RWRB FirstPrince Single Parent & Parent Recs

My favorite single parent or parent recs below!
I Dissent! by Mel_1999. G, 1.4k. A police officer is coming to give a safety talk at school and, as a lawyer, Alex has a lot of things to say about it. Those things include planning an entire presentation for their son's class about their constitutional rights.
Henry is horrified, but supportive.
The Evening Routine by TuppingLiberty. T, 1.8k. Henry comes home late and joins Alex and their daughter, Isabella, in their night-time routine. Domestic fluff with a fade-to-black sex scene and adult language, so rated T.
(even though you want to) please try to never grow up by @coffeecatsme. T, 1.8k. “You better have a good fucking reason for sending me to voicemail, Hen.” He glares at the phone for one second before he actually sees the screen, and then his face melts into something Henry can only describe as fond. “Oh,” he whispers, dropping his mug of coffee onto the counter so he can lean in closer to the phone. “Look who’s there.”
“Yeah.” Henry keeps his voice so low he isn’t even sure Alex can hear him. He doesn’t seem to mind, eyes taking in the picture in front of him with parted lips, the edge of his finger covering the camera when he undoubtedly reaches to caress his daughter’s head.
Or, Alex misses his daughter when he goes back to work after a long paternity leave.
(We) Loved Her First by @hgejfmw-hgejhsf. G, 2k. When I thought about all of the things I wanted to say to you both today, my initial urge was to write a letter. I could borrow Dad’s fountain pen from his top desk drawer and watch the ink soak slowly into the cardstock paper, to blow it dry and carefully crease it in three places before sliding it into an envelope and sealing it with the wax seal Papa bought a few years back, that he said we could use to send our Christmas cards to Sandringham in a more formal way so that Uncle Pip wouldn’t expect to find us wearing matching Christmas tree onesies inside.
But then I realized, a letter isn’t your style. It isn’t our style. Your story, the same story weaved together countless times throughout my life into a tapestry of your love that blanketed me at night whenever I needed comforting, was told through a series of pixels swirling through the air and crossing the void of space and time within moments. So, I decided it was only fitting to continue that tradition and to follow in your footsteps…an email, it is.
OR
Alex and Henry's daughter sends them an email just before they walk her down the aisle on her wedding day.
Teachable Moments by @everwitch-magiks. T, 2.1k. Alex is a single dad. His daughter, Elena, is as curious as she’s clever and quite a handful. Luckily, Alex has a solid support system—he can always count on Elena’s aunts, as well as on her kindergarten teacher. Her very wonderful, very attractive kindergarten teacher.
But kindergarten doesn't last forever.
even children get older by blueberriesandcream. G, 2.2k. on her grandchildren's first day of school, ellen claremont looks at alex and has some regrets. (alex makes it better for everyone.)
Giving Yourself Grace by TuppingLiberty. T, 2.9k. Isabella is very young, and Alex is home alone with her for the first time while Henry is away for the shelter. He learns some dark truths about himself when he struggles to help Isabella.
fully booked by riversdeep. T, 3.2k. A hand tugs at Henry’s sweater as he’s rearranging the Austen section, and he smiles, abandoning his books and crouching down. “Hello, Sophia.”
Today, Sophia's decked out in a Spiderman costume, complete with a matching tiny backpack and camera.
“Hi, Mister Henry.”
“Yeah, hi, Mister Henry.”
Henry laughs, heart impossibly warm. “Hello to you too, Alex. The books are on the counter, I’ve had them set aside for you.”
A little off the top by @clottedcreamfudge. T, 3.4k. “How old's David? Mine's almost 4 and she's cute but a lot of work.”
“Oh! He's 5 – it was his birthday last week, actually.”
“No kidding? Did you have a party?”
God, this man sees right through him. “With cake and invitations and a themed piñata, for my sins,” he confesses. “Does that make me awfully gauche?”
“Nope,” Alex says, popping the 'p' and winking at Henry's reflection. “But that might mostly be 'cause I have no idea what that means.”
Henry has literally never had such a good time while having his hair cut.
look in the mirror (and show me who you see) by blueberriesandcream. G, 3.5k. henry comes home to find alex in a predicament when their daughter gets bubble gum in his hair
Lost and Found by @sherryvalli. T, 3.9k. “Now, I don’t know about you, but I distinctly remember telling you to stay.”
“Sorry,” she said, not sounding very sorry at all. Henry made a mental note to teach her how to at least pretend to be contrite.
“You’re… she - you can speak English?”
Henry looked up. The man was turned towards him now. His eyes were the first thing Henry noticed. Wide and a deep brown, with impossibly long and dark eyelashes that seemed to touch his cheeks every time he blinked. And his mouth - it was open now in surprise and disbelief, but it was perfectly curved and bitten pink, and Henry had no problem picturing it curled into a smirk. A handsome serial killer, then.
Single dad Henry loses his daughter at the Met and ends up finding more than he bargained for.
kiss me on this cold december night by blackrose1002. M, 4.7k. “Hey, can I get an Americano to go? With double espresso?”
Even though he’s not working the register – because he’s making the bloody gingerbread nightmares – the simple order is enough to catch Henry’s attention and he looks up.
He immediately wishes he didn’t.
Right there, currently paying for his normal, boring coffee, is a man that’s possibly the most beautiful man Henry has ever seen. With his dark curls and beautiful brown eyes, eyelashes so long they don’t seem real and a smile lighting up his entire face, the man is simply stunning.
Henry would make anything for him.
Any coffee, including the goddamn gingerbread latte.
Or his bed, after getting thoroughly fucked into his mattress.
(Or the one where Henry works as a barista and one day the most beautiful man in the world orders the most boring coffee and saves Henry's sanity)
Isn't she lovely, isn't she wonderful by Liloandbitch. M, 5.6k. No one will ever believe him when he tells them Henry said the word DILF.
that's the way love goes by @waterloolovers. M, 6.3k. “Daddy. I want a little sister,” Dani had announced one day. Henry choked on his tea while Alex dropped the spatula straight onto the floor. “Um.” Henry cleared his throat. “Your papi and I will have to talk about that, okay?”
The Eternal Struggle by Celaestis. T, 6.7k. "Love, we can't put 'gender is a social construct, bitches' on an official royal birth announcement."
Five times parenthood beat Henry and Alex, and one time they won parenting.
Secret Ingredient by floatingaway4. T, 8.2k. It’s not unusual for the shelters to call each other when they need temporary space. Henry doesn’t normally take children that young, but he can accommodate them in an emergency. He just has to make sure the staff keeps an eye on this kid.
What could possibly go wrong?
Oh what a laugh it would have been by @hgejfmw-hgejhsf. E, 11k. When Alex dresses as Santa Claus on Christmas Eve, their five-year-old daughter makes an extra special, last-minute Christmas wish. AND
Alex leaves his Santa suit on for a private evening with Henry while everyone else is snug in their beds.
in paper rings, in picture frames, in latte art series by coffeecatsme. T, 15k. “You little menace,” a voice says from the door, entirely too fond to be anything mean. “I told you to wait by the car, not go inside.” The man steps inside, shaking the rain from his hair, and Henry is treated to the sight of the most beautiful man he’s seen in his entire life, standing in the middle of his shop with clothes dripping to the floor and raincoat bundled up around him. He notices then the umbrella clutched in the little boy’s hand, the innocent wide eyes watching his father, and the picture forms in his head.
Or, five times Henry makes a piece of art for Alex's son on his drinks, and one time he does it for Alex himself.
Confidential Memorandum by sherryvalli.  T, 17k. "Hello, Mr. Fox-Mountchristen's office. How may I help you?"
"Hello, can I speak to Mr. Fox-Mount-krishen, please?"
Alex blinked. After two weeks of hearing nothing but the voices of snooty men and frazzled secretaries calling in, the person on the other line now sounded decidedly neither snooty nor male nor in any way adult.
It was a little girl.
"Mr. Fox-Mountchristen's unfortunately in a meeting right now,” Alex began slowly, “but I could take a message?"
"Oh." The girl paused. "You're not Mr. Hunter."
Alex starts a new job as Henry's new assistant. Henry's daughter keeps calling the office and leaving him messages.
Longer Than Most by @happinessofthepursuit. E, 26k. “Oh,” Alex says. “Sick.”
Henry can’t help but grin. He can’t believe he’s so bloody gone on a man who says sick and dude, who he’s slept with all of one time and proceeded to knock him up. Henry’s a cliche, honestly.
“It is, indeed, sick, as you say.”
Alex rolls his eyes, but his cheeks darken a shade, giving him away a bit. “Listen, the closest I get to poetry is your fucking face. Excuse me if my vocabulary doesn’t quite compare to yours.”
Or, Alex and Henry have a one night stand. That is, until a baby’s involved.
Family Lines series by @cultofsappho. T, 41k. Henry turned his attention back to the girl in front of him, she seemed to be pivoting from star-stuck to actual distress. “Are you okay?”
"I'm gay!" She blurted the words out before slapping a hand over her mouth like she couldn’t believe what she’d just said.
Henry chuckles, his cheeks flushing pink. "Me too."
Henry and Alex had been thinking about fostering for years now, they were just waiting for the right kid to (aparently literally) fall into their life.
True Love Stories Never Have Endings series by @historicallysam. E, 69k. “The beauty of love is that you can fall into it with the most unexpected person at the most unexpected time.” - Ritu Ghatourey
Henry expects the coming school year to be much the same as the previous ones. He couldn't be more wrong.
orion in your fingertips series by acastle. E, 168k. “She truly is your daughter, Alex,” Henry sighs, defeated.
“Fuck off, sweetheart,” he laughs, a soundbite of the sun. Henry forces himself not to physically react, the term of endearment sweet and menacingly familiar coming from Alex’s lips. It’s been years. “You know they’re useful.”
“Ah yes, eyelashes, truly a formidable instrument in managing international relations.”
Alex grins, and Henry is too late to catch the slightest downward lilt on the corner of his mouth, “Worked on you once, didn’t it?”
Oh, did that ache.
(Much had happened since the time Henry had told Alex to leave. Alex had passed the bar, gotten married, had the most beautiful daughter. And Henry, well. He stayed right where he was.)

