From Robber Barons to Bezos: Is History Repeating Itself?

Ultra-wealthy elites…Political corruption…Vast inequality…

These problems aren’t new — in the late 1800s they dominated the country during America’s first Gilded Age.

We overcame these abuses back then, and we can do it again.

Mark Twain coined the moniker “The Gilded Age” in his 1873 novel to describe the era in American history characterized by corruption and inequality that was masked by a thin layer of prosperity for a select few.

The end of the 19th century and start of the 20th marked a time of great invention — bustling railroads, telephones, motion pictures, electricity, automobiles — which changed American life forever.

But it was also an era of giant monopolies — oil, railroad, steel, finance — run by a small group of men who had grown rich beyond anything America had ever seen.

They were known as “robber barons” because they ran competitors out of business, exploited workers, charged customers exorbitant prices, and lived like royalty as a result.

Money consumed politics. Robber barons and their lackeys donated bundles of cash to any lawmaker willing to do bidding on their behalf. And when lobbying wasn’t enough, the powerful turned to bribery — resulting in some of the most infamous political scandals in American history.

The gap between the rich and poor in America reached astronomical levels. Large numbers of Americans lived in squalor.

Anti-immigrant sentiment raged, leading to the enactment of racist laws to restrict immigration. And voter suppression, largely aimed at Black men who had recently won the right to vote, was rampant.

The era was also marked by dangerous working conditions. Children often as young as 10, but sometimes younger, worked brutal hours in sweatshops. Workers trying to organize labor unions were attacked and killed.

It seemed as if American capitalism was out of control, and American democracy couldn’t do anything about it because it was bought and paid for by the rich.

But Americans were fed up, and they demanded reform. Many took to the streets in protest.

Investigative journalists, often called “muckrakers” then, helped amplify their cries by exposing what was occurring throughout the country.

And a new generation of political leaders rose to end the abuses.

Politicians like Teddy Roosevelt, who warned that, “a small class of enormously wealthy and economically powerful men, whose chief object is to hold and increase their power,” could destroy American democracy.

After becoming president in 1901, Roosevelt used the Sherman Antitrust Act to break up dozens of powerful corporations, including the giant Northern Securities Company which had come to dominate railroad transportation through a series of mergers.

Seeking to limit the vast fortunes that were creating a new American aristocracy, Congress enacted a progressive income tax through the 16th Amendment, as well as two wealth taxes.

The first wealth tax, in 1916, was the estate tax — a tax on the wealth someone accumulated during their lifetime, paid by the heirs who inherited it. The second tax on wealth, enacted in 1922, was a capital gains tax — a tax on the increased value of assets, paid when those assets were sold.

The reformers of the Gilded Age also stopped corporations from directly giving money to politicians or political candidates.

And then Teddy Roosevelt’s fifth cousin — you may have heard of him — continued the work through his New Deal programs — creating Social Security, unemployment insurance, a 40-hour workweek, and requiring that employers bargain in good faith with labor unions.

But following the death of FDR and the end of World War II, when America was building the largest middle class the world had ever seen — we seemed to forget about the abuses of the Gilded Age.

Now, more than a century later, America has entered a second Gilded Age.

It is also a time of extraordinary invention.

And a time when monopolies are taking over vast swathes of the economy, so we must renew antitrust enforcement to bust up powerful companies.

Now, another generation of robber barons is accumulating unprecedented money and power. So once again, we must tax these exorbitant fortunes.

Wealthy individuals and big corporations are once again paying off lawmakers, sending them billions to conduct their political campaigns, even giving luxurious gifts to Supreme Court justices. So we need to protect our democracy from Big Money, just as we did before.

Voter suppression runs rampant in the states as during the first Gilded Age, making it harder for people of color to participate in what’s left of our democracy. So it’s once again critical to defend and expand voting rights.

