AITA for being friends with someone my roommate didnt like?

ok this might be long but here we go. Last semester I had a roommate who I liked pretty well, and we had a mutual friend, H. At some point, roomie got mad at h because h had apparently outed someone as schizophrenic.

Eventually, roomie started to move out of our room without telling me. Somewhere towards the beginning of this, a mutual friend? of ours made a joke about them looking for a new roommate. I asked why their books were all packed up, they told me it was because they'd be taking them home for thanksgiving. I thought ok, sounds like a lie, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. I truly had no idea why they would be moving out. I gradually went a little crazy watching them sleep in another room and pack all their stuff up, all the while saying nothing to me about it. I finally asked them about it, and they told me yes, they were moving out. Problem is though I think they might've been upset about something already when I asked about it? But they said they were fine so I accepted that as the truth. Again, I dunno. I think I was rude during this interaction but sadly can't remember anything I said besides yelling maybe the start of a sentence and then cutting myself off.

They moved out the next morning. I offered to help, they asked me not to. I was really upset and, stupidly, decided to take it up with them. That evening when I asked if we could talk, they openly rolled their eyes at me. I know it's stupid and probably the most asshole-y thing in this ask, but that drove me crazy. I said some shit, I don't remember what, but part of it was that I was "disappointed" in them. I don't know what that was supposed to be but it was NOT what I wanted to say. They, understandably, were really mad. I left and, too soon, texted them an apology. They replied, not rudely, telling me they don't want any contact with me, but also said, and I'll paraphrase, that they knew h had told me some things (probably referring to the possible reasons they moved out) and [my] friend is one of the reasons [they] left because they like to lie. This really hurt me because I still have no idea what this was about.

Later on, I'm not sure how much later, I was talking to h while roomie and their friends were in the next room. h was saying some things about the situation that I thought were a little extreme. I don't totally remember the order of events but it somehow ended up that roomie was yelling at h and they said something about h "creeping on transmasc freshmen." H is a trans woman and a sophomore, we are college students. I have a vague idea of who this might be referring to, if not myself or my roomie, who I don't think identifies as transmasc, but h had led me to believe that things ended amicably with this third party.

I have played the whole of Wadanohara, I know all of what happens in it already.

Do I agree with all of it? Well, no, not really. Do I still enjoy the game despite the parts focused on rape and sexual assault? Yeah, I do!

When it comes to someone creating their own original content, at the end of the day, we have to accept that some people are just going to create whatever the hell they want no matter how gross or disturbing or immoral we find it. And from there we have to decide how we are going to handle it.

I am able to look at Wadanohara and say "I like this game, I think it has a lot of good and fun aspects to it. However, I can acknowledge that the topic of rape is handled in a way that, to me, feels fetishistic and its portrayal is one that makes me uncomfortable."

I think it is always important to view things to realm of nuance, and that viewing things critically doesn't mean discarding them as soon as they do something problematic. I still like Wadanohara and a few other Funamusea games. I can still disagree with the way Funamusea handles topics like rape/sexual assault. I can like Wadanohara. I can find the rape scenes mishandled and gratuitous and gross. These ideas don't have to be at odds with one another. They can coexist.

One last thing I would like to add is that I think we as a society should learn to drop terms like "proship" and "anti". Everything you encounter will come with context and nuance. We don't have to say "I dislike this thing because it's proship". It is easier and more understandable to say "I dislike this thing because the way it handles topics like rape/assault/etc feels inappropriate and like it lacks nuance".

(Also this isn't me trying to "start beef" with Funamusea or anything. I am not saying she can't make what she makes, I'm just stating my own opinion on it and personal feelings towards it. And regardless of how I or anyone else feels, people will always create the content they want to create.)

In the reflection of the nearby window, you could see just how tired you were. You sighed as you continued on your way to your shared apartment. 

To put it as simply as you could, you had a bad day. Work was tiring, especially with the growing tasks that you had responsibility for. People around you were snappy and rude. And just as you were this close to losing it, on the way home, it started to pour rain. The weather had literally said nothing about the rain. So of course, you didn’t bring an umbrella.

You were shivering when you opened the door, your hair and clothes completely soaked. You let out a weary groan. But you brightened just the slightest when you remembered who else was home.

