What is Diluc like in a relationship?

The day you found out his feelings, he didn’t approach the matter like most men in Mondstadt. He didn’t smile, nor did he meet your gaze. If you had to be honest with yourself, it seemed as if he wanted to be anywhere but here with you. Yet even with his stiff expression, he asked if you would meet him on the veranda privately. There, with the sun setting from behind and a slight dusting of red upon his cheeks, he then requested permission to court you. 

It doesn’t take you very long to notice how awkward he is in his courtship of you. Whenever you walk side by side, he always keeps a respectable distance. He does not reach for your hand, nor does he hold you close. Still, you can’t deny he’s earnest. Every meeting greets you with a bouquet of flowers. Every parting leaves you with a kiss upon your hand. 

It takes you a bit longer to see through his cold exterior. How his frowns when you speak are only in frustration due to not knowing how to respond in a way that’ll make you smile. How his eyes tend to follow you when he thinks you are not looking. How he turns away to hide his smiles when you do something that warms his heart. 

You come to the conclusion that even though he left his past behind him, he is a knight through and through. Never having been in a relationship before, he lets propriety dictate the way he acts toward you. It’s so incredibly stiff and awkward, you can’t deny that. And yet, when you look in his eyes, all you can feel is warmth.

Relationship-focused

Though you may have realized it before entering into a relationship with him, it only becomes even more noticeable after that Xiao isn’t one to express his needs. Oftentimes, it’s only until after he’s fully withdrawn himself that you realize something may have happened that caused him undue stress. It takes you time to realize that it’s not because he’s upset with you or that he doesn’t trust you; it’s simply that he does not wish to inconvenience you with his problems. It’ll take time and patience before he feels truly comfortable relying on you during his weakest moments.

just generally musing to myself what makes thematic and plot sense for the link clink ending after reading some other people's takes the past few days. no real conclusions here, just some thoughts tied together with a string.

I've seen arguments that what needs to happen is that Lu Guang needs to accept Cheng Xiaoshi's fate and move on without regrets. This idea that the past has to remain as-is and you have to move on is a thread that the show has played with quite a few times. It's written into the very rules underlying the dives. The most obvious instance being the earthquake arc, where Cheng Xiaoshi was unable to save Chen Xiao's mum, but he *was* able to deliver the messages and thereby help CX gain closure. It's laid out by Lu Guang that it *was* worth it to deliver the words, and Cheng Xiaoshi takes this conclusion with him when he confronts Emma. (Of course, the fact this lesson was given by *Lu Guang* casts a different shade over the whole affair. I don't think it can be entirely discarded, given LG even admits he's going against his own rules, but it reads more like something he's trying and failing to convince himself of.)

So, the past has to stay as it is. We see a few different approaches to this idea in s2 - of people refusing to move on and trying to change the past. Qian Jin wants to force his wife "not to cheat"; he wants to alter her behaviour because she didn't act as he wanted. Li Tianchen wanted to change how *he* acted back then, even if indirectly, because he sees himself as his mother's killer, and thinks this is the point at which his tragedy was locked into place. They both thought their 'tragedies' were down to a single event. It's not that simple.

Lu Guang wants to personally protect Cheng Xiaoshi by controlling all scenarios. Not exactly taking his will, but limiting his choices. There's probably a whole post to be made on how QJ/LTC/LG each approach the agency of the ones they want to protect, but that's not for now.

Anyway, Li Tianchen as the foil to Lu Guang. At the end of s2, he has in theory let go of Li Tianxi but in practice he's just burying himself deeper by following Liu Xiao. Trying to entirely shun the past so he can believe that he still has some element of control. Both LTC and LG are at the extreme ends of clinging on vs letting go and that means the correct answer has to lie somewhere in the middle. Not shunning the past, but accepting it, and using that resolve to move forward.

So, Liu Xiao. We don't have much on him but what we do have is his belief that uncertainties should become certainties. He's deterministic and set explicitly as the counter to Lu Guang, whose own aim is to change events rather than lock them into place. They both want to *control* all aspects, but for differing reasons. In fate vs free will, it makes sense that our protagonist is on the side of free will, but it's interesting that he's presented himself so much as the opposite previously. He and CXS haven't exactly switched places, but to the audience, they've definitely taken on traits of the other.

