Eddie is on tour pt 2

“I haven’t even thought about him once this week,” Eddie lies as he stacks their home designed shirts on the table.

Jeff rolls his eyes. “I know you, Munson. Let’s recap. You’ve talked to this guy once, haven’t even text him because you’re in your head, and you’ve been agonizing over calling him again since the second you hung up the phone nights ago.”

Eddie lets out a low snarl.

“That means I’m right.” A smug grin peeks at the corner of Jeff’s lips. “You’ve not stopped thinking about him.”

Whatever. Maybe Jeff was right. Eddie didn’t know the rules with something like this. Should he text? Should he call? If he calls, what time would be okay to call? It’s not like he could guess when he’d be free. Plus, time lost all meaning on tour. It had been 5 days and almost 500 miles on the road between shows.

Tonight Eddie was on merch duty. He is the most engaging one out of the guys. They usually put him there because he brought in the most profit. It was easy for him to talk. He chats with a girl who was terribly interested in how the band started.

“We did a talent show together in middle school. We didn’t win but we did a blood bond ritual that night so we are stuck together forever.” He shoots her a devilish grin and she gives a nervous chuckle. “Only kidding. These guys—“ his phone lights up. It’s Steve.

“Excuse me,” he nods at his phone as he picks it up. He takes a deep breath before he answers. “Hello?”

“Hey Eddie!” Steve sounds excited he picked up. “I am so sorry I didn’t call sooner. “

Eddie smiles “it’s okay.”

“I swear I wanted to call—“

“Steve, it’s okay!” Eddie takes the cash from the girl as she walks off with a copy of their EP.

“Okay.” He gives a soft chuckle.

“Hope it wasn’t a beautiful girl who kept you away.” Eddie teases, causing his heart to drop into his stomach. Sure it had been on his mind since they first talked but—

“Nah, man. I was at camp this week with the kids and we had negative amounts of service. I wanted to call. I did!”

“Steve.”

“And Robin kept giving me shit about it and—“

“Steve.”

“Maybe she was right—“

“Sweetheart.”

Steve goes quiet. “Yeah?”

“I’m glad you called.”

“Cool. Alright. Yeah.”

Steve sighs.

“Couple questions though.” Eddie grins.

“Shoot.”

“You have kids?” His voice catches in his throat.

“Ah. No. It’s kind of complicated.” Steve sounds more relaxed so Eddie urges him on.

“Do tell.”

“I used to babysit them. I know, weird. They are all wonderful little brats, as much as I’d like to strangle them. They’re growing up too fast and this is our last summer together before they head off to college.”

“That’s… not what I expected.” Eddie says more to himself than anyone else. He’s startled as the next band starts up, loudly presenting their set.

“Shit. You’re still at the show!” Steve hollers through the phone.

“Time zones, man. I can call you back—“ Eddie is cut off as Jeff joins him at the table. He makes a lewd gesture at Eddie, knowing full well he’s on a call with Steve.

Eddie waves him off as Steve’s call drops. He sighs, a bit defeated. Jeff pokes at his shoulder making kissy noises. He ignores him and pushes him away as his phone vibrates in his hand.

Steve: call me tonight if you want. I’ll be up late. :)

Jeff peers over Eddie’s shoulder and reads the text. “Eddie and Steve, sitting in a treeee.”

Eddie elbows him in the stomach.

“Shut it, man. I don’t even know if he’s into guys! He mentioned a girl named Robin. Could be his girlfriend.”

“I’m not convinced.” Jeff shrugs. “He called you tonight. That text has a smiley face on it. He doesn’t have a girlfriend. And if he does, and he’s doing that,” he points to Eddie’s phone. “Then you don’t want any part of it.”

Eddie has to agree with him there. Before his thoughts run away from him he spots another patron eyeing their table and waves to her.

Jeff leans in, “guess that’s for future Eddie to worry about, huh?”

Eddie rolls his eyes and readies for his performance.

“Fair maiden. Can I interest you in our wares?” Eddie sweeps his hands in front of him to present their small selection of merch. She steps forward and smiles as she points to a hand designed shirt.

He makes mental notes of the things he wanted to ask Steve. Need to figure out who this guy was and how did he have such a hold over him already? All Eddie knew was that he was completely taken with him.

I have been perusing the brocedes tag on ao3 (not an easy confession to make) and I've noticed that a lot of the fics make Nico out to be... desperate... trying to get Lewis to look at him etc etc. And Idk if it's just me but, and this is nothing against Lewis, I get the feeling like Nico was the one who dealt w/ the friendship breakdown better? I'm not saying Lewis is doing badly (he's got 7 WDC!) but. Nico is able to talk about him, yknow? Meanwhile as you said Lewis makes a point not to mention Nico's name (unless that has been played up by fandom as well, which is possible. I haven't watched Every Lewis Interview That Mentions Nico).

you are correct in your observation that people do write nico like that, and if you're on my blog long enough you'll see me ranting about his mischaracterization in fanon. I'm going to ramble a bit; bear with me

there's actually a very simple reason for this: Lewis has a bigger fanbase. F1 has exploded much bigger than 2016. There's entire swaths of fans who have never seen Nico race live (me included), whose idea of brocedes comes from present day lewis who does not speak of nico, and nico rosberg f1 commentator who anytime he mentions lewis goes semi-viral cause he's clearly obsessed with him (it's a circle).

