Isle of Dogs fanart of Chief and Nutmeg with puppies. Since all the dogs are off Trash Island and back with their owners, Nutmeg finally feels secure enough to bring puppies into the world.
The puppy sitting next to Chief is NOT one of his puppies, it's his nephew, the puppy that Atari kept from Spot and Peppermint's litter. His name is Speckles and even though he lives with his uncle he still visits his dad and mom and siblings with Atari every chance they get. He idolizes both his dad and uncle and is obsessed with the story of how Atari and the dogs saved everyone from Trash Island.
As for Chief and Nutmeg's litter, there's mostly girls except for the two boys Basil and Prince.

hi jade, sending a request for prince steve if ur box is open rn, my apologies if not! i was wondering if we could get something about maybe the night before the wedding where they decide to make some private promises to each other that the whole kingdom won't be privy too? just some sweetness in general from those two would be nice. thx!! love u and ur writing and happy new years!
prince!steve soulmate au —you and steve have a last minute panic the night before your wedding, 1.3k. fem
Steve holds your hand all the way to the garden. It isn't proper to see him so late at night, especially the night before your wedding, but the guards lining the corridors say little as you pass. Selenite shines under your slippers, white shot through with an impossible light marbling.
Steve sees where you're looking and gives your fingers a tender stroke. “You okay?” he asks.
You nod and follow him down the steps to the garden. Steve has his own private section with a hammock on lifted stone and a terrace covered in honeysuckle. There's a picnic basket and a bottle of something beside it near two round cushions, but the small record player is what catches your attention.
“Oh, you're going to sing for me,” you joke.
“If you want me to. Are you warm enough?”
The weather is temperate. Not as hot as you'd hoped but it is getting late, the surrounding light of the kingdom and the crystal eucalyptus sconces glowing a minty blue that chases back the shadows but not the lack of sun.
“It's fine,” you say, giving his hand a careful squeeze back. He smiles to himself and helps you around the grass and onto your cushion.
He knows your nerves are shot. You're terrified for tomorrow, so scared of the crowds and the ceremony and the great heavy weight of your tiara. Your dress is less imposing, colourful, gaussian cuts of silk layered over you like something out of your storybooks. When you saw it you gasped, unable to coalesce the image you'd seen in the mirror with your usual reflection.
The wedding is suddenly here. You'll be a princess. You'll be his wife.
“Steve,” you say tightly, wrapping your arms around your knees.
“I know.” He opens the picnic basket and unearths a brown paper bag. “Here.”
You take his little bag knowing already that it'll be filled with pear candies. “We have to run away,” you say, poking nervously through the candy for a small one. You put it between your molars and talk through your teeth. “Tonight.”
“I have my bags packed.” He pulls out a sandwich made of finely cut tofu toasted in paprika and oil, then a second with softer bread. “That's lamb.”
You raise your brows at it. “Thank you, Steve, really, but I'm–”
“Not hungry. Me neither.” He closes the basket and pushes it all away, leaving nothing but air between you. “Do you really want to run away?”
“Do you really want to marry me?” you ask.
“Mm. More than anything,” he says, as though it isn't a big deal, as though he isn't himself. Steve acts like loving you is something he would've done regardless, and it always catches you off guard.
“But if we weren't–”
“But we are.”
“If we weren't–” you stress.
Steve crosses his legs on the pillow. He looks completely normal tonight, his hair unstyled and curling by his ears, his loose shirt and pants reminiscent of your own. The only thing that gives him away is the silver ring on his pinky finger that denotes the kingdom's main house. It's priceless. You could live a thousand luxurious lives off of the spoils you'd make from selling it.
He twists it around his fingers when he notices your gaze. “Okay,” he says, pulling it off.
“What?”
“If you want to run away, I won't stop you. I've told you before that I'd never make you do something you don't want to do, and I still mean it.” He smiles handsomely as he offers you the ring. “Take it, sweetheart. I don't want it.”
You take it uncertainly.
