seller for High School English classes to dissect for decades to come, and you can walk away from this.” A laugh. “No one will believe anything you say. That book can’t be traced to me, and even if it could be, it doesn’t prove anything. So someone thinks I’m a supervillain. I’m dead. You have nothing that proves Mr. Allen innocent. You’re out of your mind, Mr. Ford.” “Oh good, you know who I am. Think a little harder.” “As threats go, it’s half baked,” Marlize challenged. “What are you going to do if we refuse? Break Allen out of jail so he can be a fugitive? He’d never go along with it. And the Flash can’t stop us.” “I’d run those numbers again, you’ve left out quite a few variables. But no.” “No?” “If you refuse, if you keep up your little game, lie on the stand, sell that sob story, maybe you're right and the Flash can’t stop you. But he doesn’t need to. I’ll destroy you.” “You.” It was not a question. “For someone claiming to be the smartest man in the world, I’m a bit worried about your memory. I said it already--I’m not here alone. But be my guest. Tell your lies. Right about now the Jury is thinking about what an embarrassment to the city Henry Allen’s trial was and how closely this resembles it… the similarities, the way the timelines don’t quite match up… “ “Really? You’re trying to convince the jury to ignore evidence and go with their hearts? A pathos appeal? That’s not going to work. There’s less than a 3% chance of that even ending in a mistrial, much less acquittal.” “I’m sure that’s what your numbers said,” Nate smiled yet again, this time sharklike. “Cute. I bet you think it’s difficult to get assigned jury duty. “ “It-- we checked all the names. We know--” “You know who they are, yes, yes. But you don’t know who we are. Another sloppy mistake. Now, the jury’s, you're right, not a total slam dunk. So, right now the prosecutor is getting word of some new evidence from a very well respected FBI agent about how helpful the Flash and Mr Allen have both been in assisting with a case against a known human trafficker--you know her, Ammunet Black. The one you bought your puppet from. FBI picked her up…mmm, ten minutes ago? And she had some very interesting things to say. You can guess what they were. Add to that the evidence--” “What evidence?” “The wire transfers between you and Ms. Black. In December and a few days ago. We didn’t even have to fake that first one, but even if the second
one looks a little fishy, the fact that--” “Nate, we got him,” crackled Eliot’s voice in his ear. “--the police just found a metahuman locked in your hall closet--Weeper, I think is what Ms. Black called him-- should make things clear. He wasn’t thrilled about having to stick around much longer but your basement is pretty hard for normal people to find so we had to nudge that a bit. But hey, you’re all for planting evidence. Anyways, court’s in ten minutes…. but the police will be arresting you in about three, if my math’s right-- care to check?-- so I can make this very quick. We have video of you threatening the Flash, holding him prisoner the same night as that wire transfer, proof of Dominic’s powers and sale--my hacker thanks you for all those cameras and bugs, by the way, made his job much easier-- and you add that all up and it sure looks like you got upset at the Flash and Allen for poking into your meta trafficking and decided a frame up was in order.” Nate hefted the folder, “and then there’s this.” “And what,” Marlize asked, shaking with rage, “ is that?” “A copy of files that will be delivered to the FBI, NSA and Dean of Husdson University if you don’t admit to the frame up.” Nate said, thumbing through them. “Proof that you, Mrs. DeVoe, fed information to certain entities across Africa and the Middle East where you were doing your research and aid work to assist in their terror attacks and human trafficking--ties in quite nicely to your work with Ammunet, if I do say so myself. And proof that the “late” Mr. DeVoe plagiarized his thesis, his dissertation, even the syllabi for his classes.” “Lies. No one will believe any of--” “Oh, it’s all very well forged. Except for the bit about the Syllabi. For shame.” Nate tutted. “And part of the dissertation. Can they take away a PH.d posthumously? Anyways, even if it wasn’t, do you really think that no one would believe a man who thinks that giving everyone on the planet late stage Alzheimer’s is going to solve famine and illness? What kind of legitimate history teacher doesn’t know about cholera or the effects of the agricultural revolution? Every lie has a kernel of truth to it.” Nate glanced at the clock on the wall. “Well, that certainly was enlightening. And before you decide to simply kill me, run your little calculations with one more variable: Eliot Spencer.” DeVoe’s brow furrowed and what little color he had drained from his face. “ That’s what I thought. Three.. Two.. one.” Nate raised his voice. “ Help! I’m in here!” The door crashed from its hinges. “The Gloat is the best part,” Parker, FBI badge swinging, put an arm over Barry’s shoulders. He stood with Iris next to her and Eliot as the DeVoes were hauled away. “You know, I think I might have to agree,” Iris said, squeezing Barry’s hand. “Or second best, at least,” she added meaningfully. “So… what now?” Joe asked. “I mean, there’s still… the red tape, but… do we need to be worried? Don’t they still have--” “Oh, that sick chair and computer set up?” Hardison asked with a smirk. “I want it.” Harry announced. “When did you get here?” Hardison asked, affronted. -- Parker held up her badge as she pushed the crate up a ramp into Lucille. “Special Agent Hagen! Let me help you with that,” Agent McSweeten said, taking the dolley handle from her. Parker beamed, patting the side, careful not to dislodge the panel on the side. “Thanks!” -- “Anyways, you can’t just call dibs. You’re too late,” Hardison added, giving Parker a fistbump. “We stole it.”