Working people are once again being exploited and abused, child labor is returning, unions are busted, the poor are again living in unhealthy conditions, homelessness is on the rise, and the gap between the ultra-rich and everyone else is nearly as large as in the first Gilded Age. So once again we need to protect the rights of workers to organize, invest in social safety nets, and revive guardrails to protect against the abuses of great wealth and power.

The question now is the same as it was at the start of the 20th century: Will we fight for an economy and a democracy that works for all rather than the few?

We’ve done it before. We can — and must — do it again.

re: your thoughts on doctor who 2023 specials

I do absolutely agree with a lot of your critiques, there's a lot more charm in the doctor just walking into an unguarded UNIT shed and stealing one of their like presumably 3 automobiles than the aesthetics of what's going on in the new specials and the way the doctor shifts to being so wholeheartedly for-UNIT (only dissent he gives is a throw away line in the star beast about how they're not always on the same side) feels insanely fucking off even considering something like the the Zygon Invasion where sure he did threaten a lot of people but he still wasn't *taking sides* on it

One place I do disagree with you tho is that honestly it makes sense for unit to have way more power/funding, and I think that the amount of support unit has gotten almost directly correlates to the chronology of interactions the human race has with aliens In my eyes, UNIT starts to get funding after the slitheen shit, where aliens kill a bunch of major politicians and nearly kill the prime-minister-elect, who then decides to start pouring money into an anti-alien army Christmas Invasion then intensifies this, and as aliens begin to appear to be more and more of a threat, the human race leans into their only defense against them

I absolutely agree that the extent to which this military force is glorified by the show is really absurd and feels incredibly wrong, but in-universe it does make sense (to me, at least) for most human characters (not the doctor) to support UNIT and want to give it funding n such

i mean my concern with UNIT appearing more well-funded & equipped & resourced and so on isn't so much that i think it "doesnt make sense", it makes perfect sense (as much as anything in doctor who, a show famous for discarding its own continuity whenever it feels like it, can make sense). the issue isn't that i don't believe UNIT could have an avengers tower, it's that them having it makes them much less sympathetic to me as a viewer, because a poorly resourced slapdash gang of twelve guys with a goofy sign outside their top secret headquarters saying WARNING: TOP SECRET HEAD QUARTERS is both more of an underdog and easier to separate from the real life british military than what UNIT has since become

A day after Jewish college kids found it necessary to barricade themselves inside a library in the center of Greenwich Village while a mob of repugnant terrorist-lovers banged on the locked doors trying to get at them, the message is being broadcast that, on this Sabbath, Jews in Brooklyn had better remain at home.

Stay inside.

Lock the doors.

A pro-Palestinian protest is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday in front of the Brooklyn Museum.

That’s a mile from 770 Eastern Parkway, the headquarters of the largest ultra-Orthodox sect in the world, the Lubavitch Hasidim.

Roughly 20,000 observant Jews live around 770, in the neighborhood called Crown Heights.

“Jews should definitely avoid the area,” an ultra-Orthodox news site called COLlive.com said a “security source” had advised them and the Shmira, the local Jewish self-defense association.

“There’s no intel at this time in which direction the protest will head. Locals should definitely stay away from Eastern Parkway in that area.”

The Jews of Brooklyn feel they are at risk, and — this is the implicit corollary — they cannot be protected.

On the Sabbath, observant Jews do not use electricity or vehicles or screens of any kind.

To pass the time on a Sabbath afternoon, they often go on a long walk.

Not this weekend.

As the security source said, after all, who knows which direction the mob will go?

Better for the Jews to stay inside.

Just as it became a matter of life and death for them to stay inside back in 1991, in the very same neighborhood.

What everyone is afraid of is a repeat of August 1991.

In Crown Heights that year, a three-day anti-Jewish riot followed a tragic automobile accident that took the life of a 7-year-old black child after he was hit by a car being driven by a Hasidic Jew.

Not only were 38 Jews beaten, seven Jewish-owned businesses were looted and burned to the ground.

“Let’s go get a Jew,” a mob chanted, and then they did — they murdered an Australian doctoral student named Yankel Rosenbaum, stabbing him and smashing in his skull.

