I know many of you don't read my long posts so here are my greatest recent Byler-canon comforts:

1. Lies, when revealed (especially when they directly influence the plot of the person lied to), have to affect the person lied to. Acceptance is a neutral response and therefore the only effects it can have on Mike are homo(phobic) or homo(sexual). (But homophobic wouldn't have impacted his actions and...well it isn't that one)

2. The nature of the tragedy of self-sabotage is that things would have gone differently had the character not self-sabotaged. Tragedy lies in the "what if". For season 4 to be a romantic tragedy for Will (which it canonically is even if the whole show isn't), there has to be a "what if"/"if only": if only Will hadn't lied, Mike would have reciprocated.

If these aren't true, the plot is pointless because it affects nothing if removed: Mike doesn't love Will? Then they wouldn't have ended up together whether Will told him or not. Mike doesn't love Will? Then he would have told El he loved her without the prompting of "you're the heart" and the painting from El. <- that is bad writing, and I trust the Duffers know better than that. They've demonstrated better in the past.

Desolation

They were the ones that picked up their arms and their legs and carried on. And it’s a good job they did, because there was no one else left.

The oldest living human in the universe, and the oldest dead human in the universe, stranded together on an orange cliffside, overlooking a magenta ocean.

It wasn’t their first choice of real estate, but being the only survivors of the crash meant they didn’t have much of a choice. They could only drag their salvaged materials so far, after all. So they settled in for the long haul, and used their scraps and some white wood from a distant forest to build their home atop the great orange cliff. 

There wasn’t anything they could really...do, about the wreckage of the Red Dwarf. Neither of them could swim to it, obviously, and there was something about the local ocean water that made Lister kind of itchy, anyway. So they left it alone, as a great, big reminder of everything, and everyone, they’d lost.

Sometimes pieces would break off, sometimes other pieces would wash ashore, and sometimes, those pieces would even be useful. Sometimes Lister, bleeding heart that he was, would just walk outside of their house, stare into the horizon, and weep.

Bloody tosser, Rimmer would think, with tears in his hologramatic eyes.

There’s a special kind of loneliness, being the only life you know of on a planet. It’s not the kind of loneliness when you’re in the corner of a party and no one will speak with you, oh no. It’s more like when you’re in the corner of a party and no one is speaking to you but all the people who aren’t speaking to you are at least a million light years away, and your only way to even have a hope of a drink thrown in your face is half-submerged in this strange pink ocean, hazy in the distance.

Ah well. They were probably a bunch of smegheads anyway.

But they carried on, with the slow acceptance that they were well and truly lost. No enemies, sure, but also no friends—except each other.

And then, erm. Perhaps a bit more than friends, actually. Not sure when that happened, honestly, but who was left to judge? That’s right, no one, so mind your business, please.

They would often look to the sky. The sky, color of fresh mango juice. The rings that surrounded the planet always bisecting the vast expanse, creating some truly interesting sunsets that Dave was always LOOKING THE OTHER WAY FOR, COME ON-

Oh, they had their moments. But neither of them would ever be the same. They walked slower, lived slower, sat quieter. They had both existed since three million years in the past, and something deep in their cellular DNA seemed to know it. Imagine if you were three million years old and got launched into a new planet that seemed to only have plants on it, and see how you fare, eh? You’d have to become a vegetarian.

And when they succumbed to the cold orange earth, and their house fell into disrepair, and every broken and rusted piece of the Red Dwarf had succumbed to the sands of time...the microbes that had set up shop in Lister’s dead bones had evolved to the point of arguing with each other over whether there was a God or not.

Wish I could tell you, dear reader, that their conception of religion was based on dear old Arnie and Davey, but it wasn’t. They lived on this planet, and died on this planet, without anything of sentience to even know their names. Both of them were well and truly forgotten, and there’s no coming back from that.

But hey. They had still mattered.

far more compelling for me than the fact that narrators can time-travel is the reason WHY narrators can time-travel. in-universe acknowledgement of "nothing in their universe exists outside of the things that are 'on mic'". if it isn't in an episode, it didn't actually happen. that's an actual rule that exists in the story. it has been canonized.

the stamatis's parents never spent a second alive. gemma and charlotte never actually had their wedding. every single character has only existed as far back as their flashbacks can throw them. and that's IF they have flashbacks! flashbacks are not common! leon dragging michael out of the bar didn't get a flashback, so it didn't happen! like not in just the implicit way that applies to all characters in all stories, that's an in-universe rule!

but what's really getting me is this:

greater boston starts with leon killing himself. it starts because he kills himself. the foundation of the story is leon's death on the roller coaster. that's why everything else happens. leon's death makes something in their strange world into a story worth telling. the story is the only medium through which their world is allowed to exist.

leon's death is what brought their world into existence.

or, fun reversal, the world was created SO leon could die in it, which would then create a story intriguing enough to justify the existence of the rest of the world.

