to begin this I'm not trying to be a hater and I'm especially not trying to be a hater of the queer media that we have been getting this summer/will be getting this fall because it is really important BUT it'd be great if the queer media we always talk about would more often be about sapphics

a writeblr intro!
Tumblr media
oops i’m posting it again... tumblr decided i wasn’t cool enough to actually show up in the tags, alas.
🌹 Liv/Olivia | she/he/they | 23 🌹
Hello 🎉! My name is Olivia (feel free to call me Liv)! I am a Black fantasy & romance author who focuses on themes of queer love & longing, sapphic intimacy, generational wounds & complicated familial relationships.
I also spend quite a bit of time creating digital art! A lot of it revolves around my WIPs these days, lol. You will certainly see art on this blog of my characters. Feel free to check out my art blog @lurrkingly, or my art twitter here.
I am always looking for more authors/writing advice blogs to follow! Fellow writers please feel free to interact! I follow, like, and reply from my main/personal blog, @girlfriend-champion :)
I am always open to ask and tag games!
I am tentatively open to critique partners–if we’re mutuals and we have similar reading/writing interests, please feel free to ask! <3
🌹 about my work 🌹
My writing tends to skew towards adult/emerging adult. I LOVE various flavors of fantasy (high, low, urban, action-adventure, Gothic). I like to spend time crafting intricate worlds (lore bibles are some of my favorite things to write) and magic systems.
My favorite works (to write and to read) all include some form of romance. I write romantic love and attraction between all genders, but ladies craving each other carnally is like music to me. LOL. So, some of my work features sexuality/intimacy, but this certainly varies widely from project to project (and I certainly will not be sharing this sort of content on tumblr, for reasons that should be obvious.lol).
I love to include elements of complex relationships in my writing–romantic, platonic, or familial. Human relationships are complicated and messy and awesome and frequently painful–and it’s important to me that my work reflects that.
I try particularly to explore in my work the lives and relationships of queer women of color (particularly Black & biracial women). I am always open to fantasy, romance, and sci-fi recs written by Black authors :)

I agree with my whole heart abt ur ff sex post !!! it's like if there isn't a dick in the equation the sex suddenly becomes lifeless and tame........ like PLEASE ...
i do think its a feminist issue in that i think women, and people socialized as women, are so systematically cut off from their desire and anatomy (my mom didnt know u dont pee out of the same hole until i told her….when she was like 45….) that we don’t want to and don’t know how to write sex focused on vaginas. even in leftist circles and sapphic circles it’s easy to project onto cis men tangentially, because if you have to write about pussies you have to think about what feels good, what’s sexy, and that runs into this wall that you put up so you don’t HAVE to think about these things. i am pushing through these walls primarily for mine and my partner’s enjoyment, and publishing it bc other people should get to enjoy it, too, although there are still some things i write that really are too personal, i.e., pretty much directly lifted from real life experience, but that falls into a different category of erotica than, say, writing lesbians having weird sex with swords because it’s fun for those characters and why would i write it as cis men if i could just not? we alll love calling cis men butch icons or whatever; why not actually DO that? anyway, women like humping and women like sucking and women like sweat and body hair too and i’m gonna write about it.
on a side note it is very unfortunate that english lacks sexy words for female anatomy. we literally don’t have a good word for wetness. it makes writing it very difficult from a technical standpoint which means i also get more burnt out. i’m taking a few days off and then i’ll be back to my zolusbian fucking nasty duties.

i am trying to read more about bi lesbianism bcuz i do want to understand but everything i have been able to find is like. bonkers transphobic??? everything ive found that isnt "i like girls extra so just bi doesnt work" is "trans men can be lesbians because of having a vagine" and it just. confuses me? many of these people seem to be saying lesboys exist which strong agree but so much seems to be focused on tme people and comes off like a weird progressive reskin of excluding trans women from sapphic spaces, and i KNOW thats not actually the core idea or meaning bcuz i have seen a lot of transfems identify with bi lesbianism!!! i just want to understand bcuz i truly believe ppl are functioning in good faith and genuine self identification and i am over trying to police anything or making my opinion on label functionality a problem like. ill never be cool with social media posts blowing up abt how Lesbians Fuck Men but otherwise personal labels i truly dont care and want to understand so im capable of approaching the subject in good faith and not ignorance, but i genuinely can't find anything that isn't bigotted*.
i know that online communities of bi lesbians arent to blame for things like sexual violence or anything and any bigotry espoused is problematic on its own right regardless of self identity, feel a need to say that explicitly because i have also noticed that as a talking point where people either victim blame Bad Lesbians for violence or it is assumed that the person is when asking about this
i am open to discourse and people chiming in on this post or sending asks if it is done in good faith because i cannot stress enough how much i am trying to approach this with an open mind and learn more, i just am like. not finding anything that isn't biphobic or transmisogynistic or reiterating people can do what they want, so if you have answers here that isnt that i would love that
*exception 2 split attraction model ppl or lesbians who fool around with men and use bisexual to describe sexual activity i get that but that doesnt seem to be a majority of people

6, 13, and 17 for da ask game . Dgs preferably if that’s ok!!
eheheh thank you for the ask 6 - what ship fans are the most annoying? ive spoken about this before but. baro//aso//ryuu girlies (gender neutral) can NOT stop putting their shit in the asoryuu tag and its so annoying. i am not in the asoryuu tag to read about Him gtfo.