Can you do a Clark Kent x F!reader imagine inspired by the songs ‘Way Down Hadestown (Reprise)’ and ‘Flowers’ from the musical Hadestown where the reader is a friend of Clark’s that gets employed by Lex Luthor but doesn’t realize just how much of an asshole he is, so she goes to Clark with her problems and ends up getting hired by Bruce instead after Lex mysteriously fires her for some reason (Clark threatened him into it)? I know it’s a lot, so do with it what you can.
I can totally do this for you!  I had to listen to the songs because I’ve never heard the Hadestown soundtrack or see the Broadway play, so I hope I do this request justice.  TW: Swearing, Alcohol mention
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Becoming employed at LexCorp and working directly under Lex Luthor had been a dream of yours for some time now.  You had ideas that you wanted to implement and expand upon.  The one thing you hadn’t been counting on had been Lex Luthor being a complete asshole to you and everyone else.  How anyone was still employed here you had no idea, and you got the feeling that the person that had been in your position before you arrived had quit because of their treatment.
You had been there for nearly a month and had become one of Lex’s personal favorite punching bags.  He seemed to take great pleasure in torturing you and you didn’t know why.  And honestly, you had fantasized about telling Lex off and quitting, but you still believed in what you were doing.
You took the problems to your best friend Clark who was always willing to lend a listening ear.  “I should have listened to you, Clark,” you sighed as you brought him a glass of wine and sat down on the couch beside him.  He was watching you carefully, taking in how tired you looked.  “Lex is a complete and utter dick.”
Clark wanted to say I told you so, but kept his mouth shut, “Any idea why he seemed to single you out?”  Though Clark had an inkling as to why Lex seemed to be picking on you over everyone else.
“That’s the thing!  I have no idea why he would target me like this,” you leaned your head back against the couch.  “I don’t know, I just thought that I could do some good with this job and now it’s not all it’s cracked up to be.”
Clark felt bad, “Maybe something better will come along.”
You offered him a smile but didn’t comment.
The next day Clark made a trip to LexCorp.  He avoided you so that you wouldn’t know he was there and made it straight to Lex’s office.  “Ah Kent, what a pleasant surprise,” though Lex’s tone suggested that it was not a pleasant surprise at all.  “What do I owe the honor?”
“Y/N,” Clark braced his hands on Lex’s desk.  “What’s it gonna take for you to stop being a dick to her?”
“Seeing as how much it riles you up, nothing,” Lex smiled.  “Does it bother you how much of an ass I am to her?”
Clark gritted his teeth, “You’re going to fire her, Luthor.  If you’re not going to be nice and cordial as a boss should be, then get rid of her.”
Lex chuckled, “And why would I do that?”
Clark chuckled and Lex felt a chill go down his spine, “I don’t think you want to find out, Luthor.  We both know that I can make your life a living hell.”  He turned and headed for the door, “Fire her, Luthor if you know what’s good for you.”  When he was free and clear he made a call to Bruce, “I need a favor.”
“Fired,” you stammered as you sat before Lex.  “What for?!”
