I struggle with art tutorials because they never tell me how they know to do whatever they're doing.

"we'll start with the highlights. Just add these wherever you like... Add some small lines like this"

Why? How do I know where to put those spots and lines? What are they there for? Will we be painting on top of them or off the side? What are the highlights purpose?

"Add some shading with the darker colors along here and wherever you think there needs to be some contrast"

What color are the shadows? How do I know how the shading should lay? How far do they extend? How do I avoid adding too much? How do I figure out where I want these shadows. What will they do? What should I consider when adding them?

TELL ME WHY THIS HAPPENS SO I CAN APPLY IT TO ANYTHING. PLEASE DO NOT JUST SHOW NE WHAT TO DO IM GOING INSANSE

I can’t believe I’m almost done! The hyperfocus actually kicked in when I needed it to, and I’ll have my partner’s anniversary gift ready in time. I’m just going to add more texture and colors to the background

I am not an artist, so please be kind! I just had materials from a previous hobby spree that didn’t go anywhere. Since I’m on medical leave and don’t have money for a gift, I decided to try painting his favorite character - Rebecca from Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. She’s the best girl

In art class we’re working on a self portrait exercise and this is one of my practice portraits. I was mostly working on laying down base colors, I still need to define the nose and other features, but I really like my color choice so far! The background is a tree so the green reflection makes the colors so interesting. I do also realize how unrealistic the proportions are… but we had less than two minutes to sketch a picture onto this A3 sheet… no judgie.

Anyway.. I really like it and I wanted to share something from my beginner skill set. I hope to get much better at painting. I just love it so so muchhhh.

Painted today! It didn't turn out how I wanted it to, but I'm rather fond of both of them anyways!

The bottom one I screwed up while sketching, so I changed it from looking over the shoulder, to just showing the back of the person. Then I also got the color wrong for the background, so I turned it into a painting warm up so I could be prepared when making the top one!

The last time I took actual art classes was when I was in second grade, so I think I've made a lot of progress over the last few weeks!

To fellow artists, who use non-digital methods:

This might sound weird, but if you struggling or don't like your paintings pleaspleaseplease try to buy art supplies of better quality. Especially better paper.

Just trust me. You are doing great. But sometimes poor quality materials are against you and as a result ruining your self-esteem.

I am no pastel artist, i am more of watercolour and digital person. But recently I've got a gift of pastel set and I've tried to use it on poor quality paper because I thought: well, the paper is for pastels, it should work. Aha hell no:

All the paintings that I did was shit. I almost gave up, I was so upset, so full of doubts. Until today I've bought different paper.

My dudes, I literally want to cry out of joy. I can’t stop painting!!! 🥲🥲🥲 And I have no one to share this, but this hellsite once again may save someone's day. Save another artist. And if so - my job here is done.

Please don't hate yourself. Don't judge yourself too hard. Be kind to your art, because you are wonderful and your art is wonderful. And if you struggling please 🙏 just take a deep breath and try another method or better material.