i actually got into f1 pretty recently so my first take on brocedes was that this Nico dude did a lot of shady shit and broke their friendship to win in 2016 and then retired. (Lewis' part and share of war crimes in that breakup is minimised as narratives are written by winners and Lewis is definitely the winner in the long run) so obviously the fics written now will reflect that, with Nico profusely begging for forgiveness/apologising and Lewis as someone hurt and in the position to forgive/accept reconciliation. (🙄)

if you're not 500 hours deep into Nico lore (and why should you be) you will accept fanon as your perception of him, which is how you'll write him, and the cycle continues... now obvious disclaimer: people can write and enjoy whatever they want, it's all made up anyway. I'm simply explaining why one particular narrative is more persistent. I'm not even going to say my perception is correct, bc I'm not immune to bias either but I have certain things I find more interesting than other things. the real reason brocedes is so compelling is bc everyone's had one explosive friendship breakup that's left them reeling and they're the perfect representation of it

my self appointed job is to comb through every Lewis interview that mentions nico haha because it's so notable the rare times he does! He has improved slightly on that regard, here's him mentioning how Nico's place was the first place he'd ever stayed in monaco, and here's him talking about Nico to Martin Brundle while looking back at some of his races.

so he Can say the nico word lol but he generally avoids it. there's also the parallel that Nico was willing to be friends after 2016 while Lewis was the one who was flipping through pages that contained his picture not wanting to look at it. but he has improved since, prob the wound was still fresh and I enjoy Lewis being sensitive and petty.

It's just Lewis wouldn't say his name for things like the DTS netflix ep where he talks about how sometimes the guy you're teammates with is your best friend, and how it creates a lot of friction. LIKE WE KNOW WHO YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT MAN.

or how he had to deliberately decline sky sports interviews with Nico cause back when Nico was on paddock (🕊😔) he interviewed all the drivers except for Lewis and you KNOW sky sports would be all over that shit.

and yet, they Could stand to talk when there's no cameras filming. so... yeah. i hate those bitches and I know too much about them. whoever won the breakup, we all lost 😔

Chicago Justice Season 1 Ep. 4 "Judge Not"

Valdez finds herself in trouble after witnessing the murder of a well-known judge while having drinks with him at a bar. Stone investigates Valdez's connection to the victim and, when she fails to provide a clear answer, he bars her from working on the case. During the trial, the team discovers that the killer is the ex-husband of a rape victim whose attacker received a light sentence from the judge.

After finishing a case, Anna Valdez was summoned to approach the bench by the judge, who informed her of an 8 pm meeting.

Later that night, as they leave the restaurant, they discuss how he will end his marriage with his wife. As Anna reaches her car, shots ring out. She hides behind her car and watches as someone on a motorcycle rides off. She realizes it was Ray (the judge) and calls for help.

Peter Stone sat beside her and asked her to recount what had happened. Anna says she didn't see anything but heard four gunshots. He tells her to sit tight as he goes to speak with Antonio and Laura. Laura suggests that it sounds like a hit, but Stone says he has been a judge for 15 years and has put away at leas 500 bad guys and to check if any have been paroled recently. He asks them to canvas the area, hoping someone saw something. Stone returns to Anna to take her home and informs her that the judge didn't make it.

Anna recounts what happened at Sheridan's to Stone at the ASA office. Stone questions her about leaving the bar with Ray after she claimed to be there alone. Anna explains that she left the bar alone, got to her car, and heard four gunshots. When Stone tells her to take a few days off, Anna is furious and begs him not to exclude her from the investigation. Stone gives her the option of taking a few days off or working on the many cases sitting on her desk.

Stone meets Mark Jefferies and tells him that the mayor believes this shakes the foundation. Jefferies, who has known Ray since he was a rookie on the force, questions Anna's version of events. Stone receives a call informing him that CPD has arrested a man who used the same gun that killed Ray to rob a liquor store. The ballistics match, but the suspect was captured on video at a soup kitchen during the time of the shooting.

Antonio and Laura question Ray's wife. She quickly changes her story when they ask why her husband would be at the bar that night. They learn that she has a foster daughter. When Laura asks to speak to her, she says she is out.

However, Antonio confirms that the Mercedes is in the garage, and she may have come home without her even knowing. She admits that her daughter runs away but always comes back in a day or two. However, she hasn't seen her recently. Caitlyn has been fighting with Ray recently, but she doesn't know why. When they search her room, they find no cell phone or laptop, but they do find a lot of metal music. Laura finds a book with drawings, and in Latin, it is written "Eye for an Eye!"

Stone visits the Sheridan, where the bartender says she thinks she has seen Anna but can't be sure. However, once she sees Ray's photo, she recognizes them as a couple who have been there a few times. Stone asks what she knows about them. She confirmed that Anna arrived alone. About 10 minutes later, he arrived and ate the calamari that she had ordered. She asked him if he had told her yet.

Antonio and Laura found Caitlyn at the cafe where she hangs out. After a brief chase, Laura managed to handcuff her, but not before Caitlyn bit her. Antonio noticed a gang tattoo on Caitlyn's arm and suggested that Laura should have bitten her back.

Caitlyn was very rude to Laura and claimed to know her rights, but when she became belligerent, Antonio told her that it was no wonder she was never adopted. This made her chin quiver, and Laura sat down. Caitlyn tells that Ray never hurt her and that she was only there to ease Ray's rich suburban lifestyle. Caitlyn also reveals that Ray was a douche. Anna bursts into the room and asks to speak alone with Caitlyn after Laura warns her to watch out because she bites.

