Some Vital Scenes to Include in a Romantic Subplot, Pt. 2

Back at it again with part two of some scenes to consider adding for a romance subplot. Before we get into it, just a brief reminder that everyone’s story is different. Take that as you will. I find these helpful for planning and keeping a solid foundation for a compelling romance. There's probably a lot more I'm missing out. Some of these tips, I'm thinking, could even be helpful for writing a platonic friendship, in cases like making mistakes or helping each other through tough times.

If there's anything you would like add or share about this process or some of the things that have helped you, let me know! ~

- Moments of intimacy:

This is rather similar to our last point about flirting, but what I’m trying to get across here is the things that are not said. The unspoken. The unmentionables, if we wanna go there. But I’m getting ahead of myself… this is the kind of scene that can be built up gradually as the romance between your characters grows and deepens. Moments of intimacy in a romance subplot involve deeper and more meaningful interactions between the characters, showcasing their emotional closeness. They include physical closeness, such as hugs, touches, or moments of shared proximity.

It doesn’t have to be all touchy-feely, either. These scenes also might include gazing at the stars, a shared adventure, a sudden desire to reach out but chickening out at the last second, or a quiet moment of understanding during a tough situation. These gestures can convey a sense of comfort or safety. Intimate moments can also build anticipation and tension in the narrative, where readers may eagerly await these little, momentous moments as they read and become more invested in their relationship.

- Helping each other out:

Nothing get me more invested in a romance than those moments where the characters offer support, assistance, or guidance to each other, thus reinforcing their bond and showcasing the strength of their connection. Also, while helping each other, the characters can also encourage independence and growth in each other. They can encourage each other’s goals and aspirations, allowing each other to maintain their own unique identity within the relationship.

The characters could also perform acts of kindness, be it big or small — showing to the other character how much they care without explicitly stating it. There’s an element of vulnerability that can be explored here, in which the characters share experiences and insights good and bad — offering each other solace during hard times and joy during the best of times.

Some examples!

- Character A solving a problem in a way that only they would know or character B wouldn’t have thought of in the first place.

- Character B being understanding and listening without judgement to A’s opening up and venting.

- Character A offering support and clear-headed advice to B, who tends to get irrational. On the other hand, B standing up for A and protecting them from harm.

- Character B teaching a new, valuable skill to A, thus providing great opportunity for them to get closer and connect.

- Mistakes or misunderstandings:

Like many others, I’m not a big fan of miscommunication in romantic arcs … unless they’re resolved quickly (because they tend to be predictable, sometimes, or just frustrating when there's every opportunity for them to reconcile but they're ignoring it because drama).

Ahem. But, characters should be allowed to make mistakes and learn from them. It’s realistic, because who hasn’t made a mistake at least once in their life? Not every budding relationship is ever perfect. It’s rewarding to see characters learn from their errors and work towards a mutual understanding or reconciliation. This helps to show their emotional maturity and resilience, especially if its gradual or important for their character arc.

Narrative elements that introduce complications (often arising from bad impressions, flaws, insecurities, awkward moments, mistakes, or even just being at the wrong place at the wrong time) can add tension to the relationship while providing space for growth. When used right, this can add deeper strength to your characters’ bond as they eventually overcome the bumps along the road of romance. It’s always interesting to see how characters might react in certain situations, for better or for worse. This is also a great point as to force your characters to confront their true feelings and be able to recognize them or communicate them better.

- Declaration of feelings:

Finally! The moment we’ve all been waiting for! This is the special moment where one or both characters express their romantic feelings for each other, marking a significant turning point in the subplot that often dictates how the story would then play then on out. Think about how you want your “declaration” scene to play out and what emotions you want to invoke. Is it elation? Anguish? Confusion? Excitement? Sadness? I mean, not every declaration scene has to be perfect. It all depends on the story you’re wanting to tell, how focused you want your romantic subplot to be, and what your characters are like.

Also consider how your characters are feeling in that moment and what brought them there. Have your characters been waiting for this moment for a long time now? Is it risky? Easy for them to declare their feelings out loud? Could it also be just not the right moment, so hopefully later their love will be fully understood and reciprocated? Just some helpful things to consider.

can i add something to the sunny and phil thing? because im a philza main and i love tallulah, but i also love sunny!

so i’m going to start with no neg to anyone and i don’t really “side” with anyone either. i watch both povs (but phil more than tubbo) and i like all the characters! i also think it’s important to mention that most of the drama is v obviously caused by admins, so characters!