Liu Xiao's whole spiel about how all options will eventually lead to the same outcomes, with him set *against* Lu Guang, very much seems like it's a setup for a "defeat fate" type plotline though. It's hammered in that there is no escape, no other option. Are we expected to accept this? It doesn't seem so. It's something I'm struggling to reconcile somewhat with the earlier messages about accepting the past, but maybe that's not quite it. Maybe it's about control vs freedom?

Trust fall. Every dive with LG and CXS is an act of mutual trust where they need to act in tandem. Dives go astray when one party acts without the other. For CXS, this is about him acting against LG's instructions (texting Emma's parents, staying in the earthquake dive). For LG, this is about him withholding info because he doesn't trust how CXS will react.

Lu Guang needs to put his trust in CXS before his withholding of information creates an unresolvable rift. He needs to stop trying to control CXS in order to keep him safe. We saw how that spun out for Li Tianchen and Li Tianxi. LG needs to put the choice into Cheng Xiaoshi's hands and let him decide his own fate. It reminds me of how Cheng Xiaoshi laid everything out for Emma and let her decide whether to live. It was only outside interference that prevented her, but she did make the choice to survive. And she did it by remembering those small moments. By accepting that tragedy happens but there are still people that make it worth it.

For LG and CXS, they need to mutually trust each other and that's how they'll find their way through.

ㅤbyan finds haru's demeanor very off-putting at first. they don't like that she's so caring, so understanding, and so patient. they've seen it all in foster parents before, and it never lasted — there's always a limit to all that compassion and byan always finds it, intentionally or not. at this point in their life, they try to bring foster parents to this limit as quickly as possible so they can't build any sort of relationship with them and thus they can't be hurt when they're inevitably sent away. haru, however, has been a tougher nut to crack than byan anticipated. nothing seems to faze her. no matter what awful stunt they pull or cruel words they spew, she always comes back with that same compassion. they don't understand. they do, however, find the entire thing extremely annoying because it feels to them like she's just drawing out the inevitable.

ㅤagainst their will and better judgement, byan has grown to care more about haru through their time in the household. they hate it, but they find a comfort in her presence that they're not sure they ever have with someone before and, if they have, it hasn't been since they were very young. they try to resist this feeling of comfort and the growing trust that comes with it, not wanting to let themself come to rely on her in any way or, god forbid, get attached, but every time she patches up their injuries without berating them and calling them a disappointment or shows them care without pity, she makes a little more progress in breaking through their defensive walls.

ㅤbyan has developed a fondness for going shopping with haru when she has the free time to take them. something about the way she waits patiently for them to look around as thoroughly as they please, or maybe the way she points out things she thinks they'll like (and is usually right about)... they don't feel rushed, and they don't feel judged for the sort of things they enjoy. i like to think they have a standing appointment like, once a month where she takes them to fabric and craft stores to collect new materials for the clothes and accessories byan likes to make.

ㅤhonestly, byan has probably opened up to haru at least a little on one or two occasions about some of their history. nothing too detailed, none of the particularly traumatic things, but still a bit less surface-level than the sort of things they'll usually share. they relate to haru far more than xiao because she grew up in poverty and, after learning about that part of her background, they feel that she might understand some of their experiences in a way that no previous foster parent ever has.

ㅤthough they get along with him better, byan trusts xiao less than they do haru. they have deep-rooted trust issues with people in general, but these are even more intense when it comes to men — doubly so when it comes to foster fathers. the fact that byan has the suspicion they they were initially only taken in as a publicity stunt certainly only fuels this distrust. he's definitely made some progress with them, but their guard remains up in his presence.

ㅤat first, byan didn't realize that xiao was keeping tabs on them. assuming he was overall uninterested in them and sure that they'd be out of the house and back in a group home in only a few months, they were surprised one day when he warned them against meddling too much with a particular group of people they had been harassing earlier. since then, they've been hyperaware of his efforts and try to trounce them at every corner out of spite — if he sends someone to tail them, they do their very best to lose this person by using their skill in parkour to their advantage. if he tries to track their phone, they turn it off or simply leave it at home. they also regularly check their clothes, bags, and shoes for any sort of tracking device he might try to slip into them.

ㅤdespite both above points, xiao is still the fun parent. byan likes that he doesn't usually try to put a stop to their delinquent behaviours and, in fact, seems to almost encourage them. that's something they've never had in a foster parent, and it's an surprising upheaval of their expectations in being brought into a wealthy household. for the most part, byan doesn't try to hide their petty crimes from xiao, even brags about some of the more exciting ones. they probably also get really enthusiastic telling him about whatever fight they got into on any given day. ...but only if they won. if they lost, he's not hearing about it despite it being obvious in the injuries they sustained.

