Rapunzel and Eugene’s progression though … the perfectly placed conversations that take you on this journey of gradually deepening intimacy. Secrets are shared, backstories and motivations revealed all in the right places at the most natural times; they practice working together, saving each other, first just because they HAVE to. They learn about each other only because their shared goal of seeing the lights gives them the space to do so, while also keeping things from getting serious too soon. And the new and so unquestioned intimacy lasts up to the last conversation with the veil still between them —right before the lights when he asks her what’s wrong and she talks about being scared of being disappointed and scared of NOT being disappointed. And he reassures her one more time from his role as her companion that whatever’s next will be even more wonderful. And then the lights rise in the sky and suddenly the veil is removed and they both see what is between them for what it is. It’s perfect.

okay but the ending of Tangled. Let’s talk about it again. The scene with the lights reveals to both of them what has been slowly growing between them over the course of the journey —though in a way that journey towards each other started before they met—and that is that: they love each other. They’re the other’s match, to quote Ever After. And the thing that I love about it is that as SOON as they have this realization the story rips them apart and sets them on separate but equally swift paths to destruction, both to a prison that will end with their death most likely, but the tearing apart does NOT involve misunderstandings or the belief that the other betrayed them. Which is what stories almost always use for the last nadir before the resolution! Even though Mother Gothel sets it up for Rapunzel to believe that, she sees through it quickly and believes in the faithfulness of Eugene’s heart towards her.

And I just love it because it keeps the drama and focus exactly where it should be—on the fact that each knows the other is in danger and has to face the possibility (and try to fight against it becoming a reality) that this person they love could DIE. And it just —-it crystallizes it so beautifully. They have to FIGHT for each other and they do, fighting even each other in a race to save each other. Nothing that follows the scene with the lights could really be more narratively dramatic or suitable or satisfying than that love being put to the ultimate test. Anything else would be melodrama or foolishness or a let-down. A step backward. they are past the point of misunderstandings or cliches. They stand suddenly at the ultimate place for any relationship—testing the quality of love against its ultimate and only rival: death! And they both face it without flinching, almost without thinking.

And the story takes them up to the very point of losing each other one final time with Eugene literally about to die in her arms. And her heart breaks so deeply because she believes that it IS the end. But the thing about something like that, something that profound is that something new HAS to come out of it. Or maybe a better way to say it is that something can. Her heart breaks and it makes total sense on every level that this heartbreak changes her profoundly, unlocking this new power for her in a new way. She crosses the threshold of childhood with this heartbreak, with this sacrifice. But the ending isn’t death but a new beginning for BOTH of them. Both of them in a way DO die in those moments but then they get to come back to life in a new and different way. But only because they had the courage to sacrifice everything of themselves for love. It is so stunningly beautiful I am going to CRY.
