Hell-oh one and all to the Worst GMMTV Boy's Love Series Tournament*!

While it is always everyone's greatest wish to keep fandom a positive and wholesome experience, sometimes we just want to go ham and have a little toxicity in our lives… you know, as a treat! So that's where this Tournament comes in.

Starting next Monday, November 27th 2023, and over the course of the next ten weeks, we are going to have a series of polls to find out which is the most be-hated GMMTV Boy's Love Series. During the course of the tournament, it is allowed and even encouraged to get a little mean with it. Vote for the option you like the least, reblog the polls talking about how and why you hate the series you hate, leave asks to this blog to let me know, and feel free to engage in a little light-hearted ribbing - or even discourse! - in the replies to each round. Anything goes, the sky's the limit!

Unlike the original tournament, this is going to be a Double Elimination Tournament. That means that if a show you particularly hate has already been eliminated, fret not! because it will then be knocked down to the Losers' Bracket where it will keep competing with the other losers until it loses one last time or makes it all the way to the Ultimate Final for another chance to prove itself the worst in the business!

There are 24 shows in this tournament. The reason Water Boyy, My Gear and Your Gown, and My Tee ('Cause You're My Boy) were not included was that they're not liked enough and I didn't want to make it too easy. Also I haven't watched them so it wouldn't have been fun for me.

Now that we've gotten to know each other, stay posted for the beginning of the tournament and get ready to do your worst! I'll see you all very, very soon.

Giving "problematic" BL a chance - Love Stage!!

I've been watching (or rewatching) some BL anime that have been deemed problematic to see really how bad they are... or if there's anything good in them!

Warning for the unfortunately usual BL tropes! And some spoilers!

Synopsis

To those not familiar with the anime, Love Stage!! follows Izumi, a guy who was a stand-in for a female actress in a commercial while younger, and Ryouma, his counterpart in said commercial. The thing is, Ryouma believes Izumi is a girl and holds feelings for him for ten years after the shoot. And during a ten year anniversary for the commercial, Izumi and Ryouma are reunited... only for Ryouma to learn Izumi is a guy. Chaos ensues, and the problematic romance begins.

The Good

Overall, I actually enjoyed the series. It's very hard to take seriously and somewhat cringeworthy at times, but it's ridiculous enough to keep me coming back. I genuinely enjoyed watching Izumi and Ryouma bounce off each other in all their ridiculousness. While their romance didn't feel especially natural to me (especially due to some events I will mention later), they definitely had chemistry in other ways. I also found Izumi to be a likeable lead who had a story besides just the romance. He's an otaku and has a dream of being a mangaka, despite his parents wanting him to get into show business like them. He's also pretty clearly bisexual, which is always nice to see. There's also a real discussion about s*x that wasn't too weird or awkward, which was really nice to see in a genre this ridiculous. Also, they're adults? Low bar, I know, but this is BL from 2014.

The Bad

Like an unfortunate amount of BLs, there are multiple cases of SA and harassment. There's an earlier scene where Ryouma tries to force himself on Izumi, playing into the "I just can't help myself" trope. There's another scene in the latter half of the series that involves Izumi and a group of men. Both scenes are incredibly uncomfortable to watch, especially with how casually they're played off. To give credit where credit's due, Izumi is traumatized by both occurrences, but they fact that they're both played off as no big deal by everyone around him and he later gets into a relationship with his abuser is just not okay. On a far, far lesser note, it does play into the "tall masculine" and "meek feminine" tropes. And there are definitely some intimate scenes that do feel more like fanservice than natural relationship buildup.

Final Thoughts

Besides those seriously horrible aspects... I did have fun watching it. While the episodes with the assaults were very uncomfortable, most of the other episodes were just funny or enjoyable. I do really understand why people would avoid this. Also, side note, like a lot of BL, I really did not like the art style, but at least it's not a big offender of the Yaoi Chin™. And while I can't really comment on the overall f*tishy-ness of the whole thing, it just felt... really mild? I thought it would be a lot worse with the amount of hate it gets. Honestly, there's a lot of series that are worse offenders of these tropes that get a lot more love.