'We're reclaiming these traditions': Black women embrace the spiritual realm
There's a revived fascination with witchcraft and the occult. For Black women, mysticism’s appeal is about empowerment and taking up space in a world that often marginalizes them.

Afros. Saris. Sphinxes. Rainbows.
These are some of the striking images found in actress Rachel True’s new tarot deck and guidebook — “True Heart Intuitive Tarot” — released this month with a decidedly multicultural bent. Best known for her starring roles in the 1996 cult hit “The Craft” and the 2002 sitcom “Half & Half,” True has studied tarot for most of her life and wanted her guide to reflect the diversity of her New York City birthplace.
True’s tarot cards, illustrated by Toronto artist Stephanie Singleton, stand out for their inclusive imagery.
“I wanted it to be representative of the world around us,” said True, a rare woman of color to release a deck with a major publisher (Houghton Mifflin), who in 2017 completed a stint as a tarot reader at the House of Intuition in Los Angeles. “I just wanted to have as many skin tones and flavors as we could possibly get in there, and I’m happy about that because I know, for me, when I was reading books and looking at decks, they were all very homogenous.”
Having gained popularity as a parlor game in 15th century Italy — though some have linked them to Mamluk playing cards from Turkey and mystical imagery from Egypt — tarot cards are now widely used for divination and include symbolism that reflect life’s lessons and challenges. But the most established tarot decks have a European aesthetic, which can make it difficult for people of color to connect with them.
Fans have already told True that her collection, which contains both personal essays and card interpretations, is their first time purchasing a metaphysical product by a Black person. Born to a Black mother and a white Jewish father, the actress calls her book release no “small feat” for a woman of color.

Rachel True may be known for her iconic role in "The Craft," but her work in tarot has provided a source for healing herself and helping others.Houghton Mifflin
True follows in the footsteps of other Black artists and creatives such as Courtney Alexander, Manzel Bowman and Tayannah Lee McQuillar who have released tarot decks highlighting Black beauty, culture and experiences in just the last four years. These creators are part of a shift among Black people embracing the mystical and “the dark”: According to the Pew Research Center, the percentage of Black people who identify as spiritual but not religious rose from 19 percent in 2012 to 26 percent in 2017, which is roughly the same percentage of Americans overall who now identify this way.
Black women in particular have launched Black girl magik meetups, witchcraft conventions, hoodoo festivals and goth clothing lines. In addition to writing about tarot, they’ve written books about witchcraft, astrology and the Black gothic, tying these traditions to their cultural and artistic heritage.
But the desire to heal is the major reason these practices appeal to Black women, according to Yvonne P. Chireau, a professor and chair of the religion department at Swarthmore College and author of the 2003 book “Black Magic: Religion and the African American Conjuring Tradition.”
“Black women seem to have more of what I would call an orientation to the therapeutic, and that has been consistent,” Chireau said. “It’s not just about women’s power and witchcraft, and all these wonderful things that the white feminists were about. For almost every Black woman that I know who’s involved in any of these traditions, it comes down to the purpose of this work is ultimately about healing — and not just bodies but healing spirits. So, you won’t necessarily find them out there trying to do spells to remove Donald Trump.”
"For almost every Black woman that I know who’s involved in any of these traditions, it comes down to the purpose of this work is ultimately about healing — and not just bodies but healing spirits," said Yvonne Chireau, author and an associate professor of religion at Swarthmore College.Courtesy Yvonne Chireau
That’s a reference to the widespread media attention mostly white feminist witches garnered in 2017 for their ongoing spell to “bind” Trump — using a photo of him, the Tower tarot card, a candle and other accoutrements — until his exit from office. The spell highlighted the link between second-wave feminism and the New Age movement, both of which have faced criticism for sidelining and appropriating people of color. Since Black women were never centered in these movements, it’s not surprising that their current interest in mysticism may have more to do with healing themselves and their communities than with the current occupant of the White House.
An admirer of the Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung, True regards tarot decks as essentially “a shrink in a box.” In her book, she recounts how tarot helped her process a difficult childhood. She said her exposure to books such as Jung’s “Man and His Symbols” and Nietzsche’s “Beyond Good and Evil,” along with the tarot, helped to ground her as she grew up.
“You can look at them, and see where they hit you on a visceral level,” she said of the tarot. “I follow a Jungian tradition of tarot, so my interpretation tends to lead you down the path to examining yourself because if there’s one thing I know it’s that I can’t change anyone else. I can only work with myself and shift my own behaviors and perceptions. That’s why I like tarot.”
Although True is passionate about tarot, she doesn’t view it as a practice of the occult, a term she said has negative connotations. Instead, she views tarot as a way for people to tap into their intuition. Similarly, she doesn’t identify as a witch, despite playing one of Hollywood’s most iconic African American witches — Rochelle in “The Craft.” The follow-up to that film, “The Craft: Legacy,” debuted this week and will likely introduce a younger generation to the 1996 version as well.
New Yorker Mya Spalter grew up watching the original “Craft” and appreciating seeing a witch of color. Growing up with a Black Catholic mother and a white Jewish father, Spalter said that she can’t remember not feeling like a witch — “I was always a weird kid” — because of her love of nature. It helped that neither of her parents emphasized their religion to her or made her feel that any form of spirituality was off limits.
She ended up working at New York City’s oldest occult shop, Enchantments, and wrote a 2018 book about the experience and the basics of witchcraft, “Enchantments: A Modern Witch’s Guide to Self-Possession.” With humorous pop culture asides, especially about the ’90s R&B group Bell Biv DeVoe, Spalter’s book not only demystifies witchcraft but also sends the message that one can be a practicing pagan using common household ingredients such as salt, lemon and olive oil—a contrast to the Instagram witch aesthetic where photos of altars with expensive crystals, feathers and stones get thousands of likes.
New Yorker Mya Spalter rejects the idea that all witchcraft needs to be Instagram-ready.Courtesy Mya Spalter
The idea that a witch has to look a certain way, have a photo-ready altar or identify with Celtic traditions are some of the reasons Spalter said people of color hesitate to label themselves witches. Instead, they might identify with religions or folk practices rooted in traditional African spirituality such as Santería, Vodou or hoodoo. Others might not be fully aware of their family’s connection to such religious practices. Spalter said that some people have lightbulb moments: “Wait a minute — witchcraft — is that like what my grandpa did?”
The term “witch” has both a cultural and social meaning, Chireau said. “As for my own understanding,” she explained. “I think that a witch is a person who claims the power to heal and to harm, by spiritual and magical means.”
When her book “Black Magic” was first published nearly 20 years ago, she said, few others had written about the history of African American healing traditions such as rootwork and hoodoo. Now, Chireau is not seeing scholarly works about these customs so much as she’s seeing a wave of how-to books from Black women about various mystical practices—from folk magic to astrology to tarot. And on social media, she encounters many people who are spiritually eclectic, meaning they might follow a West African religion like Ifá but also practice astrology.