“But if you want to stay,” he adds, his naked hand on the floor between you, “then I promise to make you believe it.”
“Believe what?” you ask through a frown.
“That being soulmates doesn't matter. Of course it does, I couldn't be luckier in who the fates picked for me, or the stars, whatever you believe, sweetheart, I couldn't be luckier. And if we weren't soulmates, I– if we met somewhere different, I'd still want to marry you. You know that? I look at you, and you're it for me.”
You shake your head. “Would you come with me?”
“Yes.”
“Really?”
“Is that hard to believe?” He gets onto his knees adjacent and holds out his hand, relief like the sun shining in his warm voice as he murmurs, “I'm freaking you out.”
“You're not.”
“I'm being too forward.” His smile wavers. “The wedding isn't for us. I want to marry you, but we both– I know you're not ready. You're doing this for me, because I've asked you to, because they've asked us to, and you're not ready. We don't know each other.”
“We do,” you say.
“Okay, we do.” He rubs the back of your hand, once again so tender. “But not as much as most married people do.”
“Right,” you say quietly.
“And the wedding is a total sham anyways. You're going to look beautiful, and I'll be handsome like always,” —you laugh breathlessly, your panic melding to relief— “but it's definitely not for us. I get that. There's no pressure for anything to change between us, okay? I like things how they are.”
He shrugs and it's such a cute gesture, you forget for a moment what's worrying you. A split second, thinking, oh, he's lovely to look at. He acts like the Prince he is. He acts as though he's already fallen in love with you.
“I think I'm just panicking because we don't have any choice,” you say.
“We do, honey,” he reassures you. “Of course we do. If you really, really don't want to get married, we won't.”
It would cause a huge palaver, and it might break his heart a little. It might, when you think about it, break yours.
“But I'm marrying you,” you say.
He breathes out hard, taking your shoulder into his hand to pull you forward for a relieved, chaste kiss. It's so sweet and warm, you can't help pulling away too fast. His soul mark glows a rosy pink. “You're marrying me,” he says, meeting your eyes. “I'm a lucky guy, huh?”
He holds out his arms for a hug which you immediately give.
“I want to marry you,” you continue, delighted when he relaxes in your arms. “I do. It's not about you, I'm just terrified. I mean, it's not really us? I didn't even get to write my own vows.”
A small but heavily felt silence lapses. “You wanted to do that?” Steve asks.
You nod into his shoulder, refusing to lean away even as his hands retract. “Yeah,” you say, voice small.
“You really want to?”
“You've promised me a lot of things since I found you. I would've liked to return the favour,” you say, flustered.
“You found me,” he says. You don't need to see his face to hear his smile. "Here, give me that back. If you aren't running away, you may as well wear it." He slides it onto your marriage finger. The significance isn't lost.
He gets you both a pad of paper and a cup of scratchy pens, and you spend the evening writing vows you're too embarrassed to say aloud to one another in the garden. You swap papers, and spend the night pouring over his promises with an aching awe built in your chest. When the maids come calling that morning you're already awake, getting ready for the day ahead.
I'll make you laugh, and I'll keep you safe, and I'll never let the Palace idiots boss you around. I'll be the best kiss ever, and a better friend. I'll be careful with your heart if you're careful with mine. And I won't laugh if you slip in your new shoes. Much.

Thank you Dracula Daily (and thank you guy who put it in place) for:
Teaching people of the 21st century, on a large scale, that Mina and Lucy are strong female characters while being nurturing and in love with rather average men, and not needing to chop off heads right and left or sleep around to be ''strong''.
having people come together to explain to others things about paprika, sailing, christian theology, etc.
sparking a debate over how dirty the adaptations did to Lucy (and Jonathan, and Mina, etc).
instilling true sense of dread with the Demeter's journey day by day.
showing that a lawyer/clerk and a teacher can have an epic love story without needing a love triangle or cheating or a corrupt prince against them or anything. Distance and the dread of not receiving a letter is enough.
showing rejected men who stay friends with the endgame couple, and being healthy (rather... *eyes Dr Seward*) about it, and not becoming bad guys because she prefered someone else over them.
making memes about dracula a thing again.