ㅤbyan has definitely called xiao from a holding cell in a police station on at least one occasion. they know it's a riskier call since he might be too busy to answer, but between him and haru, calling xiao seems like the option that will lead to the shortest lecture. it's also the funnier option because they really enjoy the idea that they're damaging his public image if word of his foster kid being jailed gets out.

✧˚ㅤbonus headcanon!! because it's been rattling around in my brain for months

ㅤsix months in, byan still hasn't unpacked their things. a few items that see regular use have spread out across their room a little in the time they've been in the apartment, as well as the things they've acquired since moving in, but most of their belongings remain tucked away inside the couple of bags they showed up with. even as their relationships with both haru and xiao are growing, they're waiting for that other shoe to drop — they're waiting for that moment where they're finally deemed too difficult and sent back to the group home. less and less they find themself wanting that day to come, but they're anticipating it nonetheless. no matter how good things seem, it always happens eventually.

i've been dreaming about genshin a lot lately idk this game has possesed me or smth so i feel like i'm required to write this? Also DAMN im rusty with genshin characters so i apologise profusely for any ooc-ness

XIAO is confused. Why on earth are you wearing his clothes? He isn't opposed to it specifically, but doesn't understand the appeal or the reason why you do it. "My clothes don't fit you properly. What's the point?" he asks, completely straight faced. You smile. "It reminds me of you when you're not with me!" He just scoffs and says he doesn't get your strange habits before moving on with his day. Somehow though, the image of you in his clothes won't leave his mind for the rest of the day. "Dammit..." he mumbles under his breath, barely audible when nobody's around. Don't bring up his pink cheeks in the evening when he comes back to see you, he will not elaborate.

Similarly, NEUVILLETTE is also confused. This must be another human thing that he isn't familiar with. What does wearing their lover's clothes mean to humans? "Oh, I just missed you... your clothes remind me of you, you know?" You explained when he questioned you on the matter. "Oh, I suppose that makes sense. Do you want more items related to myself for when I am absent?" He asks. While you do want to know what items he would bring you, you turn him down. "I like your shirts the most, because they smell like you and feel like your hugs." He doesn't know why exactly, but he has the urge to kiss you all of a sudden.

WRIOTHESLEY feels distracted when he sees you in his clothes from time to time. He gets busy a lot, so the moments he gets to spend with you feel extra special. But, what is he to do when you look so positively yummy in his shirt? "Hey, mind taking my shirt off? It's... sort of distracting." he admits, taking a sip of his tea. "But, wouldn't it be even more distracting if I took it off now?" you asked, feigning an innocent look. He almost spit out his tea. "I did not mean it like that...! Surely you're just teasing me." You just smiled mischeviously in response, taking a sip out of your own cup. "That's what I thought. I know that look."

ZHONGLI thinks you look odd in his clothes. Odd, but not bad by any means. You actually look quite endearing. "I'll make sure to commit this to memory." he says calmly, sitting down next to you on the bed. "You say that every time you're with me." you poke his shoulder gently, smiling up at him. "That's because everything about you is worth remembering, I suppose." Still, he thinks this specific memory is one he will treasure for a long, long time. "Oh my..." you felt heat rushing to your cheeks at his words, hugging his arm. Actually, he changed his mind, you're positively adorable in his clothes.

You're basically asking to get attacked with a flurry of kisses if you wear ITTO'S clothes in front of him. That's like, a show of affection! That you're totally his and no one else's! And that also means it's a cause for celebration! "Agh, Itto- Stop!" you try and fail to push his face away. "Hehehe..." he gives you a bright smile and places a big ol' kiss on your lips. "You should wear my clothes more often!!!" he felt proud of himself, puffing out his chest. "Ummm, whatever you say..." you're kind of worried that if you do that, your face will never escape his lips.

The dinner table with the twins' family, where they speak of finding good friends, not falling in with the wrong lot. Li Tianchen, sat there, too late for him.

Liu Xiao engineering himself to be the "friend" of Li Tianchen, the one to be trusted, whilst making his friendship conditional. Using it as a means by which to hone his new tool.

Li Tianchen copying that when befriending Liu Min. Liu Min who was largely shunned by his family, the "weak" son, burying himself in online discourse and no real friendships to compare. Liu Min, who at first saw Li Tianchen as a tool, but by the end, a friend; a "friend" who killed him.