“It’s just not working out,” Lex said.  “You aren’t meeting my requirements and you’re dragging your division down.  I’m sorry Ms. Y/L/N, but your time at LexCorp has come to a close.”
A security guard came and escorted you to your desk.  Clearing it out you felt the eyes of your coworkers on you and you felt embarrassed.  You hadn’t done anything to subject you to being fired.  You had done everything that was required and asked, but this was Lex for you.  An ass to the very end.
You made your way to the Daily Planet to tell Clark what had happened.  You didn’t know what you needed, but you needed your best friend and maybe a pint of the good ice cream.  When you arrived you noticed that everyone seemed to be looking toward one of the conference rooms and whispering.  You located Lois and asked, “What’s going on here?”
“Bruce Wayne came by for a surprise visit,” she said in a hushed tone.  “No one knows why, but he and Clark have been talking for a while now.”
As if one queue both Bruce and Clark stepped out of the office.  “Ah Y/N!”  Clark smiled brightly when he noticed you.  “Come here, I’d like for you to meet Mr. Wayne.”
You made your way over and stuck out your hand, “It’s an honor to meet you, Mr. Wayne.”
“Please, call me Bruce,” he told you with a charming smile.  “It’s nice to meet Clark’s good friend.  He was telling me all about you.”
You chuckled, “I wish we were meeting on a better day.”
Bruce noted the box of stuff in your hands and he and Clark shared a look.  “Let me guess, Lex fired you?”  You nodded and looked at Clark, had he told Bruce about your job at LexCorp.  You knew that he and Bruce were close, but not that close.  “I’m starting a branch of Wayne Enterprises here in Metropolis, I need someone to oversee the branch.  Would you like the position, Ms. Y/L/N?”
You stood there flabbergasted, “Yes!”
“Great, we’ll meet tomorrow for lunch and go over all the details.”  He turned to Clark, “Until next time, Clark.”
“See ya, Bruce,” he said and the two of you watched him walk away.
Looking back at Clark you said, “Thank you.”
“For what?”  He tried to look innocent, but you knew.
“Just thank you,” you said.
He smiled and pulled you into his arms, “Any time, Y/N.”
After a few hours of frantically drawing and writing up the final setlist, plans, room arrangements and digging through Cal’s office to find the list of reserved tables, Y/N was finally ready to call her job done. And now to jump right back into ghostly matters, which started with finding Julie and Willie and hoping they had some sort of plan figured out.
“Hey hey, look who’s finally back from the other side!” Flynn’s exclamation was met with winces from the boys and a wry smile from Y/N, “It sure was an adventure, Cal really should organise that office. How’s decorating going?” Flynn sighed in response, “It would be a lot better if some people actually helped out instead of talking to thin air.” She sent a mock glare to Julie who sent an eye roll straight back, “Kinda dealing with bigger and more important things right now, but sure I’ll blow up a balloon right after.”
“So, how has the whole possession thing been going? Any solid way to get Cal back?” Y/N asked, anxiety crawling up the sides of her stomach. Willie looked around at the group, all of whom were fidgeting and avoiding his gaze, sighing he turned back to her, “There is a way, but there’s no guarantee it will work.” Y/N nodded, gesturing for him to continue, “You have to establish a connection first then everything after that is up to Cal and his willpower. This situation is a little different to the one these guys got themselves into, and I’ve also never seen this before so this is the best I can come up with.”
She scrunched up her brow, how on earth did you make a connection with a possessed person? And so she asked exactly that, “Do something that means something to both of you; you’re in the music business, are there any songs that you two would sing together? Something like that. Apart from making the connection, there’s not much else you can do. I’m sorry.” Willie responded, Alex rubbed his arm comfortingly, “This isn’t your fault, it’s no one's fault but Calebs.” Y/N nodded in agreement, “Exactly, you’ve been so incredibly helpful, you all have,” She looked around the group, yes that includes Flynn, and smiled, “Thanks a bunch, you guys.” Her smile quickly transformed into a smug grin, “Luckily, I know exactly which song to use.”