The Fox and The Hounds pt. 4
Tumblr media
A/N: As I live and breath I have finally finished up chapter 4. Sorry that it took so long to get it done. I love these two awkward dog parents. Up next will be my newest Poly!Feysand fic and then the next portion of love and shadows. There is some mention of violence in this one. I will also accept people who want to beta read this for me to help me find silly mistakes that I know I miss. Also all of the photos in the moodboard came from pintertest
Summary: Its autumn court tradition to give your mate a fox kit before your ceremony. after years of knowing the Vanserra’s a mating bond snaps between the Autumn Heir and a well known smoke hound breeder
Warning: Mentions of violence and Beron being the father of the year
 WC: 2.6k
We had winnowed to a cabin deep in the forest of Autumn. I wasn’t sure what I was expecting, but the beautiful home in front of us was not it. When I had been told of this trip Eris had mentioned that it was his personal hunting cabin not elaborating further than that. Maybe I had been expecting the single room open floor concept cabins that my brothers had for hunting, but this fairy tale cottage nestled in the trees is anything but. The two story cabin is made of stone and dark wood and a porch wraps the whole way around the home. The barking of dogs draws my attention away from the home. All around the small clearing our hounds run freely with one another. I let out a small sigh of relief. We had shared concerns that the hounds wouldn’t get along with each other; however, it seems like they were unfounded. It is endearing to watch them run and play with one another; to watch Ramiel be reunited with one of her pups. Paprika wiggles in my arms to put her down. I gently put her on the forest floor still keeping a tight hold on her leash. I didn’t quite trust that she wouldn't just sprint off into the woods
“This is my private home.” Eris’ voice pulls my attention back to him. “ I spend my free time here when my presence is not required at the forest house.”
“It is beautiful, Eris.” and it's the truth, this is the kinda place that mothers tell their babes about when reading bedtime stories. A cottage like this is where a princess would live before being swept away by her prince charming. Eris holds out his arm for me to take. I gently thread my arm through his as he leads me up the walkway.
“So will this be our main residence after the wedding?” After our mating ceremony. It seemed like a safe question to ask, in all honesty I would rather be here than trapped in the massive forest house and bound to court decorum. The jewels and finery were lovely, but I would much rather be comfortable in working clothes surrounded by my hounds
“Yes, I try to keep out of the forest house as much as possible. I’m there when Father demands it but I want to keep my private life private.” His voice did not waiver. It was no secret that Beron was cruel; he kept a tight hold on the court and an even tighter one on his family. I had unfortunately witnessed this on several occasions when my family had  been summoned to the forest house. One memory had burned into my mind and it was hard to forget it. The high lord had pitted his second born against the youngest, and I think the only thing that stopped them from killing each other had been their mother desperately begging her husband to make them stop. We had only been children at the time. I remember watching in horror, clinging to my own mothers skirts. Eris had stood beside his fathers throne, the vision of the perfect heir. He had been the one to rip the second oldest off of the youngest, but only on his fathers command.
“I would never subject you to more of that place than absolutely necessary.” His voice pulls me out of my memories. The tension had become so thick between the two of us the silence deafening and uncomfortable.
“Are there kennels for the hounds?” I asked desperate to break this uncomfortable feeling.
“I am looking into having some constructed, but honestly I tend to just keep them in the house.” He seemed almost sheepish with his answer, red tinting his cheeks  “But with 20 it may not be the most manageable.”
“I only ask because I imagine that feeding time is going to be tricky. Not to mention night time routines” I respond unconsciously, taking a step closer to the fiery haired male. “ I honestly would rather keep them in the house, but…” I trailed off. Most families kept their hounds in kennels overnight. They let the beautiful creatures roam the house during the day but come nightfall they put them into kennels. I honestly felt safer having one or two of my hounds in the house with me at night but it wasn't normal.