From Phil, he doesn’t dislike Sunny. this is something i’ve seen a lot of people saying that phil dislikes sunny and he doesn’t?? like from everything i’ve seen he does like them, she’s just not his egg. phil constantly is teasing the eggs, and when he originally introduced sunny literally all he did know of them was that she liked money and stealing. that was literally their only interaction at the time. but take for example yesterday, at the parkour, he took the time to wait for her, he left his own kids with tubbo to quickly teach them how to use the grapple, and complimented her new outfit.

I think the idea comes from him letting Tallulah not interact with Sunny. (which she is starting to change). to that i say, he’s a father first. obviously he’s going to put his child’s needs before anyone else’s. and even he has been hoping tallulah will warm up to sunny. saying yesterday when they were talking that he knew lullah just needed time. HE WAS LITERALLY HOPING THEYD GET ALONG.

Now I should make clear, Sunny is completely valid in feeling how she feels. i just think it’s important to mention that just cause that’s how they feel doesn’t mean she’s accurately seeing the situation. no, tallulah hasn’t liked her and is acting more hostile than she’s ever acted before. but with phil? that’s a misunderstanding. phil doesn’t dislike them and even if he did, it wouldn’t be her fault. From what i’m seeing the problem is tubbo.

he’s not communicating sunny’s needs to phil like phil told him about how tallulah was uncomfortable with the new eggs. (which i don’t see anyone mention?? phil told tubbo that lullah wasn’t comfy with the new eggs) he hasn’t even confronted phil on how he didn’t like what phil said while introducing her. which i can get he might not want to talk about lullah’s actions, but phil’s own feel like something he could confront. of course, i’m not blaming him, just saying that the main “problem” point is the lack of communication. sunny doesn’t want to confront the death family, phil doesn’t know there’s a reason to discuss! (which i can say from personal experience sucks to know you were hurting someone and they just chose to hold it against you but not tell you.) so tubbo, who at least knows how sunny feels and believes phil doesn’t mean for it to come off that way, should be the middleman.

TLDR: Sunny and Phil have the big miscommunication, Phil doesn’t dislike Sunny he just doesn’t really know her, and ideally, Tubbo should intervene.

i know i didn’t mention lullah really, but like personally fair that she doesn’t trust the new eggs. and really i haven’t seen anything so neg about her other than people just straight up hating her for not getting along with sunny. which is it’s own situation. but that has nothing to do with the characters so it’s not my point. as i prioritize talking about the characters over the meta.

today i woke up and saw tfblade post how he got banned three times and thought that was kinda crazy but funny.

but being one minute out of bed i skimmed it then saw a reply saying he needed to get off the net and that league is a childrens game.

this immediately provoked me because the thought of someone controlling someone else to be online and calling league a childrens game when i made a ton of money off it made me really angry.

so i replied with the "who the fuck do you think you are lmao" and was laughing on my way to the shower.

i played sf6 streamed played baulders with the boys, then checked back on it and saw a bunch of people saying i fell off, i wasnt human, one parasocial weirdo brought up my ex, and one guy being genuninely confused.

i felt anger and sadness for a good hour and then went back to reasess why this happened and realized the context was he didnt just fuck himself over but it was a korean bootcamp so a bunch of ppl that came over got banned not just him.

not to mention korea stans, vtubers fans, league fans all involved. so realizing that i stepped on a landmine i wasnt mad anymore and actually understood why the feedback was so awful and deleted some dumb shit i said and said sorry to the one guy who was confused on why i would ever say such a thing.

i was in a really bad mood at the end of my day but thanks to my friends who let me vent for a little i came to realize that i actually fucked up by not reading more. and even posting in drama filled with these kinds of fans. i'm impressed that anyone even liked my post because now i feel sick looking at the situation so i deleted it.

i still dont think it's right for others to tell people what to do and calling league a childrens game but i clearly missed the point and took a L today.

everything is good with me but i have no motivation to do anything besides play games and keep myself from being to unhealthy (i'm back at 230) but i plan on losing weight again before any event i go to (evo or twcon) next year and hopefully can post some very happy pictures once again like last year.

that was my day, i posted this because i feel like this is my safe space and i felt a little lonely for the first time in months.

i really dont think i would of done anything to much different in my life but so much pain is caused from misunderstandings and miscommunication and sometimes when i want attention and act like a fool once in awhile.

but i have a lot of gamer friends i enjoy playing games with so im good.