Additional Details: Currently the only one (besides Foolish, who she told of this) that definitively knows there are multiple Cucuruchos

---Foolish Gamers--- Occupation: Detective, Potential Law Enforcement Background: Begged Asked the Federation for a job in order to obtain benefits and rewards (mainly a shiny badge and a controllable corporeal cloud that functions as an automobile). Officially became part of the Federation upon taking on the task of arresting Tazercraft for the supposed kidnapping of Mr. Mustard the capybara, whom he shares a close relationship with. He continues to work for the benefits, and keeps up the search for Mr. Mustard. Additional Details: Is jealous that Cellbit has more notoriety within Cucurucho's favor and the Federation than he does [see "Cellbit: Additional Details"]. Frequently goes out of his way to gain Cucurucho's favor, in whatever way that may be

---FitMC--- Occupation: Janitor, Plumber Background: Obtained a job at the Federation as a standard janitor/plumber, a seemingly unobtrusive and out-of-the-way occupation, with the objective to gain player data from the Federation in order to deliver it to an outside source. Secretly anti-Federation but acts friendly towards them and keeps from doing anything overtly anarchist in order to maintain his cover. Additional Details: Close with Tazercraft, who are staunch anti-Federationists/anarchists, and has aided them in multiple missions from acquiring classified Federation intel to escaping Federation prisons. Has also received a hug from Cucurucho and is the only one to do so.

---AyPierre--- Occupation: Wine Supplier, Wine Vineyard Operator Background: Was originally a freelance wine maker and distributor (alongside his co-worker Richarlyson) who sold wine to the Federation for the election dinner event. Was later approached by Cucurucho to become a personal wine supplier under the Federation, presumably for future hosted events. The construction of a vineyard was established for Pierre to use for his production, as well as to manage over as the official vineyard operator. Additional Details: Dreamed of a white bear performing brain surgery on him before the plane crash where he supposedly arrived for the first time. Has also committed countless illegal acts against the Federation of which he is rarely held accountable, such as acquiring a piece of a Luzu computer [see "Luzu/Arin: Reason for Interest"]

---El Quackity--- Occupation: Live Show Announcer, N/A Background: Assigned to host the live show announcing the winner of the presidential election behind closed doors. Ran for this election before he was eliminated via assassination. Server members heavily speculated that El Quackity ran as president as a Federation pawn, though this has yet to be proven. Is part of the Federation's experiments regarding specimen eggs, and maintains access to player data most other members are not aware exists [see "FitMC: Background"]. Additional Details: Speculated to have been a clone of Quackity put into the server by the Federation after their abduction of Quackity, as he acts differently, held gaps in memories that Quackity should have known, had strange skin textures around the frame of his face, and had "El" in his name.

---Forever Player--- Reason for Interest: Current President of Quesadilla Island. Works with Cucurucho to utilize all powers granted to the role of presidency by the Federation. Yet to see the full extent in which this role will provide in terms of power to the president and his relationship with the Federation. Currently, the President is working on an animal conservatory on behalf of the Federation, and has already established certain mods such as the Cosmetics Mod. Additional Details: Suspected of having a closer relationship to Cucurucho than a simply professional one by certain island members; unclear of the accuracy of this claim. Has plans to build a prison and establish an active voting system.

---Tazercraft--- Reason for Interest: Guilty of frequently committing illegal acts (destroying Federation projects using the C.A.R.L.A. world eater, illegally traveling into the Nether using a previously inactive Federation-owned Nether portal, etc.) Tazercraft were arrested by Detective Gamers on behalf of the Federation [see "Foolish Gamers: Background"] and imprisoned in the official Federation jail, of which they escaped along with Federation employee "Walter Bob" after killing one of the prison guards. Additional Details: The surviving prison guard abducted "Walter Bob" after the escape, as well as Pac of Tazercraft. Though fellow Tazercraftian Mike was able to free him, the status of "Walter Bob" remains unknown. Unclear if the actions of the guard were carried out on official Federation orders or as a personal vendetta against Tazercraft for the loss of their coworker at Mike's hands.

