What are the ATLA ppl's fav pseudoscience?

okay so this is a really funny question because obviously many of the atla characters do already strongly believe in things that we would classify as pseudoscience, but also because they live in an entirely different cosmology, some of what we label pseudoscience (see: ty lee's whole deal) is in fact plausible within the world they inhabit. and there are also degrees of plausibility. we see phrenology practiced (by professor zei in "the desert") but we as the audience are expected to be critical of the practice (at least... i hope!), or while katara buys into fortunetelling wholeheartedly, sokka's skepticism is also given credence. and then the concept of qi is like. integral to the fabric of the show. so i'm instead going to frame this as "their favorite pseudoscience within my modern au" because otherwise it would simply get far too confusing.

aang would probably be into cryptozoology. i don't really have much to say here, i think he'd just believe in nessie and sasquatch and mothman because why not. makes the world more magical, yknow?

katara obviously buys into astrology and palm reading and stuff of that ilk. but it's not just a fun little game for her, like she does genuinely believe it's 100% real. and she has gotten into some really terrible fights with sokka over this. (almost as bad, in fact, as their blowout fight over whether or not pluto ought to be reclassified as a planet, wherein katara was so deeply offended by sokka's claim that "the classification of pluto is not a social justice issue, except for perhaps in the sense that you sound like a conservative right now" that she dramatically declared that she was disowning him as her brother.)

sokka's role is basically to personify/embody the scientific method so him believing in pseudoscience is antithetical to his mo. that said, i guess you could say he believed in gendered bioessentialism, but even then he changes his mind the second he is presented with data that disconfirms his paradigm, so it's more honest to state that he wouldn't really "believe in" anything since that's not how he approaches the world in the first place.

toph tries acupuncture with aang in "nightmares and daydreams," and also is a walking polygraph, so let's just go with that.

suki's a dyke so she knows the basics of her birth chart just by nature of being in those circles, but she also knows better than to mention that around sokka, because she fears that he would dump her on the spot if she admitted to knowing that she's a "taurus moon."

zuko becomes convinced over the course of his life that iroh knows everything there is to know about everything, all because of that one time iroh said "maybe you shouldn't live with your father?" and zuko was like "YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT!!!' and ever since he has regretted that argument so much that he has fully bought into tcm, but also doesn't really understand it himself, so he kind of just blathers on about "hot versus cold foods" or whatever, but in a way that it's clear that he's just putting words together in a poor man's facsimile of his uncle.

mai likes to fuck with people by claiming that she genuinely believes in humor theory. she'll be like "my, doesn't someone possess an excess of black bile today?" and revel in alienating everyone around her. i mean, she doesn't actually believe in it, but by the parameters of your question, it is nonetheless her favorite pseudoscience.

despite what you might be expecting me to say, ty lee's favorite pseudoscience is actually psychology.

and azula's favorite pseudoscience is eugenics, obviously. she can't get enough of the stuff.

Russo reflects on the cancelation of her forthcoming poetry collection by a small press due to, well, the usual mindless blather about "fascism" I can't be bothered to type out. Apparently there are still, in the year 2023, when even Taylor Swift is listening to Red Scare, squalid little cowards in the world of art and literature who would sell out the immemorial birthright of poetry to ideologues and their ever-accusing finger.

Didn't their mothers tell them that when you point your finger, there are three fingers pointing back at you? For what would the left do without fascism? After slaughtering and tyrannizing poets for a century, the left requires the fascist boogeyman to convince poets that it occupies some moral high ground, as if to say, If you don't let me eat you, he will eat you! I don't want to be eaten by one or another death-cult of the state, however, no matter what pretty humanitarian words it uses to justify itself; I want to enjoy the plurality of life the state will never fully assimilate.

Anyway, I renew my recommendation of Russo's brilliantly apolitical (or cosmologically political) Substack, Cosmic Edges, currently offering a Tarot-, alchemy- astrology-, and theory-informed tour through Dante's Divine Comedy. Like the fascists and the anti-fascists in their world-wasting pas de deux, Dante also knew who was in and who was out; thankfully, as Russo shows, his poem knows much more than that.

        What is Precognition - and what is NOT? Part 2

        Here I will review three dreams relating to the inexplicable. All involve fire.