13 - worst blorbofication Being more light-hearted, I dislike it when Ryuunosuke is given his 1-1 constant wide-eyed nerves and complete cluelessness post-canon. I've seen so many fics do this, especially within the context of asoryuu (im an asoryuu girlie through and through don't get me wrong) and it just feels like they've ignored all the great development that Ryuunosuke receives throughout the games. Also when BVZ is presented extremely sympathetically. I think he simultaneously has a lot more and less nuance than is often in fan content, but stuff that focuses on Nice-ifying him is worse imho.
17- there should be more of this type of fic/art Sapphic fics and art!!! Female-focused fics and art!! Especially of the adult women like Courtney, Evie, Lady B, Olive, etc. Of course it makes sense that the main weirdgirls get the most fandom focus but I would still like to see more of the adult women in fan content. Both for character development and Lesbian reasons.

would you mind explaining why you arent a battleaxe bi anymore? /gen
i just think exclusionists are unnecessarily mean and wasting their time building up all of that anger. i think we have bigger things to focus on. at the end of the day, pansexuals aren't hurting bisexuals as much as the power of the real world is.
i'm still critical of pansexuality's origins and the community's behavior sometimes, but like... it's unfair to make that judgement towards every individual.
it's not even just being anti-pan, really. i'm moving away from exclusionism as a whole. i'm finding my true identity and pride in labels that are frowned upon in such communities (i.e. aspec stuff). i'm also studying all perspectives and realizing that, actually, the more and more inclusive you go, the better argument you have, and my personal philosophy is that it's rooted in letting go of anger you don't need to have. i understand why exclusionists are angry, but i think they're misdirecting said anger towards their own kind and not our oppressors. yes queer is a slur, but it's definitely more widely-reclaimed than not and you can use it regularly while also respecting individual boundaries and knowing when to avoid using it in their personal spaces.
if i'm going to run a blog mostly focusing on bi+ topics, then it's only right to include all labels under the bi umbrella. after all, i totally agree with people who use multiple mspec labels at once, as if they function as more specific descriptors for their preferences (i.e. bi/pan, bi/omni, bi/poly - i myself am feeling a newfound connection to bi/omni). every book you'll read studying mspec sexuality includes these subcommunities and welcomes them with open arms. maybe some of these people do have internalized biphobia, but if they have a community that is technically the same thing identity-wise, so what?
and speaking of books, i think material reality and its physical sources of written history speak louder than random 14yo's carrds online. the books that promote bi revolutions? they're anti-lesbian-separatism. the more i look into it, the more i think it's harmful to bi women and realize nothing would have changed, positively or negatively, if it had never happened. radfems never would have had the power they do, lesbians would be much more accepting of mspec wlw participating in their own rightful culture, and pretty much all of this "lesbians vs. bi women" discourse wouldn't exist present-day. "lesbian" used to belong to us, and it was never supposed to be taken away from us in the first place. if there is no harm in bisexuality and other mspec communities existing in harmony, then there is no harm in mono and mspec lesbians existing in harmony, exactly as they did once before. lesbophobic invasive men are gonna be lesbophobic regardless of the label. i was actually reading a carrd last night that made a great argument, about how chronically-online lesbians always push for mspec lesbians to create their own label, when it should be the former who does so. lesbian was inclusive before it was exclusive and it was never supposed to be exclusive at any point in time. if lesbians can accept that bi women have a rightful access to butch/femme & dyke, then they should be able to understand where i'm getting. you can't take something from someone and then claim it was never theirs. it's literally immoral theft. so yeah, in case it wasn't obvious yet, i'm starting to lean radinclus to the point where i understand and find community with lesbianism. it just makes more and more sense as you delve deeper and deeper into what all sapphics have in common, as opposed to how we think of each other currently.