---
A few hours passed and Le Paradis du Chanteur was ready to go, all of the evening’s acts were either out front or preparing in the back. She had seen Julie and the guys a few times in her rushed panic to get a song ready and change the setlist last minute, everything was completely ready and fine, of course, but it didn’t stop Y/N from worrying.
All that was left was to let the guests in, find Cal and make sure the first act was ready (not in that order). She huffed as she hunted down the first act, she supposed they weren’t actually that bad – in fact she could tolerate their outfits somewhat and their music was good. The members were a little annoying but good at what they did so who was she to judge.
Their clothing was easy to spot – they do look like a pack of highlighters (as their nickname would suggest) so it took Y/N no longer than 3 minutes to find them and less than 5 to check in and see that they were practically ready to go on the spot.
Now to find Cal, a challenge she was ready to face head-on, probably. It took Y/N quite a bit longer to find him but, after asking around and getting her co-worker to point her in the right direction, she found him sitting in the kitchen, blank as ever. Y/N sighed and pulled him into the main area, hoping he would at least interact with the guests if they spoke to him.
She hoped that this evening wouldn’t turn into a disaster but who knew at this point – she walked to the entrance and put on her best smile, and went to let everyone in.
 ---
 A couple of acts had already gone and she was up next on the newly improved setlist – here goes the performance of a lifetime.
Y/N breathed out, stepping towards the mic, “Hello, everyone! I hope you’re enjoying your evening so far, we have only a few acts left to go! Before we continue, I’d just like to sing a little something in honour of our amazing manager, Cal!” A series of applause and a few whistles followed her words, Y/N relaxed, if anything went wrong at least she could say she tried. “As I’m sure some of our regulars know, Cal has always been one to enjoy a good musical, you’d hope so with this line of work.” Another ripple of laughter and a few cheers, a grin spread across her face. “When I first joined this diner as a performer, I auditioned with the song I’m about to sing for you now, I like to think of it as our song. Not to mention the fact that for at least 2 weeks after I got the job I couldn’t stop singing it, I think every one of the staff here tonight, and those who aren’t, know the song word for word now, sorry about that. So, with no further ado, I give you my audition song.” Taking the mic out of its stand, Y/N stepped back, spotting Cal sitting in the back corner, face empty of anything, as the backing music started up.
 Shake, shake, shake, Senora
Shake your body line
Shake, shake, shake, Senora
Shake it all the time
 Y/N hopped off of the stage and skipped around tables, whenever she passed a staff member she dance with them for a second, before they would both move on, quickly forming a line.
 Work, work, work, Senora
Work your body line
Work, work, work, Senora
Work it all the time
 The line quickly made its way back to the stage, everyone now singing to each other and dancing together. Y/N closed her eyes and quickly prayed that this was working. She skipped around the line, pointing at different staff members to sing the solo lines.
 My girl's name is Senora
I tell you, friends, I adore her
And when she dances, oh brother
She’s a hurricane in all kinds of weather
 She laughed as she went back to her place in the line, smiling at her co-workers beside her.
 Jump in the line, rock your body in time
(Okay, I believe you)
Jump in the line, rock your body in time
(Okay, I believe you)
 The line jumped slightly to the left every time they sang that line and then danced with the people around them, some workers went to tables and started dancing and singing with the talent scouts or any families or regulars that had booked a place that evening.
 Shake, shake, shake, Senora
(Ahh)
Work, work, work, Senora
(Ahh- Woo!)
 Y/N grabbed Sam’s hand and led them to the middle of the floor as she sang, turning to face them, trying to contain her giggles, as they did a mock opera performance.
 Cal, I know you’re listenin'
Doesn’t this just blow your mind?
I was on a mission
This is what I left behind
 She made her way over to Cal, hoping to see something behind his eyes. Y/N pulled him up by his hand and danced him over to the line of performers at the front.
 I'll miss you every day
Seek a little strange and unusual
And you will find
 The line, still acting as her incredibly enthusiastic backing vocals, started spreading out, a few stayed on the stage while others jumped off to dance and sing with the guests. Sam came over to Y/N and Cal and brought into a weird little circle dance as Noelle and Casey cackled from a nearby table.
 Life beyond all comprehension
A mess in multiple dimensions
A little unconventional, I know
 Y/N’s eyes widened in worry as Cal groaned in pain in front of her. She waved Casey over who quickly grabbed him and sat him down on a nearby, empty chair.
