Finishing Too Much Information

Around 2017/18 time, my best friend Niamh and I did a podcast on my YouTube channel critiquing The Mortal Instruments book series. This series was called "Too Much Information".

Unfortunately, after our video on City of Fallen Angels a series of events prevented us from finishing, and videos for City of Lost Souls and City of Heavenly Fire were never filmed. Thus Too Much Information remained incomplete.

Until, hopefully, now.

Niamh and I want to try to finish Too Much Information. We're not promising anything, but we want to try. A large part of the series was taking the thoughts and opinions of my followers at the time, which I wrote down and we'd discuss on camera. So, if by some miracle anyone who used to watch the podcast and sent me things to talk about are still following me here, I'd love to hear your thoughts on CoLS and CoHF.

I know it's a long shot considering it's been five years since the last upload, but sometimes long shots pay off. So please don't hesitate! Get in contact and send me your thoughts ❤️

i might be wrong BUT some of you people will have the time of your life when TWP come out or you'll gonna have the biggest downfall in your life 'cause of the expectations u guys are creating.

Personally, i don't have much expectations i just want my faves alive and finally have their peace. To be honest I'm alredy seeing some of you mad cause the theorys and favoritism in some characters are on HIGH LEVEL (cof cof kit herondale) and if these theories and expectations don't meet with the story cassie is about to deliver u guys are gonna be annoying as hell.

I feel like when I’m reading or watching something, for me to like a hero, they have to

1) have ambition about anything

2) not be annoying

3) not excuse their shitty behaviour with their shitty childhood

4) not be so self-righteous they don’t see their own flaws

For these reasons I hate with a burning passion Jace Herondale, Clary Fairchild, Eli Ever, Tiberius “Cal” Calore VIII, Dean Winchester, and Legend/Dante Santos

Jace is constantly doing something shitty in every book and people don’t care and they just put up with it for some reason. In CoG he belittles Clary because he wants to push her away but keeps coming back to her. He also keeps coming onto Clary when he thought she was his sister and said that cursed sentence in CoG that I need to bleach from my brain. I know if he said that shit to me I would’ve punched him in his stupid face cuz who does he think he is? He mocks the werewolves after they lost a child in their pack, he’s just awful to Alec at times, he doesn’t seem to understand there are consequences to his actions and just does shit because he wants to. He had the emotional maturity of a dried up pinecone.

Clary also does so much shit and people don’t call her out because she’s the protagonist and she just lets Jace do whatever to her because he’s hot. Girl please get a grip. She slut shames Izzy because apparently women aren’t allowed to have a sex life or wear revealing clothing 😒 girl you kissed someone you thought was YOUR BROTHER!! She dated Simon to get over Jace and then kissed Jace in the Seelie Court, and repeatedly thought about Jace in a romantic sense WHILE she thought they were SIBLINGS! I can’t.

Eli is so self-righteous, annoying and hypocritical. He uses God and religion as an excuse to kill innocent people which is just disgusting. Like I get that he thinks being an EO changed a person because Victor became different but he is an EO himself and he just takes it on himself to murder innocent people for simply existing.

Cal has no desire to do anything, at least up to the beginning of King’s Cage he doesn’t (where I currently am). He knows how poorly the Reds are being treated and he doesn’t want to change anything because (and I’m paraphrasing) there would be outrage among the Silvers and a war would break out. Bitch you are already at war! He’s the reason why so many innocent young Reds have lost their lives fighting in a war they have no say in. He sees the Scarlet Guard killing Silvers and he doesn’t try to stop them. He sulks and whines but doesn’t take any real action, which he could if he actually wanted to. He stalks around the camp like Mare’s dog and thinks he’s better than everyone.

