I was unaware that Diego Rivera had done a set of massive fantastical-industrial murals for the Detroit Institute of Arts -- he was commissioned to do only a few panels but apparently wanted to do the entire courtyard, so one of the Fords (as in Henry) ponied up the cash for it. It’s absolutely fucking epic and spectacular; if you like the above you really should check them all out.
These are just two of my favorite panels; one shows the manufacture of chemical weapons (note bomb in background -- this was done in 1933 prior to the atomic bomb, so very prescient). The other is what I started thinking of as the Nativity of the Vaccine -- it’s a scene of scientists vaccinating a young child, but it’s deliberately designed to invoke images of the adoration of the Madonna and child. As the docent explained, the Madonna is also based on Jean Harlow, which caused a scandal when it was unveiled, “A Mexican Communist putting a sexpot film star into the role of the Virgin.” Absolutely compelling, richly-layered, beautifully wrought work.
[ID: Two panels from the courtyard murals; one shows a number of men in WWI-style gas masks, doing various industrial tasks including checking the pressure on a vat, while a large bomb hangs ominously in the background. The other shows a young child, draped in a towel, being held by a woman in a white dress while a man on the other side vaccinates the child in his arm. Three “wise men” scientists are at work in the background, and several farm animals used to develop vaccines are shown in the foreground.]

So today Biden announced that the United States has finalised the destruction of its chemical weapon stocks:
Tumblr media
I'm just using that to launch into a more interesting fun fact that Australia is still working on destroying its chemical weapon stockpiles, despite never manufacturing them. During WW2 we received stocks from the US and Britain of mustard gas, phosgene, lewisite, adamsite and CN gas.
Following WW2, most of these were destroyed, unfortunately just by burning them or dumping them in the ocean, which is... not ideal. There's been a number of environmental issues because of this.
In subsequent decades, we repeatedly discovered new stockpiles of chemical weapons, typically literally just in sheds where they'd been forgotten about. As late as 2009, 267 250-lb buried chemical bombs were extracted from Marrangaroo Army Base. These are gradually being safely disposed of.
Geoff Plunkett is a historian that has written extensively on this topic if anyone wants to read more.

long shot maybe but does anyone have recommendations for books about chemical weapons or specifically chemical warfare in the 1980s-1990s (iran-iraq war, gulf war era, etc)? or a history that covers up through today is fine too. it can be biological warfare and biotoxins etc as well as chemical

Chemistry behind nerve agent, Sarin
Tumblr media
Sarin, a nerve agent discovered in 1938 by German researchers as a byproduct of pesticide development, was named after the first letter of the four researchers' surnames.
Post-World War II, it gained global production. Codenamed GB by the U.S. military and P-35 by the Soviet Union, Sarin belongs to the G-class nerve agents and is about 26 times more toxic than cyanide. It has the highest volatility among nerve agents, entering the body through skin, eyes, inhalation, or ingestion.
By inhibiting acetylcholinesterase, it disrupts the nervous system, causing muscle paralysis and asphyxiation. Sarin's slow degradation in the body leads to cumulative toxicity. Immediate treatment with antimuscarinic atropine, oxime, and artificial respiration is crucial for survival. Beyond the battlefield, Sarin has been involved in numerous terror incidents.