 But, Cal, I am home
I'm home
I'm home
 As soon as she had finished singing, Y/N rushed over to Cal. “You okay?” He grunted in return, “Been better, but then again I could probably be a lot worse.” Her breath hitched as he squeezed his eyes tight and groaned again. His breathing quickened slightly before he let out a big breath and a purple light appeared on his neck. Y/N pulled his collar down to get a better look at it but as quickly as it came it faded away again. “You doing good, Callerina?” He rolled his eyes, “I will be when you stop with those nicknames…and when Sam stops dancing like that.”
She laughed, tears pricking at her eyes, as Cal snorted at Sam’s ridiculous dancing, they were completely embarrassing Noelle as they forced her to waltz around the room. “I thought they said they were a professional dancer when I hired them. Oh well.” He turned to face Y/N, the twinkle back in his eyes, “I thought my return would be more dramatic, I’ll be honest. But this is alright too.” Y/N rubbed at her eyes as she scoffed at him, “Of course, only you would say this wasn’t dramatic enough.” Cal shrugged, “Well when you reach old age, like me, you’ll learn that even bending down takes a lot of effort, might as well make it worth the trouble.” Y/N rolled her eyes, “Cal, you’re 31. You’re not that old.” He sniffed in response, “I watched you grow into the ghostbuster that you’ve become, didn’t I? I think that’s old enough.” She scoffed, though a fond smile played on the edges of her lips, “Well, since you ruined our nice moment I might as well get back to orders and making sure all of our acts are okay.” Cal’s eyes widened at that, “I forgot, I’m so sorry you had to do that all alone, I’ll let you steal anything you want from the diner kitchen after this as a sorry and thank you gift.” She grinned, “As if I wasn’t gonna do that already.”
Y/N walked away, giggling to herself as she heard Cal squawk in indignation behind her. This was totally worth it, she had her family back and a new family as well.
 ---
 It was now the end of the night, lots of people were ordering the last things to eat or drink or finishing up what they already had before they left. All performers were out on the floor, taking orders, entertaining young children or talking to talent scouts if they had the time. It was the noisiest it had been all evening, even with all the bands and music, performance and dancing that had occurred.
Julie awkwardly stood on stage, fiddling with the mic stand. “Excuse me? Hi. Um, so I know this is kinda weird and short notice but one of our band members has a message for a special someone so we hope you enjoy.” She steps back from the mic and moves over to the keyboard towards the front corner of the performance area, Reggie practically vibrated behind the mic whilst the other two musketeers glared at him to chill out before he caused the mic to screech.
The audience had quietened down and now sat in expectant silence, Y/N continued serving, though the short notice act did seem to capture most of her attention (albeit confused stares but her attention nonetheless). Reggie took a few deep breaths, readying himself to poof and basically confess his newfound feelings to a living girl who captured his undead heart, wanting what you can’t have really had been taken to that level, huh.
Julie’s fingers danced across the keyboard as Reggie poofed in and strummed along on the acoustic guitar Julie had pried from Luke’s cold, dead hands, he had wanted to keep the song simple, strip it down to its purest form, mirroring his feelings. That and the fact that he had done this last minute and dragged everyone around him into it, so showing off and using flashy techniques was something they just didn’t have the time to add in.
 When we know something is true
Beyond question or doubt
There's no particular point
In pointing it out
 Reggie strums his guitar, looking solely at either the guitar or the mic, trying to gather up his courage. He wrote this song for Y/N, why couldn’t he just look at her?
 Blue is the colour of sky
'Cause mothers all worry
And old people die
A phone rings, a bee stings
It's something you don't need to hear
It's just clear
 He looked back at Julie, finding her smiling at him encouragingly. He smiled back at her in return. He could do this!
 Why go stating the obvious?
It's so painfully obvious
How could you miss
Something that's this plain to see?
When it's glaring and staring
Right at you
So obviously
 He looked up to meet Y/N’s eyes, she had stopped moving around after handing out her last order, instead, she stood staring at him, completely awestruck. He almost chuckled, how could she stare at him like he hung the stars when she was brighter than the sun?