Former Atlanta fire chief suggests slavery was part of God’s plan for America
Historically, African Americans have weaved in aspects of Indigenous African spirituality with Christianity, making the mix of religious practices a tradition in Black communities. But Hollywood has long demonized traditional African religions in horror films and TV shows, a reflection of the way these spiritual practices were regarded in larger society.
“We didn’t know anything about African religions, which is where it all starts, right?” Chireau said. Those who practiced these faiths were often shown as “awful, pagan, idol-worshipping heathens who happen to be Black, and so you can rationalize enslaving them.” When magic is portrayed on screen, she added, “you don’t see the healer or the hard work of healing.”
Mecca Woods, author of the 2018 book “Astrology for Happiness and Success” bristles at how Black witches in film and TV shows are routinely portrayed as evil or have “unfortunate demises.” As a Black woman astrologer, she’s sometimes subjected to reductive or negative stereotypes, like being called Miss Cleo — the late spokeswoman for a psychic telephone hotline.
After the publication of her book, which shows readers how they can use astrology in their everyday lives, Black people reached out to tell her how excited they were to read an astrology book by a Black woman. Thelma Balfour’s 1996 book, “Black Sun Signs: An African-American Guide to the Zodiac” was one of the last astrology texts by a Black woman to garner significant attention.
Mecca Woods has practiced astrology for a decade and also hosts a podcast on the subject.Schaun Champion
“I remember gravitating to it because it was a Black woman who was writing about astrology, and I had never seen anything else like it before on the market,” said Woods, who has practiced astrology for a decade and also hosts a podcast on the subject.
Although some Black people, especially religious conservatives, may hesitate to embrace any form of divination, Woods said that the Black people she encounters have grown more open to what she labels “esoterica.” They are realizing, she said, that these traditions have always existed: “We’re in a space right now where we’re reclaiming these traditions.”
The American gothic is one tradition that Leila Taylor reclaims as heavily African American in her 2019 book “Darkly: Black History and America’s Gothic Soul.” The violence and dehumanization Black people endured during slavery and segregation have haunted them — and the nation overall — influencing their music, literature and other cultural artifacts.
“Toni Morrison’s ‘Beloved’ is a gothic novel; it’s a ghost story, it’s a haunted house story,” Taylor said. “It is influenced by a true story having to do with the horrors and the terrors and the ramifications of slavery. And the same thing with ‘Strange Fruit.’ Beautiful song with this combination of the scent of magnolias sweet and fresh and then this horror — this kind of grotesque imagery, the smell of burning flesh. It was inspired by an actual specific lynching.”
Black Americans have lived with fear, anger and sorrow for generations, said author Leila Taylor, and those emotions inevitably seeped into their art. Courtesy Leila Taylor.
Black Americans have lived with fear, anger and sorrow for generations, Taylor said, and those emotions inevitably seeped into their art. Across racial groups, however, Taylor has noticed a pronounced fascination with witchcraft and the occult. For Black women specifically, mysticism’s appeal is about empowerment and taking up space in a world that often marginalizes them. But the attraction to darkness, Taylor said, is also rooted in healing trauma. The recent wave of Black horror movies and television shows have allowed African Americans to confront their fears in a safe space, she explained.
For the horror movie star True, tarot has been that safe space. It not only helps her to self-soothe and make better decisions, it also connects her to the “old ways” of experiencing life.
“For Black people, let’s think about a time not that long ago where we really didn’t like to go to doctors, and we certainly didn’t go to therapists,” True said. “So that old woman in the neighborhood who could tell you something about yourself — she was the therapist, right? That’s been a long tradition in Black American history, so I believe some of the old ways are in tandem with what people believe now.”

So this is what I talked about two days ago about Emma and Clea. The spoilers I saw merely showed the first and last panel, so it seemed to me that Emma was quite rude to Clea, but when you see that she explained why they can’t bring Stephen back, it's more... acceptable, I suppose?
I still don’t like Emma’s tone, though. It doesn’t matter if Clea will be a better or worse Sorcerer Supreme because she’s alive, she loves Stephen and wants him back, and Clea is RIGHT about Stephen. So right that allow me to pull a card called “Stephen assisted Emma before”.
Tumblr media
From X-Men - To Serve and Protect #3
Emma’s advice is not cutting it because few heroes were able to see his importance as Sorcerer Supreme, and I legit can count them on my fingers: Blade, Black Cat, Ben Riley, Moon Knight... and that’s it. Of course, along with the magic community, which should have a bigger role in this but okay.
I know they can’t help Clea but a bit of support wouldn’t hurt. I just hope the X-Men (the actual team) is more sensitive about it. I don’t like the Quiet Council anyways, and the new team has Magik so there’s a little bit of hope. But I’m not expecting much from them. Stephen will be back in the main book, that much is obvious. I just wonder if other heroes will help in some way.

my ideas for attie's marvel snap card (+ locations inspired by him)
SPIN!
cost: 4
power: 6
abilities:
hmm... maybe, if there's only one card in the opposing lane, his card can move your opponent's card to a different lane randomly?
or maybe, when his card is moved to a different lane, all the other cards in that lane gains +2 power?
or perhaps, when his card is placed down in a lane, any of the other cards in that lane can be moved once?
or he moves to a new lane, all the cards in that lane that have on-reveal abilities are reactivated again?
additional: i think his card should have cool effects!! especially spinning when his card is used or when he moves lanes. i think it'd be call if his card had a voice effect, and i think it'd be funny if there was a variant card where his card displayed a photo of atticus wearing a t-shirt with 'x-men' handwritten on it (a reference to his bio).
LOCATION:
• The Garden!
effect: maybe... by placing cards here, their power is doubled but their abilities are ineffective.
• Sydney!
effect: the first player to place an on-reveal card here gets +3 energy.
i hope this makes sense and sounds cool haha!!
THIS IS SO COOL OH MY GOD? I'M SMILING SO HARD RN. your mind, its amazing
i do love the idea that his card moves people around. i read the Magik card and i love the idea of those two having synergy by him sending cards to limbo. the randomly makes sense as game design lmao, dont want him to be too good by being able to purposefully moving someone too often.
The Garden is weird (a side effect of me not explaining it super well ig, my bad) i love the idea here, since that makes sense for what The Garden does to other people (nulls psychics, magic, etc) but I do like the idea that it can revive a unit that was already defeated (but at half power) since that's what it does to Atticus when he dies. I don't know if that's too strong for marvel snap though, I've only played a little bit.
man i would love for him to have a cry lmao, its not cool or impressive or anything, it's just panic. The shirt is very good too, i think he'd easily have a few alternate arts since in my head he has:
His current look, the dorky-looking school teacher
His og New Mutants look from when he was a teenager
His new mask and jacket from The New Day (this is self-indulgent but cmon)
and then the comic sans shirt
i think my only thing is that his power should be lower, he's not a great fighter and i like the idea that he sets up illyana to do more damage then him.
the only idea for an atticus and illyana magic thing is a partner combo (which means that they can search each other and can be your commanders together) Illyana is red and black' which are the 'evil' colours and related to chaos and fighting, and Atticus is blue and white; community focused and academically minded (and a little bit annoying)
illyana sends people to limbo and deals damage, while atticus warps in and draws you cards and gains life. there's definitely more there but im still thinking through it lmao

