Happy Femslash February! I got thrown off the rec wagon the past couple months for Life Reasons but I'm back and I've got a whole pile for you.

These Moments Given by Mytha. Cassandra/Leliana, 1200 words, rated T. The Left and Right Hand take comfort in one another after the explosion at the Conclave. This fic really brings to life the terrible events we don't see in the game.

Vulnerability by @ziskandra. Isabela/Female Hawke, 1200 words, rated E. Hawke and Isabela deal with the aftermath of the Qunari invasion in their own way. I love how this explores Hawke's insecurities and fear of losing those she loves, lots of complicated emotions and uncertainties.

Right Hand by @ziskandra. Female Trevelyan/Cassandra, 1400 words, rated T. The Inquisitor works to adjust to her disability and a new role at the side of the Divine. I like the way it explores some complicated feelings on the part of Trevelyan about ability and agency.

Coin Tricks by @chocochipbiscuit. Isabela/Merrill, 2200 words, rated G. Merrill and Isabela talk about luck, carrying it with you and making your own. Choco writes both characters and their dynamic so, so well and it's a delight to read.

Arcane Deflection by @settiai. Harding/Dagna, 2600 words, rated T. This charming fic explores a growing relationship between Harding and Dagna while also digging into Harding's inner life and experiences in the Inquisition in ways I love.

Aeducan Pride by Cartadwarfwithaheartofgold. Rica/Female Aeducan, Rica/Bhelan, 2900 words, rated M. Warnings: Unhealthy relationships, power differences, dubious consent. Sereda Aeducan takes everything from her brother: the crown, his son, his plans, and finally, his wife. My favorite thing about this fic is Rica, her cunning and shrewdness and her focus on keeping herself and her son alive, and I also really enjoyed how a conniving and manipulative Sereda not only keeps Rica close but gains her affections as well.

Close at Hand, Friend and Foe by Cryptographic_Delurk. Anora/Cauthrien, 3000 words, rated T. A sharp and incisive character study Anora as well a story as two very different women fleeing the kingdom that has cast them aside. I really enjoyed the tension between Anora and Cauthrien as they struggle to find common ground.

bound up by your thread by @chocochipbiscuit. Isabela/Female Hawke, 3400 words, rated E. Some good old bondage, an old favorite of mine! and Hawke not having to make decisions just for a little while.

Birdsong by @montpahrnah. Isabela/Female Hawke, 6000 words, rated M. Warnings: Major Character Death. Isabela struggles to come to terms with Hawke's death in the Fade. An incredible, moving exploration of grief I'm not ashamed to say I ugly-cried my way through.

Her Beacon and Her Shield by Sheeana. Female Cousland/Anora, 8500 words, rated T. Political marriage to lovers, a trope I adore! I loved watching Anora and Elissa's foundational respect for one another as allies progress to fondness and affection. A bittersweet conclusion, yet with a sense of hope.

Dinner Time series by @fireferns. Dalish/Skinner, six short fics totalling 18000 words, ratings G through E. I love the author's prose style, and the loving attention to both these minor characters, developing their personalities and backstories; a truly wonderful read.

after the Battle of Denerim

A bit beyond six sentences for this particular Sunday~ ^_^

Queen Anora Mac Tir learns of the Archdemon's fall and her father's death. Features forced-betrothal awkwardness with Alistair and a vulnerable moment with Heather Cousland.

“My queen, I bring news regarding the fight against the Archdemon.”

The messenger’s hunched posture and inability to meet Anora’s eyes convey more than enough, but she must hear the truth from the woman’s lips. “Report.”

“The burst of light we saw did mark the creature’s death. The Blight is over.”

Over, at long last. But at what cost? “Who survived?”

“Most forces led into battle by Warden Surana remain with us, though many soldiers are injured.”

It is still strange to hear others refer to that mage as a commander. “What of the Wardens themselves?”

“Warden Riordan was killed mid-battle. Warden Surana yet lives. But Teyrn— Warden Mac Tir…”

Her heart twists. Her throat clenches. Her emotions do not—cannot show on her face. “I said, report.”

