How I teach the Iliad in highschool:

I’ve taught the Iliad for over a decade, I’m literally a teacher, and I can even spell ‘Iliad’, and yet my first instinct when reading someone’s opinions about it is not to drop a comment explaining what it is, who ‘wrote’ it, and what that person’s intention truly was.

The first thing I do when I am teaching the Iliad is talk about what we know, what we think we know, and what we don’t know about Homer:

We know -

- 0

We think we know -

- the name Homer is a person, possibly male, possibly blind, possibly from Ionia, c.8th/9th C BCE.

- composed the Iliad and Odyssey and Hymns

We don’t know -

- if ‘Homer’ was a real person or a word meaning singer/teller of these stories

- which poem came first

- whether the more historical-sounding events of these stories actually happened, though there is evidence for a similar, much shorter, siege at Troy.

And then I get out a timeline, with suggested dates for the ‘Trojan war’ and Iliad and Odyssey’s estimated composition date and point out the 500ish years between those dates. And then I ask my class to name an event that happened 500 years ago.

They normally can’t or they say ‘Camelot’, because my students are 13-15yo and I’ve sprung this on them. Then I point out the Spanish Armada and Qu. Elizabeth I and Shakespeare were around then. And then I ask how they know about these things, and we talk about historical record.

And how if you don’t have historical record to know the past, you’re relying on shared memory, and how that’s communicated through oral tradition, and how oral tradition can serve a second purpose of entertainment, and how entertainment needs exciting characteristics.

And we list the features of the epic poems of the Iliad and Odyssey: gods, monsters, heroes, massive wars, duels to the death, detailed descriptions of what armour everyone is wearing as they put it on. (Kind of like a Marvel movie in fact.)

And then we look at how long the poems are and think about how they might have been communicated: over several days, when people would have had time to listen, so at a long festival perhaps, when they’re not working. As a diversion.

And then I tell them my old and possibly a bit tortured simile of ‘The Pearl of Myth’:

And after all that, I hand a student at the front a secret sentence written on a piece of paper, and ask them to whisper it to the person next to them, and for that person to whisper it to the next, and so on. You’ve all played that game.

And of course the sentence is always rather different at the end than it was at the start, especially if it had Proper nouns in it (which tend to come out mangled). And someone’s often purposely changed it, ‘to be funny’.

And we talk about how this is a very loose metaphor for how stories and memory can change over time, and even historical record if it’s not copied correctly (I used to sidebar them about how and why Boudicca used to be known as ‘Boadicea’ but they just know the former now, because Horrible Histories exists and is awesome)

And after all that, I remind them that what we’re about to read has been translated from Ancient Greek, which was not exactly the language it was first written down in, and now we’re reading it in English.

And that’s how my teenaged students know NOT TO TAKE THE ILIAD AS FACT.

my n obsession is like so so funny when i think about it. i played thru pokemon black the entire summer (fall ig i thought it was summer but its always hot in georgia) of 2010, when i was nine and super depressed and felt awful, but playing that game everywhere i could bring my ds lite made me feel so happy. when i got to n's room in the castle i was like. wow. wow wow just like me???? little guy stuck in his room all the time??? didnt have any contact with people outside his family ??

idk looking back on it is very. hmmmm yes i, the weird homeschooled kid that hated their only interaction w other people was going to the grocery store, library, or bowling alley (my mom took me to these places once a month-2 months. i didnt start seeing ppl regularly until i took group art and math classes at 11-13) identified with the weird (super super cool. i was made fun of by an older kid at the bowling alley who previously would play pokemon w me bc i said i liked n) character who talked to animals n didnt connect w or understand other people easily who was locked in his home by his parental figure. idk i love n and I think hes really great and he and characters like crona soul eater were ones i connected and identified with strongly as a child. wonder why lol

hii! since you're talking about comics, what are your favorites? do you have any reading recs? :)

hi sibe!! and now despite my ranting, this is where we remember i have a very basic taste bc im a big superhero lover and am very bad at making sure to read Not Superhero 😭 and am an enjoyer of popular hero stories as well alas... what can we do... im the fakest comic fan who also forgets to read comics but god am i a warrior for what I have read

however, some of my faves are batman: the long halloween, the 2000 run of batgirl with cassandra cain holding the mantle (she is one of my favorite characters ever period), alan moore's swamp thing, the sandman, bendis and waid daredevil like everyone else... i have more than I can't remember and also am unsure if I wanna put in my faves bc I just really like em but don't know if I'd call em faves!

now, onto my recs! of which some will fall under as single issue stories, some of these come from the required reading i did for my comics history course 0_0

- young justice (1998) (i love bart allen so so dearly nobody even gets it)

- kyle rayner's go as gl in green lantern (1990) but this is because i see kyle rayner as me if i was a man in both the best and worst ways possible

- Batgirl 2000 for the love of it all bc I love Cass so so much also I'm just gonna say this is me saying all my faves are also recs

- In this regard special shout out to Swamp Thing #53 from Alan Moore

- Alan Moore's Miracle Man (this is a rather heavy one from what I know, and this is where I say my teacher had us read an issue close to the end I think? for our required reading with none of the previous story context. But it's a heavy one. I don't know how present the other things through the begining or beyond story are but I will give a big warning for sexual assault, along with homophobia, racism, abuse, and I'm sure other things because this is Alan Moore and he writes what he writes)

- The issue "Who Killed Myndi Mayer?" from George Perez's run of Wonder Woman. Great standalone, but I hear his run is really awesome in general and I really wanna check it out still!

