Mythunga camara, oil pastel on wooden panel.
Mythunga is Australia's only named pterosaur! I had no idea we were so lacking in flying reptiles until doing some research for this drawing.
Tumblr media
I tried to go for an inverted colour scheme beyond the diagonal lines, no idea if it's the right colours lol.

Sure, Aussie magpies are scary when you get swooped, we've all been there. I've been there. But consider: you can befriend them. Whistle to imitate their song, slip them some delectable tidbits, and voila: you have new friends, who are birds. This is good.
Here's the secret: if you're careful and respectful and learn how to interact with them in a way that shows you're careful and respectful, you can befriend *any* bird on that list. Heck, any bird at all really. *this is not an endorsement for people just getting into birds' personal spaces or feeding wild birds or anything utterly ignorant and destructive along those lines
before y'all say impossible for cassowaries, I will remind everyone that they were tamed, domesticated, and reared as farm animals on Papua/Niugini/Niu Gini/New Guinea

Major shelf shuffle! I decided to swap the long standing Dino Zone with my Australian animal collection, giving them more space to spread out, and changed a lot of displays on this half of the room.
Really happy to see the Aussie animals more on display, and it's nice to have them right under the thylacine shelves! It's funny how the Tassie devil corner is just a dark shadowy place too lol. Synapsid space is down below them! You may spot that one dinosaur managed to stay on this shelf, because she is Australian too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Since I also decided to get rid of my fish tank (don't worry, all fish had lived full lives and it was vacant for a while) I had more free space to the left side too. So I decided to move the little set of drawers up there (full of bones and such...) and make a nice skully naturey display on top. Not much of a theme to the animal figures in front, just a few I like!
Tumblr media
And off to the left of that, Pawface is getting to hang out by my galaxy projector light and some tiny drawers of rocks and trinkets. Ink (the black, one eyed creature) is out to play for the first time in a while too!
Tumblr media
The dinosaurs and other prehistoric guys are doing fine and only a few needed to be put away! They've got the two lower left shelves, and the lowest shelf even has a bit of a rainbow going on.

It's Rewind Time!
The three Humans on the "Dinosaur" station were... perplexing, to say the least. Academically, all brilliant geniuses, they're even becoming experts on xenobiology despite us only recently giving them all kinds of information on the numerous species that are part of the Coalition. We wouldn't want them to gather it in a more... direct way. Mentally, we seem to have to worry about every Human we converse with.
One of them was showing us a lab with numerous avian creatures locked in small but seemingly comfortable habitats. One of our own who had been in turn studying Human and Earth biology noted that the environmental settings were more extreme than the creature's norm would demand. Heightened oxygen composition for one, and the provided nutrients were far more than the enclosed creatures needed.
Then the stimulant was released. A small drone, mimicking various animalistic behaviors, was deliberately provoking and agitating the creatures, almost as if trying to get them to attack it. We looked to the Human, Everie Jackobson, who was deep in thought and jotting down notes of his observations. He explained:
"Unfortunately, it is extremely hard to acquire DNA samples of creatures from before the Cenozonic Era, it's just been so long and the few samples preserved in amber are all incomplete. Henrietta is working on those, trying to piece together what's missing, while Gieverne is cooking up a mix, splicing together existing DNA to make an approximation.
Meanwhile, I am working with the direct descendants of dinosaurs - birds! Specifically, I am trying to recreate the conditions of prehistoric Earth and sort of... nudge them to evolve backwards into the big ones.
The results are mixed so far, but I did manage to get these swallows to be 20% bigger in only two generations, and look at that beak - it's around 12% sharper and tougher! If this keep up, soon they'll be able to dent the drones!"
He put his writing utensils on a desk, and with a deep penetrating stare looked at his notes, then the birds, then us, and spoke with unshakeable determination:
"I don't care how long it takes, even if I have to be cryogenically frozen - I WILL live to ride a dinosaur!"

Minmi paravertebra was small (2.5-3m long) and lived in Australia like me. Perhaps in another life we could have been friends. At least I can draw him having a fun eating apples