        One dream involves Carol, and another, Marilyn. They are half-sisters on my mother's side.

        One of my earliest vivid dreams regarding what people might call "precognitive" was in 1965 when I dreamt about Carol's toaster catching fire. Even so, my dream was occurring about the same time it was occurring in reality, at her house (while I was at Marilyn's place at the time). It was on 25 September 1965. Carol had thrown her burning toaster into her bathtub with a wet towel around it.

        Part of my dream replayed (with alterations integrating Carol into the narrative) the Beverly Hillbillies episode "That Old Black Magic" - that I had seen on 22 September. It may have been one of my first influences associating astrology with black magic (and evil) in a comedic way, but it was unrelated to the theme of a toaster fire.

        In another dream, as an adult, I rapidly glided from Southside La Crosse to Northside La Crosse about a foot above the streets (taking the same route as if I was walking in waking life) in the late morning. I perceived myself as a flat, two-dimensional being, shaped like a cloverleaf, called a Jargon, about the size of a car. In my dream, I saw the underside of vehicles passing over me without incident.

        Eventually, my dreaming mode and perceptual focus changes, and I appear to be a small presence (like a sentient spark) floating near Marilyn's left shoulder. My size orientation is wrong as if I was not much larger than an insect. The fuse box door is open, and a small fire is inside over one of the fuses in the upper left corner. Marilyn seems surprised at it.

        When I visited Marilyn a few days later in waking life, I learned that a small fire had occurred in that exact location in the fuse box. Precognition? No, because it happened around the same time. What was the point of the first segment with the two-dimensional "Jargon" entity (especially considering the nature of it being an English word and not something foreign)? It was probably just a pointlessly surreal imaginary event as a precursor to a different mode of dreaming.

        On the night of the day that I went with Jim (half-brother on my mother's side) to visit his friend Niles to look at his computer games, Niles died in an unusual fire. The insulation somehow caught fire, supposedly from exposed wiring. In my dream (that occurred during the event), the Loomis Street house (where I was sleeping) was superimposed over his. I saw the fire burn unusually along the ceiling. My mental voice noted this as if I was describing it without emotion. The newspaper article that reported the event mentioned how the ceiling burned unusually (though likely because of the insulation).

        The last part may seem like precognition (especially as the news article's wording was the same). However, consider that the person reporting the event may have somehow picked up on what I was thinking earlier (regarding my thoughts corresponding with the fire) even though the real-world details were also a factor. There is no legitimate way to know for sure (regarding timing or who influenced who or what information came from where).

        So far, I have reviewed five inexplicable experiences that could not have been solely coincidental. There are thousands more that I hope to review and examine more closely. None of them are similar to the generic childish blather that many people propagate - which pains me on some levels because I know they are not very bright - and their mindless blather is an embarrassment to Zsuzsanna and me.

        In the first part of this series, I mentioned that many ignorant people claim that you "cannot read" in dreams, which is untrue (like virtually everything I read about dreams). Regarding this entry, there were people who came to me a few years ago saying how "amazing" I am because I can dream of fire (although this person seemed mentally disabled, to be honest - like many who approach me as such). Yes, believe it or not, many people claim a person "cannot dream of fire." I am supposed to put faith in humanity's "intelligence?" No, absolutely not.

Hard to pin down age wise. Probably a little older than Isabelle, so late 30s?

I love the detail that he came to the island because him and Nook we're friends, so I'm keeping it. They worked at the same university for a while or something

Finds it difficult to keep friends because he really does blather on and on. But honestly Brewster and Nook are all the friends he needs, they can both listen to him for hours

Tommy secretly looks up to him a lot, but is a big bug fan and doesn't want to freak him out with bug facts. It's actually the reason Blathers comes around to a few bugs eventually

Isabelle is far too polite for her own good and will often (like twice a week at least) get stuck in hours long lectures accidentally. She's too nice to hold a grudge but deep in her soul she avoids him like the plague

He hates bugs because he has an older brother who used to use them to scare him. He eventually comes around to ladybugs but ladybugs ONLY

The ages don't really line up for Celeste to be his little sister, so I'm changing her to be his niece.

