Do you have recs for adaptations of classics that have been made queer? Not really looking for fairytales since I've found plenty of those on my own but like (even more so than they already were) queer Jane Austen or Shakespeare works (though really any classic would work)
Yep! Here are a whole bunch of YA ones, which you can also find here: https://lgbtqreads.com/young-adult/ya-by-trope-theme-setting/:
His Hideous Heart ed. by Dahlia Adler (various works by Edgar Allan Poe)

As I Descended by Robin Talley (Macbeth)
Outrun the Wind by Elizabeth Tammi (Atalanta myth)
Here’s Adult SFF, which is mostly fairytale but just in case, and which you can find here: https://lgbtqreads.com/sff/spec-fic-by-subgenre/:
Thorn by Anna Burke (Beauty and the Beast)
Nottingham by Anna Burke (Robin Hood)
Peter Darling by Austin Chant (Peter Pan)
In the Vanishers’ Palace by Aliette de Bodard (Beauty and the Beast) Miranda in Milan by Katharine Duckett (The Tempest)
Cinder Ella by S.T. Lynn (Cinderella)
*She Who Became the Sun by Shelley Parker-Chan (Mulan)
*Malice by Heather Walter (Sleeping Beauty)
These five books are all specifically Pride & Prejudice: https://lgbtqreads.com/2018/07/18/fave-five-lgbtq-takes-on-pride-prejudice/ and you can find Emma done by Tamsen Parker in If I Loved You Less.
I also must mention that Nghi Vo is doing an upcoming Gatsby reimagining with a queer Jordan Baker MC called The Chosen and the Beautiful.
Anyway there’s definitely a lot more - I see as I go through the site I have a lot of updating to do in this realm - but there’s a whole bunch of start with, including some Shakespeare and Austen!

In the Sea sung by Nozomi ft Rain
Hello, here is a parody of In the Clouds by the very talented Katharine-Lynn Rose. ( here is the original song )
Nozomi belong to me
Rain belongs to Midway/NRS
enjoy
[Nozomi, spoken]
Wait til you see it Rain.
The temple of knowledge is the most beautiful temple in all the realms
[Rain, spoken]
Nozomi, I know you’re excited
But it’s been 100 years since you’ve been home
A lot could change in all that time
[Nozomi]
If we knew of a realm that could be
Brighter than the souls we’re given
We’d give my staff a whirl and we’d
Escape from this old world we live in
Come hold my hand
We’ll find that land
In the sea
We’re free to sail wherever
In the sea
We’re free to be whoever
In the sea
As long as we’re together
In the sea
[Rain]
But we live in some realms that aren't
Free from bloodshed, war, and violence
Zomi, you know I’m your guy who’s here to
Help you find the proper guidance
‘Cause life’s unfair
Just be aware
[Nozomi]
In the sea
We’re free to sail wherever
In the sea
We’re free to be whoever
In the sea
As long as we’re together
In the sea
In the sea life is fun
With no burdens to bear
In the sea, in the boat
Sailing wide in the breeze
In the sea
In the sea
In the sea..
In the sea...

Filling in the Gaps in the Katherine Howard's story
"We do not know for certain if Henry VIII originally intended to keep Katheryn in prison for life. In January 1542, an Italian diplomat, Giovanni Stanchini, reported from Fontainebleau in France to Cardinal Farnese “that the King meant to condemn the Queen and an aunt of hers who helped her, to perpetual prison.”
