#Little mermaid 2 return to the sea

I Choose ones that are actually sequels, not prequels or inbetweeners (sorry lion king 1/2 and Bambi 2). Also had to be direct to video, not theater release (I'm very sad I couldnt include Return to Neverland but it had a theatrical release).
Theres still others that fit this bill, but I selected ones that I've actually seen/own or ones I thought were "bigger"/better known

... so I just saw the live action Little Mermaid (finally got to the theatre in my tiny town) and all I have to say is that I biked home from the theatre giddily singing songs from Little Mermaid 2, and will happily (though impatiently) wait a decade or so to see it in live action too...

More information on my rewrite-the events leading up to Ariel being estranged from her family was just really BAD. I couldn't see Ariel truly becoming estranged from her family and the sea for anything less...she's very forgiving in canon, loves her family dearly, and even though being human is her dream and life goal she misses the sea.
(Tw abuse, gaslighting, death mention, imprisonment)
This is mainly Morgana's fault.
It started with passion aggression, disdain, and the like, but Ariel was used to that. But then it became worse, with Ariel's family actively trying to sabotage her attempts to become human, and saying that if she truly loved them she'd stay. And it escalates to Triton refusing to turn Ariel human. Ariel spends a few months unable to convince him to change his mind, and Triton also makes it so that Ariel cannot use the Trident to turn herself into a human. Eventually Triton pretends to give Ariel an ultimatum, her family or being human. But it's a fake deal, and King Triton is enraged when she chooses being human. He also has her guarded by her sisters, who won't let her go to the surface.
And it's the final straw for Ariel. It takes years (another factor in Ariel's anger) but Ariel eventually manages to secretly learn how to become human on her own, in a way Triton cannot undo.
Then she becomes human, and she erects a barrier around the sea (which makes her family unable to visit her). She also won't talk to her family, because she's angry at them and also afraid of being forced into being a mermaid and being trapped under the sea forever. The latter being the main reason why Ariel won't engage with the sea or her family ever. She simply will not risk it.
And anything sea related becomes a trigger for her.
That works!!! I think building a sea wall&banning Melody from the sea without ever telling her why, over just one death threat—from someone who was very easy to defeat—seemed like major overkill in the cartoon.
Also if the sea becomes a huge trigger for Ariel, imagine how hard it must be for her to rule a seafaring kingdom with Eric. I can imagine in that scenario , she probably gets away from the sea whenever she can.

Extra doodles of Melody with Ponyo and goofing around. I might make into a mini animatic.

Realized in both Little Mermaid and Little Mermaid 2, neither Triton nor Ariel bothered talking about things. Triton could have easily told Ariel why he hated humans, girl was sixteen she'd have understood. And Ariel could have easily told Melody why the wall and why she couldn't go into the water. Don't care that she said in the beginning she can't know about Atlantica and such. It's like hello talk to people!

This is a little tribute to the brilliance of Tara Strong, and features only a handful of her characters that were prominent in my childhood. (Melody was my first encounter with her talents!)

Did Chicken Run 2 remind anyone else of Little Mermaid 2 or am I just going insane?

I didn't know Ponyo was the cooler little mermaid?!!
Tumblr media
But in all seriousness I just re watched Ponyo and it just now hit me 😅😅 how similar the movies were besides a fish girl becoming human. I thought it was funny how
- both main characters were red headed fish/mer girls
-both form bonds with dark haired guys from land
-both go through their own tests of love in their movies
-both have overprotective father and many sisters