“Sangyeon?” You called out, your voice was croaky from disuse.

Your boyfriend popped his head out from another room with a smile.

“Hi, my love. You’re home late,” He greeted softly, soothing that pit in your stomach you had previously. But then, he froze when he noticed your disheveled state. He immediately rushed over to you, cupping your face in his warm hands. He examined you with worry, his eyes gentle on you. His thumb caressed your cheek softly. “Is everything okay?”

And you so badly wanted to say that you were completely fine. But, with the way he was gazing at you with so much care and with how gentle his touch was, you couldn’t help but squeeze your eyes shut to try to control the tears already welling up in your eyes.

“No, not really,” You whispered as you opened your watery eyes which led to a few drops of tears running down your face.

“I’m sorry about that.” He leaned in and pressed a soft kiss to your lips, and then to each of your cheeks to catch the tears falling down. His kisses immediately warmed up your cold body, ceasing your shivering. “Want me to take care of you?”

You shook your head in fear of being a burden.

“No, I– I can take care of myself. I don’t want to bother you.”

Sangyeon clicked his tongue in disapproval. He suddenly pulled you into a tight hug and whispered into your hair with a lighthearted tone, “Hey, who do you take me for? You would never bother me. In fact, taking care of you is in fact, my favorite lifelong hobby.” He pulled away, smiling. You could tell he was trying to cheer you up.

Your lips curled up just slightly.

“Okay, do as you please then.”

He led you to the bathroom. He began to set up the bathtub, turning the water on and adding bubbles. He even lit up a (very unnecessary) candle! He also made sure that the water wasn’t too cold. You watched from behind him with endearment of how much he was fussing over every small detail.

Finally, he turned around. “Go ahead.” He gently smiled, gesturing to the bathtub. 

You just stood there, staring at him as you toyed with the hem of your clothes. He looked at you confused before he widened his eyes with realization. He blushed and turned away from you.

You still stood there, completely stiff.

“Are you… not going to leave?”

“No.” He shook his head. “You said that I could do as I please, right? Then, I’ll help you wash your hair.”

“Oh… Sangyeon,” You breathed out.

“Ah, ah. Get undressed already. I won’t look.”

You took a deep breath, your face feeling hot as you quickly did so and climbed into the bathtub. Your stiff muscles immediately relaxed in the warm water. He turned back around after a moment and he approached where you were sitting, your body hidden under the bubbles and water.

He smiled dearly at you, brushing a hair strand away from your face.

You flushed, averting your gaze. “Stop staring. I look enough like a mess already.”

But he leaned in and pressed a kiss to your forehead this time.

“You look beautiful.”

You gulped and stared up at him speechless. He only chuckled at your response before grabbing your usual hair products. “Turn around, okay?” You followed as he said. The room was silent up until you heard him grab his phone and put on a song. It was a beautiful, slow, and romantic song. When he got to work lathering your hair, you felt yourself relax as his fingers worked into your scalp, massaging gently.

You felt your eyes droop but you instantly woke up when you realized that he was singing. He was singing to you, his voice soft and pretty as he sang along to the lyrics. You felt your heart soar, the past day completely forgotten.

After he finished, he turned you around and pressed another kiss to your cheek. 

“Go finish up and do whatever you want.” He smiled kindly. “I’ll be waiting for you in bed.”

“Interesting choice of words.”

“Don’t be dirty-minded,” He snorted.

Now with comfy clothes on, you reached for the hair dryer, only to realize that it was completely gone. You wandered into the room and you paused when you saw that he was just plugging it in. He had changed into a soft shirt, the one that you always fall asleep on. 

“Why would you steal it?” You laughed. 

“I did not steal it.” He pouted. Sangyeon was now sitting against the headboard, his legs sprawled on the bed. He raised an eyebrow and patted his lap. “Come sit.”

You stared at him in disbelief, almost like he was joking. But he tilted his head, completely serious.

“What are you waiting for?”

Hesitantly, you slowly walked over, playing with the hem of your shirt nervously. Even though you’ve been dating for a while, it was still hard not to feel flustered around Sangyeon, especially when he was looking at you with such a soft, fond gaze. You climbed onto the bed and sat on his lap, facing him. Your legs straddled his hips and your hands rested on his chest for support.

