I know Black Acres is discontinued, but if you’re comfortable answering, I would love to know how you pictured it ending? Did reader finally escape for good? Or did Al get his fucked up little fairy tale ending?
Hmm hmmm well, I’d optimistically like to say I’ll eventually finish it, but I don’t see myself getting that drive back, so I’ll go ahead and share!
I was a bit torn and kind of toying around with both ideas. Ultimately, I like the idea of the victim never giving in. Where Stockholm syndrome will be more of a theme in NCM, in ITB, there’s a strong theme about willpower and determination. But I also didn’t want to do the stereotypical happy ending (even if Y/N deserves one!).
I had planned to more than likely end it with it implying that Y/N never escapes Al, but also never fully gives in. So it’s kind of a sad ending for both of them, actually, because Y/N never gets to get away from him and live her life, but Al never gets the satisfaction of breaking her, and spends the rest of their time together having to stay on his toes, because if she gets a chance to leave, she’s taking it.
I also thought about doing something where Al manipulated her into pretending to be someone else and living life with him as a married couple, to allow her to go out in public with him, just never unsupervised (he likely would threaten to kill some innocent people if she tells the truth to anyone while they’re out and about). So that she has more activity outside the home, but is still tied to him.
In the end I think I’d have disappointed all the readers, both those who wanted Al to win or Y/N to escape. Because he never “wins,” he just gets to keep her. And she doesn’t escape, but she’s never his.
I had also considered writing some alternate endings, so I could explore what could have happened otherwise, and thought about doing some mini side stories with the other characters (Lori, April, Max).
But yeah, that’s the gist of it! I figure y’all deserve to at least know the ending I had planned. I just don’t think there are enough stories where the Reader doesn’t eventually fall for the villain, and never gives in. I think she eventually gets some soft spots for Al and is able to tolerate him more, but at the end of the day, he ruined her life twice and brutally murdered the actual love of her life in front of her. That’s realistically not something that could be forgiven (especially since Al never owns up to it/has any sincere remorse), so I don’t think she would ever come around to loving him.

The Green Acres Court of Dallas, Texas opened in 1950, at a time when Dallas was 90% white, and closed in the late 70s, after co-owner Redmon Revis died.
At one time, it was one of the only motels in the city that welcomed black people and was featured in the Green Book. Prominent guests included Ray Charles and Etta James. The city's Landmark Commission briefly pushed to save it but when that didn't work, it was suggested that the new owners erect some sort of memorial to recognize the motel's significance instead.
It was replaced by a new development. Not saying it doesn't exist but I was unable to locate a memorial on the property.

Hunter Heroici haunts me, because it says chasing happiness can’t be solely about running away
i.e. you have to face your actions and integrate the good and the bad parts of your psyche
Apple Pie Life for Sam is, in this view, a meager half-life, a false “Charming Acres” wrapped in golden hues, like a happy gas that blots out all the harder parts of living. Compared to Hunting, the Romanticized Home Life is The Balm of Escape.
And in this same episode, we have Cas goofing off with the whole “becoming a hunter and interrogating the cat” stuff. He’s having a grand ole time and he knows he’s Being Silly with it. Here, the Idealized Hunting with Friends Life is Cas's Apple Pie, The Balm of Escape from brutal soldierhood.
As mirage-home is to Sam, silly-hunting is to Cas. (Here, perhaps Sam & Dean are Cas’s symbolic Ben & Lisa, which is also why he tends to want to shield them from harsh world of Heavenly War.)
The specter of The Apple Pie life, when carried to its extreme, can be a false, idealized happiness. (It's not happiness itself that is the problem. It's that it's not an integrated happiness when it's weighted too far into escapism.) This "fantasy-life” is in sharp contrast to the messy business of living your life as your complicated, imperfect self and showing all your warts to those around you.
And yet it’s important to note that the tempting traps of penance & suicide loom large in this season, too...
Dean's blood-donation (coded-as-organ-donation-in-the-form-of-a-cooler) symbolizes his tendency to sustain the life of Others at his own expense; i.e. sustaining Benny’s addiction-in-order-to-keep-him-on-the-straight-and-narrow (and even bearing some of Sam’s parallel struggles)
Dean's simplified Purgatory world of black-and-white kill-or-be-killed (no-mistakes-can-be-made-here-no-one-can-let-me-down-here) is his False Answer to ending the difficult decision-making associated with hunting in a complex world AND maladaptively dealing with disappointment
Cas's staying-behind-in-Purgatory is metaphorical-suicide for what he did to Heaven (and yet, Heaven comes to rescue him; he cannot escape)
Later, Cas's Heaven trials are his False Answer to ending the difficult decision-making associated with Endless Heavenly Wars
And of course, Sam's Hell trials are his False Answer to ending the difficult decision-making associated with hunting in a world overrun with threats
These are ALL different kinds of extremes of “checking out of life,” and they will all learn that this extreme of not integrating both the Good & Bad parts, and of giving up Self to serve Others, is as unsustainable as is diving into the drunken happy kind of escapism.
It's about integration: family + past actions + mistakes + internal wants + personal needs + duty & obligations.
The path to the Apple Pie Life is in obliterating its Romanticization. The path to Penance is in truly valuing the Imperfect Self.