Dean Winchester is an abusive asshole. He locked Sam in the cellar when he was addicted to demon blood when he knew the withdrawal could kill him. He shit on Sam for being manipulated. He’s made horrible perverted jokes about women, might I remind y’all of the high school episode (he was at least 26 at the time). He guilted Sam for leaving him in Hell and Purgatory when he did THE EXACT SAME THING when Same went to the cage. He threatened Kaia, a teenager at gun point for his own selfish purposes. He abused Jack til the very end, yelling that he wasn’t family when Jack had sacrificed his soul and life for the Winchesters, and made Jack hate himself for being born. He was shitty to Cas in so many seasons and didn’t care that Cas just went through seeing his son die and wasn’t able to save him. He violated Sam’s body by tricking him into letting Gadreel in which led to the death of Kevin and had the audacity to think he was wronged.

Dante is shit. Julian, his brother, lived with him for centuries, followed him wherever he went and loved him unconditionally. All Julian asked was for Dante to love him back, which he never did. When Julian finally found someone who loved him, Dante made fun of him. And then in the next book he gives up his immortality for Tella, a girl he has known for literal months at most. He didn’t love his brother, who has been with him since the beginning, enough to give up his immortality but he loved this random girl he has known for a couple months at most to give it all up?? Tella should’ve left him in the dust just like she did Jacks and went off on adventures by herself and met someone that wasn’t a twat.

What pisses me off the most about ShadowhuntersTV:

Explanation (books):

In the books we find out that newborn shadowhunter babies go through a protection ritual. This ritual is accompanied by a Brother of Silence and an Iron Sister. Or in Clary's case, by Tessa Gray, a warlock. This ritual prevents demons from possessing shadowhunters.

Yes, Jace could be possessed by Lilith in City of Fallen Angels, but only because the ritual was lifted from Jace because he died.

Jesse could only be possessed by Belial because the protection ritual was never properly performed. (Belial had ensured that he can take possession of Jesse.)

And there are also reasons why there are institutes: the institutes offer protection from demons!

Demons or vampires can enter the institute only one way and that is through the sanctuary.

But ShadowhuntersTV is just given a shit about everything. Alec and other shadowhunters could easily be possessed by a demon and once killed half the staff of the New York Institute. Seriously now? You had one job and that was to make a TV show based on a book series and you couldn't even do that.

Unpopular opinions about TSC

This isn’t particularly unpopular but I don’t like Jace. Sorry to Jace fans. I was mainly neutral about him my first time reading TMI but I recently came across anti Jace posts and then reread TMI and started not liking him. I guess it makes sense that he started out as Draco Malfoy (in a fan fiction). TDA Jace was superior tho, but that's probably just because he's not the main character.

Lucie Herondale deserved better. Like, she is such an interesting character and her powers (to me) were more interesting than James. Also, she was Cordelia’s parabatai sos he deserved more time in the book.

The main couples were pretty boring (this might just be me because I get that with basically everything). Sorry but I already know that they are going to end up together and I’ve already seen so much of them, I just want to see the other characters.

The sibling relationships are so unrelatable. The ones that remind me of my siblings the most are Ty and Mark at the start of TDA (I too would throw a wooden dagger at my brother) and Thomas, Barbara (RIP Queen 👑) and Eugenia (Saying this as a middle child with an older sister and a younger brother).

This isn’t actually an opinion but after reading TMI I was pronouncing parabatai as ‘Paba-ra-ti’ and I could not understand parabatai jokes for ages 😭

I don't like the Shadowhunter show. I don't actually feel as strongly about this as I do in other opinions because it feels so different from the books. It has it's good moments but it all feels weird because Raphael is aroace in the books and he's such special character to me.

I did not care about Christopher's death. I feel so bad about it but I just think he is a poorly written character with a poorly written death. The protagonists did not care about him (by protagonists I mean James and Matthew) and everyone's reactions were so underwhelming. It just felt more like CC wanted a heart-breaking death than an interesting character and there was no point in him dying.

Kit is so overhyped just like Jace was but at least he’s more decent. I just don’t like him avoiding the blackthorns all because he’s feeling angsty. Like they were going through HELL yet he made Jem think they weren’t there for him enough

I’ve made quite a few posts that detail my thoughts on Kit so I’d say it’s pretty clear I agree that Kit is overpowered and overhyped. I’m not sure if this ask is saying that Jace is more decent or Kit but. Personally I tend to forgive Jace because he was the First. There’s a lot of issues with TMI, but it was written in the early 2010s, and while we should be critical, I do think he was a product of the time and of CC being less experienced.

