if escape rooms as team building exercises became popular im not sure if id be more excited or terrified
#if it isnt already anyway.. i can see it happening as a school frosh thing. idk if it would catch on as a workplace thing#i kind of find the concept of being locked in with strangers and working to find a way out weirdly exhilarating though#at least compared to icebreakers cause i dont have to spend 10 minutes racking my brain for something to blurt out abt myself#as a bonus u could like. put people into groups and give prizes to whoever escapes first second third etc. apparently they also do themed#escape rooms.. maybe let people pick a theme? or voluntary sign up? actually this would be really fun for smth like a blind friend date#although if i found out i was locked in a room with an online friend id be too excited to actually escape LOL#ive never done an escape room before so sadly i cant speak from experience. its like up there on things i want to try next to rug tufting#workshop and visiting new art exhibits or conventions. i seriously need to get out more if it wasnt for the horrors <- school and anxiety#i was planning to invite cass to a drop-in art workshop in town but neither of us could go bc typography is making us go thru hell and back#AND THEY HAD A BUTTON MACHINE TOO#im nostalgic bc i miss working in groups and not being awkward abt it or worrying abt schedule conflicts#i realized that i learn best in groups and its a little corny but i like sharing ideas and talking through a problem#in elementary i could just sit down with friends for review and come out of it energized *and* more familiar with the material#and i could technically still do it now. but as adults we're more picky abt who we work with on top of being way more busy outside school#maybe im lonely. im shy and grew up not talking to ppl unless i absolutely have to so its hard to make friends on my own i guess#only thing getting me thru it is telling myself that humans like helping and that my cringe is overblown in my head. but its hard#hence the escape rooms. i have been able to talk to 2(!!) people though!! mostly abt school stuff but im glad to be on friendly terms#i dont really know how to be happy these days cause im constantly scaring myself abt my portfolio and finding places to work#not being ambitious is part of not wanting to put energy into something that wont work out while also not having the passion to do literall#anything else.. i should probably talk to my counsellor ugh#yapping

The first chapter of purify our misfit ways is now up on AO3, encompassing almost all the content posted to tumblr.
I’ve edited and expanded it a bit more heavily than usual, because I wrote a lot of the first draft while exhausted and miserably sipping an overpriced smoothie while killing six hours in my least favorite airport. Still sort of trying to figure out what I’m doing with this fic, so I may go back and edit it further, but I think it’s hit some kind of minimum threshold of acceptability and I basically wanted to overwrite the tumblr draft.

Summer Reading, acryl gouache on hot pressed paper.
Tumblr media
Treated myself to a Holbein acryl gouache set. I’m just so in love with the colors. This has been in my wishlist since last Christmas and finally I purchased it!! I hope that this will inspire me to create cozy illustrations and also hopefully settle on a go-to color palette. I’m still a newbie with acryl gouache even though I did florals with them before. I need to relearn how to choose colors to achieve the cozy peaceful vibe I want to convey in my current paintings.
First impressions on the Holbein acryl gouache set (collab with artist Rebecca Green) :
- very quick to dry. I have to rethink how to diy my stay-wet palette so I can keep the paints moist. Right now, I only squeeze very little of the paint because I’m afraid to have them dry out when I need to do something else.
- super pigmented, a little goes a long way so the 20ml tubes are a good invested for the price. I got it for around 2000 pesos (incl shipping) whereas when you buy each tube it’s around 250 pesos. Also the colors here are hard to find and almost out of stock everywhere. It doesn’t have the basic white or black but I still have those (Turner Paint) so that will work for me.
- I love the ash yellow and ash blue colors. I feel like they will be essential in creating that cozy desaturated look I’m trying to achieve. I think it’s also a big difficult to mix these shades so glad they are part of the set.
- The coral red and mustard are the brighter colors in the palette. To offset the other colors. I love them.
Tumblr media
Things to improve on: planning the base color application, desaturating colors, shadows. Probably will do a smaller piece too.