I think taikan yoho might actually be a perfect show. The show is very aware of its characters and the actors are ALSO very aware of their characters, the instrumentals tickle a rich sense of something i can't even describe but it makes me want to rewatch scenes just to experience it again. and the monologues, makes everything so clear, we know everything intimately like it's a part of us and it's very very oougghhhhh invoking. there's no unnecessary drama or additional setup for the plot to move forward The CHARACTERS move it forward. Like from the first ep we probably thought that the sunny day ban was the driving conflict but then bam it was resolved SO quickly in the 2nd ep and SO deliciously at that. It gives me cognitive dissonance with how good it keeps getting over and over with every new 24 mins (/new episode). the supporting characters are also SO good and make it all the more sublime and A++ but again without adding unnecessary tension to create stupid misunderstandings that tend to go unresolved far longer than they have to. many oh so many times, scripts tend to forget/forgo the extent of knowing and understanding characters tend to develop of e/o after spending enough time around them, knowing them. but then yaikan yoho has NEVER once done that and has only made it abundantly clear that BOTH yoh and segasaki KNOW how the other is (segasaki definitely more than yoh but then again that's what gives rise to the miscommunication cause yoh tends to forget/fail to see things while caught up in his own perceived insufficiencies which means it's always murky in his head no matter HOW clear everything is to the audience). after all that's how things happen irl too, you may know your close ones extensively and STILL have miscommunications and misunderstandings in the relationship - whatever be it's nature. and AND-

let's also talk about how puss in boots 2 popped off with the ship this time bc dang, they took such a mid couple and gave them such a glow up! tbh i never really found myself invested in kitty and puss' relationship in the first puss in boots movie. it seemed too attraction-based rather than real love, plus neither of the characters were fleshed out enough for my taste. if i'm going to root for a ship i gotta love both characters individually as well. but the last wish gave both characters that substance and development i wanted, and bc i got attached to them both individually i also fell in love with their relationship. they've got great chemistry and development, and the misunderstandings between them actually make sense, especially at the end when kitty thinks puss abandoned her to take the wish for himself and that he's the same selfish person as he was before. there wasn't any easily avoidable, stupid miscommunication thrown in to add drama like we've seen in too many movies now. their love felt so real in this film and it was the most adorable thing. dreamworks has had a bunch of failures in the past but thankfully they've still given us some banger ships with great chemistry like megamind and roxanne, branch and poppy, and wolf and diane, and now i can add kitty and puss to the catalog.

A/N: I randomly got the urge to write this- I hope people find some enjoyment out of this! Feedback is always appreciated!

"You're an idiot, Choi Beomgyu. I hope you get trapped in here forever."

An annoyed scoff leaves Beomgyu's mouth, his eyes moving away from his phone to shoot you a glare, hating this situation just as much as you.

"If I'm trapped here forever, you're gonna be trapped with me, dumbass. Now shut up while I look at the weather."

You roll your eyes in response, looking outside his bedroom window, watching the heavy snowfall, not a single color in sight, as if the snow washed away the vibrancy of the city. Trees, cars, and houses were covered in a thick blanket of snow, the crystals shining from the street lamps reflecting off of them.

While some may consider your current surroundings an early winter wonderland, you couldn't be more pissed. You were positive the world was playing some sick joke on you the moment your professor paired you with Satan himself, better known as Beomgyu, but now this was a step too far. You knew that with the expected six feet of snow, there was absolutely no way that you'd be going home to your bed tonight.

All you wanted was to curl up in the warmth of your own covers, maybe even treat yourself to a cup of hot chocolate as you binged whatever show you hadn't finished yet, but at least your current rage could warm you up instead.

"Why the fuck did you invite me over if it was gonna snow?"

Beomgyu groans and refreshes his phone for the hundredth time as if the weather app would suddenly tell him something different and all the snow would vanish instantly.

"Don't try and blame this on me. Did you check the weather before you came here? No. It would have made more sense for you to check the weather since you had to leave your place."

You bite back a response, knowing that for once in his life, Beomgyu was right, but you'd never admit that out loud.

There were almost no words in the dictionary that could describe the mutual hatred you had for each other. Your friends never understood why you hated the boy so much, but you had every reason to.

How could you not hate the guy who gave you your very first heartbreak and humiliated you?

While others would know him as the hyperactive lovable idiot on campus, he'd always be the guy who asked you out in high school because the seniors dared him to, gave you your first kiss, and then lied about getting a handjob from you the next day. You were elated when you walked into the school doors, ready to look for the boy you had fallen for, only to be devastated when you heard the rumors being whispered about you.

Nothing between you has been the same since. You knew no one would ever believe you if you denied the rumors, so you did what any "mature" teen would do...you doubled down on the lie and made a few embellishments of your own, claiming that Choi Beomgyu had a small dick.

It was safe to say that the rivalry had started there and hasn't gone away even after starting college. All you wanted was a peaceful college life, away from any childish drama, but when you saw Beomgyu in your Art History class, you were tempted to drop out of the course. And when he became your partner for end of semester project, you were ready to send in your letter of resignation.

"My friends know I'm at your place, and the last thing I want is another incident where people think I slept with you or something," you hiss out as you reposition yourself in Beomgyu's uncomfortable desk chair, causing it to squeak.