14th January 2024: Acres Down in the New Forest and home
Photos taken in this set today are of: 1, 3, 5, 8, 9 and 10. Beautiful views on a rich sunny winter afternoon, where I was captivated by stunning sun kissed views of woodland and bog/heath areas with holly bushes, imposing pines, the sun shining through trees and a crescent new moon seen standing out. 2 and 12. The Black Redstart out the back before going out today, it was incredible to as I wondered if it might see this phenomenal bird that came in the garden yesterday return. It was thrilling to see again, really appreciating its red in the tail. 4. Beautiful sunlit gorse. 6. A flamboyant Firecrest which it was an absolute joy to see at least one of as hoped today. A wonderful bird to see I felt so lucky to, only the fourth time I've ever seen one now seeing them in back to back years after seeing one here last year and I am thrilled today to take my first ever photos of one. It's great that not only is there still so many birds and other wildlife in the UK I've not seen but also species I have seen that I'm yet to photograph or haven't much as it feels so nice to break new ground when I do. Another smashing bird to see this year so far. 7. Blue Tit which it was great to see in the garden today. 11. My first Stock Dove of the year in a tree where I saw one last year so it was great that I saw this bird as hoped when looking ahead to coming here today, a sweet bird I always enjoy seeing.
I got one more fantastic year tick today when getting exhilirating views of at least one Brambling high in the trees, another colourful delight to take my year list to a pleasing 97 after one of the best weekends of my life. Other highlights at Acres Down today were ravishing Raven and Buzzard including having a bit of a battle in the air on a lovely sunny afternoon, Chaffinches, Coal and Long-tailed Tit, lovely Treecreeper, great views of a Dunnock upon arrival, Robin, Blackbird, Song Thrush, New Forest Ponies and Grey Squirrel. On the way and way back today I got great views of Buzzard, Great White Egret and Little Egret. Other highlights at home today were Goldfinches, Woodpigeon, Collared Dove, Starling and Carrion Crow with a fair few birds seen well from home and skimmia.

Malcolm & Marie (2021, Sam Levinson)
08/03/2024
Malcolm & Marie is a 2021 film written and directed by Sam Levinson.
It was the first film to be completed after the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
After the preview screening of his latest film as director, Malcolm returns home with his girlfriend Marie; here the two begin to reveal facts to each other that will put their relationship to the test.
The film was shot in secret in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic between June 17 and July 2, 2020 in California, within a single thirty-three-acre property with the approval of the Writers Guild of America, Directors Guild of America and Screen Actors Guild unions.
The black and white film was shot on 35 millimeter film.
The first trailer of the film was released on January 8, 2021.
The film was distributed starting from February 5, 2021 on the Netflix platform, which purchased the rights to the film for thirty million dollars.
On the aggregator Rotten Tomatoes the film receives 57% of positive professional reviews with an average rating of 6.3 out of 10 based based on 245 critics, while on Metacritic it obtains a score of 53 out of 100 based on 42 criticisms.
Charles Bramesco of Little White Lies gave the film a score of 1 out of 5, calling it a "clumsy, horribly over-the-top talkathon"; David Ehrlich of IndieWire gave it a C+; Empire touts the film as a "great sentimental drama"; for BBC.com "Levinson recalls many dramas about bad relationships, such as Scenes from a Marriage, Story of a Marriage and above all Who's Afraid of Virgilia Woolf?, giving a restyling to the genre thanks to the great performances, going as far as including new themes such as racism and Hollywood."