“It is whatever you wish my mate. If you want kennels built I will have some built; if you are fine with the dogs having free range of the house that is what we will do. This is to be your home and I would have you comfortable. If there is something that needs to be changed, then I will seek to remedy whatever it is.” He seems so much softer now that it is just the two of us. I have seen him be so cruel in our lives, but here and now when it's just the two of us he's a different person.
“I would rather keep them in the house.” I pause “I feel safer when they are close, and if you get called away I would rather them be here with me.” to keep me safe they were the unspoken words. My hounds could be vicious when threatened, but Eris’ were on a whole different level. I had been grateful when he introduced me to his hounds that they had taken to me. It had been tense at first but by the time I was to leave the forest house I always had one or two of them trailing after me. The thought of having all of them when inevitably I am alone here put my mind at ease.
“Then in the house they will stay.” I swear that I could see just a hint of a smile forming on his lips as we entered the home. The inside was surprisingly homey, it was a stark contrast to the cold formality of the Forest house. The main living room had two large comfortable looking sofas facing each other; a large overstuffed armchair in a worn brown leather sat facing the  massive stone fireplace. Massive windows lined one wall giving a breathtaking view of the forest behind it, another wall hosted massive bookshelves filled with books.  The coffee table between the two couches was a rustic affair carved of an old massive oak. Dog beds were scattered around the room along with various toys. For this being Eris’ private retreat it looks very well lived in. The whole space was very masculine, but I had a feeling that I could bring my own touch to the place and it would be perfect. I take a seat on one of the couches gathering paprika in lap unclipping her leash as she settles in for cuddles.
“After the ceremony I figured that you could go through and make any changes to the place that you wish. Or we could travel to town tomorrow?” as he takes a seat on the sofa across from me.
“I wouldn’t mind going to town. It is very homey here, but we might need to make some adjustments to make it our place.” compromise is what makes a marriage work. We have to work together and make decisions as a team.
It settled into an awkward silence between the two of us. Neither one of us really knew what to say. It really hit home that this was our first time alone with no chaperones. No  strict parents, no nosy brothers, no courtiers in our business. I feel like I couldn’t move under his gaze; I knew Eris’ reputation. He had been nothing but polite and respectful while we were in public and surrounded by people. That could all change now that we are in private.  A loud crack of thunder broke the silence and I jumped in my seat.
“We should probably bring in the hounds.” I break the silence and an uneasy laugh escapes me as I turn my eyes to the windows storm clouds rolling in.
Eris stands up from his chair moving to the double doors, he opens both doors and lets out a long whistle. Within seconds all of the hounds come running into the house; suddenly the house becomes alive with noise with the jingle of tags and the clicks of nails on the hardwood and barking. It is a laughable situation as all 18 trip over one another as they run into the living room.  I feel the cushion next to me dip as one of the 18 dogs hops up next to me; I grimace as I feel a wet tongue lick at my face, I run a hand down the hounds back relishing in the warmth radiating off of its silky fur.
“The pride of the Autumn court, vicious killers, the lot of you,  tracking down your enemies  with lethal accuracy and ripping them to shreds. And yet you act like puppies.” I laugh as the dog attempts to sit in my lap on top of poor Paprika. The fox kit scurries out of my lap with an indignant yip as the fully grown smoke hound attempts to fit on my lap.
“Ichabod! Down.” Eris snaps at the dog who had crawled into my lap. Ichabod on the other hand showed absolutely no signs of moving. I laugh and wrap my arms around the hound.
“He’s fine Eris.” I rest my chin on Ichabod, giving him scratches “He’s just a big baby”
“Yes, a big baby whom I have seen rip a male  to shreds.” Eris sigs before taking a seat on the opposing couch again shooing away one of the hounds that decided he needed the whole couch. Paprika perks up at the sight of Eris sitting down darting over to take up a seat in his lap since hers was so rudely stolen. He laughs long fingers gently scratching at her soft ears.