Beomgyu glances up from his phone with an indifferent look, biting the side of his cheek and letting out a heavy sigh through his nose.

"If your friends think you slept with me and don't believe you, that's their problem. And can we maybe not talk about that right now? Or ever?"

You narrow your eyes at the nerve of the boy sitting in front of you on his bed. He's the one who ruined your high school reputation, and yet he's the one who wants to forget it ever happened?

"Why not? It seems pretty relevant to our current predicament. If you hadn't lied about getting a handjob, I wouldn't have started hating you, and we could've—" you cut yourself off from finishing your sentence, worried about the words that nearly left your lips.

We could've been together.

Beomgyu chooses to ignore your unfinished sentence, for now, as he tosses his phone aside, giving you his full attention with a scowl on his face.

"You don't even understand what really fucking happened, Y/N. I'm not as shitty as you think I am."

Your gaze challenges his as you tilt your head in amusement.

"What don't I understand, Beomgyu? I'm pretty positive I know everything and can gather up that you're just a massive asshole."

Another long sigh leaves Beomgyu as he debates whether he should fess up to what actually happened, figuring that anything he said was useless anyways. But fuck it, what's the worst that could happen? You continue to despise him?

"I was dared to ask you out, but I already had a crush on you, and Yeonjun dared me to "man up" and tell you. His friends found out after our date ended and asked me how it went...I told them I kissed you, and they started making fun of me for not doing more with you. I know it's stupid, but I panicked and said that you...ya know. I was gonna tell you myself and apologize, but you were already upset and said I had a small dick and avoided me anytime I tried to talk to you."

Beomgyu watched your face closely as your smug expression fell, soon replaced with a look of shock. All these years, you figured Beomgyu had made a master plan to humiliate you to score some cool points, but he was just a scared sophomore pressured by a group of douchebag seniors. Regret instantly floods your body at the realization that Beomgyu wasn't as much of an asshole as you painted him to be.

Yeah, he still lied and caused your humiliation. But you refused to give him the benefit of the doubt and allow him to apologize, opting for your own form of revenge.

"I— Beomgyu, I didn't know—" you scramble out, your mind racing a mile a minute.

Beomgyu breaks eye contact to stare at the pen holder on his desk as if it was the most intriguing item in the room.

"I know you didn't. But it's fine. I'm sorry for lying. Can we please not talk about it anymore?"

"I'm sorry for lying too...and not letting you apologize, and being a bitch to you for all these years." Your words come out mumbled, but Beomgyu manages to hear you regardless.

He clears his throat as he steers his attention to the blizzard outside, the harsh wind blowing snowflakes against his window.

"Um—I'll call you an Uber when the streets get cleared. You can sleep in my room tonight. I'll take the couch," Beomgyu awkwardly states as he gets up from his bed, leaving his room before you can even mutter a response.

You let out a breath you didn't even know you were holding as his absence leaves you to bide in your thoughts.

I'm such a dumbass.

Oh My God. THE WORST! Manufactured drama over things that Would Not Be A Problem if the characters would just get their shit together! Worse if it's only a misunderstanding because one of the characters is holding the idiot ball that episode or takes something out of context and gets their feelings hurt or anything else that makes the misunderstanding feel Really Super Preventable! I hate this! I hate it so much! I get why it's used so much because hello easy drama but it feels Cheap!

it's the worst because it could be solved very easily with a conversation. and it provides no real conflict

Oh my gosh PLEASE JUST TALK IT OUT I CAN'T DEAL WITH THIS!

I get that it’s a thing that happens in real life but it’s so frustrating it watch play out especially when it’s multiple episodes

JUST TALK LIKE A NORMAL PERSON. You have a phd in this show please you know how to just say “oh I was helping her move out” and explain yourself. Why do the characters forget how to talk for the two seconds that the writers need to extend the movie. When it’s a reasonable miscommunication it’s fine but let’s be honest Hallmark killed all good miscommunication plots.

Oversaturated and tired.

My Top 10 BL's of 2022

I am Back with my BL drama top 10, I might’ve been quiet but I have been actively watching BL dramas. Remember this is my opinion and you might not agree with it but I made up my mind and these are my top-tier BL’s of 2022😎❤️‍🔥

10. Cherry Blossoms after winter 7,8/10

This heartwarming BL was something that I needed when I watched it. I wished it was again longer though because it just didn't feel finished yet and was sometimes a bit rushed. Like I would love to see more about them as high schoolers, especially with that bully storyline, and then the College part was also short or the acceptance of his mom, that could've gone better I feel. But other than that I loved the chemistry between our main leads. The tension was there every time, so that was a big plus, and just their whole relationship, it made me feel warm.

