German Literature in English Translation

World War I and World War II have had the biggest impacts on German Literature and Culture since the twentieth century. For four years, from the 28 of July 1914 until the 18 of November 1918, Germany fought alongside Austria-Hungary and Turkey against France, Great Britain, Russia, Italy, Japan and the United States in World War I. World War I began after the assassination of Austrian, Franz Ferdinand, by a Serbian nationalist. The war began as a way to avenge the murder of Franz Ferdinand. The war ended with the creation of the Treaty of Versailles. Then, on September 1, 1939, World War II began. World War II lasted six years, until the 2 of September 1945. The war began with Germany unprovocally attacking Poland. Britain and France declared war on Germany when Hitler refused to abort his attack on Poland. There is an estimated 45,000,000 worldwide civilian deaths that occurred throughout WWII. The war ended with an unconditional surrender from the axis powers. World War I had a tremendous impact on German literature and culture. This can be noted from the melancholic tone of many literature works and pieces throughout the time of WWI. The culture began to change as Germany was facing an economic downfall. The country was dirt poor, and were being forced to pay millions upon millions for what damage was caused during the first world war. This led Germany to become resentful as hyperinflation began. The resentment and economic turmoil is believed to have been the reason for the rise of the Nazi party. As the Nazi party rose, it would forever change German culture and literature. The culture, in a sense, disappeared. The only works permitted were those of glorification of the Nazi state, Adolf, the aryan race, etc. Literature that did not agree with these ideals were burned in book burnings. Germany suffered a great loss of literature and culture due to the result of World War II.                   

All Quiet on the Western Front is a novel that depicts war and wartime society objectively. Unfortunately, this was the reality of many soldiers in the past, and even today. Soldiers are not able to decide their fate. They work in a battalion and have to do what is best for the battalion. They are not able to just think about themselves, their own life; they have to think about each person in their battalion. War is not a you live and you die situation. You never know when you are going to die, you can’t predict it; if you could, there wouldn’t be casualties in a war. Whether they are heros or noble victims, well, that’s up to the reader and how one chooses to interpret it. Personally, if somebody puts their own life on the line to save you, damn straight they are a hero. The novel title is a negative definition. The title stems not from physical silence, but rather the silence between the men. In other words, the soldiers, in a way of saying, turn off their emotions to focus on the war. There isn’t time to process complex emotions, therefore, these emotions are sealed off, resulting in emotional silence. The title all quiet refers to the emotional silence rather than the physical silence throughout the war.

Borchert’s techniques are confusing to analyze. Throughout his four short stories The Kitchen clock, The Rats Do Sleep Nights, Three Dark Kings & The Bread, it can be confusing to follow along. The stories aren’t written that strongly. There seems to be an overall plot, but it can be hard to follow along and there isn’t really structure to the stories. Overall, the stories seem jumbled. This can be related to the post-WWII destruction of Germany. The country was in a catastrophe, there wasn’t a lot of order; the country was in a turmoil. These stories reflect post-WWII Germany. The war took a toll on the people. Throughout each story, there are mentions of how even though people are young, they appear a lot older than they actually are. In The Kitchen Clock, a man is described as having a really old face, but it’s noticeable that he is only really about twenty. In The Bread, the two characters think about how each other looks very old. Despite being old, the two characters make note that they look even older. Overall, the characters physical appearance, along with their attitude can reflect the culture of Germany from post-WWII Germany. The characters are happy about tiny things, but at the same time, fear such small things. Such as lies (The Bread), happiness over small things (The Kitchen Clock). 

The Inkheart trilogy can relate to other works we have read for various reasons. Throughout the semester, we have read a wide variety of Germanic literature that encompasses an array of topics and genres. In the Inkheart trilogy, there is a wide-use of magic, mysticism and fantasy. We have read stories that contain fairies, sorcerers, magic tears, witches, talking animals, etc. Overall, in German literature, there is a wide variety of stories surrounding the genre of mysticism and fantasy. In the Inkheart trilogy, nothing is lacking. The main characters are magical themselves. There are water-nymphs and fairies. The Inkheart trilogy is able to relate to other works we have read throughout the semester due to the inclusion of mysticism and fantasy elements. 

To an extent, yes; German literature has made a significant impact on modern works and cultures. Honestly, I would have to say the most prevalent, and only, examples are the modern-animated film adaptations. Even after the impact of the modern-animated films, these stories continue to be retold in even newer live-action movies. German literature has had such an impact on the film industry. To just name a few of the most popular movies that stem from German literature...there is Cinderella, Snow White, Tangled, and Sleeping Beauty. These movies, adapted from their German counterparts into new, fresh, sometimes different, stories have shaped not just American, but worldwide culture. These modern adaptations, which are extremely popular, are shown to kids from a young age, and are also loved by people who are nearing the end of their life. The Grimm tales have played an extremely important part in modern works and culture. German literature has also greatly affected the stereotypes surrounding modern Germany. As an American (can’t speak for the rest of the world), most of us grow up believing that Germany is a harsh, strict, unloving society. Due to old German literature, it’s obvious to see where these stereotypes and beliefs originate. In short stories such as, The Elf King, Hope, When Numbers and Figures no Longer, The Broken Ring, and other similar stories, there is a melancholic tone that drags throughout each story. In other words, death of children, infidelity, death in general, depression; these are all extremely common themes throughout historic German literature. So, how do these historic stories affect modern culture? These stories build a base for what foreigners think, believe, and know about German society. If their literature is performed in this sense, there must be ties between their literature and culture. These stories acted as a stepping stone for the way the world would view German society, and those beliefs and points of views have not completely vanquished from modern society. 

My favorite work of the semester was All Quiet on the Western Front. I enjoy literature. Throughout the semester, we read an array of short stories that couldn’t really be expanded on, where the reader must analyze and look into the story to understand the deeper meaning. However, why is that so important? The excerpts that were read from All Quiet on the Western Front are one of the only actual book passages that we read throughout the semester. It was refreshing to be able to have a plot with themes, characters, settings, that didn’t have to be analyzed to the core to be able to understand the actual meaning or purpose. 

My least favorite work of the semester was The Metamorphosis. I feel as if there were no actual plot to the story. A man turns into a bug. Overall, it’s unrealistic. Stories should be able to capture the reader's attention, however, The Metamorphosis just seemed to drag on with the idealizations of a human becoming a bug. It seems unordinary and the story was weird. There is no actual plot. The beginning was boring, the middle was unnecessary, and the ending was predictable. The whole story, his family is disgusted by him. In the end, they are happy when he dies. It takes too long to get to the point of the story, and the ending was just a blow.
