first off if u volunteer at the library ur a nerd second off i love volunteering at the library for a lot of reasons but one of them is bc when i shelve i get to have a little look into peoples personality

#for example a girl with the last name shetty got a book about gifted children and im like okay.. then another person got the entire twisted #fairytales series AND i saw some sat prep in there #PLUS i found my own books that were ready for hold too LMAO got to check those out before they were ready ready #i also loooooove the library + its easy to take my mind off things when i’m focused on the alphabet AND everyone is so super nice here #no one noticed my ‘what’s more punk than the public library’ tote though 😔

Ways to Solarpunk-up your neighborhood

The "punk" part of solarpunk is, of course, defying societal norms and governmental laws in the name of building a better future.

Isee a lot of great things happening, such as community gardens, climate protests and more and more people going vegetarian/vegan etc. I took a walk around my neighborhood yesterday to find things that I like about my town. I love to see people planting fruit trees in their garden. I love the little shops in their driveway/front yard with their harvested crops, homemade jam, fruit juice etc.

Public art

I love this artist, who, every few weeks, puts up a new string art piece. It's weird and I doubt the local government likes it. I'm friends with the artist's neighbor, and she says that they want to "decorate the town with art". That's a pretty punk statement that I definitely can get behind. It certainly is fun to see what the artist has come up with every time I walk past.

Mini libraries

Mini libraries can be found in every neighborhood. People place them in their front yard. This one has a little bench with it too. I love it so much. Access to free books, all day, everyday, almost everywhere. Tell me that isn't such a solarpunk initiative. They've sprouted up the last decade like weeds and I couldn't be happier.

Give & take cabinet

What's a better way to show your community you care about them than a give & take cabinet. Clothes, shoes dishes, menstrual items, shampoo and more. I'm planning on tidying up this cabinet soon and adding some stuff of my own. As someone who is pretty tight on money myself, I'm very happy to see a way I can get stuff I need if I'm in a pitch.

If you want you can give it a twist, you could consider making a tools library or a food cabinet as well.

Let's take care of each other and take care of our planet! We can build a kinder, better future if we tried. Love and Peace💚☮🌍

Something about the way bibliopunk/punk academia is treated on here Bugs Me and I think it can be best summed up as this:

You can't just throw the "punk" descriptor onto whatever you like and call it an aesthetic

Punk is not an aesthetic

Punk is a mindset, it's a philosophy-- it's a rebellion against societal systems

When I say bibliopunk, I don't mean sweater vests and old library photos and quotes from classics.

Bibliopunk, to me, a punk librarian, is about freedom of information. It's about making sure everyone and anyone can have the resources they need to learn, whatever that means for them. It's no late fees and fighting against censorship. It's defunding the police and funding community resource centers that specialize in making sure there's a place where people can go to ask for help, to read books on any subject they can think of, to connect with events and organizations that exist to help THEM. It's about making zines and learning how to bookbind, because fuck the idea that traditional publishing and Amazon are the only people that can make something a book.

Punk academia, which is used colloquially here, is related to this-- it's saying fuck the academic systems that keep out the poor, the people of color, and the disabled. Fuck your Ivy Leagues, education is whatever the hell you make it. College should be free, classes should be accessible WITHOUT being forced to give up all of your personal financial and health information, curriculums need to include as many varying perspectives as they can because fuck the idea that a cishet abled white man is the authority on any given topic.

Bibliopunk, punk academia, and any other Tumblr "aesthetic" with the punk descriptor is not just a moodboard of photos you stole from Pinterest.

Because what's more punk than a public library?

general mattheo riddle headcanons ☆ミ ☆彡

• to everyone else, mattheo is an uncaring bad boy - that is his reputation, that will always be his reputation

• but deep down, he's really a sweetheart

• he loves muggle music, more than he's willing to admit; the smith's, of course, and basically anything 60s and 70s; i'd say he also really loves punk rock, like the ramones

• out of all the slytherin boys, he's closest with blaise

• he and draco are actually not as close as you'd think them to be

• if anything, i feel like mattheo knows draco, pansy, crabbe, and goyle but he's not very close with them - he is, however, close with blaise and theodore nott

• he doesn't smoke - sorry for those of you who stan bad boy!mattheo but he just doesn't

• he likes to create art - he's never shown anyone, not even blaise

• he particularly likes to go out late at night to various parts of the grounds and draw what he sees - the black lake, near hagrid's hut, the astronomy tower, the clock tower, etc.

