Inside: abandoned mining village ‘Colonna’ (2.425 m asl, the highest iron mine in Europe). Cogne Valley, Italy.

The first historical information of the magnetite deposits exploitation dates back to 1432. In 1910, construction began on the mining village of Colonna, which once housed around 400 workers and was a state-of-the-art art facility with a church, cinema, canteen and even one of the first X-ray machines in the infirmary.

Here are some of the rooms in the ostentatious Sarre Castle in the Aosta Valley.

Built in 1710 on the ruins of a fortress mentioned as early as 1242, having passed through various hands, the property was purchased by the King of Italy Victor Emanuel II, who renovated it and used it during hunting expeditions in Val d’Aosta.

The royal castle of Sarre, after becoming the private property of the Savoys, was used as their headquarters for expeditions in the valleys of Cogne, Rhêmes and Valsavarenche. As you can see, he hunted chamois, ibex and other game almost to extinction.

I think this is why having too much money ruins you.

I thought the grounds were unimaginative. I mean give me two years with that plot of land and you will see a stunning garden. The views of the mountains form a unique backdrop that deserves better than just four rectangles of lawn.

Wasn’t into the thousands of dead animal skulls and horns…but I can’t say it wasn’t unique.

Thesis diary #51

My mood has improved a bit since yesterday but for some reason I am not at my best yet. Today I also changed my study plans randomly, and instead of finishing fully the second chapter of my thesis I decided to start working right away on the third chapter after having completed the new draft. I have two reasons for this, the first one being that I didn't feel focused enough to reread the new version of the second chapter, and the second one is that since I had a very clear idea of what I had written I was sure that going right away into the third chapter I had more chances to make to writing flow better. So today was a mostly writing day, and tomorrow I'll hopefully have enough energy and focus to reread everything and fix the last couple if things. I think I can be done with both chapters by the end of the week so that I can send them to my professor as I work on the conclusion of the thesis. Surely I'll try to be done with both of them in the next couple of days.

Productive things I did today:

Finished the first part of work for the new version of the second chapter of my thesis

Started working on the third chapter

Finally finished the crochet scarf I was making for my brother

Read quite a bit

Made some new spreads in my reading journal

Self care things I did today:

Read first thing in the morning

Crochet while listening to an audiobook (at this moment in my life this is the best hobby possible. I am avoiding digital screens, and my brain gets so much rest from this combination of activities)

Changed my plans according to what I felt like doing instead of forcing myself to follow the first plan I had created

📖: Hide by Kiersten White (I have an idea of where this book is going. Actually I am pretty sure I have figured it out, I am not sure if I'll be happy or disappointed when I'll find out if I'm right), and The Green Mile by Stephen King.

you know how when suzuran wanted to sew a specter doll to gift it to the mysterious operator no one knew about, the one who helped sewed it for her was aosta? and then later when gladiia wanted an outfit made for laurentina to help her feel herself again, she had it tailored by rhodes island? and the one popular tailor (a very rare occurence in rhodes island) is, again, aosta?

imagining this guy making a nun doll for some person he has never fucking seen in his life and then years later a very tall very scary woman comes to him and asks him to sew an outfit for this same person called “specter” except this time it’s not a nun outfit, it’s some kind of pirate, multi-layered skirt with a bunch of belts and shit, and this very scary woman is VERY particular about how the dress looks like and how he must forsake all his other projects to make this outfit on time or else the big scary woman will make him regret it. this specter is clearly different from the specter doll he made because damn, does this specter seem to have a personality.

now imagine a few weeks later there’s another scary woman with really sharp teeth wearing the very outfit he made constantly asking him about his handicrafts and creations, and the woman kinda sorta is taunting him for not knowing about sculpting and he’s like wait. is this the same specter suzurina and the big scary woman talked about because she’s nothing like either of those descriptions. she’s really fucking annoying. and he’s got to prove to her that he can, in fact, sculpt if he wants to and that’s how laurentina gets a competitive kid in rhodes island into sculpting.
