Meaning of name: Qianlong = Qian [alternative name for Guizhou] dragon [in Chinese]; shouhu = guarding [in Chinese]

Age: Early Jurassic (Sinemurian?)

Where found: Ziliujing Formation, Guizhou, China

How much is known: Three partial skeletons of adult individuals and five clutches of 3–16 eggs containing embryos.

Notes: Qianlong was an early sauropodomorph. It is notable not only for the exceptional preservation of its fossils, but also the fact that these specimens appear to be associated with nests, thus offering valuable information on their growth and reproductive behavior. As has also been found for some early sauropodomorphs, such as Massospondylus from the Early Jurassic of Southern Africa and Mussaurus from the Early Jurassic of Argentina, Qianlong appears to have laid its eggs in breeding colonies with adult individuals potentially watching over their nests. Qianlong was additionally similar to these other early sauropodomorph in being bipedal as an adult, but likely quadrupedal as a young juvenile.

Rigid, hard-shelled eggs have been found in multiple groups of dinosaurs, including tetanuran theropods (such as birds), hadrosaurids (duck-billed dinosaurs), and titanosaurian sauropods, as well as their closest living relatives, the crocodylians. As a result, it was long assumed that all dinosaurs probably laid hard-shelled eggs. However, recent evidence has suggested that the eggs of early dinosaurs may have instead had flexible, leathery shells, more similar to those of most lizards and some turtles, with rigid eggshells evolving several times in later dinosaur groups. The eggshells of Qianlong appear to have been leathery in structure, lending support to this hypothesis.

One of my monthly goals is to stitch one dinosaur on this A-Z Dinosaur Chart. As you can see they're very confetti heavy, so only doing one a month is a good amount for now so I can work on other projects at the same time but still make progress. Though I do hope I can get one of my other longish term projects done soon so I can dedicate more time to this project as I do love stitching the dinosaurs.

But with that said, this month's dino is the heterodontosaurus, a small plant eating dinosaur that was found in the 60's in South Africa from the Early Jurassic era (200-190 million years ago). Look at that little guy!

I finished this earlier this month but I was waiting until Thanksgiving to post it.  For this year's Thanksgiving piece I decided to do the dinosaurs of Massachusetts.  This was relatively easy as there were only two of them from what I could find.  The one in the front is Podokesaurus Holyokensis, a light bodied predator and the Massachusetts' official state dinosaur.  The second is Anchisaurus, a relatively small sauropodomorph (an ancestor of sauropods).  Both existed in the early Jurassic period so they would have coexisted with each other as Pokodesaurus was more built for hunting small animals rather than larger prey. Happy Thanksgiving everyone! As always, comments and critiques are welcome. P.S. I used some of thee colors found on turkeys to color Podokesaurus.

Just got back from the Jurassic Park (I) and Jurassic World Dominion double feature and, two non-spoiler things to note:

1. I enjoyed Dominion a shocking amount, way more than I expected. I went in with very low expectations, given how much I didn't like Fallen Kingdom, but Dominion felt very different. It felt like it paid proper homage to the original Jurassic Park movies as well as the Jurassic World movies, and felt like a satisfying end to the franchise, as much as it can be. The new characters also are amazing.

2. After watching, I absolutely GET why these two films were paired. No spoilers, but if you're planning on seeing this movie and it's been a while since you've seen the OG Jurassic Park, do yourself a favor and do a refresher watching prior to Dominion. I think you'll like Dominion a lot more if you do. (only the very first Jurassic Park movie is really necessary, though i'm sure watching the whole JP trilogy/JW trilogy may enhance your experience in ways that I missed)

Was Dominion perfect? Of course not. But I think it did a good job, had some neat ideas both old and new, juggled its massive cast excellently, and most importantly, entertained me.

Perijasaurus lapaz Rincón et al., 2022 (new genus and species)

Meaning of name: Perijasaurus = Serranía del Perijá lizard [in Greek]; lapaz = La Paz [town near where the original fossil was discovered]

Age: Early or Middle Jurassic (Toarcian or Aalenian)

Where found: La Quinta Formation, Cesar, Colombia

How much is known: A single back vertebra.

Notes: Perijasaurus was an early sauropod, known from closer to the Equator than any other Early or Middle Jurassic sauropod. The type specimen of this dinosaur had been previously described in 1955, but was left unnamed at the time. Following a reexamination of the fossil, the authors of a new study gave it a name and reinterpreted it in light of what is now known about sauropod diversity. The only known vertebra of Perijasaurus is not as extensively hollow as those of later sauropods, suggesting that it represents an intermediate stage in the evolution of weight-saving features in sauropod vertebrae.