- Kimi wa Petto/Tramps Like Us is a josei manga I personally really enjoyed! Also can you tell I can barely remember the non superhero stuff I've read despite knowing I've read other stuff I used to read a lot of manga but ummm there is nothing going on in my brain man I promise I have read other stuff 😭

However I'll put some honorary mentions of stuff I've enjoyed: Dixon's Nightwing, Birds of Prey, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure but I feel like I can't recommend this one in good faith, Binky Brown Meets the Holy Virgin Mary (this is a comic about religious ocd and sex, so go into knowing it is not lighthearted and also this is part of the underground comix scene which I always feel says a lot in one go), I SAW IT by Keiji Nakazawa (I saw one page of this in class so I can't say much I haven't even read read it but I almost started weeping from it, it's from the perspective of the author if I recall correctly about surviving the nuking of Hiroshima), 90s Starman, Dick Grayson's run as Batman, as a general Entertain Comics has fun stuff check out their horror and ok I promise I'll be done here

ok but. can anyone explain the “slade wilson” thing to me. because correct me if i’m wrong but based on everything i can find he is The Most irredeemable bastard ever to besmirch the already-dubious pages of comic book morality

like, fanon is as valid as canon when it comes to DC comics, we all know this, but just. look okay, here are my notes on him as he appears in canon:

deathstroke, aka slade wilson: wow bootlicker. okay

while actively fighting in the vietnam war, volunteered for experimental army program, reapplied to keep fighting after he eventually woke up from the coma it sent him into (“it gave me super strength tho officer”) & was depressed by the Lack Of Purpose he felt after he was denied the honour of fighting. in fuckin vietnam.

(VIETNAM. THIS MAN IS ALREADY AN IMPERIALIST WAR CRIMINAL AND THAT’S HIS PRE-VILLAIN STORY)

wife adeline kane, also an army general, privately trained him in guerilla warfare (this is fine) & they then got married. she got pregnant, he went to vietnam, baby grant was born; he came back (super-soldier-serumed up), she got pregnant, baby joey was born

after he got kicked out of the military he decided to satisfy his thirst for blood by becoming a “world famous safari hunter” (by day; by night he killed people) until some of the enemies he made broke into adeline’s house & kidnapped joey. kidnapper (“the jackal”) demanded some info on a client of slade’s, he refused bc he figured he could get to his kid in time (and everyone knows the US doesn’t negotiate) and was incorrect: joey’s throat got slashed, wrecking his vocal cords for good. adeline was so angry he’d endangered their son that she shot him in the face, which is how he lost his eye

(he learned nothing from this experience)

in conclusion: this man is a bastard with exactly zero redeeming characteristics. i hope he goes to he*k

he’s also. not a good dad. idk if “got his child’s throat slashed with his arrogance” doesn’t tell u what’s up but how about deliberately getting ur daughter’s adoptive family murdered so u can groom her into an assassin & pump her full of psychoactive drugs without her knowledge or consent? how’s that for fatherhood

i do love his kids tho, don’t get me wrong. he just, very evidently does Not. supplemental notes on Those fucked up relationships below the cut (bc i have a Lot to say about this):

rose wilson:

mom = prostitute (half-siblings with Joey [later aka Jericho] and Grant, both of whom die offscreen due to see below)

was discovered by an enemy of deathstroke when said enemy was off killing the extended deathstroke family. hostage situation, yadda yadda, slade won’t touch her bc his sons just died for someone else’s vendetta & “I’m Too Dangerous To Be Around” syndrome

but then like a year later he. anonymously hired The Same Guy to kill Rose’s adopted family. for bonding.

This Seems Like A Fun Dynamic

kidnaps her (“you’re all i have left”), manipulates her into murdering the guy He Secretly Hired & takes her on as his apprentice (Rose adopts username Ravager)

deathstroke secretly starts injecting her with performance-enhancing drugs that cause her to experience psychosis

Tries to force her to kill her half-bro Jericho (also Slade’s kid) while he (in evil undead ghost form) was possessing the body of her friend (ur kid, ur other kid, who is the first kid’s half-bro and also currently ur kid’s friend? that’s Four strikes At Once my dude)

she does not do so, because she is a human child

*but* to prove that she’s still loyal, she carves out one of her eyes. to match slade.

i am really struggling to see how ppl consider this man redeemable

anyway slade gives her a kryptonite eye prosthetic and tells her to kill superman

dick (who’s pretending to be evil at the time & is acting as rose’s caretaker bc dad can’t be bothered) talks her down and also lets her know that kryptonite is carcinogenic/radioactive

she is furious & finally cuts ties w slade

joins titans under tim’s leadership, bonds w kid devil in particular & shows herself to be brash & aggressive to compensate for transparent insecurity. Wonder Girl (cassie i think) is also in her corner

eventually ends up also bonding w damian. shared assassin trauma ig

oh yeah rose is psychic. btw. that’s a thing she can do

 precognitive w/ visions & dreams

dramatic titans showdown (raven is on the run with a USB stick that has a dead half-brother on it; accuses team of having a traitor, yada yadda, traitor turns out to be bombshell)

results in the resurrection of Rose’s previously undead (ghost-flavour) half-brother, Jericho, aka Joseph, aka Joey.