^^ i'm really scared to post that. i'm afraid of harassment before questions, but i promise you i have done so much more research on the topic than exclusionists have and could debunk pretty much any argument you (respectfully) throw my way. i'm afraid of getting called a lesbophobe by people who don't want to think differently and understand that the idea is different than what they imagine it is. if you must unfollow me then go ahead, but there is a reason i'm keeping this on the down-low. just because i'm confident enough that i'm right doesn't mean i'm confident others will be reasonable. but, there ya go, i've officially said it now. if anything, i really only plan on mentioning it on this blog (as opposed to the main purpose of @tribadeism as a sideblog of mine) for emphasizing posts regarding the history and/or relatability of sapphics, but i guess we'll see.
so, i used to be exclus-leaning, but i no longer am. i am now pro-mspec, pro-aspec, accept aces/aros who say they're queer, and am learning about and starting to lean towards radical inclusionism (with some critical thought to remain naturally, of course, don't worry - the lack of that ruins the credibility of any stance imo).

hey! what's this odyssey retelling that everyone is so heated about? no one is saying its name/the author's name in their posts or tags and i can't find it on google. thanks😅
the author's name is sarah underwood and i believe? the upcoming book's name? is "lies we sing to the sea" - it claims to be a "sapphic and feminist retelling of the odyssey."
idk how much you know but there was an interview a while back circulating (which has been since taken down so i can't link it) where she claimed that she hadn't read the whole source text (ie the odyssey) and ofc that got people upset because how can you claim to write a quality retelling if you don't even know the whole of the material? i mean, sure, you could argue that you only need to read the parts relevant to the retelling - but lets be honest: everything informs and connects to everything else. the context is important. everything is so inter-connected and holistic that i personally believe that to not read the whole source material when writing a retelling of it is foolish. i understand that the text can be daunting and a bit inaccessible, particularly if one doesn't have a background in classics or if one is using a verse/older translation. however there are multiple guides out there that help make it more easy to break into, plus audiobooks on youtube exist i believe! imo there is literally no excuse.
im pretty sure i rb'ed a post a while ago with screenshots from the interview but i can't find it on my blog now, so i don't think i tagged it :/ but if i remember correctly? she also admitted to reading and keeping up with what sells well, with the implication that she's writing in a similar style/genre simply in order to make money. n i mean - i get it! authors need to live too. but i personally found her easy admittance of this fact a bit of a suggestion that she doesn't really care about what she's writing, and simply wants to make money off it. the fact that she hasn't fully read the odyssey doesn't help her case. is she really passionate about this project? does she really care about what she's trying to say?
also as the previous post ive rb'ed states, there have been multiple stories as well as scholarship focusing on women in the odyssey and what underwood is doing is not completely original. which again - fine! very little these days is. but if youre gonna put something out into an already saturated market, shouldn't you want to put out your very best, your passion project, something that youre 100% proud and happy with? idk man but if i were her, id be nervous and feeling like i haven't done my best.
anyway, you didn't ask for commentary but you got it regardless. sorry to clog your dashes haha ive said my piece and am happy to just ignore the existence of underwood and her retelling from here on out.

This is a serious post but like, i used to be really lean and go to the gym alot (it was quite unhealthy cycle, had a unhealthy view on food and stuff ) but i got positive attention from it and during covid i developed a chronic disorder and had to do physical therapy and i cant work out properly/more intensely or lift heavy weights anymore but now i am alittle softer and actually eat enough but i am also more self-conscious with how i look.
However, being on sapphic tumblr and seeing people saying how they like soft tummys and stuff and it not being completely focused on the society standard of looking and more inclusive has made me feel better about myself and more attractive, i have a long way to go to be more comfortable with myself but i am getting there slowly 😁
BTW: i think women who are softer and of all different body types are beautiful and attractive! Just for some reason, when i am softer, i dont feel the same to myself and i should have more body confidence, this post isnt about pitting other bodies against each other, just how society and my own dismorphia has affect me and some things here that has helped alittle!

ヽ  ⁺  ˖   caroline forbes. written by mimi (she/her, 24) intertwined with @katarines & affiliated w @guarrds :3
Tumblr media
21+ only and low to sporadic activity . i prioritize my oc over at @bu11seye more than any canon character i write so please keep that in mind when activity comes and goes . trigger warnings for adult content , my whole blog is on an ask to tag basis . please do not follow if you have a long list of triggers . i have the memory of a squirrel and cannot remember everyone's triggers to be careful about when posting.
caroline was kidnapped and tortured many times during her eight season run and has severe ptsd from it . please be aware of that before initiating dark plots or anything of the sort . i do like dark content , and i'm making caroline's vampirism and her attraction to darkness amplified for plot reasons and to incorporate my love of horror into my portrayal , so dead dove do not eat warning for her feedings and some of her plots. she's a vampire , there will be gore , there will be beheadings , there will be violence , there will be some terrible character choices .
i do not recognize legacies as canon for my caroline , if i were to write caroline with children she would be an active mother , however i am picky with writing her outside seasons 1-3 of tvd . i am currently on a rewatch of the originals , so i am more than willing to place her there in new orleans but please be patient with me because i have not seen the originals since it first aired years ago.