---Maximus--- Reason for Interest: Underwent a medical examination by Cucurucho following a belief of pregnancy; was found to have been infected with a deadly parasitic entity. Following this discovery, subject was given emergency surgery to have the parasite removed, of which was proclaimed to be a success by the head surgeon (Cucurucho). However, subject later found a code infection in his leg, of which only his surgeon is aware of currently. Additional Details: Co-founder and co-leader of the Ordo Theoritas, an anti-Federation conspiracy group of which the Federation has been made aware of in terms of the subject's involvement. Previously arrested and imprisoned for one day by the Federation after committing illegal acts. Also involved in an incident where he sought out the Angel in order to revive his dead egg Trump, before he was given an ultimatum by the Federation that ceased him from receiving the Angel's help.

---Roier--- Reason for Interest: One of the first persons to befriend Cucurucho. Proof of Cucurucho's incompetency revealed by their relationship to Roier, and since measures have been taken to ensure Cucurucho has and will always achieve absolute perfection. Additional Details: Continues to summon Cucurucho, and is determined to understand their nature as well as the changes made to them.

---Felps--- Reason for Interest: One of the first persons to befriend Cucurucho. Initially taken by them and kept in cryogenic containment for roughly one month as part of a potential deal to gain lives for his son Richarlyson. Was awakened and rescued by the other island members alongside family member Cellbit, who had also been abducted in his search for Felps. Upon rescue, both subject and his companion were found to have strange markings on their body, Felps having one on his arm. No overt effects have come from these physical changes as of yet. Additional Details: After his abduction, subject has harbored resentment towards Cucurucho and the Federation

---Quackity--- Reason for Interest: Subject to unknown experimentation by the Federation that resulted in a severe loss of memory (short and long term), an inability to properly recognize the physical appearance of the eggs, and an inability to recognize or create proper writing. Upon release, has since only spoken in Spanish (despite being bilingual) and has been given writing lessons by Cucurucho, who carried out the initial experimentation. Additional Details: Previously attempted to establish deals with Cucurucho in order to revive his deceased egg Tilín; unclear if these talks yielded any results.

---Baghera Jones--- Reason for Interest: Former subject of experimentation and torture at the hands of the Federation. Was under Federation custody since childhood until she escaped using a presumably make-shift boat. Holds no memory of her past regarding the Federation, and has only vague memories of knowing her fellow French-speakers before arrival on the island. Current status unknown. Additional Details: Was made aware of this knowledge by following a trail leading to an abandoned building with a diary signed by herself sometime prior.

---The Angel and the Demon--- Reason for Interest: Divine entities descended by the gods known for producing and distributing illegal items to the islanders. Holds the ability to perform resurrections on deceased eggs. Currently unable to be contained or withheld by the Federation. More information is needed before actions may be taken. Additional Details: The Angel was once involved in an indirect conflict regarding the Federation and the resurrection of the deceased egg Trump [see "Maximus: Additional Details"] in which it was made clear the Federation wished for the Angel and Demon to have as little involvement as possible with the Federation's plans.

---Luzu/Arin--- Reason for Interest: AI entity residing within the body of Luzu. Fronts Luzu's body during moments of Luzu being unconscious (sleep, fainting, etc.) Source behind "Luzu computers" that occasionally appear around the server. Federation has dubbed it illegal to desecrate and/or steal resources from these computers as they contain illegal Create items. Full extent of the relationship between the Federation and the Luzu computers is unknown. Additional Details: Arin occasionally interacts with the island inhabitants via chat message to leave cryptic messages in binary, of which is their only supposed way of written communication. They have warned of "a door opening" among other concerning matters.