We do not know how Stanchini came by this information, or what happened (if anything) to change the King’s mind about the Queen’s fate. A theme I was unable to develop in the novel, because it was written entirely from Katheryn’s viewpoint, was the possibility that Henry VIII did not want her to die. He had loved her so much, and his grief went so deep, that he may have balked or wavered about having her executed. He was lenient in his treatment of her: he did not send her to the Tower while her offenses were investigated, but to the dissolved abbey of Syon. He did not immediately deprive her of the status of queen, which he did only after her affair with Culpeper came to light. It was said that “he would bear the blow more patiently and compassionately and would show more patience and mercy than many might think—a good deal more tenderly even than [Katheryn’s] own relations wished.” He was unusually merciful in commuting Culpeper’s sentence—this was a privilege customarily extended only to peers of the realm. He kept six of the jewels Katheryn had worn; they had perhaps been her favorites. But the reformist radicals who dominated the Council and had brought down the Howards at a stroke were not about to collude in their restoration. Under the pretext of sparing Henry pain, they took charge of the investigation with zealous, unremitting thoroughness and a studied determination to find evidence of adultery. The Council carried out the investigation on its own, with the King sanctioning further action as necessary. Having raged against Katheryn in Council, then broken down in tears, Henry removed himself from the investigation, “with no company but musicians and ministers of pastime.” In his grief, he refused to deal with business, which allowed his councillors a free hand. He did not order that Katheryn be tried in court, but referred the matter to Parliament. In a speech to Parliament, Lord Chancellor Audley “aggravated the Queen’s misdeeds to the utmost,” as did everyone else involved in the investigation of her offenses. The councillors’ insistence on not publicly mentioning the precontract with Dereham, “which might serve for her defense,” shows how determined the reformist faction was to bring down the Queen. An annulment was not enough, for there remained the risk that Henry’s anger and grief would abate to the point where he was ready to forgive his erstwhile darling. In Parliament, the Lord Chancellor expressed Henry’s concern that Katheryn “had not liberty to clear herself.” After she was condemned, “the King, wishing to proceed more humanely, and more according to forms of law, sent to her certain councillors and others of the said Parliament, to propose to her to come to the Parliament chamber to defend herself,” which was unusual in the attainder process. “It would be most acceptable to her most loving consort if the Queen could clear herself in this way.” Clearly, the lords were aware that the King was hoping she would do so. Giovanni Stanchini had heard that Henry “meant to condemn the Queen to perpetual prison.” The Imperial ambassador, Eustache Chapuys, wondered: “Perhaps, if the King does not mean to marry again, he may show mercy to her or, if he find that he can divorce her on the plea of adultery, he may take another thus.”
The unreliable “Spanish Chronicle” (perhaps not so unreliable in this case) stated: “The King would have liked to save the Queen and behead Culpeper, but all his Council said, ‘Your Majesty should know that she deserves to die, as she betrayed you in thought and, if she had had an opportunity, would have betrayed you in deed.’ So the King ordered that they should both die.” At the time of Katheryn’s fall, Henry would not hear of taking another wife, possibly because he could not come to terms with her loss. He was unlikely, at his age and in his state of health, to find again the kind of love he had enjoyed with her; all he now had to look forward to were encroaching illness, old age, and death. Understandably, his councillors might well have feared that he would relent and take her back. Petitioning Henry not to “vex himself with the Queen’s offense” and to give the royal assent to the Bill of Attainder by letters patent under his great seal, so that the Lord Chancellor could expedite matters in the King’s name, reflects a determination on the part of the councillors that their master should have little opportunity to relent, and that the Queen must die, “specially because the King could not marry again while she lives.” The lords were already begging and urging him to marry again, doubtless hoping he would take a reformist bride, which he in fact would do in 1543, when he married his sixth wife, Katharine Parr. The lords had their way. Katheryn died, and the King lifted no finger to save her." ~ Author's Note from KATHERINE HOWARD: THE SCANDA QUEEN by Alison Weir
Alison Weir's series of the six wives of Henry VIII have been delightful reads. But none in her series has been so captivating and heartbreaking as Katherine Howard: The Scandalous Queen. What she does for Katherine is something many of us have been yearning to see in popular media. The closest history buffs got to see of an honest and heartfelt portrayal of Henry's rose without a thorn was in the BBC 1972 movie "Henry VIII and his Six Wives" with Lynne Frederick as the doomed queen. Yet even with her outstanding performance, pop culture remained adamant in reducing Katherine to nothing other than a vainglorious, mean girl. Alison Weir's novel is an in depth character study that makes her more real to us than any previous depictions of her in fiction.
Moreover, she's honest in her portrayal of these real life figures, particularly her prime subject, Katherine Howard. Some historians and novelists make bold inferences to fill in the gaps while others prefer not to take any stand. Alison Weir is one of those rare historians that takes a (much needed) middle ground. It is somewhere in the middle, amidst all the wild theories surrounding the reasons for Katherine's licentiousness behavior and upbringing where the truth lies hidden, waiting to be uncovered.