“I’m just glad that your dogs get along with mine and they seem to like me. I would hate to imagine what would have happened if we couldn’t integrate them.” to say that the smoke hounds were territorial was putting it mildly. It wasn’t uncommon for smoke hounds to attack unfamiliar hounds, I had heard horror stories around the court of what could happen when trying to integrate two kennels. It was why Eris and I had taken major precautions after the bond had snapped. We would introduce one or two dogs at a time supervised and on leads at all times. We had finally got to the point last week where we  let all of them out together at the forest house.
“I would rather not think about that. While I have no doubt in your skills as a breeder, that you could breed a wonderful replacement. I would hate to lose any of our hounds. Yours for their sheer pedigree alone and mine…” he pauses for a second “I raised all of mine, trained them. They work so well together. I can’t fathom what I would do If I lost one”
Eris loved his hounds just like I love mine. We had bonded over it years ago but to hear him say it was enlightening. It was deeper than I knew before and it warmed me to my core the amount of love this male has for his hounds. I smile at the scene in front of me as Eris is surrounded by three hounds begging for attention as Paprika gets in his face demanding that he pay attention to her. I let out a laugh which caused him to look up at me. Cinnamon eyes met mine. I feel a slight tug on the bond from his end, my eyes widen as a smile grows on his face. The two of us had not really explored the bond since it snapped, there were a few times that I could feel some intense emotion from his end while we were separated and a few times where he had used it to check in on me when we were forced to attend public events. But a solid pull like this neither of us had been brave enough to try.
“I guess I should give you a tour of the house, not just sit around playing with the hounds.” Eris moved to stand up gently placing Paprika on the floor.
“A tour would be nice” I nudged Ichabod off my lap. He jumps down to the floor quickly running off to play with another one of the hounds. Eris had moved to stand in front of me offering his hand. I take it and stand. I had never noticed before how warm his hands are; it was almost as if fire  he wielded was coursing through his veins. He moved my hand to rest in the crook of his arm as he led me through the house.
I found myself enjoying this time with him, watching him show off his home…or rather our home. For the most part the cottage was not decorated, a clear sign that a single male had resided here.  One room stuck out to me on the tour; Eris kept an office here. Papers were scattered all over the large oak desk that dominated the room.
“I apologize for the mess in here.” He seemed almost sheepish. “ I wanted to make sure that I had all of my work done before I came to get you so that I could focus on getting to know you and not  work.”
It warmed me to hear that he had wanted to make sure that he was able to spend this weekend getting to know me rather than finishing up work. I knew first hand what it was like, my father depending on the workload from the forest house would sometimes end up sequestered in his office for days on end.
“Thank you, I know this whole engagement has been rather hectic. So for you to make the time to get to know me means a lot.” I gently squeezed his arm.
“We need all the time we can get because in two weeks we will be bound together.” he solemnly responds “I’d rather know you and at the bare minimum be your friend. We can learn to love each other later.”
He leads me away from the office showing the many guest rooms. They are spartanly decorated with just a bed and nightstand. “You can change these rooms however you please. I had no true need for them and didn’t feel that it was necessary to decorate.
I couldn’t help but let out a laugh at that. It had been such a male answer, something that I had heard before when Mother and I had visited the Illyrian camps years ago. Seems like males will have similar responses to decorating no matter what court. He stops in front of two closed doors.
“This will be your room during your stay here.” He opens the door to reveal a cozy looking room. The room is dominated by a large bed centered on the right wall, covered in a deep maroon duvet and cream colored accent pillows. The chest of drawers and night stands were carved out of a rich walnut. Dog beds were scattered across the floor. Some one had put the time in to decorating this room “My mother decorated it for you. If you don't like it we can change it.”
“No, no. It is perfect Eris.” I am quick to cut him off “I love it”
“Mother will be glad to hear that. My room is across the hall.” he points to the closed door. He runs a hand through his hair. “I will leave you to get settled. The servants should have dinner ready in a few hours so I will let you rest.”