---Binary Codes--- Reason for Interest: Rogue AI entities that target the island inhabitants and their eggs. Held a predominant focus on attacking any egg with two lives until they were down to one. Have been proven to be capable of learning from past instances, as well as cloaking their appearance into that of an egg. Federation continues to ignore their existence. Additional Details: Rumors have declared the Binary codes to have been creations of the Federation that went rogue and now attack supposed other Federation creations (the eggs). Contained powerful weaponry in the form of the CPV2 Shield, which has infinite durability and is the only known item immune to the Code Breaker Sword, as well as the pieces of the aforementioned Code Breaker; these items were taken from certain Binary Codes after a loss in combat to Etoiles, the current only island resident to wield such equipment.

So we know Isadora & Duncan Quagmire are named after the dancer Isadoda Duncan because she died tragically; but she also had a pretty unfortunate life. Let me just summarize some of her story for you:

- her father, Joseph Charles Duncan, embezzling funds, leading to

- divorce of her parents, (well, also the fact that Joseph wasn't faithful) which lead to

- the family being in poverty (side point, there were three siblings, like the three siblings in most of the VFD families)

- Joseph and his third wife (sketchy) and his daughter with said wife DYING IN A BOAT ACCIDENT WHEN IT CRASHED INTO ROCKS UNDER MYSTERIOUS CIRCUMSTANCES (???!!!!) and is considered the "greatest disaster in the history of the Atlantic Transport Line to date". Oh and here's a picture of the MASS GRAVE

Wow okay anyway

- this isn't exactly "unfortunate" but she dropped out of school at 10

- she worked with Augustin Daly's theater but didn't enjoy it due to her free-spirited nature, and was thoroughly unhappy in America

- she moved to London (which is an unfortunate event alone) and was quite successful (girl's getting a break) but she didn't like touring or contracts because of the commercialism

- therefore she opens a school in Germany to teach dance, adopts six girls (good for her ig) and calls them the "Isadorables" (WHAT) and also they're her protégés; cute but then she tries opening a school but it closes due to WORLD WAR I

- moves to the United States but she plans to leave, narrowly avoids dying at sea like her dad (ok I'm not kidding; she was going to go on the RMS Lusitania, which was TORPEDOED BY THE GERMANS AND HELPED LEAD AMERICA INTO THE WAR, this is all very ironic because she considered the sea inspiration for her dancing)

- she ended up moving to SOVIET RUSSIA which was not smart bc they didn't support her work like they promised. She had established a school so she left it to one of her daughters/protégés/Isadorables

- oh, somewhere during all this, she has three biological children to three different husbands - THE FIRST TWO PROCEEDED TO DROWN (drown???? Oh my gosh this is a pattern) because their nanny accidentally (?) drove her car into the RIVER SEINE.

-with the first two children dead, Isadora is so desperate for another that she BEGS A STRANGER to get her pregnant. This baby also DIES shortly after birth

- marries a poet, then divorces him soon after (this poet btw, Sergei Yesenin, had a bunch of affairs, got arrested a bunch of times, was accused of anti-semetism, and then committed suicide-by-hanging in a hotel room. Wild.)

- okay so at this point Isadora's going through serious depression. Her three biological children are dead and she feels like she's lost some of the Isadorables to old men, and so her performances are getting more scarce.

- her reputation is tarnished by being drunk in public, her financial struggles, and her now-scandalous love life. She spends the years working on her autobiography (which only gets published posthumously) supported by her few remaining friends and family

- here's the part you've all been waiting for: Isadora Duncan dies on September 14, 1927 at the age of 50. Her silk scarf gets caught in the wheel of the automobile she was riding in, right in front of the person who had given the scarf to her as a gift. Apparently, she was flung out out of the window and died on brutal impact with the ground, almost decapitated by the scarf.

Hesse found himself very much at odds with the new German reality in the years following the first World War. Believing the decline of the West was ‘fated, irreversible, and complete’, Hesse saw an emerging age of catastrophes and nihilism. Soon, he felt, ‘all Western Europe would succumb to wars, revolutions, and moral insanity’ (p. 63).