Anna informs Caitlyn that she is aware of her mother's actions, including the vandalism of Ray's car. Although Anna does not believe Caitlyn is responsible for Ray's death, the situation does not look good for her. Caitlyn discovers that Anna is actually Anna Valdez, and that Ray had told her she could be like her. Anna inquires about Orlando's death, and Caitlyn realizes that Anna was having an affair with Ray. As Stone enters the room and demands to speak with Anna, the conversation is interrupted. Anna leaves. Caitlyn begins slamming walls and doors. Stone tells Anna to go home. Anna says they are wasting their time on Caitlyn.

He orders Laura and Antonio to look through Caitlyn's files. If Anna was having an affair with Ray, everything they learn through her is tainted. This files contain a letter stating that Ray would make a terrible father due to his hatred towards women and his protection of rapists. The letter suggests that he should be removed from the bench and even from the planet. The author of the letter threatens to take action if nothing is done. Laura discovers that Ray has presided over 47 rape case, and Antonio hopes that they can use the letter to narrow down which cases he was involved in.

Stone and Anna go out to dinner. Anna tells Stone to ask her out or she is leaving. Stone asks if they were sleeping together, and Anna says it's none of his business and is appalled that he would think she would do anything unethical. Stone asks about what the bartender told him. Anna tells him he is probably the smartest person she knows, but he is way off base with this one.

Antonio and Laura discovered that the paper the letter was written on was sold exclusively at a single store in Chicago, which is affiliated with the university. Additionally, they found that only three cases involved CCU. The first case resulted in a 20-year prison sentence, the second was dismissed after the victim recanted, and the third occurred seven years ago, resulting in the perpetrator receiving only five months in prison.

Zoe Butler was found at a meeting for rape survivors. At first, she did not seem to be the suspect. However, Laura received a message stating that the prints from Zoe's rape file matched the ones found on the bullet. Despite having an alibi with 30 witnesses that proves her whereabouts at the time of murder, Zoe expresses her frustration with the ongoing impact of her rape and tells them to "screw themselves". She has spent the past 7 years trying to move on.

Laura informs Anna at the bar that Zoe has been arrested. Anna recognizes the name and reveals that the case was a burden for Ray. He was unable to shake it off, and there were malicious articles written about him. Anna shows Laura the articles, and they discover that the handwriting on a sign at a rally matches.

Antonio and Laura discover that the woman holding the sign is Wendy, an advocate for rape victims. Wendy reveals that she has extensive knowledge of child and family services. She also expresses her belief that the judicial system is rigged. The group learns that Wendy has just returned from a week-long conference and just got home this morning. She blames Judge Kenzie for the situation and believes that he will face consequences. Wendy learns that Ray Kenzie was killed. She then informs them that she did not believe Jon Hoffmann intended it.

Jon is approached about his ex, Zoe. He denies that she could have committed the crime, as she disliked guns. Although he had bought her one and they had gone to a shooting range once, she had refused to go again. Jon reports that the gun is missing due to a previous break-in. Antonio admires Jon's goggles and asks to see his bike. Jon claims that the bike belongs to his brother but he needs to return to his job as a security guard. Laura inforhim him that it was not a request. They proceed to the garage where they see the motorcycle. Antonio inspects it and finds the orange sticker that Anna had mentioned on the shield. Jon is then placed und arrest.

Stone meets with Dr. Daniel Charles, a psychiatrist at Chicago Med, to inquire about the motive behind a man killing a judge who had ruled on a case seven years prior. Charles suggests that it could be a matter of revenge. Jon may have heard about the rape and felt helpless. One of his reactions could have been vengeance. He couldn't get to the rapist, so he went after the judge who set him free. When Stone asks why now, Charles says anything could have set him off, even seeing a pair of her socks.

Zoe says in court she divorced Jon because he only saw her as a victim and never as a survivor. She admits that she didn't tell anyone about her marraige because talking about Jon was painful. He made her feel like she had to relive the rape every day.

Anna is on the stand answering Stone's questions. The defense then asks her about the evening she spent with Ray. Anna admits it wasn't the first time and the attorney requests to approach the judge. The defense requests to remove her testimony due to the romantic relationship between the witness and the victim. Both parties are aware of the question posed to the Judge regarding whether or not he has informed her. The Judge has allowed her testimony to remain and the jury will make the final decision.

Later that night, Anna is in her office writing. She is visibly upset when she receives a call from Zoe, who has come to see her. Zoe admits that she did not hate Judge Kenzie and that the short sentencing was her own fault. She felt sorry for Stan, the rapist, because she did not want to ruin his whole life for one stupid mistake. Kenzie only did what she asked. Anna reassures Zoe that she is not to blame and that she just wants the situation to be over. She does not want her fiancé Blake to be drawn into this mess either.

Anna visits stone in his office off the record. Anna reflects on the importance of looking forward to the future, citing Zoe's upcoming wedding. Stone offers his condolences. Stone promptly opens his computer, stating that Dr. Charles' information has prompted him to do so.

Jon stood up and shouted in the middle of the courtroom upon seeing Zoe with her fiancé Blake. He expressed his frustration that everyone had moved on except for him, and that was the reason he killed the judge. Jon was sentenced to 30 years for the murder of the judge.

