Once Upon a Pride
Once Upon a Pride
June has been dubbed Gay Pride Month and you know what that means.
Woo!
Well, okay, it means many things.
But among them is the launch of and spotlight on anything having to do with the LGBTQ community, a 30-day period where we are discussed, referenced, represented and respected.
Okay, mostly respected, because there will always be haters of any marginalized group. This is true even in…

The Handmaids Tale AU
Commander!Joel Miller x Darkish!Handmaid!Reader
Summary: A few decades into Gilead’s conception, you head into your first posting as a handmaid after an affair with a guardian landed you in trouble. Determined to keep your head low in order to keep your son safe, you take on the moniker of OfJoel. Commander Miller has very little to do with you and mrs. Miller regards you with disgust, however you find solace in an unlikely friendship with Commander Miller’s daughter from a handmaid 14 years ago, Ellie who just got done with wives school. You and your friend, Ofthomas start teacher her and her friend Reilly under her mothers nose. Slowly, Commander Miller begins spending time with you and you begin to learn more about the man he was before and an affair begins outside the confines of the ceremony. Although initially you go along with it out if survival, you find yourself falling for the version of Joel you saw in these late night rendezvous.
Which Joel is really him, and how will he react when his own daughters secrets are revealed?
Content and Warnings: DARK JOEL! DUB CON!
Although no violent rape happens like in TWW, reader is under systemic misogyny and a society of ritualized sex abuse. Everything other than the violent rape scenes, everything that happen in either The Handmaids Tale book or show are liable to happen here including but not limited to discussion of rape, child abuse, child marriage, ritualized sexual abuse, sexual abuse in general, acts of violence, major character deaths, mentions of miscarriage but never shown and never pregnancies we know of. Big ole homophobia warning, specifically in regards to lesbophobia. As for Joel, PIV sex, breeding kink, degrading (slut, whore etc but thing like Raider!joel) forced breeding and breeding kink, power dynamics, Joel is not the good guy but he’s also not the worst, slightly rough sex but not violent. Cucking, reader cucks joel's wife, is dark, participates in non con.
Warnings are liable to be added as the story goes but I’ll always update. As always if I miss something please tell me, but i extensively label my warnings and in the end media consumption is your own choice. If you would like to know if this is a happy ending or not you can message me and I’ll tell you that way I don’t spoil for everyone but you can decide if this is for you.
Immersability: Reader has long hair, can conceive children theoretically. At one point, she has to pose as Ellie's mother and I know this can be loaded in terms of skin tone. I am no genetics expert but I know dark skinned parents can have white passing children, like Lional Richie and Nicle Richie. It's up to you to see if this is going to take you out of the story or not.
Undecided amount of chapters
Chapter 1: You meet your first commander, his family, and your new walking partner
Chapter 2: Your first ceremony, and you see something you aren’t supposed to.
Chapter 3: Everything is not as it seems in either Miller household.

1980s Horror Film Character Names
I totally forgot I’d started making this last year! I think I never posted it because I wanted to find more names, but there’s already a decent amount and I don’t feel like being that tedious about names right now lol.
It’s first & last names (separated for mix & match potential) of characters from iconic late 1970s & 1980s horror movies. I think I started looking for cheesier B-movies to pull from, but yeah it’s been a whole year so I forget.

EXCLUSIVE: Great American Media, the faith and family-focused company that launched in 2021 under Bill Abbott, is the latest to get hit with layoffs.
Deadline has learned that roughly 13 people were cut from top jobs on Monday, including Loren Schwartz, Chief Marketing Officer; Jamie Kramer, EVP Digital & Strategic Growth; Max Pinigin, Chief Financial Officer; Angela Sullivan, VP Corporate Communications, Brian Pancarik, Exec VP User Experience & Operations; Michael Hough, Head of Financial Planning and Analysis; and Nicole Gardner, Pure Flix Creative Director.
In a statement released to Deadline, the company said, “In 2023, Sony invested in Great American Media and rolled its PureFlix streaming video on demand service into GAM’s business to be run by GAM management for the purpose of maximizing the synergies between the two. On the heels of a highly successful year, we excelled with our Christmas launch and we kicked off 2024 hosting the Rose Parade, announced the network’s first-ever original series, “County Rescue,” and announced the launch of our own mystery franchises. And we will be launching even more programming, content and experiences throughout the year.”
“We are now looking to maximize the synergies of our brands just as NetFlix narrowed its focus this year, we are taking steps to focus on our strengths,” the statement continued. “We are a streaming platform with a linear audience approaching 70 milion viewers in our platforms and our objective is to maximize the synergies between the audiences. Technology is critical to our success, so the decision was made to align the technology intersection with content marketing to enhance the viewer and consumer experience across platforms, meet our viewers where they are with the content they want. With an experienced CTO, we consolidated key marketing functions into our technology team to align our marketing and technology platforms to ensure we maximize synergies between our estimated 70 million linear/cable viewers and our leading faith, family and streaming offering, Great American Pure Flix.”
Before the layoffs, Great American Family has said business has been robust. It says it entered the 2023 Christmas season by posting 12 consecutive months as TV’s fastest growing linear channel.
And in a statement released Monday, Abbott said, “We are continuing to build on the phenomenal growth of our media brand and are excited to now fully capitalize on the synergies now available with Sony and Great American Pure Flix. Our portfolio of content is a trusted source of family friendly and faith-based entertainment, and our 2023 results greatly exceeded our expectations.”
The statement came with the announcement that GAF is getting into the scripted series business by launching County Rescue, an action-adventure medical drama starring Julia Reilly (Stranger Things) as an EMT in training. The five-episode first season will premiere on Great American Pure Flix beginning February 16 and on Great American Family beginning February 17. Great American Pure Flix is the company’s streaming service that was rebranded in September 2023.
GAF is also planning a Q1 launch of mystery franchises — original movies centered on the lighter side of mysteries and whodunnits and starring fan favorites from the network’s family of talent.
In an interview with Deadline in September, Abbott admitted that running a new network in this current environment has been a challenge.
“I would never have thought we’d be at the point where we still were running pretty hard,” he said. “We’re in the middle of an advertising recession, the strike, and cord cutting accelerating. There are a number of overall macro factors that have made the business that much more difficult in 2023 than we anticipated in 2021. And then you add to that the competition and the model being very much in question around how ultimately programmers get paid for creating great content. We know the streaming model needs a lot of work and is underwater in a lot of places. So there are big challenges out there that make it that much tougher.”