About 13 years old

Originally only came to the island when she needed a babysitter, but comes more and more frequently when she gets closer to the twins

Of course, super smart and super interested in space. She wants to be an astrophysicist one day

Loves giving book recommendations and is VERY good at it. She knows you're a bitch for found family and will give you a book that will heal your trauma

Also has trouble making friends her age. She's very excitable and kind of awkward, so she doesn't do great around teens, but she gets along really well with kids who are younger than her

Daughter of aforementioned older brother of Blathers. She both takes after him in loving to annoy Blathers and doesn't actually get along with him that well. She wouldn't say it but she actually prefers the island to home.

@vintage-tech asked for my analysis of this Libra horoscope thing. My insights are based on opinion and balancing out what I’ve read from different quacks and my own experiences. Your mileage may vary, don’t void your bladder where prohibited, etc.

Lots of blather and a transcription of the images’ text at the end. Forgive me on the formatting, both in transcript and this whole mess of a post. I have too many thoughts and not enough organization

This sounds somewhat typical of different Libra interpretations I’ve seen.

(3/5) Medium height (not width), have been called graceful in the far-past. Partial credit there. Decent health, sure. Kidney ailments, yesssss. And that’s a thing I’ve heard before.

See, there’s an “alignment” of different body parts to different signs. “Sexual Astrology” by Joanna Martine Woolfolk (1979) notes these regions as erogenous zones. From what I’ve discussed with folks, the template fits. I’ve also seen it applied as “health troubles”, though I’m less certain about that correlation. (Don’t harp on me about a source on that image. I don’t have the patience to track it down right now, and it’d probably take foreeeever.)

In my experience, the kidney and/or bladder problems has been a thing. But I’ll also posit that I’ve had a lot of lower back muscle pain, as well, in the past.

(3/5) Yes and no to all of that. Experience and mental health has shaken some habits and cemented others. I don’t make strict plans, but going without a plan is scary. Sometimes planning and such is a way to avoid a situation, too.

When I see the other person is no longer putting in the same amount of effort, I withdraw. But, in the past, I’ve put in more effort than I should have. So that was kinda doomed. Again, “people pleaser”.

(2/3) I’ve had a relatively easy time in relationships, but they’ve also been few and far between. Communication and understanding what I/we want have been my/our hurdles. The less a situation personally impacts me, the more sides I can see.

The children thing is less a nurturing side and more “these people are friendly”. Some of it’s autism-related, some is empathy regarding how helpless kids can feel/be. I never related well to my same-age peers, and adults loved my “old soul”. But I also know I would not feel comfortable having a young child rely on me.

I think it’s a desire to feel wanted - especially as tied with the stereotype of libras liking “luxury” or “fine arts” etc. “I don’t need this person in my life to survive, but they are a delight to be around.” (Broken record: “people pleaser” again.) I do love to flirt, even pretend-flirting, where we both know nothing more will happen. It’s a safe-ish form of adrenaline rush.

The “good wives and mothers” thing feels double-edged. (This counts as 2 points.) Like, I can’t function as a wife or mother in ways that keep the day running, that keep life flowing. I have the emotional capacity, though. I’ve fondly imagined myself as being the “confidant aunt” to people, regardless of actual family connection. (I am not close to my nieces/nephews, but that’s not also a literal physical distance thing.)

Bad at business? I would cite that they mean the “more likely to buy impractical luxuries that spark joy, rather than buy a sturdy and practical necessity” stereotype. I’m bad at business for DIFFERENT reasons, sir.

Overall: 19/28 - Decent analysis, not as “accurate” as more recent publications. “First and last paragraphs” are only partial “bunk”.

I’ve got my own baggage that hinders this analysis. Can’t quite separate symptoms from traits, especially as my demeanor changes over the decades. Some of this also took “reading between the lines” to gather what they meant, to connect to stereotypes said in later analyses. 

This vintage libra analysis seems mostly like other examples I’ve read. The notes of being a good mother (not father?) feel out-of-place. Just that I haven’t seen them in other analyses. Plaid-dad is also a libra, and he has always been doting and supportive. He also gets along with kids so well, and I’ve observed that all my life.

One of my libra friends, Jodee, used to work with kids. She’s was like a big sis to me right from the start of our friendship, and she’s like that with her other friends. I’ve seen libras have big hearts, sometimes not knowing how to channel all the love they want to give to others. (Different forms of love, I mean, too.)