His hand came to your waist to pull you even closer. With a shaky breath, you looked down at him with round eyes. He simply smiled sweetly and turned on the dryer.

“You can relax with me,” He whispered soothingly. As he began to blow dry your hair, his fingers combed through it, getting rid of any tangles. He made sure not to accidentally blow the warm air on your skin or to pull on your hair too hard. Your heart skipped a beat at how cautious he was being. Usually, you dried your hair quite aggressively. But this time, he was treating you with so much care.

But then you winced at how loud the machine was with the earache you already had from the rain.

Sangyeon noticed quickly. “Is it loud?”

You shrugged. “It’s always this loud. There’s nothing to do about it.”

He thought for a moment. And then his hand suddenly hooked around your back. He pulled you into another position where your head was against his chest and you were now laying against his warm body. This way, the sound was muffled and he could focus on the back of your hair. You were quickly filled with warmth and you snuggled into his chest, reveling in his familiar, sweet scent.

“This is… comfortable.”

“I think so too,” He mumbled, pressing another kiss to your forehead.

You hadn’t noticed that you had dozed off. When you awoke, the dryer was off now and when you looked up, he was staring back at you with so much affection that your cheeks flushed.

“Beautiful.”

You whined, burying yourself back into his chest. He wrapped his arms around you and held you close.

“Love you,” You whispered.

“I love you too. So much.”

“Thank you for taking care of me.” You pulled away to press a long kiss to his lips.

“Of course, beautiful.” 

“Stop with that word,” You muttered. “I looked like a mess today, admit it.”

“I think that you’re the most beautiful in the world, baby.” He scrunched his nose, cutely. “Anytime, anywhere.”

You huffed, your ears turning red. “You’re insane.”

Okay have you considered I can’t turn my autism on and off and I don’t owe them to act allistically???

Like for context this was said to me bc I explained to other autistic ppl why pointing out things especially to strangers is considered rude. Like “you have diabetes neck, you probably have diabetes” is a statement an autistic child might make and to them it’s a neutral statement of fact akin to “oh wow it’s really cloudy it might rain soon”. But to other ppl it’s invasive and rude whether they know they have autism or not and regardless of if they’re right. And the explanation I gave was “it’s rude to point out things abt ppl that they can’t fix in 5 minutes bc it makes them feel self conscious and anxious”

Does someone owe some random w autism an explanation? No. Hence why I decided to look it up and research it myself. Social rules do not come naturally and intuitively to us. Just saying “don’t do x bc other ppl don’t like it” ISNT FUCKING HELPFUL. I don’t like ppl insisting on direct eye contact and I don’t like not being able to stim, but guess what? My boundaries are constantly violated bc our society has deemed my comfort as optional. Just not liking something is clearly not a good enough reason.

Having a reason helps autistic ppl understand the problem better and evaluate the next steps to take, especially if were low empathy (I’m not I usually have inappropriately high levels of empathy). Explaining that being out in public and having things abnormal or “wrong” about you pointed out you can’t fix immediately makes you feel anxious and like you shouldn’t be around other ppl at all even if you have stuff to do outside and thus ruins your day might help and autistic person go “ohhhh I see. You have things to do outside and I pointing this out might not be giving you a solution to a problem but just making it harder for you to complete basic tasks by producing anxiety. I will point stuff out in other people less, even if I think I might be correct”

