excellent article on why KOSA is fucking awful, how it affects teens, lgbtq+ young people, and other underage marginalized groups, and why you should care about how it affects them even if you’re not in the states.

I want yall to know the censoring on tiktok has gotten worse and as sad as it sounds to mention tiktok, tiktok helped spread awareness about Palestine and Congo, Sudan and Yemen, Afghanistan and more. Please engage with accounts that use the tag or talk about it and keep talking, sharing etc.
No matter how small the account is(of course make sure they're not spreading propaganda) but a lot of bigger accounts get banned, or censored. I've noticed Palestinian creators have had their stuff banned or hacked and I'm seeing more people mentioning congo information not being pushed out as more (deliberately by tiktok and I had my own experience with this) and I'd like to remind you all China does own tiktok [edit: I forget some stuff is not widely known so I don't want to confuse ppl but I meant China owns like a good chunk of tiktok it has a lot of investors etc. I dont want yall to confuse that with the CEO of tiktok. I would not be surprised if thats why China has a lot of influence on the app] And China does own a lot of the mines in Congo.

Conservatism and Anti-ism are Two Sides of the Same Coin in Censorship
The internet at large really needs to stop using pedophilia and grooming as their shutdown response to any censorship argument. You're not protecting the children. You're having a moral panic and/or trying to win an argument.
It's the classic response from every conservative and anti- whenever the topic of censorship comes up.
Conservatives want to stop schools from teaching their kids about queer topics and sexual education.
Anti folks want the internet to stop tolerating/being indifferent certain kinks.
Both these groups essentially just want to feel personally comfortable about how the world is conducting themselves according to their personal moral compass. Conservatives think gay is morally wrong. Antis think a group of kinks are morally wrong.
"People kissing is fine unless they're gay. They need to stop doing that."
"People engaging in kink is fine unless it squicks me out. They need to stop doing that."
And then when you just throw down the trump card PEDOPHILIA, all argument is lost. Because that's how it starts, right? It's an easy tactic to shut down discussing underlying issues, such as, the invasion of privacy and the removal of marginalized media.
There's even a whole wikipedia page on this very popular tactic called "Think of the Children."
This post was largely inspired by a tweet I saw talking about how "The 'Guns Don't Kill People' people sure seem to think a book can make you gay."
But it applies to all arguments of censorship because you know what?
They sure do think that.

Was watching a video reaction of Dan Schneider's apology. I watched it twice and it was just odd. Anyway, this reaction video came from Alexa Niklos of Zoey 101 fame.
Back up. This is about Quiet On Set, the dark Nickelodeon documentary. Opened my eyes and had me literally weeping. It wasn't good, these were PENT UP tears.
Anyway, Alexa's reaction video. I won't go into details or my opinions about the whole thing, I just want to rant a bit about her self censoring.
Alexa kept spelling things out and using secret words. I actually had to look them up, and now I'm probably on some list. It was hard to watch bc I was confused. I didn't get the insightful information I was expecting from someone else who worked with Schneider, I just got mad.
This was on YouTube! I watched someone else who self censors herself and it's annoying as shit! Swear all you want, talk about the most horrific murders and crimes. But can't say sex or abuse or those other words.
I'm an increasingly grumpy panda who wants to understand, but I can't because I have to research the research, and wave through the self edits. By the end of Alexa's reaction video I was more upset having sat through it instead of the actual situation her and other children went through under "the Golden age" of Nickelodeon.