Anna asked him if he would have believed her if she had told him that she was sleeping with Ray. If their relationship was relevant to the case, she would have told him. However, she chose to exercise her right to privacy since it had nothing to do with the end result.

it takes two bodies, a generous amount of liquor, and a few smooth words to make a child - and it takes fearful teenagers, judgmental parents of said teenagers, and desperation to make a home. it’s her father who wants her, but her mother who raises her. some days it felt like she was living in two homes instead of one (though both were barely keeping it together, cracks in the walls and holes covered up by whatever pretty thing laid around). when swimming in the ocean during a storm, both the sea and the wind play a part in the fight to shore. but there were times the sun peaked through, moments of rest where it was possible to catch a breath or two before it started anew.  

her mother nagged, screamed, and couldn’t be bothered to raise a child but there were moments it was just the two of them at the dinner table eating in silence but peering at each other between glances. her father coddled, taught her music, how to dance, how to (sort of) sing, and took her overseas to the states every summer but six of the twelve months in the year she was lucky to see him in passing.

for a little, it was okay. lee miyoung spent more time out with friends and pretending to live as a non-parental college student than being a mother, but it meant that song hayi grew up independent. she knew to cook, she knew to get herself to school and back, she knew that a bedtime wasn’t necessary and she could stay up watching all types of dance videos and listening to all kinds of music. jay song spent more time focused on dance and chasing a dream than being a father, but it meant song hayi grew up resilient. she knew how to dance before she could walk, she knew how to go after what she wanted, and she didn’t give up on anything (not even trying to beat stinky, ugly, annoying kim seunghyun in gym everyday).

perhaps that little home had never been home, but jeju had been. her mother could rave about busan all she wanted (and really, what did she expect hayi to believe when her mother was native to the city and still found a way to leave it miles behind) but at ten years old, she knew better. the move is the hardest part about the divorce, not the fact that her mother and father were no longer together (because, truly, they never had been) nor the fact that her mother had won custody over her (seriously, she hadn’t expected a man who isn’t even in the country for more than half the year to be given full parental rights) but the fact that she was starting from scratch. in a way, that’s exactly what had happened.

it’s as if her mother became a new person overnight, suddenly concern over what her daughter ate in the morning (and for lunch, and dinner!) and caring about what outfit her daughter was leaving the house in (the shopping trips had not been fun, no matter how much she loved fashion). from couldn’t be bothered to overbearing, it was suffocating. her father moved to seoul, not wanting to be anywhere near busan but close enough to visit (”it’s only four hours!”) but besides two more summers together in california and a few trips to seoul on the weekends, it was a miracle if her mother let her out of her sight.

her mother hates that she dances, but she can’t stop her. hayi doesn’t know if it’s because she thinks it’s below her or because it reminds her of her ex husband or because there’s a sinking reality that her daughter is turning out to be more and more like her father even without his presence. she doesn’t know, and she doesn’t care to find out. she dances. because it’s what has always felt like home, because it’s what always were those few breaths of calm during the storm, and just because she feels alive when she does it. she’s good at it, be it genetics or passion or hard work. that’s how she finds a little dance crew of twenty five kids (ages fourteen to twenty, so they’d argue they’re really not kids) at the age of twelve. for some it’s a hobby, for some it’s a dream they want to make reality, for her it’s chance after chance after event after event to grow.

in this tale, family is found.

they ask her name and her age. comment that she’s the youngest at today’s audition. perhaps it’s meant to be a shock factor, or a fear factor, maybe they say it because they’re impressed, for once with the light blinding her face she isn’t able to read theirs, but it does nothing to her. she’s used to being the youngest, the smallest in a room. she’s the youngest in the crew, she says. they smile, the type of smile adults give when children amuse them. she doesn’t particularly like it but she knows not to do or say anything about that, she stands and waits until they ask her to present what she’s prepared.

and she had never known much about being an idol trainee, the videos she used to watch had never shown the hours and hours of classes (vocal, rap, dance, english, korean, school on top of that!). she manages to keep it a secret from her mother for five months, by then she’s committed to herself to debut and there’s not much, if anything, that can stop her from achieving that (”you’re just like your father”).

the first year is the hardest. she’s never been good with change, has always needed some constant. between another move, many many new faces, and a schedule that’s filled to the brim, it’s hard. she doesn’t say much, and she smiles even less so she wouldn’t be surprised if every other trainee hated her guts or thought she was stuck up. it’s just, hard.

the second year is easier. if her peers think she’s the strangest being alive for suddenly changing up her entire personality, she’d just tell them a quick story about her mother. it’s easier to be herself - to be loud between lessons (sticking her nose where it doesn’t belong), to smile and laugh (even when she’s stuck running errands), and to promise herself she’ll debut (even between the arrival and departure of so many friends). by the third year and a few months, she’s a pro. at least, that’s what she tells herself when it’s debut time which means a whole other round of change.

in this tale, there’s just as many turns and stops on the road to a dream.

lily is a household name, the way bc entertainment intended them to be. and though in the beginning they had a set image for her, they decided to use her way of being for her image (just a bit, enough to pass as a respected idol of course). and maybe her dream doesn’t happen right away, it’d be foolish to think she’d just get to dance and sing. she knows how to be a team player, knows it’s a long game. she doesn’t like it though. she has nothing against her group, not even the girls who have beat her in every position, but she sort of dislikes her company. it happens though, she plays by their rules and she becomes some variety star. at some point that translates to a solo popularity she can’t understand, brands looking for her despite seeming lacking in a group full of talented girls. ten years later, she wouldn’t have expected this kind of life. even more, she wouldn’t have expected to like it.

it didn’t matter which group it would’ve been, or which concept they expected, or whatever image they wanted to glue to her - she was going to make it happen. her story deserves a happy ending, doesn’t it?

in this tale, twenty seven still doesn’t mean having your life together.