When it comes to the latter, some will argue that she was no innocent kitten and got what was coming to her while others go to the other extreme and seek to exculpate her from everything she's accused. Regardless of where the truth lays, it is undeniable that Henry's young consort was the less prepared of all his consorts to her royal position. Yet, as Weir shows in her novel, she was fast adapting to her new role as Henry's wife, stepmother to his youngest children, and royal hostess. Besides her charity to Margaret Pole, Countess of Salisbury, there are other examples of kind gesture where she didn't think twice about using her position to help others. But as it often happens in these real life twisted fairy tales, she became caught in a web of religious and factional politics. Her end was tragic, made even more so when it came to Henry's indecision to sign her death warrant and afterwards, her acceptance of it.
As seen in her author's note, Weir shows a deep respect to her subjects. It is not just Katherine Howard that gets a fair treatment. Everyone else in her novel are given their fair dues.
It is for these reasons that makes this an essential read for every history buff and aspiring historian.

“His heart recently broken, plastic surgeon Danny Maccabee pretends to be married so he can enjoy future dates with no strings attached. His web of lies works, but when he meets Palmer – the gal of his dreams – she resists involvement. Instead of coming clean, Danny enlists Katherine, his assistant, to pose as his soon-to-be-ex-wife. Instead of solving Danny’s problems, the lies create more trouble.”
KATHARINE DANIELLE “KITTY” WILDE is TWENTY-NINE years old and A SECRETARY. She is currently SINGLE (divorced), and her endgame is KYDER.
“You asked for this.”
Kitty Wilde was born with a silver spoon in her mouth. She had everything handed to her and in return perfection was expected from her. She was a cheerleader, homecoming queen, the works. She did everything to make her parents proud and to keep a perfect and clean reputation until she ruined it in one night.
Kitty was sixteen dating the quarterback when she finally let him take her virginity. Kitty was very naive about these things and before she knew it she had a drawer full of positive pregnancy tests. She was terrified but found some hope in the situation when her boyfriend stepped up and agreed to help her raise their child. Kitty’s parents were not pleased and kicked her out. She was able to stay with her boyfriend on one condition. Once they graduated and were both 18 they had to get married. So Kitty worked her butt off finishing school while pregnant and having a newborn and once she turned eighteen and they got their diplomas they went to the courthouse and got married and soon were on their own.
Kitty was a stay at home mom while her now husband worked and everything seemed to be going well. When their daughter turned eight they decided they were finally caught up in life and in a place to have another child. Soon Kitty found herself pregnant with their son. This pregnancy was more difficult than the first as Kitty discovered her husband was cheating on her. Kitty did her best to try and make the marriage work and for a moment things were back to normal after their son was born. It didn’t last long though. Before their son was even six months old Kitty caught her husband cheating. She always threatened to leave but he had leverage over her. She didn’t have any work experience, how could she survive without him?
Kitty had had enough and started to look for jobs and managed to land a job as a secretary for a pediatrician. Her husband wasn’t too pleased but he let her go ahead and work. It took until Kitty was twenty-seven but she had saved enough, got an apartment, and soon after filed for divorce from her husband. It was a very rough time for the blonde as she was adjusting to the single parent life. Luckily, she made friends with a guy named Ryder and another named Blaine. Both she trusted and turned to when things got to be a bit too rough and she needed a pep talk to push through for her kids.
At twenty-eight Kitty’s divorce was finally final and her fight to have full custody of the kids had been won. She did agree to let him have them every other weekend and every other holiday. Despite how much he had hurt her she didn’t want to hurt the kids by completely taking their father away from them. Kitty has been divorced for a year now and she’s loving being a single mom and living for her kids. She finally feels like she’s matured in life and was ready to try dating again now that her daughter is 13 and her son is five but Kitty’s best friend had other plans. Kitty isn’t even really sure why she agreed to Ryder’s plan but she knows one thing. If it gets to be too much she’s out. No matter how much she may value him as a friend Kitty has vowed to never let a man run her life ever again.
CONNECTIONS.
RYDER LYNN → Kitty has been a close friend of Ryder’s for a while now. Somehow, Ryder convinced her to go along with his ridiculous plan to pretend to be his soon-to-be ex-wife. Kitty cares about him just enough to want to help him out. She knows this can’t possibly end well, but she’s willing to try. She trusts Ryder, which might end up being her downfall. Who knows.