The messenger gulps. “According to Warden Surana, Warden Mac Tir died while delivering the final blow that killed the Archdemon.”

Surana did not claim the credit. Anora sets aside that detail for later consideration. “So it is defeated.”

“Yes, your Majesty.”

“By my father’s hand.”

“That is what I was told.”

Then he fell protecting the country he loved. A mixture of grief and relief she will not reveal builds pressure behind her eyes. “Thank you for the report. Ensure what we know is recorded. Once Denerim recovers, we will celebrate this victory.”

“Yes, my queen.” The messenger hesitates.

Anora narrows her eyes. “You are dismissed.”

The woman bows and flees the room.

There is much to be done—Denerim still burns, soldiers and civilians alike are injured, and even the healthy will require rations, shelter, a place to sleep. Anora is not so naive as to believe that no hostiles remain within the city walls simply because the Archdemon was slain. And she did not spend nearly every waking moment ruling this nation in Cailan’s absence and after his death to watch it fall apart now.

Hour after hour passes. Only her steward’s intervention ensures she eats meals at reasonable times. It’s long past sunset when a gentle tap on her elbow startles her out of her focus. She glances up to find Alistair’s face creased with concern. “You should rest.”

“Later.”

He grips her shoulder. “I don’t think you’ll enjoy me being the one to remind you of your duty to our people.”

Anora shakes off his grasp. “I accept your point. I will retire for the evening.”

“I’m not sure right now still counts as ‘evening,’ Anora.”

A realization of weariness unexpectedly doubles the weight of her limbs. “I will retire for the night. Alone.”

He exhales and steps back, his hands raised in defense. “We aren’t married yet. I wasn’t going to ask.”

She blames exhaustion for her words, her tone. Exhaustion and repressed sorrow. “Thank you, Alistair. For checking on me.”

He blinks. “Of course I checked on you. And… you’re welcome.”

Anora nods once in acknowledgment. Then she pushes herself away from the desk and wraps herself in a veneer of weary calm en route to her chamber, offering tired greetings and words of thanks to those she meets along the way. But once she closes the door behind her, she slumps backward against it and sliding down to the floor, burying her head in her arms. Yet tears do not fall.

“I knew you wouldn’t relax until you were back here.”

Anora bolts upright, grabbing the nearby bronze candlestick—not much of a weapon, but it is preferable to empty hands. Then her alarm eases enough to recognize the woman seated on her bed. “Maker take you, Heather. When did you sneak into my room?”

Heather Cousland yawns while languidly stretching her arms above her head. “Some time ago. You kept me waiting.”

Anora opens her mouth to protest the absurd claim and then decides against it. Heather is goading her into a retort. “I asked you to support civilians in finding shelter. Why are you here?”

“Because after I heard about your father, I needed to be at your side.”

Admitting her selfishness instead of declaring she did this for my sake is unlike her. Moisture stings Anora’s eyes. “What game are you playing?”

Heather quickly crosses the space between them to grasp her hands. “No game, Anora. You’re hurting, no matter how well you hide it. When you hurt, I hurt. If you don’t want me here, say the word, and I’ll leave. But if there’s anything I can do to support you, name it, and it’s yours.”

Anora stands perfectly still as a battle rages in her mind. She must maintain her own strength. Any cracks will only confirm the belief that she should not be queen. Despite Surana’s surprising machinations, her betrothal to Alistair—and thus her position—is not set in stone, and she will not provide Arl Eamon further reason to argue against it.

But Heather’s gentle, earnest gaze overpowers her weakening defenses. She collapses into her arms, finally releasing her grief.

Listen Before I Go

"It was a love match, you know."

Sereda hesitated as she snatched the handle to Anora's temporary chambers. She'd heard enough of the woman's insistence on being queen, especially her implications with regard to Alistair.

"...What are you talking about?" Sereda asked, humoring her. It had been years since she'd spoken of Cailan, and her last meeting with him was bittersweet, just before his death.

Anora casually ran her fingers along the wood of her sleighbed as she spoke, knowing she'd struck a chord. It was unnerving how well Anora sensed it. "Don't insult my intelligence, Lady Cousland. You know full well as to what I am referring," she said.

