Mater Suspiriorum

In his book Suspiria De Profundis, Thomas De Quincey talks about the three Ladies of Sorrow. The second one is Mater Suspiriorum, Our Lady Of Sighs.

«The second sister is called Mater Suspiriorum , Our Lady of Sighs. She never scales the clouds, nor walks abroad upon the winds. She wears no diadem. And her eyes, if they were ever seen, would be neither sweet nor subtle; no man could read their story; they would be found filled with perishing dreams, and with wrecks of forgotten delirium. But she raises not her eyes; her head, on which sits a dilapidated turban, droops forever, forever fastens on the dust. She weeps not. She groans not. But she sighs inaudibly at intervals. (...) She also carries a key; but she needs it little.»

Прочла "Матерь Тьмы" Фрица Лейбера. Не роман, а, скорее, повесть, вдохновленная Де Куинси, Лавкрафтом, Кларком Эштоном Смитом, Мейченом и другими авторами "черной" литературы - вклад в общую мифологию, формируемую в умах читателей. Герой - литератор в кризисе, живущий, обложившись книжками всех упомянутых выше, включая и самого Лейбера, писателей в "нехорошей" квартире... Точнее, он не подозревает о ее "нехорошести", пока однажды не взглянет на прогулке через бинокль на собственное окно и не узреет в нем чудовище, которое смотрит на него в ответ... Изящный подарок фанатам жанра с кучей отсылок и упоминаний классики. Тем же, кому эти Смиты и Лавкрафты - только чьи-то имена на полках в разделе ужасов в книжном, книга, наверное, покажется типичным средним ужастиком из семидесятых. Понравилось, но не как что-то выдающееся: для большего веса такие вещи стоит издавать в компании с другими страшными историями. Нынешний читатель, наверное, может быть знаком скорее не с Де Куинси, а с "Тремя матерями" Дарио Ардженто, которые, опять же, были вдохновлены Suspiria de Profundis. Собственно Матерь Тьмы появляется в фильме Inferno, где она также обитает в стенах многоквартирного дома со смутной историей проектировки.

«Her eyes are sweet and subtle, wild and sleepy, by turns; oftentimes rising to the clouds, oftentimes challenging the heavens. She wears a diadem round her head. (...) This sister, the elder, it is that carries keys more than papal at her girdle, which open every cottage and every palace. (...) Sighs from the depths of her parents' tired lips became a sound Uraraka Ochako became very familiar with at a very young age.
