Sikah was, to put it lightly, pissed. Her body ached and her wounds stung as the party stumbled back to camp. The battle they'd just fought was completely avoidable if Karlach had simply let Sikah talk to the damn cambions before smashing their skulls in. Her impulses were usually rather beneficial, but when dealing with Mammon and his court of Dukes, Sikah felt that she had the upper hand; and she wanted to use it.
She ignored the party as Shadowheart began recon by the fire, healing cuts and bruises. Instead, the rogue went to hide away in her tent. Sikah had a stash of healing potions stored in her chests, and the bitter taste of the medicine would match her mood.
Karlach watched as Sikah slunk to her tent. She knew that her partner was cross with her after the events of that day’s adventure, but the barbarian was determined to prove herself. After Shadowheart cast a quick healing word over her injuries, Karlach marched over and ripped the flaps of Sikah’s tent open.
"I don't think you have any right being angry with me after your own reckless behavior, Sikah."
"Ever heard of knocking?" the smaller woman scoffed as she unlaced her wrist guards.
Great, now they were playing the blame game. Sikah didn’t lose the blame game.
"Oh? My reckless behavior? Enlighten me, Karlach, what was the reckless behavior I exhibited today? Knowing the cambions in Mammon's lair, knowing Mammon himself? Trying to talk to them before causing a scene? I used to fucking work for them, I could have easily lied our way in there!"
Karlach shook her head. "Maybe you've forgotten that we were in the Hells and anything to do with Mammon is never going to be a simple task."
"The devil had me under his thumb for years, Karlach, I know that shit isn't simple," Sikah threw her leather armor to the ground, the scarring across the upper left of her body more apparent without it. "I never said bashing was out of the question, I thought we all had a mutual agreement to try and snake our way in before doing anything brash. Gale and Shadowheart aren't as accustomed to the Hells or strong as we are, they would have gotten killed much faster than us." She crossed her arms as her tail flicked angrily. "I know how you feel about the Hells, but you have to remember that you aren't the only one who's suffered there."
"That's precisely my point. I was keeping everyone else safe, including you. But you can't stand not having control over the situation, so you just… hyper-focus on whatever you think is best and don’t listen to anyone else." Karlach angrily threw her hands up in the air.
"Karlach, I hate to be the one to tell you this, but I'm not a frail maiden in need of protection. I can hold my own. Mammon and his cohort are a different breed of devils, and you aren't the only tiefling who's been damned to the Hells. I was trying to use my advantage to get us through without fighting… at least not fighting out the gate. What part of that do you not get ?"
"The part where you assume I don't understand the situation. I know how they manipulate and control. They'll never trust a tiefling, regardless of what you think you know about them. You were never going to get the upper hand without a fight. Why do you think I chose to go in alone?"
"I..." Sikah bit her tongue. Perhaps Karlach was right. None of those devils had ever, or would ever trust a tiefling, all they ever did was exploit them. Even when Sikah worked under Mammon’s Duke, Focalor, he easily agreed with Zotian and sold her off to Mephistopheles without batting an eye.
"I wish you didn't think you always have to go in alone. I wish you would have left some of them for me to kill. We have a team, we have allies, we have each other." The shorter tiefling looked up into Karlach's fiery eyes. "I know you want to protect me, but I'm not a helpless damsel in distress."
The barbarian's face softened as she reached out a hand and gently touched Sikah's cheek.
"If you only saw what I've seen in Avernus, you would know why I can't let someone I care about get hurt."
Sikah leaned into Karlach's touch and sighed.
"I do see what's in Avernus. I've seen it, and I know you've seen far worse, but for that same reason, I don't want you getting hurt. I know you're not as quick to buckle under axe blows as me, but... I'd never forgive myself if something happened and Zariel found you. If she took you away from me."
Karlach pulled the other tiefling into a tight hug. She hadn't expected Sikah to be as outwardly concerned for her as she was, but maybe that was her fault. As far as the barbarian knew, the rogue had always been rather independent. Karlach gently rubbed the rogue’s back with one hand. "You don't have to worry about what happens to me. But you should be concerned with yourself. Remember this: Avernus will tear you down to the bone if you give it the chance."