She dropped her hand, defeated. All Sereda knew about Cailian ending their brief courtship was his 'duty to the throne'; after his father went missing, and marrying Anora as a result. He never fully explained why, just that he was to do as he was bid - and nothing more. It vexed her for years until she was able to push it into the deep recesses of her heart.

And now the woman who claimed him had the audacity to mention him.

"...Fine, I'll bite," Sereda said softly, still avoiding the woman's hard gaze. Yet, she continued to speak so casually of Cailian, the man she had wed, her dead husband.

"I found him, once..." Anora paused, as if considering her next words. Unbeknownst to Sereda, she was opening her own wounds. Perhaps, she hoped, if she reached out to the Warden, heart to heart, woman to woman, she could convince her that she would be the proper ruler that Ferelden needed, and not the bastard that she was so utterly in love with.

Oh, the irony of it all.

"He was asleep in our bed, from a night of drinking," she scoffed bitterly. "It was supposed to be a night of celebration. I was pregnant, with his first child. He was so happy. The kingdom, was happy..."

Sereda recalled the gossip and rumors, the stories from her mother and father of the announcement. She still remembered how bitter she felt, but did her damnedest to ignore it all the same. Sereda fought to urge to ask her to get to the point.

"He fell asleep, with some missive in his hand, close to his chest. I thought he was in the middle of some last-minute paperwork, some notice. My curiosity got the better of me," Anora had been slowly pacing about the room, consoling her own growing anxiety from the memory.

"It was one of your many letters, from what I learned later on. I knew you both had corresponded in the past, that he once courted you. I accepted that. 'Twas the nature of men and their politics," she paused, her tone changing into something soft; vulnerable.

"But, this letter... it was different. It was worn, unlike the others. As if he'd read it on many ocassion. I knew I'd regret reading it, but I did it anyway. I... I had to know. I had to know what you had that I didn't..."

How I feel about this character: my favourite character in the franchise, hands down. she recognises her privilege and actively works against her internal biases in origins, leading to her support of briala in inquisition. she supports mages basically the most out of any other non-mage character. she’s bi and open about it and really really pretty. she acknowledges that the chantry needs to change and actively works to change it. anyway i would die for her.

All the people I ship romantically with this character: basically any ocs, but cousland and surana in particular! i also ship her with isabela, alistair, anora, and briala. leliana x fiona could be cool, too.

My non-romantic OTP for this character: my female amell who romances alistair. also, hawke and anders. i hc that she helped varric hide hawke, especially since my hawke romanced anders and supported him until the end. idk, i just think she and hawke would get on well.

My unpopular opinion about this character: i personally prefer hardening her than softening her, especially in origins. i feel like, narratively-speaking, it makes more sense for her to be hardened in origins and softened in inquisition. i prefer her to go murderpope in inq mostly because i think her faith can blindside her, and i feel that that’s the safer option, especially regarding free mages and elves.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: marrying the warden, if romanced (and they’re not on the fereldan throne)! also, i wish she would tell cullen off, especially considering her very radical pro-mage stance (which i wholeheartedly approve of). yeah, leliana’s my comfort character.

How I feel about this character: i love her! she’s not my all-time fave in darkest dungeon (that would be either dismas or bigby) but i love her attacks, style, and backstory so much. i’m gonna get back to my fic soon, i  s w e a r.

All the people I ship romantically with this character: oh, uh *checks notes* audrey, junia, alhazred. mostly audrey, though. but i also hc para as polyamorous (she strikes me as the type to completely tear down societal boundaries that she sees as pointless) so i get the best of all worlds!

My non-romantic OTP for this character: para and bigby! i just want them to appreciate science together. plus, para probably wouldn’t be as freaked out about him as most of the other heroes. she’s much more level-headed.

My unpopular opinion about this character: i really don’t like her with baldwin. it screams doctor taking advantage of a patient, which is so unlike para and just downright wrong. para and baldwin both seem like they’re very professional, serious people, so any romance between them feels very out of character in my opinion.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: i really wish we had the opportunity to delve deeper into her backstory and see her relationship with the other heroes, especially junia, alhazred, and bigby. she deserves friends, dammit.

