Bonfire Night is coming up (and I'm surprised I actually remember, because even though I've been here over 20 years I have consistently failed to remember that it's a thing, so every November I get caught out and think, 'who the hell is shooting fireworks in November? Why wou- ohhhhhhhh ofc'.) On the way home it occurred to me that the Gunpowder Plot wasn't miles away from Jan 6: more destructive, and arguably with more intent; certainly more secretive. But it's odd to think of a future where Jan 6 could be celebrated as a national holiday, not as some kind of early triumph of freedom (actually fascism), but because it was a seditious or treasonous plot that failed.