• he is not a morning person AT ALL, this man is a night owl

• he's actually a very nice person - very funny and sarcastic

• he doesn't have any interest in romance (that is until he meets you ofc)

• he's very smart but has no interest in academics

• he thinks he'd like to run a small shop somewhere

• he loves the quiet, but won't spend time in the library so people don't think he's some kind of nerd

• he likes scented candles and keeps some in his dorm - hides them from the others

• once, they found a candle in the room when mattheo forgot to put it away but it was on blaise's desk - blaise dealt with the teasing from the others for mattheo

• professor mcgonagall has a soft spot for him

• he thinks quidditch is stupid

• not really a sweet tooth or a big foodie

• doesn't really like parties either - like i said, he likes the quiet and only goes for blaise's sake

• the only class he actually loves is history of magic - he finds it kind of fascinating - shhhh don't tell anyone

• likes to go out on walks - at night though, that's the best time

• reads poetry, don't tell anyone I said that either

• he basically loves literature, poetry, music, solace, and the stars

• pretends he doesn't care about his friends that much but if you actually look close, he really loves them and does a lot of things for them

• he's not that talkative, so he usually listens and is very observant

• his favorite season is winter and he stays for the winter holidays each year

• he loves to explore the castle, especially during this time

• when he does fall in love with someone, he makes it plainly obvious to them and only them

• he'll flirt with you, no shame

• the most romantic shit and you don't even know him very well

• but once your his, then EVERYONE will know

• if someone else tries to touch you, he will go balls on that person

• he'll annihilate them

• yeah, he's a bit possessive

• no one can understand why you like him cause he seems like such an arse, but he's actually a sweetheart

• his love languages are physical touch and gift-giving

• expect small little gifts EVERYWHERE - he will hide this shit in your robes, your textbooks and parchment scrolls, in your pillowcase and on your desk

• he also ALWAYS has to be touching you somehow - hand on your waist, holding your pinky, brushing against his shoulder, arm swung around your shoulder, etc.

• not very into kissing in public - no, that's personal and just for you and him

• hopeless romantic, i don't make the rules babes 🤷‍♀️

• he loves teasing you and getting you all flustered

• will take you on dates to hogsmeade

• will never step foot inside madame puddifoot's

• and also late night dates - sneaking into different places like the library, the astronomy tower, and various places that have a good view of the grounds

• he doesn't like letting you do anything - by this i mean, he opens doors for you, if you drop something, he'll pick it up he'll carry your books and school bag, etc.

• expect to become best friends with blaise

• there's no way around it - mattheo and blaise are a package, you get one, you get the other

• abandonment issues, daddy issues, mommy issues-

• he overthinks a bit, so sometimes he needs reassurance that you're not going to leave him

• while he's constantly showering you with affection and praises, he needs his fair share too

• don't neglect your boy mattheo

• no one puts baby in a corner

thinking abt fic ideas as someone who can’t write is painful…. like. i’m obsessed w modern aus rn

(i have a few mutuals that write so if you guys wanna……….. 👀 take inspiration from this…… 👀 tag me so i can read it !!)

Lance and Hunk work at a library and like to people watch, guessing what genres they like to read. a grunge/punk guy with the worst RBF walks in and they’re really surprised to see he’s checking out classic romance literature.

idk something with public transportation? like they take the same train/bus/subway every day but they never actually talk— just eyes that meet occasionally and a polite smile but nothing more. until one day, the other guy just.. stops showing up? and Lance is pretty bummed but what can he do? (and then he sees a familiar mop of black hair at the grocery store or a café or something and is like “!! it’s you!!”)

The trio go out to see the next installment of their favorite movie series, but Lance keeps sneaking out of the theater to buy more snacks (and definitely not to talk to the hot guy running the concession stand)

Keith works at a convenience store/gas station and this tall, beautiful man comes in occasionally, but no matter what he buys, he always always always gets a bag of candy that just so happens to be Keith’s favorite too— he always has a bag at his station so he can snack on it throughout his shift. One day, the man is in line without the candy and he honestly looks like shit— he’s definitely not his usual, happy self. Keith asks about the candy. The man replies, “Oh, i couldn’t find any today... You guys must be out.” So Keith gives him a bag from his stash. “You look like you need it more than me.”

