I think a lot about the fact that other knights and nobles would probably treat Merlin like shit.

Because he’s a servant and all. (And also can’t shut his mouth lol)

And Merlin, being the dumb self-sacrificing idiot, would just let them, because “Arthur has bigger things to worry about”

And then when Arthur one day sees a strangle mark poorly hidden underneath Merlin’s neckerchief, he hulks the fuck out.

“Who did this to you?!”

And Merlin is like:

“Uhm.. just this one knig-“

“Name.” Arthur orders “Give me the name”

“Arthur I really don’t think tha-“

“Merlin, the name”

“Well, I just- promise you won’t go all crazy and do something stupid” Merlin begs

“How many times do I have to tell you, that I am the one who gives orders. You can not tell me what to do.” Arthur bites “Now. Name.”

Merlin sighs “Really, he’s only just strangled me this once, usually it’s just like hitting or-“

“You’re really not helping your case”

Merlin rolls his eyes and says “Fine! I’ll tell you”

“Thank u” Arthur says sarcastically “why you are protecting him is a wonder”

Merlin eyes him “well you have bigger problems, with the new agreement with Essetir and-“

“Merlin just give me the bloody name”

“Sir Ian, okay?!”

“Thank u” Arthur says with a menacing smile, putting his hand on his sword hanging from his belt and moving towards the door. Though before he can get out Merlin grabs him by the shoulder.

“Arthur can you just for once not do something impulsively stupid?”

Arthur grits his teeth “you know what’s stupid? pretending that getting strangled is just another day gone by”

“Well it’s not like it’s that bad, and better me than anyon-“

“Don’t you dare finish that sentence Merlin” Arthur says with a pained expression, he looks intensely into Merlin’s eyes. “You do not get to belittle yourself like that, yes u are an idiot, but by gods you mean so much to-“ Arthur stops himself before he reveals too much “-to everybody here in the castle, imagine if Gauis found out” he quickly says, before he says something stupid like ‘me’ instead.

“Now if you will kindly remove your hands from my person, I have a knight I would like to deal with”

And with that Arthur turns to leave out the door.