"I do worry about you," Sikah wrapped her arms around her lover's strong waist. "I fear that your recklessness is because of your hourglass of time." As her head lay upon the woman's chest she listened to the mechanical sounds of the engine that took the place of her heart. "What's the point in protecting me if you aren't there to be with me? If you aren't alive by my side? I don't want to live a life without you."
Karlach was taken aback by the sudden vulnerability of Sikah’s inquiries. She rarely openly asked for reassurance. If Karlach had a heart, she was sure it would have skipped a beat. A feeling of profound warmth blossomed within her chest as she held the other tiefling a little tighter.
"I know my time is limited, Sikah; but as long as we have each other, that's all that matters to me. I would be willing to die a thousand times over if I had the chance to save you. My future is in you ."
"Then live with me." Sikah looked up at Karlach, a look of stubborn determination on her face. "I know you despise the thought, but Dammon could be right... If after all this tadpole shit is over and through, we go back to Avernus, together. We buy you more time, buy us more time. Hells, who knows, we might find something to repair your engine for good."
If the party's brief trip to Avernus that day had anything to show, Sikah thought it was decent proof that the infernal smithy’s proposition wasn't all that farfetched.
The possibility was enough to make Karlach's mind wander. The mere thought of continuing her existence in Avernus for even a minute more than she was destined had always terrified her, but the idea of having Sikah by her side made that terrifying thought seem not so terrible after all.
"Is that what you want? For us to go back there, together?"
"More than anything," Sikah stood on her toes and pecked Karlach's lips. "I know I've got nothing on your ten-year stint, but two years in an infernal prison gave me a decent preview. It's shit, I know, but with good company and motivation, maybe it wouldn't be so bad?"
Karlach returned the kiss, a wide smile spreading across her face. It was tempting, the possibility of more time with Sikah; and if the two of them worked together, maybe they could figure something out.
"You know, you're not half bad at swaying me with your words. But don't think that this will be easy. I may have made a lot of progress, but I still hate that damn place."
"And I’m not asking you to love it, just… tolerate it. Who knows, maybe one day we'll be able to return to Faerûn for good. Live the rest of our days together in a nice house, just the two of us, maybe a cat or two" Sikah dragged her finger over Karlach's glowing chest.
Karlach laughed softly as Sikah’s touch sent ripples through her. As she spoke of a peaceful and safe life for the two of them, the barbarian couldn't help but get caught up in the idea.
"Do you really want that? A quiet, mundane life for us? What would you do if we weren't fighting for our survival?"
"Hmm, I dunno," Sikah pondered for a bit, tracing her fingers around the metal of the valves in Karlach's shoulders. "Maybe I'd open a jewelry shop, make a bit of gold the honest way for once," she chuckled, "I'd spend lots of time with you of course; lay in a nice, plush bed every night in your arms."
A soft groan rose in Karlach's chest as Sikah's touch made her engine pulse and burn with desire. The image of the two of them together, with Sikah's arms wrapped around her, was more than the barbarian could bear.
"That would be so damn nice, Sikah. We could make anything an adventure. Just the two of us together. That's all I want."
The barbarian took a deep breath, steeling herself.
"We're getting distracted."
"And that's a problem, how?" The rogue deviously smirked at Karlach. "It's late, half the camp is asleep by now, I doubt they'd notice if you spent the night in my tent..."
Something snapped inside of the barbarian as she contemplated Sikah's suggestion. Her words were suggestive, and the implications of them were clear.
No one would notice if she stayed with the tiefling, and… Karlach had to clear her throat to try to get rid of the sudden lump of lust that had developed in the back of it.
"We have an early morning, you know that."
Sikah raised a brow and laughed, a genuine, toothy grin on her face.
"The Karlach Cliffgate having a responsible bedtime? Who are you and what have you done with my lover?" She patted the barbarian's cheek. "The night is still young, Gale's just now put out the fire..."
"Shut it, you." The barbarian's cheeks flushed as she was teased. Sikah was right, the fire had freshly gone out, leaving the pair in the dim candlelight of the rogue’s tent. Her partner’s words easily cut right through the layer of self-control that was barely holding itself together. Karlach bit her lip to keep herself from smiling too much.
"Stop."
"Change into your camp clothes and come back? We don't have to do anything too... rigorous. I just don't want to be apart from you, after today." Sikah bashfully admitted.