image & career

seventeen years old with the sweetest smile, bc entertainment believed song hayi would be a perfect fit for the girl group they had been picturing - a group created with the intent to be the first loves of many, ideal types of all, and ever lasting. the freshness that came from a young teenage girl further pushed the innocent, graceful picture that bc entertainment perfected with lily.

it didn’t matter that her nickname since she was a second year trainee had been the infamous firecracker song, for her boisterous and quirky nature. it didn’t matter that at seventeen, there was no being sure whether she’d grow out or be able to restrain her chaotic ways enough to push out the lily image. what mattered was that she bit her tongue until it was raw and red if need be, what mattered was that she had possessed talent like nobody else, that bc entertainment could scream out look, they aren’t just beautiful but they can sing, dance, and rap!

the public quickly absorbed and raved about the seventeen year old’s charisma on stage. the subtle winks, hair flips, and firecracker energy. charisma wasn’t something that she ever imagined to be remembered for, but the public liked to see her performance on the stage. sure she looked innocent and pure, but they admired how she seemed to be cool and confident as well. she didn’t like that her dance parts were never center, but she did like that she seemed to get many singing killing parts. small wins.

a year into her career, at eighteen years old, she begins to get multiple requests from variety shows asking for appearances. bc is hesitant at first, not wanting to disrupt the image they so carefully created but then it clicks. in a group of ideal types, there has to be one that seems attainable and not so out of reach. that’s the image they’ll push out for her: a (bc) defined firecracker. the public starts to see song hayi who’s clumsy and strangely competitive, song hayi who smiles way too much and laughs way too hard, song hayi who looks so beautiful doing the most ridiculous things. she becomes an entertainer, that’s what she becomes, on and off the stage. someone who people will easily relate to, someone charismatic and with a strong stage presence. someone who is seemingly the “ordinary” girl that, of course, she becomes the publics ideal type.

the rise of popularity and demand for her in variety shows becomes a whirlwind just a year before their contract renewal. bc entertainment had always said we don’t need you to be a choreographer, we pay for them, we just need you to be an entertainer. but she had continuously submitted choreograph requests for songs, all of which were rejected. four years in, she relents. she’s given up and she decides to focus on the career she’s already been building. she’s been doing well following orders, and it isn’t as if she isn’t talented (because she really is, even if it’s just as a leading lady) so she gives in. so that’s how it goes. she follows orders, she continues to be bc’s entertainer and maybe someday that’ll turn into being a choreographer. or a soloist. or anything else. the problem is, song hayi wants to be everything.

future

after ten years in the industry, some would think that idols would be burnt out - and though that could be true for most, that’s not the case for her. she knows there’s no chance she will ever be viewed as a “normal” person and she doesn’t particularly want to be. she likes the fame so far, she likes the fact that she’s slowly (in her mind, in her eyes) turning into a household name for variety. she thinks if she can get some more fixed cast spots under her belt, it’ll really push her out there as a comedian rather than just an idol wanna be comedian.

in terms of choreography - bc entertainment is still stuck on the fact that they’d rather pay for choreographers than let her choreograph for their groups. it’s a bitter pill to swallow and though years ago she relented, in the future it might be an arc where she attempts to submit pieces again (and finally will have them approved, even if it’s partials).

one of the biggest things in her future is a solo career where she gets to put out music that fits the bc style but actually resonates with her as an artist (can we really refer to her as that? she’s still an idol). she’s working hard towards that and by working hard, she’s borderline harassing the company and her manager to make it happen.

since she’s had her foot in many brand deals, 2023 will definitely be the year where she’s pushed more into the fashion world. throughout the year she’ll start transitioning into cf modeling and print modeling as well.

Law & Order Special Victims Unit Season 23 Ep. 17 "Once Upon a Time in El Barrio"

Velasco's former parish priest in Mexico contacted him for assistance when three girls from his hometown went missing in New York City. Benson and her team are facing a trafficking ring supported by a violent cartel.

Three girls in Mexico are discussing a modeling job, and one is instructed to speak English. She is anxious about not being selected. The models will be traveling to NYC. Although she only has $500, she can make her dreams come true for $5,000. In NYC, the girls are instructed to exit a van and take drugs after a long journey. The previous girl refused to take the drug or surrender her phone. She hit the attacker and attempted to flee, but he retaliated by physically assaulting her, pouring urine on her, and setting her on fire.

Rollins is still absent, and Benson informs Fin that Carisi is taking Rollins and the girls to Orlando. Fin expresses concern for Stabler's well-being, as he heard that Stabler was expelled from OC. Velasco interrupts to inform them that a man from his parish needs to speak with them. The man possesses a voicemail recording of the three girls being tortured. Fin receives a call informing him that the burned body of one of the girls has been discovered. Velasco appears visibly shaken.

The body was found by a homeless man. Identification of the body may require DNA and dental analysis. Velasco was able to identify the victim by the cross she was wearing. He contacts the priest, who will pray for the deceased girl and for Velasco. Velasco is deeply saddened by the loss of the girl, and the priest had been a father figure to her, helping him escape from the cartels and come to America. Despite Benson and Fin's orders to go home and rest, Velasco decides to go undercover. He drives down a surprisingly empty road to talk to some prostitutes, but a Mexican prostitute demands $50 before she will speak to him. Velasco pays the fee, only do discover that she is an undercover officer who promptly arrests him.

Benson and Fin arrived at the 29 to straighten things out. Chavez accused the cops of falsely claiming to be working on a case when she busted them. Benson informed Velasco that neither she nor McGrath were happy. If they were not short-staffed, she would take him off the case. However, she wants to work with the 29 to find out what they know.