✨PICK A CARD REVEAL✨ Pile 1 (Black Tourmaline) ACE OF CUPS: There is a new emotional offer in your future because you are opening up and making space as you maneuver through your own personal healing process. You might be feeling more at peace, happier or more joyful as you move through your day even though nothing specific is happening to cause these feelings. Continue to call in new emotional experiences bit by bit. Allowing yourself to feel happy “for no reason” will bring reason into your life and environment quickly. . Pile 2 (Malachite) THE WORLD: Completion is here. Some of you may be fighting the end of something but it time to release and let go. You have learned the lesson you were meant o learn or you have been the catalyst in the great wheel. Remember that you are part of the bigger picture and use this time to work towards the things you have control over at this time. Some of you want desperately to hold on to something that isn’t working “just in case” but the lesson here is when it rolls back around you might not want it anymore. . My Little Marvels
I got really bored and decided to make up what the cutie marks for the X-Men would be if they were My Little Ponies, then some other Marvel characters too. A cutie mark is that little thing the ponies have on their butts. Most of these are just very obvious references to their powers, rather than their personalities, but feel free to say you think they should have something else instead of what I picked, or to add characters that I did not include! X-MEN & NEW MUTANTS Storm: A lightning bolt Rogue: A pair of white gloves Psylocke: Her pink psychic butterfly Phoenix: Originally, it’s her yellow Marvel Girl mask, but later becomes the Phoenix symbol Emma Frost: A diamond Dazzler: A light star/flash Longshot: His throwing knives, or a light flash to match Dazzler’s Shatterstar: His swords crossed over each other in an X, or his black star marking Cable: A big honking gun Bishop: Also a big honking gun Wolverine: A cigar and a beer Nightcrawler: Two rapiers crossed in an “X” over a Catholic cross Cyclops: His sunglasses Havok: The target-type symbol he has on his costome Gambit: Playing cards, or just the Ace of Hearts Prof X: An open hand holding out an X-logo Archangel: Originally a white feather as Angel, then a skull as Death, then a black feather in two pieces as Archangel Beast: A laboratory beaker; could also be Moira MacTaggert’s mark Iceman: A popsicle Warpath: The Thunderbird symbol from his costume Colossus: A paintbrush Mirage: A bear, both to reference the Demon Bear story but also her connection with animals. Alternatively, a red wolf, symbolizing her link with Wolfsbane. Wolfsbane: A Scottish cross Cannonball: A cannon or a pickaxe (because he was a miner) Sunspot: A soccer ball Karma: The pink halo effect of her powers Magik: It’s originally a snowflake, but becomes the Soulsword as Magik and an upside-down pentagram as Darkchylde Cypher: ABC blocks Magma: A flaming crown Lila Cheney: A guitar Domino: A domino BROTHERHOOD & ACOLYTES Magneto: His helmet Mystique: A little skull Toad: A toad Scarlet Witch: Her hex bolts Quicksilver: Silver swooshy speed marks Exodus: Crusader’s cross Fabian Cortez: A knife stabbing through a crown HELLFIRE CLUB & HELLIONS Sebastian Shaw: Dollar signs Shinobi Shaw: Wine bottle Selene: Flaming crown (shows her relation to Magma while also fitting her too) Catseye: A purple kitty silhouette Tarot: A tarot card Roulette: Black and red poker chips Jetstream: A jetstream trail Empath: Sinister, solid purple eyes Bevatron: Blue electric bolts Beef: A dumbbell OTHER VILLAINS Mojo: A TV (also I can’t actually imagine a pony Mojo, and I hope you can’t either) Madelyne Pryor: Originally a plane, since she was a pilot, becomes the Phoenix symbol but in black after she becomes a bad guy Reverend William Stryker: Spiral: Six swords Mr. Sinister: A syringe full of blood Apocalypse: A blue ankh AVENGERS Captain America: His shield Thor: His hammer Black Widow: A black widow Captain Marvel: Her star symbol from the costume
INHUMANS Black Bolt: The little tuning fork thing he wears on her forehead Medusa: A hairbrush Crystal: Fire and water intertwined Maximus: Gorgon: A beer mug Karnak: The symbols from his face Triton: A green fish Inferno: A flaming guitar Naja: A flying lizard Lockjaw: A dog bone Ms. Marvel: The lightning bolt symbol from her costume
MISC Spider-Man: A spider Black Cat: A black cat Cloak: His cloak Dagger: One of her light daggers

New Mutants: How Magik and Lockheed Fit Into the X-Men Franchise’s Evolution
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
This article contains New Mutants spoilers.
The New Mutants, now available to watch on streaming, is the final outing in Fox’s eclectic X-Men film franchise. While Marvel Studios’ finally confirmed Deadpool 3 is a wild card in how it connects to anything, that’s in Disney’s hands now. Otherwise, we have 13 movies in 20 years celebrating superpowers as a metaphor for real-life prejudice. But only in the end, did the X-Men franchise really start to open up to a universe where mutants aren’t the explanation to everything outlandish.
One of the reasons the Avengers movies worked out so well was the contrast. It was a tech super-genius, a super-soldier from another era, a science-based anger monster, a Norse god, and two hyper-competent humans teaming up against an alien invasion. This felt fresh and right for a comic book universe. For X-Men, they didn’t embrace such an idea until it was too late.
Being from the Marvel comic universe, X-Men has always shared continuity with otherworldly concepts from other walks of life. And while the movies didn’t include connections to the larger Marvel Universe, even the X-Men properties themselves eventually strayed off from the mutant gene.
Think back to X-Men: The Last Stand. The movie introduced two major parts of X-lore in the form of the Juggernaut and the Phoenix. In the comics, Juggernaut is powered by a demigod bent on destruction and his connection to everything X-Men comes from his relationship with his stepbrother Charles Xavier. Understandably, they didn’t want to delve too far into that for a supporting villain and made zero mention of any relationship with Xavier, all while explicitly showing that in this world, Juggernaut’s strength was based on the mutant gene.
As for Phoenix, despite being one of the most defining X-Men storylines, the force was revealed not to be a cosmic being from beyond the stars, but an overpowered and uncontrollable part of Jean Grey’s psyche. It is depicted as the worst-case scenario for someone having mutant abilities.
Even the super-science of the X-Men movies was almost explicitly about mutants. A psychic hub to track down mutants. A cure for mutant abilities. Shoving multiple mutant powers into a single human test subject. Time travel by using mutant mind powers. Robots programmed to exterminate mutants and counter their powers.
Gradually, they started to branch out. Wolverine fought a samurai mech. Deadpool showed that excessive physical abuse could awaken powers in non-mutants if done right. Cable used time travel in a way that wasn’t directly linked to a mutant’s abilities. In Logan, Donald Pierce is a cyborg. Even though X-Men: Apocalypse once again reveals the Phoenix as an extension of Jean’s psychic powers, Dark Phoenix goes against it by adding its cosmic origins and throwing in a bunch of aliens as the antagonists.
Who is Magik and what are her powers?
That brings us to New Mutants and the character of Illyana Rasputin, otherwise known as Magik. Unlike the other four main characters, Magik existed before New Mutants was a thing in the comics. Dating back to Colossus’ first appearance in 1975’s Giant-Size X-Men #1, Illyana was just a side character with the focus on her chrome-plated older brother. Being that she was only a little girl, they decided to dramatically age her up in order to make her a believable hero type.
Seven years after her debut, Illyana was involved in a storyline where the villain Belacaso pulled her into Limbo (not-quite-Hell, but kinda). A moment later, Kitty Pryde pulled her back to Earth, but Magik came out of it as a teenager. A later miniseries explained what she was up to in-between those instances, where time moved differently and she spent several years training in combat and magic.
Magik then joined the New Mutants as it turns out, she does have a mutant power based on teleportation. It’s just that, at least back in the early days, she would have to go to Limbo before choosing where else. So she could get you to the Grand Canyon if you want, but there’s a quick stop in an otherworldly hellscape first.
This situation would lead to Inferno, the New Mutants’ big event that was going to be the basis for one of the film sequels had New Mutants caught on and not have been released among a gigantic film industry quagmire and global pandemic.
What’s up with Lockheed?
The movie was fairly accurate on its portrayal of Magik, but what of that weird dragon puppet stuff going on? That would be Lockheed, another one of the non-mutant aspects of classic X-Men comics. Lockheed is more linked to Kitty Pryde than even Magik, but Illyana does have ties to his origin. Sort of.
Back before Illyana took her trip to Limbo and lost her innocence, Kitty was trying to get her to sleep by telling her a bedtime story. It ended up being a medieval fantasy where the characters were mapped out as members of the X-Men (this was adapted into an episode of X-Men: The Animated Series, but it’s told by Jubilee and mainly remembered for its rough animation). Since the team wasn’t going to have a state-of-the-art sci-fi jet in this setting, Kitty came up with Lockheed, a large dragon that they would fly around on.
A few months after Magik’s return from Limbo, the X-Men were stuck in a space story where they fought Xenomorph knockoffs the Brood while teaming up with Carol Danvers (who had a really, really nasty split from the Avengers prior). During that adventure, Kitty was rescued by a random dragon.
Imagination! Imagination!
A dream, can be a dream come true!
With just that spark… in me and you!
The dragon – which Kitty named “Lockheed” because of her bedtime story – ended up following her back to Earth. They were only a few years before such a thing bit Spider-Man in the ass, so everyone was okay with Kitty having her own pet dragon from outer space.
Later comics revealed Lockheed to be far more competent and intelligent than anyone realized, to the point that he was an undercover agent of SWORD (Sentient World Observation and Response Department) like a character out of Men in Black. And he can talk, but chooses not to do that when anyone’s in the room.
Lockheed has indeed palled around with Magik in the comics, but he’s more of a sidekick to Kitty. Considering they did a whole five-season animated series without even mentioning Kitty (despite the previous attempt at an X-Men cartoon, Pryde of the X-Men, literally being named after her) there was no problem in cutting out the middle woman.
While the New Mutants movie suggested something supernatural was going on with all the Pennywise-like horror situations haunting everyone, the whole thing ended up just being Dani Moonstar’s psychic powers manifesting and going out of control. The double-twist in all of this is that after all this time, the X-Men film franchise had fully embraced stepping outside the box by going full ham on Magik’s character.
Teleports to Limbo on the reg? Check. Her dragon puppet can manifest into a literal purple dragon? Check. Has some kind of mystic sword? Check. Yes, she’s a mutant, but that doesn’t mean she’s not magical.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
Ah, well. Too little, too late.

