"Ich weiß, dass es nicht gesehen wird. Wir haben gesehen, dass es einen neuen Krieg gegeben hat. Aber das ist ein Grund eben weiter daran zu glauben. Denn was bleibt, wenn wir nicht daran glauben, dass ein Fortschritt möglich ist? Was bleibt?"
Erich Maria Remarque, 1962
My attempt to explain the quote ID ->
Basically he said, he would never stop writing though his messages had been ignored all the years. You have to continue your work no matter what and don't stop believing. What's left, if you lost all hope?

'Tschick' by Wolfgang Herrndorf
(This is a mini-review for all you social media enthusiasts with tiny attention spans who don't love me enough to have read my full Stephen King review (smh))
Tschick was pretty crazy, I liked it:
1) There was a queer character that isn't a stereotype? Man, I had no idea those existed in media! I want to get it out of the way right off the bat, ‘cause I think Tschick’s homosexuality is really well-written (he’s one of the two main characters). There was a bit of what I can best describe as “performative homophobia” at the beginning of the story and from the way he acts and talks it slowly sinks in. He’s not some hypereffeminate guy, or a bear or a twink of some sort; he’s just some new kid who likes stealing cars and isn’t really interested in girls which? I find pretty cool. I liked that aspect. Also, the story didn’t force any sort of queer plot-action between him and his clearly-heterosexual best friend, and it didn’t make a big deal out of it either, it was more of a little sidenote, and it was really well-done. Wanted to get that out of the way right off the bat so I don’t have to focus on it too much later.
Tumblr media
2) I like a male character extensively thinking about his feelings, it’s pretty unheard of unless it’s sex drive or pure, unfiltered anger. Maybe anger with an undertone of grief; but aside from that you don’t tend to get much out of male leads. Which I think sucks. Or it’s not documented or mentioned, and only implied. Which I also think sucks. I feel like the fake that Maik (did I spell that right) opened up more, commented on he feels about his feelings, and commented on the fact that he comments about how he feels on his feelings was pretty interesting. Also, I feel like it added more dimension to him as a character, his general cynical nature and pessimistic attitude despite being in a relatively-well-off place (in comparison to Tschick, the other male lead), it all just gave me the “he’s just like me fr” feel. Also, I generally just like seeing the lives of other teenage guys, seeing their lives come together, learning about the girl they’re seeing and their relationship with their dad, etc.
Tumblr media
c) It gives me a chance to live vicariously through a guy with anger issues who decides to steal a car and drive off spontaneously, which happens to be one of my wettest dreams of all time. (You would be alarmed at how much I fantasize about running away and off-roading across the country in a stolen car with a friend or two.)
Tumblr media
d) Also the book filled the void in my heart, the one that craves a decent young adult book, set and written in the good part of Germany with an accurate representation of what being a male teenager in Germany is like. Can vouch, since I used to be a male teenager in Germany. Also, it’s written in German (read it, if you can speak German) and it’s extremely well-written and clean, and handles some topics like substance abuse, poverty, and adultery pretty well, without glorifying or dramatizing anything in an over-the-top manner.
PSA: Do NOT read the English translation. It’s botched, and gross, and doesn’t do the story justice. If you’re not a German-speaker, sure, you might check it out due to interest but if you don’t like it as much as I do, it’s likely because you didn’t read the original.
Also, if I get positive feedback I’ll re-read the book and publish an EXTENSIVE review.

♡Konig & Ghost find out you're a few years older than them...♡
König
During the time that the KorTacs and T141 had joined forces, you had gotten pretty comfortable around the newcomers. Specifically one big, mountain of a man named König. He was a no-nonsense man when it came to his work, but aside from his duties he fared to be a pretty decent friend that you often hung around in your free time. You often asked him about his life in the military, learning many skills of the trade since he was a Colonel, and you had only managed to grow yourself to second lieutenant, the lowest commissioned officer rank.
While you were on the topic of years spent in the army, somehow your ages came into play and while he was still protective of revealing his exact age to anyone, he lead you on with the fact that he was in his mid-thirties. You were no priss, so talking about your age was something you didn't mind. When you revealed to him that you were a few years older than him over lunch, he paused, taking in your new revelation.