"Stay?"
And there it was: the moment when the last shred of resistance melted away. Any semblance of self-control was gone, and Karlch was left wanting nothing more than to be next to the other.
"... You really want me to?"
"I do," Sikah nodded, her hand caressing the woman's arm before reaching for her hand. "I want you to stay with me, for as long as you'd let me; and I’m not just talking about tonight." She intertwined their fingers, hoping that Karlach would get the message.
The barbarian understood the message perfectly. "Can I ask you a question?"
"Mmhm," the shorter woman nodded, "always."
"Promise me something." Karlach brought their linked hands up to her lips and kissed Sikah’s knuckles.
"Yes?" The rogue looked up at her expectantly.
"Promise me that... if we go to Avernus together... if something goes wrong... that you'll come looking for me, no matter what?" She leaned down to rest her forehead against the other’s.
"I promise," Sikah squeezed her hand tight, her heart straining at the thought. "I'll always find you, even if I have to go to the deepest pit of the Hells, even if it takes all the years of my life. I'll find you. In every lifetime and in every universe." She swallowed the nervousness in her throat.
"I love you, Karlach. The past months we've spent together have been the best of my life. You've helped me see the world in a different light, helped me heal wounds I didn't know I had." She smiled shyly. "Tadpoles be damned, but I'm glad these parasites led me to you."
With those words, Karlach's chest began to burn with joy— not unlike the fire of her engine, but it somehow felt different. She was moved in a way that she hadn't been before, and for a moment, Karlach felt that any worries or responsibilities could wait until tomorrow. All that mattered to her now was the tiefling in her grip. The barbarian kissed the thief’s forehead and pulled her close to her chest.
"I love you too," she whispered, "more than you could ever imagine."
"And we'll be okay, as long as we have each other."
“Always.” Karlach smiled as she held the other tiefling in her grasp. With Sikah in her arms and her engine beating steadily in her chest, she felt truly alive. And for the first time in a long time, she felt hopeful. As long as they were together, they could take on hell itself.

DND Rocks
I love DND SO SO MUCH because I started a new campaign today and as it was an impulsive ‘I wanna DM’ from my youngest bro we just used characters we like as our PCs.
So the party consists of:
Strix… (I can’t remember the rest) who has one string arm (inspired by Ginny Di) for the funnies as our rouge, Luz Noceda as our wizard/druid, King Clawthorne as our barbarian, Grian as our artificer (and since we dunno how they work and don’t have the book he’s just a wizard but instead of spells every long rest he gets one of each ‘explosive’ item, it’s TOTALYYYY balanced dw XDD), Virgil Sanders as our warlock and ‘Skeleman With Magic Powers Purple’ as our other druid.
And in this session we’ve (some highlights):
Fought a bunch of monsters (one having a attack that happens each round of you can hear it so Mary Poppins started shout-singing supercalifragalisticexpalidocius [I’m in charge of music {and notetaking} so of course I put it on loop extra loud XDD] so it didn’t effect us).
Kings (player not DM this time- he’s the ‘forever DM’ of our group [just me and my 2 bros]) made King a custom race for Sting (King and Skele are DMPCs as Sting wanted to have some PCs to help him with getting out of his comfort zone) which comes with the spell thunder wave AKA thunder-WEHH.
Convinced a giant squid in a language it doesn’t understand to not fight cuz fighting bad and now it’s our ally and Luz is controlling water to keep it alive until we find it an ocean.
And visited a tavern where:
Mary Poppins bought 10 penguins to start a band with.
Strix got a gf and bought a house for them plus bought lots of alcohol cuz there’s always gotta be an alcoholic PC.
And lastly Luz and Grian started a small bakery called ‘Grian’s Grains y Spain’ (Luz is involved bc I couldn’t afford it with only Grian’s GP so they split the cost and ownership) where they’ve employed one Amity Blight (who will start off disliking her bosses and of course end up in a relationship with Luz).