09. To My star 2 8/10

We all know what I am going to say...Again way too short, also I was super confused when I started watching. The sudden jump in time and then back. I was so confused and heartbroken as well. Thankfully everything got clear throughout the other episodes but yeah. This BL definitely did not disappoint as sequel and I can't thank them enough for making it because I feel like we finally got real closure and to see them, in the end, being happy together made me feel so warm and for a change, I didn't feel sad when it ended because they were happy and I felt that happiness. These two actors are definitely amazing together.

08. Cutie Pie 8,5/10

I wanted to watch this because of Zee and mainly for Zee but when the first episode aired I was hooked. I love Nunew and his chemistry with Zee but not only them, also the friends were amazing. I fell for Syn & Nuer even though I disliked Nuer at first because he was after Kuea but that changed when his attention went to Syn, and from that moment they had my heart. Of course, we can't forget about Nat and Max who are playing Yi and Khondiao because they were brilliant as well. Now I have to admit that I probably said every single episode that I was in love with Zee, which isn't a lie because this man can act, the way Lian looks at Kuea, I think I drowned every single time. The reason I give this an 8,5 is simply because of miscommunication, also the sudden change from hate to love was like huh? like why you tell him you don't love him but the next day you suddenly do. The purposely hurting your lover just because you want to see who he really is? yeah, it didn't sit well with me but that being said it's still a good BL for sure!!

07. Love Mechanics 8,9/10

The BL that I have been waiting for, for what is it 2 years!! Did I maybe overhype it in my head, yes I did. Now I have to say that I think what they did was brilliant because the NC scene in the first episode wasn't forced anymore, because both were under influence, still not completely okay but it's better than before.. I love Yinwar because their chemistry has always been on point but with this 2-year gap it's nice to see how much they grew and the acting was so much better. Now what I didn't like and this is kind of a pet peeve of mine with BL's is the lack of communication and with this BL that was definitely the case, no one wanted to listen to one and another, which left to heartache which wasn't necessary at all and also the Yeehwa involvement which often led to the misunderstandings, was annoying to me but other than that I loved Yinwar portraying Vee and Mark because together they were brilliant.

06. My Only 12% 9,1/10

When I started watching this, I knew I was set up to cry a lot and that was not a lie the first few episodes, I cried a lot. I really have to give it to Earth & Santa because I was completely invested in their relationship. Earth is really a brilliant actor and knows how to make you cry your eyes out! I think the sudden change in character was brilliantly done. the way the roles were reversed in which Cake was now the one that got treated how he treated Eiw first. I loved that a lot. I think Santa was brilliant in expressing the jealousy he felt as Cake for Eiw and I do think it's good that he actually spoke his mind, even though it hurt Eiw. I love how Cake is there for Eiw even in the most difficult part of life. I just loved it. I just really think this was a seriously good BL.

05. The Eclipse 9.3/10

The Eclipse, another GMMTV BL, which is brilliant. Now I only knew Khaotung as a light-hearted goofy character so I was pleasantly surprised to see him being this badass guy who isn't afraid to stand his ground and then he was paired up with First, who played the brainwashed perfect. This is amazing and I love how they change when they are together. Now I must admit that I am not crazy about their school being this crazy ass cult, I just hate Cults and everything surrounding it, it's creepy to me but other than that this is an amazing BL. I love seeing people fight for what they believe in and their rights, and I am totally on board with it. I also have to praise Neo for his character in this BL, I LOVE seeing him play a serious character, it just suits him so so much better and I love that he is paired up with Louis, they have such great chemistry! I do hope we get more projects with Khaotung and First because they are perfect together.

04. Not Me - 9,5/10

Not me was a surprise to me because I had kind of forgotten about it until I suddenly saw the trailer popping up again. I loved this cast and especially, Offgun & First, Fluke, they really were outstanding. The rest of the cast of course! I love how Off finally played a serious character instead of the goofy player kind of person because he can pull it off so well. I was very impressed with every episode. Gun also was outstanding as Black & White, I love it when he plays characters like this, it really suits him, and also he was playing a twin. Then we have the side couple Fluke and First, they were brilliant, I felt their emotions through every scene and when that scene with Yok in the hospital happened I was a sobbing mess. The reason I gave this a 9.5 is that I already knew who put Black in the hospital and also I felt somewhat disappointed with Grams character, I was so convinced that he was in love with Black but then he suddenly wasn't but other than that this was brilliant and refreshing!