"You're older than me? How can that be? You look so...young" He trails off, stabbing at his lunch with his fork. You glanced at him, a surprised look on your face as you chuckled. He wasn't the kind of man to give out compliments very often, so it scratched a new itch hearing him use them on you. "Well thank you, that's very kind of you, König" She replied, her eyes darting from his eyes to the table.
"You carry yourself very well. Physically and emotionally, so I guess it's no surprise that you're older than some of us." He continues, his German accent thick on some words more than others. You smile at him as you blush slightly, waiting for him to finish chewing so he can continue speaking. "There's a quote, by the German novelist Franz Kafka. Youth is happy because it has the capacity to see beauty. Anyone who keeps the ability to see beauty never grows old." He clears his throat. "So...never stop seeing your beauty, I guess." He pauses after speaking, standing suddenly as he walks away from the table, striding towards the door before you could begin to reply.
You knew his social anxiety had caused him to distance himself from people sometimes, but you had no idea why he was still anxious near you after all the time you'd spent together. You were only just friends, right?...Right?
Simon "Ghost" Riley
Ghost was fond of you, unlike some of his other unit members of T141. He admired the way you carried yourself on the field, possessing a natural leadership instinct that he had worked endlessly, for years to attain. He envied you at times. He envied your ability to take risks without much thoughts of consequences, and you always trusted your gut. Which 100% of the time proved to be right. He knew it was some weird woman's instinct that always overpowered him. It sometimes embarrassed him when you outdid him mentally, standing your ground and showing him who's boss in front of his soldiers. While you were still under his command, he saw you as his right hand woman, always by his side to have his back when he needed you.
The team had just finished a debriefing for the new upcoming mission that you all were set to leave for in a few days time. You reeled at the information that was revealed, running your hands over your face in frustration. He sat by your side, trying to cheer you up with his sarcastic jokes and self-deprecative witticisms. Ignoring him, you shook your head as you flipped through the classified files once more.
"In all of my 37 years of living, I haven't come across a terrorist quite like him. Jesus." You sigh, standing to your feet as you begin to pace the room.
"Excuse me?" He stood suddenly, pacing over to you slowly. Your neck cranes as he approaches you, towering over you like a building. You hated when he did this. You placed a hand on his chest, trying to push him backwards. "Come on, Simon. Back up. You know I hate when you do that." You say frustrated, your hand meeting his hard chest as you swallow hard. He doesn't budge, staring down into your eyes as he bores a hole into your very soul.
"Never mind that." He disregards her demand, stepping closer to her. "You're...older than me? Since when?" He asks in disbelief.
You chuckle at him, the smile falling from your face as you realized that he wasn't making one of his stupid jokes. "Yeah... so? What's wrong with that?" You say, crossing your arms over your chest, causing your breasts to perk up the slightest bit. His eyes slyly graze over your covered cleavage under your tight black turtleneck, so quickly you wouldn't have caught it if you blinked. Realizing what he was staring at caused your stomach to flutter, your gaze shying away from his as you drop your arms to your sides. You were alone in the room now, the silence thickening the air between the two of you and making it hard to breathe.
"Uhh... No. Nothing's wrong with that, it's just..." He trails off, ending his sentence with a chuckle. "It's just that what, Simon?!" You press, raising your voice at him the slightest bit. Your blossoming friendship with him was on the line, and you gave him a stare that read: choose your next words carefully, boy.
"It's just that...It explains a lot. How you've always been so... confident. So right about everything. I get where that's all coming from now." He chuckles softly, rubbing a hand on the back of his neck, scratching under the hem of his balaclava. "Trust me, I like it more than you know." He finishes.
You smile at him slightly and nod your head, suddenly understanding why Simon had favored you all this time, the puzzle pieces all fitting together now. You realized that he liked the fact that you acted older than him. Your usual feminine maturity making him feel secured in his team. You made him feel confident in his actions, as long as he was by your side. There also might have been another reason he wasn't upset at all at this news, and that was because Simon "Ghost" Riley, had a thing for being controlled by a woman in power.