Logical and business-related notes are also unfamiliar. The stereotype is often that libra is more dreamy and romantic, at the expense of practicality and reality. “Champagne and caviar dreams”, as the saying goes. Indecisiveness is another big stereotype. Seeing the different sides and options can be a drawback.

The article is 80+ years old, so it makes sense that some of the stereotypes have changed. Perhaps later economic booms brought some of them to the front? Societal priorities also changed, along with expectations and roles that we might acknowledge, even if we don’t embrace them.

I've started pondering the animals' zodiac signs. With nothing else to do but play the stalk market during the day and fight spiders at night, it's been a pretty decent pastime.

Bonbon is definitely a Leo. She's a popstar, or she was. When I met her, I was doing the usual, hunting for bugs and fish on a random island that can only be described as not mine, and there she was. Amongst the bamboo, she was just sort of milling around. I invited her to live on Spearchuck and the rest is history. But I thought that Bonbon would be humble or shy, because she's a rabbit, and back home those things can have heart attacks just from being picked up. But this one wants to be a million things, and really only talks about her personal brand and how she has to stay fit or try new things or see new sights for her fans. Bonbon is very sweet though, she always welcomes me into her home, and she's happy to chat. So it doesn't bother me.

Cyd is an Aquarius. He's weird as hell, and generally pretty laid back unless something is bothering him. He gives off the typical air sign aloofness but he's got great fashion sense and he's a lovely guy. A mysterious one too, because I don't know how he got here, he and his house just showed up one day??

Kabuki is probably a Pisces. He be writing poetry and sh*t, and really lives for peace. He loves his bonsai shelf and sticks to his aesthetic, and he seems to love deep-thinking and daydreaming. He's probably one of the coolest people (? creatures?) I've ever met, even though he laughs at my wasp stings. Same with Kit (being a Pisces, I mean. She's not f*cking rude). Tank is just loud and friendly and probably a Sagittarius. I say that because he just lets stuff happen. He's never worried, he just works out and fishes and hopes for the best, and it seems to work for him, if the weight lifting he does in the plaza is any indication.

Clay is probably an Aries. He just kind of goes with the flow and he can be encouraging but self-absorbed. He's most responsive when he's getting something, and that's fine with me. Some people are just like that. What can you do?

Annalise is most like a Cancer. She seems really nurturing and sweet, but a little anal about the order of her things or the timing of activities. She's never been mean to me, but she's a horse, and I can see the stress veins in that long ass neck.

I'd bet my life Marshal is a Scorpio. He's broody, creative, and mysterious. He's a joy to be around, but he definitely gives off "romance poet dying of distemper in the 1800s" vibes.

Last and definitely fucking least, I'm not sure what sign Rex is. He's a complete idiot but also quick to anger, so maybe he's an Aries. Who the hell else would be convinced that everyone likes them on an island where he purposefully gets pushed into pitfalls? A complete buffoon and a certain fire sign, that's who.

The people that do business on our island are another story. I think Timmy (or Tommy, whichever one is quieter) is a Pisces or an Aquarius. His brother is so in charge we're probably looking at a Gemini or a Capricorn. If Tom Nook isn't a damn Capricorn, I will eat my own hand. He's set in his ways, business savvy, and money hungry. Probably an Earth sign, as he can stay put on his ideals. Isabelle is for sure a Libra. She is definitely willing to stand up for those in need, but other than that, she's just...joyous. All the time.

Blathers is a fucking Virgo. He's picky as hell and will talk forever about shit he likes. A total nerd about certain subjects. Celeste, his sister, is probably a water sign. A Cancer, maybe? She's smart but she's kind of a hopeless romantic when it comes to astrology.

Lastly, the Able Sisters. Let me just say, that Sable is my favorite. She's such an adorable little hedgehog, and she's very shy, and I just want to protect her. So she's probably a Pisces too. But Mabel is very in charge, so she's a Leo or a Virgo or something outgoing. They're both lovely. I could've just asked them all their signs, but talking to everyone would make me tired. And I would never ask Rex because I hate him more than anything else. Ever. And so I just sat around and guessed instead of being social. Which sounds exactly like something I would do. Maybe I'll ask Mr. K.K. his sign the next time I see him? I can't seem to pin him down.