A new tool lets artists add invisible changes to the pixels in their art before they upload it online so that if it’s scraped into an AI training set, it can cause the resulting model to break in chaotic and unpredictable ways.
The tool, called Nightshade, is intended as a way to fight back against AI companies that use artists’ work to train their models without the creator’s permission. Using it to “poison” this training data could damage future iterations of image-generating AI models, such as DALL-E, Midjourney, and Stable Diffusion, by rendering some of their outputs useless—dogs become cats, cars become cows, and so forth. MIT Technology Review got an exclusive preview of the research, which has been submitted for peer review at computer security conference Usenix.
AI companies such as OpenAI, Meta, Google, and Stability AI are facing a slew of lawsuits from artists who claim that their copyrighted material and personal information was scraped without consent or compensation. Ben Zhao, a professor at the University of Chicago, who led the team that created Nightshade, says the hope is that it will help tip the power balance back from AI companies towards artists, by creating a powerful deterrent against disrespecting artists’ copyright and intellectual property. Meta, Google, Stability AI, and OpenAI did not respond to MIT Technology Review’s request for comment on how they might respond.
Zhao’s team also developed Glaze, a tool that allows artists to “mask” their own personal style to prevent it from being scraped by AI companies. It works in a similar way to Nightshade: by changing the pixels of images in subtle ways that are invisible to the human eye but manipulate machine-learning models to interpret the image as something different from what it actually shows.

GUYS THEYRE MAKING AN OFFICIAL CROSSOVER COMIC. THIS IS NOT A FUCKING DRILL.
Tumblr media
ISSUE 13 OF SATURDAY MORNING ADVENTURES DROPPING IN JUNE.
updates below the cut —>
UPDATE #1:
Hiya! since this is blowing up just thought i’d stick this on here. I got this info from a YT community post from teddygamingreview, a smaller channel knee deep in the comics side of the tmnt franchise that i’ve been following for a while. From what i understand this is just teaser/promo material so there’s not a whole lot of other info out yet. Thats all, cowa-fuckin-bunga dudes
UPDATE #2:
TEDDYGAMING REVIEWS CAME IN CLUTCH ONCE AGAIN WITH A BREAKDOWN VIDEO
(Most important new info takeaway that wasn’t already laid out in the previous post, in case you don’t got time to watch right now: the issue after this has some villains from the 2012 series on the cover art, implying that whatever multiverse crossover shenanigans are going on might bleed into he next issue, at least to some extent?)

UPDATE #3:
THIS ONES TOO BIG SO I MADE A SEPARATE POST FOR IT, LINK HERE:

Portfolio advice, from a lead who hires Concept Artists
(This was originally a twitter thread I wrote before the site self imolated, hense it's strange structure.) I wrote this after a weekend of portfolio reviews - 1. Like a maths exam, please please show your working. I want to see thumbs options, mid options and of course a final design.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
2. Arrange your portfolio, I don't want to bounce about between subject matter and pipeline. Your portfolio's narrative should be as strong as your work... 3. Please make worlds that excite the viewer, make them want to go in and explore them, explain to them the interesting parts of the town, or the way the character's hat unfolds. How will this draw the viewer in? 4. As I've said before the majority of your project work is explanatory not mood, make sure your portfolio contains explanatory work. Explained here -
Tumblr media
5. A lot of beautiful post apocolyptic paintings, , but 80% of realistic games and film, we just give the environment artists photo ref, they are capable artists in their own right. Different work in stylised where you do need to create rules for how things can be translated. 6. Production art contains call out sheets, material references and flat graphics. This doesn't have to be your final image, but it should support it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
7. Design characters on a swatch(es) of the environment they will be viewed in. Not on white. I make swatch backgrounds from screenshots, it avoids assumptions that damage readability. 8. Reverse of this, put people in your environments, show me the scale.
9. It's not a deal breaker for a review, but if you intend to get a job, please show me your work on a screen larger than a smartphone (print outs probably the cheapest option with the best battery life). 10. Please have your contact details clearly visible, and by that I mean email address, I will not pass your social media contact on, I cannot input your form into my tracking system. EMAIL ADDRESS emblazoned and bake it in, sometimes recruiters do funky stuff to pdfs
11. Your portfolio will never feel done, not to you anyway. You will have learnt from your latest pieces and want to apply it to older work. But we know art is a journey. Send your portfolio anyway. I've been in the industry 10+ years and my portfolio is still not 'finished'. 12. If you are applying to an environment centric Concept Art position then please vary your times of day! Golden hour is cool but show me some happy sunny days, looming overcast days, what about at night? Vary your weather too! Sunny snowy day? Rainy Spring day? Stormy night?
13. If you are applying for a character centric Concept Art role then please ensure your portfolio shows a variety of body types and ethnicities. 14. Designing characters for games? Please show back views and feet (!) Many potfolios contain only front views. This is a problem because:
You haven't shown you are considering the design from all angles.
In many games rear view is the main view.
Stop cropping feet.
15. If you are entry / graduating and looking at Portfolios to compare content and standard of yr own work too, look at hired grad/junior artists as opposed to seniors Seniors and leads often have old or personal work in their portfolio which isnt representative of the day job. 16a. Show clearly the intended use case for your Concept Art. Mention the game type in the description. Are these player character designs for a 3rd person adventure game? Then more back views please. Bonus points for diagetic ways of showing health / equipment / role etc.
16b. Are these designs for an FPS? Then really the player view of the gun needs to sell the player style/ choices, in an FPS your weapons are almost your character. Are these world designs? What's the view distance? For an RTS your shapes need to read from above & a distance. 16c. The lack of clarification means I am judging the design in isolation, which both harms the design (you might be considering the backview of a char as the main adventure character.) Or an NPC, their waist up expressions may be important for conveying exposition and mechanics.
16d. Concept art is not separate from gameplay, great concept art serves the game team before it is a good illustration.
17. Play games. A variety of games. Think about them. IMO to be a good concept artist you need to understand the common language & references used by your peers. Also understand the principles and common language your audience are used to. FPS design rules are v.diff from RTS.
18. There are many skills that are needed in concept art, please show them. For example: Graphic design - logos, liveries, typographic use etc. VFX concepts - Abilities, Ambience, motion concepts. Architectural knowledge - How buildings are built! & more but I'm out of space :O