Also like. Where the fuck did I say someone owes me an explanation to this problem??? Okay this one is sorta NSFW but it's not detailed. Anyway I made a tumblr blog about a deeply taboo subject that I am into (it is not illegal or immoral just heavily looked down upon) and since this thing is so taboo and shameful I don't tag my posts with it. I don't want to get harassment or banned yk. Anyway I found some sort of a community and one of them had a confession blog. I submitted an ask related to the content and mentioned a fic I really liked and they deleted my ask and made a post saying not to make asks personal related. Like it was fandom related it wasn't personal??? (The blog was about fandoms so) the community is so tiny and im kind of forced to interact if I want some content tbh. I'm also autistic and a freak so that does not make social matters any better. I just want to talk to more people about my *ahem* interest without getting canceled or shunned is that too much to ask :( anyway I also found a really cool person on Twitter who writes amazing fanfics I like. I feel bad for them because they're going through some mental stuff but they cater to my niche perfectly. I'm going through some mental stuff myself and I think thats what sparked me making the blog in the first place tbh. I've barely slept since making it and feel extremely anxious. Also further rant very off topic. The other day I sent an anon ask to a person that involved me oversharing about my mental illness. It was completely unasked for but said disorder was related to a post they made that upset me. I don't really feel bad abt it because they upset me and made a pretty rude post about a sensitive subject. I have more tea still. I infiltrated this community of insufferable people who had an anon ask blog much like this. People were so mean on there like I was just trying to share my thoughts like this and they kept bullying me :( it's so annoying bc my mental illness is irrational and people just don't Get It. These days I sometimes just pop into random peoples ask boxes and talk about this stuff. I just think way too much and my friends and people irl would think I am literally insane. I kind of am but thats beside the point. Here's to the ramblings of a mental person. Anyway diagnose me im waiting

not to sit here and weave a story out of nothing like a little protagonist via my quirky online storytelling but i rekindled my friendship with sam who is such an interesting person there are just a lot of stories of all sorts and this is funny timing but truly we just fell into such an easy banter this past class so we were like omg lets hang right so. his roommate really is just like stupid hot right. i could get corny with it but i wont. a face sculpted by the hands of god though. all this prefaced i will now tell u an absolutely nothing story and i really mean that read at your own discretion ((A/N: trust and believe i yapped. putting under keep reading to be somewhat forgivable) (i am not in my best of states rn. okay.)

anyway so we're chillin in sams room im getting caught up on the latest construction projects and shit.. one thing abt sam hes always up to something. they've got an entire work desk #butchrealness. then i hear some singing out in the hallway but from where im sitting cant actually see anyone so convo just goes sam and roommate 'hey' 'hey' and then i peeked my little head out and waved and said hey and they stopped and set down their basket and said 'Hey' and then i did not introduce myself (flop) (combo of cramped room and sam talking and me being wildly awkward) (also keep in mind i dont know if this person has swiped left on me or not been on tinder or if theyd even recognize me anyway and hating that that's even a situation bc i hate that stupid app but just hoping worst case scenario i dont come off as an insane stalker but rather a victim of circumstance) but they just chatted for a sec abt whatever shelf sam needs to fix and that was that. and then they went back to humming which was cute or whatever

to set the next scene we're down in the kitchen and sams cooking and this is a while after we took his homemade gummies so im not rlly high per se but chillin and something about the noise and setup in their kitchen is so overstimulating for me lol when shes cooking im just like frozen. i always offer to help but he always just gets in a groove it's best i dont intervene. one time he had to tell me to go sit down in the other room bc i was freakin out a little lol

so im perched on this single high chair they have in the kitchen right next to their washer and dryer as sams whipping up some food and im kind of obnoxiously saying Unfortch in response to a story he was telling me and he gives me a look so im like UnfortunateLy. and then hes like 'psh i know unfortch i live with this guy' cue roommate strollin in with laundry and theyre just like Whaat and sam explains and theyre like Oh ofc you gotta know unfortch or whatever. forgot to mention that earlier in sams room they said three similar abbreviated words in a row just during a normal sentence and it caught me so off guard i wanted to giggle. so naturally my brain is going through Immediate social response of a semi awk laugh or quippy remark about that but also theyre literally like a foot away from me and im largely nonverbal atm lmfaoo so i just mumble smth to try and go along w the bit but then trailed off cause i was like wtf am i even saying. brain was overloaded

and then i was like um. i literally was just staring around doing fuck all like a perched bird or something but i was fighting a war in my mind of like ok do i introduce myself or look to sam to do so or do we not do that or is that rude idk but also they have headphones on one ear and are doing all their laundry shit and i once again dont want to be like overbearing but also well come on now we gotta feel out the vibe (and i do a great job here.) idk so im like Ok dont just look at them but dont Not look at them just behave like a normal person. you know. the usual. sam comes over to give me a bit of bread with balsamic vinegar and oil and i spilled it on my sweater fuck this stupid baka life (didnt really show. but still they were right there..)