I nod and take a step into my room “Thank you Eris.” what I am thanking him for I don’t know  after I close the door I lean against it letting my head fall back. This is going to be an awkward weekend.

A long life
Another Dream and Hob!reader, because I’m not done with them yet.
Tumblr media
With her long life, Y/N had been through a lot. Good things, beautiful encounters, but also a lot of problems that she tried to forget, even if she kept bad memories that allowed her to make the right decisions, as well as a few nightmares that sometimes came to haunt her.
This had happened less often since she had been dating Dream.
It had taken him a while for him to tell her about what had happened to him, the reason he had missed one of their precious dates. Being locked up was one of the things Y/N didn't want to remember, but being locked up for a hundred years wasn't one of the things she had experienced.
"Fortunately, my love. I wouldn't have allowed it anyway, I would have come looking for you."
"If I had known why you weren't here..."
"Hush." said Morpheus, putting a finger on her lips. "You couldn't have known, and you couldn't have done anything except put yourself in unnecessary danger, which I never wanted. Others could have helped me and they didn't. You are not responsible."
Y/N showered Dream with kisses and caresses after this revelation, considering that physical contact must have been missing all this time. He let her, purring under her hands.
Later, Lucienne told her that the Lord always lacked physical contact, long before his misadventure. She was happy that he had found someone who loved him, and with whom he felt confident enough to allow her to touch him like this.
If he sometimes behaved like a cat in need of affection, Dream however had difficulty communicating his feelings with words. Which was ironic for the Prince of stories.
Oh, he sometimes recited poems and songs for Y/N, but he said little about himself and his torments. As if he was afraid of disturbing her, of disgusting her, or because he considered that she couldn't understand.
He also had some strange habits. For example, even though he gave her a few nicknames, he often used her full name when he wanted her attention.
"Y/N Y/L/N, you are an incorrigible creature."
     "I'm in trouble ?"
"No, I just find you amazing. Why ?"
"People only use full names to indicate that the person has done something stupid."
"One of my nightmares often said that, it's nonsense."
"Dream of the Endless, it's you who's absurd. See ?"
"What should I see ? I like to hear my name in your mouth."
He wasn't dancing. Never. Morpheus didn't give her any explanation about it, except that dancing was part of his youngest sister's domain. None of the dreams understood why, since they liked to dance and it was not forbidden.
Maybe their creator wasn't good at dancing and refused to look ridiculous.
Sometimes he didn't understand certain images, quotes or metaphors. This amused Y/N a lot, who found him adorable with his little pout of indignation.
"I'm not saying I'm not happy to be with you in the Dreaming. I'm saying I'd like us to spend some time together, in the Waking world. I know you don't like being away from your domain, but Lucienne will be there to make sure you're okay, Matthew will come to you if there's a problem, and I won't let anyone hurt you."
"I am perfectly capable of defending myself."
"I know, babe. I know you, I walked with you once upon a dream."
"... We walked together more than once in a dream. You just blamed me for that."
"You really need to come to my place to see the stories and songs you missed during your capture. Oh, especially the ones about dreams ! I don't know if you'll like 'Paprika'. And before you ask, 'Requiem for a dream' has nothing to do with the subject."
"No ! Please." Matthew begged her. "He looks lost when I sing 'Mister Sandman' and 'Just like a prayer', I don't want to lose that !"
"I am indeed a dream, Matthew, and therefore I am indeed not what I seem to be."
     "Of course, boss, of course."
In secret, Morpheus had already inquired about most of the things he had missed for a hundred years, probably to not look stupid. Maybe Mervyn's dance theory wasn't entirely unfounded.
He also still seemed a little scared about leaving the Dreaming. Although he refused to admit it, he had been traumatized by what had happened to him, and he lived with the fear that it would happen again, that he would be locked in a cellar again and his world would be reduced to ashes.
But it wasn't just that.
Dream was really not good at communicating, especially with people he didn't know. He wasn't used to people.