03. Semantic Error 9.7/10

Semantic Error, what a fantastic Korean BL this was. I was hooked from the start and loved the dynamics between the two main leads Park Seoham(Jaeyoung) & Park Jaechan(Sangwoo). I cannot express my love for this drama enough. I was obsessed with it and it's now one of my comfort BL's. I love how Sangwoo's hate changed into Love. It was definitely a battle within himself and the way Jaeyoung stayed patient with him, was just amazing. The reason why it has a 9.5 rating is that for me it was too short but this is always the case with Korean BL's, I do have to admit that I was already happy that the episodes were a bit longer this time around but yeah other than that it was a perfect warm BL.

02. KinnPorsche La Forte - 9,9/10

This Bl was THE BL that I had been waiting for, for over a year if not more and it did NOT disappoint. It took me on a real rollercoaster of emotions. I went in for KinnPorsche and I enjoyed them a lot. I laughed a lot because they might have the worst bodyguards, but who cares. The chemistry between Apo and Mile was amazing and I couldn't help but feel flustered at times....like that scene in the bathroom..but yeah they were amazing. I also fell for KimChay. These two cuties, one that loves too much and one who didn't know how to accept that love, very Taylor swift if you ask me but I loved every second of it and I really hope they will give them their own side story! Now Tankhun..This man was brilliant, I never laughed this hard while watching a BL, I applaud Tong for his brilliant acting! Now the couple that took over this BL and that was VegasPete. The way I fell for them was no joke. I was obsessed and still am. The angst between them and the way they fell for each other and then that scene where Vegas got shot. Everything was perfect. Now you are wondering why 9.9. I think they started too late with VegasPete's story and I want more of KimChay!

01. Love In The Air - 10/10

Love in the Air was THE surprise of this year, at least for me. I didn't know much about this BL until I randomly came across it a few weeks before it would air BUT boy did it leave an impression. BossNoeul & FortPeak did terrific jobs, especially since they are new actors. I have never seen a BL Drama where there was so much love and communication. PayuRain didn't really have a plot but this was not something that I missed because I thought their love story was wholesome. everything was perfect. Their Chemistry was top notch and I just loved everything about them! FortPeak also was amazing. The way Peak portrayed Sky was brilliant; you could feel his pain and how Fort showed how Prapai changed for Sky was amazing. The pain Sky had been through and for Pai to be the one that opened his heart again and even saved him, I have been in awe and pain and in love the entire time while watching this BL, so I think it's fair enough that this BL is at the top of my list for 2022. In my eyes, this was the best one!

Okay I cannot stop thinking about Laerryn’s fucking “The ones from,,Aria?” and Loquacious’ response to it, like I feel like that’s honestly a microcosm of the reason they got divorced. Hear me out.

Well okay that whole interaction was kinda a microcosm of why their relationship fell apart, but I want to focus on that specific line right now. Is it because I absolutely LOVE the delivery? Bitch maybe, but honestly I wanna talk about the delivery. And the context. Loquacious’ line right before that was “Why haven’t you been replying to my messages?” and THEN Laerryn goes “The ones from,,Aria?”. See I was thinking about it, and it sounded more like she was correcting him on whose messages she was ignoring - ESPECIALLY with the little accompanying up-and-down look she gave him.

Loquacious doesn’t catch that. He immediately thinks it’s insecurity on her part, regarding Aria and the pattern in show biz for the star to have an affair with his pretty young assistant/manager/cocktail waitress/etc. So he defends, he assumes, and she doesn’t push. Laerryn Coramar-Seelie, one of the PUSHIEST in this cast of pushy characters, doesn’t push the issue, indicating that Aria being young and pretty isn’t the problem. The real problem here is found in the next exchange: “You have my unadulterated attention right now.” “Well, that would make the first time that’s happened.” “Oh my gOD *summons fire bolt*”. Bit of an escalation there, yeah? Like obviously there was tension, there was frustration, but things were civil enough right up until Loquacious said Laerryn never gave him her full attention.

Loquacious Seelie, you see, is a very attention-grabbing individual. Not just by chance, though being a marbled changeling helps significantly, but by design. He wants you to pay attention to him, he cultivates his entire existence around how he can catch and hold the most positive attention. What makes him think that wouldn’t work on the woman who married him?

The issue here was never about insecurity derived exclusively from Aria. The issue here is that Laerryn, a very focused, single-minded individual, has always had her attention stolen by Loquacious, to the point that her heart followed. Did Loquacious ever reciprocate? Did he even notice? He called them “my messages”, but it was Aria who sent them - and then he has the AUDACITY to whine that she never paid attention to him? What a fucking hypocrite!

Just. They want the same things from each other, they’re saying and requesting the same things, but they’re speaking different languages when they do it. And when they’re not, they’re too busy with their respective careers to accommodate each other. There is so much miscommunication and misunderstanding and hurt laid over and through the genuine care and love they had and STILL FUCKING HAVE for each other and I for one am living for the drama.

