disc. reader wears beaded bracelets (not rlly a disc), bruce is a total flirt, fourth wall is broken like two times, use of (y/n), reader likes horror movies
Tumblr media
in all honesty, bruce had no idea why he was there, in front if that glass door. the sign above it read ‘g central films.’ it was a hole-in-the-wall store in the heart of gotham, most people passed by it without a second thought. so why didn’t he? what drew him here?
looking around for paparazzi—even though he disguised himself well enough— bruce pushed the door open and heard a bell ding above him. the store was very cluttered, film posters decorated the walls as semi-organized shelves held a wide array of movies, magazines, books, and merchandise.
“hi, sorry, i’ll be with you in a second!” a voice called out from a storage closet, and bruce took off the hood he was wearing, and took to strolling the shelves. he ran his fingers along the spines of the many medias present, feeling new and old items against his fingertips.
the sound of beaded bracelets clinking against each other was the largest indicator of someone’s presence, and an employee—who bruce could assume was also the owner— stood at the opening of the shelf-made hallway.
“holy shit-“ you gasped. when you came into work today, you expected many things. maybe scarecrow would break out of arkham and fear gas the city, or you’d be robbed by some goon, but having billionaire bruce wayne standing in your store was not on that list.
“i’m sorry- excuse my language- what can i help you with mr. wayne?” you asked.
“please, call me bruce.” he said, walking up to where you stood and stuck his hand out, inviting you to shake it—which you did.
“right, bruce, looking for anything in particular?” you inquired, letting your hand fall to your side as you fiddled with the hem of your shirt.
“to be completely honest with you, i didn’t come here with anything in mind,” bruce said, winking, “unless a cute store owner wants to recommend me something.”
your heart started to beat ridiculously fast, it wouldn’t have surprised you if bruce could hear it.
“erm- uh- do you have any genres you like? maybe we could start there?”
“hm, never really paid attention to film genres,” bruce shrugged. he absolutely did pay attention to them, but he’d be lying if he didn’t want to spend time with you, the cute movie enthusiast.
“right, um, i really like horror, uh, i have a few favorites if you wanna pick from them,” you mentally punched yourself for the constant nervous stuttering, though bruce found it very charming.
“sounds good to me, lead the way…”
“(y/n).”
“your name suits you.”
this flirting was gonna knock you off your feet.
you walked out from the shelf area and went behind the counter, digging in a box underneath. bruce stood in front, looking at the items in the glass display case that showcased the more expensive merchandise. whether it be an authentic autograph from cillian murphy (bruce wondered how you managed to get that,) a rare vinyl for a very popular band, or— bruce’s face heated up when he saw the batman-themed jewelry.
he was very flattered, can you tell?
“okay, here we are.” bruce snapped up from the items to see a small stack of horror movie cds propped in front of him. movies such as american psycho, scream, candyman, and the blair witch project caught his eye.
“anything catch your eye bruce? i can always find more if this isn’t up to your speed,” you said, tapping your fingers against the glass. bruce stared at the collection before picking up the cd for american psycho.
“i’ll go with this one,” he said.
“american psycho? alright, a lot of people think it’s garbage but i really like it— has anyone ever told you you look like christian bale?” you asked, picking up the rest of the cds before placing them where they were before.
“christian bale, hm. I definitely see a resemblance, is he your celebrity crush?” bruce teased, and you nearly dropped the cd as you were renting it out to him.
“pssh, no—i mean, not that you’re ugly you’re really handsome—uh, i mean—fuck-“ bruce laughed at the way you got when he teased you, it was adorable.
“right-heres your cd bruce,” you said, handing him the box with shaky hands. he took the box and gently lifted your hand to his lips, pressing a soft kiss against the back of it.
“i think i’ll be coming here more often,” bruce said, pulling up his hood and walking out the store, sending a smile your way before he blended in with the bustling crowd of gotham.
you pressed your cold hands to your face, trying to cool down. today was eventful, more than you could’ve ever expected. and, you wouldn’t complain if bruce stopped by again.

Am I really about to do a full analysis of The Last Wish? Yes, yes I am. Starting with characters!!! One by one!!!
Perrito
Tumblr media
Spoilers
One thing about Perrito is that he is so darn pure and tragic. When the trailers came out, I noticed people were sceptical about Perrito. Saying how he might be annoying and take away from the film. People even compared him to Olaf from Frozen. Which was a shock to me. I thought people loved Olaf from Frozen but I guess I was wrong. After a day of thinking on this, I finally understood why people thought this. Side characters that are usually used as the comedic relief can sometimes flop. They can be annoying and take away precious screen time from characters that the audience wants to see. But with Perrito, that is never the case. He doesn't waste a single screen time. In fact you end up wanting more from him. He's just so darn positive and sweet even after what he went through. He was thrown away by his owners for being the runt of the litter. But he was so positive that he thought they were playing tag. So every time they tried to throw him away, he would end up returning like it was all a game. And then one day, his owners drown him in a sock. And it's just sweet to see Perrito so positive about this. The sock they try to drown him in, he turns it into something happy and keeps it as a sweater. I guess it's his positive view that makes him so likeable. He leaves a positive impression on Kitty when she has a talk with him about trust. What I love about their talk is that Kitty doesn't push Perrito to not trust anyone and Perrito doesn't push Kitty to trust him or Puss. Just that she has to trust someone. The conversation just feels very natural and healthy. Now let me talk about how his childlike view doesn't clash with the dark themes of the film.
Olaf and Perrito comparison
I'm not bashing Olaf, I'm using him as an example. If I see a single bad comment about Olaf, I will hunt you down for insulting him and writing a strongly worded letter!
I adore the first Frozen film. It was wholesome, cute, magical, and just phenomenal. And Olaf as a character blended in perfectly with the environment that was created. The film was near to perfect and every character shined. But then Frozen 2 came in. Frozen 2 had darker elements that were fantastic. I loved the concept and the way the story was told. I do have a few issues with it but this isn't about Frozen. This is about how Olaf's positivity clashed with the darker elements. Olaf is supposed to have a childlike view of life just like Perrito. The two characters are put into similar situations. Innocent, naive, and trusting characters who are struggling to understand the more serious issues around them. The difference is, Olaf, clashed with the darker elements while Perrito helped embrace the darker elements. Olaf in the second film still has his innocence and childlike wonder. He goes to the library to read about life and soaks up knowledge like a child would. He even has a song about how everything will make sense when he's older. And that's a strong beginning to Olaf's character. It only starts falling apart when Olaf doesn't really learn about his surroundings. Does he understand that Elsa died? Or that his kingdom committed genocide? You can argue he's still a kid but he never shows his emotions or thoughts about the situation. Instead, he remains positive and tells jokes to cheer up Anna. It's cute but it feels pointless. I still love Olaf as a character, I just wish they would let him take time to process what was happening around him.
As for Perrito, he helps embrace the darker elements instead of just being positive all the time. His positivity influences both Kitty and Puss. For Kitty because of his conversation with her. Seeing things in a positive way isn't bad at all and we could all use a friend or someone to trust. For Puss, it's the panic attack scene. Puss is in a very vulnerable state and Perrito follows him. The moment is very tender and quiet. No dialog or humor, just the sound of the heart beating like crazy and hyperventilating. The moment is so darn sweet because Perrito doesn't talk or try to make Puss laugh, he's simply there for him. He places his head on Puss and that's enough to calm Puss down. And I feel like this is something many people forget easily. You don't need to talk, you don't need to say a word, you just need to be there. Listening and making sure the person who's venting knows your listing. This just reminded me of a personal experience of mine. A few years ago I was very vulnerable to panic attacks. All my friends did exactly this. They didn't try to throw in flowery words or jokes, they were simply there and made sure I knew they were listening. I only lost one friend, thank God because he was actually a jerk. And that "friend" tried using flowery language and false promises. Which only made things worse for himself and I. So yeah, the panic attack scene was very meaningful to me and made me cry. And this is what I mean by Perrito embracing the darker elements of the film. He doesn't fight off the heaviness of the moment. He doesn't try to bring light into the darkness. Instead, he goes into the darkness and lets everyone feel what they need to feel. He helps the emotions flow out properly. And I LOVE that!!!! Perrito isn't oblivious to what's going on, naive yes but not oblivious. He knew what to do when Puss had a panic attack. He knew how to talk to Kitty about her issues. He helped Puss and Kitty strengthen their relationship. And he helped Goldie find out what she wanted. Oh, and his moment with Goldie was adorable. You can tell from this moment that Perrito isn't dumb, he's positive. Baby insults him and instead of being upset, he joins in. He's aware he was insulted but he puts a positive spin on it. He's aware he's an orphan like Goldie and compliments her family. This makes you wonder, is he aware that he's an attempted murder victim? And he chooses to remain positive?
I'll talk about his final arc on the Wishing Star section. But man. I adore how well written he is.
Next is Kitty.