His older sister had tried to help him with this problem, introducing him to Y/N, then Hob, but it hadn't been enough.
Outside of his family and his creations, Dream never spoke to anyone. The few times this had happened, the story had ended badly.
The master of dreams and nightmares had therefore deduced that apart from his own and the beings he had created, no one could really appreciate his company. And again, his family and dreams didn't really have a choice.
Y/N had therefore been a surprise, a pleasant surprise, but he still thought that she could leave, and that no one else would replace her. He didn't want anyone else anyway.
It was for her, and for her only, with this fear that she would leave him if he didn't try hard, that he agreed to visit her more often in the waking world, and not just once every hundred years.
"... You do realize that if I wasn't immortal, I would have died of a heart attack a long time ago ?"
"I don't understand what you mean. Aren't you happy to see me, my love ?"
"Dream, you're cute and of course I'm happy to see you, but you just appeared in my bathroom without warning, it's a bit surprising. Announce yourself. Use the door. Put a bell on."
"Matthew and Mervyn told me that surprises are a good thing in a relationship."
"I think they were talking about flowers, or gifts, or taking me somewhere romantic."
"No, they talked about surprising you at home, to tell you that I missed you."
"... Once again you're adorable, but remind me to kill them the next time I see them."
"I can't let you do this, even though I will punish them."
"It's an expression, love. So, you want to see a series with me?  It's too cold outside, I want to stay on the sofa, drinking chocolate, wrapped in a blanket, in front of Inception. You're going to hate Inception."
"So you wish to torture me ?"
"No, I wish I was in your arms while you review the movie, because you will certainly make fun commentaries, and I want to be in your arms."
     "Sounds perfect to me."
With her long life, Y/N had experienced a lot of good things, but nothing had ever been so wonderful as since Morpheus was fully part of it.

Follow up to cringe culture essay: animated film edition
Tumblr media
My post about cringe culture, fandoms, and kids media, which you can read here, briefly mentioned how outsiders mock animation fans for using animated kids shows to say that animation is for everyone. I want to follow up on that point.
I had the displeasure of seeing an awful post on my Twitter timeline that went “the ‘animation IS cinema’ people always pick the dweebiest movies to make their argument. Just post Beavis and Butt-Head Do America guys, nobody would disagree” Wow okay mr edgelord. You sound like a stereotypical Disney Channel bully.
The ‘animation is cinema’ image comes from The Mitchells vs the Machines, which is a family-friendly movie that many hold up as a good example of an animated movie, and how animation is for everyone. This gets mocked by outsiders (usually snooty Letterboxd types) who think that this movie uses the “Grubhub art style” or some BS like that. As you can see, people who act like that think animation is only for children, and plug their ears and go LALALA when you bring up good animated kids’ films with mass appeal. Whether you like it or not, animation always has and always will be cinema.
This brings us to another problem: a lack of mainstream adult animated films. Thanks to the stigma that animation is only for children, we never get mass-marketed animated movies for adults these days, and any movies that ARE for adults are only shown at art house theaters. Sausage Party was a mass-marketed adult movie, but it alienated its audience with its crass humor and kiddie appearance (Silly Rabbit, CGI animation is for kids! /s)
I feel like if adult animated films were marketed more, they would reach a wider audience. As much as I love Mitchells and most of Pixar’s output, animation fans should definitely check out movies specifically aimed at adults. Expand your palate a bit. It’s okay to watch kids stuff, and it’s okay if you only like kids stuff, but adult animation needs to be appreciated more, since it suffers a stigma that it’s all low-brow, poorly animated, offensive comedy.
