as far as whump phrases go it’s pretty hard to top “catch a chill” for me.

like they’re in the cold or rainy weather long enough that the cold feeling kinda sinks in and doesn’t go away even when huddled under warm blankets or by a heat source, and they still feel the cold in their bones for hours afterward.

and then they have to take a hot bath and get wrapped up and tucked in bed, but even in a warm room with a fire/stove going, they’re pale and shivery and just can’t get warm on their own, and the caretaker has to give them a hot water bottle for them to curl up with, and by the next morning, they’ve come down with a dreadful fever, cough, and chills, the works.

the first episode of fhjy was such a fucking blast. one of my favorite moments was most of the bad kids succeeding on their saving throws against being Frightened by the Night Yorb but Adaine failed, and when Brennan asked Siobhan how this looks/feels for Adaine, Siobhan was answered “i feel a panic attack coming on.”

and it’s like. as much as Adaine has changed since the beginning, it’s really refreshing to see that her anxiety disorder didn’t vanish with her character development. like, they’re acknowledging how that kinda stuff doesn’t just go away — you can’t really get over it so easily. he likes to keep it lighthearted and sweet; most of why people like having him officiate is because of his charisma. he’s great at handling whatever situation and usually good at ad libbing. and he genuinely loves doing it because well. it’s a party and it’s about people caring for each other, what’s not to love?

Can we actually talk about how insane it is that Simon removed his mask for the 141? Everything he’s been through has caused him to disassociate entirely from the person he is. He cannot bear to BE himself; to have Simon Riley be someone who exists and is acknowledged by others. He uses the mask to create his nonexistence; to become a weapon only focused on finishing his mission. With the mask, Simon Riley is dead. The only thing left is his “Ghost.”

By creating this barrier, he distances himself from his teammates emotionally and can convince himself that only the objective matters (see: abandoning Soap after Graves betrays them and calling it “a force of habit”).

Simon is not good with expressing his feelings. For example, he’s extremely worried about Soap during “Alone,” but shows it through jokes and talking to keep Soap calm. Any time Soap insists Ghost cares, the man immediately deflects and insists they are only “teammates” and that Soap needs to focus on his own self-preservation.

But we see afterwards that Ghost wants to make an effort to connect emotionally to his team; to show the 141 who “Simon” is, not just Ghost. For example, after Rodolfo assumes that Ghost would wait for his men and Soap begins to express his doubt, Ghost immediately jumps in and asserts that, yes, he would wait for them. He lets Soap know with his own words that he is there for his team. This is a rare instance where Ghost allows himself to be emotionally vulnerable and open, and it sticks out immediately to the player.

And finally, the ultimate showcase of trust: the removal of the mask. Simon rips away that last barrier of distance between himself and the 141. He affirms HIS existence and allows his teammates to see the true person underneath the mask. Price’s “Good to see you again, Simon,” only adds to the fact that this is “Simon” standing with them. In that moment, there is no “Ghost.”

Anyway, I just thought it was really touching. Simon is a deeply traumatized character, but he’s also someone who has bottled up that trauma so well that it can be hard to separate his two identities and their wants. I really hope his backstory gets touched on more in the next game (and please don’t fucking kill him right after that Activision lmao).

Ngl it actually really bothers me when people say Dick was the angry Robin and that his anger is his defining feature. I mean, hate the phrase “angry Robin” in general since it’s reductive and people only really use it when they want to hype up their fave, but especially when they use it for Dick.

When someone says this, they tend to a. post a panel of/talk about something Dick did when he’s an adult (aka not Robin since he stopped being Robin in his late teens) or b. post a panel of Dick in the pretty immediate aftermath of his parents’ murder which is….. a choice???

It just feels like a pretty weird misunderstanding of his origin/character. Yes, he was angry when he first met Bruce since his parents’ killer was still at large, but because Bruce helped him bring his parents murderer to justice he was able to let go of that anger.

That’s the whole point! Bruce saw this child who witnessed his parents murder the same way he did and saw the same path of loneliness/anger/obsession he could potentially take if he wasn’t redirected. Bruce wanted to help him get the closure he never did and because of that Dick was able to be a hopeful and optimistic child again and he loved being Robin! Just look at him:

There’s a reason you’ll see a lot of panels of him smiling as a kid! Now if you want to talk about the anger he developed as a young adult due to the pretty much constant exposure to trauma, death, and violence he experienced during adolescence, that’s a different discussion. But he was mostly a happy kid when he was Robin!

Even as an adult who’s been exposed to some extremely traumatic experiences, Dick Grayson fights every day for his optimism and to be a positive person. He always tries to see the best in other people. He wants a better future for Bludhaven, the city he chose because he knew it needed the most help. He moved on from his parents murder to try to live the life he wants to live. Anger is NOT Dick’s defining trait, it is 100% his hope.