For the ‘Give Me A Series’ question... I wanna know each Dragon Age game. If you haven’t played one, then just the ones you have. 😁🥰

I only played DA2 once and I’m waiting for a chance to get expansions before a replay. I also didn’t do the witch expansion because a weird timing of executive dysfunctiion and new hyper fixations.

Favorite Male: Alistair.  He’s a super kind and goofy knight. I’m weak.

Favorite Female: Wynne

Favorite pairing: Damn it I loved all the romances.  I would say ali x warden but I feel that’s too obvious.  Zevwarden. Underrated as hell.  

Least Favorite: Anora, she looks like the twin of my emotionally manipulative cousin. Like nothing against her writing just I can’t get over that fact.

Most like me: Alistair.  Like I’m pretty sure he has adhd.  He just acts too much like me and my brother that it’s hard to imagine him as nerotypical.  Also people think he’s stupid.  Even if there is evidence he’s not.  And if you have adhd people will see you as stupid,lazy or both. Also knows so much about warden history might be a hyperfixation. Sorry I put a lot of thought into this.

Most attractive:

Oh boy.  Like I feel as a bi asking what DA characters are the most attractive should be illegal.   Alistair for the men and Morrigan just pure looks for women.  Though if Lelianna was real, I probably would have a crush on her if we’re friends and Alistair same thing.

Favorite male- Nathaniel is the most interesting of the bunch. Defintly with the cousland orgin

Favorite Female: Sigrun.  She’s the best.

Favorite pairing: I guess Nathaniel x Cousland.   My mind wasn’t on full shipping mode because I already had a romance I adore.  Maybe Sigrun x Nathaniel x sigrun is also an entertaining thought.  Like grump x sunshine is always nice. Also since my laptop won’t let me go back with out deleting.  Nate x Cousland, awesome potential with the histories.

Least favorite: Oghren I guess.  I feel bad dissing the guy because there’s stuff I like about him.  Like the backstory and how he’s still by the warden side even after the blight.  

Most attractive: Between Nate and Sigrun

More characters I like:  Anders, Oghren because I feel bad dissing him and Justice.

Favorite Male: Carver.Like yeah he’s can be kind of prickly, but he is the most realistic brother I’ve seen.

Favorite pairing: canon I guess fenris x Hawke since the only one I’ve done.  But I also like the idea of Isabelle x Merril x Hawke

Most like me:   Varric. Sarcastic best friend

Most attractive:  Isabelle and FemHawke

Favorite Male character: Cullen- I relate to him alot

Favorite Female: Josephine.  She’s just so sweet.

Favorite pairing: Cullen x inquisitor, I wrote too many fanfics on those two

Least Favorite: Corephyus.  Not in a he’s evil, duh.  But really boring villian.  I heard there’s more in a DA2 expansion but I don’t have that.  And he’s just there.

Most like me: Cullen, we both seem to deal with tramau the same way.  Though Blackwall is a close second.  

Most attractive:  Everyone is not an answer I assume.  I guess Cullen.

More characters I like:  I’ll leave varric off because DA2.  And Lelianna for the same reason.  Cassandra, Mia, Cole

One-word prompts: Respect

As the entire royal court treks to Gwaren to pay their respects at Celia Mac Tir’s funeral, no one questions Heather’s presence in Anora’s carriage. Sometimes Cailan joins them, sitting in sorrowful silence, but other times he rides on horseback ahead of them.

Heather rarely leaves Anora’s side. She alternates between strumming her lute, braiding Anora’s hair, offering her lap for the queen’s head, or otherwise staying close, often with her arm around Anora’s shoulders or their fingers entwined together.

Anora rarely speaks. It isn’t until the third day of the journey that she finally sheds tears. And it’s Heather, not Cailan, who’s present to hold her until that round of grief subsides.

The night before they reach Gwaren Castle, Anora begs Heather for physical comfort. Despite the risk of discovery, Heather can’t refuse. Whatever Anora wants right now, she gets.