one of my irl friends had an insane outrage recently, and I feel like you're the perfect person to tell about it.
Ok, so this friend of mine is super mad that Spider Gwen is lightly hinted to being trans, like she's furious. She keeps saying that they shouldn't change a pre-existing character like that and they should have made an entirely new character instead.
I tried telling her that
this is a new story with new versions of preexisting characters
they won't make a canonically trans spider man for like a decade at least because of the current climate
Keep in mind that she is trans herself. And it's just wild to me that she gets so pissed about it, like it's fine to not like it. But getting this pissed? I just don't get it. The only reaction I had to it was like "huh, that's kinda neat"
Like it was just a hint, nothing was confirmed. Like girl just chill out
Technically we had Jessica Drew/Parker/Reilly from Ultimate, the girl clone of "Peter" who had "His" memories but remained happily a woman, but yeah.
Marvel is actually pretty annoying when it comes to canon trans rep, we only got proper Mutant Trans characters recently (Escape, and maybe Mother Rightous, but eh), plus they seem to ignore earlier efforts such as Loki's gender fluid status and Sera (Angela's Wife)

Sunday Reading Wrap-Up
What are you currently reading?
M.T. Clanchy - From Memory to Written Record: England 1066-1307 47% read. I've said this before - this book was written to be written, not to be read. It's utterly fascinating but it's a serious slog
DK Publishing - SuperSimple Chemistry 18% read. I picked this up on the Libby app, I didn't realise it was a bite-size revision guide LOL but I've been on a science kick lately and it looked interesting. It is.
Imogen Edwards-Jones - The Witches of St. Petersburg 65% read. I'm feeling a little meh on this one. It has some good bits but mostly interspersed with blah. I don't really care about the characters but I'm kinda curious where it goes. Mostly reading to fill the Russia prompt on a Round The World reading challenge.
Claire Heywood - The Shadow Of Perseus 49% read. Picked it up from the library, and I am loving this, y'all. It's being told from the women in his life, so far I've read Danae and Medusa, and moving to Andromeda. So much love!
Stel Pavlou - Decipher 40% read, still absolutely batshit and I fucking love it! grins a bit like Matthew Reilly's Temple, it has all the best bits of crazy sci-fi & pseudoscience & pseudohistory, with just enough of the actual stuff… kind of Ancient Aliens. LOL
Matthew Reilly - Ice Station 35% read, not loving it quite as much as Temple but it's still a thoroughly enjoyable read. Maybe a little similar plotline-wise in places to Decipher but a very different approach.
I think my goal for the weekend is to finish either Witches Of St Petersburg or The Shadow of Perseus
What did you recently finish reading?
Steve Jackson & Ian Livingstone - The Warlock of Firetop Mountain 4/5 Li and I discovered we both loved Choose Your Own Adventure & Fighting Fantasy books when we were kids, so naturally we checked this out of the library and had a super nerdy date night. It took us 4 attempts to get through - Li drawing the map of our adventure while I read the book out.
Raynor Winn - The Salt Path 4/5 This had been on my TBR for ages, I saw one of her other books in the library so checked to see if they had this one, which they did and it was bloody brilliant, I could barely put it down.
Janna Levin - Black Hole Survival Guide 3/5. Like I said, I've been on a science kick recently, this was actually one of Li's library books but I ended up reading it as well. I understood about 60% of the actual science, but could follow what Levin was saying about 90% of the time. Throughly enjoyed my trip into a black hole grins
Kris Hallenga - Glittering a Turd 4.5. I picked this one up on Libby purely based on the title, didn't look to see what it was about. And I'm glad I didn't, because I probably wouldn't have read this, if I'd known it was a memoir of someone living with stage 4 cancer. But it's amazing and highly recommended!
Angela Kelly - The Other Side Of The Coin 4/5. Another random Libby read (I love the app for that LOL) but I couldn't resist it. A memoir of the Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s Personal Advisor, Curator, Wardrobe and In-house Designer, filled with so many lovely anecdotes and fascinating details about what goes into dressing The Queen. And lovely never-seen-before candid photos. I thoroughly enjoyed it - and Li knows I did because of how much I read out loud to her LOL
What do you think you’ll read next?
Meik Wiking - The Little Book of Lykke
Katja Pantzar - The Finnish Way: Finding Courage, Wellness, and Happiness Through the Power of Sisu
Both books I picked up from the library based on how much I loved the Hygge books. I don't know if I'll enjoy them, but I'm curious and they're due back next week so definitely moving to the top of the pile LOL