Proclaiming himself an enemy of the modern world, he became one of the fiercest anti-modernists of the decade. Whatever belonged to modernity, whether it was the automobile, modern architecture, mass-production, or the prosperity of the 1920’s, received short shrift in his writings. Europe, he said, was on the threshold of a dehumanized “machine-culture” that could benefit only the masses who were too stupid to see how cheap and ugly modern life really was. Both present and future could, on this view, offer mankind nothing but a collectivized existence devoid of spirit. And the prospect filled Hesse with such rage that at times he wished to see modern Europe annihilated by machines run amuck or in a second world war.

so looking at the california hsr, would a state building hsr through force account be built faster since you don't have to contract everything out?

Using force account (i.e, direct hiring) would be faster than contracting, but the most significant difference would likely be that it would be much cheaper (which has an impact on speed, because cost overruns and underfinancing has been an issue for building out the California HSR system) than contracting.

However, my understanding is that the two biggest issues that have been responsible for slowing down the build-out of the California HSR system is:

the difficulty of acquiring the land and right-of-ways needed for the route, due in no small part to opposition from the Union Pacific railroad and local landowners.

extensive litigation from self-described environmentalist anti-development groups abusing the CEQA process to block/death-by-a-thousand-cuts a green project aimed at reducing C02 emissions from automobiles and by encouraging sustainable transit-oriented development over suburban sprawl.

So force account would help, but it would not be a panacea for the difficulties that CAHSR has had to labor under lo these many years.

The most male socialised thing I ever had to witness was men talking about the first Action Comic and Superman's first appereance and how it's "anti-industrialism" but missing one crucial point. Superman is introduced as "Hero of The Oppressed" and only saves women through the whole issue. (Which alone is a daring step to take but let’s get through it)

At first, he helps a woman find justice while she was framed for a crime she didn’t commit and was even kidnapped for that. Then he beats up a wife beater who has clear power over her. Even stating that he’s not fighting against a woman anymore. (Which could be misogyny in itself but I will just interpret it like superman means that the wife beater sees his wife as weak and now has to face someone who isn’t socially pressured and has the power to fight back.) At last, Clark goes out with Lois Lane, stood him up because he didn’t defend her from creeps, who also then kidnapp her and superman saves her. Where the iconic cover comes in play smashing the automobile into bits of the people who again where holding power over Lois as a woman and felt like they had the right to use her for themselves. (Yk, the one thing that is the symbol for industrial change and therefore a sign for capitalism which is also a power system oppressing workers.)

How do you miss that??? Like genuinely asking?? Even if it’s wonky in itself with it‘s approach to help the oppressed minority in question but pls.

Jason Slaughter, of the excellent "Not Just Bikes" YouTube channel and "The Urbanist Agenda" podcast, just dropped an episode of the latter and it completely ignored the backlash he's gotten lately, from urbanists in the US and Canada, about his "just give up and move somewhere where cars aren't mandatory" attitude lately. But I think, accidentally or not, he explained it:

He's been hit by a car while walking in a crosswalk, with the light. And he and his wife lost a good friend who died, because the car that hit her, where she was legally allowed to be, was a giant SUV.

I also have been hit by a car, while up on the sidewalk. My second orthopedic surgeon looked at the damage to my knees and was able to tap exactly the spot where the bumper hit me, and even after bilateral knee replacement I'll never walk as well as I used to be able to. (After two surgeries, ten months' of expert physical therapy, and three years in the gym I can walk up to a mile, but it'll never not hurt.)

And I've buried not one but two friends who were run over by cars. I only literally just, in the last year, found out how uncommon that experience is, I thought that by the time you were a grown-ass adult my age, everybody in the US, Canada, or Australia knew someone who'd been killed by a car, or at least permanently injured. And looking back on it, I begin to understand in hindsight just how much more anti-automobile radical I got each time.

From where I sit (or occasionally stand or walk), the rest of y'all are just whistling past the graveyard, full of stories about why it won't happen to you and still just accepting the fact that you live and work in places you won't let your kids walk as if that had always been normal.