katherine and caroline's maker/sire dynamic is very important to my portrayal of caroline . similar to eric and pam of true blood where she can feel when katherine is around or if she is alive . there's a part of her that loves and hates katherine at the same time , so please be aware of that in advance .
i am multiship and multifandom, caroline can be placed anywhere . my caroline is also sapphic , and very loud about her attraction to both men and women. please ship with caroline and love on her ! the only ship i am not open to romantically exploring is with stefan unless muns really click . do not force a ship on me , just because it's canon in the show does not mean our muses are automatically romantic ! i will be more selective with romantic shipping caroline for that reason , but all platonic ships are fair game !
to go off of my last point : i am a forwood and klaroline centered blog for her romances . there will be a lot of reblogs consisting of both ships . i love forwood and klaroline so , so much so if either one of those ships bother you in any way , i would not suggest following . i am anti steroline , anti mattoline, and am very vocal about how much i dislike the way both stefan and matt treat her romantically . my ideal endgames for caroline are tyler and klaus if we are doing show related threads . i will just pretend that steroline never happened even if we are doing post/during series interactions.
formatting is not an issue for me but i barely format anything on here . my blog is writing focused and if you're not going to write do not follow me . i like long responses and most of the time one liners annoy me unless it's for a starter or something to get a dynamic going . i'm iconless but i love using gifs .
dni if you're not going to give the same energy as me when plotting , if your character stutters through text , or write in any point of view than third for 90% of your posts .
Tumblr media
canon divergencies
caroline's relationship with damon was cut short after the first few interactions with him. she does not get abused long term by him at all . caroline gets into a relationship with katherine as a human, and keeps it secret from her friends because she's scared of coming out of the closet . caroline knows katherine as katrina, so all mentions of the name katrina is just katherine . picture of caroline gushing about katrina while elena's scared of katherine . but of course all things come to an end when katherine kills caroline, turning her into a vampire . the rest of her story goes along with canon up until the end of season three .
caroline can tell the difference between katherine and elena immediately .
caroline does not have children , my portrayal has her leaving mystic falls and traveling the world .
her love for her friends is still above all . her friendship with bonnie and elena mean the world to her as do the rest of her platonic friends . she checks in on them a lot , and checks in with their children and family line as caroline out lives them .
caroline is closer to bonnie than elena , she spent most of her time at bonnie's house growing up so she considers bonnie to be her sister .
she has a goldendoodle named moose . moose is caroline's therapy dog for her ptsd .

Sapphic underground made a YouTube post about the pressure put on lesbians to be "inclusive" of males and opposite sex attracted people and the toll it's been taking in our community, and to my great surprise, the majority of the comments on that post are supportive! There's even bi and straight women and gay men showing some love. It's just so nice to see actual lesbian expressing their mind and not getting immediately silenced 🥰
Wow, so I've looked it up and I think you refer to this comment, there is indeed a lot of likes under it !
Tumblr media
I am a total fan of Sapphic Underground's channel, I posted one of her videos not as far as a few days ago but I cannot say I thought she would ever address this huge problem targetting our community. This goes to to show we are not making this up, being lesbians that would somehow invent a problem that so many people pretend is not there. I don't think she's super known on the internet, especially by those 2.0 lesbophobes who, let's be honest, generally really don't care about actual lesbian content despite trying their best to be like us, but they still can try to bully her out of her platform the second they all collectively find her to be a bad woman. It wouldn't be the first time. So because of that I think it's important to support her, that comment is brave. I'm glad she got so many likes there, I'm sure it was a positive sign for her to see we are a lot to think just like this and that she did well in speaking up. 👏
We cannot let non-lesbians dicktate to us what our words mean, what makes a lesbian a lesbian, how bigoted we are for not liking penises, how we are doing the worst of the worst for having this sexual orientation (being a lesbian, also known as being a homosexual girl/woman), how we should have our dating apps and in real life lesbian only spaces open to trans women (therefore males, a sex we will never be into) and thus ruining said spaces because even the kindest most gullible lesbians will get tired at some point and leave, seeing the most basic men use that as an excuse to also come in and make these spaces even more unsafe/ simply not lesbian spaces anymore, all of this is something we cannot ignore and so it makes sense she is talking about it. Being a lesbian Youtuber and video artist who focuses on making fun upbeat or poetic lesbian content doesn't make her blind to the modern western lesbian experience, this is pretty good to know ! So thank you for that message anon, more of the followers of this blog may open their eyes to this reality, since it's silenced, made invisible and gaslighted so often.