The Last Stand Exam
This file documents the questions administered to the adventuring party known as the Bad Kids during their Last Standard Exam, in their junior year at the Aguefort Adventuring Academy. This assessment was produced from a variety of class materials relevant to the curriculum of the Aguefort Adventuring Academy, as submitted to the principal Arthur Aguefort prior to the start of the school year. This list is accompanied by documentation of the creatures the party known as the Bad Kids was required to face as part of the exam.
The exam is graded out of 100 points; the scoring involves the students correctly answering the questions in the appropriate time interval as well as their heroic last stands. The students are expected to simultaneously fight off a horde of creatures and participate in the examination equally; each student in this party must answer two of the twelve questions.
Neither exam aids, nor outside interference are permitted during the examination period--this excludes clerical divine intervention, as appropriately performed by a member of the party in question. By standard, the proctor must be protected--death of the proctor results in a 30 point score reduction regardless of circumstance.
By Solisian School District Standards, this party reports excellent grades and a high level of competency with regard to independent adventuring.* They were allotted a grace period prior to exam initiation for preparatory spellcasting and review of the exam parameters. Based on prior academic achievement**, the students were allowed two chances to defer a question or utilize previous materials in their response. Questions where these materials were used will be marked with a **.
Exam Proctor: Gavin Pundle
Assisting Cleric: Buddy Dawn
Party Members:
Adaine Abernant | Wizard
Kristen Applebees | Cleric
Figueroth Faeth | Bard / Paladin / Warlock / "Barbarian"
Riz Gukgak | Rogue

Question: Please write a 300 word essay arguing for a proposed improvement at the aguefort Adventuring Academy in the space provided below.
Solution: We believe a greater amount of our grade should come from the actual good we do in the world. Given the number of times our adventuring party have been put in a situation where the actual fate of our very existence has hung in the balance, it seems only fitting that the result of our efforts impact our academic study. Considering the ultimate goal is to become adventurers, it makes the most sense that actual application of our skills would be most important. If actual adventuring doesn't show our skills, what will? No matter how many class I take, it won't make me a better bard or fighter. I, Fabian Seacaster, son of the great Bill Seacaster, privateer, not pirate... (108)**