Notes from the Taskmaster S15E04 recording
I got to see this episode filmed back in September (if you were there hello from the person Mark Olver kept quizzing lol, and important question: do you have an airing cupboard?) and thought I'd make a post with some Bonus Content from the recording. Last time I did this I realised I'd forgotten loads so this time I got home, sat down, diligently made notes for until the end of the prize task, and decided to do the rest the next day. I did not do the rest. So we'll just have to see how well my memory holds up 😅
The version of Greg's aeroplane-themed intro was an alternative version filmed at the end - the original had the reveal that THEY'RE ALL DEAD!! and the second one was filmed "in case anyone dies in a plane"
Alex had three """""jokes"""" about his Italy trip, each one increasingly terrible. The one I made a note of was "I saw Stevie Wonder" turning into "I saw a wonder of the word". Needless to say, Greg was unimpressed.
When Greg went to Mae to introduce their prize task, their opening comment was "I’m excited to continue to explore our….dynamic"
The strength of the dynamic was then questioned when Greg was dismissive of their prize
Whatever your opinion of how Mae was scored for a later task, when Greg saw their prize on the stage at the end of the episode he said it had been underscored and it actually looked like a lot of fun
“Kiell you’ve been doing badly…it’s not your turn yet though. Frankie?"
"Jenny has always given a sob story just after presenting her prize, last episode leant heavily on her dead father" - we were told this after Jenny said she couldn't knit the hat because she had nerve damage in her hands
"I forgot to be funny then, sorry that was just sad" - Jenny
The ad buffers we saw in studio were filmed in Gatwick, and since this was before S14 aired there was a discussion about what airport it was based on the presence of an upstairs Jamie Oliver restaurant in one of them
[here ends the comprehensive notes]
I cannot stress this enough, but ANY angle or thought that you may have about Mae's throw(s) (or lack thereof) came up in the studio
I can't remember what ended up swinging (heh) it in their favour but it truly felt as though it was going to go on forever
Man I wish I could remember any specifics because there was So Much, genuinely every single possible take on that attempt was thoroughly and gleefully dissected
Hearing during this episode that Ivo had won the last two was much like when I saw that Bridget was in first place during the record for S13E04 lol
Right. Banana.
I think the logic ended up being that the task said to get the 'BANANA'
And they did, in fact, get the 'BANANA'
They got the word not the object
And there was definitely a debate about what it is to be a noun, which Mae weighed in on and I think almost made Ivo explode that they had no right to after what they did with a verb
I feel like this may have been cut bc Ivo used 'she' and I imagine the editors are going for consistency, but it's a shame bc it was amazing
But it was still 'BANANA'. As stated in the task. The word it said to get was the word they got.
Do with this what you will.
During the live task, Ivo kept pouring his sand, very very slowly, after everyone else had finished and after he was told his stream had broken, until the bottle was empty.
Tragically Jenny did not wear the turkey on her head at the end, despite everyone agreeing earlier that the winner would have to.
There we go then. And the moral of the story is to actually make notes on what happened before you forget everything. And by 'you' I mean me. I swear I'll have better notes about the S16 finale.

Tanned in their own right and powerful, but oddly proportionate to the shorter stature the man seemed to possess. Sherlock watched the water run off of him, down his back, tracing a path along his spine and through the pleasing fossae lumbales laterales and lumbar lordosis into the waistband of the trunks. It is there that he meets Sherlock Holmes: a class A asshole too smart for his own good. John expects a long, dull, lonely summer. So I was rereading The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (still working my way through the reread) and I went with a friend to see the new movie and here are some thoughts on Lucy Gray and Snow and all that stuff, in case anyone is interested, particularly the differences made between the book and the movie.
The first thing that stood out to me was the difference between (from what I could tell) book!Lucy Gray and movie!Lucy Gray. In the book, I think that Lucy Gray is much more of an ambiguous character compared to how she was in the movie (I wonder if it was to help make the main message of the film clearer (in classic 'beat you over the head with the metaphor' Hollywood fashion)). There is so much emphasis placed in the beginning of the book on how Lucy Gray adjusts her appearance, how she makes sure that she looks as good as she can - a tendency that is clearer in the book when she and Snow more overtly also strategise what she should sing when she's on television. The book makes it clear that they have had discussions about what she might or might not perform to get as many sponsors as possible before the event and he is surprised when she ends up singing something other than what they had discussed. To me, it felt like that the book spent more time showing us how similar they are to each other by showing how they manipulate people through impression management. Lucy Gray in the books is okay with singing for strategy, while in the movie, she insists on maintaining some sort of 'authenticity' by only singing when she is inspired to do so.
Something to acknowledge, of course, is that Snow is a character who fundamentally trusts no one. He is aware of Lucy Gray's tendencies and perhaps they are overemphasised to us as the reader because in the book we spend so much time in his head. Perhaps the ambiguity around Lucy Gray is merely a reflection of Snow's suspiciousness, but I like to think that she is similar to Snow in that she knows that there is power to being likeable to the right people and sometimes that's the only card you can play when the odds are stacked against you (Snow's sense of being wronged is obviously much more a product of his own delusion, while Lucy Gray's is much more real). It might be counter-intuitive, but I think having Lucy Gray and Snow be more similar on that level would make the deeper themes of the movie clearer: discussions of 'human nature' is fairly reductive and people have the capacity of both good and evil, sometimes at once, and if you assume the worst in people on your quest to power, you will probably draw that out but also that's how you become a ruthless dictator.
The fundamental difference between Lucy Gray and Snow in the end is that Lucy Gray believes in the good in people, and Snow does not.
So why am I going on about this? Well, partly because these thoughts have been floating around in my head, but also in terms of the romance aspect of the film, I thought it might have some potentially interesting implications. Mainly, do I think that the romance between Lucy Gray and Snow was genuine? Yes and no.
Yes in the sense that they did have a connection and whatnot, but also no for a few reasons. Firstly, because I think one of the main aspects of why Snow becomes attracted to Lucy Gray is because his vanity is flattered. He likes the idea that this now immensely popular girl likes him, that he managed to win her over, that despite that he's Capitol and part of the Games, she trusts him. He likes the idea of the romance, once he gets to District 12 (I'm not there at the rereading yet though) it's not like that he has a lot else to do, and it would make sense for him to try carve something out with Lucy as a backup as it looks like his future in the Capitol for all intents and purposes is toast.
Secondly, I think Lucy Gray is genuinely intrigued and attracted to Snow. But she's also someone who was deeply betrayed with the Reaping, deeply traumatised, and still reeling from the breakup that caused her to be in the Games. Then this handsome, charming man shows up who seems to care for her and goes above and beyond expectations as her mentor. At the start, she is very aware of the fact that he's Capitol is in the back of her mind. She also knows that she needs to keep him on side while she is in the Games (as she clearly sees that he's more invested than 99% of other mentors and she is gaining advantages from that investment that other tributes could only dream of). But over time, he demonstrates that he wants her to survive and he helps her out. When he then shows up in 12, she is surprised and she never expected to see him again. But he seemed to be a good person from everything he did for her in the Games (some of it she could barely guess at), and she's now basically forced to live in the same district as her ex and the girl who made her compete in the Games. He shows up, seemingly offering this fairytale and she happily goes along with it - after all, she likes him well enough. But she also has very little sense of who he actually is and she's (probably) still hurting a bit too much from her previous relationship for it to be a relationship where she is truly and deeply in love.
And then when she realises that he set up his seemingly only friend to be killed, she realised that her dream prince is actually not the kind of man she thought that he was, and that everyone is expendable to him. She is the apple of his eye at the moment, but eventually the shiny romance of it all will fade, so the best thing to do was to escape.
I don't know, maybe I just like the idea that Lucy Gray and Snow were people who had potential and that they were essentially two people who the world had broken in two, clinging to each other, and if it wasn't for Snow's narcissism and ruthlessness, if he had essentially been a better person, they could have really had something.

Hi! I’ve started reading Brideshead Revisited—mostly because you seem to really like it and recommend it a lot! I like to annotate books and take notes; are there any themes you particularly like about it and recommend looking out for?
Oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooohhhhhh......!!!!!!!!!!!!!!....!!!
THE FLAME IS LIT IN THE CHAPEL
My dear friend, the flame is lit in the chapel!
Themes I like. Themes I – like? Everything. Perhaps nothing. Perhaps both. (Do I seem to like it? It is my favourite book in the world. I am not sure if I can say that I like it, but boy! does it belong to me. I wonder if it likes me – as far as a book could like a person. If it does, then in a David Eliot sort of way [by the way, if you have trouble with the ending of this book or see it as a sad ending, I recommend to you the novel The Bird in the Tree], inflicting pain as a good surgeon does.
A few notes in the beginning: it's an incredibly beautiful novel. In every way. And not only the first part, as some would like to claim, reducing it to a "dark-light academia fluffy gay-ish romance with strawberrries" and suchlike. All three parts, and the Prologue and Epilogue, are beautiful, important, and (though in some ways different) interconnected. If you want to watch an adaptation, go for the 1981 series, which is brilliant. Avoid the 2008 film, which is horrid.
Themes that stick out to me in particular – that simply happen to (come to mind to) me:
The flame is lit in the chapel (and Brideshead still standing) (and all that in the Age of Hooper)
Every single thing Cordelia says. Pay good attention to everything Cordelia says, especially later on!