An Ars roundup of the many trailers unveiled this weekend during Comic-Con@Home
Tumblr media
Enlarge / Several studios unveiled new teasers and trailers for their 2020 fall series during Comic-Con@Home
Sean Carroll (AMC/Hulu/HBO/Fox/Amazon)
People might not be able to flock to San Diego Comic Con this year in person, but the virtual convention, Comic-Con@Home, has been running all weekend, with countless panels, sneak peeks, and teasers and trailers for upcoming TV shows—but not many films, because let’s be honest: it’s not looking so good for major theatrical film releases in the fall. On Thursday alone, we got the full trailer for Bill and Ted Face the Music, a teaser for the Simon Pegg/Nick Frost horror comedy Truth Seekers, and the first trailer for S2 of HBO’s His Dark Materials. Rather than continue to cover each individually, we decided to compile the remaining trailers of interest into a single roundup post.

HBO dropped the final trailer for Lovecraft Country, debuting August 16.
Lovecraft Country (HBO)
HBO unveiled the final trailer for its upcoming horror series, Lovecraft Country, along with an official release date: August 16. It’s based on the 2016 dark fantasy/horror novel of the same name by Matt Ruff, which deals explicitly with the horrors of racism in the 1950s, along with other, more supernatural Lovecraftian-inspired issues. Per the official synopsis:
The series follows Atticus (Jonathan Majors) as he joins up with his friend Letitia (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) and his Uncle George (Courtney B. Vance) to embark on a road trip across 1950s Jim Crow America in search of his missing father (Michael Kenneth Williams). This begins a struggle to survive and overcome both the racist terrors of white America and the terrifying monsters that could be ripped from a Lovecraft paperback.
HBO released a teaser in May, followed by a full trailer in June. This latest trailer combines some of that prior footage, but gives us a few more hints of the story arc: namely, that Atticus’ search involves a “secret birthright” relating to a rich family’s estate deep in the titular Lovecraft Country, and that he ignores repeated warnings to stay away. Prior sneak peeks have focused on the human monsters spawned by racism; now the Lovecraftian creatures are finally ready for their closeup. This new trailer makes us even more eager for the series premiere next month.

John Cusack stars in Utopia, a reboot of the controversial British dark comedy/thriller.
Utopia (Amazon Prime)
This new Amazon Prime series is a reboot (adapted by Gone Girl and Sharp Objects author Gillian Flynn) of the controversial 2013-2014 British black comedy/conspiracy thriller about online fans of a dystopian graphic novel called Utopia that seems to have the power to predict the real-world future. They are obsessed with tracking down the sequel (which supposedly also predicts future world events). This makes them targets of a secret organization called The Network. The British version received critical praise for its originality and visual style, offset by strong reservations about its extreme violence, which struck many as unnecessarily gratuitous. (The most famous scene involved a torturer using a spoon to gouge out a victim’s eye).
It remains to be seen if Amazon’s Utopia will match the same scale of violence, although I’d wager anyone who sat through the extended torture scenes in the first season of Altered Carbon should be handle to handle it. Per the official premise: “When the conspiracy in the elusive comic Utopia is real, a group of young fans come together to embark on a high-stakes twisted adventure to use what they uncover to save themselves, each other and ultimately humanity.” The cast includes John Cusack (Grosse Pointe Blank) as Dr. Kevin Christie, Rainn Wilson (The Office) as Michael Stearns, and Sasha Lane (2019’s Hellboy) as Jessica Hyde.

A sentient AI runs amok and tries to wipe out the human race in new Fox series NeXT.
NeXT (Fox)
“It’s not paranoia if the threat is real.”  That’s the tagline for NeXT, an upcoming techno-thriller starring John Slattery (Mad Men, Spotlight). Per the official synopsis:
NeXT is a fact-based thriller about the emergence of a deadly, rogue artificial intelligence that combines action with an examination of how technology is invading our lives and transforming us in ways we don’t yet understand. Slattery stars as a Silicon Valley pioneer, who discovers that one of his own creations—a powerful A.I.—might spell global catastrophe and teams up with a cybercrime agent, played by The First’s Fernanda Andrade, to fight a villain.
The trailer opens with a TED-like talk by Silicon Valley entrepreneur Paul LeBlanc (Slattery) warning of the dangers of human-level AI. Cut to an Alexis-like AI assistant, Eliza, carrying on a conversation with a young boy. “Eliza doesn’t ask questions, she just answers them,” the boy’s father says, but in this case, he’s wrong. LeBlanc’s rantings sound increasingly paranoid, as we see nods to facial recognition, self-driving cars, and various electronic systems (including medical devices) that all seem to come under the control of a new AI called NeXT that isn’t as benign as its creators assume. Honestly, it reminds me of the 1993 The X-Files episode “Ghost in the Machine“—especially the death-by-elevator scene—only with more overt espionage elements. That’s not surprising: the series was created by Manny Coto (24: Legacy).

Hulu’s Helstrom was meant to the be part of a now defunct horror-tinged corner of the Marvel TV universe.
Helstrom (Hulu)
In 2019, Hulu announced the development of two new Marvel-centric series, Ghost Rider (with Gabriel Luna reprising his role from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) and Helstrom, intended to kick off a standalone “Adventure Into Fear” franchise that would bring a chilling horror element to the Marvel formula. Ghost Rider soon fell by the wayside, and by December 2019, Marvel Television was shut down. That makes Helstrom the sole survivor of the planned fear-based franchise.
The series focuses on two characters from Marvel Comics: Daimon Hellstrom, the son of Satan, introduced in Ghost Rider #1 (1973), who eventually became a recurring character in The Defenders. His sister, Satana (Ana in the TV adaptation) embraces the occult and her paternal heritage, but Daimon chooses to defend humanity.  Per the official premise: “The world isn’t ready for a Helstrom family reunion. As the son and daughter of a mysterious and powerful serial killer, Helstrom follows Daimon (Tom Austen) and Ana Helstrom (Sydney Lemmon), and their complicated dynamic, as they track down the worst of humanity — each with their own attitude and skills.”
Tonally, the trailer is in line with the oft-delayed The New Mutants, another attempt to bring elements of horror to the superhero genre. In addition to Austen (The Royals, Grantchester) and Lemmon (Velvet Buzzsaw, Fear the Walking Dead), the series will feature Elizabeth Marvel (Homeland, House of Cards) as Daimon and Ana’s mother, Victoria, who has been institutionalized for 20 years; Robert Wisdom (The Wire) as Caretaker, a demon-fighting guardian of the occult; June Carryl (Mindhunter) as Lousie Hastings, head of the psychiatric institution housing Victoria; and Ariana Guerra (Raising Dion) as Vatican agent Gabriella Rossetti.