Chavez is aware of a bakery where there is a lot of gossip. Fin complains about the walk.

The woman who runs the bakery wishes that SVU had come up there before it was too late, but she makes a connection with Velasco.

The police go to a seedy motel, but no one will talk to them. Finally, they find a young girl who cries upon seeing the photos of the victims. Velasco informs Chavez that she interacted well with the girl and suggests that she should talk to her since she seems to be afraid of men

Later, Velasco receives a call from Lucinda, and they agree to meet at the bakery. Chavez is run over by a speeding car, and Lucinda disappears. Chavez passes away. The police are committed to finding the killer and the missing girl.

The bakery woman is distraught and only trusted Rosanny. Velasco speaks to her in Spanish.

Velasco pretends to be injured and goes to a secret clinic for undocumented people, where he finds Lucia. Lucia wants to be released because she fears for her life. She owes money to dangerous people. Benson insists that she can trust them. Lucia reveals that the girls will be sold to another ring and that a police captain forced them to have sex. Before she died, she had told Chavez.

Benson meets Chavez's captain, and they pretend to not know where Lucia is. Velasco has obtained information about the traffickers, including some phone numbers they contacted. He calls one of the numbers, and the captain's phone rings.

The captain has received numerous complaints, yet still managed to get promoted. Lucia is currently under protective custody, but it remains uncertain how long she will remain safe.

During a lineup, the defense attorney complains about the time it takes for Lucia to identify the suspect, and she eventually recognizes the captain.

The captain asserts that he had consensual sex with Lucia, but Benson is skeptical and admonishes him for lying. The captain denies raping anyone, but Benson questions his level of involvement in Chavez's death. He blames Benson and her team for interfering and claims he can provide them with information if they show him more respect. He is requesting immunity and full retirement, and denies any allegations of rape. Fin pulls Benson aside and whispers to her that Lucia is only 15 years old. Benson advises him to consider the consequences of being a pedophile cop in prison.

Baptiste acknowledges the advice, and Benson clarifies that she was not playing a game. Baptiste states that he is needed to locate the girls and the traffickers.

The captain instructed to call Jorge and inform him that Lucia has been found and can be delivered to him. Jorge has a potential buyer for the remaining girls. He requests that the captain obtain a new burner and arrange a meeting place.

Velasco has joined the operation. Fin believes it may be too much for him, but Benson is confident in Velasco's abilities. After some initial mistrust, Jorge brings one of the girls out of a motel room. When Velasco offers to pay 40k for all the girls, Jorge pulls a gun on them. Velasco responds by pulling out his own gun, and a group of cops arrive on the scene. Jorge was surrounded by cops and refused to drop his gun, resulting in a standoff. Eventually, he surrendered and was arrested. Benson released the girls, and Velasco updated the pries, who expressed gratitude.

“hey, love,” you greeted, not attempting to look up from your book.

a tired grunt came out from colin’s lips, walking in the bathroom to freshen up.

colin turned off the light and marched towards you.

“do you want some dinner, colin? i could cook something up for you,” you offered, slamming the book shut and sitting up properly.

“no,” he mumbled, crawling on top of the bed. he removed the pillow from your lap and laid his head on top of it, his arms slipping around your waist. he’s had countless cups of coffee that were supposed to keep him awake. it didn’t, although it made him stuffed.

“okay,” you chuckled, moving a bit to make yourself comfortable.

“have you eaten though?” colin asked, voice muffled.

you hummed, “mhm, had some mac ‘n cheese not too long ago,”

“great,” he grabbed your hand beside him and placed it on top of his head, gesturing you to run your fingers through his hair.

you smiled softly, doing as he beckoned. he let out a content sigh, allowing himself to finally have some shut-eye.

“how was your day, love?” you whispered, halting to see if he was awake.

it took him a few seconds to register your words, his exhaustion consuming him.

“alright, got a bunch of kids to question and,” he let out a yawn, his words slurring together, almost incoherent, “had a few information gathered.”

“yeah? how’s mare doing?” you asked, letting your head fall back against the headboard as you continue to massage his scalp.

“she’s- she’s okay. still reserved, but i think she’s y’know, yeah,” colin blurred, his body slowly shutting down, not used to staying up too late.

you chuckled softly, “alright, sit up for me, detective,”

he whined at your words but doing as you said anyway. you fluffed the pillows and brought the comforter up, “c’mon,”

you laid down comfortably and letting colin curl up beside you, throwing his arm and leg around you as he nuzzled his face in your neck.

you kissed his forehead and hummed a song, making it easier for him to fall asleep.

as colin’s snores filled the room, you took your time to admire the man beside you. your fingertips slowly tracing the creases on his face, “good night, colin. i love you,”

A Little LOKI Theory Post

*SPOILERS FOR LOKI E1-3 BELOW CUT*

I am loathe to admit that I love the new LOKI TV series, mainly because of the Mobius/Loki dynamic, the interesting sci-fi plot, and just... I so far surprisingly like every episode. This was the show I had such low expectations for, because I didn’t really like LOKI – I felt he was the Moriarty of the MCU, overused when they didn’t need him, and making me annoyed by an actor I love.

EXCEPT I’m also a sucker for character-driven, psychoanalysis stories, like all these D+ Marvel shows are, and it’s leaving me super shocked about me liking characters I didn’t before. I’m fully invested in all these characters now.

I think the only reasom I really wanted to see this show for was because it ties directly into the next Dr. Strange movie, so YEAH, I’m in love multiverse and time travel things, so it was inevitable that I would enjoy this show, I think.