Lance goes to the campus library to check out books for his literature class, but every single time, without fail, someone else has taken the last copy. “What do you mean someone else checked out the last copy?? Who??” “That guy.” *insert Keith* (it would be funnier if Keith isn’t even reading them for class, he’s just reading classic literature for funsies)

Lance checks out a novel from the library and there’s an envelope inside with a name written neatly on the front of it. it looks like it’s important so he resolves to find and return the envelope to K. Kogane, whoever that is (another library one?? yeah sorry idc i love public libraries and books and love stories . sue me.)

Keith is a barber/hairdresser and Lance’s regular stylist isn’t available so he’s stuck with Keith -OR- Lance takes his nephew to get his hair cut and Keith looks kinda scary but he’s actually?? really good with kids?? (insert mullet joke here)

Keith meets Pidge’s friends from a different class. Keith is super into Pidge’s hot, tall friend but is discouraged from acting on it because he’s constantly glued to Hunk’s side and making comments like “this is why I love you, Hunky” and (wrongfully) assumes they’re dating (but Lance is just that kind of guy! yk! he says “ily” to his friends all the time!)

bartender Keith is so good but think abt bartender Lance……… yeah….. need i say more??

‘No one else is saving it’: the fight to protect a historic music collection

The ARChive of Contemporary Music, which houses more than 90m songs and is supported by names such as Martin Scorsese, is in need of a new home

It all started in a loft in Tribeca, New York, long before it was a trendy neighbourhood. “I had 47,000 records and nobody wanted them,” recalls Bob George, who had just published a discography of punk and new wave music. “That led a lot of people coming to me and saying you have to save this stuff; no one else is saving it. That got the ball rolling in my loft in what is now fashionable Tribeca, which was an incredibly unfashionable war zone in 1974 when I was first there.”

George turned his record collection into the ARChive of Contemporary Music (Arc) in 1985 with co-founder David Wheeler. The non-profit music library and research centre now contains more than 3m sound recordings or over 90m songs, making it one of the biggest popular music collections in the world. Donors and board members have included David Bowie, Jonathan Demme, Lou Reed, Martin Scorsese and Paul Simon.

The Arc is not open to the public but has been a vital resource for film-makers, writers and researchers ranging from Ken Burns looking for a song for his series Baseball to the new Grammy Hall of Fame and Museum in Los Angeles needing cover art for its inducted recordings. Now, however, this unique treasure trove is under existential threat.

OUGH :))) this ended up becoming a little bit fantasy au too, hope that's alright! under a cut because this got surprisingly long!

punk's a warlord king, and max is the spy sent to infiltrate his palace, find his secrets, and help overthrow him. it does not go as planned.

He's thrown to his knees on the marble tiling, and his heart thuds a frantic drumbeat behind his ribs as one of the guards forces his head down.

“We found him in your quarters on the upper floors, Sir. We've searched his pockets, but it doesn't seem like he managed to steal anything before he captured him.”

That's what you think, Max thinks to himself, but keeps his mouth shut. Best they think him just a common thief, and don't look too deeply into where he was searching–

There's a soft splash of water, and the scent of jasmine fills his nose. “In my upper quarters? Not the library, not the Eastern Wing?”

Max tenses on his knees. Difficult to fight years of ingrained habit. Bow before the King. Don't look upon his face. Obey his word as though it was the word of God.

And the word of God seems to be questioning his skills at thievery.

The man whose hands are pressed firmly on Max's shoulders confirms, and there's another splash of water.

“Leave us,” he says, with that same commanding tone that Max has heard at every public address since he came to power.

The hands holding his head down vanish. Their armoured footsteps fade away until the door clicks behind them. Leaving them alone. Max tilts his head up, schooling his face into something akin to fear. It's not difficult.

His first thought is that the King looks older than he'd imagined. There's grey at his temples, threaded through his closely cropped beard.

Powerful, too; Max glances at the heavily scarred arms bracing against the bathtub His Highness is reclining in, pushing himself up with bulging biceps, and Max realises with a start that the markings up his arms, across his chest and shoulders aren't scars, they're...

They're ink. Tattoos. Like those of a prisoner, or a...

Warlord.

Max's eyes trail down his stomach as the King lifts himself higher, until he catches the thatch of hair between his legs and forces his eyes back up. A mistake, because it means meeting the King's eyes instead.