PSA: Please for the love of all that is hockey stop censoring the names of teams and players!
No, I'm not being sarcastic. I keep seeing this a lot on a ton of hockey blogs. (for example "d*nn", "p*tr*ck k*ne", "bl*es" or "v*g*s g*ld*n kn*ghts"), and honestly, it's really, really, bugging me, especially as someone who has some team lb tags filtered. I know most of you mean well, but this might not be the best idea. Even if you don't like saying their name. Even if you're censoring it as a joke. Even if you're worried about people you don't like flocking your blog (which, there's a block button for that btw). For one, Tumblr allows you to filter out certain words and tags. And people may already have specific players/filters tagged. If a post contains said filtered word/tag, it'll look like this:
Tumblr media
(Image ID: A screenshot of a tumblr post that is flagged to the viewer due to it containing "#bruins lb". The username and profile picture is covered in red. The person has an option to view the post, via a button that reads simply "View post". End ID). By censoring them, Tumblr won't pick it up, and people will still see the post they don't want to see. Additionally, censoring words, especially l*ke th*s (like this) might not be helpful to visually impaired folks, especially those who use screenreaders.
"So, what should I do instead?" If you're talking about something a player did, here's some tag suggestions I have: If you're talking about a player who has assault or abuse accusations against them, you can use "tw assault", "tw abuse", "tw sa" (if the accusation involves sa), "tw violence" or "violence mention" (if violence is involved), or similar tags! If you're talking about someone who has a history of bigotry, try tagging "racism", "ableism", "homophobia", "tw slur" (if there's a slur involved), or other similar tags! I do see people use "tw (team/player)" as well (ex. "tw hawks", "tw auston matthews", "cw wilson" or "cw boston bruins") as well, however, I also discourage against that, because not every hockeyblr user has those filtered, and from my understanding they also aren't that well known. Again, simply tagging the players' names or the name of the team is enough half the time. (And, as a bonus, if you already have "tw (player/team)" tagged, instead of removing them, you can also simply add the player or team name to the tags!) If you're simply trash talking a player or a team... just say the name. It's not that hard, really. However, you can also tag the post with "trash talk" if you don't want people seeing it. Other good tags/words to use include: "rant" or "vent", which can be especially helpful to folks who dont wanna see huge rants, vents or complaints. "tw injury", which you can use to filter out videos or discussions containing injuries. "tw blood" and similar tags can also be helpful if blood is involved. "hockey fight", which can be used for hockey fights. Can be especially helpful since some fights get bloody and do lead to injury. Simply tagging "fight" can also work! "swearing cw", can be helpful for folks who don't want to see posts with heavy amounts of cursing. I advise only using this if there's excessive swearing involved, and not if there's only one instance of a curse word. "slander", which you can use if you're ranting about a player you don't like. And additionally.. "I don't know how filters work!" or "I don't know how to filter words/tags!" Alright so here's what you do: 1. Go to your user settings. 2. Scroll to "content you see". 3. Add the tag or word you want to filter, like this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Image IDs: Two screenshots of Tumblr settings. In the "Add a filter" bar are the words "tony deangelo" and "keith". End ID) 4. Click "Add" and bam! You're done! You might need to refresh for it to go into affect. Protip: Filtering out words will filter out all words of a specific phrase/name. For example, if you filter out "Tom Wilson", it will filter out all posts containing both words, even if it doesn't talk about the player. I advise using "Filtered Tags" when filtering out specific players, teams and team lbs.

I've noticed recently that there are quite a few people on here that don't know how to filter our tags and content for things you don't want to see.
So here's a quickly little guide for you! Pictures included for my visual learners! THIS POST CONTAINS PHOTOS FOR MOBILE ONLY HOWEVER ITS THE SAME PROCESS ON DESKTOP!
First you want to go to your settings. You can find the icon in the top corner of your profile.
Tumblr media
You're then going to go to Account Settings
Tumblr media
Click on Content You See
Tumblr media
Now to filter tags or content you're going to tap on the blue plus sign. You're going to add the filters one by one.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
DO NOT CENSOR YOUR TAGS!!
You need to type the actual word and the abbreviation. Not only does this go for filtering your posts, but it also goes for your actual posts.
IF YOUR POST CONTAINS DARK MATERIAL DO NOT CENSOR YOUR TAGS OR WORDS OTHERWISE THE TUMBLR SYSTEM WILL NOT FILTER THEM OUT!!
The best thing you can do for yourself if you find someone who censors their tags/content of things you do not want to see is to block them. Block people whose content you do not want to see.
If I missed anything, please reblog this with whatever I missed. Stay safe out there yall!!

The parent company of the neighborhood magazine I write for is very frustrating. They keep censoring words in my articles. They have an AI that simply scans for words they've flagged and doesn't look at the context at all. A lot of the men and women we feature are military and law enforcement, so words like "guns, drugs, sexual" and others always get flag and I have to go argue with them about the words being left in. I had a client use the phrase, "War is Hell" that the parent company demanded I remove. I had a sheriff write me an article about free speech based on the Bill of Rights and the whole thing got flagged as inappropriate. I can't talk about going to the shooting range, gun shows, or anything like that. It is above and beyond annoying. They're supposed to be local, neighborhood magazines and they won't let me give local flavor, like guns. Sigh.