 When you get bored you draw stars
On the cuffs of your jeans
You still fill out the quizzes you find
In those teen magazines
And you dance like nobody's there
Awkward and perfect
You don't even care
Something courageous, amazing, contagious
And kind
All combined
 Y/N huffed out breathy laughs as she stared at him, the stupid, leather-covered, ghost boy. She knew she hadn’t fallen in love – she hadn’t fallen anywhere, she had walked into her feelings, completely aware and content. He made it easy, Y/N hoped she made it easy too.
 Why go stating the obvious?
It's so painfully obvious
How could you miss
Something that's this plain to see?
When it's glaring and staring
Right at you
So obviously
 Sam grabbed her by the hand and pulled her towards the stage until she was right in front of it – right in front of him, “Have fun with your Romeo, don’t forget about us when you’re off on dates.” They cackled as they ran away, narrowly avoiding Y/N’s punches.
 Sometimes the words
We tend to withhold
But they're exactly the words
Someone needs to be told
But oh, thinking they know
We never say "I love you
I love you
I love you
I love you"
 Y/N smiled up at him as he beckoned her onto the stage. She never thought when she took up this part of the job that she’d end up meeting a bunch of ghosts and their human companion + friend, have her manager be possessed and garner feelings for the golden retriever incarnate.
 'Cause why go
Stating the obvious
It's so painfully obvious
How could you miss
Something that's this plain to see?
When it's glaring, and staring right at you
So obviously
 As the song quieted down, Julie shared looks with Alex and Luke pretended like he wasn’t tearing up at the sight of the pair on stage. Sam and Noelle smiled at each other and Casey rolled her eyes, she truly was surrounded by idiots that she had somehow adopted, not that she regretted it necessarily but she would never admit it.
“Hey, Y/N,” Reggie stepped away from the mic, “I’m not in love with you or anything, but I think I could be if you’d be okay with that?” The girl in question chuckled, “I think I could love you too, eventually. But how about we get to know each other for longer than a week first, sound good?”
“Sounds perfect, Diner Gal.”
I listened to if then recently and I'm CONFUSED. I also watched a bootleg wich didn't help since I'm not really good in English and the bootlegs have bad audio quality. Do you have tips how I can understand it? Or can you explain it?
It seems like a cool musical and I wanna understand it so badly!!!
if you want me to explain it, i'd be happy to :)
(when i first watched it, i only understood some of the dialogue but i didn't know about the libretto so i just browsed the tumblr tag and hoped for the best lmao.)
i'd recommend reading the libretto of the musical if you want the exact dialogue, lyrics, and locations.
@ifthenslashers has it linked in their pinned post (thank you for that, by the way💙. your resources are very helpful :))
but the libretto is very long, so i'll try to summarize it best i can(under the cut).
i hope this is helpful!
elizabeth vaughn moves back to new york city after divorcing her husband oren after 12 years. as he's waiting for her, her best friend (and ex-boyfriend this is relevant), lucas talks to this kindergarten teacher, who walked up to him and started talking to him. when elizabeth comes to the park(they're meeting in a park), both lucas and kate(the kindergarten teacher) walk up to her. it turns out that kate is elizabeth's neighbor. kate asks elizabeth to go with her and meet new romantic prospects, have fun. she calls her liz. lucas(a housing activist) asks elizabeth to come with him to meet the other members of the new york citizens for change and to go to his street action in the subway. he calls her beth. this is where the timelines diverge.
liz-verse (liz chooses kate):
so liz goes with kate to get coffee. josh barton, an army doctor who just came back from his second tour, walks up to liz. he awkwardly flirts with her. liz gets a call from a number with the area code (347). she doesn't recognize it so she doesn't pick it up. josh asks for liz's number, liz says it's a new number so she doesn't know it, josh asks her if she believes in fate, she says she doesn't, she walks away. ("what if?")