i woke up at 3:30 and couldn't get back to sleep time to design new polyam kids based loosely off the don bluth penguins. first drafts, the taller guy's head and hair is especially subject to change because i'm pretty meh on the current design. he also got off model immediately in the second drawing but all of them did kinda, though that's more me having a hard time with consistency than anything. both guys are kinda :/ to me rn but i love how the girl turned out lol
tiefling guy has yellow hair, red eyes, a ponytail, and a bandana to tie into the inspiration. i'm thinking pink for his skin but not sure yet. half elf guy has an ascot instead of a scarf, maybe i should give him a hat also though i'm picturing his hair as red-orange to match it rn, taller than the other two. he should be even taller than them but again, first drafts, it's fine. also want him to have those big vivid blue eyes. yuan-ti girl has a prominent widow's peak rather than the double-peak thing the inspiration has in her design, a choker, and maybe i should put flowers in her hair? flowers SOMEWHERE in her design. the dress in her first drawing is based off the general dress-like shape too, though she's more often seen in her less fancy clothes while at work.
tiefling is a barbarian, half-elf is a bard, yuan-ti is an artificer. no names for them yet. i'm tempted to swap the initials around (guy-on-left having an h name, guy in middle having an m name, girl having an r name) but i'm not married to that idea. though my first thought while thinking of virtue names for the tiefling was 'hubris' and that's funny to me. like icarus before him, flying too close to the sun. lmao.

Treats of the Trick: Halloween 2023 Winners! ~
Congratulations to @coolcoolcooltighttightight, @just--a--penguin and @spooky-bard for winning this week's contest!
Tumblr media
@coolcoolcooltighttightight — Food of the Fae
So yeah, I've seen Pan's Labyrinth an age and a half ago. Is this related? Probably not one-to-one but it's also a general mythos with some cool implications here. Blue food has always been a fun little work-around for lifegain for me, and I think that this card's pseudo-mixed-messaging prevents it from being too disjointed. Considering that you might want a mix of faerie and non-faerie creatures, one would think that things would get odd in deckbuilding, but I think that the fun of this is both for flavor and for limited, and the success is a meta one.
The creatures becoming faeries helps with faerie buffs, for one. I think that the activated ability should have a reflexive trigger instead of the kinda-replacement you have currently, but that still shows the fun of having the creature then benefit from faeries AND get flying afterwards. The more food, the more faeries you can make! Even a one-off of a bigger creature like a red brute or a green bigthing would be worth it in the shell. And eating the Food to make faeries? Fantastically done; a draft/sealed deck would use this for sure and it would feel right at home in the western European folktale side of things. Really cute and captivating! ... Oh no. It's got me.
Tumblr media
@just--a--penguin — Many-Headed Splendor
Lots of these cards were really well-designed this week, but I had a hard time coming to grips with which ones were best balanced and stood out. Rereading it all, I came back to this card and thought about the design mitigations of having a creature's base P/T become 0. But the ETB replacement making it big like that? I think this card is a blast in a set with big-power-little-toughness cards, with counter synergies, Theros-style heroism, and just in general, it's a card that does just enough of everything to be clever.
The trample's what really sells me, honestly. If absolutely nothing else, it gives a creature some extra evasion for that point of damage. Two of these cards on the same creature is especially fun. I can envision a satyr or human or, I dunno, a Dominarian barbarian jumping out from the woods with a whole bunch of psychic heads growing from them, and feeling that expansion with the weakness inherent to the changed self, having it become splendorous in power but then defined by its new hydra nature, is very cool to me as well. We're in the valley of "they could print this card and I'd love it" and that's just a fun place to be.
Tumblr media
@spooky-bard — Shadowtwister Crone
Tumblr media
My fellow, my captain, my compatriot—I want this to be an uncommon so badly too but I'm almost 100% convinced that it needs to be a rare. But I don't know. I don't know! It's creepy and spooky and you're making a nightmare out of a scarecrow and I'm making a mountain out of a molehill. Remembering other effects similar to this...I can think of, uh, one, and I don't remember the name of it. It's insanely powerful and frustrating without proper removal, but ya know what, isn't everything in this damn game? Argh! Menacing scarecrows! I still love this card!
