I’m still in awe about this, but thanks to Ancestry.com, I now know the names of a few of my fourth great grandparents. All of these ancestors who were once nameless in my mind now have an identity and family names that I can honor. It’s a very moving experience; like meeting new grandparents for the first time. Random tidbit about me, I knew about this from my late grandpa, but my third great grandpa Genshiro was a 婿養子. Japanese have practiced adult adoption for centuries because it was one of the most brilliant ways to solve a problem that ancient patriarchal societies struggled with: finding male heirs to carry on the family name. 婿養子 or mukoyōshi were men who were adopted into a clan with only daughters and married to the eldest girl. This adopted son-in-law would take his wife’s family’s name and inherit her family’s fortune or business and would hopefully produce male heirs. Mukoyōshi were often second or third or fourth sons who could not inherit in their own family due to the fact they were not the eldest. This practice was popular up until the 20th century and still practiced throughout the 1800’s. It wasn’t until later that the practice began to be perceived in a negative light and viewed as emasculating. In my search or grandparents, I discovered that grandpa Genshiro’s father was also a 婿養子 who had discarded his surname “Watanabe” to become an “Omuro”. So, without any adult adoption taking place, my surname would be Watanabe and not Satō.