Whereas Kit being… what he is (again I’ve gone into this multiple times) just feels cheap after CC has written so many books.

I agree that him ghosting the Blackthorns (particularly Ty, who again, did not get why he was mad) is his most egregious offense. But I don’t think that Jem believes that the Blackthorns were bad to Kit at all! From what we see in SOBH, he is still very cordial and close to Emma and Julian at the very least, and I never see Jem as one to hold a grudge. Kit may but I doubt Tessa or Jem will.

am I the only 1 who read City of Bones & City of Ashes & thought that Clary would be better w/Simon, while Izzy should be w/Jace?

hear me out!

I should start by admitting that from the 2nd chapter of COB, I disliked Clary. Throughout the series, there are SO many times where her refusal to listen to her allies makes things harder. She yells at Jace a lot in the beginning, despite the fact that he kinda saved her life. But then, all of a sudden, we’re told that her take-no-shit attitude breaks through his façade of arrogance & she’s the 1st girl he’s ever truly loved—as if that’s not dramatic. & then in COHF they fuck (while in an equivalent to Hell), since y’know, all couples have to fuck at least once before they die. & don’t get me started on how they proposed to each other.

Basically, their whole relationship is just a lot of over-the-top shit. Felt like they were both the “saviors” of the Clave, so they were pushed together (mind you, the 1st series takes place in a matter of MONTHS). It’s supercharged puppy love.

ANYWAY…

I guess my main thing is, Clary & Simon knew each other for a long time. Yeah, she somehow didn’t notice his crush on her. But she didn’t have to date him just because she wanted to ignore her feelings for Jace. (Tbh it seems like she was using Simon in that way, but whatever.) I’m a fan of friends-to-lovers, because I think your endgame should also be 1 of your best friends. & weirdly, Clary finally seems to find Simon attractive once he grows out his hair & other girls (Izzy & Maia) show an interest in him. Also, there were numerous occasions where Simon felt intimidated by Izzy, even when she treated him as a part of their group.

I’m sure that the biggest issue people have w/the idea of Izzy/Jace is the fact that they were raised together. Yeah, well, Alec had loved Jace practically since they 1st met, but we focused on Alec’s struggle as a gay young person in a partly homophobic atmosphere (+ the unrequited nature of it all). That parabatai curse from The Dark Artifices wasn’t mentioned (or *cough* created) until that series.

Back to Izzy/Jace. She’s said to be the only 1 who can keep up w/him & unless the popular theory that she’s Valentine’s other child-slash-experiment proves true…that’s fucking awesome. Whips are extremely hard & dangerous to wield, especially when you’re running in heels. So she keeps up w/him in a fight. She also keeps up w/him verbally—Jace is known to be well-read & sassy, but she always has a witty retort prepared for him. & again, for those who focus on them being raised together…1) there were lots of unrelated Shadowhunters living under 1 roof & 2) Jace thought he was related to Clary, but aside from some guilt, they still got all hot & bothered about each other. Lastly, everyone seems to forget that Simon lowkey cheated on Izzy & Maia by secretly dating them both AT THE SAME TIME. Considering Izzy’s relationship w/her dad in TMI, you’d think that’d cross Simon off of her list. Jace, on the other hand, is ridiculously loyal. The only time he ever does anything to hurt his love interest is when he’d rather hurt their feelings than watch them die.

So yeah…

Things that made me angry about Shadowhunters (The Show)

Jace and Clary. I love them in the books but in the series I hate them the most

The whole story about the wedding and Lydia

The Yin Fen storyline. Nothing made me more angry than this storyline. In my opinion, Jem was insulted with it

Jonathan and Valentine were such ridiculous antagonists

That Alec and other shadowhunters were possessed by a demon. Demons cannot possess shadowhunters because of the protection rituals.

Jocelyn's death and Luke and Mary becoming a couple

Clary's voice and the dyed red hair that looked really fake (nothing against McNamara)

Clary and Isabelle as Parabatai. Both have no chemistry