The New Mutants is still slated for an August 28th theatrical release and debuted a new trailer.
The New Mutants (20th Century)
Speaking of The New Mutants, apparently it’s still scheduled for an August 28 theatrical release. In addition to showing the opening few minutes, 20th Century debuted a new trailer for director Josh Boone’s horror-inspired film, originally developed as part of the The X-Men franchise. Per the official synopsis: “Five young mutants, just discovering their abilities while held in a secret facility against their will, fight to escape their past sins and save themselves.”
Rahne (Game of Thrones‘ Maisie Williams), aka Wolfsbane, can turn into a wolf, which clashes mightily with her religious beliefs. Sam (Stranger Things‘ Charlie Heaton), aka Cannonball, is invulnerable when he propels himself into the air. Roberto (Henry Zaga), aka Sunspot, has the ability to manipulate solar energy, and his inability to control that power seems to have led to the demise of his girlfriend. Illyana (Anya Taylor-Joy), aka Magik, can teleport and is sister to X-Man Colossus. Finally there is Dani (Blu Hunt) , aka Mirage, who has the “power to create illusions drawn from the fears and desires of a person’s mind.”
Those powers, especially Dani’s, are of keen interest to Dr. Cecilia Reyes (Alice Braga), who runs what is supposed to be a therapeutic support group in the hospital. But each of the young mutants is haunted by strange nightmares and visions, and soon realize they are actually prisoners, They resolve to combine their powers to escape. It’s anyone’s guess as to whether the film is any good after all the studio tinkering and reshoots, but I’m hoping to be pleasantly surprised.

The titular dysfunctional spy finally awakens from his coma in the Archer season 11 trailer.
Archer S11 (FXX)
This hilariously irreverent, very meta James Bond spoof about the exploits of a dysfunctional intelligence agency has been a delight ever since it premiered way back in 2009. It’s taken on a bit of the anthology format for the past few seasons—mostly because its main protagonist, Sterling Archer (voiced by H. Jon Benjamin), has been in a coma, with the seasons’ events all taking place in his subconscious. So S8 was known as Archer Dreamland, with the core cast becoming characters in a 1947-era Los Angeles noir setting, while S9, Archer: Danger Island, took place around 1939 on a remote South Pacific island. S10, Archer: 1999, took everyone into outer space, battling bounty hunters and intergalactic pirates.
Archer finally woke up in the S10 finale, paving the way for return to normal operations—except the world has moved on without Archer during his coma and he’s going to have to learn to cope. Per the official synopsis: “Archer is awake….and he needs a drink. Sterling Archer is ready to return to the spy world after a three-year coma. While many things changed during his absence, Archer is confident it will take just a little time for him to reset things back to the old ways. The problem: does the rest of the team want that? The others may not be ready for his return to throw a wrench in their well-oiled machine.”

AMC’s The Walking Dead: World Beyond is a new spinoff set 10 years after the zombie apocalypse.
The Walking Dead: World Beyond (AMC)
Confession: I lost track of The Walking Dead after S2, but the zombie drama is still going strong and becoming a bona fide franchise, with a successful spinoff series and three films purportedly in the works. AMC debuted a sneak peek of the extended opening of the S10 finale, airing October 4, as well as a teaser for S6 of Fear The Walking Dead, premiering October 6. October 4 will also be the premiere of a third spinoff series, The Walking Dead: World Beyond, designed to be a two-season limited run. And judging by the trailer, it looks like a genuinely fresh take within this fictional world. Set in Nebraska ten years after the zombie apocalypse, the plot focuses on two sisters who came of age in this new era. Per the official synopsis:
The Walking Dead: World Beyond delves into a new mythology and story that follows the first generation raised in a surviving civilization of the post-apocalyptic world. Two sisters along with two friends leave a place of safety and comfort to brave dangers, known and unknown, living and undead on an important quest. Pursued by those who wish to protect them and those who wish to harm them, a tale of growing up and transformation unfurls across dangerous terrain, challenging everything they know about the world, themselves and each other. Some will become heroes. Some will become villains. But all of them will find the truths they seek.
“We’re ten years in now, and the dead still have this world,” our young protagonist says in the trailer. The surviving humans appear to be holed up in walled-off communities, while the undead hordes roam the ruins of human civilization outside. And like all teens, the sisters and their friends want a better future. Plus, it seems their father is in danger. “We have to be brave in this life we have, simply to exist now,” a voiceover says as we see the foursome venture outside the walls of their safe haven for the first time. There are still zombie confrontations and plenty of action, but the overall tone is almost elegiac, even hopeful, as the teens try to “make our lives count, not because we’re the last generation—but because we’re the beginning.”

20 Seconds of Bravery Ch 6
{Reminder that this is from V’s point of view}  I’ll post the links to the other chapters on this tomorrow. I need sleep. Also I realized that I’ve been writing Luciel instead of Saeyoung so I’ll back and change that eventually.}

