75 years of political independence, I think it's worth celebrating ^^

I say political independence, because socially and economically, India has a long way to go...

Not until we get rid of our judgemental nature, all the stupid stereotypes, the ethnic and religious discrimination, not until all Indians sleep with a filled stomach and a peaceful mind, without fear of being rebuked for the language they speak, the colour of their skin, their gender and sexuality, the clothes they wear, their occupation or political beliefs, can we call this nation free.

Until then, we are still slaves to destiny. A destiny determined by our past.

We are not free until we write our fate based on the present.

But let's keep faith, we can do it if we're together in this! Jai Hind!

I'm writing this post in English, though it won't be of interest to many people. Still, it's interesting to me, and I see no reason not to, so why not.

So, in Bengal, where I live, we refer to the national currency by a different name. Though the Indian Rupee (INR) is what we use, we call it Taka (টাকা), which is the currency of Bangladesh. West Bengal and Bangladesh share the same language and a lot of cultural practices that I won't get into here, but I never referred to money as Rupee unless I was speaking in Hindi or English.

When out shopping, in order to ask how much something costs, most people might simply ask, "How much?" We do the same thing, but we also include the currency sometimes. For example, "कितना रूपये?" or "কত টাকা?" respectively, though I've simply used "কত?" as well many times.

But that's not the only thing we use. Another word is well in use, and that is dam (দাম). Asking "দাম কত?" or "কত দাম?" is a fairly common practice. But what is a dam? Consulting the dictionary, this is what I and most people see:

Basically, a word meaning value. But I wasn't satisfied. Doesn't fit the pattern of asking how many rupees or taka something costs. And lo, this is what I found:

People don't remember it, but the language they speak keeps things alive regardless. Again, this stuff is only interesting to me and probably @bongboyblog and their friends.

I have no idea where I'm going with this post but I want to say that Sourav Dutta deserves more credit for his research on some of the less researched Bengali books and authors. He had multiple blogs which are all absolute GEMS and if you are into Bengali literature you should totally check them out.

He restored and compiled many illustrations that are unavailable now, which is like really cool. Like original illustrations and headpieces from the magazines where those stories and novels were first published, or illustrations from those tiny hardcover anthologies that were popular before samagras were a thing, all that.

There’s also a lot of information on those books in his blogs, on both canon info and publication history and it’s like. Really interesting. I recently found out he died and I just wish I could have talked to him. I did talk to him in the comments of one of his blogs when I first discovered them a couple of years back, but still. I think he would have been great to cultivate, tbh.

I'll link the blogs that I know of so everyone can pay a visit.

Blogus is a miscellaneous blog with pages on many books and series, including Ghanada, Tenida, Harshabardhan-Gobardhan, Kumar-Bimal, Mejokarta, several Bengali translations of Hound of the Baskervilles and many others, pages on authors, illustrations of books, comic adaptations including a comic of Charmurti that came out in Jugantor in the 1970s etc. There's even a page on the song Bhajahari Manna. It's super interesting.

Ghanada Gallery has illustrations and covers of the Ghanada stories, publication dates and information on the illustrators.

Tenida Treasury is the one I've frequented the most for obvious reasons, and it has a lot of good shit, but especially a chronological list of all the Tenida stories which I don't think exists anywhere else. And all the illustrations and trivia are very cool too.

Manoranjan Museuem is about Manoranjan Bhattacharya, the author of Hukakashi. There's not only illustrations but also ads and reviews of his books and a lot of general trivia.

For those studying Bengali, this blog provides daily word posts, breaks down grammatical concepts and gives examples on how to use a word or concept in Bengali. Considering Bangla doesn’t have a whole lot of reliable/easy-to-understand resources, this is a gold mine! This blog is also wonderful for people who want to learn about Bengali culture in general as well.

Note: the author is West Bengali, so students of Bangladeshi Bangla should still cross reference if they wish to speak colloquial Bangladeshi Bangla. West Bengal Bengalis do speak closer to “standard”, so this will still be very useful if you wish to better understand Bengali literature, songs and film!