TLDR: Love Stage is problematic and has some really gross moments, but besides that is genuinely entertaining and quite funny. Overall, it's a lot more mild than it's often made out to be.

Do I recommend? Not really. Unless you really want some trashy shoujo to cringe and laugh at. Is it good representation? No, but it's no where near the worst I've seen.

HEAVEN OFFICIAL'S BLESSING talvez seja uma das melhores animações asiáticas nos últimos anos

Esse anime ou donghua (termo usado para classificar animações chinesas), para mim é algo novo e familiar ao mesmo tempo. Novo porque estou descobrindo todo um novo mundo, os donghuas, os famigerados animes chineses; eu confesso que em 2016, 2017, quando estava tendo a primeira onda disso, eu dei uma olhada em algumas como em HITORI NO SHITTA (2016-2021) e BLOODIVORES (2016), como era a primeira onda, a maioria ainda era dublado em japonês; eu lembro que achei interessante, mas nunca mais conferi outra, mas de uns anos pra cá vi a popularidade de algumas obras crescendo, e com a pandemia e o isolamento, as pessoas foram garimpando séries e filmes novos, e isso fez com que os donghuas fossem redescobertos, com obras como LINK CLICK (2021-2023) e MO DAO ZU SHI (2018-2022) ganhando cada vez mais fãs, mas eu estou embarcando nessa jornada agora, graças à três obras, LEGEND OF EXORCISM (2020-Atualmente), THE DAILY OF THE IMMORTAL KING (2020-Atualmente) e o próprio HEAVEN OFFICIAL'S BLESSING (2020), os três até o momento estão disponíveis na Netflix e Crunchyroll; e pretendo continuar com mais obras. E familiar porque apesar de eu só estar começando com os donghuas agora, eu sempre fui apaixonado pelo cinema chinês, principalmente por filmes de kung-fu, que foram uma das principais coisas que moldaram minha infância e adolescência, então esses animes me dão um certo aconchego por isso.

Agora falando do anime em si, eu realmente fiquei muito surpreso em como essa é uma obra gostosa de assistir, falando principalmente do tom e dos personagens. É um anime leve e agradável aos olhos, as cores são muito bonitas e o visual é impecável e a animação só melhora a cada episódio, sendo muito fluida e consistente, principalmente em cenas noturnas onde todas essas qualidades parecem só aumentar.

Os protagonistas são muito fofos e carismáticos; assim, esse é um anime Yaoi (romance entre garotos), e claramente os personagens se gostam, mas a China tem uma forte censura à materiais LGBT, embora homosexualidade não seja crime no país, o governo chinês não aprova muito esse tipo de material; mas acho que a censura só beneficiou a obra, os personagens dão flertadas discretas e isso me deu a impressão de que os sentimentos e a relação entre os dois fosse mais interessante de se acompanhar. Os dois são fofos e tem uma química saudável, e essas flertadas discretas também dão um bom alívio cômico.

O anime também é um Xianxia, que pra quem não sabe, é um gênero de fantasia influenciado pelo taoismo e budismo, muito popular na cultura pop, tendo vários livros, jogos, filmes e séries do gênero; devo dizer que o mundo criado, por mais que seja bem padrão de fantasia chinesa, é muito bem explorado através das lendas e histórias ao longo dessa temporada.

HEAVEN OFFICIAL'S BLESSING é uma obra linda e revigorante, e com certeza vale o seu tempo.

Want to See You

Episode 1 is a doozy and this is really gonna be a soap opera, isn't it? Starts with Thach (Ba Vinh!) being introduced to his new caregiver. He was in an accident that left him blind and now appears to just not care about anything. The people around him call him useless and see determined to take advantage of him. And he seems to be mostly just lost in despair. Also, Ba Vinh is obviously very comfortable with bathtub shots.

Basically? This is gonna be dramatic. But I can't wait! I do like that we start out in media res but also just as confused as the main character.

@absolutebl I don't know if this will be as good as Mr. Cinderella but it's definitely gonna be an adventure.