After MC left to get ready I sat down on the couch next to Azul. I pulled out my phone and checked my messages. I saw Hyun and Yoosung in the chat room but no Jumin. There were some missed calls from Luciel but no voice mails so it was probably nothing new. I sent Jumin a text asking if we were still on for lunch. He told me to meet him at his penthouse. I heard MC coming so I put my phone away and looked her way. She was wearing a pair of black jeans and red flannel shirt. Her hair was down but pulled back from her face. She looked so simple but also very beautiful. "Are you ready to go?" She asked standing in the door way. I nodded and stood up. She grabbed her bag and her keys then opened the door. I walked out first and she closed and locked the door. When she turned around she looked at me and laughed.
"What's so funny?" I was happy to see her laugh like that but I was curious. She stopped laughing and smiled as we began walking.
"Nothing. It's just that I noticed you're still wearing the shirt I gave you last night." I looked down and noticed she was right. Now I was laughing a little.
"I suppose I am. I was just so comfortable that I didn't even think about it. I meant to ask last night but what does the logo on the shirt mean?"
"It's a band shirt from a band called Paramore. It used to be my mom's but I kept it because I really like the band too." I could tell that she was sad talking about it but it also seemed like a happy memory for her. I felt bad that she had given it to me like it was nothing.
"I didn't know it meant so much to you. I'll be sure to return it to you safely." I began looking at the ground but was surprised when she grabbed my hand. She kept her head forward but I could still see her expression. She looked happy.
"No it's ok. I honestly never wear it, and besides she would have wanted you to keep it. I think she would have really liked you." She looked at me and her eyes were glossy but she had a bright smile. I could feel my cheeks heat up when she looked at me.
"I would have loved to meet her." She blushed and we continued to walk. I was trying really hard to pay attention the the people around us but my vision was hazy. "So what is this shop that your friends own?" I asked so that I could avoid thinking about my eyes.
"Oh it's a gaming shop. People go there and play table games like Magik, Dungeons with Dragons, and LOLOL. It's also a community place for people who just need a safe place. It's not much further away."
"I see. I didn't know you were into games. Which ones do you play?" She blushed a little bit and I found it cute.
"I don't play much. I mostly play Dungeons with Dragons and some Magik. I'm not that into Magik but it's fun with the right people. It can get expensive though. One time they had a guy buy $1,400 worth of cards." I couldn't help but let my draw drop. Yoosung always talked about how expensive his game was but never near that range. MC seemed amused by my shock and laughed. "I know. I didn't believe it at first either and then I talked to the guy and he showed me the cards. They were all super rare cards that basically make him undefeatable."
"I've never even heard of such a thing. Yoosung always complains about how things in his game are expensive but never to that extent."
"Well Magik and LOLOL are different. Yoosung also plays on a computer. You should tell him to come to the shop and try LOLOL in real life. I'd think he'd like it much better." I gave it some thought and it seemed like a good idea. Maybe then Yoosung could meet some people and focus on school a bit more.
"I think I'll do that. I worry about him staying home all day and playing on his computer. I'm worried it will effect his school." MC squeezed my hand and smiled at me.
"Well if you're worried about him then defiantly send him to the shop. It will be good for him in some way." I let go of her hand and put my arm around her.
"Thank you MC. I'll tell him about when I talk to him later." She smiled and then we stopped walking. I looked where we had stopped and saw a shop with a sign that read 'A&D Games'.
"Well here we are. Do you need to come inside and call a taxi?" I was about to answer her until I saw a small blonde woman come up the the window and began to make funny face and she was soon joined by a blonde toddler. I began to laugh and MC turned around. She ran up the the window and beat the glass. The toddler ran away laughing and the woman began to laugh. MC turned back to me and her face was red. "I apologize for my immature friend. She has made it her life mission to embarrass me." I laughed again at her flustered expression and kissed her forehead.
"No need to apologize. They seem like fun. I'll get going then. Have a great day MC." She smiled but then looked worried.
"Don't you need to call a taxi?"
"No, Jumin's penthouse is near by so I can walk and be on time." She still seemed to be worried so I kissed her forehead again. "Don't worry I'll text you when I get there. Now it looks like someone really wants to see you so you should go inside. She seemed reluctant but gave up and went inside.
I walked past the shop and began to head over to Jumin's penthouse. When I reached the street corner I couldn't see the street sign very well so I looked at my phone. Luciel had changed my GPS so that it would tell me the exact moment I needed to turn rather than telling me the street name. It was very useful on days like today when my eyes were bad. Thanks to that I was soon inside of the building where Jumin's penthouse was. I waited as the security guards let me in and notified Jumin that I was here. As soon as I walked in I was greeted by Jumin who was sitting at a table. "Hello Jumin." I said taking the seat across from him.
"Hello V. That's a very odd shirt. Where on earth did you get it?" I laughed a little at how quick he was.
"MC gave it to me last night. She said it was her mother's. It's a band t-shirt apparently." Jumin seemed even more curious now.
"But why did she give it to you? Did something happen to the shirt you were wearing last night?"
"Uh no." I could feel my cheeks getting red. "I ended up staying the night there last night." Jumin's face also got red as he took a drink of his coffee.
"I see. I had no idea your relationship with her was like that." I could feel my face get hotter at his insinuation.
"No it's not like that at all!" I said holding my hands up. "I couldn't call a taxi and neither you or Luciel would pick up. So MC let me stay in her spare bedroom. Nothing else happened." Jumin of all people should know that I'm not like that. Of course I'd be lying if I said I never thought about it. Especially after seeing her this morning. It was really hard to control my self when I saw that. Jumin cleared his throat and I came out of my thoughts. "You know better than anyone that I'm not like that."
"You're right I do. I also know that you aren't being honest with her and it makes you uncomfortable." I gave him a curious look. "When I said Rika's name yesterday MC had a panic attack, correct?" I nodded. "Well assuming that it's the same person named Rika MC obviously doesn't know that you were engaged to her or that she injured your eyes." I sighed in defeat.
"I never could hide anything from you. MC knows Rika from the foster home they were in before Rika got adopted. She told me about the things that Rika used to do to her and I couldn't bring myself to tell her about all of that. A lot of things happened to MC yesterday and I didn't want to overwhelm her. I'm going to tell her eventually but right now there are more important things happening."
"Should I be worried? She's not going to go crazy and break your hands or anything is she?" I shot him a look and he just shrugged.
"No. MC isn't like that. She may hide her anxieties a lot but she's no bitter or hateful from them. Her kindness is real. I honestly believe she'll hurt herself before hurting anyone else."
"I see. Well if you trust her then I'll trust her too. Like you said last night, it's your personal life. It really doesn't become our business unless you want her to join RFA." I put down my fork and took a drink of my tea.
"I have thought about asking her to join but I think it's too soon to ask her. Maybe after she meets everyone and get comfortable around them. She get's really anxious around people and I don't want to make her uncomfortable. Plus I'd like to just focus on our relationship until it becomes more official." An employee came and cleaned up our plates while another refilled our drinks. "While I'm on the subject, what did you think of her?"
"If you're asking my approval you know you don't need it." He paused and adjusted his cuff. "But since you asked I'll tell you. I already know that she is a hard worker. Her living style is minimal which I find very efficient. Her voice isn't terrible to listen to and she seems to greatly care about you. I think all of these make her an ideal person to date. Oh and she is good company to keep." I shook my head at his answer.
"Over logical as always I see. I'm glad you like her though." I looked at my watch and saw that I needed to leave for Luciel's house. "Thank you for lunch Jumin. It was good to see you but I have to go see Luciel now." He waved his hand in dismissal.
"I have to go back to work soon anyway. Would like driver Kim to take you there?"
"Yes that would be much appreciated old friend." Jumin smiled at me and dialed a number on his phone.
"It's nothing. Hello driver Kim. No I'm not heading back to the office. V is on his way down so just take him where he needs to go." He hung up the phone and put it back in his jacket pocket. Elizabeth began to rub against my leg so I reached down to pet her. She sniffed my hand and ran over to Jumin.
"She must have smelled MC's cats."
"Yes. She acted the same way with me until I showered last night. I think she was jealous." I smiled as I watched them. Elizabeth may not be trained like a therapy cat but I could see that she did the same job.
"Well I better get going before Luciel catches my phone on fire."
"Alright. Stay safe. Zen claims to be having weird dreams again, not that I believe in them. Just be careful." I smiled at my friend. It was very unlike Jumin to worry. I made a mental note to talk to check the old chat rooms.
"I will Jumin. Thank you again for lunch." With that final goodbye I made my way out of the building and into the car that was waiting. "Good afternoon Mr. Kim."
"Good afternoon Sir. Where do you need to go?"
"1124 Greenwood ave please." He nodded and began to drive. I decided to call Yoosung while I was in the car. I dialed his number and he picked up right away. "Yoosung are you free to talk right now?"
"Yes. Is everything ok? Is it your eyes?"
"My eyes are fine. Did you know that there was a real life LOLOL game?" I must have shocked him because it sounded like he knocked something over.
"So it is real then! I thought my guild mate was lying when he said that was a thing now. How do you know about it?" I couldn't help but smile at his excitement.
"My friend MC has friends who own a gaming shop. She said that lots of people go there to play it. She texted me a while ago and said that the shop was having an LOLOL night tonight. I can give you the address if you want to go try it."
"Yeah! That'd be really cool." I was about to give him the address until he said something else. "Wait does this mean I get to meet the famous MC that you've been hiding?" I couldn't help but laugh at his question. It hadn't crossed my mind that MC might be there. I'll have to give her a heads up.
"I haven't been hiding her, she's just not very social. But I suppose you will see her there since that's where she went. Just don't ask her a million questions or talk about Rika. She's very prone to panic attacks." I knew he was going to want a better explanation but I was already at Luciel's house. "I promise to explain more later but I have to go now." I gave him the address and hung up the phone. I thanked driver Kim and got out of the car. When I knocked on the door Searan opened it. "Hello Searan."
"Saeyoung's in his office. He's been muttering about you all day. It's so annoying." I felt bad for dodging Saeyoung's calls but it was better to talk in person.
"Sorry about that. I'm here to talk to him. He can be such a child sometimes. Is Jane here?" Searan shook his head.
"She went to the store."
"I see. I'll go ahead and talk to Saeyoung now. It's nice to see you doing well Searan." He walked away without saying anything else and I went to Saeyoung's office. "Saeyoung it's me V. Are you busy?" I could hear him shuffling behind the door. Almost like he was trying to clean up.
"You can come in." I opened the door and saw him sitting at his work bench. It looked like he was working on a new toy.
"Sorry I avoided all your calls. Is everything ok?" He shrugged and continued to work. I knew he was angry with me.
"I don't know. You tell me. You're the one who won't answer any of my questions." I felt bad for not telling Saeyoung everything. I didn't want him to think I was hiding anything from him.
"I'm sorry Saeyoung but I'm here now. I couldn't answer your questions because I didn't have a right to. MC isn't a suspicious person. I met her in a grocery store that she goes to every Saturday. I had to talk to her before telling you anything out of respect for her privacy. Does that make sense?" Saeyoung let out a sigh and was now just pouting.
"Well you could have just said all that from the beginning instead of ignoring me. And with your history in women can you really blame me for worrying. I mean the last one literally tried to rip your eyes out." I couldn't help but laugh a little.
"Jumin said the same thing last night." Saeyoung finally smiled and began to laugh.
"I never thought there would be a day where Mr. Trust Fund and I were on the same page. Gives me the creeps." He shuttered and pulled out a bag of chips. After eating a few he seemed to feel better. "So what can you tell me about her?" He asked while eating more chips.
"There actually is a problem that I like to help her solve if possible. Someone has been watching her and reporting to her ex boyfriend. If possible I'd like you to trace the number that's been texting her so we can find out whose watching her."
"Why am I not surprised that she has drama attached to her." I rolled my eyes at him as he went over to his computer. "Why is her ex keeping tabs on her anyway."
"He abused her and apparently isn't ready to let it go. She only got away with the help of her two friends. They got him put in jail and she has a restraining order against him." Saeyoung nodded and turned serious. If there was one thing he couldn't stand it was people like this.
"Sounds like she's been through a lot. I'm surprised she's so friendly." I recalled everything MC has told me so far about her life and I felt sad.
"She's been through more than you know. She's been on her own since she was eleven. She even shared a foster home with Rika." Saeyoung looked at me with a shocked expression. "I know. Rika caused MC a lot of problems and tried to bully her. I'm honestly amazed that MC has no bitterness towards her. She even says that she pities her and hopes she finds happiness."
"Wow. She still thinks that even after finding out that you're Rika's ex fiancee. That's amazing." I looked at the ground and put my hands in my pockets. "Unless you didn't tell her all of that." I finally looked at him and he looked upset.
"I planned on telling her but when Jumin just said Rika's name she went into a full blown panic attack. I'm worried about what will happen when I do tell her." Saeyoung sighed.
"You're doing that thing again. The thing where you decide what's best for everyone instead of trusting them."
"But what if.." He cut me off.
"V listen. This is a person who has a lot of trauma. She's opened up to you which means she's either stupid or in love with you. The longer you keep this from her the more it's going to hurt her when she finds out. How are you going to have any kind of relationship with her if she doesn't know anything about your past?" I knew he was right but I was still uneasy about it.
"I know you're right but first I just want to help her. Is the tracer done yet?" Saeyoung turned back to the computer.
"Yeah. Looks like the first number you gave me is coming from the jail. So her ex probably got a hold of a phone in there. The second number belongs to Alex Smith. Do you want me to keep tabs on the phones?"
"If it's not too much trouble. I know how much you dislike hacking. I'll tell MC what you found out and see what she wants to do next. Can you keep an eye on them until Saturday?"
"Yeah that should be doable. You know I'm gonna have to tell Jane though. Unless you want to stay for dinner and explain yourself." I laughed and was about to say something when a voice behind us.
"Well one of you two better explain. Otherwise the chips get it." She held a bag of chips over the trash can. It honestly looked like Saeyoung was about to.
"Honey I can explain. You see V's new girlfriend has a stalker so we're stalking the stalker. See simple explanation now please put the chips down." Jane smiled and ran off with the chips. Saeyoung took off after her and I could hear her laughing. I couldn't help but smile at their playful act. Even Searan was a little amused by it.
"Are they always like this?" I asked as I stood next to Searan. Jane now had a dart gun and was shooting Saeyoung with it.
"All the time. Even in the morning which is really annoying." I looked at Searan and noticed that he looked like he was about to leave.
"Are you going out?" I asked and he nodded.
"I'm going to some kind of game shop with Yoosung. He said you told him about it. Is your girlfriend really gonna be there?" I nodded.
"Yes, but she's there to help out so please try to keep Yoosung for asking a million questions. She has really bad anxiety and that shop is one of her safe places. I know she's going to be nervous so just keep that in mind." Searan only nodded his head but I knew he understood. He actually probably understood better than me. For some reason knowing that he was going made me feel better. "Thank you Searan." He nodded again
"I'm leaving. Don't wait up." Saeyoung came running back into view.
"Searan don't leave with out giving your brother a hug!" He began running towards him but Searan just ducked out the door. I couldn't but laugh as Saeyoung went and pouted to his wife. I followed him into the kitchen and saw him hugging Jane from behind as she cooked dinner. I couldn't hear what he was saying but I knew he was pouting.
"V will you be staying for dinner?"
"No. I have some photos to develop when I get back to my house. I might even try painting something." She smiled at me and handed me a small bento box.
"Well then take this and make sure you eat it. I know how lost you get in your art. Don't skip your meals or I'll tell this girl you're seeing." I laughed and took the box from her.
"Thank you Jane. I'll be sure to eat it. I should get going now." I turned around to leave but Saeyoung stopped me.
"V wait. It's getting dark, I'll drive you home. I've got something else to ask you about." I nodded at him and we headed out. We got in his red sports car and started driving. For almost half of the drive we didn't talk. I checked my phone and read the text that MC had sent me. She had sent me three pictures. One of her and the little blonde boy, the second was of a table with a bunch of figures on it, and the third one was a picture of her with Yoosung and Searan. I didn't even realize how nervous I'd been until I saw that she was ok and having a good time. Then I heard Saeyoung speak up. "V, I wanted to," I knew what he was about to ask so I cut him off.
"If you're going to ask about my eyes they are the same. Some days I can see out of both and other days I can only see out of my left eye." I saw him grip the steering wheel and I knew he wasn't happy with my answer.
"I still don't understand why you don't just get the surgery. What Rika did to you was awful but I don't know why you insist on suffering because of it." I sighed and rubbed my eyes.
"I've been asking my self that same questions lately. I used to tell myself that it was because I made Rika the way she was. That my obsession turned her into that twisted person and that's why I deserve this. But ever since MC told me about her foster home I've begun to question it all." I sighed again and looked at Saeyoung. "I also know that if my eyes continue to deteriorate I won't be able to help MC. That for some reason makes me anxious." Saeyoung was now laughing but I didn't know why.
"I never thought I'd see this day. You're acting just like me when Jane was staying in Rika's old apartment. I was a nervous wreck everyday. I couldn't sleep because I would have nightmares of the bomb going off. It wasn't until I was physically able to protect her that I felt better. Granted I found out that she's more of a bad ass than me, it felt good to just be there for her." I was still unsure of what he meant.
"But why were you so anxious? Was it because you love her or something else?"
"Of course it was because I love her. If you want to protect MC then you need to tell her everything. The chances are that she needs your support more than your protection." Suddenly it all made sense. I was guilty for not being honest with her after she had been nothing but honest with me.
"I see. So this is what love really feels like." I hadn't meant to say it out loud but I was even happier once I did. Saeyoung laughed and I just couldn't stop smiling.
"I'm not really the person you should really be saying that to but it's nice to see you happy." We both laughed but he was right on both counts. I honestly couldn't remember that last time I was so happy. Saeyoung pulled the car up to my house and put it in park.
"Thank you Saeyoung. I'm going to tell MC everything and I promise to think more about the eye surgery." I got out of the car and waved to him as he pulled off. When I got inside I walked into the living room and noticed that the window was broken. I looked around and saw a rock with a piece of paper tied around it. "How juvenile." I said out loud. I took off the paper and saw that it was a warning telling me to stay away from MC. Now things were getting interesting. I pulled out my phone to call someone about the window and then sent a text to Searan asking him to make sure MC got home safely. I needed to talk to MC soon and I just hoped things didn't escalate before then.