A second Nakba has begun
“While Israel insists that the evacuation order is for the protection of ordinary Gazans, the IDF’s bombardment of Gaza City continues. Palestinian civilians have been told to head south towards Rafah, the border crossing with Egypt which has also been repeatedly hit by Israeli airstrikes. At the time of writing, there has been no indication that Israel will assent to a ceasefire to allow the evacuation to take place. The reality is that people are being told to flee their homes without any promise of safety to do so.
“The IDF have said that civilians who leave Gaza City will be allowed to return “only when another announcement permitting it is made.” Many Gazans are descended from the 700,000 Palestinians displaced during the Nakba, the forced expulsions that accompanied the establishment of the state of Israel. Those individuals and families were never allowed to return to their homes. The prospect of indefinite displacement, with no guaranteed right of return to their homes, carries ugly echoes of 1948.
“Over the past week – to say nothing of the decades of illegal military occupation, and de facto apartheid – the Israeli state has made it clear that it has little regard for the constraints of international law. They have imposed collective punishment on over 2 million Gazans, cutting off water, aid, food and power. They have bombed densely populated civilian areas. And, according to Human Rights Watch, the IDF have used artillery-fired white phosphorus in both Gaza and Lebanon. The use of white phosphorus near civilians is prohibited under the UN Convention on Conventional Weapons, to which Israel is not a signatory.
“During this week’s media appearances, both the Conservative government and the Labour leadership effectively signed a blank cheque for Israel’s military to do whatever it deems necessary, whatever the human cost, in the wake of the Hamas attacks … What should we call the forced movement of civilian populations, urged on by the threat of unspeakable violence, if not ethnic cleansing? Israeli officials have been explicit in their dehumanisation of Palestinians. When announcing the ‘complete siege’ on Gaza on Monday, Israel’s defense minister Yoav Gallant stated baldly that ‘we are fighting human animals and we act accordingly’. Ariel Kallner, a member of the Knesset and part of Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party, called on Twitter for ‘a Nakba that will overshadow the Nakba of 48’. But though many in British politics, and political media, have turned a blind eye to anti-Palestinian racism in light of the recent atrocities perpetrated by Hamas, Gallant’s genocidal language is merely the latest in an escalation of dangerous rhetoric.
“Over 6,000 bombs have been dropped on the tiny Gaza Strip. Over 1,500 people in Gaza have been killed, including hundreds of children. Dozens of Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank, including two men shot dead by Israeli settlers while attending the funeral of four Palestinians killed on Wednesday by settlers and Israeli soldiers. And with over a million of Gazans being ordered to flee south, but with nowhere safe to go, it is likely that worse is yet to come. The West has given its full complicity to Israeli war crimes.”

Prognosis
The IDF has been delaying their ground invasion of Gaza, as they are preparing stockpiled chemical weapons, a mix of locally produced and Uncle Sam’s generous donations, while their soldiers are being inoculated against specific nerve agents.
The most likely scenario is that the IDF, with the assistance of Uncle Sam’s special forces, “flushes” out the Gaza tunnels with nerve agents, chemical weapons. Repurposed pesticides. Palestinians hiding from Israeli bombing will be referred to by the IDF as roaches, and the resulting deaths of all the remaining Israeli hostages in the tunnels will be blamed of Hamas.
Depending on whether the nerve agents used require skin contact or inhalation will determine whether IDF soldiers sweeping the tunnels after the “flush” will meet resistance. This will be a dystopian sci-fi scenario complete with gas mask wearing weapon carrying marauders and a rag-tag defense by locals also wearing gas masks.
Since the use of chemical weapons on civilians or soldiers is a war crime, except if the victims are the aggressor's own citizens, Israel will take advantage of that technicality, that loophole in international law, and posthumously recognize Palestinians as Israeli citizens after decades of denying them basic human rights while they were alive.
The twist of fate is that succeeding generations will likely show a spike in birth defects from genetic damage by both nerve agent exposure and the antidotes given to soldiers.

"When my partner first told me the Oppenheimer movie didn't talk about this AT ALL, I immediately lost whatever little interest I had. Gross to make so much money off of them, yet not even mention the victims. 35 infants died the month after the test bomb alone.
Idk, call me a buzzkill or whatever but I don't think there's enough special effects in the world to make me feel less gross about this. I really thought part of the movie would be him facing the reality of what he created tbh."

🇷🇺 🚨 RUSSIAN FEDERATION LOSES BID FOR SEAT ON THE BOARD OF THE ORGANIZATION FOR THE PROHIBITION OF CHEMICAL WEAPONS (OPCW)
The Russian Federation lost in its bid to earn a seat on the Executive Council board of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).
A vote for the bid failed on Wednesday, with Lithuania being given the seat instead.
98 states supported the changes, 8 opposed, and another 21 abstained.
During his speech at the OPCW conference, Deputy Head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation Kirill Lysogorsky noted that the nomination of Lithuania, which has virtually no chemical industry, to the OPCW Executive Council by participating countries does not carry any practical meaning, which calls into question the constructive work of the organization.
Lysogorsky said that this was probably done to reduce Russia’s role in the work of the entire OPCW or to “squeeze” it out of the executive council.