BLAINE ANDERSON → Blaine is totally the cool, non-creepy uncle that Kitty actually loved for her kids to be around whenever they went over for playdates at chez Anderson. As it turns out, he’s an excellent person for Kitty to bitch and complain to whenever she needs to talk somebody’s ear off, and she offers the same to Blaine in return. And that’s just a beautiful friendship.
FINN HUDSON → Kitty never liked the idea of Ryder being a sperm donor for someone he didn’t really know. It just sort of weirded her out in a way she couldn’t explain, despite how everyone made it seem like it was this beautiful thing. Finn seemed to be the only person in the universe who agreed with her at that insemination party thing, though Kitty could see there was something more beneath the surface when it came to his thoughts on Marley. Regardless, though she and Finn have never particularly been close, Kitty sees things. Surely shit is bound to hit the fan, and when it does, Kitty can at least say Finn always had her side on the matter in saying ‘I told you so’.
✗ Kitty is currently TAKEN and played by ROSE (EST).

Smash?
Man, that show sure is a journey.
The music is amazing. The idea behind it is so cool. I love this take on musicals in a musical, it’s just awesome.
I adore the return of Debra Messing in literally anything I love because she will always be my Grace and she was a wonderful Julia I mean, aside from the part where they turned her into a cheat because I despise cheats and it broke my fangirl heart…
The story was so intriguing. I loved the concept behind Bombshell and I loved how that developed.
Personally, I think it got a little… messy and weird when Hit List joined the story and it just divided all the characters from one musical onto two musicals and had a War of Roses going on there. Just a little over the top.
But the pay-off was great. That Ivy Lynn in the end did get to play Marilyn - which she should have gotten right from the start because from the first number on she was the perfect Marilyn and should have gotten the damn role you asses.
Literally the only reason why she didn’t get the role was because Derek had a boner for Karen and it pissed me off so badly, but it’s also realistic because men in power think with their dicks. And are dicks.
Eileen was a treasure and I loved her and her dynamic with Julia and Tom. And Derek. The four of them were such a mess and it was just so much fun to watch them struggle through all of this.
This show definitely did one thing. It showed me that, no, the problem didn’t only lay with the writers of Scorpion, it really is Katharine McPhee who can’t act for shit. Seriously. I find that woman painful to watch when she’s trying to emote. Because she just can’t. Watch her closely, both on Smash as Karen and on Scorpion as Page. The only times she convincingly pulls off emotions is when she’s angry and upset. All the finer nuances of emotions… she is so flat and emotionless and struggles through it that it’s just painful to watch.
I love Ivy Lynn. She was awesome, she was the physically better fit for Marilyn, I liked her voice more, she was more behind the project than Karen. She really should have gotten the role from the start, but I also thoroughly enjoyed her struggle in the phase between having the role and getting the role back.
But let’s get to the reason of why I started watching this show.
Jeremy Jordan.
Because me and my best friend were very busy fangirling about Winn on Supergirl and she then proceeded to recommend this musical movie with him to me and I was all “Oh my gosh, he sings!”, which is then how I found this show.
It was devastatingly disappointing that he played the character I liked the least. And it didn’t help that his character had to have this romantic mess with the character I liked the second least.
You see, cheating isn’t the only thing where I have a zero tolerance policy. Drugs are too. And just… he was such an exhausting mess who kept sabotaging himself and his best friend and driving himself and his life against a wall. It wasn’t fun to watch, not in the general-fun way nor in the can-fix-it-with-h/c-fics. It was just annoying to watch, for me.
What I particularly cherish about this series is that it has an end. Nowadays, things just get canceled and never find any proper ending at all or they get an unworthy mess due to time-pressure that then fails to convey all that it wanted to say.
This show, I think, said all it wanted to and all it had to say.
It had the perfect ending and I love when a show has a worthy ending. I think, personally, that for what Hit List was, they oversold it a lot because it didn’t sound very… interesting and the songs from what we got to hear weren’t real hooks either and it was just such a rushed job. That, among all the other Broadway musicals - and Bombshell - it would be thaaat successful, I just can’t buy that. But at least Bombshell won all the really important awards, so that’s what makes it a worthy end in my books.