1976-Joachim Peiper

Joachim Peiper (30 January 1915 – 14 July 1976) was a German Schutzstaffel (SS) officer and war criminal convicted for the Malmedy massacre of U.S. Army prisoners of war (POWs). During the Second World War in Europe, Peiper served as personal adjutant to Heinrich Himmler, leader of the SS, and as a tank commander in the Waffen-SS. Peiper personified Nazi ideology as a purportedly ruthless glory-hound commander who was indifferent to the combat casualties of Battle Group Peiper, and who encouraged, expected, and tolerated war crimes by his Waffen-SS soldiers.

As adjutant to Himmler, Peiper witnessed the SS implement the Holocaust with ethnic cleansing and genocide of Jews in Eastern Europe; facts that he obfuscated and denied in the post–War period. As a tank commander, Peiper served in the 1st SS Panzer Division Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler (LSSAH) in the Eastern Front and in the Western Front, first as a battalion commander and then as a regimental commander. Peiper fought in the Third Battle of Kharkov and in the Battle of the Bulge, from which battles his eponymous battle group – Kampfgruppe Peiper – became notorious for committing war crimes against civilians and PoWs.

In the Malmedy Massacre Trial, the U.S. military tribunal established Peiper's command responsibility for the Malmedy massacre (1944) and sentenced him to death, which later was commuted to life in prison, then 35 years. In Italy, Peiper was accused of having committed the Boves massacre (1943); that investigation ended for lack of war-crime evidence that Peiper ordered the summary killing of Italian civilians.

Upon release from prison, Peiper worked for the Porsche and Volkswagen automobile companies and later moved to France, where he worked as a freelance translator. Throughout his post-war life, Peiper was very active in the social network of ex–SS men centred upon the right-wing organisation HIAG (Mutual Aid Association of Former Members of the Waffen-SS).

In 1972, Joachim and Sigurd Peiper moved to Traves, Haute-Saône, in eastern France, where he owned a house. Under the pseudonym "Rainer Buschmann", Peiper worked as a self-employed English-to-German translator for the German publisher Stuttgarter MotorBuch Verlag, translating books of military history.[27] Despite his biography and working pseudonymously, they lived under his true, German name, "Joachim Peiper", and soon attracted the notice of anti-fascists.

The confirmation of Peiper's Nazi identity and presence in France attracted journalists to whom Peiper readily gave interviews, wherein he claimed that he was a victim of Communist harassment due to his role in the war. In an interview (J’ai payé "I Already Have Paid"), Peiper said he was an innocent man who had paid for his war crimes (referring to the Malmedy massacre) with twelve years of prison. He said he was innocent of the earlier Boves massacre war crime in Italy. He also said "In 1940, French people weren't brave, that's why I'm here". These insulting remarks angered the press and residents. It was reported that he and his wife left France and moved to the German Federal Republic due to ongoing death threats.

On Bastille Day 14 July 1976, French anti-Nazis attacked and torched Peiper's house in Traves. When the fire was extinguished, firefighters found the charred remains of a man holding a pistol and a .22 calibre rifle, as if defending himself.[128] The arson investigators determined that person had died from smoke inhalation. The anti-Nazi political group The Avengers claimed responsibility for the arson that killed Peiper; nonetheless, because of the destruction caused by the arson, the French police authorities remained unconvinced that Joachim Peiper was the person found.

one thing i've found annoying about the last few years is like. yes, individual actions don't impact anything and yes most pollution comes from 7 dudes and we know their addresses. but they're not captain planet villains. they're not polluting for fun. they're polluting because it is profitable, and that's where your individual choices come in!

like i know vegans and vegetarians can be annoying (though tbh people who think vegans and vegetarians are annoying are often more annoying. I've encountered a lot more defensive paleo people than annoying vegans) but cutting down your meat intake is legitimately one of the things you can do that can help the planet. cutting down on your use of single use plastics or trying to use more sustainable stuff, not persuing fast fashion, eating more locally, these can all be really easy ways to slightly improve the world through individual actions.