the next day, liz, kate, and anne (kate's girlfriend) are on the way to brooklyn on the subway. the subway car stops for a bit due to a street action (lucas's group's). the three talk about men, and kate keeps pointing out different men on the subway. josh(also on the subway) walks up to liz. again awkwardly flirts. he's from nebraska(are any falsettos mutual reading this? if so, you know exactly what i'm thinking of lmao). kate conducts an instant public poll about fate and whether liz should take josh's number. liz eventually gives in and takes josh's number. ("it's a sign")
over the course of the next few days? weeks? kate sets liz up on various blind dates. during one of them, liz sees josh in the distance. she runs up to him and hugs him in a last-ditch attempt to end that date. she pretends josh is a very old friend of hers, josh plays along. it's been three times that the two met now. josh asks liz out, she says yes, they go on a date that very evening. they end it at liz's apartment("map of new york"). liz expresses her apprehension with...relationships due to the probabilities. josh basically says "you never know"(bc that's the name of the song) and you can never really tell what's going to happen. ("you never know")
soon, josh and liz go on a date to a baseball game(yes, my dear falsettos mutuals, that is absolutely correct). kate, anne, and lucas tag along. soon enough, josh and liz set lucas up with josh's best friend, david. lucas and david hit it off. ("ain't no man manhattan")
liz and josh hang out in liz's apartment, again. josh reveals that he was on the way to the airport when he was on the subway that day and he didn't go back to nebraska bc of her. they make out, liz runs into the bathroom to get her shit together, they....do the do.("what the fuck?").
the next morning, they wake up. they talk about their relationship. they say "i love you".("here i go")
in a few weeks?(by my best estimation), it's liz's birthday! lucas sees liz pouring her champagne out of her glass and confronts her about it. he and david find out she's pregnant. david asks lucas to move in. he says yes. liz tells josh about the pregnancy. kate proposes to anne. she says yes. josh proposes to liz. she says yes. ("surprise")
a c t t w o
josh and liz get married! ("this day/walking by a wedding")
liz is pregnant(duh). she reads in the newspaper that the idiot mayor's nephew's incompetence with city planning cost the life of a child. josh sings about his excitement for a kid, they have their first son, jake. ("hey kid")
time skip some two years.
liz and josh had a second kid, cooper. lucas and david are babysitting jake. lucas is riding on a skateboard with the stroller. liz is (justifiably) bewildered. david's like he's belted in and has a helmet, he's safe. liz and jake go back home, bc liz is free due to spring break(she teaches urban planning in a uni) and josh is on days.
david talks to lucas about having a kid. lucas is apprehensive because...reasons. they sing "best worst mistake" which is objectively the cutest song in the whole show. they say "i love you" to each other for the first time. ("best worst mistake")
josh gets deployed. liz is mad, she tells him to quit. he says he can't. soon enough, he has to go. after some time, some officers come to liz's door, tell her josh died due to an rpg attack on the medical facility. lucas helps her with the kids, she tells him to go, stay with david. ("i hate you")
(sidenote: i'm on the verge of tears rn bc i'm speedrunning the whole musical in my head. sorry.)
liz is grieving for josh. ("you learn to live without")
the gang(minus anne) goes to josh's funeral. it turns out kate and anne divorced because anne was cheating on kate. kate and lucas ask liz about giving josh an honor guard. she says that he wanted to be cremated and have his remains scattered over the platte river in nebraska(who even knew there was a river in nebraska?). david says that he's imagined his life without josh the past few weeks: josh was his best friend, he introduced him to the man he loves, etc. he asks liz that if she met josh the next day while still knowing that she would lose him, would she avoid taking that chance to avoid the loss, or take the chance anyways? ("what would you do?"). lucas, kate, and david go to get the car. liz has a revelation, of sorts. she promises josh to "start over" with her life every day, and, in a sense, not wallow in the what-might-be's("always starting over").
time skip a few months. liz meets stephen(you'll find out who he is, soon enough) and his wife cathy. he offers her a job in the department of city planning. she takes it. lucas and david are walking in the park with their kid, huck, in the background. lucas walks up to liz, sits down, they talk. lucas reveals he's always been a bit in love with her, liz is surprised. they are the brotp and i love them. ("what if?(reprise)")
the end.
beth-verse(beth chooses lucas):
beth gets a call, area code (347). lucas informs her it's the nyc area code. she picks up. it's stephen, one of beth's old friends from grad school. he offers her a job under him as deputy director of city planning. lucas tells her not to go because he doesn't like stephen and he thinks a job with the city does not make enough of an impact. beth and lucas reminisce about their college days. lucas kisses beth. josh, who is seen walking toward beth in the background, walks away. beth recoils. it's all awkward. beth says she'll still come to the street action. ("what if?")