There was now a clear cut reason he'd tag along next to you in his free time more than usual, asking for your advice on career-altering and mission-making decisions. He trusted you, more than a friend, more than his soldier. He trusted you as his woman, even if you didn't know you were his yet.

On this day, 21 July 1936 one of the most iconic photos of the Spanish civil war was taken on the rooftop terrace of what is now the Iberostar/Apple store buildings in Barcelona. Taken by German photographer Hans Gutmann, the photo depicts 17-year-old socialist, Marina Ginestà. Although she is captured holding a rifle, it is doubtful that Ginestà actually fought on the front lines during the war. Instead, as she was partially brought up in France and spoke fluent French, Catalan and Spanish she worked as a journalist during the war and more notably as a translator and interpreter for the Soviet correspondent form the Pravda newspaper, Mijaíl Koltsov. Gutmann had come to Barcelona to cover the anti-fascist Popular Olympiad games and at the onset of the war decided to stay to cover the conflict. He then castilized his name to Juan Guzmán. A communist himself, he had easy access to what was formerly the Hotel Colón, a building taken over by the PSUC (the Catalan Socialist Unification Party) where he took many of his renowned photos. When the photo was taken of young Ginestà she never had held a rifle in her hands - Guzmán offered it to her to pose with and the same rifle appears in another photo in the same hotel of the writer Ludwig Renn. Ginestà survived the war and fled to France as a refugee. She later escaped the Second World War by fleeing to the Dominican Republic. With the rise of the dictatorship under Trujillo Ginestà moved to Venezuela where she settled for many years working as a journalist and a novelist. In 2014 she passed away in Paris, France aged 94. Monday, August 21.
Snoopy of the Day.
He is the anthropomorphic beagle. He is, and let us make no bones about this, an actual icon. It is a word that is used and abused, and not least by us here on the World Wide Web. But #snoopy, of Peanuts fame, is an internally-renowned, instantly recognizable superstar. Indeed more celebrated than his unfortunate, round-headed owner, Charlie Brown, in some respects. He is an anthropomorphic black and white beagle, and then some.
He is also an international beagle of mystery, and endlessly charismatic, with a magnificent array of alter egos: the German flying ace The Red Baron, The World Famous Author/Novelist, The Masked Marvel, The Easter Beagle, and Joe Cool. And there is simply no bad day or melancholy mood that cannot be remedied with a little dose of Snoopy. So it is our good fortune this Monday, August 21, that we stumbled upon @snoopyoftheday: your new go-to for each and every one of your daily Snoopy needs. Your daily bread of Snoopy, if you like.

I know you said that Violet!reader was just a normal human girl but since all of the cast seem to have some sort of animal quality I had some fun brainstorming some animals for her! (I just love your series so much I couldn’t get it out of my head)
I thought that the closest animal that represented Violet!reader was a swan. As she dances on the lake with her parasol, overprotective over those she cares about, faithfully loyal, that unfortunate SH scene when she looses the Major similar to when a swan looses their partner they take the infamous swan dive. The Black Swan ballet would make sense too as she looses her innocence during the war leading her into hell but still has that sense of purity. (I mean she’s able to be kind to everyone in the hotel at least)
But I digress, I just wanted to share my fondness of the series, if you had to chose an animal for Violet!reader to represent, what would it be?
An animal for Violet Evergarden!reader?
Well, I gotta say, your interpretation of Violet Evergarden!reader being a swan actually fits her quite well considering her backstory and the fact that the swans are one of the most dangerous birds in the world! :)
If I were to select one, it would be either a swan or a German Sheperd. German Sheperds are known for being hard workers and loyal to their family. Violet Evergarden!reader definitely sees the hotel staff as people worth putting her life on the line for, even if it means becoming a weapon again.
Hope this makes sense! Thank you for reading my Violet Evergarden series and hope you'll check out the rest of them on my other blog, @an-idyllic-novelist
