Predictions for Someone to Cherish by Mary Balogh:

The heroine’s late husband, a popular and zealous vicar, has already been revealed to be a domineering and rigid spouse, but I think he also actually tried to drown the “bad” kid he’s supposed to have died saving.

The heroine’s overprotective father and brothers are shady. I believe that (a) her mother didn’t really die in childbirth and instead was banished or left the family because she couldn’t take their smothering or (b) at least one male relative is despised by the ton for doing something horrible (which is the real reason she never had a Season).

You never know with Mary Balogh! The heroine’s late husband could be Satan incarnate, or exactly what he appears to be right now. And her family could be a den of fucked-up guys, or just a little stuffy. I was kind of disappointed with the previous book in the series because there weren’t enough horrible dark secrets, so I’m hoping for some really awful stuff this time.

Eroi romance da sposare

Stavo pensando l’altro giorno quanto sia grande la differenza tra cosa ci piace leggere e cosa ci piace invece vivere in prima persona. Capita che ci piacciano storie melodrammatiche, avventurose, misteriose, ma nella vita reale mica vogliamo correrli veramente quei pericoli. Lo stesso vale per i protagonisti maschili dei romance storici se ci pensate. Almeno per quanto mi riguarda mi piace leggere di uomini tormentati, oppure gelidi, o libertini....ma nella vita reale li vorrei? No. Nella vita reale vorrei un uomo stabile, senza troppi problemi, magari simpatico oltre che bello, senza famiglie troppo problematiche magari. E tipi del genere mica sono facili da trovare nei libri romance!

Perciò ho deciso di farvi la mia persoanle lista di eroi romance da sposare. Naturlamente è molto soggettiva e segue i miei gusti personali, sono curiosa di sapere invece chi sarebbero per voi i personaggi da romanzo degni della vostra mano, perciò ditemelo nella commenti mi raccomando.

Trama: Coraggiosa  e volitiva, Freyja è stata allevata al di fuori dei canoni  dell'alta società. La sua vita scorre serena finché, durante una visita a  Bath, un uomo irrompe nella sua stanza e la implora di nasconderlo. Lui  è Joshua Moore, marchese di Hallemere, che affascinato da Freyja le  propone di fingersi la sua fidanzata e aiutarlo a mandare all'aria i  piani matrimoniali organizzati dalla sua famiglia. Per due persone  determinate a restare libere sarebbe un piano perfetto… se la passione  non si mettesse di mezzo.

La mia opinione: un uomo che sopporta Frejia va fatto santo subito. Lui trova adorabili e ironici tutti i suoi difettti, è sempre o quasi ottimista e solare, non si arrabbia facilmente. Coa chiedere di più, per me, lui resta da sempre il marito ideale.

- Charles Bingley,

Personaggio del romanzo: Orgoglio e pregiudizio, di Jane Austen

Trama:  I  Bennet vivono con le cinque figlie a Longbourne, nello  Hertfordshire.  Charles Bingley, ricco scapolo, va ad abitare vicino a  loro con le due  sorelle e un amico, Fitzwilliam Darcy. Bingley e Jane,  la maggiore delle  Bennet, si innamorano; Darcy, attratto dalla seconda,  Elisabeth, la  offende con il suo comportamento altezzoso. L’amore  trionferà comunque?

La mia opinione: Io un musone come Darcy, essendo già io una che parla poco e può essere musona, non lo vorrei. Meglio un solare e docile Bingley per una vita quotidiana più piacevole.

Trama: Stavolta protagonista del libro è Olivia, migliore amica e cognata di  Miranda. Olivia viene a sapere da voci del ton che il suo nuovo vicino  di casa potrebbe aver ucciso la sua fidanzata. Naturalmente non crede al  pettegolezzo, ma curiosa inizia a spiarlo. E lui, accortosi che lei lo  spia, la spia a sua volta……  

La mia opinione:  Veramente carino.Ciò che mi è piaciuto di più di questo libro sono senza  dubbio i protagonisti che, una volta tanto non si piangono addosso, non  si complicano la vita creandosi conflitti interiori, non si  meravigliano quando si innamorano….insomma sono due persone intelligenti  che si innamorano naturalmente e semplicemente, senza particolari  circostanze ad aiutarli o ostacolarli. Per questo lui per me è da sposare. E’ intellettuale, conosce le lingue ed è pure spontanemente romantico a momenti senza essere mai stucchevole. Qualche volta magari tradurrà cose interessanti legate alla politica attuale, che renderanno la nostra vita più interessante, ma non orrerà mai rischi reali come invece corrono le spie.