The inexorable call of the Church, the inevietable pursuit of and by and through God
Love and all that is Good of it (and all the pain it can bring)
Choosing the Right thing against all odds, against all desires, against all expectations
Finding, having, and in some ways losing (yet somehow never truly losing) a home, as an outsider who is perhaps even more at home than everyone else, and coming back, physically, and spiritually, even when it is lost, when times have changed, when that place – and that sort of place – does not exist anymore, because its essence will never leave you (Sic transit gloria mundi)
Being a Catholic in the Diaspora – Being an imperfect Catholic in the Diaspora! (oh how much more perfect and pious and pure Catholics are expected to be in non-Catholic environments!) – Belonging to a deeply paradoxial culture, and truly belonging to the paradox more than to any plain and simple conventionality
More universal than that: being different at the same time as being not different at all, being different in the sense that the same life is experienced with a different sort of light; belonging (and not) and then elsewhere (and not that either)
~beautiful ideas~
The ultimate Paradox that Charles found what will truly be his way through those who appear more wayward than anyone else (and perhaps just because of that!)
SEBASTIAN [contra mundum]
Vocations, what Cordelia says about Vocations!
Friendship, loyalty, and when it's just that that goes wrong
SEBASTIAN
(Do not underestimate Julia. And do not judge Lady Marchmain too quickly)
The war, "the Age of Hooper", and the Time That Was
"homeless, childless, middle-aged, loveless"
EVERYTHING
I teared up writing this, but I also know that this list is incomplete and unbalanced, because I am not currently concentrating properly on the matter. I will come back to this if something else occurs to me, if you don't mind. In any case, it is a sublime book – and there is so much to it! I sincerely recommend to pay good attention, to all sorts of little bits! And to be open, to each and every one character, and part and chapter.
Oh, and let's not forget Aloysius! Not a theme but a Very Important Character.
And I would still also like to say that, though the setting of this book might appear distant and antiquated to a reader (I have read enough reviews to know that this is a common opinion) that everything this book is about is still (and, in a way again, these last few years) very, very relevant. (I do not think that contemporary relevance is a necessecity for an old book, but nevertheless it does simply happen to be so with this one.)
Oh, I do so love this book. (And I am so incredibly glad that my posts about it made you all the more interested!)

Meet 24 hour — they're ready to cheer you up, well…24 hours a day!
2019. Despite both not being really fond of publicity, it seems like the idea of making a band together made them work on their social awkwardness and, by publishing their fresh version of Calamari Inkantation, they got the attention of Inkopolis' cephalings. Soon after that Off the Hook finally were ready for their tour and their place was offered to 24 — which, while being quite unexpected, but was accepted by them.
Tumblr media
Sango is a beginner DJ with a potential, but not with the most expressive face, trying hard to contribute in broadcast, although very often he can be seen gesticulating more than talking…
(even though Three is they/them non-binary in my headcanons, they went through some gender identity crisises before getting there. Timeline-wise in 2019 my Three uses he/she and identifies as man, and still has to figure out why it still feels not like it doesn't suit him. I will refer to Sango with he/she when I portray him in that time period, but with they/them when it's later, when they came out as non-binary!)
Tumblr media
Hachi is a brighter, easily impressionable and smiling octoling songwriter. She seems to be very easy to offend because of her emotionality, but she forgives easily.
(now, i'm not good at music at all, but i've made a track for Inkopolis News ft. 24hour!~ i tried making more but it all turned out bad and my pc couldn't handle my spicy beats, uhhh...)

🎃SpookyFest!🎃
Hachi: It's time! Sango: 24 LIVE… Hachi: Yep-yep, that's us! I wonder what are current stages for… OH! Sango: ? (turned his head to Hachi, interested) Hachi: I think we might need to tell the exciting news first! Sango: You mean… Hachi: (nods) Ta-du-dum! It's Splatfest time! Sango: What's the topic this time? Hachi: We'll find out… In a minute!
[BAM!] Hachi: (puts her hands over her beak) Ah!! Wait, what day is it?! It can't be that soon… Splatoween, already?! Sango: Oooooh… (motioning fingers in a spooky manner) How would you like to spend your Splatoween…diving into the atmosphere by watching spooky films? Hachi: Or on a theme party? Hachi: Oooh… This one's tough… (taps finger on her cheek, thinking) Sango: It's pretty simple for me. Parties are not my thing. Sango: You can't turn off people around you when you're tired. Sango: But a TV always has this function. Hachi: Hm-hm~ But what about spending time with your friends in spooky or funny costumes? Hachi: You could make thematic decorations, food, games, anything! Hachi: I'm team Splatoween party. Sango: Have fun there, and I'm going to watch Nightmare before Squidmas. Hachi: Hey, I want to too..! (puffs her cheeks) Hmpff… Sango: I can wait for you if you want. Hachi: !.. Sango: (smirks) Well, what would you choose? Splatoween films or Splatoween party? Hachi: Don't forget to go to the Splatfest terminal and choose!!
~~~ Hachi: It looks like it's time to wrap up… Sango: Well, all day's the time… Hachi: …to let you shine!
(yep, i decided 'what do you mean no splatoween. here i have it right there.')
Tumblr media
SpookyFest art! Hachi and Sango doing both activities in the end. It's not like anyone's gonna find out that they're both too scared of scary movies and social interactions to do things on their own, right?
Bonus: 24 concept art!
Tumblr media
(you can actually use this as a reference as long as you understand that some things here aren't finalised and if something doesn't seem right(like sango's teal color is different from his actual design here) — you better reference the artwork above! it's mostly good for small details like their headphones or hachi's skirt for example)
Tumblr media
(me trying to figure out their studio layout and dynamic at broadcast)
Tumblr media
(small doodles where you can see hachi hiding her shoulders by tying her sweat..er?.. anyway i love this concept so much.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(i tried to cut out splatoween sango and hachi in case anyone wants to use them as a pfp idk (just credit me please if you do!))
Tumblr media
(also a small shellfie doodle i made yesterday bc i was really hyped to show all this!!!)
big thank you if you made it to the end!! i worked on this for half of this month and i'm really glad i finally get to show all this stuff :] i hope you like it 'cause i might plan to do something else...
The tires squeaked as the motorbike came to an abrupt halt as soon as the small airfield building appeared between trees further down the empty road.
Yoongi didn't want to attract anyone's attention and decided to leave it there behind and walk the rest, using the plants as cover.
It seemed to be one of those private airfields used by hobby pilots or private jets. And this noon, the small airfield seemed to be in use as indicated by the parked van in front of its entrance and the people scattered in a circle around the hangar at the very end of it.
Yoongi cut a whole in the fence with his sword and was about to sneak in as the building was probably hosting even more surprise guests, when his phone quietly vibrated in his pocket and he picked it up quickly. Making sure no one was near to have heard anything.
"What?" he asked in a hushed tone, not even having checked the caller ID.
It was silent for a moment and he wondered if he had declined accidently when Jimin finally spoke up. "Where are you? I'm at your apartment but you obviously not."
"I'm.. out."
It wasn't hard for Jimin to pick up the distress in his friend's voice though. "What's going on? Did something happen?"
"W-why are you at my apartment anyway?" Yoongi asked in a desperate attempt to change topics. Eyes narrowing when seeing the men entering the hangar. Something having startled them but he couldn't tell what.
"I came because of our conversation yesterday. I'm not an idiot, I know you and I know you won't ask for help even if you need it, which is clearly the case right now. You won't tell me what's going on though I can clearly tell y-"
"It's nothing, Jimin, seriously. Go back home," his voice softened. Trying his best to sound as casual as possible and for anyone else it might've been convincing enough, but not for Jimin. And he heard his younger friend sigh on the other end of the line.
"Fine, if you don't wanna tell me.."
A sad smile spread on Yoongi's lips hearing his disappointment. "Don't worry. It's nothing." And he hung up.
I can't let you get involved in this.
Dragging out a breath, he shook his head and decided to redirect his attention to his plan instead. So he slid through the hole to the airfield. Carefully nearing the airplane hangar by always staying close behind buildings and objects so no one would take notice of him. The fact they were still there meant Soyeon had to be somewhere near as well, which was soothing, but not soothing enough.
Five.
He counted five men dressed in cheap suits and sunglasses walking in and out.
Best case scenario, it was only them. Worst case scenario there were more either inside the hanger or the building - or both.
His dark eyes darted a guy who isolated himself from the rest, standing at the side and smoking a cigarette. Taking a long drag, he let the grey smoke evaporate into the warm air.
With slow but steady steps Yoongi drew closer, nearing him from behind. After a few more drags, the man had finished his cigarette and tossed the butt to the ground, stepping on it with his heel. He was about to return inside when suddenly Yoongi's arm hooked around his neck and forced him to his knees. The katana's blade dangerously close to his throat, making him wince in agony.
"Don't do anything dumb like calling for help," he whispered into the man's ear, "How many are there?"
The man refused to tell, wiggling and trying freeing himself but Yoongi's leg pressed down on the back of his bent knees, preventing him from doing so. The blade almost slipped and touched his neck now. And the man immediatelly stopped when sensing its cool touch, his pulse picking up.
"Twelve. We're twelve," he eventually choked out, screwing his eyes shut. Content with the information, Yoongi knocked him off with a hard hit on the back of his head.
Twelve.
Minus one, eleven.
Eleven against one wasn't good.
Even if he was skilled, even if he had two different weapons with him, it wouldn't be easy without help. But he couldn't ask for any.
It wasn't pride nor egoism. It was concern that wouldn't let him.