Anne Tallentire - Material Distance
Have you ever wanted to go to an art show that looked like the Ikea backrooms? Well, look no further than Material Distance, a current exhibition displayed at John Hansard Gallery in Southampton. Tallentire asks that you as an audience enter the gallery spaces with an open mind. A way in which you can rethink the spaces and environment that we spend our time in. What if we were to be placed into an area that is large, but still somehow manages to make you feel claustrophobic and small all at the same time?
Tumblr media
Walking into this gallery, I feel like I am in a space that I shouldn't be in. The kind of space I make up when I'm deeply dreaming, as I am being chased around a backroom by someone. Sometimes it's somebody I know from my past and other times, it's someone who is made up. Somebody that is judging me. We weave through awkward components of items, laying around in the backroom space, trying to stop me from being able to escape. It is the type of space where background music begins to play, I can't figure out what the words are, but I can hear the distorted music as I run.
Lag III (right of the image above) is a stack of insulation boards, used to explain the concept of usefulness and uselessness in a space. It is displayed in order to become the work of art to the audience. Upon seeing this, it looked to me like a set of bedding, a giant block that stores a selection of items which has just been placed in a way that is messy and unideal, this of course being the reason why the piece has been placed here in the first place. It is one of the first pieces of work you see as you enter the first main gallery space and is contrasted with the smaller works to the left of this. Interspacing 01 is a triple layering of ecoscreed board and gaffa tape, designed as an open discussion in relation to scale of living spaces and conditions within confinement. These are all scaled down to a variation of home furnishing sizes such as sinks, beds and chairs to create an extra layer of realism within the work. The works feel very real and very personal to the average person. That is a vague way of explaining the work and I will accept that, but I will go into more description with how it feels real towards the end of the piece. Tallentire also displayed Interspacing 04 and Interspacing 06 in the space; these being larger scale works, adding different items to the ecoscreed boards and curating a larger environment, all the while being grouped into a small space together.
Tumblr media
Interspacing 04 (above) features a larger scale ecospreed board, less rolls of gaffa tape and a roll of aluminium foil tape. Interspacing 06 was a much smaller model in comparison. Maybe I need to go back to the gallery space because before reading into the project in depth, I didn't see any of this at all. I saw Ikea coloured furnishings, spaces that looked like an unfinished GCSE technology project. I don't mean that in a negative light, it feels more nostalgic to me. When you walk into your class three weeks before the final project deadline and you have a large amount of materials. You know what you're making, but you're moulding it into the final project. Something that you'll take home to show your parents over that evenings family dinner. The shapes on the wall are jarring, in the way that they remind me of being in school and struggling with a selection of subjects, especially maths. I think there's a lot of maths connotations here, through exact measurements and spacious practices.
However, there was one piece from the exhibition that caught my attention the most, something so small and out of the way that it would have been easy to miss it completely. The other side of the room, there is a hole in the floor. It has been replaced with a glass cover, this glass cover has an iPhone showing a movie on a loop.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is Flux (2022), a 2:15 minute long looped video. It was filmed by the artist and created for John Hansard gallery out of the gallery's window. This video focuses on Guildhall Square in Southampton, an area which is very popular among tourists and the skateboarding community. The small area features an array of eateries, O2 Guildhall which is used as a live concert venue and lots of ramped areas that the skateboarders use. The short video shows the hustle and bustle of one of the nicer parts of the city centre. Again, this relates back to my initial thoughts with how it feels like walking into a technology class. The whole gallery space feels very industrial, and it works with the set of works that Tallentire has curated.
Finally, a different installation is featured in the Barker-Mill Gallery space. Look over 2 is made from materials including tape and string which is used to scale floor plans for conversion of office buildings to residential accommodations. It is made to reference 'restrictive and inhumane building', which I think is perhaps correct. Converting office spaces to home spaces for many people would mean it has been constructed in a way to make the space as small as possible to be able to home as many people as possible in that space. It asks the question as to how modern urban spaces are designed. Historically, larger environments would be created in order to home families and people who are likely to stay in the same place for a longer amount of time. I think the main issues with modern urban homing is that they are designed for the person who rents a home for a set amount of time, rather than to consider a space to live in forever. Many urban spaces in the modern era are created for those who are working in an area for a set amount of time or who are not planning on living in that set space long term. With factors to consider such as the cost of living crisis and the rise of renting from the landlord, it all makes sense.
Tumblr media
However, I think the factor of this work is unless I had actually read the full description as to what the works were about, I wouldn't have known what this piece meant at all. When I see art, I take it from a literal and visual standpoint. I come up with my own ideas as I view a piece first hand, and when I saw this work I became nostalgic. In my brain, it simply looked like the school sports hall. The type of place that is large, empty and always smells like sweaty school vests. The type of vests that everyone wears when the teachers forces you into playing a group game such as rounders.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here's a group of fun pictures of me walking around the space curated by Tallentire.
I'm not completely sure what I think of the works created. There is a meaning there and through the works descriptions and analysis by Tallentire, it all groups together very well and creates meaning through processes and materiality's. Perhaps I am viewing this collection of works through a shallow perspective, but when I saw them I felt this sense of nostalgia. How things used to be when I was younger, and I don't think it's difficult to see that through blindsided initial viewing. I feel like I have learnt more about spaces and urbanisation through reading the information about the work, but it is not something I would have taken away with immediate effect. Sometimes I feel like I walk into a gallery space and I feel like a middle aged mother who has never seen contemporary art in their life and they feel confused looking at some of the modern pieces. I was confused, but I think it is made for someone to look at visually, to like it, and then to look into it more before they realise the deeper meaning behind the works.
If you would look to read the full document about Material Distance, you can find it here.
Material Distance is available to view for free at the John Hansard Gallery in Southampton until 14 January 2023.