It's a little bit halloweeny, too, and looking through the winners this week, I actually didn't think about the halloween implications until afterwards. The faerie enchantment plays into established mythos, the hydra card is a solid fantasy card-game staple, and now we're more fully into in-world flavortown in a way that's oppressive on-board and a singular story that's... Heck, I dunno, I'm losing words for precisely what I'm trying to say here about how these cards feels different from each other in unique ways and why this card is a particularly emotion-driven one. Which is a good thing. You took a pushed piece of board presence and gave it a standard but effective creepy air. Perhaps I love the scarecrow and the infrequent kindred nature of those crow-scarin' sons of witches. Perhaps it's the way this woman turns things her scarecrows into nightmares and your creatures into shadows. I think you just nailed a bunch of good pieces together and I'm feeling the heat, so to speak. Is that so wrong? Is that helpful? Is she standing right behind me?

For my book, in order to understand how the British viewed their own history in medieval times, I have been reading the Penguin Classics edition of “The History of the Kings of Britain.” This work was originally written in Latin by Geoffrey of Monmouth and published in 1136. Scholars always disputed its accuracy, and those in the present day treat it as a work of fiction. Some of the more dubious claims in the book include the Britons being descended from Trojan colonists and that they invaded the Italian peninsula prior to the later takeover of Britain by the Romans. Also sometimes present are elements of fantasy. The book is still important in several ways, however. Even if the history given is highly inaccurate, there previously existed few books attempting to chronicle British history. Some of the key events in the book were embellished but did genuinely occur, including the invasion of Britain by Julius Caesar, the conquest of Britain by Rome, the integration of the British into the Roman empire, the introduction of Christianity into Britain, the persecution of early British Christians, the “barbarian” invasions that forced Rome to abandon Britain, and the occupation of Britain by the Saxons after the Romans withdrew. Perhaps most consequential in terms of cultural impact, Geoffrey of Monmouth was the first author to write down stories about King Arthur.

Paramount said on Monday it had reached a deal to sell Simon & Schuster, one of the biggest and most prestigious publishing houses in the United States, to the private-equity firm KKR, in a major changing of the guard in the books business.
The deal, for $1.62 billion, will put control of the cultural touchstone behind authors like Stephen King and Bob Woodward in the hands of a financial buyer with an expanding presence in the publishing industry.
While private equity investors have had a significant footprint in the book business — different firms have owned literary agencies, publishing houses and the retailer Barnes & Noble — the acquisition of one of the largest publishers in the country vastly increases the hold of financial interests in the business.
“I think I speak on behalf of the entire management team when I say we are thrilled with the result,” Jon Karp, chief executive of Simon & Schuster, said in an interview. “They plan to invest in us and make us even greater than we already are. What more could a publishing company want?”
Mr. Karp will stay on as chief executive after the deal closes.
Richard Sarnoff, an adviser to KKR on its media deals, is a familiar name to many in the publishing industry and his involvement is encouraging, said several publishing executives on Monday. Mr. Sarnoff has held multiple positions at Bertelsmann, the company that owns Penguin Random House, and served as chairman of the Association of American Publishers, a trade group.
In letters to Simon & Schuster’s staff members and authors, Mr. Karp said that he had known Mr. Sarnoff for two decades, and that he “understands the nuances of the book business as well as anyone I know.”
Also involved is Ted Oberwager, who leads KKR’s gaming, media, entertainment and sports group. Mr. Oberwager is on the board of RBMedia, an audiobook company, and Skydance Media, which teamed up with Paramount Pictures on “Top Gun: Maverick,” a Tom Cruise action drama that generated more than $1 billion.
Since Simon & Schuster was first put up for sale in 2020, many in the publishing industry have fretted over where the company might land. The publisher, which will celebrate its 100th anniversary next year, has had more than seven owners in its history.
A sale to another publisher would mean the new management would understand the book business. But it would also mean further consolidation in the industry, with potentially fewer players available to bid on big books, and the chance of layoffs as redundant jobs were eliminated. It could also raise regulatory scrutiny: Paramount’s first attempt to sell Simon & Schuster, to Penguin Random House, was derailed by government antitrust concerns.
Acquisition by a private equity firm, on the other hand, presents its own risks. The ruthless side of that business was immortalized in a 1989 book, “Barbarians at the Gate,” which detailed KKR’s acquisition of Nabisco and the burden the deal’s debt left on the company.
Gustavo Schwed, a management professor at New York University’s Stern School of Business, said the sale would allow KKR to invest in a business that was no longer viewed as core by its seller. But, like any private equity deal, the amount of debt KKR uses to finance the acquisition will help determine the publisher’s financial constraints.