They’re friends <3

anyway now if u want to write rose &/or joey wilson content here, u now have some canon-sourced footnotes to kick off of. please write rose & joey content. i am desperate for some sympathetic depictions of these poor siblings that also fully punish slade for his whole odious deal, that’s my wish fulfillment and i have too much chronic illness to write it myself (i am Once Again Asking for extremely specific fandom content that is not created by me)

i found the interview where he talks about orion in MM and im like bro you should not have been allowed to write new gods ever. fucking awful. not even mentioning how bad his lightray characterization is or how dirty he did the other new gods/forever ppl

how do you read new gods and not know orion is older than scott??? he lived on apokolips! he was locked away alone/alone w granny/w his mom (depending on canon) for ~10 years before scott was even born. i think theres maybe 1 recap where they had him as a baby instead but got retconned within the same comic? (i think it was the same sequence that made lightray waaaaay younger which they also retconned within the same run) ( i have to reread new gods in full ) (honeslty i might even just be thinking abt the backstory n kings directors cut)

i have a few more orion issues to read (and a lot of scotts....) not to mention when have orion and scott ever.... actually fought........ like outside of idk - the pre crisis dream sequence scott has? and orions never to my knowledge ever implied scott hasnt suffered or wont understand (something he has gotten angry at another character over (lightray))

scott expresses that he respects orion. he defends orions obsession w defeating his father when helena wayne makes a Comment. in the JLI-tie in segment of mr miracle vol 2 orion brings up that scott is technically his brother but they never got to know eachother but wants to build that relationship. not to mention the end of the orion solo

like most i can think of orion questions scotts decision to give up godhood one point but simply tells him he doesnt understand. and scott at the very end of DotNG like does believe orion is the killer but immediately realizes his perceptions were being manipulated/the “evidence” was bullshit (and earlier in the comic snapped at clark&gideon for implying orion would betray them at all.... and thats from the writer who made orion a massive cunt in the first place)

ANYWAY i would like to see orion and scott be brothers again i really hate the interpretation that they hate eachother i think they have one of the most interesting sibling relationships in dc and i wish more writers actually cared about the new genesis new gods

i’ll be the first to admit i’m not nice collector. i’ve written more than enough comics about it in my different comics. they always act like they are going to spend the most money ever at our stores, but they don’t. they buy a few cars and that’s it. then they throw huge fits if we don’t have time to go to the back to pull a dollar product. my store stopped selling sports card for a long time because a costumer stabbed someone over the cards in another one of our stores. yes i’ll go in the back and help someone buy a $600 tv. we don’t keep those on the floor. if you want a dollar car you’ll have to wait till we pull them and bring them out. and if the shelf is full there is no way i’m going to bring more out. the sad thing is i’m a collector of things too. i have a massive comic collection and a small action figure collection. if somethings not on the floor i just deal. i don’t throw a fit. sorry for the long rant, but sometimes i just get mad about how collectors feel it’s my job to get their cheap toys out will i’m trying to do the work of three people because my employer won’t schedule enough employees. they have to cut that payroll to make their bonuses.

A thing I love

I have no idea what reputation Winston Rowntree has on the larger internet, but I’ve been reading Subnormality for years and years. And I just want to gush about how much I love them. They all have just an unreasonable amount of reading to them, few of the characters are even named, the plots basically boil down to “shit happens to people who probably don’t deserve it but think they do,” unless it’s a stunningly concise and interesting short story that happens in one comic that still takes a goddamn eon to load because he’s the only one who took Scott McCloud’s “infinite canvas” thing seriously.

*gasp*

My very favorite one is titled “Subnormality Tells The Truth”

It incorporates most of the main characters from the comics while still being fairly legible to people who haven’t followed them through their arcs and growth. It has at least four “Fuck yeah!” moments, at least three “...oh fuck” moments, and a dozen or so “awwww!” moments. I have at least three panels specifically clipped on my phone to look at sometimes. It’s just great.

Thing is, I doubt anyone else will read this, because I have wacky taste. It’s so good, and I highly advocate for people to go back to the beginning and read the whole comic (there’s like 230 which is real small for a comic that’s been going on so long), but I also know that some of those strips can take like a half hour to read at least. Hell the one I mentioned probably takes about an hour. And not everyone is down for confessional/slice of life/bizarre humor.

So you should also check out People Watching which is an animated series he did with Cracked right before they went under that incorporates a different set of characters but has background references to the comic and has a very similar “way too personal confessions along with a dose of social commentary” tone to it. I adore every episode.

Anyway, these things are real special to me, and I just wanted to talk about them for a second, thanks for tuning in.