Terix
Humans, often unpredictable, abandoned all reason on deathworld Terix. Initial surveys noted the planet’s apex predators were predominantly reptilian. Galactic Union declared it a deathworld and it was largely forgotten. Human researchers had been poring over uncolonized planet reports. Their aim had been to find places they could settle where others couldn’t.
Within weeks of discovering Terix several privately sponsored bio engineering expiditions descended on the planet. None of these had been sanctioned by the United Earth government. In all previous settlements humans fully complied with interstellar regulation. This was just the beginning of the irregularities.
After acknowledging the illegality of unsanctioned actions, the human government forces declared Terix to be vital to military research. Galactic Union bureaucracy was slow to respond. As political committees debated, humans dissembled and filed appeals in interstellar courts.
Whispers and rumors thrived in the absence of official narrative. Low resolution videos depicted smooth and scaled bodies dealing unspeakable violence to each other. Unverified reports were difficult to distinguish from popular human entertainment. Stories of unethical experiments and last stands against ravenous hordes flooded the feeds and channels. Some were hoaxes, most were sensationalist and exaggerated.
Eventually patience with the humans ran out. Tensions reached the point that many feared the outbreak of war. Abruptly, delegates from Earth government agreed to open the planet up to inspections from any and all comers. Government functionaries, media, academics and august personages turned out in droves. The alleged horrors were nowhere to be seen.
It appeared that the humans were planning to develop an amusement park on the deathworld. The natural environment was hardly changed. There was evidence of illegal genetic modifications. Natives of Terix had been significantly altered to resemble various extinct native species of Earth. The results were terrifying. Something had to be done to stop this madness.
Representatives of human government, military and private finance were prepared to pay fines in recompense for the unethical nature of early experimentation. Questions were raised regarding the rumors of death on the planet. Humans asserted that the only deaths were human, and that compensation had been dealt with.
Objections remained. Protestors demanded that the experiments be euthanized, humans removed from the planet, and be subject to heavy sanctions. A riot nearly broke out. Deafening screams pealed out from the sky above. Winged reptiles the size of lower atmosphere aircraft circled above. Humans sat astride their gargantuan necks. In defiance of biological science these monsters released gouts of flame from their mouths.
“Did you really think we would go to the trouble of making dinosaurs and not make dragons as well?” An anonymous (possibly apocryphal) human quipped.

whats your general work flow in zbrush to make your realistic dinosaur textures, im still trying to figure out how to make my dinosaur textures look realistic ;w;
Hey, thanks for the ask! I saw your edit where you meant substance painter instead of zbrush so I will do a breakdown on my texturing workflow in there.
I find the key to realism is a lot of contrast, noise, variation and randomness!
I always start with just the base colours where I remember the above keys and fill in the patterns on the animal. Some colours are also just easier to make look realistic on dinosaurs than others! I find browns just about always look good while blues as an ex can be much harder to make work.
Tumblr media
Using my Tarchia as a reference this is how it appeared after I painted just the colours, which I did using mostly the default dirt brush and a few other dot, mold, dust and other dirt default brushes. Afterwards I also go over with a few dirt and noise textures set to overlay to add more variation.
Tumblr media
My next step is to add in ambient occlusion and curvature generators. I usually do 4-8 set at different colours, balances and some at multiply and others at overlay. This automatically puts in any ambient occlusion and natural fading to the scales that helps in final rendering.
During this process I also add lots of variation in the roughness maps! Keratin especially should have a very shiny base and then have lots of dirt generators over the top to add sharp variation while between the cracks have little to no reflectivity, which I also apply to the scales.
Now my final and favourite part... Cement das conk creet baybee!!
Tumblr media
I literally just put a cement dirt generator over the top of the colour and as a high roughness. I don't always do this but usually I find it helps give the appearance of dirt and dust that's gathered in between the scales. a lighter colour brings more attention to the individual scales and a dustier appearance instead of just blending into the shadows and AO. It also adds extra noise detail for when you zoom in that is basically impossible to achieve at such high detail in the sculpt alone.
Extra things that can help are adding a specular map on top of the roughness with lots of noise breakup. If you're doing close up shots, UDIMs and splitting the head and body can help too like I did with my Tarchia. Most of the texture quality comes from the colour and normal map in my experience.
Best of luck! And remember good lighting can make even the least realistic textures look real!

I think I want to add Dinosaurs
I am easily influenced and manipulated by what I see and hear. Literally listening to a podcast about not-dinosaurs and it mentioned dinosaurs and now I'm thinking - I don't think I've encountered the idea of using space tech to bring back dinosaurs in any of these, I'm sure there's plenty I just don't know of them, yet. I know some have things like dragons and other monstrous creatures. Warhammer 40K has space elves riding dinosaurs. Dinosaurs are cool.
______________________________________
Hailing from a Deathworld, Earth's flora and fauna, including Humans, are quite sturdy and potent. Unfortunately, it is as a result of a seemingly incomprehensible mix of hundreds and billions of organisms, evolutionary necessity they call "survival of the fittest", and, sometimes, just sheer willpower. Not something easily replicable for the majority of species within the Galactic Coalition.
So when we learned one of their stations is purpose designed to revive long extinct local species called dinosaurs - a very loose term that encompasses millions of wildly different and unrelated species across a greater time span than even some of the most ancient galactic civilizations, let alone a relatively infantile one such as Humanity, we were, once again, worried.
These creatures were massive beasts of pure power, teeth, claws, bulk, even organic armor and certain kinds of naturally evolved weapons! Most Humans have nothing but respect, fear, and awe towards them. And they want to bring them back. We're already getting too used to hearing this response, but still we had to ask why.
"It'll be so cool! Dinosaurs!! In Space!!!"
"Just imagine - a giant 3 meter tall T-Rex, kitted out with a dragon pattern armor plates, twin mini-guns mounted on its sides, friggin' laser beam goggles!, me riding it with a energy sword, holding Earth's flag and being all - Fuck yeah!"
We thought these experimental science stations housed the brightest minds Humanity had to offer, paragons of knowledge, creativity, invention, and progress. Are our translators working right? Or is Humanity just... crazy?