“Sometimes, despite your best intentions, things crash and burn — and the more leverage you use, the more risk there is of that happening,” Mr. Schwed said.
KKR did not outline its financing plans on Monday. LionTree Advisors and Shearman & Sterling advised Paramount on the deal.
As part of the deal, Simon & Schuster employees will receive an ownership stake in the company, part of a program KKR developed to improve engagement among those who work in the companies it buys. The private equity firm used this model with RBMedia, which KKR acquired in 2018.
That bet paid off: KKR agreed to sell RBMedia last month to another investment firm for a substantially higher price. KKR said that under its ownership RBMedia doubled the size of its audiobook catalog, from over 31,000 to over 66,000 audiobooks.
Since employees had an ownership stake in the company, when RBMedia was sold, those who worked there earned a cash payout from the sale worth up to two times their salary, KKR said.
In addition to RBMedia, KKR has also invested in another company in the book world: Overdrive, a digital reading platform used in libraries and schools.
Pete Stavros, a co-head of global private equity at KKR, said in an interview that the deal would give Simon & Schuster employees the chance at achieving “a life-impacting amount of wealth.”
Mr. Stavros and Mr. Sarnoff said they saw opportunities for the publisher in international expansion and in audiobooks, a significant point of growth for the industry at large. Mr. Sarnoff said he didn’t expect the deal to have any impact on Simon & Schuster authors.
The road to Monday’s announcement has been long and bumpy.
After Paramount (then called ViacomCBS) reached an agreement to sell Simon & Schuster to Penguin Random House, the country’s largest book publisher, for $2.18 billion, the Biden administration challenged the sale in court. A judge sided with the government last year.
Rather than appeal, Paramount decided to put Simon & Schuster back on the market, obligating Penguin Random House to pay a $200 million termination fee for its trouble, on top of millions in legal costs.
Since the first deal crumbled, Simon & Schuster has performed well and remained an attractive purchase. In the first quarter of 2023, its sales rose to $258 million, up 19 percent from the prior year. Results at other major publishers, by contrast, were disappointing during that period.
Though KKR’s offer for the publisher is less than what Penguin Random House had agreed to pay, the difference in the price is partially offset by the termination fee paid to Paramount and earnings from the publisher. But KKR is an attractive buyer, in part, because it’s unlikely to raise red flags with regulators.
“Paramount doesn’t want to traipse through another deal that goes bust,” said Erik Gordon, a professor at the University of Michigan Ross School of Business. “It wants to sell the business without more surprises.”

Gearing up for the Road Ahead
Party
Ace-human rouge
Ryai- Elf Spellblade
Konguq- human wizard
Amethyst - Dwarf Fighter
Vodren- Human cleric
Billie- Human Barbarian
Amethyst tries to repair Headtaker by going to Billie's forge. After a very VERY heated exchange, it doesn't go as she planned.
While looking for work, the party hits up the trough. There they meet a group of nomads talking about the goblin wars. They decide to join up with the Nomads to help thier efforts and inform Stonebones about the goblins at the pond they failed to remove.
On the way back to the Inn , Konguq and Amethyst go to meet with Semolina Greenberry to try and arrange passage to Que-Teh. Meanwhile, Ryai, Ace, and Vodren get involved with feud between Billie and Jasper Fireforge over ownership of the forge. Jasper being Flint's brother, has claim to the forge. Billie however has no where else to go if she loses the forge, and claims that Flint never mentioned a brother.
Ryai, feeling for Billie, offers that they go and find Flint's family ring in Darken Wood to try and settle the feud. Mayor Branton Reese offers them a boon if they return with the ring and settle the feud.
In addition, Allon asks that the party finds a another wizards belongings that traveled with Flint. Rastlin, also went into Darken Wood and Allon tasked Konguq, Ace, and Amethyst to get his staff and spellbook back.
Semolina Greenberry also asked that Amethyst retrieve a zombie to bite one of her horses to see if they could make a zombie horse. She offered free rides for doing so.
A compromise is made for the party to pass through Darken Wood first, then make their way to Que-Teh to join the armies. The party makes preparations with Ace leaving his puppy Callum with Porkins, owner of the trough tavern.
Konguq leaves her penguin chick, Agratok, with Allon the wizard. From there the party gets ready to depart