Why isn't lesbophobia taken any seriously while transphobia is nearly always considered with upper seriousness in lgbt spaces at large ? is the question we should all ask ourselves. It's not treason to think about it, to ask questions, to choose to prioritise our community, lesbians, after realising how much we've been made to suffocate and feel like second class citizens among people supposed to support and uplift us, not the other way round. More and more lesbians will speak out, because the anger keeps growing and nobody can successfully silence us, even if it cost us a platform, popularity, money, anything, we also have things to gain when finally speaking out. Defending lesbians, our reality, our history, our community, will always be a priority. ✨

you know, everyday I am in this fandom and everyday I notice how mlm and wlw ships are not given the same treatment at all.
people were SO QUICK to drop eskam after Irene said that (and I'm absolutely not excusing it, whether she apologized or not it was wrong) saying it's a problematic show and it sucks and we shouldn't watch it anymore.
1) Irene isn't the show itself, there are plenty of problematic actors in other remakes but this was never a reason to drop them for these same people.
2) while eskam has absolutely some problematic elements (whitewashing Yousef, making Cris skinny, a good part if not all season 4, not many race and body diversity etc) that we absolutely need to call out, they also were one of most revolutionary remakes for a reason (making Isak a girl, focusing on women, giving a pov to all the girls, calling out the toxicity of noorhelm and making a season about abusive relationships)
the same people who refused to watch eskam after that are often the same ones who watched wtfock and skamit and constantly make content about it (and by content I mean Sobbe and Nicotino only stuff)
it's so clear that they just wanted an excuse to not watch the wlw season and the anti Noorhelm season and drop eskam so they could ignore the sapphics and the actually good message and have a "good" reason why.
and it's not all about Crisana because even Kietou and Mayla aren't afforded that same grace.
after the whole "it was just a kiss, nothing more" thing people were so quick to compare Kieu My to Tiffany Prigent and William???
and while I do see a lot of love for Kietou I mainly follow skam blogs who's users are other wlw (like you, which btw.. I love your blog) so it's clear they enjoy having this rep.
but the same people who hyped Matteo and Davenzi? hello? were are they? because they weren't there for Fatou's season but suddenly they were there for Ismail's when they found out their LI was a cis skinny white abled boy.
and then they refuse to even watch Lola's season but then will not stop talking about Lucas's season.. I see all of them, and how they claim to care about gay Rep but said rep is cis white skinny abled mlm only.
i could write a whole entire essay about the mistreatment of wlw ships in this fandom for real
like not only do so many people refuse to watch eskam which, fine, after that horribly insensitive selfie irene posted a few months after s2 aired i can't even really blame anyone, but even before that while the season was airing so many people called crisana toxic because of their fight and how cris called joana crazy, and tbh yeah, as someone with bpd i would also criticize that moment and i do think it was a choice(tm) and not one of eskam's finer moments but the same people will still support s*bbe despite robbe calling sander a literal slur?? and also, i mean y'all know i love them, but having matteo shout at david in their reunion was also a choice, but all the mlm evaks get excused and are still perfect soulmates but crisana is toxic, give me a break (though tbf davenzi definitely also often gets more criticism that other white cis mlm evaks but i digress)
same goes for what you mentioned with the "it was just a stupid kiss" comment, idk if it's everyone being way more personally involved when it comes to wlw ships or what but that comment was absolutely unproblematic and just petty teen behavior yet people reacted as if, like r*bbe, kieu my had called fatou a slur, or as if she bullied fatou
i've said it before, i will defend the three wlw seasons no matter what, i have issues with all three and my personal attachment and love are quite different towards each of them but representation matters and it's so sad to see how people willfully ruin these seasons for wlw fans and not support and even trash them more than any other season, it's like wlw seasons need to be flawless to be considered even passable while mlm and other seasons get a pass for literally high-key offensive stuff like slurs, racism, sexism etc.
(and thank you for saying you love my blog 💜)

Why do some people ship raydia? I don't want to be disrespectful and I have nothing against the people who ship them, but I don't understand why there are people who ship them, most of their interactions on the show are negative and part of that I don't think their personalities fit particularly well together, the only reason I can see to ship them is that Claudia said Rayla's braid was cute.
So I started typing out a longer reply to this and accidentally closed the window, so we’re gonna do a spark notes edition of it to the best of my ability. Quick disclaimer: I can see / do ship Raydia on Claudia’s side post-hypothetical redemption, but having it requited on Rayla’s side makes me feel personally uncomfortable. So I 0.5 ship it, I suppose?
If anyone who does fully ship it (or ships it on Rayla’s side; I think tht would be fascinating as it’s the opposite to where I sit) or thinks I’ve missed something / gotten something wrong, please let me know / feel free to weigh in! These are just my best guestimates from a somewhat outside perspective.
3 Main Reasons People Ship Raydia (as far as I can tell):
#1) It’s Gay.
As a queer person, I’ve never understood or shipped like this, but as always, personal preference rules all. I did briefly consider the ship pre-s1, but was still initially put off bc it was the biggest ship in the fandom at the time, and a lot of the content then boiled down to “Omg we’re girls who are gay uwu” and that’s just... never been enough to sell me on a ship. I prefer focusing on a strong story and racial rep > queer rep in the media I consume, with queer rep being a bonus. That being said, pre-show, I did get the appeal: around the same age, Rayla was always my favourite, I don’t mind enemies to friends to lovers when it’s well done, and they had nice complementary character designs. (I’ll talk about why canon killed it for me as a ship later).