Miscommunication. Like, you're supposed to be in love with each other, right? Which means you communicate with each other for fucks sake. I know miscommunication is a big romance trope but it's just so stupid. It causes so much drama and unnecessary anxiety and just...just fucking talk to each other you assholes (I will give a pass to this trope if it's done well...like you think it's a misunderstanding but actually the characters have talked about this and they're faking the misunderstanding/miscommunication. Killer and Healer has some miscommunication but it actually makes sense why there's miscommunication...doesn't mean I have to like it, but it makes sense, so it gets a pass)

Forever and Ever: Script & Visual Storytelling Review 🏮

As usual, during my yearly holiday, I always opt to watch dramas that I already watched (in an attempt not to get addicted 😂) so this time of the year, I chose Forever & Ever during my trip to London & Wales.

Now I'm back, I want to write a review why this drama is very special in my book. For a starter, I'm not really a big fan of romance dramas in general but when it is done right, like this drama for an example, it will be special in my heart and I will rewatch it often as my comfort watch.

WHY IT IS SPECIAL?

I love how this drama portray 'soulmate' kind of relationship between the couple. They have one mind & one soul mentality that are portray beautifully in the drama. So, normal romance troupes such as misunderstandings, miscommunications, petty love games, noble idiocy or breakup are non-existence in this drama. Its all about them working together hand in hand facing the adversities together which is very refreshing to see.

LOVABLE MAIN LEADS

Zhousheng Chen is by miles my most favorite romantic lead in any media. He is shy and awkward and its funny to watch his antics. But he has this big heart that is full of love and kindness. I love his silent love the best -- Shiyi didnt know what he did for her most of the times since it is purposely written to be that way but Shiyi can feel his love in every part of her bones. Whether it is big or small, his love is selfless and did not ask anything in return. And I love how he handle his toxic mother with such a grace -- never disrespecting her but also never allowed her to mistreat his wife as well.

Shiyi probably the most high EQ FLs in Cdramas. She is beautiful and graceful and her understanding and coping mechanism is on another level. Like if there are conflicts, you will notice she will do things to avoid the awkwardness by offering foods or change the subjects or topics. Or any misunderstanding, no need explanation since her trust in her husband will give her answer to that misunderstanding. Or some secrets are no need to be told since it wont change anything. She is one of my most favorite FLs in Cdramaland without a doubt. Plus, she did all the first moves, how awesome is that?

INTIMACY

I love how this drama portray intimacy between the couple. Its fulfilling and natural and wholesome in general. Like one of the scenes, Shiyi will casually tuck her hand under Zhousheng Chen's armpit while hugging him. 🤭 And I think I have ever seen a drama where a couple smile at each other as much as they did to each other. They really sold the feeling of couple who are actually in love and just enjoy being in each other's companies. And what I like best is that we have no idea who actually love more since they both give and take equally in the relationship.

SPECIAL LOVE GESTURES

Love gestures is what I called for all special love behaviors between couples that are not kissing or hugging. These gestures are special to only 2 of them and must happen a lot of times in the drama. While I usually struggle to find this in other romance dramas, Forever & Ever has really a lot of these love gestures. Like a lot, some will be repeated like 6 to 7 times since it is the couple's signature love gestures towards each other.

SLEEPING MONTAGE

I have never seen a drama which show sleeping scenes as much as this drama. 😂 But I love every single one of them. I love how they are shown sleeping separately and ended up in each other arms slowly. Or for comedic effects. All are done tastefully and beautifully.

I LOVE YOU

Yes, they are one of the few couples in Cdramas that actually use I Love You: Wo Ai Ni (我爱你) instead of I Like You: Wo Xihuan Ni (我喜欢你). And we got to see this 4 times in the drama -- all at different occasions and evoke different kind of emotion each time.

BEAUTIFUL VISUAL DIRECTING & CINEMATOGRAPHY

I love how the Director using frames a lot in the drama to display characters' thoughts and distance and how when they are shot in the same frame, its to show how both is at the same state of mind. And I also notice the drama used a lot of earthly colors like yellow, white and brown for soothing and warm effects and that is why you will feel the drama is very relaxing and healing. Or using shadows when the couple had their first night together which is one of the best directing I've seen for this kind of love scenes.

I also love how this drama will be using characters' outfits to tell a story or their motivation. I like how Zhousheng Chen & Shiyi will always wear same color with different shades before their marriage while same color with same shade (coupling outfits) after their marriage. Or how the antagonists in the drama will always wear black, literally, black all the time lol. Or grey character like Weixing will always wear black & white except after she died where she finally appear in flowery and colorful outfit in Meixing's imagination.