He cared too much for his friends to ask them for help, although he was certain they'd be upset and perhaps offended if they knew what was going on, but that was a consequence he preferred over any alternative outcome.
They might've been in far more dangerous situations in the past and still always made it through them, however, he couldn't be certain about how this story now would unfold. And after all, they had all agreed on stepping out of this kind of life. He didn't want to drag them into it without reason.
And somehow Soyeon's words rang in his memory and perhaps he understood her better now. Because at the end, they both had similar reasons for acting the way they did.
Besides, it wasn't just the three of them anymore like in their early twenties. Others would get affected as well and he couldn't let Arabella or Cassandra grief for something that could've been avoided. Something that was solely his business anyway.
He took a deep breath then and closed his eyes. Feeling blood flow from his head to his arms and hands, letting his fingers relax around the shaft as his mind went blank.
With a smirk, he blinked them open again. Already spotting his next targets strolling around. And one by one he took down the other four men as well.
First the one who came out in search for his knocked out colleague. Then the second one standing next to the entrance. When the third and fourth one noticed it was already too late for them, they were too slow in drawing their guns and Yoongi had already moved quickly. Disabling their weapons with a swift swing of his sword.
Yoongi wasn't an amateur, obviously he wouldn't just leave all the unconscious bodies laying around but instead tied them up and dumped them in a storeroom in the back. However, he knew their colleagues would get suspicious and ask questions about their whereabouts. So he already mentally prepared for that.
He was finished with them in no time, breathing out of his parted lips. His fingers ran through his hair then, combing back the strands that had fallen in front of his eyes. Letting his brown irises wander carefully around the empty looking area.
There didn't seem to be anyone else there and he wondered if they kept her in the main building or if they had already taken her somewhere else.
Had she already been long gone?
And why did they bring her there anyway?
The sense of foreboding he'd had about them not just letting her off the hook so easily, proved more and more right. Even if getting the necklace, the type of people those guys worked for usually weren't so easily pleased.
But why bringing her there? Did they.. did they plan to take her with them? To another city or.. His breath quickened when realisation hit him. Or another country?
No, why would they bring her to a different place? It didn't make sense.
He turned around, trying deciphering any clues. He didn't dare to call out for her just yet. There were supposed to be seven more guys around after all. So his focus shifted to the private jet parked in front of him instead. Standing idle there when noises were heard from outside suddenly. Still afar but approaching fast, nearing the hangar.
Without thinking twice, he took cover behind wooden cargo boxes and a pile of stacked sacks. Calming his breath as he pricked up his ears to try distinguish any voices or words.
"Get the machine ready, I don't wanna waste any more time waiting for that guy," someone said in an upset tone. A clear accent audible in his words. Soon multiple steps echoed on the concrete floor.
Eight to nine people, Yoongi deducted by the sound of it. In total more than twelve people.
Had that guy lied to him?
The steps came to an abrupt halt then, a short silence following.
"Where's everyone? Weren't they supposed to keep an eye on everything?"
"You think they got cold feet?" someone else wondered out.
The person with the accent scoffed. "They should pray I don't find them then," he said through gritted teeth. The noise of the airplane's door opening being heard next and Yoongi peeked out of his stash. Seeing a man dressed in a pilot uniform climb up the stairs followed by another one in a navy blue suit that looked of a much higher quality than anyone else's. This particular guy actually catching his interest. After all, Yoongi could spot the platin watch around his wrist from a mile away. He was clearly a foreigner and if he had to make a wild guess, he'd say probably an Italian.
Whoever that was, he wasn't a simple goon like the others. No, he seemed of some kind of status.
His gaze wandered to the rest then, seeing another two men on the side dragging something towards the jet.
His eyes widening when realising it was a person. Soyeon.
He almost called out her name. Biting his tongue to keep himself from doing anything foolish now. Instead, he observed her intensely. Jaw clenching at the sight of her dull expression.
Her usually sparkling eyes were resting on the ground, almost desoriented. And she looked exhausted. Exhausted from trying resisting and fighting back. The red scratches on her knuckles and knees saying it all. And his heart ached with rage.
She was quietly letting the two men lead her to the stairs of the plane and only then he noticed her wobbly knees, causing the scowl on his face to deepen. Wondering just what had happened in the past hour since he'd last seen her.
Another man pushed open the hangar's entrance completely then. Allowing a plane to fit through it.
That wasn't good. He didn't have any time left. No time at all. He had to act methodically though and not rush into it. He was in a clear disadvantage after all.
His hand went behind him, taking out the gun from his waistband. He might not be as good as a shooter as Taehyung, but he was definitely still good enough to aim at someone's leg from a distance and hitting them. Repeating it on another man. And another.
Three down. Three left.
"The fck! Who shot?!"
Everyone got tense, pulling their guns out and pointing at all kinds of directions. Shooting randomly at objects.
"I think it came from behind there!" someone yelled and a bullet hit a nearby equipment.
"Hurry and get the plane ready!" another voice echoed.
Yoongi shot another time, hitting one guy in the shoulder this time. Hearing him yell in pain. "There!"
They spotted him, but that didn't mean they could get him. Dodging each one of their bullets with his blade and slicing their weapons with ease while cutting their suits in a way he could twist them around. Immobilizing them in seconds.
As soon as the last one dropped down, he came to a halt. Chest raising and falling when the clicking noise of an unlocking gun was heard behind him. "Impressive."
He didn't have to turn around to know it was the sleezy looking guy in the navy blue suit talking. His hand adjusted its grip around the sword's shaft and he slowly turned around, facing the foreigner standing at the top of the jet's stairs. His gun pointing at him.
"But now I'll close the door, if you allow."
Yoongi swallowed, puffing out a breath. "Let her go first, then do whatever you want."
The man frowned, an amused laugh flowing from his lips then when he began to understand.
"Who? You mean the little thief? That's what this is all about?"
He waved his hand to someone inside the plane. Soon Soyeon's slouched figure appearing at the door frame. And her afflicted expression softened into a stunned one when seeing Yoongi standing there. Her eyes finally having that gleam back.
Her lips mouthed his name, not having the energy anymore to say it out loud or perhaps she was simply too afraid to do so. And he was about to offer her a smile when he froze, seeing sleezy guy's gun pressed against her temple, aiming at her now instead.
"If you want me to let her go I'm afraid it'll only be possible if I shoot a bullet right through her head," the man sighed disappointedly, "But you wouldn't want that right?"
"I wouldn't do that if I was you," Yoongi smirked then with confidence, his eyes piercing his, "Wherever you plan to take her to, she's supposed to be alive when arriving, right? Otherwise you would've already get rid of her."
Soyeon's eyes closed and she exhaled in relief. Feeling the cool metal leaving her skin.
"Smart guy. It's true my boss wants her alive." The engine had started, the turbines were turning. The plane was ready to start rolling into the runway if it wasn't for the still opened door. Time was running. "But he didn't say anything about injuries." His sly grin exuded pure evil as he dragged the gun from her head down to her leg. "So please back off now and let me close that door."
Yoongi remained silent, not even considering succumbing or make the slightest inclination. Staring at the man dead in the eye, causing him to become impatient. He exhaled tiredly, his gun pointing back at Yoongi now.
"Let's just ask her then. Should I shoot your little puppy or will you come without protest?"
"Don't listen to him. I can dodge any bullet," he quickly countered, giving her an assuring glance.
The man bending forward at this to whisper into her ear.
"You wanna find out?" he smirked. His finger already hovering over the trigger.
Soyeon gulped, a deep crease between her brows as she glanced at Yoongi and then at the man. This was what she had feared of happening if she let him get involved in her mess. He'd get in the crossfire and perhaps even get hurt or worse.
She didn't want that, none of that. She just wanted him to continue living a normal life.
If he had only listened, if he had only stayed away from her..
"I'm coming," she eventually breathed with no hesitation in her voice.
Yoongi's expression falling when hearing those words slip from her lips. "Don't!" he yelled perplexed. Taking a step forward only for a bullet to hit right in front of his feet.
"One more step and I won't be so generous," the man warned.
She gave Yoongi a weak smile. Eyes full of sorrow as she saw him standing there, holding her gaze with sadness and disbelief. "It's okay, don't worry." It was quite ironic and even humerous in a way, the fact she was the one comforting him. Although it seemed like she wanted to say much more than that when she blinked away a tear. As if she wanted to say:
this is my fault and I have to deal with the consequences.
But it wasn't her fault. Not in his eyes.
The man smirked triumphatically, but despite getting what he wanted, he didn't lower his gun. Instead he heaved it more, aiming at Yoongi's head. Noticing this, Soyeon instantly grabbed his wrist, spinning the gun away and twisting his arm around his body. It was one of the self-defense moves Yoongi had shown her. And before the man even realised what happened, she pushed the button next to the door. The stairs beginning to lift, her face along with the man's furious one disappearing behind them. And the last thing Yoongi caught her lips shaping was: I'm sorry.
The plane began moving, rolling out into the tarmac. And he stood there, watching it depart from afar without being able to do anything.
The memory of the last time he'd felt so useless and numb crossing his mind then, like an ugly arrow reminding him of his own mortality. The last time he'd felt like drawning in self-pity. The day his uncle had been murdered.
Feeling his breath sucked out of his lunges, he silently sunk down surrounded by the numerous unconscious bodies of those unknown men. And he allowed himself to take in the moment and accept his failures. Whether it was to save his uncle or Soyeon.