He takes a step towards Max. Then another, water running in rivulets down his body, the scent of jasmine filling his nose more and more as he comes closer and closer and Max's heart pounds harder and harder in his chest until he thinks he might pass out.

There are fingers cupping his jaw. Tilting his head up. Slightly oily from the bath, and still hot.

“A thief that avoids all of my treasures, all of my arms, only to find himself within arms' reach of my rooms? My secrets?”

There's no question in his voice. His eyes are knowing, piercing, intense and amused.

“Not a thief, then,” he continues, and Max's heart almost stops entirely. He's been found. “So what were you looking for, my little spy?”

listen ok im by no means an expert on what is or is not "punk" but i think what the ceaseless labelling of things as punk comes down to is the inability for people to conceptualise that something can be both a set of political beliefs and an aesthetic.

like ok. so you have punks. and punks are cool. but you also have posers, who wear pre-ripped jeans and vote conservative. and you go "oh no, these people should NOT be here". so you go and you remind everything "being punk is more than just looking the part!!! you cant be bigoted/conservative/etc and still be punk!!!: .

and people understand that, and go "ok, being punk means being anti-authority, fighting against the system, and having progressive values. and then people decide that those things ALONE are what makes punk, punk. so going to your public library is punk now, because conservatives want to censor books/supporting libraries is good for your community/etc. and those are good things!!! visit your public library!!! but its not punk. it doesn't make you NOT a punk if you go to a public library. but going to the library does not automatically make you a punk.

and then someone says "hey guys, uh, why do none of these punks look like punks?" and then someone says "get out of here poser, everyone knows punk isn't a look, it's a system of beliefs and values!"

its BOTH. its fucking BOTH. are you unable to conceptualise two things being true at once. two things that dont even conflict!!!! its about acting the part AND looking the part.

(also theres probably a whole additional thing about how punks havent had the exact same progressive beliefs that they have now for all of human history forever, but im not knowledgable enough about the subculture's history to really speak on that)

my friend wants to research punk so she can decide whether to join with me or not, can you give me a bunch of leads to give her so she knows enough that "Mama Bear" knows she doesn't need to look the part or have a loud personality to join?

I'm not sure I have any sources for you on this, but what I can share with you are my experiences.

As far as looking the part, something that @polyamorouspunk and I both agree on is that you don't have to stick to a punk aesthetic to be punk. Punk is SO much more than an aesthetic! I promise you that there is a good chunk of the time that you will catch me walking around in cowboy boots, a hat, and a flannel. Actually I have three cowboy hats. They are all different colors. And on top of that, I will die on the hill that Mr. Rogers was one of the most punk fuckers out there and he wore sweater vests on the daily.

Loud personality? Let me tell you right now, the big, bad, and loud look that is so often associated with punk is true. BUT. Its not the only way to be punk. Not everyone is a front line fighter. Not everyone can be a front line fighter. Its not in everyone's nature to be a front line fighter. We need people in our community to be educators and advocates. We have people who take care of the community and do guerilla gardening. We have people who organize events for minorities in safe spaces. Ever heard the phrase "Nothing is more punk than the public library"? Well its true. It is SO SO SO SO true. You absolutely don't have to be loud and scary to be a punk. Again. Mr. Rogers is such a good example here. He stuck to his morals but otherwise just went on living his life.

YIPPEE for OC-tober! This is my favorite OC of mine, Drax (also Laura, Dracula, or full name Draculaura)! This fag was my he/she bigender awakening (he's a little aged, but I still absolutely adore her 🫀🫀)

She was made for a paranormal research team, along with OCs made by a group of friends (inc. @bensiskos and @littlegreenfags), that researched things like ghosts, aliens, bigfoot, and mothman! Together, they try to study these canonical phenomenon and prove their existence to a skeptical public, all while living in a van together so they can travel the continent for said research!

He's like the asshole older brother from a kid's show and a protective older sister at the same time. Never getting enough sleep, she's also more of a nerd than her appearance would let on. When they're stopped in a town, the library is his favorite place to be, doing tons of research in her free time and reading gothic literature and horror pulp fiction. Other things he likes:

parking lots at night

gas stations

5-hour energy

being taller than other people, esp guys that look down on his swagful femme self (can't look down if ur forced to look up)

punk, goth rock, death metal, and any loud music made by nobodies in a garage.

collecting CDs from random underground shows

working audio recording equipment (did tech for high school theatre and is responsible for working the research recording equipment presently)

getting morally grey with it