AND of course, I’ve theories and speculations because there’s a lot to work with, and I LOVE stories like these, so I decided I would take some time out and stretch out my meta-writing grey cells. And I wanted somewhere to have my theories/ideas written out before they come to fruition, because DAMNIT I have headcanons and hopes and dreams.

So here we go, spoilers below cut. Please note I know nothing about the comics aside from what other theorists and reviewers have mentioned:

The TVA are “the bad guys” but I think it goes deeper than that... Like the whole Timekeeper thing is really sus. I think it’s only one Timekeeper, who is Kang the Conqueror, who maintains the Sacred Timeline to ensure that he stays in power to PREVENT the Multiverse War which I think he knows happened to stop him. I also think Renslayer is behind all of this suspicious thing; I learned that in the comics Renslayer is a love interest for Kang, so like........... SUS.

AND I think Multiverse War they talked about in the beginning of the show IS the Multiverse War they’re ABOUT TO HAVE. This is a show about non-linear time, and there’s hints about multiverses in the next Spiderman, and Dr Strange is LITERALLY called “Multiverse of Madness”. Wild Theory: Maybe Doctor Strange IS one of the Time Keepers following the Multiverse War.

Loki initially wants to learn the enchanting that Sylvie does for his own selfish gain, and I think he was lying about breaking the TempPad so he would force her to open up. HOWEVER, I think he had a sudden change of heart after learning about the TVA’s Variant Staff; we already see him sort of fond of both Mobius and remembers Casey’s name, so I feel like that he will end up using this knowledge he gained very differently.

Further on this point, they established in Ep 3 that TVA agents / staff need actual real memories to “manipulate” them. So, I think Loki will use this power he learned from Sylvie (I mean, she explained to him how to do it, and this show is really good at using the “Chekov’s guns” given to us) to bring Mobius to “his side”, and TOGETHER they take down the TVA and make it what it should be. Mobius is very dedicated to the TVA, so I really do forsee that it will be Loki “freeing” Mobius as the catalyst to swaying to siding with Loki until the end. He’s a good man with a big heart for humanity, so I think he will totally side with freeing everyone else.

On that note, I think the reason Mobius is fascinated with the nineties is because he’s a variant jetskiier pulled from the nineties. I suspect in his original timeline he probably had a jetski accident and died, but in the Variant timeline, he survived, and out of pity I think Renslayer “saved” him and recruited him. The TVA wiped his memories after he couldn’t cope with the fact that he was SUPPOSED to die.

ALSO still on Mobius, I think every time he keeps questioning too much, he gets his memory wiped, which would explain why he never remembers leaving the cup stains on Renslayer’s table.

I think there’s more to Miss Minutes than meets the eye. Another theory I had was that she was similar to VIKI in iRobot, essentially running the company to her programmed “laws” after the TimeKeepers passed on. So like there’s no TimeKeepers at all, but there was at one time, and Miss Minutes was left to her own devices.

Another theory similar to this, is the Doctor Who episode, The Long Game, where everyone wants to be promoted to “Floor 500″ because it’s rumoured to be a paradise and is the top floor no one has ever returned from; It turns out it’s run by an alien that feeds on the human or something similar, and the people who went to the top floor ended up frozen husks of who they were. Not saying it’s this exact thing, but more the idea that everyone thinks what’s upstairs is a magical wonderful benevolent corporation looking out for what’s best for everyone, but instead it’s one evil thing doing stuff for their own purpose. Eh.

Another rogue theory: Mobius IS a Loki variant, which is why he’s obsessed with Loki himself, knows Loki better than Loki knows himself, and either knows and omitted it, or DOESN’T know but naturally is intrigued by the Loki Variant and him always finding out the truth is WHY his memory keeps getting wiped, and why everyone is always squeamish about having a Loki around. Mobius mentioned that Loki is the one Variant they have stopped more Lokis than any other Variant....

On that thought: IF Lokis are the most common Variant they capture, I think a LOT of the TVA are Loki Variants, trapped in the forms they were presenting as when they were brought in, and because magic doesn’t work in the TVA, they CAN’T turn off the glamour, had their memories wiped, and in turn could now be Codenamed Casey, or Mobius, or B15........ An abstract theory, but I think it’s interesting.

And another, since I learned that it is in the comics: Mobius is a clone drone. This one saddens me and I really hope he’s not. Because I love Mobius.

I think Sylvie was a Variant who worked for the TVA, but somehow had an awakening and wants to free everyone else... the only thing against this theory is her seeming surprised that her magic stopped working when she arrived at the TVA. If she was an agent, she would know that magic doesn’t work within the TVA.

And I think this series will inevitably – if the rumours of a Season 2 are true – have the Mobius / Loki dynamic solving Time Crimes... a.... Holmes and Watson if you will. :D HAHHA.

So yeah. This list will change obviously for the next 3 weeks, and I had a lot of fun with this so I will probably keep it up.