In the end, her being the one saving him.
He didn't know how long he was sitting there buried in thoughts or how much time passed as he let his self-loathing to take over.
Only when a pair of legs appeared in front of his vision, he snapped back to reality and looked up. Seeing no other than Jimin standing in front of him. Confusion written all over his face while looking around the area. "Alright, what happened here? It looks like a battle field!"
Yoongi's lips parted, his mind too clouded with frustration and desperation to comprehend why his friend was there. "How.. did you get here?"
Jimin shrugged nonchalantly, his eyes wandering to him. "Tracked down your phone, since you wouldn't tell me what's going on. And seems like it was the right thing to do. Just what happened here?"
His jaw clenched at the memory of what had taken place. Anew guilt and shame overcoming his chest and his gaze lowered. "They.. they got her.." he choked out. The words not wanting to leave his mind. Feeling too embarrassed to admit them out loud. "These guys got her because this.. this.. ugh this stubborn woman left on her own and then.. they got her right in front of my fcking eyes!" His voice was picking up, anger building with every word he said, "And I.. I failed. I thought I could make it but I failed and now they took her to who-knows-where. Maybe Europe. Maybe not. I don't know."
The hot rage in his chest getting replaced by fright at the realisation he'd probably never find her.
"Alright, then let's go get her back."
He blinked, processing Jimin's calm words.
"No, no, no there's no 'us' in this, I'll try finding her alone," he said sternly and got back on his feet. Brushing over his pants as Jimin snorted amused.
"You really think we'd let you go there alone? I'm definitely coming and Taehyung probably as well."
"You two stay away," Yoongi objected, shaking his head. "There's no need for you t-"
"Oh, Yoongi, don't you know me at all?" his friend pouted with a shake of his head, faking disappointment. "I'm definitely coming."
"No, Jimin, listen, you will not come. Am I clear?" Yoongi warned, pressing an index finger on his friend's chest. "I've got nothing to lose contrary to you guys. I won't let you risk getting -"
"No, you'll listen to me," Jimin huffed then, getting fed up with Yoongi's stubborness, "If it wasn't for you, we wouldn't even have something to lose. I owe you and Tae Bella's life and the least I can do is help you help this girl, who you clearly have feelings for."
Yoongi's hand lowered, falling down to his side. He swallowed hard and looked away, not wanting his friends to think they'd owe him anything because they didn't. But deep inside he knew he needed help. He had failed saving Soyeon when it was only twelve men. He definitely wouldn't have a chance if it was more.
His guilty conscious, however, kept telling him to refuse nonetheless. The risk simply being too high.
"You guys don't owe me anything," he mumbled, shaking his head. Jimin simply ignored him, though, and turned around. Beginning walking out of the empty airplane hangar. Making Yoongi huff as he followed.
"You know the moment we step a foot out of Taiwan, pops and his agents will be back on our tail." Contemplation creeping up his voice which Jimin immediately picked up on. Grinning at him with an unimpressed shrug. "So? Wouldn't be the first time. And even if they get us, we'd just escape like we always do."
They made their way out of the field and back to the lonely country road. Yoongi seemingly lost in thoughts as his eyes laid on the ground. And they stopped in front of Jimin's car parked at the entrance.
"Jimin?" he eventually spoke up again. The younger guy hummed with an arched brow as he unlocked his car, sliding onto the driver's seat. Yoongi frowned in concern. "Don't be an idiot. Seriously, it's fine," he tried arguing one last time.
But Jimin only slammed the door shut, starting the motor.
"Can't hear you, the engine is terribly loud!" he yelled purposely loud then through closed windows. Waving at him with a wide mischievious smile before Yoongi could even counter anything else. "See ya!"
And he drove off, calling up the third in the bunch.
»»»
It was way past noon when Taehyung's phone rang obnoxiously loud from the far back of the nightstand. For some reason, however, he didn't hear it or at least pretended not to, much to Cassandra's dismay as she got woken up by it on her free day.
Shuffling under his koala grip, which was definitely a nice thing in winter but quite stuffy in summer, she reached out and patted her hand around the nightstand until sensing the device. Accepting the call then in her half-sleepy state with a yawn, pressing it against her ear.
"Yeah?"
"H- Cas?"
"Huh, yeah. Jimin?" Her mind still too slow from sleep to fully process anything.
"Can I speak to Taehyung for a second."
"You can try," she lightly giggled then and turned around, "I don't know if he'll hear you though." She held the phone onto her husband's ear, soon hearing a deep hum. An indication he wasn't in a complete coma after all.
Her eyes closed and she was about to drift back to sleep when hearing an anew hum of acknowledge, sounding more like a growl this time. His hand grabbed the phone out of hers then as he got stirred up by whatever Jimin told him. Sitting abrubtly up then, the covers sliding off his chest as he rubbed his burning eyes, definitely regretting staying up till 4am with her. She watched his expression hardening and a line appeared between his brows.
"Alright," he eventually nodded and ended the call. Cassandra sitting up as well when seeing him walking away.
"Where're you heading to?"
With raised brows, Taehyung stopped in his tracks and turned around. Seemingly startled as if he'd forgotten about her and only now got reminded of her presence.
Slowly he sat back down, dragging a heavy sigh as an apologetic look softened his features.
"Remember that girl Yoongi brought over?"
Her eyes widened and she swallowed. Already feeling where this was leading to. "I-is she okay?"
"No.. not at all."
They exchanged a look and she could tell by his expression that it was serious.
"Alright, then what are you waiting for?"
"Cas.." He exhaled deeply and reached out to hold her hand, giving it a light squeeze. "If I do this, I'll need to leave the country and you know what that means.." His brows furrowed, giving her a stern look as his hand wrapped around hers tighter. "One word from you and I call it off. You know that. After all, we said we're over this kind of life."
Cassandra fell quiet, drawing her lower lip between her teeth.
The consequences were obvious, she knew them. It was the same ones that had always lingered around them ever since she'd met them in that hospital so many years ago. She knew them, she had always known them. And just like back then, she accepted them.
If they hadn't hindered her from getting involved and eventually falling in love with him, he should've known that they wouldn't be reason enough for her to hold him back now either.
Moreover, a civilian was in danger and Yoongi was their friend. Considering all the times he'd selflessly helped them, it was the least they could do. Especially since Taehyung was obviously willing to help anyway.
So she nodded, motioning with her chin to the direction of the door. "Go help them."
"You sure?" He still wasn't fully convinced, so she squeezed his hand back and gave him an reassuring smile
"Go. I'll be waiting here like I always do."
»»»
"Bella, no!"
"Oh c'mon, Jiminie, don't be such a party pooper," Arabella whined, crossing her arms in front of her like a child. "Let me come with you. Like in the good old days! It'll be fun!" Purposely squeezing her boobs together while giving him the pout and an innocent flutter of eyelashes. It was her go-to move to wrap him around her finger. Jimin knew that move too well and usually he didn't mind it, even allowing her to succeed with it. But not this time.
He looked at her sternly, shaking his head. "Bella, no, it might get dangerous and I don't want you to get in the crossfire," he reasoned with soft worry in his voice, "This is different from our little thefts here and there."
Her expression became sulkier and her eyes fell down at her bump. And for a moment she missed the life she'd had only half a year ago. Before the idiot in front of her had knocked her up.
She looked back at him with an evil eye, before eventually sighing and dropping down on the couch.
"I just feel so.. useless in a way and.. I don't know, boring? I can't do anything adventurous anymore while you still can." This time her pout was genuine as she did indeed feel disappointed and futile. It wasn't like she didn't understand his concerns or that she didn't care for the little human growing inside her, because she already cared for it more than anything, and yet she couldn't help but feel sad about her abruptly having to give up so much.
She was showing her vulnerable side, which was rare so Jimin could tell how it truly affected her. And he felt bad seeing her afflicted expression, taking a seat beside her and wrapping an arm around her shoulders to comfort her.
"Aw, love, I'd love to have you around. You know that," he mirrowed her pout. To which she only snorted, looking away.
"Yeah, sure as if. Bet you're glad about it. You can finally flirt around in peace again without me catching you."
He laughed at her adorable backtalk and grabbed her chin between his fingers, forcing her to look at him. His smile sweet when leaning in.
"I won't, I promise."
Arabella sighed into his kiss, something in his voice and the way his eyes smiled at hers convincing her. Because in the end, he was the only person she'd ever fully trust. So she eventually nodded.
"Alright.. but I'll tag along the next time!"
"Of course, love!" he chuckled, planting a peck on her cheek before getting his phone out. "And besides, you're never useless.." The photo of a man showing up on the display when unlocking it and he held it up to her with a grin. "..we could use your help on a little background check."
I just finished watching what if, and I was wondering, what if the creeps never became The creeps? What do you think they would be?
angry bc i typed all of this out and tumblr ATE all of my words (my phone turned off and it didn’t save and it was completely my fault) and i am SUING tumblr
Jeff - After living off of his parents for a while, he got a full time job at an animal shelter. He creates music on the side and has a handful of followers. He never talks to his family. He’s made his own between people he’s met online and friends he’s made in real life.