My shout-out to queer youtubers
Hbombs list was great but obviously not comprehensive. I watch a lot of video essayists and wanted to give a little love to the smaller channels that fall under the radar. Please feel free to add to this list!
let's talk about stuff/Sarah Zedig
If you've seen Jesse Gender's videos on the Matrix movies you may already be familiar with Sarah. She does excellent film and culture analysis with a lot of great conversations on paratext and outside influence in engaging with text. Her video on Tunic is one of my favorites.
youtube
Pamphleteer
No one makes videos like hers, which has the side effect making them a bit hard to describe. I will link one of my favorites which describes the disconnected temporality of being older when you discover you're queer.
youtube
Turbo Queer
Really really under watched channel. Skylar covers a lot of topics from video games, to anarchist history and modern events, to autistic life, to current politics. For a fun one check out her video on the SpongeBob strike episode.
youtube
Kaz Rowe
Kaz does a fantastic job examining modern myths and manufactured history primarily pertaining to western Europe, Victorian & Edwardian England, and 1800-1900s US. And of course, talking about historical queerness in all its ambiguities and evolutions. I highly recommend their video on Weimar Germany.
youtube
drapetomania
drapetomania interrogates the politics of low class and high class art and entertainment from a queer and Black perspective. Their art history videos alone cover many angles of white supremacist history I haven't seen anyone else discuss and I'm very excited to see more from them. They are also a very under viewed channel that more people should see!
youtube
I am error
Evelynn's channel primarily discusses video games in a presentation style and voice most similar to Action Button reviews. There's something just a bit more personal here though. I hesitate to say cozy since that word has a bit of an infantilizing connotation, maybe comforting is closer. She puts an immense amount of thought and empathy into the experience of playing video games and the personal narratives we build with them.
youtube
Swolesome
For more transmasc perspectives there's Swolesome. He has a lot of interesting insights into the more traditionally masculine and "broish" communities like fitness as well as commentary on recent trans issues.
youtube
Shonalika
Music, disability, and aggressively non-binary. Their video on gender presentation in heavy metal was really insightful. I would also check out the video "Why I Wear Gloves" for more insight on invisible disabilities.
youtube
Vivian Strange
Vivian delights in being a bit of a contrarian- something I really appreciate. She's probably going to challenge you and you're probably going to disagree at times, which is what makes her channel so important. Her video on Marquis De Sade is powerful and a must watch (if you can stomach the subject material, although I would encourage you to try). I haven't seen her most recent video on Saw yet but I am extremely excited to.

life lately is gloomy days and early mornings. studying for boards is a bit more stressful than i’d imagined, not because of all the material i need to review, but more because im struggling to build up the stamina for an 8 hour exam (it’s been years since i last took one and im significantly more exhausted at this point in my life than i was then). but nothing i can do but continue working! still making time for art and friends to keep myself in a good mental space and continuing to try my best :-)