Some things I hope happen by the end:

A giant “probably not going to happen because this is Disney”: I hope they pay-off the “bisexual” confirmation by the end of this... highkey with Mobius (damn it I ship them okay), but lowkey just even a passing remark about anyone LOL. I really ship Lokius, okay. I need this dynamic in the MCU

PLEASE DON’T KILL CASEY, we love Casey. #FREECASEY

I’ll be really honest here, I will effing GROAN and be a not-happy Steph if they do the ship that I think they’re gonna do: Sylvie x Loki. Which is weird to me that Disney would be okay with self-love, but the OBVIOUS initial dynamic of Loki x Mobius is too much, “look we gave you bisexual Loki, aren’t you happy enough??” Just. I dunno. It’s weird / a pet peeve of mine that a lot of online reviewers are bitching about “woke” Disney the one time they ACTUALLY FINALLY let a title character say they’re queer, but are all “UWU SYLVIE AND LOKI ARE GONNA GET TOGETHER BECAUSE LOKI LOVES HIMSELF UWU”. Even though Loki spent legit more screen time with Mobius, and literally did everything he told Sylvie that he wouldn’t do around people he doesn’t trust around Mobius ALREADY?? It’s like they already forgot about the first two eps. LEGIT the whole dagger=love metaphor LITERALLY happened in the previous two episodes, but alright chiefs. Anyway. Sorry, it’s stupid to be bothered by it. 

We’re gonna get that heart wrench moment that the other two shows had, and I TRULY BELIEVE it’s gonna be between Loki and Mobius when Loki tells / shows Mobius the truth. LOOK I JUST WANT MORE OF THEM OKAY. And I need my heart ripping moment in this show within the next two eps LOL. We got one in WandaVision. We got one in FATWS. GIVE ME ONE IN LOKI. MAKE ME LIKE LOKI.

Anyway, so that’s my rambling. Thanks for taking time out to read all this. I miss theorizing, and this show is perfect for me to do it. I’m not AS good at these shows as I was with Sherlock, but it’s still fun, because it’s new and my brain is full of headcanons and idea things. SONG JIHYO. aka goddess and best at everything. i think i’m very drawn to personalities that always dominate n come out on top. jihyo isn’t really known for being the ace of running man anymore but in my heart she always is :( i also am a HUGE fan of her goddess of luck image like she isn’t as crazily lucky these days bc kwangsoo (icon of misfortune) is gone but if anything makes me believe in supernatural like. the concept of LUCK being a real force in the universe it would be because of her. the way she overcomes odds n comes out on top despite being a bit of an underdog in many situations is SO hot to me. here’s some pictures of her

(ep119) and i’ll stop here bc the second people realize i have many episode numbers memorized i’ll look like a crazy person

okay, it’s over :) 

first thoughts out of the way: not a big fan of this special. it’s like watching a completely different show. it’s not got the PZSHAHH of the normal wizard city stuff and there weren’t a lot of funny jokes or even hearty moments in the thing. 

it suffers from a lack of invested character interactions, much like BMO did. there was not a single main cast member in the whole thing! and like i said before, much of peppermint butler’s character in the show is based on his very sweet relationship to his mother, princess bubblegum, so when they showed a single (hilarious) photo of them together it made me sad we didn’t get any scenes with them together. it would have STOLEN this episode. and they teased the hunson golf photo, and death!!! and jake appeared in a photo T_T last jake appearance. 

it also suffers because Peppermint Butler is clearly not himself, imo he was way more entertaining in the Together Again special, where we seem him back to his “normal” self. 

i dont think peps being a dark wizard was something to “kill off” exactly. i wonder what was going on there? was that actually peps, or was that a spirit he cursed himself with based on himself? we at least know in the future he does become a dark wizard again, and even princess :) this special didn’t answer those questions but lol. 

THE GOOD STUFF, because yes, there was a lot of good stuff! 

God, I’m with Aracle and Maya on this - I LOVE Cadebra and her relationship to Pep. I wish she was even in more of this - I would love to watch the adventures of Cadebra and Pepbut in their first year of school, like in the end credits.

That, imo, is where the heart of the special lay - Peppermint Butler’s attempts to impress himself, versus Cadebra’s self acceptance and desire to follow her dreams of being a goofy goober, no matter what other people thought of her. 

It turned out that Cadebra is a responsible student and family member. I really liked that. Her scenes with Abracadaniel were, somehow, my favourite in the entire special! 

I like that theres a lot of cool magic towards the end of this special, and a lot of HORRIFYING DEATH. It wouldn’t be adventure time if you didn’t randomly kill off child characters. Poor Spader, I hated you but damn, what a grim fate. 

I like that Bufo and Caledonius had this crush/hatred thing going on, but they were part of the same cult in the end. 

I didn’t like the giant peps scene at the end, the monster was extremely milquetoast compared to the madness we usually get in AT. Obsidian, for example, had the awesome Larvo design. Nemesis had some INSANE dark magic!!!!  I wish they drew more from that episode. 

Considering how much Steve Little appears in this special, I do feel bad for Mace (little Peps). He said he would have really benefitted from coaching, but recieved none. He had to re-record his lines 3 times! Judging from his description of events, Wizard City was a hard time for him. 

The wizard school did remind me, heavily, of both The Owl House and OK KO. Personally I was hoping AT would offer me something more insane, but I do love both of those shows, and I know Wizard City was on a really tight schedule. 

I think they should have spent less time on the school bullying plot, and skipped straight to MURDER. 

We did have a cold opening, not on par with Together Again’s at all, but damn!

I am wondering where I would put this in the watch list? I do think it should sit after Obsidian as the third special. The intro scene makes it clear this takes place at the same time as Obsidian!!!

Well, that was it, the last ep of AT for the next few years at least T_T

i think together again was the better finale, definitely. but wizard city feels pretty detached from AT for me, despite the familiar characters it tonally isn’t like the show other than the awesome brutal death scenes. I thought the last 11 minutes was easily the best in the special! Which, honestly, is how it should be, though I do wish it gripped me more. Maybe I’m just not the target audience for Wizard City? It feels like something I would find very compelling if I was a bit younger!