Liu - As the oldest, his parents pressured him into college. He pursued a law degree, and attempts to call Jeff often. Jeff always pretends to be working, busy, or doesn’t have his phone on him. He’s a lot more successful than his brother, being a popular lawyer and all, and even keeps in contact with his parents.
Jane - Became a healthy dose of a Government hired P.I. She’s amazing at her job and anyone from her childhood would never be able to recognize her. Jeff ran into her while she was stationed in her hometown for a brief moment. But she still hasn’t forgiven him for ruining her chance with Liu. It was nice to see him again. Maybe in another universe they’ll actually like each other.
Nina - She does fashion on the side, and hops from job to job, mostly in the fashion and makeup industry. She’s not quite sure where she wants to go in life.
Eyeless Jack - Carried onto pursuing his major as a surgeon. When the incident happened he was already in school, halfway through the path of a lifelong dream of his. After school, he’s one of the top surgeons in the state.
Ben - Just some dude in IT. He works for a cable company, and helps old ladies connect to the internet or restart their router from his cubicle. By the ghoul possessing his brain from the whole cult incident, it created a super-genius tech savvy ghost. But without it, he’s just some guy that grew up with an N64 and a love for computers. He also plays a lot of PC games, and has a discord of online friends. His best friend across the country works in an animal shelter and is free in the early hours of the morning.
Tim/Brian - Continued through college and lives a normal life on the daily. Brian has a major in film history, and Tim graduated with a psychology degree.
Toby - Lyra still ended up dying somehow, but as a less exciting meningitis case as opposed to a car crash caused by Slender. Toby still stood up to his father, and ended up escaping with his mom to a new life not too long after. He has a degree in childcare and works with kids, he also has a nice girlfriend that he’ll marry one day.
Kate - Full-time baker. After moving out of the woods of West Virginia, she moved across the country into a small city where a baker took her under her wing. She was taught how to bake, make coffee, and run a shop. They eventually fell in love and got married. :)
Clockwork - The baker. She opened a shop in the city to escape her abusive home. It was a hit with cute animal themed bread biscuits and cakes.
Laughing Jack - Technically he was an angel gifted to Isaac, but maybe in a normal universe he was part of a traveling circus in the 1800s. Maybe in a normal universe he kept his colors.
Lost Silver - A repair tech. He has his own little shop in a rather large mall. He fixes phones, computers, gaming systems, he’ll even dabble with lights and TVs. The shop doubles as a card shop where people can play retro arcade games and pokemon tournaments.
Jason - A Universal Studios imagineer. He has unlimited potential for his ideas, and has one of the best animatronics worldwide, sporting for $19.2M. A human-like animatronic, taking on the role of a puppeteer that controls small marionettes.
Helen - A quite popular self-taught artist on the east coast, but on the side he paints murals on the sides of buildings for businesses. He moved to America with his grandparents after the bullying in his homeland got too terrible to handle. His mother got the help she needed.
Hobo Heart - A pop-emo heart-throb of the Y2Ks. He got his heart broken and never let it go. Created a hit song about catching his girlfriend cheating and calling a cab, while he’s taking a smoke, and she’s taking a drag. And he’s going to bed and his stomach is siiiick, now she takes off her dress now-
Sally - Destroyed the monarchy and grew up to become the president of England. Achieved world peace. She still has tea parties. ALT: Became the CEO of a sock puppet company.
Intro Post!💀🦇🕸🕯
Hey there! Figured I'd finally make one of these in case anyone who stumbles on this blog wonders what it's all about.
As it says in my blog description, this is an online space where I can compile and organize imagery, info, and anything else that inspires me related to the novel I'm developing. At least that was the original motivation for making this, but I'm definitely wanting to post some original content surrounding the story and the characters in it soon! This imaginary world has been obsessing me for a few years now, and I'm honestly chomping at the bit to share it with others.
What you'll see on here:
Images related to: gothic lit, the regency period in Europe/Britain, the late 16th/early 17th century, some earlier 18th century, ancient and prehistoric cultures, paganism, the occult, witchcraft, fairies, folklore, the countryside/forests, autumn, Halloween, demons/devils, romantic fashion, screenshots and gifs from films, illustrations/other artists' art that inspires me, and any other random pic that speaks to me or that gives me an idea even vaguely related to the story.
Text posts relating to: all the same subjects above, plus quotes from poetry and literature, other stories that inspire me, and writing advice posts/memes.
Hopefully soon: posts introducing my characters and sharing concept art, ideas, research I've done, who knows what else??
***Content warning for some imagery that may be disturbing (as can be expected, I guess, from a horror aesthetic/theme).***
What the novel's about:
It's [going to be] a gothic/dark fantasy/folk horror/historical fiction novel set in regency Britain and centering around the concept of Halloween and its origins/meaning. Think Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell meets Over the Garden Wall. Kinda. Characters include a bratty aspiring sorcerer, a demonic changeling who wants to be human, a witch, a sin eater, and a handsome devil. Over the course of the plot the question of whether the spirit realm(s) and mortal world should be kept separate will be a source of conflict.
I've had some aspects of this story/characters in my head since I was 14, so it's super special to me!
About me:
I'm an artist, writer, and musician. This is my first time trying to write anything as involved as a novel. I'm having loads of fun with it, though. I love music and reading and history, particularly fashion history, and anything related to the supernatural. The title of my blog is a reference to a song by Echo & the Bunnymen (though I think it's actually an inaccurate lyric :P ).
Ficton books I've been reading lately: Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke, The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón, Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles books, Edgar Allan Poe short stories
Nonfiction books I've been reading: The Devil and All His Works by Dennis Wheatley, Celtic Mythology by Philip Freeman, The Making of Victorian Values by Ben Wilson, Occult Features of Anarchism by Erica Lagalisse, Halloween by Lesley Pratt Bannatyne
Some musical artists I'm into recently: Cranes, Kate Bush, The The, The Smiths, Fiona Apple, Alex G, Caroline Polachek, Imogen Heap, Depeche Mode, Fad Gadget, Pinback, Steeleye Span, The Cleaners From Venus, Suzanne Vega, The Garden, Jessica Pratt
Visual Artists I've been thinking about lately: Edward Gorey, Aubrey Beardsley, Nicole Rodrigues, Francisco de Goya, Leonora Carrington, Brian Froud, Wendy Froud, Willam Blake, Edvard Munch, Harry Clarke
Some of my favorite films: The Witch, Valerie and Her Week of Wonders, The Wicker Man (original), Meshes of the Afternoon, Days of Heaven, The Thief and the Cobbler, The Masque of the Red Death
Regardless of why you're here, I sincerely hope you enjoy browsing around, and feel free to say hi! :) I would love to link up with other writers on here and make some new pals. Also feel free to like this post and I'll give you a follow!
Oops, Come Dine With Me
Tumblr media
It's @taznovembercelebration day 7! Today I got "Cooking" and drew another card, "Bakery AU"
You can read yesterday's prompt here and today's below.
-
Taako answers the phone, tucks it between his shoulder and ear, grabs the cookies, and closes the oven door as quietly as possible with his knee. "Go for Taako."
"Tah-kow, darling, how are you?" Asks an overfamiliar voice. Definitely one of the twins from the production company, Taako isn't sure which one, maybe Edward?
"Cha'boy's just wonderful, thank you so much for asking. How about your good self?" Taako rolls his eyes, but it’s worth playing the game as long as this pays off.
"I'm splendiferous, just peachy, and so thrilled to tell you the outcome of your interview."
Taako waits, there's so much riding on this. If he can just get the money he can afford the bakery. There's no way he's letting Jenkins get it instead, but Jenkins has family money and Taako has one sister who’s as broke as he is. If Jenkins gets it Taako's going to have to leave, going to have to charm his way into another restaurant or bakery because boy does he not have the qualifications for it. His macarons can only take him so far in life. But if he gets to own the shop? Then he can branch out. Taako can bake better than anyone, but he cooks too. He's a baller chef and once the bakery is his he can prove it.
"Are you still there dear?" Edward asks, Taako's fairly sure it's Edward, not that he’ll gamble and use his name yet.
"Yeparooni."
"Aren't you going to ask what the decision was?" Edward sounds pissed off, but Taako hates playing games. It's worth it though, well, if he's got the spot.
"Sure. Did cha'boy knock yours socks off?"
"We were impressed by your skills, and very intrigued by your husband's menu theming - a fan of the macabre you said?" Shit. He didn’t think they were going to ask about it… maybe Taako didn't completely totally and fully think this plan through.
"He sure is!" Taako says brightly. "Big fan of death. Loves a goth bird too, you can probably tell." Taako had channelled him hard when he wrote that menu.
Edward laughs, polite and insincere. "Yes, well, such a shame he couldn't make it to the interviews."
"Mmhmm." Taako replies, attempting the most mournful voice he can muster. "It was deeply difficult to do something so important without him there, but, you just can't argue with explosive diarrhoea, can you?" Well, hopefully he wouldn’t.
Edward makes a choked noise of disgust on the other side of the phone and it fills Taako with vindictive glee. Serves him right, honestly - how dare he ask Taako about the husband he’s entering Couples Come Dine With Me with and mentioned multiple times throughout the interview.
"How..  ah... romantic." Edward's clearly struggling not to let his disgust shine through and failing miserably.
"Thank you, we're very deeply in love." Taako says, doing his best impression of Taako Tacco: married guy.