ADULT ANIMATED FILMS TO CHECK OUT:
Beavis and Butthead Do America (as well as Beavis and Butthead Do the Universe) - These are more teen movies then adult movies, and they are low brow, but they do it (badumtsh) in the best possible way
Heavy Metal (1981)
Watership Down*
Fantastic Planet
Akira
Ghost in the Shell
Perfect Blue
Paprika
The End of Evangelion
Urusei Yatsura 2: Beautiful Dreamer
Princess Mononoke*
Princess (2006 danish movie)
The Plague Dogs
Entergalactic
The works of Ralph Bakshi
I Lost My Body
The Spine of Night
Pink Floyd - The Wall
The Prince of Egypt*
*these are technically aimed at kids, but I mean it when I say that they deserve higher ratings and feel more adult than family-friendly
Feel free to add more suggestions
EDIT: Bringing this back because Twitter is hating on animation once again, and acting like snobs by saying that Puss in Boots is bad. ANIMATION AIMED AT CHILDREN IS STILL CINEMA. CHILDRENS ≠ BAD. I hate Letterboxd bros

Tag Nine People You'd Like To Get To Know Better
FAVOURITE COLOUR(s): Dark, rich purples and reds. Greens: British racing, chartreuse. Bottle greens and browns. Black and white contrasts. Glasz eyes are the most beautiful on Earth. Love a check or tartan pattern. I paint all my miniatures in cold blue/bronze or warm purple/brass contrast unless physically prevented from doing so.
FAVOURITE FLAVOUR(s): Rock salt and woodsmoke and paprika in a thin batter. Rich thick curry sauce - warm and textured, not hot-like-burning. Whole milk and sour cream. Fresh carrots and tomatoes - just chomp those fuckers down. Sourdough and soft cheese. Tea with an undertone of citrus or an abundance of honey. Mulled apples. Dirty chai. And above all, peppermint.
FAVOURITE MUSIC: Tradgoth and post punk (basslines you can slink to), trip hop (take me somewhere far away), post rock soundscapes (the more elegiac the better), prog (but more the Pink Floyd pomp rock than wildly experimental stuff), anything Jim Jarmusch or Polly Jean Harvey ever touch, sad country and sleazy swamp rocks. Music for people who want to crawl into a swamp, cop off, and drown each other.
FAVOURITE MOVIE(s): Franklyn. Withnail & I. Only Lovers Left Alive. I detest busy plotting and spectacle and run on vibes. But also, because sometimes I'm From The Nineties And Also British, Guy Ritchie's entire oeuvre. Sin City has a nice vibe even though it's a nasty piece of work. Possession (1981) and Nosferatu (1979) - I'll watch Isabelle Adjani in anything. Or Eva Green. Give me pale, deathless, insane women.
FAVOURITE BOOK(s): UGH! Anything by Terry Pratchett. S T Gibson's vampire stories. Anything by Susanna Clarke. Earthsea. The first four books of Anno Dracula. Anything by Laura Shepherd-Robinson. Alis Hawkins' Oxford novels. Seth Dickenson's Masquerade and Tamsyn Muir's Locked Tomb. The Wolf Hall trilogy. Sherlock Holmes and weird post-Holmes stuff from Obverse. T. S. Eliot, William Blake, Edgar Allen Poe, Sylvia Plath, and a raft of contemporary Welsh poets - Cath Drake, Katherine Stansfield, Christopher Meredith. If I had a guilty pleasure, Black Library novels (John French, Matt Farrer and Aaron Dembksi-Bowden) would be it.
FAVOURITE SERIES(es): Doctor Who, Lock, Stock..., The Biederbeck Trilogy, What We Do In The Shadows, LA By Night, The Thick of It and... Taskmaster. Taskmaster is my religion. I like seeing the Bit all comics do get tested to destruction. And podcasts: Poorhammer, the 40K Badcast. I get my hobby chat fix from those.
LAST SONG: :Of The Wand And The Moon:, 'Hold My Hand'
LAST SERIES: The Thick of It (rewatch).
LAST MOVIE: Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (comfort rewatch, I've been poorly)
CURRENTLY READING: Viriconium by M. John Harrison.
CURRENTLY WATCHING: nothing
CURRENTLY WORKING ON: ideating a festive V5 one-off and new chronicles for next year, but otherwise taking it easy (I've been really poorly)