Codex: Mythical Fjord, King of Mythland

One of the few rulers of Mythland to ever be excommunicated, King Fjord was a power-hungry man. He remained at war for two thirds of his rule, a period referred to as the Fjordan Wars.

King Fjord first decided to reestablish rule over some of the outer edges of Mythland, which had fallen out of strict accordance with Mythland’s laws. The locals did not take kindly to this, resulting in almost a year of civil war, the King successfully crushed all rebellion.

King Fjord, immediately after, set onto taking the Codland islands, expecting no formidable resistance.

However, the Codlands stood strong for two years, eventually receiving strong military help from Pixandria, their combined might allowing them to take the upper peninsula of Mythland. Before they could take more, King Fjord sent a team of diplomats to negotiate terms of surrender.

The area surrounding much of the Malacus Lakes, now known as Gilded Helianthia, had been practically bled dry during this long period of warring.

The area declared their secession from Mythland and demanded to be recognized as their own country, stopping all agricultural trade until this had been done. After months of negotiating and small skirmishes, Mythland relinquished the Malacus Lakes and recognized Gilded Helianthia as its own, separate country.

During these times, King Fjord had come into repeated conflict with both the Craftman’s Guild and the Merchant’s Guild, eventually banning the the latter from Mythland entirely.

His youngest child, Mythic Oleander attempted to assassinate him and was promptly executed. The Crown Princess Onyx took this opportunity to rally the nobility, even getting the support of the King’s Council.

With few allies and little power after exhausting his resources for his wars, the pressure forced King Fjord to step down from the throne and the Crown Princess was named Queen Onyx of Mythland.

By all reports, he died of natural causes on the edge of Mythland but a few months later. Queen Onyx successfully pushed for his Mythical status to be revoked shortly after his death.

Hi, I am an assiant in TV drama and am a big fan of your work.

I've worked on productions where the writers have been kind of switched off once production starts (or kicked off the project) and ones where the writers are full on EPs, so my question is where do you like to be on this scale? How much overall control do you prefer to have?

(Also sorry to hear about your agent Jenne, she was lovely)

It depends a lot on the project. There are things I've written that I was certain would only get made in a way that resembled what I had in my head if I was there and actually showrunning (like Good Omens, especially Season 1). There are things I was content to take a step back from because I knew that the people making it knew what they were doing. (I haven't been as hands on on Sandman Season 2 as I was Season 1 because I am comfortable that they know what they are doing, and everything that comes in reassures me that I made the right decision.) There are the things you write and wish you were part of the decision making process. There are things you write and know that they aren't yours any more and then get very happy when you see them on the screen (there are three scenes scattered through the eight episodes of Dead Boy Detectives that I wrote, in each case because showrunner Steve Yockey asked me to, and I was thrilled with what they did with each of them.)

Finally, in one of the photos I noticed that in the background there is a footbridge that I saw a photo of a similar footbridge while searching on a history of Wey Navigation river on the UK National Trust page and fortunately the previous mentioned facebook page knew where it was, WAHOO! :))

Scene: The Hogback Wood where The Them play, seen in several episodes.

The World Word II crater they shot the main scene at should be in the west-south tip of the park. The whole path there and back is 4km (2,5 miles).

Tadfield Air Base (S01E05, S01E06) - RAF Upper Heyford, Bicester

Scene: For the shooting of the Tadfield Air Base the former RAF Upper Heyford was used, by the examining the google maps and screenshots from the series I think that the area labeled as 'Shelter 9' was used.

Availability (as of 2024): The place is no longer used by RAF purposes, there are several companies that use certain areas it but it is not available for public. The apple tree in the Garden of Eden (S01E01) - Waterfall Valley (formerly Cascade Country Manor), Paarl

There were other scenes also filmed at South Africa (thought not specified exactly where): Hell was filmed in Cape Town in a former abattoir. The Noah’s Ark scene and the Crucifixion scene were filmed on a windswept plain just outside Cape Town. Also the Meggido scenes. The entire village used for the scene with War causing mayhem in an african village is in fact a set, built on scrubland over a sand mine just outside Cape Town. The French Revolution scene wa shot on a set that had been used twenty-four hours earlier for the scene in Ancient Rome. Famine visiting a burger place with Elvis was shot on a set in Cape Town. Also some scene's in Anathema's cottage with Anathema and Newt.

SEASON 2

Most of season 2 has been shot inside the film studio in Bathgate (f.e. the whole Soho has been built there), the Hell in S2 has been shot in an old disused factory (not specififed which one). The shots of the Edinburgh castle have been shot from the top of the The Caledonian hotel.