Lavora nell’istituto come insegnante, ma una fortuna del tutto inattesa sta per bussare alla sua porta: scopre infatti di essere figlia del defunto conte di Riverdale, nonché sua erede. Benché abbia sempre sognato di incontrare la sua vera famiglia, quando arriva a Londra la ragazza viene accolta piuttosto freddamente. I nuovi parenti sono tutt’altro che entusiasti di incontrarla, ma si trovano comunque costretti a introdurla in società. E il destino ha in serbo per lei un’altra sorpresa che risponde al nome di Avery Archer, duca di Netherby…

La mia opinione: ok, sposare un duca potrebbe essere impegnativo, come duchessa avrei un sacco di doveri, ma Avery è molto diverso dai soliti duchi. Sa il karate, ha avuto un passato lievemete difficile ma lo ha già superatao ama un sacco la sua famiglia, fa finta di essere un dandy ma sotto sotto è super cool invece e molto intelligente e soprattuto essendo stato bullizzato da piccolo e preso in giro per il suo aspetto dolce, è uno che non bada all’aspetto fisico e non bullizzerebbe mai nessuno imponendogli la sua volontà.

- Colin  Bridgerton,

Protagonista del libro: Un uomo da conquistare, di Julia Quinn

Trama: In segreto, Penelope Featherington ha sempre adorato Colin  Bridgerton, il miglior amico di suo fratello. Dopo aver speso metà  della propria vita a osservarlo da lontano, è convinta di sapere tutto  di lui. Finché non si imbatte nel suo più grande segreto, e con stupore  si renderà conto di non conoscerlo affatto…

La mia opinione: Colin a mio avviso è il meno complicato dei Bridgerton. Bello, ma non impossibile. Con pochi doveri famigliari non essendo nè il primogenito nè il secondogenito. ma ama viaggiare, leggere, scrivere.....è simpatico gli piace scherzare, devo dire altro? Ok magari a volte è un po’ troppo curioso o geloso, ma mai in modo inaccettabile. POtrebbe tentare di imporre la sua voltà? Forse sì, ma poi davanti a resistenza si arrenderebbe prima lui e non dovrebbe essere troppo complicato raggiralo dalla propria parte e fargli capire il mio punto di vista.

Tra i due è subito amore-odio: lei lo considera un arrogante cacciatore di dote; lui un insopportabile snob.Ma, si sa, prima o poi gli opposti si attraggono…

La mia opinione: in realtà qui Lachlan non semprerebbe materiale da marito, abbastanza impulsivo e scapestrato, nonchè a caccia di soldi.....ma alla fine dietro le apparenze ha una sua serietà, si preoccupa veramente dei suoi parenti e quando deve prebdere delle decisioni importanti può anche riflettere un poco...a volte, poi è simpatico affascinante e la sua dinamica con la protagonista funziona. I due sono molto diversi ma funzionano. E visto che io e la protagonista di questo libro caratterialmente abbiamo alcuni tratti in comune, anche tra me e lui optrebbe funzionare. Ma lo tengo tra le riserve però.

November Book Reviews: Thief of Dreams by Mary Balogh

I’ve been keeping up with Balogh’s rereleases of her traditional regencies over the last few years. This one, alas, was spectacularly unlikeable. The titular ‘thief of dreams’ is the love interest. He seduces the main character, Cassandra, on the day of her birthday-- when she’s set to inherit a fortune and a title in her own right (handwave handwave). The apparent love interest is bent on revenge on Cassandra’s (very dead) father, and he is going to inflict in on Cassandra, who knew nothing of the whole business.

Did I mention that there’s no Grovel? Not that a grovel would fix anything in this case. But he never apologizes for his frankly abusive actions. Here, in his own words, quoted from the book:

What a force of evil he had been in her life, he thought, looking at the slender hand resting on his cuff. She had been quite vividly happy on her birthday, the title and property hers--or so she thought--and her independence won on her majority. She had planned to remain unmarried and to prove to the world that she, a woman alone, could run both her life and her estate without a man’s guidance. 

He had taken the property from her, two weeks before she would have inherited it, and he had taken her freedom from her and even her person. Her person was suffering from the invasion of his child. He had taken her exuberance from her and even her dreams.

??? Execrable. Another addition to the “whoops, accidentally gothic horror” pile. It was probably solidly written, but it’s not like anyone would notice under (gestures wildly) all of This.