I also totally get reading personal experiences, particularly queer ones, onto characters when I feel like it adds a deeper layer to how I’m interpreting them, i.e. aspec headcanons for Rayllum, or sapphic headcanons for Claudia. I do both and they do contribute to my understanding of the character, but with Rayla, I just don’t personally think about the gender of her partner as something that Matters in terms of adding any sort of understanding I personally have of her character. But I also don’t tend to think about gender in general (it’s my pan, agenderness showing) in my ships, like, ever? Some people - particularly lesbians and queer people/women - always go for femslash or gay shipping in their fandom for one reason or another, and pre-Janai/Amaya, Raydia was the only option. (See also: people shipping Soren/Runaan before ages were revealed for similar “It’s Gay enemies to lovers” reasons before backpedaling super hard.)
But yeah, this was one of the early reasons, and I like to think it’s not the only one.
#2) They don’t ship either of them with Callum.
Now, I’m the opposite of this, as I ship both of them with Callum in different ways and different intervals, but I do generally lean towards Callum/Claudia staying Friends > romance longterm in order for them to feel fulfilled as individuals. I’ve also spoken pretty extensively before about the value in Platonic Rayllum (and queerplatonic Rayllum), so while I’ve shipped them from the very start, I do understand why some people genuinely prefer them or would’ve preferred for them to stay friends rather than friends and lovers. I will admit I can’t think of any reason, personality wise, to think that Callum and Rayla don’t mesh as partners (whereas I can do the same for Rayla/Claudia and Callum/Claudia) but again, if anyone wants to chime in, I am happy / open to hearing it.
#3) Claudia’s redemption arc
This was the second or biggest appeal, I think, and what eventually made me ship it on Claudia’s end. A lot of people after s1 fell in love with Claudia’s goofy, sweeter side that s2 showed a lot more cracks in, and they wanted that nicer side to be brought to the forefront. Hence why the “cute braid though” was fixated on and Claudia’s “vile bloodthirsty elven assassin” was ignored. They wanted Claudia to see the error of her father’s ways and grow to be a happier, healthier person, and saw Rayla as the avenue of that arc happening. I definitely saw sentiments of people wanting Rayla to “save” Claudia from Viren’s manipulation.
Another quick disclaimer: I don’t think characters having majority of negative interactions is a reason to not ship them (i.e. I shipped Janai/Amaya in S2, and I also ship Azula/Aang from ATLA), because shipping can be a lot about the potential of the characters. For Azula/Aang, decades post-war, the main draw of the ship is the work Azula would have to do to even get there in terms of having feelings. However, I’m not a fan of one character being the one who gets another character to a place where they’re Healthy, especially if there’s repeated onesided brutality and dehumanization consistently on the way there.
AKA while I do enjoy the thought of Claudia catching feelings for Rayla post her redemption, I don’t like the idea of Rayla having anything to do with getting Claudia there. The closest I’ve come is my fic “if heaven and hell decide,” where by virtue of being around each other, Rayla slowly chips away at Claudia’s prejudices, but Rayla doesn’t save her from them, and Rayla has no interest in doing so. It’s not Rayla’s Problem to fix that Claudia repeatedly dehumanizes her, in fic and in canon all throughout s1 and s2.
Rayla is a very compassionate and forgiving person at her core, but she also does have a lot of self-respect, and is very blunt when it comes to how people treat her, especially when she feels like they’re in the wrong for it. (When she doesn’t, like the Silvergrove, that’s another matter entirely.) ie. holding Callum accountable for hurting her feelings (unintentionally) in 1x04, “Enough almost killing me,” in 1x05, her general mistrust towards Soren and Claudia in S2, how pissed she gets at Callum for doing dark magic even one time to save her and a dragon (which was her original goal). So yeah, Claudia would definitely have to not be a dark mage for Rayla to willingly give her the time of day, remotely, to start with, and Claudia, even as of s1 (as I always liked and saw her more disturbing side present in that season) is a Very Long ways from.
Again, I can see the appeal of Claudia liking Rayla post-redemption arc. It means the redemption arc happens, she lets go of her father and comes back to her brother, she realizes her father is wrong, she stops being a dark mage, and would become a happier healthier person. The concept of Raydia on Claudia’s side is full of nothing but positives. (We’ll talk more personality wise down below). What I struggle with, and what I’ve done my best to drum up, is what Rayla gains from a relationship with Claudia, on a conceptual level.