Edward chuckles. "I'm sure you are, and that you'll be delighted to hear that you get to demonstrate that love to the nation - you’ve been selected for the show!”
Edward’s so effusive that Taako feels he should do more to celebrate than a silent fistpump. “Wowwee! Golly gee! What wonderful news!! I’m jumping for joy!” Taako does jump, three times, just in case Edward can hear somehow.
“I’m so glad you’re excited. We’ll just need you and, Kravitz to meet with the producers to hand in your final menu and we can discuss filming your sections.” Edward’s in business mode now.
“Just to check…” Taako ventures. “... just in case, you know, it comes up, what would happen if my beloved, darling Kravitz were still too unwell to take part?” Taako tries to sound as innocent as possible, it’s a perfectly ordinary question, anyone would ask it.
Edward laughs once. “He won’t be, Taako.”
“I’m sorry, what?” That sounded like they’d marionette his corpse round if he tried to back out.
“It’s <i>Couples</i> Come Dine With Me, Taako. No husband, no shot at the prize, we’ve got back up couples.”
“Uh huh.” Says Taako, cool, totally normal, nonchalant, in fact. “So, if he were ill, could I bring a friend? My sister would do it.”
“That’s not really the kind of show, not to judge of course, but the couples do have to be legal. Anyway, ta ta! Watch out for the email from production.”
Edward’s gone. Taako stands alone in the kitchen with a tray of cookies and the mess he created. He pulls out his phone:
Taako [15:27] Hey Krav, wanna get married?
Outside of my usual update posts, I try not to talk about my Marshall collection too much. I'm often worried someone might get jealous if I bring it up a lot, or that others may see it as me trying to brag... or, in the case of someone on Twitter, use it as an excuse to whine about a character they don't like! However, while looking over my shelves to find spots (heh) for my latest purchases, I realized something that I felt was worth talking about...
My collection's becoming a time capsule, huh?
PAW Patrol is ten years old now, and throughout its history, we've seen so many toys, plush dolls, and other types of merchandise based on its characters, films and themes. However, once these products fulfill their purpose, most of them disappear, never to be seen on store shelves again (at this point, you'll have to hope you can get lucky and find them on Ebay or something). Granted, this isn't a new concept, as companies have been doing this before any of us were born. But whether it's a figurine based on a subseries, a candy-filled tin cup, or something else entirely, many of these products are now starting to become lost in time.
Tumblr media
Take this ornament, for instance. When I first found out about it, I could only find a single picture of it on an old page on a Sears website (listed as "out of stock" for many years). If you go looking for it now, you likely won't find anything about it anywhere. Unless I'm mistaken, the only place you'll see it now is... well, on my account.
Tumblr media
How about lunch boxes based on particular themes? I feel like Sea Patrol was pretty big for a while, but with the launch of Aqua Pups, you probably won't see any of its illustrations anymore. There's also that figurine and plush doll of Marshall wearing his winter Sea Patrol coat... which popped up once and then never again.
Tumblr media
How about this product? It was never sold in the USA, so I had to import it from the United Kingdom. I still think it's one of the coolest items in my collection, since whoever manufactured it clearly put in the extra effort to make it look quite accurate to the character... and it's just a shampoo bottle! It was made in 2016, so you won't see too many of them anymore, especially unopened and in good condition. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if only a handful exist now.
Tumblr media
What about the old plush designs? Some have floppy legs, while others can stand on their own. Now that Spin Master's switched to a new style, you likely won't see these in stores anymore. Some websites might still sell them, but otherwise, they're a thing of the past now.
Tumblr media
How about my Ready Race Rescue theatrical poster? Yes, believe it or not, it actually played in some! As far as I'm aware, these posters were never sold in stores, which means they were made specifically for use in theaters. Once the mini-movie drove ran its course, most of them were thrown away. I was fortunate someone not only kept one, but also put it on Ebay, too. To be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if this is one of the few that still exists.
Tumblr media
I could surely go on about the many other products we'll likely never see in stores again, but no doubt we'd be here all day. Again, this isn't anything new or surprising, since the old always gets pushed out in favor of the new at some point or another. But hey, just because something is old, that doesn't mean it should be forgotten! Honestly, I like tracking down these older products and, in a way, preserving them so they can be viewed by fans once again... especially if it involves a favorite character of mine!
Of course, it's difficult to say if any of this will mean anything in the future. PAW Patrol is big, but it's no Mickey Mouse or Star Wars. I have to imagine a Pup-Fu Marshall toy from 2015 can't compare to a Luke Skywalker action figure from 1977. Thus, I have to wonder... will PAW Patrol ever become just as big, or will it inevitably conclude and simply fade from our minds as the years go by? Will anyone look back at these toys and see them with the same level of fondness? It's possible that, in ten or twenty years from now, everything I've purchased will only be worth a dollar or two at a Goodwill or yard sale. Perhaps my collection's only good for collecting dust?
Well, even if that's true, I don't mind. These items are linked to a character I love, so regardless of how the future views them, they'll all remain special to me. Perhaps, in the end, that's all that matters. :)
(Archive) Animated movie of the day: Howl's Moving Castle (Hauru no Ugoku Shiro, 2004)
Originally posted: January 7th, 2023 When adapting a book to the realm of cinema, the beauty of the work is often lost in translation: Missing characters, trimmed down side plots or simply a compact interpretation of the plot that loses all and any impact. In other cases, however, it's this compromise what lets the film find it's own unique beauty, and with a bit of luck one as powerful as the source material.
Directed by Hayao Miyazaki and loosely based on the eponymous 1986 novel by Diana Wynne Jones(the first in the Wizard's Castle series), it tells the tale of homely hat maker Sophie Hatter, who gets cursed by the Witch of the Waste to become an old woman. In order to break the curse, she sets to find Howl the Wizard who travels across the land in a magic castle with the power to walk like a living creature. Adventure, self discovery and romance ensue.
And the similarities between the two stories kind of end there, as the film is in many ways nothing like the book. While some plots are missing and characters altered, the most notorious change has to be the war: a mere backdrop of the novel that was nothing but a few short sentences takes now a heavy spotlight that dramatically alters the thematic core of the story.
All of this would be a cardinal sin for most adaptations, a sentiment shared by some of the book fans. But I already presented my stance here: the beauty of this film comes from said differences. While the novel's critique of gender roles takes a back seat, a woman's self affirmation isn't a contradiction to this, nor is it the critique of war to the novel's exploration of social class, or the appeal for love and selflessness.
Even with its admittedly odd pacing, the romanticism is still enveloping, not hurt in the slightest by its jaw dropping visuals and Joe Hisaishi's melancholic yet uplifting score. Not for nothing it's Miyazaki's personal favorite: a film about why life is worth living.
Tumblr media
I don't think I need to introduce this music piece to anyone, but the main theme of the film Merry-Go-Round is probably Joe Hisaishi's finest work and given his body of work that's a monumentally tall order. Capable of evoking a sense of nostalgia and longing for a place and era that don't even exist, it still manages to capture a wonderous sense of love and hope for the future. A seemingly impossible contradiction in musical form, it's waltz foundation is a delight to the ears.
youtube
And in case you're wondering… Diana Wynne Jones loved the movie, so any purism about her intentions being mangled or else seems trite.
Psych anon (I love that I can make a play on words and make it look like psychic lmao, that was such a terrible joke, I'm so sorry).
First, I'm loving that people ask for my input and I'm always here to provide it. Don't be shy, if anyone (including you mod) wants to ask questions or ask me to analyze their behavior I'm here for it.
Anyways, I wish I had a longer video than that one, but with this tiny clip here are a few things that I noticed (please know this is the first time I've seen T with his gf so yeah, I'm going to risk and make an assessment solely on that which isn't something I'd normally do but considering everything I'm going to make exceptions). In this particular case, he's somewhat distant physically from his gf but also seems amused by her antics. However, he was paying more attention at the camera than he was paying attention to her. Maybe it was because of the fact that he knew he was being filmed, but only he and her seem to acknowledge it's existence. I can't make too many assumptions with just this small clip, but I did find that interesting because let's say we compare his interactions with R during interviews. Whenever she's doing something he might fund amusing/sweet/interesting his body language will engage with her and its almost like he forgets he's being recorded so there's that.
Now, let's talk R and J. I had to watch it a few times and I'm still unsure where Rachel's eyes were focusing on. I can't tell if she was looking at some point behind T's gf, if she was looking at J, or somewhere else, but J appears to be as he always seems to be whenever he's with her, not really quite there. Again, R is apparently looking at him while he's drinking and not even paying attention to her. I'm not going as far as saying he's uncomfortable, but he's not fully present in the moment either which seems to be a recurring theme whenever we see him with R.
As for R, she does this little movement of kind of leaning her had back and her eyes follow the same movement. It's almost imperceptible and I had to watch it a couple of times to notice it. Maybe she was trying to get comfortable, maybe her back was bothering her, but tbh it almost looks like she's subconsciously "leaning in" to see what T is doing.
Just right after she does this thing with her mouth that I can't find the word for in English given it's my second language that it MIGHT be a signed of annoyance and frustration, note that I said might. And right after that it's the first time we see her eyes drifting away from that general direction (that's is the one thing I'm still not sure about in when it comes to her pattern of behavior and why she might've done).