and so after a min of this they were kinda like awkward laugh 'dont mind me' and i once again was very self conscious and had several things that wanted to come out 'not at all' 'dont mind me' 'it's your house' 'these all sound awful abby' then i got anxious that i was in the way the whole time but they were almost done and if i got into a weird apology thing well i would have had to kill myself so i just once again kind of uttered something that would have sounded like 'youresogoodicanmovetoo' and also 'sorry if i just keep like looking over at you' WTF IS THAT SHIT. FUMBLE BOOOOO and my follow up was essentially nothing cause i couldnt decide if i should say 'im just a bit out of it/high' 'im easily distracted (kys)' 'idk what to do w myself haha' 'im useless in the kitchen' (not entirely true) i mean just a few minutes before sam and i had talked about how ill just wander around peoples rooms and observe things to avoid feeling awkward and it's just how i am and so i was kinda just doing that due to the nerves of the sitch but there was only so much to look at. and i just sat there. offputting realness. whatever. so. straight face emoji. and that was mostly the extent of that i dont remember what they said in response just like a lil laugh or w/e. probably couldnt hear my stupid ass mumbling. so im thinking my chances of charming them at all are really stellar

if you read all this i want you to just take note that the events depicted here could not have been more than 3-4 minutes collectively. and yet the yap goes on..

Can someone better explain autism to me?

My brother has autism and I have ADHD, and it can make it hard to interact with eachother, (ie; apart of my adhd habits is studying peoples faces and looking at their eyes and tracking their eyes, partially because I have a hard time remembering faces, and my brother hates eye contact and dislikes being stared at)

I often find myself getting annoyed at him for his way of speaking and his rudeness (for lack of a better word, I can’t think of anything else right now), and I’m trying to better understand it so that I don’t get upset with him (I find that I have a hyper fixation on other people following rules— mostly because I grew up in a household with strict a rules, down to the time that you were allowed to eat), and I don’t want to be getting mad at him over something he can’t control.

I really want to better understand his behaviors and stuff so that I can help show that I’m acknowledging him, and I want to be able to better read his emotions so that he doesn’t get angry like he used to.

This is kinda rambly but whatevez, if one of y’all can explain autism and autistic habits and what they mean I’d really appreciate it ♡

wrt that poll abt tone indicators thats going around.w ell first of all tbh i think some of the hatred for them comes from cringe culture. but second of all. some of the criticism is totally fair like there are a fuckton of tone indicators and sometimes . there really dont need to be. and the abbreviations can be confusing i try to type out ones that arent s srs or j. tho i feel like most of the newer ones were popularized on twt so itmakes sense they wouldnt be written all the way out

What are your thoughts on Rudy’s girlfriend? I personally don’t like her and feel she’s the reason between his and Madison’s friendship ending . I just think she’s controlling and trying to make him be different . He’s not as fun loving as he once was at least to me .

ooh hard question anon.Tbh I have no idea what's going on and I have heard that Elaine has been racist and rude but I haven't actually seen anything cos like I have said b4 I don't rlly follow the cast's on everything. And so I rlly don't know if it's true.I think that Rudy and Madison's friendship is between them and them only. It is a private relationship and I personally believe that fans shouldn't be trying to find everything out. One thing that many ppl forget is that at the end of the day, celebrities are also humans and need privacy. As for Elaine, I rlly don't mind her cos I don't know much abt her. She seems nice and her relationship with Rudy doesn't seem toxic to me. I disagree with ur opinion that she's trying to make Rudy be different. People change and that's completely okay. If there is direct toxicity in their relationship I'm sure Rudy's family or friends will acknowledge it and help him out. Again this is a relationship and it is meant for only the two people in it. We shouldn't be pondering about how their relationship is going. One more thing, my blog is about the fictional characters in OBX. I have dedicated my blog to the fictional side of things and yes I may have posted here and now stuff about the cast. Like phot0s of Rudy+Drew's cute friendship but I do not go ponder about what is going on in their lives every minute(not that ur doing that but). I may look at their instagram stories when they post something but that's where I cross the line.I don't send hate msgs to Madison or Elaine. I don't have convos with others about the casts relationships and I don't blame any of the cast or the cast's friends/families for anything.It's not my place to do so. I am not there to actually see what's going on and I'm not related to them in any way.