If you had a Rayla who was never friends with the boys, you could posit she’d learn humans weren’t all bad - but that’s what she learns, incredibly quickly, from the boys in the span of 1-3 episodes. Not the seasons long arc Claudia would need to realize elves are People that three seasons hasn’t already accomplished. So that route is out. You could also have Rayla realizing dark magic isn’t all ‘Bad,’ but given her response to s2 and that she’s closer to being spell parts than most of the main cast, I think that’s highly unlikely and even detrimental to her character, so that’s out. You could argue Rayla would get the neat conceptual understanding of someone who was also told to do terrible things by a parent they wanted to please, and the path of atonement when you break away from that... But again, it’s not anything that Rayla can’t already get from her canonical friendship with Soren.
Conceptually, Rayla needs to learn that fear/emotions are not weakness and that humans aren’t bad. Rather than continue the cycle of violence, she wants to break it. She accomplishes these things through her relationship with Ezran and Callum, by being emotionally open with them, seeing their kindness, and them helping / inspiring her to end the Cycle: “But you saw he was a person, just like you” / “Who told you that?” “You did.” Post-S3 and “Through the Moon,” Rayla needs to learn to not give into her fear and that her life has value. But Claudia, entering the way she does in the show with the worldview she does, can’t provide any of what she needed to learn in the first arc of the show, and will likely view Rayla as spell parts or an enemy for s4 (and possibly s5), which is the opposite of Valuing Rayla’s life.
So conceptually, on Rayla’s side, I can’t think of anything Unique Claudia would bring to the table, but I may not be not seeing something. Again, please point it out!
Why would the ship work personality wise?
This might feel a lil redundant, but there are similarities Claudia shares with Callum: intelligence, love of magic, resourcefulness, goofy nature that Rayla all appreciates in Callum. Rayla could even appreciate the way that Claudia tends to be very Prepared for things, as Callum is a bit more spontaneous and Rayla also likes to have a gist of things in mind. Assuming a redemption arc wouldn’t get rid of all of Claudia’s passivity, Rayla could also appreciate a partner who waits her out when it comes to opening up whereas Callum tends to nudge more, if Rayla is at a stage where she doesn’t need the nudging anymore.
It’s harder here to say what Claudia would appreciate about Rayla, as I don’t think her physicality or morality would be there and those are two of the most important things about her (that Callum arguably appreciates the most), but I could bet on forgiveness and compassion, as I’ve previously alluded to, that would also be necessary for her and Claudia to even be together.
I also want to take a second to talk about core wounds and patterns. Rayla responds to grief by being Actively a Protector, which usually amounts to Leaving First so she can’t be left. Claudia responds to grief/loss by passivity and Inaction, Preferring to Be Abandoned rather than abandon someone else. Again, who knows how much a redemption arc or more growth would change these patterns, but currently we’re looking at a situation that would turn into: Rayla is afraid, Rayla runs, this reaffirms Claudia’s own negative pattern, and she just shuts down and lets Rayla ‘choose’ for both of them no questions asked, leaving both girls to flounder.
Other Notes:
Sometimes, people ship things just because they’re cute. Or because they’re interested in the potential of the pairing rather than what it currently is.
Meta with a section where I talk more about Claudia and Rayla from a personality standpoint here. Meta about Claudia and Rayla’s relationship in general including some foil stuff here (although I do want to do a full foil breakdown for them sometime soon), in case anyone is interested in reading more about these two.

Why do I write primarily mlm fanfic?
This was something I asked myself the other day. I am a girl, I think I'm queer (but I am attracted to men, whatever I am), so why do I fixate on mlm relationships? Why do I never feel compelled to write wlw or even just some good 'ol straight stuff? I brought this up to a few friends of mine who also watch anime. One of them said that it’s because lots of popular media only really focuses on developing their male characters well, and I think this to be a very suitable explanation (as well as the fact that I’m queer and thus gravitate towards queer stories).
Take Sk8 the Infinity for example. I could count the number of female characters in this anime on one hand, and one of them is a robot. The others are supporting roles who only serve to support the male main characters. I love Sk8 very much, and with the possibility of a 2nd season I’d love to see a prominent, well-developed female character (but if they make her Reki’s love interest I will literally stab someone). But as the anime stands right now, there are no female characters that aren't just basically plot devices.
Another show I love dearly, Yuri!!! on Ice, is much the same. While there can be more of an argument made here because 1) competitive figure skating is split up between men and women, and 2) I believe that the story Yuuri and Victor is absolutely meant to be a romance, so having the two men as the focus is somewhat necessary, there's an overwhelming lack of fleshed-out women in the story. All the female characters are supporting members that only exist for the benefit of male characters. Yuuko and Minako support Yuuri, Lilia exists so Yuri P. can improve, Mila is just... kind of there, and Sara's whole character is centered around her brother being overprotective of her.