I'm so sorry I'm annoying anyone with the amount of words lmao.
LOL @ at the terrible joke, please, Psych.
You’re famous on this blog, people have been summoning you here :)
I wonder who filmed this? It seems like a friend of theirs because they tagged her in the post. Maybe a wrap up party for the film since it was in Berlin too? If it’s their friend then that’s why only T and his gf acknowledge the camera?
Guess T invited his gf to hang out with some of the cast. Hmm.
But yeah, she winks at the camera and then turns to see what T is doing but he keeps his focus on the camera and not her. They have some distance between them too.
To me, R is looking at what T is doing while purposely ignoring the camera and looks amused by T’s face maybe? J, per usual, is clueless and zoned out lol.
Is it just me or does the party have a weird vibe to it? Could be that everyone is drunk and tired lol but everyone is in their own world.
Do you have a guess as to why J follows T’s gf but R doesn’t? They’ve met a couple of times now. Here and for Halloween (they dressed as Scooby Dog)
And you’re not annoying at all, I appreciate long posts!!!! :D
Episode Ten: Random Rewatch Observations
Here we go. I’ve honestly held back so long from doing this one, in part because I never want to series to end, but also I had to gear myself up emotionally for the trauma...
1. God is it any wonder Little looks so miserable when you see the vast expanse of grey nothing he’s staring out at? There’s no real hope left but no real choice but to keep going.
2. Also strikes me that wee George Chambers is the last Boy standing, isn’t he? Young and Evans are dead, Golding’s gone to the dark side.
3. It’s so cruel of them, Le Vesconte especially, to let Little go on his inspirational rant before they drop the truth bomb about the vote but it’s also clear to see why it’s done that way. If they’d discussed it privately beforehand then each could’ve argued their case, and Little might more easily have been able to refuse (for all the difference it would make in the end). But telling him about it right out in public, in amongst all the men, is very deliberate and completely forces his hand. Just godawful!
I also have to wonder if it’s that old problem of them sticking so rigidly to rules and procedure again, even unconsciously. He’s the highest-ranking officer now, perhaps it’s protocol to wait until he speaks first?
4. Note that he says “two able-bodied lieutenants” here. Like, it would be one heart-breaking thing if deep down they resented Jopson his new position, didn’t see him as equal, but they do! They clearly see him as one of them and that’s worse because they leave him behind anyway!
5. God they’re all so deliberate in the way they talk about things as well, like they’ve been rehearsing it and justifying it to themselves over and over again. The ill won’t be ‘left behind’, they’ll just ‘stay’.
6. Might just be me but I believe the pitch of the title theme has been lowered significantly in this episode – a sign of their sharp, terrible descent? I’ll need to go back through the other episodes at some point and note if it’s altered at any other point, but I don’t think it is.
7. Oh Goodsir, baby girl! He’s so shaky and sore and unsteady on his feet and clouded in his mind already here, it’s gut-wrenching.
8. Also interesting to note what he remembers about David Young, even if he can’t remember his name – “he was afraid, he wanted us to run”. Young’s death was awful and memorable enough on its own, but it’s got to be extra-traumatic as a doctor, I think – to see someone so afraid and know that even with all your knowledge and skill, you can’t do anything about it.
9. The piles of cans left outside the tent are just a complete slap in the face, they really are - serving only to comfort those leaving, not those ‘staying’ behind who, with the exception of Jopson, are completely unable to leave the tents to get to them anyway.
10. Something about Goodsir dying with no shoes and just his little woolly socks on is so personal and horrendous to me.
11. I’m sure I’ve read somewhere that they had a better on-screen death for Tozer but ran out of time/money to film it and that’s a tragedy to me. Like, even if it was just him going down swinging and getting a good shot in as he goes (as the off-screen sound-effects imply here) then I’d love to have seen it. Tozer and Hodgson in particular are both worthy of redemption in my book.
Does anyone know more specifically what they’d planned for Tozer’s death?
12. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again – “Close…” takes EFFORT. I have to imagine that a person literally seconds from death would be hard pushed to speak at all or make any sound beyond vague groans of pain, but he doesn’t just do that. He puts physical and mental effort into croaking that one last and very specific word and the fact is that we’ll never truly know why!
13. Another thing we’ll never know is why he’s separate from the others too. It echoes Hodgson’s isolation actually, now that I think about it – just as with the chains, we don’t know if it’s something he did to himself or something that was done to him by the others, and we’ll never know.
14. Also! Crozier would it kill you to touch the man! That hand holding back by mere millimetres from brushing through his hair will haunt me the rest of my days. Here’s a man who throughout the entire story has been well-established as showing comfort, affection, and solidarity through physical touch and he doesn’t truly get it in return even in his final moments! (I know Crozier touches his shoulder etc. but it’s just not the same to me and I’m still distraught!).
An idol and his makeup artist.
This isn’t a series, just a oneshot of an idea I just had.
Tumblr media
If there is one advice I would give to any makeup artist…
Don’t work for idols.
I know, saying this may sound like they would be the worst to work with, but that isn’t the case. At least, not in my case… I have studied different styles of makeup for a long time, so to put my work on someone who will perform and be admired by thousands of people fills me with pride. And, in a way, makes me feel important. Then, what is the true problem with working for an idol as their makeup artist? Well…
“Cut! I believe this second shot was a lot better. Take a 5 minute break to fix the makeup.” I heard the director shout, which immediately pulled me out of my thoughts. The lights towards the set were turned off and so was the music.
Right at this moment, the most recently famous group of idols “serViceS” were filming their second music video. They had debuted not too long ago and yet they had built a large amount of fans in less than a week. Perhaps that had something to do with the theme their group had. Just like their name, this idol group had the intention to ‘serve’ their fans with compliments, sweet words and love songs. I joined the staff for this group at their debut, and I can’t say that I don’t feel lucky to be part of the makeup artists, but…
I don’t think my heart can handle being around these men, specially the one that I am in charge of.
“Ah, filming for two hours straight truly can be tiring. But knowing that I will have this angel taking care of me, even if for only five minutes, all my fadigue fades away.” I hear that melodic voice coming closer, I sigh to myself to calm down. When it comes to him, I need to be patient.
I quickly pulled my mask up in case anyone with a camera came close to film him while he is getting ready for the next shots, already holding a towel in my hands to wipe his sweat.
“I am not taking care of you, I am only making sure you look perfect for the video.” Despite me trying my best to be dismissive, this man really didn’t need me to do much for him to be perfect.
All the members of this group were perfect, but this one was different. The idol in question is called Shingen Takeda, a man that is known for having the mature charm of the group and the one who is the most flirty. When I first joined the makeup crew, I truly wondered if his personality was only an act for the public, which is very normal for idols. Actually, I expected that from all of them, considering that they all act very sweetly and affectionate on stage. What baffled me is that this isn’t an act.
I frowned as I patted his face with the towel, a bit frustrated that his makeup got messed up from the sweat, and… you know, this man is way taller than me. Five minutes really isn’t enough to redo everything and give the idol time to rest, it makes me wonder how he manages to have so much energy in him. Probably sensing my frustration, Shingen lowered his face down to help me reach him easier. “Better, Angel?” He asked with that infuriatingly handsome smile on his face.
“Yes, thanks…”
“I hate to make you work all over again on my makeup, but sweating while filming this is inevitable.” I knew it wasn’t his fault, and it’s not like I had to do much for his makeup. Rather, I felt more worried than anything.
“Don’t worry about it, i will try to finish this quickly.” After I was done cleaning his face, I started doing small retouches to his makeup, trying to ignore the awkward position we were in.
His face is too close..!
“Something wrong, angel?” He asked with a look of concern, he probably sensed me being nervous. I shook my head and lightly pushed him away, I was lucky that my mask was hiding my blushing cheeks. I looked away from him to calm my heart, it’s hard to be able to hold his gaze.
“Your makeup is done. It’s not like it took me too long.” He was perfect already, I barely had to do anything.
Shingen smiled again, I could sense his teasing gaze towards me. This man can notice anything it sometimes scares me, but I am lucky he doesn’t push his teasing too far.
“You work very hard to make me look my best, I can’t be more thankful to you than I am right now.” What is this man talking about now? When I looked up to look at his face, his previous teasing smile was now a gentle gaze. That… caught me off guard.
“What… I am just doing my job, nothing impressive about that.” Before I could move away, I felt his hand gently patting my head. This… would feel really awkward in any other occasion, but luckily no one was looking our way. Is he doing this because of how small I am when compared to him? “A-anyway, before you go back, here.” I shoved a cup I bought on my way to work, it was a caramel Frappuccino, his favorite.
He seemed taken aback by my gift, I couldn’t look him in the eyes due to my embarrassment. I just wanted to do something nice since he worked so hard on his career.
“Selena, I hope you continue being my makeup artist in the future.” He happily took the drink from me, drinking it with delight. I crossed my arms and huffed.
“Right, remember to do a good job if you want more of th-“ before I could finish my sentence, I felt him pulling down my mask to kiss my cheek. That certainly left me speechless.
“Then, I must do my best to receive more of my angel’s blessings.” With that, he walked away while drinking his sweet beverage. Meanwhile I was left there with cheeks more red than strawberries.
Yeah… don’t work with idols, specially idols like Shingen. Your heart might not be able to handle it.