lucas and beth get bench warrants because of the street action.
beth goes to meet stephen. she's a bit hesitant at first bc she doesn't have experience. but she interviews for the job and she gets it. kate sets beth up on numerous blind dates. on one of them, she discreetly texts lucas to help her out. he comes, she runs up to him and hugs him, the date takes his leave. lucas and beth head to lucas's apartment. beth gets a text from stephen. lucas is still miffed about beth taking a city job. lucas tells her it's a bad idea to get involved with the boss. beth denies that she is in the first place. ("map of new york")
time skip. a couple weeks.
the nycc is protesting the redevelopment of the far west side (bc,,, gentrification). a project that, coincidentally, beth is working on.
beth and stephen go to a baseball game. stephen asks beth to convince lucas to back down from the project. beth does so by promising lucas to introduce him to an editor she knows if he backs down from the project.
time skip, the project is a success. ("ain't no man manhattan")
a few weeks? later, stephen comes to beth's place with some plans. she kisses him. he kisses back. he leaves bc he's married. beth calls lucas, who comes right by.
beth and lucas hook up. ("what the fuck?")
beth tells lucas she's sent in her resignation. he tells her that even though he despises stephen, this cannot be the reason that she quits.
lucas wants to know the status of their relationship, beth claims it was purely a one-time thing. lucas tells her he loves her even if she doesn't love him back and that he will always be there for her. ("you don't need to love me")
beth goes to work. she hires a young grad, elena. kate comes in, tells her that she's her kindergarten class's american hero. stephen comes to beth with the resignation, she rips it up. stephen asks beth to do the speech for the project bc the deputy mayor resigned and he has to step up (which means beth is the new director of city planning! yay!). ("no more wasted time")
it's beth's birthday! beth, kate, anne, elena, and lucas have a small get together. when lucas is off getting the cake, the girls find out that beth is pregnant(because...lucas). beth is confused bc she doesn't know what to do with the pregnancy and the job opportunity. elena tells her to follow what she wants to do. lucas is smashed. he asks beth to move in with him. she refuses. he proposes. again, she refuses. ("surprise")
(it is implied that kate proposes to anne here as well)
a c t. t w o
beth walks by a wedding and contemplates shit about weddings.("this day/walking by a wedding") she aborted the pregnancy.
beth is babysitting elena's kid. elena tells beth that she's moving with her husband to oregon. beth is upset because elena reminds her a lot of herself.
2.5 years after the end of act one, we see lucas in the park. he has published his book. a young woman(paulette) comes up to him, asks for an autograph, implies he's old, you know how it goes. beth walks up to lucas. we learn that lucas has avoided all contact with beth bc he had to grapple with the fact that she aborted the fetus. lucas asks beth if she had, at least, thought about the possibility of the two having a kid together. the two contemplate various alternate universes. beth asks if they can still stay friends. lucas wonders if this was his last chance at love. he walks away. he almost runs into a bicyclist—david. ("some other me")
beth is at an awards ceremony preparing to receive an award. stephen comes to say hi. he asks her to come work with him in albany. beth refuses. we learn that stephen has divorced his wife, cathy. ("map of new york(reprise)")
(ok i'm crying again one sec)
beth learns to cope with being alone(romantically).("you learn to live without")
she goes on a flight to london, which has to make an emergency landing in maine. kate decides to divorce anne because she was flirting with someone else(and kate thinks anne doesn't love her anymore). beth calls lucas, and they mend their friendship.("the moment explodes")
lucas tells beth that kate and anne are getting divorced. beth rushes to the bookstore where the two are dealing with the papers. she convinces them not to get divorced. ("love while you can")
a few weeks later, beth, lucas, kate, and anne meet in the park. kate won the nyc teacher of the year award. beth is planning to run for the city council. josh, who just returned from his third tour overseas, walks up to beth. he says hi, asks her out. she says yes, but her friends are waiting for her. lucas and kate pretend to be engrossed in their own thing. beth agrees to go on a date with josh that very day. ("what if?(reprise)")
the end.