Okay, so let's look at something a little less... fruity. Horimiya. I've only watched the anime, so if there's stuff I miss from not having read the manga (yet), please forgive me. I still think this is a valid perspective, though, because if there's female development that the creators decided was so unimportant that it could be cut, that still supports my point here. In my opinion, Miyamura is a lot more developed than Hori. He has his tragic backstory of being a loner, and having his secret piercings and tattoos and all that. A lot of the story ends up focusing on his side of things... despite the fact that Hori is the protagonist. The story follows her perspective for the most part, we learn things about Miyamura as she does, yet I feel like she's a bit dull. She has a uncommon home life and has to take care of her younger brother, that's her big bad secret? I get that it's kind of unexpected since she's the pretty, perfect, popular girl, but I still feel like it's a tad anticlimactic. It's hardly ever addressed beyond the first few episodes, too, and it just kind of exists as a fact within the story. Even beyond our main couple, it seems like the other female characters development and stories are all focused on the boy they're interested in (except for Sawada, but she's there for like a couple of episodes and then doesn't really show up all that much again... and her crush on Hori is handled really weird, I didn't exactly love it). Remi's entire character is pretty much centered around her boyfriend, and Sakura and Yuki are basically competing for Toru. Meanwhile, the guys have story beats themed around the girls they're interested in, but I feel like it's not as obsessive or dramatic as how the girls are depicted.
So, we're given these female characters, who are really watered-down and honestly kind of boring, and we're not super compelled to write about them. When we are given flat female characters, there's nothing to work with. It's more fun to use the characters who have had development and play around with the "what ifs" and our own personal headcannons. The characters who get this special treatment are primarily male. And while I commend a lot of shows for developing their male characters in such a way that doesn't exactly fit with society's idea of masculinity (ex: Reki's insecurities and depression, Yuuri's anxiety and femininity, Miyamura's isolation and depression), in the end these characters are still boys, men, males.
I also think mlm is so prominent because of both straight girls and queer people. For straight girls, it can often be fetishization (forgive my generalizing, I'm sure not all straight girls are like that, but an overwhelming amount definitely are). I think one of the best examples I can give for this is Phan. This is a bit different since it's not anime, but instead real people, but if anything that really drives home the point even more. The way Dan and Phil were (and probably still are) treated in the fandom internet space is disturbing, to say the least. Their audience, while much of it was queer, was also made up of an overwhelming amount of heterosexual girls who not only shipped them intensely, but also often sexualized them. And look, there's nothing inherently wrong with being a straight girl and writing smut, but it gets to a point where it can be kind of weird if its excessive. Like, if that's all the relationship is really about, and if the people you're writing about are real human beings, that's definitely overstepping. I will admit that I had a Wattpad and that I wrote Phanfic way back when, and this is something I'm not exactly proud of. Granted, I did not write anything explicit, it was still super weird, whether or not I was queer. And I'm not saying all the problematic aspects of the Phandom were because of straight girls, because what I contributed was arguably problematic, and I did not identify as straight at the time. At the same time, though, there were straight girls who wrote exclusively smut (or "lemons" as they might've been referred to at the time). There were those who analyzed every post, every bit of information they could find about these men on the internet. They obsessed over the fact that they occasionally shared clothes (which is fairly common for roomates of similar sizes to do), and gathered evidence to support the theory that they shared a bed. It was bad. It was invasive, and it got to the point where it wasn't about the people, it was about the fetishized fantasy these girls made up in their heads about these real, actual men.
Dan and Phil's online presence kind of disappeared for a few years... and I don't blame them.
Getting back on track, mlm is prominent for queer people because it's the LGBT representation they so desperately want to see actualized in media. If a show doesn't make their favorite queer ship canon (and they often don't), they'll do it themselves! That's what fanfic is for! I also know that queer people project onto these characters a lot, and that writing about them is almost like a form of therapy. They see these characters as queer, and they see themselves in these characters, so they write about these characters experiencing similar emotions to them. The thing is, the most compelling characters are male, so those are the characters they end up focusing on, even if the person in question is strictly sapphic. My best example is how I project onto Reki. Personally, I end up thinking of him as (and thus end up writing him as) having some internalized homophobia around being bisexual. That's literally what I am currently going through. I can't project this onto any of the female characters in Sk8, because I couldn't see them going through this experience because they're not developed enough to.
Despite all of this, I still enjoy all of the shows I mention a lot. I think it's just an interesting topic that I was thinking about. I'm not trying to bash anything that I used as an example, these were just my personal observations based off of what I know about these shows and their fandoms. I do, though, believe shipping real people isn't super cool, and I stand by that as someone who used to do it. I'm not going to stop you... I just think it's intrusive and inappropriate to pretend like you know enough about influencers to dictate who they should be involved with romantically. Their love life is, frankly, none of your damn business.
So, long story short, we should make anime (and popular media in general) less misogynistic.
(Also, please leave Dan and Phil alone, they deserve privacy)
