Fact of the day:

Octopuses can edit their own genes!

Cephalopods like squids, cuttlefish, and octopuses are incredibly intelligent and wily creatures—so much so that they can rewrite the genetic information in their neurons. Instead of one gene coding for one protein, which is normally the case, a process called recoding lets one octopus gene produce multiple proteins.

First of all, unless you have an adoption lined up, you are not giving that child up for adoption, let’s not sugarcoat it. You are giving that child to the foster system with less than a 40% chance of being adopted before the age of five, if they are even adopted at all.

Second of all, pregnancy in the United States has a higher death rate than Covid. Also in the United States, 25% of known pregnancies end in miscarriage. That does not take into account miscarriages before 4 weeks (over a 50% chance of miscarriage) and after 20 weeks (no longer counts as a miscarriage medically speaking). The majority of pregnancies end in miscarriage.

Lastly, no matter what your opinion is, everyone has the right to choose what they do with their body. To force someone to give up their own body in order to give life to a child is unconstitutional. That’s not an opinion, that’s based on the fact that bodily autonomy is a constitutional right, given even to corpses. You cannot legally use someone’s body even to save someone’s life, that is why organs must be donated before they can be used to save lives. If you think women have less rights than corpses, that is your own problem. Stop overturning laws based on the constitutional rights of our country because of your own misogynistic opinions.

Things I wish I knew before starting medical school:

- prophylactic anti-depressants

- you don’t need an iPad

- PDF books are better than physical books

- how to take neat notes on word

- knowing people in the year above you is an advantage because they can give you their notes and tell you what came up in their exams

- it’s gonna take awhile to find out the best way to revise and that’s okay

- there will be people who act like they know everything but fail exams and there will be people who act stupid and get the highest scores

- some medical students have the AUDACITY

- you don’t need to study everyday to pass your exams

- you’re going to burn out extremely fast if you don’t balance your life

- everyone has their strengths and weaknesses, it’s okay to find some topics difficult

- just because you didn’t understand something today doesn’t mean you will never understand it

- just do what you can in the time that you have and that’s enough

- if you fail an exam or a station at some point that doesn’t mean you don’t deserve to be in medical school

- people’s study habits can be very questionable so just focus on yourself and don’t compare yourself to others

Y'all! I found some really cool info about a tortoise, and thought my fellow Tumblr users are going to find it as fascinating as I did :)

Fact of the day:

The oldest-known living land animal is a tortoise named Jonathan, who is currently 190 years old. He was born in 1832 and has lived on the island of St. Helena in the Atlantic Ocean since 1882. Jonathan is a Seychelles giant tortoise, a subspecies of the Aldabra giant tortoise!