If you happen to love Chinese arts in general whether its poetry, painting, calligraphy or music, then this drama is a treat for you. I love the many poems they used in this drama whether to console, to express feelings or to break ice. Or I love how Zhousheng Chen communicate with his mother through painting as well since he is not really good with words. All are done effectively and get the point across and not just done as filler scenes. Since both of them are well verse in this area, it also part of the reasons why they connect to each other as they did in the drama.

Zhousheng Chen imitates Shiyi's similar painting from before to send message to his mother.

Shiyi wrote Shànglín Fù poem on the wall just like Shiyi in One & Only. And she left it unfinish too, for Zhousheng Chen to finish it later.

Zhousheng Chen wrote Shiyi's favorite poem on the wedding lanterns along the corridor aside from the handwritten 3,000 wedding cards that he wrote one by one.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, this drama is great if you love to watch good love story with a lot of details and easter eggs from One & Only. They also did a lot of love message using numbers all throughout the drama like the 1 Yen coin from year 2011 (2011 means 'Love You Shi Yi', and the 1 Yen refers to how she's his one & only) love confession made by Zhousheng Chen to Shiyi or the message on their crocs.

And while watching the drama at London, I totally can imagine Zhousheng Chen will be holding Shiyi's handbag if they ever did their shopping at Notting Hill flea market. 😂

TDLR: The drama is a visual fest aside from the good script it possessed. It is also very healing and wholesome! ❤️

It's deliberately misrepresented slander, but the way Parvis turns Saria's "Fine, I'll let things continue so long as Ifrit's safety is being considered, just don't make this a problem I need to disarm with fists" into "Yeah it's no problem if I turn the child into a bomb when Saria will disarm it with fists" is just, the epitome of how Rhine abuses her trust. Everyone in the company she built disrespects Saria's desire to protect people but banks on her protecting them from the fallout anyway.

Can I just say like 99% of the time drama coming from misunderstandings and miscommunication is SO fucking bad because everything would be cleared up if all the parties just TALKED to each other but the way Parvis manipulates Silence makes it make total sense. i LOVE how scary it is, because it's all done through dialogue that asks you to read between the lines.

Parvis leans on Silence and Saria's imbalanced power dynamic to manipulate her, primarily because it's in Silence's in-game profile that while she may be shy, she's actually willing and able to communicate openly for things dear to her heart. If Saria were to learn everything, Parvis would get his ass punted straight into the horizon, so it was imperative that he break the trust between the two.

That's why Parvis brings up Saria's position and responsibilities at all times, why he says, though never directly, that oh it's incredible that Silence and the Defense Director are getting along so well, but don't you think you're abusing the Director's generosity a little? He pressures Silence's own insecurities, uses the hostility she gets from her fellow lab members to isolate her, make her feel both like the office suck up who gets close to the bosses for special favors, and for being an ungrateful lowly worker who doesn't know her own place.

Once she's nervous and unsure about her safety in her own workplace, then comes breaking her trust in Saria entirely. When Silence gathers enough courage to go behind Parvis' back and realizes that they've been making Ifrit into a human weapon, Parvis first reminds her about her own complicity ("But silence, you were the one who put the originium shard in her"), then attacks Silence's trust in Saria by telling her about Saria's real work of defending Rhine's corporate interests and PR, implying she did some real dirty things to do it. With one lie by omission by telling Silence that Saria chose the safety of Rhine over Ifrit, he was ready for the kill.

He tries to challenge Silence's faith then when he says "Do you really think Director Saria would choose you over Rhine Lab's interests?" which he could only have done after drawing out her insecurities, but still ends up failing when Silence insists that maybe Saria would not choose her, maybe she was nothing to Saria, but the love that Saria showed Ifrit HAD to be real. Saria would fight for Ifrit.

So Parvis changes his approach and attacks that by showing Silence that Saria's signature was on the approval form for the designs of what would be Ifrit's weapon.

That's what finally does it. Silence won't be open with Saria anymore because she can't. in Silence's eyes, Saria was in on it from the start, and that Silence believes only she had Ifrit's welfarein mind all along.

And STILL, out of some lingering hope or wish, she still tries to ask Saria about it when they're alone. But Saria's own wishy-washy answer, trying to toe the line between keeping Kirsten happy and protecting Ifrit, only fed the growing distrust Silence already had for her.

That's what led to Silence taking drastic measures and putting up a plan to temporarily kill Ifrit with a heart-stopping drug, then smuggle her out of Rhine that ended up causing the disaster. Even if she didn't have a single fighter's bone in her body, Silence is both courageous and crazy enough to do something really stupid (which she does AGAIN for Anthony's sake in Mansfield Break)