and i feel like any time people point this out there's a lot of defensiveness-- what about people who need x, y, z-- and it's unnecessary. i was a vegetarian for like 15 years and stopped being one partially because i was iron deficient like every time i got blood work done. but i still try not to eat a lot of red meat. I'm not out here saying "if you don't do this you're bad" but "you should try not to do this, if you can." the "if you can" is important! and it can encompass "not feeling like it"-- there is no moral judgement.

and in this it's more about the right, but I've found it useful to start recognizing in myself. how much of the perceived arrogance of virtue signalling or veganism or x, y, z,

moralizing individual choices leads to people getting reactive when their own individual choices are brought into question (as any vaguely anti-makeup post on this website shows). but individual actions are what make up greater changes. consumer pressure and preference has led to cheaper cars being in high demand and fuel economy being something that automobile manufacturers are forced to consider, more than BIGGEST TRUCK

it seems overwhelming. it seems unfair to have to restrict yourself when you know people sweeping across the world are taking private jets all over. but you don't have to restrict yourself completely: you don't have to live like an ascetic monk. but getting into better, more sustainable habits can be fun and rewarding-- and often, in the long term, cheaper. If you want more outfits, it's way more fun to do goodwill clothing hauls and learn to visibly fix your clothing. when i was at my brokest, i basically lived a vegan diet (though if i have to see rice and beans again i might die). recycle cans at a center that gives you money back and use it to play the lottery or treat yourself. look up farm shares in your area and support local farms.

there is no ethical consumption after late capitalism: consumption by itself isn't activism, and your individual actions don't change anything. These are all true: but they cannot be mantras to let yourself make the world worse.

Chapter 3. Economy

Who will take out the trash?

If everyone is free to work as they choose, who will take out the trash or perform other undesirable jobs? Fortunately, in a localized, anti-capitalist economy, we could not externalize, or hide, the costs of our lifestyle by paying someone else to clean up after us. We would have to pay for the consequences of all our own actions — rather than paying China to take our toxic waste, for example. If a necessary service like garbage disposal were being neglected, the community would quickly notice and have to decide how to handle the problem. People could agree to reward such work with small perks — nothing that translates into power or authority, but something like getting to be first in line when exotic goods come into town, receiving a massage or a cake or simply the recognition and gratitude for being a stand-up member of the community. Ultimately, in a cooperative society, having a good reputation and being seen by your peers as responsible are more compelling than any material incentives.

Or the community could decide that everyone should involve themselves in these tasks on a rotating basis. An activity like garbage collection does not have to define anyone’s “career” in an anti-capitalist economy. Necessary tasks no one wants to perform should be shared by everyone. So instead of a few people having to sort through garbage their entire lives, everyone who was physically able would have to do it for just a couple hours each month.

The Christiania “free state” is a quarter in Copenhagen, Denmark, that has been squatted since 1971. Its 850 inhabitants are autonomous within their 85 acres. They have been taking out their own trash for over thirty years. The fact that they receive about one million visitors a year makes their achievement all the more impressive. The streets, buildings, restaurants, public toilets, and public showers are all reasonably clean — especially for hippies! The body of water that runs through Christiania is not the cleanest, but considering that Christiania is tree-covered and automobile free one suspects most of the pollution comes from the surrounding city that shares the waterway.

Residents have built dozens of the houses now standing in Christiania using innovative eco-designs. They also use:

solar power, wind power, composting and a whole host of other eco-friendly innovations. Different people interviewed had different conceptions of how Christiania was kept clean, suggesting a sort of dual system. A newcomer said that you cleaned up after yourself, and when you felt like doing some extra picking up, you did. An old-time resident who was more involved in decision-making explained there was a garbage committee, answerable to the “Common Meeting,” responsible for the bottom-line of keeping Christiania clean, though clearly voluntary assistance and cleanliness by all the residents was the first line of defense.