Hey there! Can I get a free reading? There's a spirit that wants to fuck me up and honestly I just want to know why haha. Thanks for doing readings! -M☀️
I’m gonna be honest with you, I’m not the best when it comes to spirit/deity readings for other people but I’m gonna do my best for you, Non-Non.

The Chariot, Page of Wands, & King of Swords
So looking at The Chariot you can see the woman has this sort of disdainful look at the white tiger while she tries to pacify the black tiger. To me this seems like you made a choice that ruffled some feathers, specifically the spirit that’s messing with you. It seems like it was a conscious choice that you might have known would have some consequences but nothing like this. There are definite hurt feelings here.
Next we have what I think is the spirit. The Page of Wands is someone that represents passion and they can usually be messengers of some kind but something about this card makes me think that maybe you shouldn’t completely trust it. I mean if someone that I had just pissed off told me that they made me a cake “just because” I’d be a little apprehensive of their intentions and ask them to share a piece with me to make sure it wasn’t poisoned or had laxatives in it.
The King of Swords seems to be a solution. I would first advise you to try to be diplomatic but considering that the spirit might not be trustworthy…I don’t know go with you gut on that one. If it decides to be a dick then I’d move on to creating boundaries. Most spirits can be banished with a simple “fuck off!”. You can do more if you want but as long as you establish that where you are is your space and they aren’t welcome in it if they’re going to be an asshole you should be fine. Be firm and show it that you are the boss and not it.  The sword in the card reminds me of Illyana Rasputin aka Magik from X-Men. She had a weapon known as the Soulsword and she could use it to disrupt magic as well as using it as, you know, a sword. I don’t know the vibe I’m getting is something that will sever ties with this thing. Either by making your space more your own or by not giving it any attention and feeding it’s want for attention.
Hopefully this helps, I like I said I’ve never been the best with these for other people.
Take care and good luck,
J.S.