Doctor Strange's disability: a (much needed) chronological review
Tumblr media
In view of recent ableism and drama on the other social hellsite involving Doctor Strange's disability, here's my response, based on *CANON* material. (link to the thread on said hellsite here)
Stephen disability is established since 1963, back in Strange Tales #115. The story is focused on a flashback which portrays his journey from the decay of his medical career because of a car accident to his path towards the mystic arts.
Tumblr media
Note that, in this very same issue, the Ancient One never says he would heal Stephen's *hands*, but perhaps Stephen would find the cure within. In other words, Stephen was supposed to heal his heart and soul from arrogance and egoism through magic, not a physical cure.
Tumblr media
Also note that there are limitations within every aspect of comic books' universes. In this case, we're talking about magic. Magic is not a miracle thing. It demands training and, most recently as established by v4, a cost (Doctor Strange v4 #4).
Tumblr media
Another clue that "magic can heal anything because it's fantasy" is not a valid argument within Marvel's magic world, as seen in The Oath. Stephen had access to the Otkid's Elixir, which could heal any disease, but the formula was lost in order to save Wong's life.
Tumblr media
One last example comes from Spider-Man Family #5 (2007), featuring Morbius and Spidey. It establishes that healing demands the exact same price when it comes to magic.
Tumblr media
Long story short, it's clear that the magic side of Marvel does not offer a solution to diseases through magical miracles. So this argument is totally invalid ~within~ this established universe.
Now back to Doctor Strange... No, he isn't using magic to heal his hands unlike some misleading accounts are claiming. In fact, there are several panels which show that he's actually in constant pain. Here's some examples:
- Doctor Strange - Sorcerer Supreme #48 (1992).
Tumblr media
- Captain Marvel v10 #6 (2019)
Tumblr media
- Doctor Strange v4 #1 (2015)
Tumblr media
He also struggles to hold a pen and write, relying on magic to do so, as seen in the Book of the Vishanti.
Tumblr media
Then comes the stupid argument I saw.
"Oh, but Google says his hands are healed!" is not a gotcha moment you think it is. We had FOUR MAIN BOOKS after that (Surgeon Supreme, DODS, Strange v3 and current v6). Allow me to clarify the details in chronological order.
Tumblr media
Stephen indeed made a "magic" gamble and healed his hands. That much is correct. But it's not all (panels from Doctor Strange v5 #19 - 2019).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Waid continued this storyline in a new book called Dr. Strange (Surgeon Supreme), which would portray Stephen's duality as the Sorcerer Supreme and a brilliant surgeon. Except the book was cancelled at issue #6 (2020), leaving the character in a kind of limbo. Now enter MacKay.
Tumblr media
MacKay kept a little bit of the former storyline as seen in Death of the Doctor Strange #1 (2021). On top of that, his hands appeared healed. However, that lasted only until Kaecilius murdered Stephen and stole his hands.
Tumblr media
Stephen's temporal duplicate used a regenerative spell to bring original Stephen back through Kaecilius' body and the stolen hands. In here, we can see that his hands are scarred just like after the car accident (DODS #5 - 2022). OG Stephen died a second time with scars as well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Stephen is indeed seen writing in v6 but it's not clear if he's using magic or not. Besides, he's not working as a surgeon anymore. Moreover, MacKay considers Stephen disabled as seen in this recent issue of v6 (#7 - 2023): "My own connection to the aether, the magic of the world, the power of the Vishanti, the power of the Sorcerer Supreme... Gone. Without all of that? I am just an old man with useless hands and a blade in his stomach."
Tumblr media
In conclusion,
As of CURRENT DOCTOR STRANGE RUN by Jed MacKay and Pasqual Ferry, in the year of our lord Vishanti, 2024, Stephen Strange is a disabled character and no magic or ableism will erase that. Thank you very much.

Shout-out to Amazon reviewers for providing such a wealth of material that it was tough to narrow it down! Honourable mention (i.e. it wouldn't fit in the text box) goes to: "A major part of the book's ending hinge's on a relationship between these two characters which is never established earlier in the book."
